Education Secretary Linda McMahon told Harvard University in a letter on Monday that it would no longer be eligible for new federal grants, saying that it has systematically violated federal law.
McMahon&#8217;s letter to Harvard President Alan Garber comes after the Trump administration has frozen more than $2 billion in federal dollars to the university over DEI and its handling of anti-Israel protests. President Donald Trump last week said that Harvard would lose its tax-exempt status.
&#8220;Harvard University has made a mockery of this country&#8217;s higher education system. It has invited foreign students, who engage in violent behavior and show contempt for the United States of America, to its campus,&#8221; McMahon wrote. &#8220;In every way, Harvard has failed to abide by its legal obligations, its ethical and fiduciary duties, its transparency responsibilities, and any semblance of academic rigor.&#8221;

&#8220;Harvard University, despite amassing a largely tax-free $53.2 billion endowment (larger than the GDP of 100 countries), receives billions of dollars of taxpayer largess each year. Receiving such taxpayer funds is a privilege, not a right. Yet instead of using these funds to advance the education of its students. Harvard is engaging in a systemic pattern of violating federal law,&#8221; she added. 
She called for Harvard to institute &#8220;common sense&#8221; reforms, including merit-based hiring, ending programs that promote &#8220;crude identity stereotypes,&#8221; disciplinary reform, cooperation with law enforcement, and reporting compliance with directives from the Trump administration.
McMahon said the letter served as notice that Harvard should no longer apply for federal grants because &#8220;none would be provided.&#8221;
&#8220;Harvard will cease to be a publicly funded institution, and can instead operate as a privately-funded institution, drawing on its colossal endowment, and raising money from a large base of wealthy alumni. You have an approximately $53 billion head start, much of which was made possible by the fact that you are living within the walls of, and benefiting from, the prosperity secured by the United States of America and its free-market system you teach your students to despise,&#8221; she wrote. 
McMahon said that the primary issue the administration had with the university was its response to the Supreme Court&#8217;s decision to strike down affirmative action.
&#8220;Perhaps most alarmingly, Harvard has failed to abide by the United States Supreme Court&#8217;s ruling demanding that it end its racial preferencing, and continues to engage in ugly racism in its undergraduate and graduate schools, and even within the Harvard Law Review itself,&#8221; she said. Our universities should be bastions of merit that reward and celebrate excellence and achievement. They should not be incubators of discrimination that encourage resentment and instill grievance and racism into our wonderful young Americans.&#8221;
Trump has been sharply critical of Harvard, calling it a &#8220;threat to democracy&#8221; and &#8220;far left institution.&#8221;

On Thursday, President Donald Trump took a step conservatives had been hoping for through many presidencies, issuing an executive order to end the taxpayer subsidization of National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).
The directive instructs the Corporation for Public Broadcasting&#8217;s board of directors to &#8220;cease federal funding&#8221; to both outlets.
In mid-April, the White House released a <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/articles/2025/04/the-npr-pbs-grift-has-ripped-us-off-for-too-long/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> delineating its grievances with the two nonprofit public broadcasting organizations, suggesting eliminating taxpayer funding for them.
“For years, American taxpayers have been on the hook for subsidizing National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), which spread radical, woke propaganda disguised as ‘news,’” the report stated.

What does matter is that neither entity presents a fair, accurate, or unbiased portrayal of current events to taxpaying citizens. I therefore instruct the CPB Board of Directors (CPB Board) and all executive departments and agencies (agencies) to cease Federal funding for NPR and PBS.”
In 2021, Katherine Maher, who had just left her position as CEO and executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation and later became the CEO of NPR, said at a <a href="https://www.ted.com/talks/katherine_maher_what_wikipedia_teaches_us_about_balancing_truth_and_beliefs/transcript" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TED talk</a>, “Seeking the truth and seeking to convince others of the truth might not be the right place to start. In April 2024, former NPR Editor Uri Berliner published an <a href="https://www.thefp.com/p/npr-editor-how-npr-lost-americas-trust">essay</a> in which he admitted, “An open-minded spirit no longer exists within NPR, and now, predictably, we don’t have an audience that reflects America. &#8230; At NPR, we hitched our wagon to Trump’s most visible antagonist, Representative Adam Schiff.” He continued:

With the election only weeks away, NPR turned a blind eye.

Berliner wrote of former NPR CEO John Lansing’s attitude in the wake of the death of George Floyd: “In confessional language he said the leaders of public media, ‘starting with me—must be aware of how we ourselves have benefited from white privilege in our careers. We must understand the unconscious bias we bring to our work and interactions.’ &#8230; He declared that diversity—on our staff and in our audience—was the overriding mission, the ‘North Star’ of the organization. &#8230; Race and identity became paramount in nearly every aspect of the workplace.”
He concluded, “What’s notable is the extent to which people at every level of NPR have comfortably coalesced around the progressive worldview. And this, I believe, is the most damaging development at NPR: the absence of viewpoint diversity.”

The Department of Education sent letters on Thursday to state education commissioners, warning them to end unlawful diversity, equity, and inclusion programs at K-12 schools or face loss of federal funding. 
The letters, sent to all state commissioners overseeing state education agencies, told the officials that they must certify within 10 days their compliance with federal anti-discrimination laws and the Supreme Court&#8217;s decision to strike down affirmative action. If schools retain programs with identity-based stipulations, their federal funding could be slashed, the education department warned.   
“Federal financial assistance is a privilege, not a right. When state education commissioners accept federal funds, they agree to abide by federal antidiscrimination requirements,” Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor <a href="https://www.ed.gov/about/news/press-release/ed-requires-k-12-school-districts-certify-compliance-title-vi-and-students-v-harvard-condition-of-receiving-federal-financial-assistance">said</a>. “Unfortunately, we have seen too many schools flout or outright violate these obligations, including by using DEI programs to discriminate against one group of Americans to favor another based on identity characteristics in clear violation of Title VI.”
Title VI of the Civil Rights Act stipulates that federal funding cannot go toward programs or entities that discriminate against a person based on their race.
Trainor said the letters were meant to ensure that states comply with the majority decision in Students for Fair Admission v. Harvard, which ruled that affirmative action admission programs at universities were unconstitutional because they violated equal protection under the law.  
“No student should be denied opportunities or treated differently because of his or her race,” Trainor said. “We hope all State and Local Education Agencies agree and certify their compliance with this legal and constitutional principle.” 
The letter gives state commissioners until April 13 to sign a <a href="https://www.ed.gov/media/document/reminder-of-legal-obligations-undertaken-exchange-receiving-federal-financial-assistance-and-request-certification-under-title-vi-and-sffa-v-harvard-april-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">certification</a> signifying that they reached out to all local education agencies in their states and agreed to comply with Title VI and the Supreme Court affirmative action decision. The certification document specifically mentions DEI programs as being problematic.
The certification said that DEI programs were unlawful and impermissible if they were designed &#8220;to advantage one’s race over another.&#8221; If these programs were continued, federal funding could be cut off, school governing boards could face legal action from the Justice Department and potential legal fines.
President Donald Trump’s Department of Education has aggressively sought to crack down on DEI, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/education-dept-slashes-600-million-in-grants-promoting-divisive-ideologies" target="_blank" rel="noopener">slashing</a> $600 million in grants that funded training teachers in concepts such as Critical Race Theory, DEI, social justice activism, and “anti-racism.”
The department also <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-admin-launches-end-dei-portal-for-reporting-schools-discriminatory-practices" target="_blank" rel="noopener">launched</a> a portal for parents and teachers around the country to submit complaints of alleged racial or sexual discrimination happening at their schools. Officials will use these submissions to identify locations for possible investigations. 
At the same time, Trump has been pushing to send more educational responsibilities back to the states and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-signs-order-dismantling-department-of-education" target="_blank" rel="noopener">signed</a> an executive order last month directing Education Secretary Linda McMahon to “take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure” of the department.

‘A Privilege, Not A Right’: Trump Admin Gives K-12 Schools Ultimatum On DEI

Planned Parenthood shouldn’t receive one cent of Americans’ taxpayer dollars. That’s the central truth at the heart of a landmark case the U.S. Supreme Court will hear on April 2, <a href="https://adflegal.org/case/medina-v-planned-parenthood-south-atlantic/?utm_source=dailywire&amp;utm_medium=oped" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic</a>. The incredibly flawed and corrupt abortion industry is a sham of women’s true health care.
I know. I used to work in an abortion facility.
Before my eyes were opened to the truth of life in the womb and the unspeakable harms abortion inflicts on both child and mother, I was a medical assistant at an abortion facility in Illinois. The doctors would perform between 40-60 abortions a day, six days a week. We had between five to eight minutes to get a woman on the table for her procedure and then move her quickly to the next room so doctors could perform the next abortion.
It was a fast-moving train of patient to patient to patient. If you didn’t have the girl ready when the doctor came in, you were slowing him down. He’d write you up, and that would go into your employment file. It was very important to move quickly so the doctors could perform as many abortions as possible, up to 10 additional each day.
One former Planned Parenthood nurse recently remarked on the fast pace of abortion facilities. She shared her own experience in a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/15/us/planned-parenthood-clinics.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Times article</a>: “Employees sometimes administered expired pain medication or the wrong medications as they scrambled to move people in and out.” She added, “It was not uncommon for patients to be taken to the wrong room and prepped for the wrong procedure.”
All of that is deeply disturbing, but unfortunately, it doesn’t surprise me. The focus of the industry that loudly touts “women’s health care” is on one thing: Money. And abortion is big money. In fact, it is the most significant driving factor in the abortion industry.
Between 2018 and 2023, Planned Parenthood (the largest abortion provider in the U.S.) <a href="https://www.plannedparenthood.org/uploads/filer_public/ce/f6/cef6efdb-919a-4211-bb5c-ce0d61fda7f5/2024-ppfa-annualreport-c3-digital.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">received</a> $3.2 billion in direct public funding. Each year, it receives hundreds of millions more from private donors. Since 2022, it has experienced a fundraising boom, amassing over $2.5 billion in net assets.
But its supporters are being deceived into believing big abortion equals comprehensive care for women. Planned Parenthood takes donors’ money and spends it on political activism, not people, and certainly not women’s health care.
The aforementioned New York Times article reported that, over the last five years, “the national office has distributed more than $899 million to affiliates to help them deliver care, but none of it went directly to medical services.” Much of the money went instead to pro-abortion politicking, legal costs, and marketing.
Between 2022 and 2023, women’s preventative-care visits <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/more-abortions-more-taxpayer-dollars-and-fewer-health-services/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fell by 31%</a>, and the number of patients seen annually <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/15/us/planned-parenthood-clinics.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has fallen 60% since the 1990s</a>. <a href="https://lozierinstitute.org/fact-sheet-planned-parenthoods-2022-23-annual-report/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cancer screening and prevention services</a> have dropped by 71% since 2010, including declines of 72% for breast exams and 74% for pap tests.
Americans should never be forced to fund any activist organization, much less one with such an abysmal and deceptive track record, especially when the <a href="https://www.kofc.org/en/news-room/polls/americans-support-legal-limits-on-abortion.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">majority of Americans</a> reject taxpayer funding for abortion.
The state of South Carolina agreed. It rightly determined that Planned Parenthood doesn’t qualify as a health care provider that should receive Medicaid dollars. In response, Planned Parenthood sued the state, and now the nation’s highest court is weighing this <a href="https://adflegal.org/campaign/medina/?utm_source=dailywire&amp;utm_medium=oped" target="_blank" rel="noopener">critical case</a>.
States should be free to direct their funding to providers offering genuine, comprehensive health care by excluding organizations like Planned Parenthood—whose primary business is abortion—from public funding. There are roughly 200 publicly funded health care clinics in South Carolina that provide a broad range of high-quality services, including family-planning services. Consider also the numerous pregnancy centers offering valuable, free services to women in need.
It’s been my great honor to have seen firsthand these service-oriented organizations at work in their communities.
For nearly four decades, I’ve worked at Mosaic Health, a pregnancy center with two locations in Illinois. We’ve served more than 25,000 clients by offering no-cost pregnancy testing and ultrasounds, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, post-abortion counseling, adoption referrals, parenting classes, and a wide array of practical resources for new parents, from diapers to clothes to bottles.
Yet the state of Illinois works diligently to force us to close our doors. Current state law specifically targets pregnancy centers like Mosaic because of our fundamentally held belief that abortion offers no benefits, especially to the unborn baby. Because the U.S. Supreme Court <a href="https://adflegal.org/press-release/us-supreme-court-govt-cant-force-americans-express-messages-they-disagree/?utm_source=dailywire&amp;utm_medium=oped">held</a> that forcing people to promote abortion is unconstitutional, we’ve partnered with Alliance Defending Freedom and other Illinois pregnancy centers to <a href="https://adflegal.org/case/national-institute-family-and-life-advocates-v-treto/?utm_source=dailywire&amp;utm_medium=oped">challenge</a> this unconstitutional law. I, along with many others across our state, pray the district court will see the law’s injustice and uphold our freedom as a pregnancy center to operate according to our deeply held beliefs.
But I’m also looking to the U.S. Supreme Court as they weigh the Medina case, hoping they will agree with the ADF attorneys representing South Carolina and find that states should be free to spend their funds on true, comprehensive, life-affirming health care for women and children.

Congressional leaders unveiled on Tuesday another stopgap bill to avert a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/government-shutdown" target="_blank" rel="noopener">government shutdown</a> at the end of the week, just days before the Christmas holiday.
The <a href="https://docs.house.gov/billsthisweek/20241216/CR.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">continuing resolution</a> (CR) seeks to provide funds to various departments through March 14, 2025, and more than <a href="https://x.com/cami_mondeaux/status/1869167167071236572" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$100 billion in disaster aid</a>, according to early reports.
Included in its 1,547 pages were many other provisions, such as a <a href="https://x.com/stephen_neukam/status/1869167335640383565" target="_blank" rel="noopener">one-year farm bill extension</a>, <a href="https://x.com/liz_elkind/status/1869167609880658126" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pharmacy benefit management reform</a>, and <a href="https://x.com/connorobrienNH/status/1869169003907957133" target="_blank" rel="noopener">money for submarines</a>.
The measure also has sections to <a href="https://x.com/RepJamesComer/status/1869171923822985492" target="_blank" rel="noopener">transfer</a> jurisdiction of RFK stadium to D.C. and funds to <a href="https://x.com/bresreports/status/1869180846101447119" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rebuild</a> Maryland&#8217;s Francis Scott Key Bridge, which was wrecked by a ship collision.
Earlier, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said the CR was intended to be &#8220;simple,&#8221; but it also was &#8220;important&#8221; to address hurricane disasters and help struggling farmers.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) later <a href="https://x.com/SenSchumer/status/1869211269322227870" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> he was &#8220;pleased&#8221; with the CR being &#8220;free of cuts and poison pills, while also securing Democratic priorities.&#8221;
He touted &#8220;millions for child care,&#8221; &#8220;workforce training and job placement,&#8221; proposals to help the U.S. &#8220;out-compete&#8221; the Chinese Communist Party, and more.
Another <a href="https://docs.house.gov/billsthisweek/20241216/Disaster%20Offset%20and%20Government%20Efficiency%20Act.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bill</a> that was released on Tuesday, one called the &#8220;Disaster Offset and Government Efficiency Act&#8221; or &#8220;DOGE Act,&#8221; aims to rein in some spending.
Congress has until midnight on Friday to pass funding legislation to avoid a shutdown. If a 72-hour rule to review the CR is followed, it will come down to the final hours.
With the process involving negotiations between a GOP-controlled House and Democrat-led Senate, some members ultimately did not approve of the final result.
Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) <a href="https://x.com/SenRickScott/status/1869183974180094224" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bemoaned</a> the CR&#8217;s length, &#8220;billions in reckless and unpaid spending,&#8221; and having &#8220;no time&#8221; to review all of the provisions it contains.
He added that this was &#8220;another reason&#8221; why President-elect Donald Trump and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is needed to &#8220;to help us stop this crap.&#8221;

In a <a href="https://x.com/freedomcaucus/status/1869190715651043622" target="_blank" rel="noopener">post</a> to X, the conservative House Freedom Caucus shared demands for moving what it called a &#8220;Cramnibus&#8221; forward with a rule that &#8220;ensures&#8221; a few things.
The group called for &#8220;a full 72 hours to read&#8221; the continuing resolution, as well as a vote on the DOGE Act &#8220;to cut non-defense spending 13% to pre-COVID 2019 levels.&#8221;
Also listed was an amendment to &#8220;stop&#8221; President Joe Biden&#8217;s &#8220;ongoing fire sale of border wall construction materials,&#8221; a blitz <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/exclusive-biden-races-to-sell-off-border-wall-parts-before-trump-takes-office" target="_blank" rel="noopener">first reported</a> by The Daily Wire.
Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/crazy-trump-says-bidens-border-wall-sale-must-be-stopped" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a post to Truth Social on Friday that the Biden administration&#8217;s efforts to sell of border wall construction materials was &#8220;CRAZY&#8221; and &#8220;must be stopped.&#8221;
He further explained: &#8220;It will cost the U.S. a fortune, and time, to get the exact same wall to replace what has been sold, and the new wall will cost triple the price.&#8221;

Vice President Kamala Harris&#8217; campaign boasted a nearly $222 million haul in September, more than three times the money raised by former President Donald Trump&#8217;s campaign last month.
FEC filings posted on Sunday night showed Harris&#8217; campaign raising $221.8 million in September to the Trump campaign&#8217;s $63 million, The Hill <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4944454-harris-raises-more-than-220-million-in-september-outraising-trump-3-to-1/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The Harris campaign, combined with the Democratic National Committee and the state parties, raised nearly $360 million in September. The Republican National Committee and other Republican-affiliated groups combined with the Trump campaign raised $160 million over the same period, according to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/kamala-harris-third-quarter-fundraising-september-donald-trump-f8a21ae87b7a1c7127e8a3b6420dac7d" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Associated Press</a>.
A large percentage of Harris&#8217; September haul — about $82 million — came from glitzy fundraisers her campaign held with celebrities and politicians in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City. The fundraising numbers for the Harris campaign set a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/21/us/elections/harris-trump-campaign-finance.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">new record</a> for the biggest fundraising quarter, as it received $1 billion in the three-month period that ended on September 30. Some of that money, however, was part of President Joe Biden&#8217;s war chest before Harris became the de facto nominee in July and <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/07/21/kamala-harris-biden-campaign-funds-00170136" target="_blank" rel="noopener">inherited</a> tens of millions of dollars from the Biden campaign.
The Harris campaign spent more than it took in last month, pouring $270 million into advertisements on TV, radio, billboards, and the internet, the AP reported. In September, the Trump campaign spent around $53 million on media, according to The New York Times.
Harris and the groups supporting her said they entered October with $348 million on hand, while Trump and his supporting groups entered the new month with $283 million.

While the Trump campaign lags far behind Harris and the Democrats&#8217; fundraising, the Republican nominee is benefitting from a campaign push by Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and his pro-Trump America PAC. The billionaire appeared with Trump in the former president&#8217;s return to Butler, Pennsylvania, earlier this month and has held his own town hall events in support of Trump and Republicans.
Musk&#8217;s America PAC is offering $47 a day to anyone who refers a registered swing state voter to <a href="https://petition.theamericapac.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sign a petition</a> supporting the First and Second Amendments, and the billionaire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/elon-musk-hands-man-1-million-check-at-town-hall-says-it-will-happen-every-day-until-election" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> during a town hall in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on Saturday that he will give away $1 million &#8220;randomly to people who have signed the petition every day from now until the election.&#8221;

Pennsylvania GOP legislators <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry/gop-lawmakers-sink-aid-to-penn-as-statehouses-watch-universities-handle-israel-hamas-war/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">blocked</a> millions of dollars in funding for the University of Pennsylvania’s veterinary school in the wake of the university’s tepid response to anti-Semitism on its campus.
The vote in the Pennsylvania House was taken four days after Penn President Liz Magill — harshly criticized for her testimony at a congressional hearing where she said calling for the genocide of Jews would not violate the school&#8217;s code of conduct on bullying and harassment unless &#8220;the speech turns into conduct” — resigned.
“Until more is done at the university in terms of rooting out, calling out and making an official stance on antisemitism being against the values of the university, I cannot in good conscience support this funding,” GOP House Minority Leader Bryan Cutler stated in opposing the $33.5 million in funding for the University of Pennsylvania’s veterinary school.
Magill’s resignation was not enough for the university to pursue if it wanted to confront anti-Semitism, Cutler, who was formerly the speaker of the House when it was controlled by the GOP, added.
Cutler, a religious Baptist, <a href="https://www.repcutler.com/about" target="_blank" rel="noopener">took care</a> of his younger sister and parents when he was a high school student and both his parents were diagnosed with ALS, which later took their lives.
Every Democrat voted for the funding — which represents 18% of the budget for the veterinary school — while 76 out of the 101 Republicans in the House opposed it, leaving the funding short of gaining the required two-thirds majority.
Even before Magill’s remarks, major donors pulled their funding from the university over its stance in the Israel-Hamas war. Within a week after the October 7 Hamas massacre of 1,200 Israelis, Apollo Management CEO Marc Rowan, a Penn graduate who donated $50 million to the business school in 2018, <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/10/11/apollo-ceo-marc-rowan-demands-upenn-leaders-resign-over-failure-to-condemn-hamas-terror/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">demanded</a> Magill and Scott Bok, chair of the board of trustees, resign. “I call on all UPenn alumni and supporters who believe we are heading in the wrong direction to ‘Close their Checkbooks&#8217;” until the two resigned, he wrote.
Days later, former Republican presidential candidate, Utah Governor, and U.S. Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman Jr. told the University of Pennsylvania that the Huntsman Foundation — which has donated tens of millions of dollars to the university for decades — would <a href="https://www.thedp.com/article/2023/10/penn-jon-huntsman-jr-wharton-halts-donations-magill" target="_blank" rel="noopener">halt its funding</a> because of the university’s silence in the face of the evil perpetrated by Hamas.

Huntsman, a 1987 Penn graduate, served on the University&#8217;s Board of Trustees from 1996 to 2001. His father, Jon Huntsman Sr., graduated from Penn in 1959, donated $10 million to fund the Huntsman Program in International Studies and Business, and donated $40 million in 1998.
&#8220;Moral relativism has fueled the university’s race to the bottom and sadly now has reached a point where remaining impartial is no longer an option,&#8221; Huntsman Jr. said in an email to Penn President Liz Magill.
“The University’s silence in the face of reprehensible and historic Hamas evil against the people of Israel (when the only response should be outright condemnation) is a new low,” Huntsman wrote. “Silence is antisemitism, and antisemitism is hate, the very thing higher ed was built to obviate. Consequently, Huntsman Foundation will close its checkbook on all future giving to Penn — something that has been a source of enormous pride for now three generations of graduates. that his family will stop donating to Penn, stripping the University of a longtime donor amid backlash from influential trustees and alumni. My siblings join me in this rebuke.”

Nearly half of the $20 million raised by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis since he launched his 2024 White House campaign in May has come from voting precincts that supported President Biden in 2020, according to a new analysis.
That revelation was one of several in a new <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/former-trump-donors-are-opening-wallets-for-desantis-gop-rivals-ab756102?st=sfrt4u6k6pbxtdq&amp;mod=e2twp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wall Street Journal analysis</a> that also showed a significant number of Trump&#8217;s 2020 donors are backing other candidates this time, with DeSantis the main beneficiary. The Journal posited that DeSantis&#8217; success in wooing Trump defectors supports his argument that he is the only candidate who can <a class="css-1h1us5y-StyledLink el06won0" href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/another-biden-trump-presidential-race-in-2024-looks-more-likely-19d88039?mod=article_inline" rel="" data-type="link">beat Biden next fall</a>.
Earlier this month, CNN <a href="https://transcripts.cnn.com/show/cnc/date/2023-07-04/segment/08">interviewed</a> a group of &#8220;lifelong Democrat&#8221; mothers from across the country who are supporters of DeSantis because of the policies that he advocated for during the COVID pandemic.
Attorney Julie Hamill said that the group of moms, who met on social media, refer to the governor in a playful way as &#8220;Daddy DeSantis.&#8221;
&#8220;I have never voted for a Republican presidential candidate,&#8221; Hamill said. &#8220;I have always considered myself very socially liberal. But as we became more vocal on Twitter, we were really demonized.&#8221;
Jennifer Sey, the former Brand President of Levis, said that the women gravitated toward DeSantis because &#8220;he was very vocal&#8221; about &#8220;the need to open schools&#8221; during the pandemic.
DeSantis is taking a different tack in his approach to fundraising from the ricks and gimmicks that are a staple of political fundraising in both political parties, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/11/us/politics/desantis-donations-trump.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The New York Times</a>. His campaign has pledged to avoid spammy and irritating fundraising tactics, such as desperate pleas and fake deadlines and setting the default for online donations as recurring monthly when the donor only believes that they are making a one-time donation, according to a separate <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/03/us/politics/trump-donations.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/03/us/politics/trump-donations.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1689379345099000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2CbgCBA2wTcd6qbEGKDn5I">report</a> from The Times. Those who gave to Trump&#8217;s 2020 campaign had to “wade through a fine-print disclaimer and manually uncheck a box to opt out.”
The DeSantis team is betting that a more measured approach will lead to long-term gains and help Republicans cut into the money advantage held by Democrats.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) sent me an email the other day titled &#8220;A handwritten note for you.&#8221;
Of course, as I just said, it was an email. But instead of just text, the email included a JPEG of a note AOC had apparently written — more like scrawled.
The first paragraph of the email said: &#8220;J., Alexandria wrote a quick note to share what our movement has been able to accomplish because of grassroots support from people like you. Read the note below and then click here to contribute.&#8221;
Ah, click here to contribute. A money grab. But the &#8220;J.&#8221; part meant the note&#8217;s for me — maybe only to me.
The first line of the handwritten note, which includes grammatical errors and some nearly indecipherable words, took me a while to figure out, but then I realized the weird — and kinda&#8217; juvenile cursive writing — said &#8220;To our supporters and friends —&#8221;
The note continued:
<blockquote>I wanted to take a moment to thank you for being part of this movement — a people&#8217;s movement. The collective power of your support and continued commitment to action has transformed countless lives on both a personal and systematic level.
Just this year alone, your support has allowed us to:
<ul>
<li>Raise thousands in for trans + LGBT+ advocacy, emergency relief efforts in East Palestine, Ohio, support for migrants and more.</li>
<li>Bring hundreds of hours and counting of free virtual tutoring to under-resourced families with an [sic] Homework Helpers program.</li>

&#8230; All this when it&#8217;s not even an election year, and it&#8217;s still early in the year! There&#8217;s even more to come. As we push to hold special interest to account, fight for real action to combat the climate emergency, and organize for change that actually centers working people, you [sic] continued support means absolutely everything.
If possible, could you help us in that fight with a contribution?
I am so proud of all this movement has and continues to accomplish thanks to you. On behalf of my team, community and our movement: Thank you.</blockquote>
Of course, it was just a craven plea for money. Click the tab and you get to a spot where you can contribute $5, $10, $15, and, for some reason, $27. You can throw in more — $250 or a custom amount — and even make the donations recur monthly.
There&#8217;s nothing odd in sending out fundraising letters. I get them endlessly. But why make it seem like you&#8217;re sending me a personal &#8220;handwritten&#8221; note? And why even call it handwritten when it&#8217;s an email? AOC is the queen of Instagram, so what&#8217;s with the cursive note?
And if you&#8217;re going to write a note, shouldn&#8217;t you get the grammar right? And if part of it&#8217;s illegible, shouldn&#8217;t you write it again?
Finally, the signature is the weirdest.

The Social Security retirement trust fund is <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/gop-rep-elect-lawler-congress-needs-a-come-to-jesus-moment-on-spending" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rapidly approaching insolvency</a>. Congress needs to act at some point, and Americans need to adjust their plans.
Social Security is one of the financial foundations of retirement for most Americans, and it becomes more important as they age.
The benefits are guaranteed for life, no matter how long the beneficiary lives. They’re also the only inflation-adjusted guaranteed lifetime benefit most U.S. retirees have.
The coming insolvency of Social Security has been well-known for years, and the reasons for it are clear.
The Baby Boomers are in or entering their retirement years. Since 2011, 10,000 Baby Boomers per day have been turning age 65.
Beginning in 2024, when the large middle-section of the Boomer generation begins turning 65, that number jumps to 12,000 per day. There aren’t enough younger workers joining the workforce to replace the Boomers and pay taxes into the program.
Each year, the Board of Trustees of Social Security issues a report on the solvency of the program, estimating results for the next 75 years.
The 2022 report had some good news. The retirement trust fund was projected to last through 2034, one year longer than in the 2021 report.
But the assumptions about inflation and demographics seem optimistic. If that’s the case, the trust fund will run out of money before 2034.
The consequences of the trust fund’s depletion are widely misunderstood. The Social Security retirement program won’t end when the trust fund runs out of money. Payroll taxes and self-employment taxes continue to flow into the program each year.
The trustees estimate the annual tax revenue will be enough to pay 75% to 80% of benefits for at least 75 years. That means the worst-case scenario, if Congress doesn’t act to shore up the program, will be an across-the-board reduction in benefits of 20% to 25%.
Congress is likely to act before that happens. Current and future retirees also need to act. But retirees and pre-retirees need to avoid taking some actions being recommended.
Some people advise that, because of the pending insolvency, the Baby Boomers should claim their retirement benefits as soon as they are eligible to, at age 62, or at least no later than their full retirement age.
The reasoning is that they should grab the promised benefits as soon as possible, before any cuts are made.
But it’s generally better for people to wait as long as they can (but no later than age 70) to claim their benefits. The annual benefit increases by up to 8% for each year claiming is delayed through 70. That’s a guaranteed, tax-free annual increase, a return most people can’t obtain anywhere else.
Plus, each year Social Security benefits are increased by the amount of the latest for inflation rate. Over the years, there’s a significant benefit to having that inflation indexing compounded on a higher beginning benefit.
Also, once Congress finally acts, I expect it will do as it has done in the past. People already receiving Social Security benefits and probably those within five to 10 years of claiming them will be protected. The current promised benefit levels will be grandfathered for them.
Even if Congress doesn’t grandfather this group, I’d rather have a benefit cut imposed on the higher benefit gained from waiting to claim than the lower benefit paid to those who claim early.
Higher income and net worth individuals might not be protected. I suspect they’re likely to be subject to some combination of lower benefits and higher income taxes regardless of age.
The most likely scenario is that younger workers (those ages 50 and under) will bear most of the burdens of higher taxes during their working years and lower benefits after their careers. The longer Congress waits to act, the more severe these changes will be.
There’s another option for Congress. It can declare that any shortfall in Social Security will be covered by a contribution of general funds from the Treasury Department. The Social Security shortfall would add to the annual budget deficit and to the federal debt.
Whatever Congress does or doesn’t do, Social Security’s fiscal difficulties aren’t a good reason to change your Social Security claiming strategy if you’re within 10 years of retirement. Most people should wait to claim their benefits as long as possible in order to maximize lifetime benefits. This advice might change when Congress debates specific proposals. You should also build flexibility in your retirement plan.
Because Congress mismanaged the program and didn’t act quickly enough when the shortfall became apparent, your plan should be able to absorb a reduction of 20% to 25% in Social Security benefits beginning in the early 2030s. I don’t expect that to happen, but the prudent action is to have some flexibility in your spending in case it does.

A handful of Democrats and Republicans bucked their respective parties in the House vote Friday to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-sends-monster-1-7-trillion-spending-bill-to-joe-bidens-desk-with-backing-from-9-republicans" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pass the $1.7 trillion “omnibus” bill</a> stuffed with <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pork-parks-and-woke-all-the-fun-features-in-1-7-trillion-omnibus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">all sorts of pork</a> according to critics.
<a href="https://clerk.house.gov/Votes/2022549" target="_blank" rel="noopener">These defectors</a> collectively did little to change the results. By a 225-201 vote, the massive spending legislation cleared the lower chamber and now heads to President Joe Biden, who <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2022/12/23/statement-from-president-joe-biden-on-passage-of-the-bipartisan-year-end-omnibus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">says he will sign it into law</a>. The 4,155-page bill, which features $858 billion in defense funding, as well as $772.5 billion for non-defense “discretionary programs,” already passed the Senate on Thursday.
On the Democratic Party side, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) was the sole &#8220;no&#8221; vote, though a fellow member of &#8220;The Squad,&#8221; Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), also stood out, voting &#8220;present&#8221; — <a href="https://twitter.com/mattloff/status/1606365690146959360" target="_blank" rel="noopener">by proxy</a>.
In a statement, Ocasio-Cortez cited <a href="https://www.govexec.com/management/2022/12/here-are-major-takeaways-17-trillion-omnibus-spending-bill/381162/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spending for the Homeland Security Department</a> and its Immigration and Customs Enforcement sub-agency as well as the omnibus&#8217; significant commitment to national security as her reasons for opposing the legislation.
&#8220;I campaigned on a promise to my constituents: to oppose additional expansion for ICE and DHS — particularly in the absence of long-overdue immigration reform,&#8221; the leftist firebrand said. &#8220;For that reason, as well as the dramatic increase in defense spending with exceeds even President Biden&#8217;s request, I voted no on today&#8217;s omnibus bill.&#8221;

Although she opposed the overall bill, Ocasio-Cortez defended certain &#8220;victories&#8221; achieved during negotiations, including &#8220;significant funding&#8221; for more than a dozen community projects in her district that includes the Bronx and Queens.
Her statement was met with some chiding in light of the congresswoman responding Thursday to a Twitter thread from the office of Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) that highlighted $3,000,000 for “clean energy workforce development” at the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority as a &#8220;pet project&#8221; of Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY).

Nine Republicans broke ranks with the rest of their party on Friday, voting with the vast majority of Democrats to pass the spending bill.
These defectors were Reps. Liz Cheney (R-WY), Rodney Davis (R-IL), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA), Chris Jacobs (R-NY), John Katko (R-NY), Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), Fred Upton (R-MI), and Steve Womack (R-AR).
In addition, Four Republicans declined to vote. They were Reps. Ken Buck (R-CO), Mike Gallagher (R-WI), Trey Hollingsworth (R-IN), and David McKinley (R-WV).

AOC Breaks Ranks In $1.7 Trillion Omnibus Vote

Seeing the backlash across the United States against woke city district attorneys, including the ouster of ultra-Left San Francisco DA Chesa Boudin in July, billionaire George Soros, indifferent to Americans’ concerns, vowed to continue supporting them with his vast fortune.
The Capital Research Center <a href="https://capitalresearch.org/article/living-room-pundits-guide-to-soros-district-attorneys/">reported</a> in January that since 2016, their researchers tracked over $29 million in funding from Soros “through a personal network of political action committees (PACs) formed specifically to back left-wing DA candidates.”
“I have supported the election (and more recently the re-election) of prosecutors who support reform. I have done it transparently, and I have no intention of stopping,” Soros acknowledged in his <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/why-i-support-reform-prosecutors-law-enforces-jail-prison-crime-rate-justice-police-funding-11659277441">opinion piece</a> in The Wall Street Journal.
Soros wrote “Our system is rife with injustices that make us all less safe. The idea that we need to choose between justice and safety is false.”
“Some politicians and pundits have tried to blame recent spikes in crime on the policies of reform-minded prosecutors. The research I’ve seen says otherwise,” Soros insisted.
Yet here are some statistics compiled by <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/06/08/other-woke-das-who-could-ousted-like-san-franciscos-chesa-boudin/">The New York Post</a> of some of the most famous leftist DAs — all Democrats— and the rise in crime in their jurisdictions:

The denial of how leftist policies have led to a rise in crime is not restricted to Soros; when Gascón, who faces a potential recall and <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/08/01/george-soros-vows-to-keep-backing-woke-das-despite-urban-crime-spikes/?utm_source=NYPTwitter&amp;utm_medium=SocialFlow&amp;utm_campaign=SocialFlow">received</a> nearly $3 million in campaign funds from Soros, was <a href="https://ktla.com/news/local-news/l-a-county-da-gascon-responds-to-soft-on-crime-criticism/">asked</a> by news anchors to critics calling him a “soft-on-crime” DA while his city has been blitzed by an <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/six-cities-pace-pass-violent-crime-2022">8.6% rise</a> in violent crime over the past year, he <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/george-gascon-claims-l-a-county-is-safer-in-some-areas-because-of-his-policies-despite-rise-in-violent-crime-over-past-year/">answered</a> that he believed Los Angeles was safer under his tenure, claiming, “Yeah, in some areas it is. &#8230; I know how to keep communities safe.”
