President Donald Trump signed the One Big, Beautiful Bill into law on Independence Day, meeting his self-imposed deadline for the monumental budget bill after a long legislative struggle.
Trump — who had urged Congress to pass the bill and send it to his desk by July 4 — walked out onto the South Portico of the White House with First Lady Melania Trump and stood for the national anthem and a military flyover, after which he approached the microphone to offer a few words.
&#8220;I want to wish you a very happy Independence Day, happy Fourth of July. This is gonna be something special. There&#8217;s spirit in this country, we haven&#8217;t seen anything like it in many, many years,&#8221; the president said, later mentioning Operation Midnight Hammer and the military personnel who participated in the operation to destroy Iran&#8217;s nuclear capabilities.
Trump continued, noting his administration&#8217;s successes in recent months.

This is a triumph of democracy on the birthday of democracy,&#8221; Trump added, going on to enumerate the details of the Big, Beautiful Bill, and thanking prominent Republicans who helped get the legislation across the finish line.
&#8220;The Golden Age of America is upon us. We are in the Golden Age,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;It&#8217;s going to be a period of time the likes of which I don&#8217;t think this country has ever experienced before.&#8221;
Trump then descended the stairs, shook hands with various figures, took his pen, and — flanked by House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise — signed the Big, Beautiful Bill.

The bill makes permanent Trump&#8217;s 2017 tax cuts, increases funding for border security, enacts work requirements for able-bodied recipients of Medicaid and food stamps, defunds Planned Parenthood for a year, funds the “Golden Dome” missile defense program, and ends taxes on tips and overtime.

The Republican-controlled House voted 218-214 to pass the measure shortly after Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) wrapped up an hours-long speech delaying the bill’s advancement. To reach the final vote, Johnson spent hours working with Republican holdouts to get them to back the measure.
The Senate vote was even closer, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote.

Joey Chestnut, the world-famous hot dog eating champion, returns to the Nathan&#8217;s Famous Hot Dog Eating Competition after taking a year off — and is expected to dominate once again.
Chestnut, who was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hot-dog-legend-joey-chestnut-signs-with-vegan-brand-gets-booted-from-july-4th-competition" target="_blank" rel="noopener">booted</a> from last year&#8217;s July 4 competition after taking a deal with fake meat company Impossible Foods, announced his return last month.
&#8220;I&#8217;m thrilled to be returning to the Nathan&#8217;s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest,&#8221; Chestnut <a href="https://x.com/joeyjaws/status/1934612017052336469" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. &#8220;This event means the world to me. It&#8217;s a cherished tradition, a celebration of American culture, and a huge part of my life.&#8221;
Although Chestnut did not compete in Nathan&#8217;s 2024 competition, he still holds 55 world records for various eating competitions. According to <a href="https://majorleagueeating.com/eaters/106" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Major League Eating,</a> the moderating body behind the hot dog eating contest, Chestnut also holds records for eating 121 Twinkies in six minutes, 390 shrimp wontons in eight minutes, and, of course, 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes.
Chestnut has earned the &#8220;Mustard Belt&#8221; 16 times since 2008, the most anyone has ever won. He holds a strong lead over the competitor with the next highest number of wins, Takeru Kobayashi, who earned six belts before retiring due to health concerns.

During his hiatus from Nathan&#8217;s Famous competition, Chestnut set the <a href="https://x.com/joeyjaws/status/1916645992176173327" target="_blank" rel="noopener">record</a> for the most Buffalo Wild Wings eaten in one sitting, consuming 14.4 pounds of wings.
Patrick Bertoletti, who won last year&#8217;s competition with 58 hot dogs, has expressed his concern over Chestnut&#8217;s return. In an <a href="https://www.sportsbookreview.com/picks/more-sports/patrick-bertoletti-interview-nathans-hot-dog-eating-contest-2025/?utm_content=336287137&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;hss_channel=tw-174346152" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> with Sportsbook Review, Bertoletti said, “I want to do better so that I can silence [Chestnut].&#8221;
&#8220;My goal the whole time was to do better than last year, and that&#8217;s always been the case,&#8221; Bertoletti said. &#8220;If Joey&#8217;s not there, then I have a very good shot of winning if I do that. And now that Joey is going, it&#8217;s the same thing.&#8221;

Online prediction market Polymarket already has a few bets on the competition live. Fans have given Chestnut about a 90% chance of <a href="https://polymarket.com/event/nathans-hot-dog-eating-contest-winner/will-joey-chestnut-win-the-2025-nathans-hot-dog-eating-contest" target="_blank" rel="noopener">winning</a>. They are also more divided on how many hot dogs Chestnut will eat, with most <a href="https://polymarket.com/event/will-the-76-hot-dog-record-be-broken-on-july-4-172" target="_blank" rel="noopener">doubting</a> he will beat his own record.

As the United States prepares to celebrate her 249th birthday, a growing number of Americans say they’ve noticed a marked decline in patriotism.
More specifically, 44% of respondents in an <a href="https://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/5379913-44-percent-say-us-becoming-less-patriotic-survey/">Economist/YouGov survey</a> published this week said they believe the U.S. is becoming less patriotic. In comparison, a much smaller 14% said they think the nation is becoming more so.
Jesse Parks, a former U.S. Army Sergeant who served in Afghanistan, has noticed this shift in attitude.
“[Seeing] flags being burnt and seeing protests being more frequent,” Parks told the Daily Wire, “it tears down the country.”
Born into a military family, Parks said he was inspired to follow in the footsteps of those who came before him.
“All my uncles, dad, older brother, served. Everybody,” he said.
Parks initially applied to serve in the United States Marine Corps, but his application was rejected. Undeterred, he enlisted later in the United States Army, where he was accepted and rose through the ranks.
When asked why he enlisted, Parks said, “I think you join the military to fight for your country. It opens up a lot of doors, but in the end, you fight.”
He was deployed to Afghanistan in December 2010, where he said his unit’s primary mission was to train and advise the Afghan National Army Basic Training Command Teams, alongside the British and French Armies. He later became an infantry fire team leader.
Parks said that patriotism was a major factor in his decision to join the armed forces. He described it as “a love of your country put into action, whether that&#8217;s military, that&#8217;s political, or that&#8217;s civil service.”
But what is “patriotism” anyway?
“Patriotism” <a href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/patriotism">is often defined</a> as a “love for or devotion to one’s country.”
Yet, a growing number of Americans say they don’t see a shared sense of admiration for the country they call home. Lightning rod political issues ranging from abortion to illegal immigration, along with a major political realignment that has seen the Democratic Party lurch harder to the left and the Republican Party lurch harder to the right, have revealed a simmering disunity.
“[Patriotism is] a big part of what allows us to progress,” Parks said. “It is what kind of helps us progress as a society. We don&#8217;t all have to have the same views, but as long as we have patriotism, which is different than nationalism, as long as it&#8217;s there, it allows us to progress.”

While Parks has an expressed love of country, his may not be a shared passion: only 67% of people claim to be extremely or very proud to be American, down from 91% in 2004, according to a 2024 <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/646655/american-pride-remains-near-record-low.aspx">Gallup</a> survey.
A separate <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/646655/american-pride-remains-near-record-low.aspx">Marist</a> poll likewise found a majority of Americans have noticed this shift, with 52% of respondents stating that the country seems less patriotic than it was just a few years ago.
The disunity and decline may feel all the more evident with the recent riots and attacks on first responders.
“[T]here has been a perversion of patriotism,” Parks told the Daily Wire.
“Groups like Antifa seem like they don&#8217;t care about this country and want to tear it down,” he said. “January 6 was similar; it was a movement to dismantle the country. It is seen on both sides.” 
Rather than being complicit in this division, Parks said, groups such as Antifa should “consider the opportunity they have in this time in history to affect the country’s direction, and to act accordingly in a constructive manner.”
Despite all of this, the Army veteran sees hope for the future.
“There is a lot of talk about division in the country at the moment, but I don’t think that is anything new,” Parks said. “I hope people will get involved over the issues they think are important.”
Participation “will increase their sense of pride and reignite a love for their country.”

Americans Say Patriotism Is Fading. One Army Veteran Is Pushing Back With Steely-Eyed Optimism

Let’s be real: most of us aren’t crossing the Delaware this 4th of July. We’re crossing the backyard in flip-flops to open the cooler. And that’s fine. That’s American, even. But while we’re manning the grill and dodging bottle rockets, we’d do well to remember: this day isn’t just about fireworks and flag-themed cupcakes. It’s about something far rarer — and far more worth preserving.
Because America didn’t just happen. It was made — and paid for.
Two hundred and forty-nine years ago, a bunch of men in powdered wigs looked at the most powerful empire on Earth and said, “Nah—we’re going to try something different. Hold my beer.” They didn’t tweet about tyranny. They fought it. They signed their names on a document that would’ve earned them a hangman’s rope had things gone south. And then they backed it up — starving, freezing, bleeding, and winning, so that one day you and I could argue over gas prices and post pics on Instagram.
They weren’t fighting for tax credits or better trade deals. They were fighting for the radical belief that our rights come from God, not government. And they risked everything for it.
We, by comparison, are just risking the brisket.
But maybe that’s the point. You don’t have to be Washington at Valley Forge to honor the Spirit of ’76. You just have to be intentional. You just have to remember.
Because the truth is, most Americans today couldn’t name five Founders. Some think the Revolutionary War was a Marvel spinoff. And every summer, like clockwork, the usual suspects try to reduce the Founding to a footnote in oppression — something to apologize for, not admire.
But the American Founding wasn’t a mistake. It was a miracle. Were the Founders flawed men? Sure. We all are. But the system they built — this Constitutional Republic grounded in natural rights and self-government — is still the greatest experiment in liberty the world has ever seen.
And it’s worth celebrating.
So, this Independence Day, take a minute — take five — to appreciate not just the fireworks, but the fire that lit the Revolution.
Maybe take some time to think about Jack Jouett. You’ve probably never heard his name. But when British troops were closing in on Thomas Jefferson and the Virginia Legislature, Jouett rode through the night, 40 miles on rough terrain, branches slashing his face, to warn them.
He didn’t do it for fame. He didn’t expect a reward. He was just a regular guy who refused to let tyranny win on his watch.
So too were the legions of cold, hungry, bleeding men in Washington’s army who crossed the icy Delaware River on Christmas night, 1776. They marched barefoot through the snow to launch a surprise attack on a Hessian outpost in Trenton. Some died before the battle even began. But the rest fought, and they won. And with that win, the Revolution roared back to life.
These weren’t abstract ideals on parchment. These were men, enduring literal hell so that future generations could taste Heaven’s gift: liberty.
And that gift has only survived this long because, in every generation, regular people stepped up to keep it alive.
That includes you.
John Adams said, “Posterity! You will never know how much it cost the present generation to preserve your freedom. I hope you will make good use of it.”
So, if you want to make good use of it, here’s your checklist for a meaningful 4th of July:

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Read the Declaration of Independence with your kids. Yes, even if they roll their eyes. Especially if they roll their eyes.</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Fly the flag. Not because it looks good on your porch, but because you know what it cost.</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Ask your kids what freedom means to them. Not a lecture — a conversation. They’re starving for meaning. Feed them something real.</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Turn off TikTok. Read a chapter of the Federalist Papers. Or watch The Patriot instead of a reality show about people with fake names and real dysfunction.</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Say grace. And thank God you live in a country where you can.</li>
</ul>
And if you’re Gen Z, no one expects you to recite the Constitution from memory. But maybe — just maybe — start asking questions. Read a book. Volunteer. Serve your neighbor. Build something with your hands. Log some service hours instead of screentime.
Because guess what? Next year is America’s 250th birthday. That’s not just a milestone. It’s a moment. A year from now, when the fireworks explode and the flags wave, don’t be the one just snapping selfies. Be the one who knows why it matters. Let this year be your warm-up lap. Spend the next 12 months loading the intellectual cannons. Read the Founding documents. Relearn the history. Equip yourself with truth.
Because if America is going to survive another 250 years, it won’t be because we got more “progressive.” It won’t be because of people like Barack Obama, who infamously said “I believe in American exceptionalism, just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism.”
No, if America is to survive, it will be thanks to people who fought to conserve who we are: a nation under God. A people forged in sacrifice. A Republic—if we can keep it.
You can’t defend a country you refuse to define. And you certainly can’t celebrate one you won’t even elevate.
So, fire up the Weber. Salute the flag. Tell your kids the truth. Thank the ones who served. And say a prayer for the country that lets you do all five without asking permission.
We don’t need more guilt. We need more gratitude.
We don’t need perfect people. We need present patriots.
And we don’t need another political lecture. We need more parents, more truth, more God, more America.
Now, hold my beer. The brisket is burning.

The Fourth of July must be very hard for the British.
I mean, imagine fumbling a sizable chunk of your empire, watching it grow into the greatest country in the world, and then having them celebrate the breakup every year with pyrotechnics? Not even 250 years is long enough to get over that.
So, I don’t begrudge our pals across the pond for finding ways to cope when Independence Day rolls around. Like the good chaps over at JL Partners, who commissioned a poll that found that one in five Americans want to replace the president with the British monarch. Or their fellow expatriate, POLITICO’s Jack Blanchard, who <a href="https://www.politico.com/newsletters/playbook/2025/07/03/congress-caves-again-00438202?nname=playbook&amp;nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&amp;nrid=00000155-9c90-dad1-ad7d-fed474bb0000" target="_blank" rel="noopener">printed the poll results</a> in this morning’s Playbook.
“You heard me right,” Blanchard writes. “Polling and strategy firm JL Partners asked 1,000 U.S. voters if they support or oppose replacing the current president of the United States with the British monarch. The survey found 19% of Americans supported the idea.”
This support was “even higher among certain groups,” JL Partners’ James Johnson told POLITICO, noting that “more than one in three 18-29-year-olds back the idea.”
Does Gen Z really yearn for a return to the monarchy? Well, not exactly.

Johnson confirmed to The Daily Wire that JL Partners collected information through an online, opt-in poll. According to the <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/03/05/online-opt-in-polls-can-produce-misleading-results-especially-for-young-people-and-hispanic-adults/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pew Research Center</a>, these polls “can produce misleading results, especially for young people.”
The issue, it seems, is that young people who opt into these polls and click through quickly, “with as little effort as possible to earn money or other rewards.” The result? “Studies have shown that bogus respondents can cause opt-in surveys to overestimate rare attitudes and behaviors.”
Pew tested this theory by asking online opt-in respondents if they were licensed to operate a nuclear submarine. Twelve percent said yes. The actual proportion of Americans licensed to do? Less than 1%.
In other words, you can pretty much get 18-29-year-olds to say yes to anything, if you ask. This is why there’s still a market for Chappell Roan singles, or nonalcoholic beers.
And Gen Z isn’t perfect. Just <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/692150/american-pride-slips-new-low.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">41% of them say</a> they’re “extremely or very proud to be Americans,” according to Gallup.
But that doesn’t mean young Americans want King Charles to swoop in and hand them a cup of tea. In fact, Gen Z is moving <a href="https://www.vox.com/politics/414266/republican-conservative-two-gen-z-young-voter-trumpier-progressive." target="_blank" rel="noopener">more and more to the Right</a>. And why wouldn’t they? We’re entering a new American golden age.

And what’s happening in England? Rappers are <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/state-dept-revokes-bob-vylans-visa-as-agency-drops-him-and-u-s-tour-is-canceled" target="_blank" rel="noopener">calling for jihad</a>, and people are <a href="https://x.com/ByDobson/status/1936014831003615621" target="_blank" rel="noopener">losing their minds</a> about the 78-degree heat. Yeah, no thanks.
At the end of the day, you can never trust the polls. They said <a href="https://x.com/ByDobson/status/1936014831003615621" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Trump would lose</a> in November, and look how that turned out. But we don’t need statistics to know how Americans feel about monarchy. As Americans, we know deep down that we would never, could never have a king. That ship sailed long ago — long before we even declared independence in the first place.
As John Adams <a href="https://founders.archives.gov/documents/Adams/99-02-02-6854" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> to Hezekiah Niles in 1818: “What do We mean by the American Revolution? Do We mean the American War? The Revolution was effected before the War commenced. The Revolution was in the Minds and Hearts of the People.”
That Revolution lives on in the hearts and minds of today’s Americans. And, whether they know it or not, it lives on in the hearts and minds of today’s Brits, too.

WASHINGTON — The pilots who flew into Iran on a mission to bomb the Iranian nuclear facilities will join President Donald Trump at the White House on Friday, The Daily Wire has learned.
The B-2 pilots will be in attendance on Friday at the White House Fourth of July celebrations, two White House officials shared with The Daily Wire. The White House celebration will also include a flyover by B-2 Spirit bombers, the jets that conducted the strikes on Iran earlier this month in Operation Midnight Hammer, according to CBS.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/iran-mission-pilots-trump-white-house-july-4/">confirmed in a statement</a> that the president &#8220;looks forward to celebrating our nation&#8217;s founding on Friday in the nation&#8217;s capital.&#8221;
&#8220;To join in the celebration, the might of America&#8217;s Air Force will conduct a flyover featuring our state-of-the-art F-22s, B-2s, and F-35s &#8211; the same air capabilities used for the decisive and successful strikes on Iran&#8217;s nuclear facilities,&#8221; Leavitt added.
Trump is expected to speak at the event, and additional personnel from the base where the bombers were based (Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri) will attend.

During an interview on “Sunday Morning Futures,” Fox News anchor Maria Bartiromo <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pilots-of-b-2-bombers-that-hit-iran-nuclear-sites-coming-to-white-house-trump-says">discussed</a> the &#8220;courageous&#8221; pilots with Trump, and asked the president if he planned to honor them.
“Yes, they’re going to come to the White House,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;But what you said is right. These people flew 36 hours in a small space, a big plane, but a small spaces mostly occupied by bombs, and they flew so brilliantly.&#8221;
“They hit a target the size of this circle … a little target, they say half the size of a refrigerator door from 50,000 feet up in the air,&#8221; he added. &#8220;Going at a rapid speed, because they’re going very fast when they’re over a pretty rough territory. And they hit it every single time. And then they knocked out two other sites aside from that.”

During a news conference on Operation Midnight Hammer, Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine shared that the B-2 bombers launched from the United States and refueled multiple times while in flight during the trip to Iranian airspace. The bombers struck targets at Fordo and Natanz, and United States submarines fired Tomahawk missiles that hit Isfahan moments later. The B-2 bombers returned home to Missouri after the attack.

This year, several local governments are switching up their 4th of July celebrations, conducting drone shows in lieu of fireworks.
Lincoln City, Oregon; Redwood City, California; Waynesboro, Virginia; and Pasadena, California, are all jumping on the drone show bandwagon.
Lincoln City provided an explanation for the change alongside the schedule for their 4th of July celebrations: “We are making this change in response to growing community concerns about the environmental and wildlife impacts, public safety issues, and wildfire risk that can be caused by traditional fireworks shows.”
Redwood City stated that their new tradition of drone shows will provide “all the &#8216;wow&#8217; without the worry.”
<a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-06-19/no-fireworks-but-drones-how-pasadena">Pasadena</a> announced that they would replace the annual fireworks at the Rose Bowl &#8212; known for being one of the largest and longest running shows in the nation &#8212; with a drone show.
The debate of fireworks versus drones is a hot one.

On Monday, Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) published a <a href="https://www.michigan.gov/egle/newsroom/mi-environment/2025/06/30/are-fireworks-bad-for-air-quality">report</a> warning residents that “EGLE’s air monitoring network often shows high levels of particulate pollution over the 4th of July.”

Additionally, it&#8217;s claimed that drone shows are more inclusive and respectful of wildlife and pets.
“Drones produce almost no noise, allowing pets and veterans that may have PTSD to enjoy aerial entertainment, unlike fireworks,” says <a href="https://parade.com/living/why-drone-shows-may-replace-fireworks">Tyler Kubicz</a>, production manager for Sky Elements Drones, the largest drone show company in the United States.
“Drones also do not produce debris or smoke, allowing for those with compromised immune systems to enjoy the show too.&#8221;
“Fireworks frighten birds out of their nests, send terrified dogs and cats running away from their homes, and start fires that can quickly turn devastating,” PETA’s executive vice president commented in <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-06-19/no-fireworks-but-drones-how-pasadena">response</a> to Pasadena’s announcement in April.
Viewers say they appreciate the futuristic effects and storytelling capabilities of drones. &#8220;Reactions to the show in 2023 were overwhelmingly <a href="https://parade.com/living/why-drone-shows-may-replace-fireworks">positive</a>,” said Amber Thrill, operations manager for the city.
&#8220;The primary request through the 2023 event survey was for the drone show to be longer.”
On the flip side, drone shows are significantly more expensive, being approximately <a href="https://www.droneshowsoftware.com/news/the-growing-trend-of-integrated-drones-and-fireworks-shows">10 times</a> the cost of fireworks.
Fourth of July fireworks are also a <a href="https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-virginia-gazette-a-grand-exhibition/80529037/">centuries long</a> American tradition, and many Americans love the explosiveness and nostalgia of fireworks. This has led some cities to walk back on their changes.
“Redondo Beach and Laguna Beach switched back to fireworks after trying out drone shows, and some promoters of fireworks shows have voiced criticism over efforts to transition to drone shows,” writes the <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-06-19/no-fireworks-but-drones-how-pasadena">LA Times</a>.

Those words, from the preamble of the Declaration of Independence, which the Continental Congress formally announced 248 years ago tomorrow, were written by men of courage. The founding fathers knew if they were to establish a government of their own, a system where the people had the power, it would take a fight. Not just any fight, a battle against the most powerful monarchy in the world. In which losing, not only meant death, it meant being labeled a traitor for the remainder of history.
Did the founders create a perfect system? Of course not. Not every person was equal, or free, or counted as a full person. Brother fought against brother 90 years later to help right those wrongs. Yet, through it all, we&#8217;ve marched forward as a country, always willing to be self-critical, and using the guiding principles our founding fathers laid out, tweaking where necessary, to create the freest, most spectacular nation the world has seen.
America is still not perfect now. But her imperfection is being used as the excuse to abolish her existence completely. That would be devastating, not just for us as citizens, but for the world. So in honor of our independence, let us highlight some of the ways we have veered astray from the path that led us to be the country we are today.
The border which makes up our nation is being ignored. If you read The Federalist Papers, especially Federalist No. 2 by John Jay, you&#8217;ll learn that one of the most important ideas advanced by the founding fathers is the idea that America keeps a cohesive, national identity. This was part of their argument to convince states to ratify the new U.S. Constitution. Over the last two and half centuries, America has become a multicultural melting pot, where different people of many races and religions can come together and achieve miraculous ends. That only works, however, when we agree that our American identity is stronger than that which divides us.

Increasingly, that is not the case. No care whatsoever is being paid to the type of individuals entering and remaining in our country. Now understand, I don’t blame anyone, ever, for having a desire to become American. That’s what’s supposed to happen when you’re the best. People vote with their feet, right? Well, when you leave your home country to come here, that’s the sincerest form of flattery. All of our ancestors did that at some point. But a nation cannot exist when the border that makes said nation what it is, gets ignored with impunity. Add a welfare state on top of it all and this becomes unsustainable. To paraphrase Milton Friedman, you can have open borders or a welfare state, but you can&#8217;t have both.
Consider now our national debt — well over $30 trillion. You might as well replace trillion with a made up word, what’s the difference? James Madison, the fourth president and one of the authors of the Constitution, <a href="https://founders.archives.gov/documents/Madison/01-13-02-0106" target="_blank" rel="noopener">once said</a>, &#8220;public debt is a public curse, and in a republican government a greater curse than any.”
Think now about our system of taxation. The mantra that carries us into Independence Day and echoes through the skies as if it were shouted yesterday, &#8220;No taxation without representation.&#8221; And that was over a 2% tax on a breakfast beverage. What do we have now? We’re taxed when we receive money, when we spend money, when we invest money, when we die with money. I leave a house every morning that is taxed, in a car that is taxed, fueled by gas that is taxed, to go to a company that is taxed, where I get a paycheck that is taxed, on the state level, then on the federal level, all the while playing this withholding game, where the IRS knows how much I owe but makes me guess, then if I’m wrong they can put me in jail. And none of that addresses the biggest tax of all, inflation, which is skyrocketing because the bureaucracy in Washington won’t turn off the printing presses, just to send those dollars, which should be used to better the lives of Americans, overseas. That’s what we put up with. Our great-grandfathers told King George to come get some if he wants a levy on tea, and we’re left with pennies for every buck we make.
How? Inch by inch. None of this happened over night. 248 years is a long time. The first American income tax wasn’t signed into law until 1861, then, more famously, we had the 16th Amendment passed by Congress in 1909 and ratified in 1913.
I could go on and on about the ways we&#8217;ve diverged from what the founders wanted: Our military-industrial complex that Eisenhower warned about; Sex trafficking on an industrial scale; abortion on an industrial scale; Godlessness at every turn.
Yes, it’s true our founding fathers had differing points of view on religion, Thomas Jefferson particularly, but, to solidify my point, hear these words of John Adams after the official resolution of congress was adopted:
<blockquote>I am apt to believe that [Independence Day] will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty.</blockquote>
I doubt he could fathom what our children now see on a daily basis.

What kind of society tolerates this? Well, as of now, ours does. Every corporation and local government, with very few exceptions, supports this.
Despite all of these existential threats, heavy as they may hang on our hearts, we must never lose hope. We have marched together through much worse. But it does take work. We can not do the bare minimum, we can not turn a blind eye to the perils of our nation, and just expect that Star-Spangled Banner to wave in perpetuity.
So here are my suggestions for how to right the ship, so that America can celebrate another birthday, 248 years from now.
First: Vote. Vote for better leaders. The vast majority of our ancestors had no say in the people who ruled them. We do, yet roughly a third of Americans don’t let their voice be heard. We can complain ad nauseam about a two-party system, or that all politicians are the same, but we can change that. Inform yourself, read, and don&#8217;t just read about current candidates and policies. Read about American history. Read the Federalist Papers, the Constitution, understand what it took for us to have what we have.
Second: Prioritize family. The nuclear family. Form stable relationships. Get married and have kids. I will never understand how we arrived at a place in society where having a family is considered &#8220;white patriarchal supremacy,&#8221; or whatever leftists phrase is being used today, but I do understand that the goal of such phrases is to destroy this country, because those who state it understand how essential the family is for America.
Third: We must incentivize actions of good and deter those of bad. Yes, this seems overly-general, but I think about it every day. We have turned, upside down, every notion of what is good, and just, and beautiful. We have ignored, even sanctioned, misconduct to the point it is commonplace. There is a reason major cities across this nation are too unsafe to live in right now. That’s a byproduct of criminals not being punished for crimes. I&#8217;m not saying we need to bring back drawing and quartering, I’m just saying … we may need to bring back drawing and quartering. I have little doubt it would be effective.
We also must remember the purpose of education. The goal is not to write A+ on every kid&#8217;s paper, it’s not to spare feelings when a child is suited for something different than his peers. The purpose is not to fill college classrooms to max capacity, or to print as many diplomas as possible. It’s not to indoctrinate children with confusion to appease the sexual fetishes of misguided adults. If we’re to indoctrinate, let us do so with the words of Thomas Paine and Thomas Sowell. The lone purpose of education is to pass down the most essential knowledge, so that future generations may carry this country forward.
Lastly, especially in the age of social media, we must cherish our local communities, not merely live in them. Get outside, touch grass, help a neighbor, shop local. Live in such a way, that if the luxuries provided by the global establishment were to vanish today, you wouldn’t miss a beat. You would still be a leader, those closest to you can depend on.
This Fourth of July, as you celebrate with friends and family, remember the words of Will Durant, &#8220;A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within.&#8221;

Hot Dog eating legend Joey Chestnut signed with a vegan weiner brand and now he’s out of the annual July 4th Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Competition he wins every year.
California-born Chestnut, who recently signed up with a brand called Impossible Foods, won’t be allowed to compete in the Coney Island tradition and defend the title he’s won 16 times, including every year since 2016, the <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/06/11/business/joey-chestnut-banned-from-2024-nathans-hot-dog-eating-contest/">New York Post</a> reported.
The food champ has completely dominated the competition earning a world record in 2021 with 76 dogs and buns and last year keeping the crown after chomping down on 62 wieners and buns.
The July 4th Nathan’s competition has taken place every year at the corner of Stillwell and Surf avenues, just steps away from the Boardwalk, since 1916.
A representative for Major League Eating (MLE), which runs the event for Nathan’s told the outlet that “the organizers bent over backwards to meet Chestnut’s various other demands,&#8221; but had to draw a line when he became the face of a different hot dog brand, with beef wieners it says are made by plants.
“We are devastated to learn that Joey Chestnut has chosen to represent a rival brand that sells plant-based hot dogs rather than competing in the 2024 Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest,” a statement from MLE read.
“MLE and Nathan’s went to great lengths in recent months to accommodate Joey and his management team, agreeing to the appearance fee and allowing Joey to compete in a rival, unbranded hot dog eating contest on Labor Day,” the statement added.
“For nearly two decades we have worked under the same basic hot dog exclusivity provisions. However, it seems that Joey and his managers have prioritized a new partnership with a different brand over our long-time relationship,” the statement continued.

MLE closed out its statement by labeling Chestnut “an American hero.”
“We would love nothing more than to have him at the Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest,” the company said. “We hope he returns when he is not representing a rival brand.”
One source told the outlet that the hot dog-eating champ was paid $200,000 to appear in the contest last year, and was offered a four-year contract for $1.2 million going forward.  
“The two sides could still come to a resolution before July 4, but it depends on Joey,” an insider said.
“He’s the Michael Jordan of competitive eating,” the source added. “But imagine if Michael Jordan said to Nike, ‘I love being the face of Nike but I want to do commercials for Adidas too.&#8221;
Chestnut took to social media and disputed some of the claims for why he&#8217;s out this year. He wrote on <a href="https://x.com/joeyjaws/status/1800663578070131189">X</a>,  &#8220;I do not have a contract with MLE or Nathans and they are looking to change the rules from past years as it relates to other partners I can work with. This is apparently the basis on which I’m being banned, and it doesn’t impact the July 4th event.&#8221;

A 43-year-old father of three who was in the World Trade Center during the September 11, 2001, terror attack died on Tuesday after saving children involved in a boating accident on Lake Michigan.
Luke Laidley jumped into the water near Elder Beach in Winnetka, Illinois, after a group of children fell in when a tube his boat was pulling flipped, ABC 7 Chicago <a href="https://abc7chicago.com/winnetka-news-lake-michigan-centennial-beach-park/13465934/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. After spending a minute submerged while <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/07/07/hero-dad-luke-laidley-who-survived-9-11-attacks-dies-saving-group-of-kids-from-capsized-raft-on-july-4th/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rescuing</a> the children, Laidley appeared above the surface and was pulled onto the boat, according to fire officials. Those boating with Laidley quickly began CPR on him, and the 9/11 survivor was rushed to the hospital but died a short time later.

According to his family, Laidley was 21 years old when he took his first job with Morgan Stanley in September 2001. During his second day on the job on the 61st floor of Tower Two, both World Trade Center Towers were hit by hijacked airplanes in a terrorist attack. Thirteen Morgan Stanley employees died in the attack, but Laidley safely evacuated, the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/07/07/hero-dad-luke-laidley-who-survived-9-11-attacks-dies-saving-group-of-kids-from-capsized-raft-on-july-4th/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. 
“As a survivor of the 61[st] floor of Tower 2, he later wrote, ‘I encourage all of us to count our blessings each and every day. Give of yourself and expect nothing in return. And become part of something that is greater than yourself,’” his family said.

On Wednesday, an Ohio man became the 12th person to drown in Lake Michigan and 33rd to drown in the Great Lakes. Last year, there were 53 drownings in the Great Lakes by July 4. Drownings often rise when water temperatures in the lakes warm, leading to more people feeling comfortable swimming in the water which is often plagued by strong undercurrents. Some of Lake Michigan has reached temperatures in the low 70s this year.

Laidley leaves behind his wife Lauren and three children ages 7, 5, and 3, according to the Post. 
“Luke lived his life guided by his experiences and he had several that allowed him to bestow compassion, love, inspiration, and leadership to others. He lived a hero&#8217;s song,” his family wrote. “Luke Laidley embraced and lived this belief to the end on July 4, 2023, where he risked his life for the children who were struggling when their tube flipped on Lake Michigan.”

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/bud-light-now-cheaper-than-water-following-dylan-mulvaney-debacle" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Budweiser</a> was criticized by social media users over a Fourth of July message the company posted Tuesday.
In the <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/budweiser-fourth-july-message-sparks-furor-beyond-disgusting-1810910" target="_blank" rel="noopener">30-second ad</a>, F-16 pilot Lt. Col. Dan Rooney provides a voiceover promoting the partnership between <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/budweiser-releases-new-ad-amid-transgender-controversy-gets-blasted-online" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the beer brand</a> and Rooney&#8217;s educational scholarship program, Folds of Honor. It comes amid a massive backlash against Bud Light, which is owned by the same parent company as Budweiser, over its partnership with transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney.
&#8220;Budweiser has believed in Folds of Honor for 13 years,&#8221; Rooney <a href="https://twitter.com/budweiserusa/status/1673724792673796098?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in the voice over. &#8220;Today, we honor our veterans and the 44,000 scholarships awarded to their families. &#8230; Service never stops, and neither will we.&#8221;

The tweet from the company read, &#8220;To all who protect America’s freedom, This Bud’s For You. This July 4th, we&#8217;re proud to work with [Folds of Honor] to help military families today, and every day.&#8221;
Online commenters were quick to blast the company, with some accusing it of using dead soldiers to try to rehabilitate its image after the Mulvaney fiasco.
&#8220;Using dead soldiers to try to dig back from sponsoring child drag shows and misogyny is beyond disgusting,&#8221; one social media user wrote.
Another person tweeted, &#8220;Too late, Budweiser. Too late.&#8221;
While another added,&#8221;You&#8217;re ruined.&#8221;

There were also numerous comments from online users suggesting what the company needed to do was &#8220;Apologize.&#8221;
&#8220;Don&#8217;t understand how Budweiser just doesn&#8217;t come forward and apologize to all of us for their huge mistakes and make it right! &#8221; one person wrote. &#8220;Maybe they would start selling a few beers. The Ad looks great but will not make up for their mess!
Another added, &#8220;Folds of Honor needs to find a new partner asap. Partnering with woke globalists is hurting a good cause.&#8221;
The ad was posted on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrPMI0ixtQ8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">YouTube</a> too, and comments there were just as critical toward the beer company.
&#8220;No one actually serving, or who probably serves, wants anything to do with this morally bankrupt company,&#8221; one person wrote.
&#8220;It&#8217;s not a boycott, it&#8217;s banishment,&#8221; another added.
While another commented, &#8220;Bud&#8217;s determined to drag every past connection down with them. Wouldn&#8217;t it be better to apologize, fire those responsible, and start on mending&#8230;No? You sure about that, Bud? OK, then, carry on&#8230;just continue to ignore your customer base.&#8221;

Average per-person spending on Fourth of July food items rose to $93.34 in 2023 amid <a href="https://www.usinflationcalculator.com/inflation/current-inflation-rates/">persistent inflation</a>, new <a class="c-link" href="https://nrf.com/research-insights/holiday-data-and-trends/independence-day/independence-day-data-center" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-stringify-link="https://nrf.com/research-insights/holiday-data-and-trends/independence-day/independence-day-data-center" data-sk="tooltip_parent">data</a> from a National Retail Federation (NRF) survey found.
The figure is the highest ever recorded by the NRF since the survey began in 2003, marking a $9.22 increase since last year when the individual cost averaged out to $84.12. The survey, conducted from June 1st to June 7th, fielded responses from 8,225 consumers.
While the average per-person cost of Fourth of July food items was just $68.16 in 2014, the sum has grown every year except 2019. The report comes as Americans continue to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/white-house-brags-about-chart-showing-inflation-skyrocketed-after-biden-took-office">struggle with</a> inflation, which hit a <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2022/07/13/us-inflation-new-40-year-high-june-00045541">40 year high</a> in 2022.
“The cost of a 4th of July cookout in 2021 is down $0.16 from (2020),” the Biden administration previously boasted despite <a href="https://www.usinflationcalculator.com/inflation/current-inflation-rates/">severe inflation</a>. However, NRF found that the price actually increased by more than $4 from 2020 to 2021.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) <a href="https://www.bls.gov/opub/ted/2022/consumer-price-index-unchanged-over-the-month-up-8-5-percent-over-the-year-in-july-2022.htm#:~:text=SUBSCRIBE-,Consumer%20Price%20Index%20unchanged%20over%20the%20month%2C%20up%208.5%20percent,the%20year%2C%20in%20July%202022&amp;text=The%20Consumer%20Price%20Index%20for,and%201.0%20percent%20in%20May.">reports</a> a 10.9% increase in the price of consumer food goods from July 2021 to July 2022, the largest increase over 12 months since May 1979. BLS notes that “prices for food at home rose 13.1 percent,” while there was a 7.9% increase in the cost of food away from home in the 12-month span.

A recent <a href="https://www.wellsfargo.com/com/insights/agri-food-intelligence/fourth-july-food-report/">report</a> on food inflation from Wells Fargo notes that the average cost of beer has increased by 8% since last year, while the price of an average 12-ounce soft drink has risen by 54 cents, or 14%. The cost of a pound of chocolate chip cookies is up about 14% since last year, while the price of bread increased by 22%. Prices for ground beef and pork chops showed minor price increases of about 1%.
 The costs of ice cream and processed cheese are up 9% and 10%, respectively, though the average cost of milk fell in 2023. The price of potato chips surged 15% since last year, while the costs of chicken breasts and eggs decreased.
But while costs have risen, the NRF survey found that 87% of respondents plan to celebrate the Fourth of July this year.
