WASHINGTON — The United States is terminating trade discussions with Canada for the time being, President Donald Trump announced on Friday, citing the country&#8217;s digital services tax on American tech companies.
The president made the announcement in a Truth Social post following a Friday afternoon press briefing at the White House.
&#8220;We have just been informed that Canada, a very difficult Country to TRADE with, including the fact that they have charged our Farmers as much as 400% Tariffs, for years, on Dairy Products, has just announced that they are putting a Digital Services Tax on our American Technology Companies, which is a direct and blatant attack on our Country,&#8221; Trump shared.
&#8220;They are obviously copying the European Union, which has done the same thing, and is currently under discussion with us, also,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately.&#8221;

The president&#8217;s announcement comes after the United States put levies on Canadian goods after he took office this year, a move which prompted Canada to put tariffs on American exports. Canada is the largest importer of American exports, while the United States is Canada&#8217;s biggest trading partner.
Prime Minister Carney&#8217;s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Daily Wire.

In April, President Trump imposed global reciprocal tariffs on the United States’ trading partners, invoking his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977, to address the national <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2025/04/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-declares-national-emergency-to-increase-our-competitive-edge-protect-our-sovereignty-and-strengthen-our-national-and-economic-security/">emergency</a> posed by the large and persistent trade deficit” driven by the lack of reciprocity in the country’s trade relationship.
President Trump also wanted to see jobs and factories come “<a href="https://www.business-standard.com/world-news/trump-wants-us-to-make-things-again-but-is-it-ready-for-the-challenge-125060400675_1.html">roaring back</a>” to the United States.
The idea that the United States can become a manufacturing powerhouse is an attractive one, to politicians on both sides of the aisle. After all, who would not be in favor of economic revitalization, new jobs, improved security, and economic independence? However, America’s ability to establish manufacturing dominance faces insurmountable challenges… unless we are smart about the industries we “bring home.”
Historically, the United States has never been a true manufacturing superpower.
Manufacturing employment in the United States peaked in 1979, with nearly 20 million workers employed in the “manufacturing sector.” Over the next four decades, manufacturing entered a structural decline, and the United States transitioned to a service-oriented economy. By 2020, “the <a href="https://www.blackrock.com/us/financial-professionals/insights/exploring-us-manufacturing#:~:text=In%201979%2C%20U.S.%20employment%20in,a%20more%20service%2Doriented%20economy.">service</a> sector dominated the economy,” accounting for 79% of the nation&#8217;s Gross Domestic Product, up from 52% in 1950, and represented 80% of the nation’s total employment. In 2025, fewer than 13 million <a href="https://nam.org/mfgdata/facts-about-manufacturing-expanded/">workers</a> were in the manufacturing sector.
The challenges for the United States to become a manufacturing superpower are many and complex.
First, the country simply does not have the labor pool to do so. The <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/06/04/adp-jobs-report-may-2025-.html">unemployment</a> rate in May 2025, the latest data available, was approximately 4.2%, near full employment.
The labor <a href="https://www.dol.gov/agencies/wb/data/widget">participation</a> rate is running at 62.6%, which is well below the 67+ percent <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/191734/us-civilian-labor-force-participation-rate-since-1990/">rate</a> seen in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but not low enough to indicate there is a bench of workers waiting to enter the job market and join the manufacturing sector.
In addition, our labor force is one of the highest-paid in the world. In the United States, the average hourly <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t24.htm">wage</a> of a “nonsupervisory manufacturing employee” is approximately $28.80. In 2020, that wage was approximately $6.50 per hour in <a href="https://www.china-briefing.com/news/reshoring-from-china-to-mexico-how-prevalent-is-it-really/#:~:text=The%20hourly%20wage%20for%20manufacturing,over%2012%20percent%20from%202019.">China</a> and $4.82 in Mexico. In <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/744071/manufacturing-labor-costs-per-hour-china-vietnam-mexico/#:~:text=A%20difference%20in%20earnings,and%20Vietnam%20for%20cheaper%20labor.&amp;text=Log%20in%20or%20register%20to%20access%20precise%20data.">Vietnam</a>, the average hourly wage in manufacturing is $3.10.
We simply do not have the workers to compete with less developed nations, and those we do have make too much money to make America competitive with them.
The only answer would be to open our borders and import foreign workers to fill manufacturing openings at suppressed wages. This is something that President Trump rightly opposes, as it would change the make-up of the United States, to the detriment of our national identity.
So, what are we to do?
The United States can reshore its manufacturing, but must do so on a limited, prioritized basis. We should not care where our tennis shoes, blue jeans, or T-shirts are manufactured. Those industries hold no vital interest to the United States.
However, we should prioritize the reshoring of industries such as pharmaceuticals, computer chips, drones, and food additives.
“Approximately 40% of finished pharmaceutical products and 80% of active drug ingredients sold in the U.S. are manufactured overseas, <a href="https://www.gao.gov/products/gao-20-262t">according to a report by the GAO</a>. This includes a significant portion of generic drugs, with roughly 80% being produced overseas.”
China controls 80% of the <a href="https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/in-depth-research-reports/issue-brief/a-global-strategy-to-secure-uas-supply-chains/">drone</a> market in the United States.
83% of <a href="https://www.csis.org/analysis/strategy-united-states-regain-its-position-semiconductor-manufacturing#:~:text=And%20as%20to%20semiconductors%2C%2083,capacity%20is%20now%208%20percent.">semiconductors</a> are manufactured outside of the United States.
As a free market capitalist, I do not like the government picking “winning industries,” but there is a national security aspect to consider, and President Trump is doing this.
The <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/pulling-billions-from-harvard-fund-trade-schools-heres-what-people-saying-about-trumps-latest-move">president</a> recently floated the idea of taking the $2.2 billion in frozen assets from Harvard University and using that money to fund trade schools, where people could learn to support the manufacturing that is in the nation’s vital and national interests.
At the end of the day, the United States will never become a manufacturing superpower. Our cost structure and standard of living are simply too high… and that is a good problem to have.
However, we must focus on reshoring those industries that are vital to our national defense and our national interests. With the right focus and incentives, we can quickly achieve this strategic goal and free ourselves from our competitors’ supply chain whims.

After two days of talks in Switzerland, President Donald Trump&#8217;s envoys touted what they said was significant movement toward reaching a trade deal with China.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters on Sunday that there was <a href="https://x.com/business/status/1921615311838577125" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;substantial progress&#8221;</a> and a &#8220;great deal of productivity&#8221; in the discussions with Chinese officials.
&#8220;We will be giving details tomorrow, but I can tell you that the talks were productive,&#8221; Bessent added.

The delegation from China also indicated the negotiations went well.
Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng said the talks marked &#8220;an important first step&#8221; and promised a joint statement, according to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-05-11/us-china-made-substantial-progress-in-trade-talks-bessent-says" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bloomberg</a>.
As it stands, the United States imposed an overall tariff rate on Chinese goods at 145%. Beijing responded by <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/11/china-strikes-back-with-125percent-tariffs-on-us-goods-starting-april-12.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">raising</a> tariffs on U.S. goods to 125%.
China&#8217;s delegation <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/china-dispatches-top-security-chief-to-face-trump-team-over-fentanyl-crisis-tariffs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> included President Xi Jinping&#8217;s top security official, a sign the discussions broached the fentanyl crisis in addition to trade.
The world&#8217;s two largest economies have been roiled as a result of the trade war, which escalated with Trump&#8217;s &#8220;Liberation Day&#8221; tariffs last month.
Bessent noted that he and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer spoke to Trump the night before.
&#8220;He is fully informed of what is going on,&#8221; Bessent said of the president.
Trump himself posted about the talks on Truth Social in the evening on Saturday.
&#8220;A very good meeting today with China, in Switzerland. Many things discussed, much agreed to. A total reset negotiated in a friendly, but constructive, manner,&#8221; Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114486066663976973" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.
&#8220;We want to see, for the good of both China and the U.S., an opening up of China to American business. GREAT PROGRESS MADE!!!&#8221; the president added.
Greer, who was standing beside Bessent, said China&#8217;s officials &#8220;worked very diligently&#8221; and were &#8220;very tough negotiators.&#8221;

He echoed what Bessent said, declaring how the past two days were &#8220;very constructive,&#8221; and then made a stark observation about the timeframe.
&#8220;It&#8217;s important to understand how quickly we were able to come to agreement, which reflects that perhaps the differences were not so large as maybe thought,&#8221; Greer said.
&#8220;That being said, there was a lot of groundwork that went into these two days,&#8221; he continued.
Greer also emphasized that it was &#8220;important&#8221; to remember why they were there in the first place.
&#8220;The United States has a massive $1.2 trillion trade deficit, so the president declared a national emergency and imposed tariffs,&#8221; Greer said.
&#8220;We&#8217;re confident that the deal we struck with our Chinese partners will help us work toward resolving that national emergency,&#8221; he added.
Heading into the high-stakes talks, Trump suggested that Bessent had room to offer a lower rate.
“80% Tariff on China seems right! Up to Scott B,” Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114477628854583525" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a Truth Social post on Friday.
Trump officials have been <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/sorry-china-bessent-says-deal-with-massive-trade-partner-very-close" target="_blank" rel="noopener">negotiating</a> on trade with a host of nations impacted by the president&#8217;s &#8220;Liberation Day&#8221; tariffs, which hinge on a national emergency declaration.

President Donald Trump, joined by representatives from the United Kingdom in the Oval Office, announced on Thursday that the two countries will cut back on trade barriers in the first major trade deal for the president.
The agreement will allow the United States to gain increased market access in the United Kingdom — the sixth-largest economy in the world — for billions of dollars worth of American exports, according to Trump. U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who spoke to the president over the phone, told Trump he is &#8220;really pleased&#8221; with the deal between the two allies. The final details are still being worked out, but Trump will keep some tariffs in place on British imports. The president emphasized that the deal would boost both countries&#8217; industrial bases and help protect steel.
&#8220;Both countries have agreed that economic security is national security and will be working together as allies to ensure that we have a strong industrial base and appropriate export controls and protections for key technologies and industries like steel,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;Steel was a big factor. Both countries will become stronger with steel.&#8221;
Shortly after announcing the deal, President Trump posted a chart on social media, showing that Britain&#8217;s tariffs on U.S. goods will drop to 1.8% while &#8220;reciprocal tariffs&#8221; on the United Kingdom will remain at 10%. Trump said other nations should not view the 10% tariff on Britain as a template for how the administration will negotiate future deals.

Asked by Daily Wire White House Reporter Mary Margaret Olohan if the trade deal includes any assurances from Britain to protect free speech and freedom of religion, Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the agreement is solely focused on the economy.
Lutnick added that the deal will also allow the United Kingdom to export up to 100,000 vehicles to the United States for a 10% tariff. Lutnick said the agreement will enable the U.K. to maintain access to the U.S. market while also protecting American jobs. The United States will be able to gain more access to U.K. markets to sell agricultural products such as “ethanol, beef, [and] machinery,&#8221; according to Lutnick. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said the deal will &#8220;exponentially increase our beef exports&#8221; to the United Kingdom.
The United Kingdom will also be allowed to export Rolls-Royce engines and airplane parts to the United States tariff-free, and Britain will purchase $10 billion worth of Boeing airplanes from the United States, Lutnick added.
Starmer praised Trump and his trade team for working out the trade deal.
&#8220;Really important deal,&#8221; Starmer said. &#8220;This is going to boost trade between and across our countries. It&#8217;s not only going to protect jobs, but create jobs, opening market access.&#8221;
The deal is a significant step for the Trump administration as it seeks to negotiate new trade agreements with dozens of countries worldwide following the president&#8217;s &#8220;Liberation Day&#8221; tariffs rollout last month.

‘Both Countries Will Become Stronger’: Trump’s Trade Deal Will Give U.S. More Access To U.K. Economy

Vice President JD Vance declared in a Tuesday interview that Europe must stop being America&#8217;s &#8220;permanent security vassal&#8221; while slamming continental leaders for repeatedly ignoring voters on immigration.
&#8220;Europe&#8217;s entire security infrastructure, for my entire life, has been subsidized by the United States of America,&#8221; Vance <a href="https://unherd.com/2025/04/jd-vance-my-message-to-europe/">argued</a> in an interview with British website UnHerd.
The vice president specifically noted that with the possible exception of Britain, France, and Poland, &#8220;most European nations don&#8217;t have militaries that can provide for their reasonable defense.&#8221; He emphasized that European leaders have &#8220;radically underinvested in security, and that has to change.&#8221;
&#8220;It’s not good for Europe to be the permanent security vassal of the United States,&#8221; Vance said.
Vance&#8217;s comments <a href="https://www.politico.eu/article/jd-vance-europe-permanent-security-vassal-united-states/">align</a> with the Trump administration&#8217;s frequent criticism of European nations for relying too heavily on U.S. military power, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warning that American presence in Europe is not &#8220;forever,&#8221; per Politico.
President Trump has been pushing NATO countries to spend 5% of their GDP on defense, which represents a significant increase from the alliance&#8217;s current 2% target, with the potential increase set to be discussed at the upcoming summit in The Hague.
In 2022, only 7 of the 30 NATO members <a href="https://www.nato.int/nato_static_fl2014/assets/pdf/2024/6/pdf/240617-def-exp-2024-en.pdf">met</a> the minimum 2% GDP threshold for defense expenditures, a number which shot up to 23 in 2024 after Russia invaded Ukraine.
Vance also expressed frustration with many European leaders who continue to implement migration policies that in his view were completely contrary to what their citizens voted for.
&#8220;We&#8217;re very frustrated — &#8216;we&#8217; meaning me, the President, certainly the entire Trump administration — that European populations keep on crying out for more sensible economic and migration policies, and the leaders of Europe keep on going through these elections, and keep on offering the European peoples the opposite of what they seem to have voted for,&#8221; Vance said.
Despite his criticism of European foreign and domestic policies, Vance emphasized his admiration for the continent, stating, &#8220;I love European people. I&#8217;ve said repeatedly that you can&#8217;t separate American culture from European culture. We&#8217;re very much a product of philosophies, theologies, and of course the migration patterns that came out of Europe that launched the United States of America.&#8221;
However, in Vance’s view, Europe being an ally of the United States doesn’t afford it special treatment, particularly in trade.
“With the United Kingdom, we have a much more reciprocal relationship than we have with, say, Germany … While we love the Germans, they are heavily dependent on exporting to the United States but are pretty tough on a lot of American businesses that would like to export into Germany.”
The administration’s guiding principle for the continent going forward is quite simple: “fairness.”
“I think it will lead to a lot of positive trade relationships with Europe. And again, we very much see Europe as our ally. We just want it to be an alliance where Europeans are a little more independent, and our security and trade relationships are gonna reflect that.”
Vance also responded to criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who accused him of &#8220;somehow justifying&#8221; Russia&#8217;s invasion, saying it is &#8220;sort of absurd for Zelensky to tell the [American] government, which is currently keeping his entire government and war effort together, that we are somehow on the side of the Russians.&#8221;
The vice president concluded the interview with a straightforward summary of the administration&#8217;s foreign policy philosophy: &#8220;We&#8217;re not on anybody&#8217;s side; we&#8217;re on America&#8217;s side.&#8221;

Trump officials leading trade negotiations with countries around the world were bullish on the upcoming talks while updating President Donald Trump and his cabinet on Thursday afternoon.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer addressed the trade talks during the meeting as the administration says it is preparing to negotiate with more than 75 countries following Trump&#8217;s &#8220;90-day pause&#8221; on tariffs. While President Trump <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/10/china-trump-tariffs-live-updates.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">acknowledged</a> during the cabinet meeting that his aggressive tariff policy would result in &#8220;a transition cost and transition problems,&#8221; he added, &#8220;We think we’re in very good shape.&#8221;
Trump&#8217;s trade team agreed with his assessment, and Lutnick said he expects &#8220;historic deals&#8221; to be reached &#8220;one after the other.&#8221;

Trump is expected to sit down with his trade advisors on Thursday and be presented with &#8220;a list of what [they] think his priorities might look like&#8221; for negotiating deals, Hassett said. The NEC director added that Trump will likely &#8220;have his own ideas about where to move things&#8221; on the list.
In an interview on CNBC, Hassett said that Trump &#8220;recognizes that in order to get the big change that we need for America&#8217;s workers &#8230; we need to create enough pressure on our trading partners that things that American presidents have been asking for, for the last decades, are actually offered at the table.&#8221; The NEC director claimed that the timing of Trump&#8217;s decision to issue a &#8220;90-day pause&#8221; was mainly based on the number of countries coming forward to make deals and didn&#8217;t have much to do with the stock market&#8217;s negative response to the tariffs.

A White House official confirmed to The Daily Wire that every country, aside from China, hit by U.S. tariffs will now see a baseline 10% tariff. Canada and Mexico will not be affected by the 10% baseline tariff, but the 25% tariff Trump previously imposed on certain products from both nations will remain.
The European Union, which voted earlier on Wednesday to retaliate with tariffs on U.S. goods, was also granted a tariff reprieve since its retaliatory tariffs had not gone into effect yet, according to the White House official.

As Trump seeks to force China&#8217;s hand, the White House is preparing for trade talks with multiple countries, including two of its closest allies in Asia, Japan and South Korea. Trump said Tuesday morning that South Korea is sending its &#8220;top team&#8221; to the United States to discuss a deal while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will lead talks with Japanese leaders.

In 2024, U.S. imports from Israel stood at $22.2 billion, while exports were estimated at $14.8 billion, according to the U.S. Trade Representative. America’s trade deficit with Israel stood at $7.4 billion in 2024.
During the meeting, the two leaders also spoke about the 59 hostages still in Hamas captivity, Turkey’s effort to grow its influence in Syria, and the Trump administration’s Saturday meeting with representatives of Iran regarding its nuclear program.
“Doing a deal will be preferable to doing the opposite,” Trump said.
Prior to Netanyahu’s arrival Trump reportedly had a call with French President Emmanuel Macron, Egyptian president Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and Abdullah II of Jordan.

Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) defended President Donald Trump&#8217;s tariffs during a Monday morning appearance on Fox News, saying that cattle ranchers in his state were grateful for the president&#8217;s efforts to balance trade by pushing back against the barriers put in place by other nations.
Barrasso told the hosts of Fox&#8217;s &#8220;America&#8217;s Newsroom&#8221; that because of trade barriers imposed by nations like Australia, beef producers were forced into an uneven — and unfair — trade market because they had to compete for domestic sales with countries that wouldn&#8217;t even allow their product to be sold abroad.

&#8220;In terms of beef, the cattle producers, they are saying it is about time,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;One of the countries that you just showed on that slide before I came on, Australia — Australia has sold $29 billion worth of beef in the United States, and we haven&#8217;t been able to sell one hamburger in Australia because of barriers.&#8221;
&#8220;They showed Thailand, 30% tariffs on beef coming from the United States,&#8221; Barrasso said. &#8220;Vietnam, 50%. You look at these numbers, and the ranchers of Wyoming are saying, &#8216;Thank you, Mr. President, it is about time.'&#8221;
