An air traffic controller at Ronald Reagan National Airport in Arlington, Virginia, was arrested and charged with battery and assault last week after a fight broke out in the control tower.
The Daily Mail <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14548725/Air-traffic-controllers-fight-Reagan-National-Airport-control-tower.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> last Friday that two air traffic controllers began throwing punches after an argument. At least six air traffic controllers and a supervisor were likely working when the fight broke out. On Monday, POLITICO <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/news/air-traffic-controller-charged-scuffle-202004507.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that Damon Marsalis Gaines, 39, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, was arrested by airport authorities and charged in connection with the scuffle.
“The employee is on administrative leave while we investigate the matter,” the Federal Aviation Administration told <a href="https://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/5225741-reagan-airport-controller-arrested/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Hill</a>. The FAA did not provide any further details about the charges or the nature of the fight in the air traffic control tower.
The arrest of an air traffic controller at DCA follows a deadly plane crash near the airport in January when an American Airlines flight with 64 people aboard collided with an Army Black Hawk helicopter over the Potomac River. While the investigation into the crash continues, authorities believe that DCA&#8217;s air traffic controllers properly warned the helicopter pilots about the inbound American Airlines flight.
National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy <a href="https://apnews.com/article/dc-plane-crash-investigation-ntsb-faa-9da42d267bf44049ecc57763961b0ac4#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in February that the helicopter&#8217;s cockpit recorder appeared to indicate that incomplete radio transmission likely prevented the pilots from hearing air traffic controllers telling them to &#8220;pass behind&#8221; the passenger jet seconds before the collision.
Lawmakers have called for the U.S. military to stop conducting helicopter training runs near the busy airport, and the FAA has banned those particular helicopter routes when planes are flying into the shorter runway at DCA. During a Congressional hearing on the crash, both Republicans and Democrats agreed that the tragedy could have been prevented.

A couple&#8217;s raucous fight at a Nashville Chili&#8217;s caused such a commotion that the entire mall where the restaurant is located was evacuated and the adjacent highway was closed in both directions.
Police were called to the Opry Mills Mall on Saturday due to reports of gunshots fired, and eventually had the entire place cleared out while they investigated. The Tennessee Department of Transportation closed down the highway exits to the mall for the next several hours, even after police said there was no evidence that any shots were fired.
Witnesses say there was panic as people sprinted out of the mall, reporting gunshots.
&#8220;We were sitting on the little swings over there, right past the food court, and everybody started running and I’m like, ‘What’s going on?,’&#8221; a witness named Ladonte <a href="https://www.wkrn.com/news/local-news/nashville/fight-leads-to-rushed-mass-exodus-at-opry-mills-mall-police-say/amp/">described to a local news station</a>. &#8220;And I see them on their walkie and he’s like, ‘Oh, they’re shooting! You need to get out! Run, run!&#8217; So we just start running this way, and the people that were coming in, I just told them, ‘Come on out because they’re shooting up in there!&#8217;”
Another woman said she was checking out at the Bass Pro Shop when people came running through yelling, &#8220;Code Red, Code Red, everybody&#8217;s gotta go.&#8221;
A man named Andrew Margerison was at a restaurant near the Chili&#8217;s and told a local news station he was convinced he heard seven gunshots.
&#8220;We were in like the first row of tables by O’Charley’s, which was right by the entry between TGI Friday’s and Applebee’s, so the first thing that was weird is there was kind of a small group of people that kind of hurried out from, we think, Applebee’s, but definitely down that corridor that leads out from in between the restaurants, and then, all of a sudden, we heard a distinctive seven pops,&#8221; he told the local station.
Nashville police say it was really just an angry girlfriend whose boyfriend worked at Chili&#8217;s. The public interest officer Kris Mumford says he believes people mistook plates crashing to the ground in the casual dining chain restaurant as gunshots.
&#8220;A female reportedly came into the restaurant and assaulted her boyfriend who was working there, the fight spilled outside, and that led to the calls of shots fired as people started to flee the mall or shelter in place,&#8221; the local news reported. &#8220;Mumford said the victim of the fight at Chili’s is safe, but detectives are still looking into the initial assault and whether or not weapons were involved.&#8221;
This is the second time in recent years that a false alarm of a shooting caused a mass exodus at the mall, which is attached to the famed Grand Ole Opry music hall. In <a href="https://www.wsmv.com/2023/12/28/no-shooting-opry-mills-teen-fight-mistaken-gunfire-police-say/">December 2023</a>, a fallen chair during a fight between two teenagers was mistaken for a gunshot, and the mall was cleared by law enforcement.

A huge brawl broke out in Charlotte between fans and members of Uruguay&#8217;s soccer team after players entered the stands following the team’s 1-0 loss to Colombia in the semifinals.
It happened Wednesday night in North Carolina at the Bank of America Stadium where the city was hosting CONMEBOL Copa America match, that represents all 50 states and around 60 countries, <a href="https://www.wsoctv.com/news/local/soccer-fans-fill-charlotte-copa-america-semifinal-bank-america-stadium/3HGUD5HUINDPDFKUBLWTSIVW3Y/">WSOC TV</a> reported. Immediately following Uruaguay’s loss, forward Darwin Núñez and about a dozen of his Uruguay teammates <a href="https://x.com/TSN_Sports/status/1811227359217139862">ran into the stands</a> where the major fight broke out.
In <a href="https://x.com/FavianRenkel/status/1811261365849624711">one clip</a>, Nunez can be seen throwing a punch to a fan wearing Colombia colors, the outlet noted. Things then got out of control between fans and players, with beverages and trash being thrown back and forth and people being shoved. 
“This is the best game I’ve ever seen in my life,” Daniel Arias, a fan, said.

“Whether you were cheering for Colombia or Uruguay the atmosphere at Bank of America Stadium was unmatched,” he added. “It was once in a lifetime.”
Another fan, Jorge Gonzales, said, “When I saw the players running, I was like OK, this is about to get ugly.”
Gonzales said he got out his phone and captured the fight which he said appeared to first start between fans and Uruguay players’ family members, the outlet noted.
“I was able to witness a Colombian fan, you know, start crying as his national anthem was played,” Gonzales said. “So, look more for those moments versus, you know, drinking a little bit too much and letting things spiral into chaos.”
The federation that oversees the match released a statement after the fight in Spanish, then translated into English, that read, “La Conmebol strongly condemns any act of violence.”
“Our work is based on the conviction that soccer connects and unites us through its positive values,&#8221; the organization statement added. &#8220;There is no place for intolerance and violence on and off the field. We invite everyone in the remaining days to pour all of their passion into cheering on their national teams and having an unforgettable party.”
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department was on scene to stop the fight and no one was arrested in connection to the brawl.

After Sunday night’s NASCAR All-Star Race, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. fired a punch at Kyle Busch because Busch had used his car to shove Stenhouse Jr. into a crash with the wall on Lap 2, forcing him out of the race.
Busch was apparently prompted to retaliate after Stenhouse Jr. went three-wide on the first lap. Stenhouse could not exit the track until the race was over, as the North Wilkesboro track had no way out of the infield. Stenhouse Jr. parked his car in Busch&#8217;s pit stall and told an interviewer he would be waiting for Busch, Yahoo Sports <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/nascar-ricky-stenhouse-jr-throws-punch-at-kyle-busch-after-all-star-race-020311803.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>, adding that he mentioned the 2011 incident when car owner Richard Childress, 65,  <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nascar-from-the-marbles/richard-childress-faces-discipline-punching-kyle-busch-150715971.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">punched</a> Busch, then 26. Busch had door-slammed Joey Coulter, who raced for Childress in the O&#8217;Reilly Auto Parts 250.

A Maryland high school saw at least ten fights break out in just one day this week, and two days later a student was caught with a loaded handgun.
The string of fights happened Tuesday and the gun incident occurred Thursday at Charles Herbert Flowers High School near Washington, D.C., prompting an investigation by school administrators.
On Thursday, a student was found in possession of a loaded handgun, the school said in a <a href="https://twitter.com/RamirezReports/status/1737878379871797616" target="_blank" rel="noopener">letter</a> to parents. The student was let in through a side door by another student and quickly confronted and searched by school security, the letter said.
No students or staff were harmed or actively threatened in the handgun incident, the school said.
Police <a href="https://www.wbal.com/prince-georges-police-arrest-charles-herbert-flowers-high-school-student-after-bringing-a-gun-to-school/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">arrested</a> an 18-year-old male suspect in connection with the gun incident. He faces several charges, including having a loaded handgun on his person.

The school sent a letter to parents about the fights on Wednesday, informing them about a &#8220;concerning series of multiple altercations.&#8221;

Students allegedly opened doors to the building, allowing students from other schools to join the fights, some of which were prompted over small things like one student stepping on another&#8217;s shoes, <a href="https://www.fox5dc.com/news/10-fights-break-out-at-prince-georges-county-high-school-maryland" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to some parents. Another factor was tension between groups of students from different neighborhoods, one parent said.
&#8220;They&#8217;re fighting outside in the parking lot where the school buses are,&#8221; one concerned parent <a href="https://www.fox5dc.com/news/10-fights-break-out-at-prince-georges-county-high-school-maryland" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Fox 5. &#8220;Like, where&#8217;s leadership? Where&#8217;s security?&#8221;
It is not yet clear whether any students were injured in the fights.
Some parents <a href="https://www.fox5dc.com/news/10-fights-break-out-at-prince-georges-county-high-school-maryland" target="_blank" rel="noopener">blamed</a> the fights on the absence of the school&#8217;s principal, Dr. Gorman Brown, who was placed on administrative leave in October for undisclosed reasons.
Brown was <a href="https://wjla.com/news/local/charles-herbert-flowers-high-school-prince-georges-county-maryland-principal-gorman-brown-reinstated-2-months-after-sudden-suspension-october-principals-union-administrative-leave-students-parents-education" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reinstated</a> on Wednesday and will likely return after Christmas break, according to the executive director of the Prince George’s County principals union.

Two NBA players were ejected from a game over the weekend after they engaged in a fight that ended up in the stands.
The Toronto Raptors&#8217; Christian Koloko and Miami Heat&#8217;s Caleb Martin were ejected in the third quarter on Saturday night after a scuffle broke out between the two.
Koloko and Martin both went up to grab a rebound off of a missed 3-point attempt when they came down twisted up with each other.
When Koloko hit the floor, Martin stood over him in an intimidating manner, and when Koloko bumped into Martin as he stood up, Martin tackled Koloko into the stands.
The fight led to players, coaches, and staff rushing in to break things up.

Koloko said afterward that he had no idea what led Martin to tackle him.
&#8220;He just stood there looking at me like crazy,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I just stood up. I don&#8217;t know.&#8221;
Martin claimed that there were &#8220;a lot of plays that were kind of leading up to it.&#8221;
&#8220;It was a chippy game. That&#8217;s typically how the game goes with Toronto,&#8221; Martin continued. &#8220;It&#8217;s a chippy back and forth. But ultimately I just think that emotions were high and the game was a close game. It was back and forth. Overall, I got to be more professional in the way I handle those type of situations.&#8221;
Miami ended up winning 112 to 109.
The NBA suspended Martin for one game, which ESPN noted would cost him nearly $45,000.
Koloko was fined $15,000, and Heat rookie Nikola Jovic was also suspended for leaving the bench during the incident.
&#8220;Miami Heat forward Caleb Martin has been suspended one game without pay for instigating an on-court altercation by taunting Toronto Raptors center Christian Koloko and then tackling him into the spectator stands, and Koloko has been fined $15,000 for grabbing Martin during the altercation,&#8221; the league said in a statement. &#8220;Heat forward Nikola Jovic has also been suspended one game without pay for leaving the bench area and entering the altercation. The incident, for which Martin and Koloko were each assessed one technical foul and ejected, began when the players became entangled while battling for rebounding position. The incident occurred with 7:46 remaining in the third quarter of the Heat’s 112-109 win over the Raptors at FTX Arena on Oct. 22.&#8221;
The league said Martin and Jovic would serve their one-game suspensions on Monday when the Heat tip off against the Raptors at FTX Arena.

Callihan offered a different take on the exchange in a response provided to the Daily Mail.
&#8220;It was for a transfer position at Martinsville. From my perspective, I was there. It was close. But you can&#8217;t give an inch for the transfer spot when there&#8217;s 95 cars and I had to take it. It was just hard racing. I do apologize to (Grady), but we&#8217;re fighting for our life out there so I just did what I had to do,&#8221; he <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/sportsnews/article-11246881/NASCAR-driver-goes-BERZERK-fellow-racer-wreck-Martinsville-Speedway.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.

Tom Hardy literally shocked opponents at a martial arts fighting competition in England when he secretly entered the Brazilian jiu-jitsu event and walked away winning the whole thing.
The 45-year-old actor didn&#8217;t enter the 2022 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Open Championship over the weekend using his stage name, but his real name, &#8220;Edward,&#8221; the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/sep/20/really-nice-guy-tom-hardy-surprises-competitors-with-entry-and-victory-in-martial-arts-contest">Guardian</a> reported.
No competitors knew he was the one they would be grappling with until they were face to face.
&#8220;I was shell-shocked,&#8221; competitor Danny Appleby shared. &#8220;[Hardy] said, &#8216;Just forget it&#8217;s me and do what you would normally do.'&#8221;
Appleby said Hardy is a &#8220;really strong guy,&#8221; which he found surprising given he&#8217;s a celebrity, the outlet noted.
&#8220;I&#8217;ve done about six tournaments and I&#8217;ve been on the podium in every one,&#8221; the athlete added. &#8220;But he&#8217;s probably the toughest competitor I&#8217;ve had – he certainly lived up to his Bane character, that&#8217;s for sure.&#8221;

Two kangaroos at the Mount Taylor Nature Reserve in Canberra, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/australia">Australia</a>, put on a fight worthy of a Pay-Per-View slot in a video captured by a passerby and posted to social media Thursday.
The kangaroos spun around while duking it out for a few seconds before one finally got the upper hand and shoved his opponent through a nearby fence. A loud crash is heard as the kangaroo flies through the metal fence, and the victor stands beside the destruction, staring at the gaping hole it created.

Neither of the kangaroos appeared to be hurt in the dustup. The kangaroo that was thrown through the fence was later seen hopping down the road perfectly fine, TMZ <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2022/08/25/kangaroo-fight-brawl-metal-fence/">reported</a>.
Kangaroos are known for their exceptional boxing skills. Males often fight for dominance and access to females, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCcLMNcWZOc&amp;t=45s">according</a> to BBC Earth. A young kangaroo will even begin practicing his fighting immediately after leaving his mother’s pouch.
The animals have also grappled with people. In June, Newsweek <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/man-fights-attacked-kangaroo-australia-1711987">reported</a> on a video showing an Australian man, Cliff Des, wrestling with a kangaroo after the creature came running after him. Des grabbed a stick off the ground to help fend off the attacking kangaroo before finally pinning it to the ground to calm it down.
Des explained to Australia’s “Today” show that he saw the six-foot kangaroo in the garden “trying to rip [his] little dogs out of the yard.”
&#8220;I went near it, about 30-foot away to try to shoo it away, but it didn&#8217;t want to go away,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I thought this guy means business, he was going to mongrel me if I didn&#8217;t, I took him to the ground.&#8221;
While Des eventually subdued the animal, the kangaroo bit his fingers and clawed his head and legs.

The United Airlines worker caught on video fighting with a passenger at Newark International Airport has been fired.
<a href="https://pix11.com/news/local-news/new-jersey/united-worker-fired-after-video-of-bloody-brawl-in-newark-airport-company-says/">PIX 11 New York</a> reported Tuesday that the employee, who had been involved in the brawl with former NFL player and current CFL wide receiver Brendan Langley, had been fired. The employee was reportedly a member of United Ground Express, the ground handling subsidiary of the airline. The video of the fight went viral on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-video-of-united-employee-being-beaten-up-at-newark-airport-goes-viral">Monday</a>.
“United Airlines does not tolerate violence of any kind at our airports or onboard our planes and we are working with local authorities in their investigation of this matter,&#8221; a spokesperson for United Airlines said in a statement Tuesday, via PIX 11. &#8220;United Ground Express informed us that the employee has been terminated.&#8221;
Langley was also suspended by the <a href="https://www.stampeders.com/2022/05/24/brendan-langley-suspended-indefinitely/">Calgary Stampeders</a> Tuesday. “The Stampeders take matters such as these very seriously,” said Stampeders President and General Manager John Hufnagel. “After learning details of the incident including the filing of a criminal charge, we are indefinitely suspending Brendan Langley.” The statement added that while on suspension, Langley is not permitted to enter the team facility or have any involvement with the team. He was signed to the team in February with expectations to try out during training camp.
Langley <a href="https://twitter.com/trllang/status/1528805451269283840?s=20&amp;t=DheJ1l6T_D4R2kafH_1kmg">defended himself</a> on Twitter Monday evening, blasting <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2022/05/23/united-airlines-worker-punches-passenger-fight-newark-airport/?adid=social-tw">TMZ</a>, which first reported the story, for spinning a narrative about the altercation without all the facts. &#8220;[It&#8217;s] crazy how u can get assaulted by an actual airline employee and defend urself, but media will run the narrative that they want to… this is the problem in our society today smh [don&#8217;t] believe everything u read!&#8221; Langley wrote. &#8220;@TMZ tbh this is s***** of yall. [Taking] another mans pain as a joke.&#8221;
Langley also <a href="https://twitter.com/trllang/status/1528806016850214912?s=20&amp;t=DheJ1l6T_D4R2kafH_1kmg">blamed</a> other United employees for not intervening to de-escalate the situation. &#8220;[You] can clearly see soooo many @united employees watching everything unfold while [I&#8217;m] basically begging for help. craziest part not one of them helped De-escalate the situation! it was like they wanted it to happen. like i had a target on my back.&#8221;
&#8220;[Every] angle shows me walking away from buddy, i had a whole ass flight that morning i did not want any smoke! he followed me all the way down to the kiosk just to cause me bodily harm. [I&#8217;m] honestly still shocked,&#8221; Langley <a href="https://twitter.com/trllang/status/1528807780991238144?s=20&amp;t=DheJ1l6T_D4R2kafH_1kmg">added</a>.
The fight broke out on May 19. In the <a href="https://twitter.com/barstoolsports/status/1528518303437795328?s=20&amp;t=ZJVy-Bqm89D7TDN_DSIr1Q">video</a>, both Langley and the United worker appear to square up against one another. Then, unexpectedly, the United worker slaps Langley across the face and shoves him. A woman in the background urges the two to stop fighting. &#8220;You saw that s***?&#8221; Langley shouts at a witness before punching the United worker in the face. The worker stumbles back into a luggage gate as Langley punches him again, causing him to tumble over the gate and onto a conveyor belt. The employee, visibly bloodied and with a large wound around his eye, gets up and approaches Langley again. Langley backs off and the two exchange words. &#8220;He works at the airport and he assaulted me,&#8221; Langley tells another employee who approaches the two. Witnesses told TMZ that the altercation stemmed from the fact that Langley used a wheelchair to tote his luggage instead of a luggage cart.

The second annual &#8220;Josh Fight&#8221; took place in Lincoln, Nebraska, over the weekend.
The event, which originated in 2020 as a tweet that went viral, raised more than $20,000 for the Children’s Hospital &amp; Medical Center in Omaha. More than 200 people, Joshes and non-Joshes alike, showed up to Bowling Lake Park in Lincoln at noon Saturday, armed with foam pool noodles, to battle for the honor of being named the &#8220;Number 1 Josh,&#8221; the Lincoln Journal Star reported.
“Lincoln, you’ve done it again,” event organizer Josh Swain said, via the <a href="https://journalstar.com/news/local/lincolns-josh-fight-sequel-determines-little-josh-will-keep-his-title/article_fc5afc6d-7e79-546d-aac1-7af5d35a085d.html">Lincoln Journal Star</a>. “The enthusiasm from everybody here was just incredible.&#8221; Swain, a native of Tucson, Arizona, organized the first Josh fight in 2021, after one of his social media posts went viral. The success of the first event prompted Swain to organize another event this year.
The title of &#8220;Number 1 Josh&#8221; was awarded to five-year old Josh Vinson, Jr., who also won the title during the first Josh Fight last year. Four-year-old Josh Folmar was the runner-up. Folmar secured his second-place spot in the battle wearing a &#8220;Captain Josh Sparrow&#8221; costume, the Journal Star reported. A number of other challengers wore costumes to do battle against their fellow Joshes. The event also featured a costume contest: Battle Creek, Nebraska, native Josh Rakowsky won, dressed as &#8220;The Real Josh Shady.&#8221;
“I think that&#8217;s amazing that they are able to take something that started off as some guy being bored texting … and then turned around and actually made something out of it,” said Tony Rupert, who attended last year&#8217;s event and returned to compete again this year. “It&#8217;s not something you hear about very often.”
In all, the event raised $20,576 for the Omaha Children&#8217;s Hospital. Swain also established a <a href="https://www.mightycause.com/story/Thejoshfight">fundraiser</a>, which will continue to collect donations through Monday. Fast food giant Burger King contributed $15,000, and California winery Josh Cellars said it would match the donations. Nicky McCarville, the hospital&#8217;s director of development, said that 75% of the proceeds would go toward the Charity Care program, which helps cover the costs for uninsured children. The other 25% would be donated to the <a href="http://joshuamemorial.org/">Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation</a>, a nonprofit charity dedicated to spreading awareness about accidental drowning and children&#8217;s water safety. The Foundation distributed gift baskets to winners of the contests, and its mascot, Josh the Otter, appeared to spread awareness about water safety.
“We’re just so grateful for the Lincoln community and people that have come from all over the country and out of state to support Josh [Swain],” McCarville told the Journal Star. “He&#8217;s an incredibly kind and generous person that came up with a really fun and creative event during kind of not-so-great times.”
Swain told the outlet that making Josh Fight an annual event is not a certainty, but he would like to keep holding it. “There&#8217;s a number of factors in this crazy world,” he said. “I think that the hope is to keep this trend going so that we can keep the good times rolling.”
Josh Fight began as a simple text message that went viral on Twitter. On April 24, 2020, Swain <a href="https://twitter.com/joshswainaz/status/1253728855459639297/photo/2">tweeted</a> screenshots of a Facebook messenger group chat with more than ten other individuals named Josh Swain. &#8220;[There] can be only one,&#8221; Swain captioned the photos. In the screencaps, Swain instructed the others to meet in a field in Lincoln exactly one year later to battle for the right to keep the name. The tweet went viral, and spawned the first event on April 24, 2021. The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hundreds-show-up-in-nebraska-for-pool-noodle-fight-over-the-name-josh">first Josh Fight</a> raised more than $8,000 for the Omaha Children&#8217;s Hospital, and participants donated 200 to 300 pounds of food for the Food Bank of Lincoln.
