A 15-year-old Oklahoma girl is in intensive care after downing Benadryl for a viral, re-emerging TikTok challenge.
Leah Presson participated in the “Benadryl Challenge,” which encourages teens to film themselves while downing toxic amounts of the allergy medication to <a href="https://drugfree.org/article/what-is-the-benadryl-challenge/">induce</a> hallucinations and delirium. After drinking the Benadryl, Presson experienced seizures and cardiac arrest, and after multiple tests at the hospital, she was found to have “no brain activity.” She remains in an intensive care unit at Integris Health Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City.
“I tell her to keep fighting and stay strong. You got this. You’re a fighter,” Leah’s father, Richard Presson, <a href="https://kfor.com/news/enid-father-warns-parents-of-social-media-challenge-after-daughter-is-hospitalized/">told</a> KFOR. 
Richard Presson initially believed his daughter’s seizures were from her history of asthma, but her symptoms were very similar to those caused by the “Benadryl Challenge.” He said she had participated in the dangerous trend before. 
“I don’t even want to think about a funeral because I feel like there’s still hope and everybody’s like, giving up too soon,” her father said. “I believe in miracles, that she’s definitely a miracle baby.”
Benadryl is an antihistamine used to temporarily relieve cold or allergy symptoms, such as runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes, hives, skin rash, and itching. An overdose of this medicine can be fatal or cause severe side effects. Diphenhydramine is the generic name for the antihistamine sold under the brand name Benadryl, meaning the two terms refer to the same medication.
Presson is not the first girl from Oklahoma to end the challenge with a devastating consequence. Earlier this year, 11-year-old Molly Miller died from a diphenhydramine-related overdose that was linked to the &#8220;Benadryl Challenge.&#8221; Three Connecticut children also died from Benadryl overdoses in recent months, The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-deadly-online-trend-parents-thought-was-gone-is-back?author=Jacob+Wheeler&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=19&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=The+Deadly+Online+Trend+Parents+Thought+Was+Gone+Is+Back">reported</a>. 
After the deaths of the three Connecticut children, the Connecticut Office of the Child Advocate <a href="https://portal.ct.gov/oca/-/media/oca/oca-recent-publications/oca-statement-diphenhydramine-and-safe-storage-2026-06-10.pdf?rev=1feb34995f34436cbb121d417264c506">warned</a> parents that the medication “is potentially dangerous to children of all ages.”
&#8220;We strongly encourage parents to store all medications safely, to ensure they are not easily accessible to children,&#8221; the office added. &#8220;We also want parents to know that resources are available if their children are experiencing mental health needs.&#8221;
The FDA <a href="https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-safety-and-availability/fda-warns-about-serious-problems-high-doses-allergy-medicine-diphenhydramine-benadryl">issued</a> a statement during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, when the challenge first emerged, warning the public about the dangers of overdosing on Benadryl and informing parents and health care professionals. 
“We are aware of news reports of teenagers ending up in emergency rooms or dying after participating in the ‘Benadryl Challenge’ encouraged in videos posted on the social media application TikTok,” the FDA said.
Now, searches for “Benadryl Challenge” or “Benadryl” on TikTok lead to a drug and alcohol warning. 
“I just want everybody to be aware of where they can educate their kids, but these challenges are just silly, and they need to be educated so it doesn’t happen again,” Presson’s father said.

Nara Organics baby formula was recalled from stores nationwide and online on Saturday after a multi-state outbreak of infant botulism.
Three infants ranging from 2-5 months old from California, Washington, and Pennsylvania became ill with botulism after they were fed Nara Organics Whole Milk Organic Infant Formula. The infants were hospitalized and treated with BabyBIG (Botulism Immune Globulin Intravenous), which is an IV medication created from the blood plasma of people immunized against botulism. There have been no deaths, the CDC <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2026/infant-botulism-outbreak-linked-to-powdered-infant-formula-june-2026.html">reported</a>.
Infant botulism occurs in babies under 1 year old who swallow Clostridium botulinum spores, which settle in the immature intestinal tract and produce botulinum neurotoxins. This leads to symptoms such as constipation, poor feeding, ptosis (drooping eyelid), sluggish pupils, low muscle tone, difficulty sucking and swallowing, weak or altered cry, generalized weakness, respiratory difficulty, and possibly respiratory arrest, <a href="https://www.fda.gov/safety/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts/nara-organics-recalls-all-lots-nara-infant-formula-because-possible-health-risk">according</a> to the FDA. Even though infant botulism is rare, it can be fatal.
“We believe in taking the strongest possible measure to protect the safety of babies. That’s why we quickly decided, in an abundance of caution, to voluntarily recall all Nara Organics infant formula currently available in the U.S.,” Nara Organics <a href="https://nara.com/pages/nara-organics-recall-information?srsltid=AfmBOoq0YgeNSd_YJ2MVk5K-oarj3G9Pxve9n4Wcs8Zped0KhzXsuAgj">said</a>. 
The CDC advised all parents who have any Nara Organics products to either return them or throw them away. It also told parents to take a picture of the lot code and use-by date, consider keeping any opened formula for state health department testing, and seek immediate medical attention if their baby develops symptoms. If no symptoms emerge after a month, parents can throw the leftover formula away.
As of June 13, no Nara Organics formula has tested positive for C. botulinum. 
This case <a href="https://www.fda.gov/food/outbreaks-foodborne-illness/outbreak-investigation-infant-botulism-infant-formula-november-2025?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery">follows</a> ByHeart’s Whole Nutrition Infant Formula recall in November 2025, when a botulism outbreak affected 48 babies from 17 different states after being fed the formula. As of June 10, 2026, last year&#8217;s recall is still in place, <a href="https://byheart.com/pages/important-recall-information?srsltid=AfmBOoq9kcbjfHOFy3cLa2AF9SkHROtLOc3A-zE4G6guFCOO46EyO589">according</a> to ByHeart&#8217;s recall information page.

The only problem? 
It turns out that the active ingredients in conventional sunscreen <a href="https://www.ewg.org/sunscreen/report/the-trouble-with-sunscreen-chemicals/">may cause a host of health problems</a> by disrupting natural hormonal systems. It’s why doctors advise <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/select/shopping/best-pregnancy-safe-sunscreens-rcna159322">pregnant women to avoid these products</a> and why many health-conscious consumers are looking for better options. Add to that the 2021 headlines when several major drugstore sunscreen lines were <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/healthy-aging-and-longevity/sunscreen-makers-withdraw-products-found-to-contain-cancer-causing-substance">pulled from shelves</a> due to the discovery that the products contained a carcinogen, and American consumers have plenty of reasons to be suspicious of many sunscreens on today’s market. 
The good news is that the Food and Drug Administration recently approved a new active ingredient for sunscreen. Bemotrizinol is the first addition to the list of approved sun-protecting options in decades. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. <a href="https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-expands-sunscreen-options-first-time-20-years">touted</a> the addition as a win for the Make America Healthy Again movement, citing bemotrizinol’s use in Europe — notorious for consumer protection laws — for decades. 
In fact, until now, there were only <a href="https://www.ewg.org/news-insights/news/2026/05/what-sunscreen-filter-bemotrizinol">two sun-protecting agents</a> that the FDA had enough data on to recognize as safe, with other “approved” ingredients in a gray area of consumer safety. While most sunscreens are chemical sunscreens and rely on these dubious active ingredients, the sunscreens designed as truly safe are mineral sunscreens. These more natural sunscreens rely on zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that sit on top of the skin to <a href="https://health.clevelandclinic.org/mineral-vs-chemical-sunscreen">block the sun’s UV rays</a> before they hit the skin’s surface, while chemical sunscreens soak into the skin to absorb UV rays. 
Similar to these mineral ingredients, bemotrizinol blocks the sun’s rays from the skin’s surface, with reportedly only <a href="https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredients/716991-Bemotrizinol/">minimal skin absorption</a>. The ingredient also has evidence to suggest that it’s effective at blocking both UVA and UVB rays, unlike many other sunscreens, and while UVB is the <a href="https://www.aad.org/media/stats-sunscreen">oft-cited</a> source of skin cancer, UVA rays can also <a href="https://www.ewg.org/news-insights/news/2026/05/what-sunscreen-filter-bemotrizinol">damage and age</a> the skin and penetrate deeper than UVB rays. 
Existing studies suggest that bemotrizinol is non-carcinogenic, does not cause reproductive harm, and does not irritate skin. Not to mention that Europe’s own use of the ingredient presents years of data on human use. However, it’s taken decades to get the FDA stamp of approval, largely because of government bureaucracy. Today, Europe has <a href="https://www.ewg.org/sunscreen/report/do-other-countries-have-better-sunscreens-than-the-u-s/">more than double</a> the number of approved sunscreen active ingredients as the U.S. And even as the MAHA movement works to cut through the red tape and corruption to make way for “gold star science,” it will take longer still for the U.S. market to catch up and new sunscreens to arrive for summer. 
But if you’re looking for a MAHA-approved option in the meantime, there are hundreds of mineral sunscreen options for <a href="https://www.ewg.org/sunscreen/best-sunscreens/best-moisturizers-with-spf/">everyday application</a> and <a href="https://www.ewg.org/sunscreen/best-sunscreens/best-beach-sport-sunscreens/">sport uses</a> for all skin types and even <a href="https://www.ewg.org/sunscreen/best-sunscreens/baby-kids-sunscreens/">extra-sensitive baby skin</a>. From tinted moisturizers, lip balms, and heavy-duty beach creams, there’s a MAHA-approved sunscreen for every occasion. 
Even in drugstores, <a href="https://www.walmart.com/ip/Banana-Boat-Sport-Mineral-Sunscreen-Lotion-Broad-Spectrum-SPF-50/15803300919?classType=REGULAR&amp;from=/search">many</a> <a href="https://www.walmart.com/ip/Sun-Bum-Baby-Bum-Mineral-Sunscreen-Lotion-SPF-50-Fragrance-Free-3-fl-oz/886577306?classType=REGULAR">popular</a> <a href="https://www.walmart.com/ip/CeraVe-Hydrating-Mineral-Sunscreen-SPF-50-Face-Lotion-for-Sensitive-Skin-Kids-Adults-2-5-oz/364585517">brands</a> offer a mineral option. These products are clearly labeled as “mineral” based, and reading the back label should reveal zinc oxide as the active ingredient blocking both UVA and UVB rays. Because these ingredients sit on top of the skin, the result can be a cakey application, or a ghostly appearance if used on tanned or darker skin, so it can take a little trial and error to find one that applies smoothly. But even for darker-skinned individuals, being mindful of sun exposure can <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/healthy-aging-and-longevity/the-science-of-sunscreen">help prevent the appearance of aging</a>, leading several brands to also sell <a href="https://www.amazon.com/CeraVe-Sunscreen-Hydrating-Mineral-Titanium/dp/B07YLKXV11/ref=sr_1_1?sr=8-1">tinted options</a> that more seamlessly blend into skin.
And just like conventional chemical sunscreen, mineral sunscreen is still worthless if not applied — and reapplied — appropriately. Dermatologists <a href="https://www.aad.org/media/stats-sunscreen">recommend</a> using at least SPF 30 once every two hours, after exiting water, or as recommended on the bottle. Applying an even layer and not skimping on coverage will create a protective barrier, especially if using an aerosolized product that can spray on <a href="https://med.stanford.edu/news/insights/2025/06/sunscreen-science.html">unevenly</a>.
All that said, sometimes the best prevention is simply avoidance. Sticking to the shade or wearing thin, breathable long sleeves or loose pants — alongside a <a href="https://www.amazon.com/FURTALK-Womens-Travel-Foldable-Summer/dp/B09QKQJMWP/ref=sr_1_6?sr=8-6&amp;psc=1">stylish sunhat</a> or a <a href="https://www.amazon.com/FURTALK-Fishing-Foldable-Outdoor-Hiking/dp/B0DSHKL8RZ/ref=sr_1_5?sr=8-5">fishing hat</a> — are easy ways to ditch the sunscreen woes poolside, on the porch, or on a summer hike.
Of course, the sun cannot be avoided at all times, and natural light is <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2290997/">key</a> for synthesizing vitamin D, regulating our wake-sleep cycles, and producing serotonin. But as one of my fairer-skinned family members discovered as an adult, sunburn from decades ago can cause skin cancer later in life that has to be painfully cut out. So, this year, I’m joining him in catching a few rays before heading into the shade to enjoy the summer heat from beneath the brim of a sunhat — while I wait for the latest in UV protection to hit the market.

The Question Every Parent Should Ask Before Buying Sunscreen

Abortion pills can be obtained &#8220;as quickly as an Amazon transaction&#8221; thanks to a massive network of foreign and domestic pill sellers that routinely flout federal law.
A <a href="https://www.scribd.com/document/1043490291/An-Overview-of-Online-Abortion-Drug-Access-in-Post-Dobbs-America-ARS-42?_gl=1*1kyfs09*_up*MQ..*_ga*MTg2MzY1OTg1Mi4xNzc5ODAwOTUy*_ga_Z4ZC50DED6*czE3Nzk4MDA5NTEkbzEkZzAkdDE3Nzk4MDA5NTEkajYwJGwwJGgw*_ga_8KZ8BV0P5W*czE3Nzk4MDA5NTEkbzEkZzAkdDE3Nzk4MDA5NTEkajYwJGwwJGgw">new study</a> from the Charlotte Lozier Institute, first shared with The Daily Wire, found the distribution of abortion pills largely “uncontrolled” and available across the country despite pro-life laws. The study noted that the majority of abortion pill sellers ignore FDA regulations and identified at least eight online pill providers that use so-called shield laws to ship pills into states where medication abortion is technically illegal. 
Researcher Mia Steupert found that an “increase in the proliferation of foreign and domestic online providers of abortion drugs&#8221; and &#8220;the enactment of shield laws all contributed to a post-Dobbs landscape where abortion drugs are readily available on all corners of the internet to women in all 50 states and D.C.”
The Charlotte Lozier Institute is the research arm of the Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America organization. 
The release of the study comes as pro-life groups have put pressure on the Trump administration to reverse Biden-era regulations that allowed abortion pills to be sent to women without in-person doctor visits. The Supreme Court ruled earlier this month to allow mail-order abortions to continue as the FDA faces lawsuits over the removal of the in-person requirement. The FDA says it is conducting a safety review of the deadly drug. 
“The Joe Biden rule stripping away in-person doctor visits allows the online abortion drug industry to send mifepristone to kill unborn children far beyond the 10-week timeframe the FDA has established — putting women at increased risk for life-threatening complications,” SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser told The Daily Wire. 
“Anyone can get these drugs with a few taps on their phone. You don’t have to prove how far along you are, that you’re pregnant, or even that you’re a woman to obtain these drugs,” she added.

Shield laws have been adopted in Democrat-controlled states like New York and Massachusetts, which state officials say gives people who ship illegal abortion pills into states like Tennessee or Texas immunity from prosecution. Pro-life advocates have argued that shield laws effectively nullify states that have prohibited doctors from administering medication abortions.  
Domestic groups operating under shield laws include the Massachusetts Medication Abortion Access Project, We Take Care of Us, Aid Access, and several others, <a href="https://lozierinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/American-Reports-42-Appendices.pdf">according</a> to the study, which includes an appendix listing dozens of online pill sellers.

One reviewer wrote on the We Take Care of Us <a href="https://www.wetakecareof.us/">website</a> said she came from “a state where abortion is not allowed,” while another referred to getting the abortion pill, which ends the life of an unborn child, as “literally a life safer [sic].”
“There are no laws directly criminalizing the ingestion of abortion pills in any state, however there can be legal risk associated with abortion care,” the We Take Care of Us website <a href="https://www.wetakecareof.us/faqs">says</a>. 
We Take Care of Us will send women abortion pills “in advance” before they become pregnant.

Aid Access <a href="https://aidaccess.org/en/about-us">says</a> it provides abortion pills &#8220;to people in all 50 states&#8221; and boasts it has facilitated the deaths of over 200,000 unborn babies.
Multiple foreign pill providers were also scrutinized in the study. 
“These are typically foreign websites that allow anyone to buy abortion drugs, oftentimes as quickly as an Amazon transaction,” Steupert wrote. “These e-commerce websites obtain abortion drugs from international manufacturers and then either ship the drugs directly to the customer or to a U.S. middleman who mails them around the country.”
The study identified Telefem Mexico, Abortion Pills in Private, and Women on Web as three of the organizations that sell pills to Americans. Pills purchased from <a href="https://telefem.org/en/frequent-questions/">Telefem Mexico</a> are picked up on the Mexico side of the southern border, while the other two websites purport to ship pills into the United States. 
Abortions Pills in Private is based in a business park in the United Arab Emirates that says it ships to “anywhere” in the United States. In a drop-down menu, visitors can select from a variety of states with the strongest pro-life protections, including Tennessee. 
The pill provider says that it offers “confidential, medically reviewed services that ships abortion pill kits discreetly to addresses across Tennessee.” 
Women on the Web <a href="https://www.womenonweb.org/en/order-abortion-pill-online/usa/">says</a> that it provides abortion pills “in all 50 states, supporting pregnancies up to 14 weeks.”

The pill seller describes itself as a “Canadian feminist non-profit organization” and brags that it has facilitated the deaths of more than 130,000 unborn babies. 
Of the foreign pill sellers scrutinized in the study, 18 did not require any kind of ID, and 17 shipped abortion drugs not approved by the FDA, the study found.
Even if the providers do not purport to send pills into states with pro-life protections, most appear to completely ignore FDA regulations. The study also found that 81% of online pill sellers do not follow the FDA restrictions for abortion, including that the pill be taken within ten weeks of conception. 
“Of online abortion drug sellers within the formal U.S. healthcare system that publicly report the gestational age at which they will ship abortion drugs, only 19% complied with the FDA’s requirement to not ship the drugs after 70 days’ gestation. This means 64 sellers violated the FDA’s safety limit,” Steupert wrote. 
Additionally, the majority of pill providers also do not follow the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy requirements outlined by the FDA for the abortion drug. These requirements include things like prescriber and dispenser guidelines. 
Back in 2019, the FDA sent a letter to 28 online pill sellers who were accused of violating abortion pill regulations. Steupert said that 10 of these pill sellers were still violating federal regulations despite the warning. 
“Of the 28 websites implicated in the FDA’s 2019 abuse letters, 10 are still actively breaking U.S. federal law by selling unapproved and unbranded abortion drugs they claim are FDA-approved,” she wrote.  
The report identified sites like <a href="https://www.abortionrx.com/contact.html">Abortionrx</a> and <a href="https://www.nopregnancy.com/contact.html">Nopregnancy</a> as two of the websites that were ignoring the FDA’s warnings. Both pill sellers have alleged &#8220;FDA approved&#8221; stamps on the bottom of their webpages.

On the world stage, President Donald Trump has long emphasized negotiating from a position of strength. He applied that same approach domestically with the creation of TrumpRx — a platform intended to give consumers, particularly those without prescription drug insurance, access to safe, effective, FDA-approved medications at reduced prices. By bringing major pharmaceutical companies to the table, Trump sought to leverage scale and pressure to deliver lower costs. The program bears his name, signaling that it is not incidental but central to his healthcare agenda.
Yet actions — or more precisely, inaction — by the previous FDA commissioner undermined that effort.
One of the fastest-growing segments of the pharmaceutical market is GLP-1 weight-loss drugs. These treatments are transforming the lives of many Americans struggling with obesity, offering not just cosmetic benefits but meaningful improvements in long-term health. Even with prices coming down, many Americans without insurance coverage — or whose plans exclude weight-loss drugs — still struggle to afford them. In that environment, TrumpRx should be a natural destination for consumers seeking affordable, legitimate options.
Some consumers have turned to it. But for many, the promise of TrumpRx is being undermined by a parallel market offering similar-looking products at even lower prices.
Why?
Because drug compounders have aggressively filled the gap, offering unapproved knock-off GLP-1 products at dramatically lower prices. These products are often marketed through polished, highly targeted advertising — frequently aimed at younger, vulnerable consumers — and are priced well below what even TrumpRx can offer. The problem, as experts report, is that many of these compounded drugs rely on questionable or unsafe active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), often sourced from overseas.
At best, these knock-offs are ineffective. At worst, they pose serious health risks. Attorneys general across multiple states have warned of potential harm, including severe adverse reactions requiring medical intervention.
The agency tasked with protecting consumers in this space is the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Former FDA Commissioner Marty Makary talked a big game on this issue, declaring on social media that the FDA &#8220;will take swift action against companies mass-marketing illegal copycat drugs&#8221; and warning that &#8220;it&#8217;s a new era&#8221; of enforcement against misleading direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical advertising. The agency has issued more than 50 warning letters to telehealth firms over the past year, established a &#8220;Green List&#8221; of vetted API suppliers, and on April 30, 2026, formally proposed to exclude semaglutide, tirzepatide, and liraglutide from the 503B bulks list — a step that, if finalized, I’m told would shut the door on most large-scale compounding of these drugs.
But Makary&#8217;s pace and reach of enforcement have not yet matched the rhetoric. A parallel market for unsafe knock-offs continues to flourish in plain sight, and the gap between what the commissioner promised and what is actually happening on the ground is the problem.
Consider the FDA&#8217;s &#8220;Green List&#8221; of API suppliers. In theory, this list is meant to identify trusted sources whose products can move more easily through customs. In practice, key allies point to FOIA-released inspection records of suppliers believed to be on the list that reveal troubling deficiencies — foreign residue on equipment marked &#8220;clean,&#8221; canvas glove pieces left behind in clean rooms, rainwater in storage areas, water leaks in microbiology labs, and live and dead insects in places they should never appear. The fact that a significant portion of these suppliers are based in China — a country whose loosely regulated chemical industry is also the world&#8217;s primary source of fentanyl precursors trafficked into North America — raises additional concerns about quality control and oversight. Compounding at scale is supposed to be permitted only during shortages of approved drugs. That condition once applied to GLP-1 medications, when demand initially surged. But authorities note that the FDA resolved the tirzepatide shortage in December 2024 and the semaglutide shortage in February 2025. The legal basis for mass compounding has evaporated.
Even if the &#8220;Green List&#8221; functioned as intended — which current evidence suggests it does not — the compounding process itself introduces additional risks. The FDA has documented hundreds of adverse event reports tied to compounded GLP-1s, including dosing errors leading to hospitalization and the use of unapproved formulations such as the salt forms semaglutide sodium and semaglutide acetate, which have never been shown to be safe or effective.
Despite this, large-scale compounding continues. And there is no need for it, because safe alternatives are now widely available.
TrumpRx has secured substantial price reductions. Injectable GLP-1s that once listed at roughly $1,000 to $1,350 per month are now available on the platform at an average of about $350 — and as little as $199 for the lowest dose. Oral formulations start at $149 per month. These are meaningful gains. But their impact is undercut when compounded alternatives — often lacking the same rigorous FDA oversight, quality controls, and consistency — are available at even lower prices despite materially higher safety risks.
For seniors, obesity care is very important. In a national survey conducted by the Obesity Care Advocacy Network, 74% of medically eligible older Americans identified GLP-1 coverage as a top-tier health priority. One-third of all respondents said obesity care is a primary benchmark in evaluating whether a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan is high quality.
An outdated provision in the law establishing Medicare Part D excludes coverage of weight-loss medications. Frustrated by the pace of congressional action to repeal this restriction, President Trump has made access to legitimate, FDA-approved GLP-1s more affordable right now. The administration created a temporary Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program, effective July 1, 2026, that allows eligible Medicare beneficiaries to obtain GLP-1s with a simple $50 monthly copay.
Each consumer who chooses an unapproved compounded product over an FDA-approved drug available through TrumpRx or the Medicare Bridge represents a failure of the federal government and the program. The administration is expanding access to safe, affordable therapies, including GLP-1s, while another arm of the federal government — the FDA — was continuing to permit a sometimes lower-cost but demonstrably higher-risk parallel market to persist, one in which product variability, dosing inconsistencies, and sterility concerns can pose real dangers to patients.
TrumpRx and the Medicare Bridge for GLP-1s were designed to give Americans access to safe, effective medications at reasonable prices. Expanding access to treatments like GLP-1s has broader public health implications, including reducing the long-term costs of obesity-related conditions for programs like Medicare and Medicaid. That is a meaningful achievement.
But these programs cannot deliver on their promise if Americans continue to be drawn toward cheaper, riskier alternatives that the federal government has the authority — and the duty — to shut down. The previous FDA administrator’s regulatory gaps and inconsistent enforcement are allowing unsafe alternatives to compete directly with a program designed to provide safer ones.
President Trump was right to fire Marty Makary on this failure alone. I implore him to ensure that his next FDA administrator gets this issue right and gives TrumpRX the tools it needs to succeed.

The resignation of FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary creates an opportunity for the agency to return to its mission of protecting the public by ensuring drugs are safe. Whether Kyle Diamantas is running the agency long-term or the administration expediently appoints someone new, now is the time to address the most significant public health crisis of our time: the widespread distribution of mail-order abortion drugs.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Biden administration recklessly stripped away basic requirements for the abortion drug mifepristone, such as in-person doctor&#8217;s visits. The intention was to expand abortion nationwide if Roe v. Wade was overturned. This mail-order policy has pushed abortion drugs into pro-life states, violating their laws, ending lives, and endangering women and girls. And it’s still in place.
This Biden policy is the reason abortions have risen, not fallen, in the post-Dobbs era, with more than <a href="https://lozierinstitute.org/new-report-confirms-abortions-continue-to-rise-after-dobbs/">one million</a> unborn children dying annually. Even in states with strong pro-life protections, tens of thousands of abortions persist each year, driven in large part by this unchecked spread of mail-order abortion drugs. We know 90,000 abortions are occurring annually just in the states that protect life all throughout pregnancy.
Mifepristone is manufactured and distributed to kill unborn children, but it is also highly dangerous for women. In September, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. confirmed that the Biden administration <a href="https://x.com/sbaprolife/status/1963633771908874327">&#8220;twisted&#8221;</a> data on abortion drug safety and there would be a necessary review. Studies indicate that even when these drugs are given in person with oversight, as many as <a href="https://eppc.org/publication/insurance-data-reveals-one-in-ten-patients-experiences-a-serious-adverse-event/">11%</a> of women who take these drugs experience serious adverse effects, including hemorrhaging, infection, and sepsis. Peer-reviewed research further shows that roughly <a href="https://aditum.org/journals/international-journal-of-epidemiology-and-public-health-research/current-issue/1111">three-quarters</a> of emergency room visits following abortion drug use are classified as severe or critical. According to the <a href="https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2023/020687Orig1s026lbl.pdf">FDA’s own label</a>, abortion drugs send approximately one in 25 women to the ER.
This policy shift has also created fertile ground for abuse. Without in-person screening, there is little to prevent <a href="https://www.wsj.com/opinion/mifepristone-as-a-tool-of-coercion-a00edf87">coercion</a> or forced abortions. Cases like that of <a href="https://adflegal.org/article/rosalie-markezich-story/">Rosalie Markezich</a> – whose boyfriend allegedly ordered abortion drugs online from California and pressured her to take them against her will – highlight a disturbing reality. When you peddle drugs online to anyone, vulnerable women and their children are left exposed to manipulation, violence, and irreversible harm.
Thankfully, Republican attorneys general have challenged the Biden policy, with one case brought by Louisiana rising to the top. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals recently moved to halt the FDA’s mail-order abortion drug policy, signaling that challenges to this regulatory framework have substantial merit. The court called the Biden policy “federal interference” that nullifies Louisiana’s pro-life law and said the policy “lacked a basis in data and scientific literature.” The court said, “FDA’s own documents prove that emergency room care is statistically certain in hundreds of thousands of cases.”
Looking ahead, the path forward is clear. It is time for the FDA to return to the standard of in-person doctor visits that was in place during the first Trump administration and to fully study mifepristone. While it is my hope that mifepristone will be completely taken off the market someday, going back to basic safety standards will allow pro-life laws to take effect and add a critical layer of protection for women. Face-to-face evaluations allow for screening of ectopic pregnancies, to assess gestational age, to identify risk factors, and to detect signs of coercion.
Public opinion strongly supports this approach. <a href="https://sbaprolife.org/polling#abortion-drugs">Polling</a> consistently shows that 71% of Americans – including majorities of Independents, Democrats, and even self-identified liberals – favor reinstating in-person medical oversight for abortion drugs.
Now is the time for the FDA to do the right – and the politically smart – thing. Return to the Trump administration policy of in-person doctor visits to save lives.

WASHINGTON—Embattled FDA Commissioner Marty Makary resigned Tuesday, marking a major shakeup at the health agency following a reported pressure campaign to remove him for slow walking MAHA and pro-life initiatives.
Makary ultimately called it quits over President Donald Trump&#8217;s push to authorize fruit-flavored e-cigarettes, an action he opposed, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/05/12/us/politics/trump-fires-fda-commissioner-makary.html?smtyp=cur&amp;smid=tw-nytimes">according to the New York Times</a>. But vapes may have been the last straw for Makary, who has faced growing criticism from pro-life advocates over the FDA’s handling of mifepristone and the speed of the agency’s review of the abortion drug’s safety. The U.S. Supreme Court is currently weighing whether to allow restrictions on mail-order access to the abortion drug. 
President Trump, speaking to reporters before departing for China, declined to say whether he had resigned or been fired.
&#8220;Everybody wants that job. It&#8217;s a very important job, Marty is a terrific guy,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;He was having some difficulties; he&#8217;s a great doctor, and he was having some difficulties. But he&#8217;s going to go on, and he&#8217;s going to do well.&#8221;

Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) celebrated Makary’s resignation, calling him “uniquely destructive to the pro-life movement.
“He attempted to place pro-abortion lawyers in key positions. He slow-walked a vitally necessary review of the abortion drug mifepristone,” <a href="https://x.com/HawleyMO/status/2054249500680806518?s=20">Hawley said.</a> “He used his discretion to approve a new abortion drug when the data shows it sends 1 in 10 women to the emergency room. He froze out pro-life leaders and repeatedly stonewalled Congress. His resignation is an opportunity for the FDA to reset.” 
FDA Deputy ‌Commissioner ⁠Kyle Diamantas will lead the agency in an acting capacity, <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2026/05/12/makary-fda-resign-white-house-00916014">according to Politico. </a>
Makary&#8217;s resignation comes after several media outlets reported that President Trump signed off on a plan to fire Makary amid agency turmoil and backlash from anti-abortion advocates. His departure follows months of mounting criticism from Democrats over vaccine policy and from pro-life advocates frustrated with the agency’s handling of mifepristone regulations.
Makary had defended the FDA’s approach, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/exclusive-fda-commissioner-marty-makary-says-hes-taking-politics-out-of-science">telling The Daily Wire</a> the agency was conducting a detailed safety review of the abortion drug and that any next steps would be guided by that study.
&#8220;We have brought back gold standard science and taken politics out of the process,” Makary told The Daily Wire in an exclusive interview last week. “We’ve been going hard on what’s right. Be it the COVID vaccine, be it getting back to basic science — gold-standard science … We are going up against Big Food, Big Pharma, and we aren’t afraid to stand up to them.”
SBA Pro-Life America led the charge, calling for the termination of Makary.
“Indifference is completely unacceptable to millions of pro-life voters expecting the administration to act to save lives. Abortions are up, not down, after Dobbs, with at least 1.1 million deaths a year,” <a href="https://sbaprolife.org/newsroom/press-releases/sba-pro-life-america-intensifies-call-to-fire-makary">the group said in a statement</a>. 
“This is a five-alarm crisis for the pro-life movement and for the GOP,” the group added. “The GOP cannot win without its base and simply will not get the enthusiasm that drives turnout without leadership from the top.”
Conservative commentator Katie Pavlich said she was “sad” to see Makary leave the FDA. 
“He is a good man and was a desperately need[ed]  voice of logic, reason, courage and ethics during COVID panic. He never caved to mandate pressure, even putting his job on the line at Johns Hopkins,” <a href="https://x.com/KatiePavlich/status/2054253971951251703?s=20">she said on social media</a>.
Makary, <a href="https://www.fda.gov/about-fda/fda-organization/martin-makary">a longtime surgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital</a> and outspoken critic of the politicization of medicine during the COVID era, is the latest official to exit the Trump administration. Since January, former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, former Attorney General Pam Bondi, and former Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer have left their roles.

Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Martin Makary says his agency is working hard to bring back &#8220;gold standard science&#8221; while Americans&#8217; trust in science and medicine is at historic lows.

Makary has drawn criticism from both sides of the aisle during his 14 months as FDA Commissioner. <a href="https://democrats-energycommerce.house.gov/media/press-releases/ec-democrats-demand-answers-fdas-covid-vaccine-memo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Democrats</a> have criticized his vaccine policies, while pro-life groups have called for his resignation over what they say is inaction on Biden-era abortion pill regulations. Asked about safety concerns surrounding the abortion drug mifepristone, Makary told The Daily Wire the FDA is committed to addressing these concerns and that a study on the drug&#8217;s safety is underway.
&#8220;There needs to be a good, detailed granular study for mifepristone, which to date has not been done. We have committed to conducting a granular study,&#8221; Makary told The Daily Wire. &#8220;We&#8217;re doing it the right way, and that study will inform any potential next steps.&#8221;
But <a href="https://www.fda.gov/about-fda/fda-organization/martin-makary" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Makary</a> has experience swimming through the turbulent waters of public opinion. A pioneering surgeon at Johns Hopkins University, Makary is the author of more than 300 peer-reviewed medical journal articles and was one of the few scientists calling out the politicization of science during the COVID pandemic.
Under Makary, the FDA is on a mission to make American children healthier, find new treatments for diseases, and regain America&#8217;s place as a world leader in scientific breakthroughs.
&#8220;When I came into office 14 months ago, the year prior, China was doing four times the number of phase one trials as the United States,&#8221; Makary said. &#8220;In the first Trump administration, the U.S. was the leader, and that changed under the Biden administration. We walked into a mess.&#8221;
Makary says the agency is achieving its mission in record time. Within weeks of his March 2025 Senate confirmation, the FDA and the Department of Health and Human Services announced an initiative to phase out petroleum-based food dyes, something Makary says the FDA talked about doing for decades.
&#8220;We announced action to remove all nine artificial dyes from the U.S. food supply,&#8221; Makary told The Daily Wire. &#8220;A lot of companies are ahead of schedule. It is a tremendous success. These are petroleum-based artificial dyes. American kids don&#8217;t need more petroleum in their bodies.&#8221;
In the past 14 months, the FDA has also taken steps to <a href="https://www.hhs.gov/press-room/wtas-fda-announces-major-steps-implement-real-time-clinical-trials.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">modernize</a> and increase the efficiency of drug applications and trials. The FDA launched the Commissioner&#8217;s National Priority Voucher program, which <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzMG6_hOB5w" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reduces wait times</a> for drug applications and allows therapies for rare diseases to forgo randomized trials, which are <a href="https://www.hhs.gov/press-room/wtas-fda-launches-framework-accelerating-therapies-ultra-rare-diseases.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">difficult</a> to conduct due to small patient populations.
&#8220;We introduced a new pathway to approve drugs at the speed patients would demand if they&#8217;re suffering from a terminal or debilitating condition,&#8221; Makary said. &#8220;Typically, the FDA takes a year to review and file a drug application. We have that down now to one to two months, regularly.&#8221;
The Daily Wire asked Makary about criticisms he&#8217;s faced over the FDA&#8217;s rejection of several drug applications, including those for cancer treatments. Patient groups say Makary&#8217;s FDA is <a href="https://www.wsj.com/opinion/president-trumps-marty-makary-problem-08ebd71a">slow-walking</a> rare disease drugs, making companies jump through unnecessary hoops in order to get approval for things like Huntington&#8217;s Disease.
But Makary says it&#8217;s simply a matter of good science.
&#8220;There&#8217;s a very simple system at the FDA: if the drug works, it gets approved,&#8221; Makary told The Daily Wire.
In an effort to regain the public trust in science and medicine, the FDA is giving the public unprecedented transparency of the drug application process.
&#8220;If the drug fails in its trial and the FDA does not approve it, in my opinion, the public deserves to know why. So we have taken the bold step of making our decision letters public information.&#8221;
The FDA has posted the complete response letters of approved and non-approved new drug applications on its<a href="https://open.fda.gov/apis/transparency/completeresponseletters/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> website</a>.
&#8220;In the past, politics has resulted in overruling scientists at the agency. But in this Trump administration, we stand by our scientists,&#8221; Makary told The Daily Wire.
&#8220;Every time the commissioner has overruled scientists at the FDA, it&#8217;s been a fiasco. The Biden administration overruled scientists who recommended against approving the Covid vaccine for healthy children. It was a fiasco.&#8221;
The FDA is also taking bold steps to improve the quality of school lunches and baby formula.
After hearing from parents wanting better quality food in schools, the FDA launched a <a href="https://x.com/DrMakaryFDA/status/2045249715642495124?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pilot</a> program giving schools resources to provide healthier meals to students. The program has been hugely successful, showing a 70 to 80% reduction in pesticides and 80% to 90% reduction in heavy metals contained in school lunches, Makary told The Daily Wire.
&#8220;We proved that you can make a switch to healthier food in an affordable way,&#8221; Makary said.
On April 29, the FDA released results of the <a href="https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-releases-results-largest-ever-testing-infant-formula-us" target="_blank" rel="noopener">largest-ever testing</a> of infant formula in the United States, testing more than 300 infant formula samples for contaminants such as mercury, lead, and forever chemicals like PFAS. The testing found the samples overwhelmingly had undetectable or very low levels of contaminants, which Makary called a &#8220;resounding success.&#8221;
&#8220;Many companies find it too hard to bring new products to market because you have to follow a rigid recipe,&#8221; Makary said. &#8220;So we are modernizing the monograph that&#8217;ll enable more companies to come to market, that will both lower prices and create more options for moms that are healthier, while at the same time, make the supply chain more resilient.&#8221;
In the midst of swirling public opinion, Makary remains focused on the FDA&#8217;s mission to promote strong science and healthier Americans.
&#8220;We set the priority of the agency to a simple mission of more cures, meaningful treatments, and healthier food for children.&#8221;

Most Americans, including Democrats and independents, want to change a federal government policy allowing abortion pills to be mailed with impunity throughout the United States, according to polling obtained by The Daily Wire. 
Over two-thirds (67%) of Americans surveyed said they would support the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reinstating an in-person doctor visit requirement for accessing an abortion pill via the mail, polling for the 85 Fund conducted by CRC Research showed. That included 72% of Republicans, 68% of independents, and 63% of Democrats. About 27% of Americans opposed reinstating the in-person requirement. 
Pro-life leaders, who have blamed the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/despite-dobbs-more-babies-are-still-being-aborted-in-the-united-states">increasing abortion rates</a> across the country on mail-order abortions, touted the polling as a reason for the FDA to revoke the Biden-era policy allowing pills to be shipped without a doctor’s visit. 
“It&#8217;s overwhelmingly clear that Americans support reinstating the in-person dispensing requirement to protect women taking mifepristone,” Christina Francis, the CEO of the American Association of Pro-Life OBGYNs, told The Daily Wire. “As physicians caring for women and babies every day, we see the devastating impact that the FDA&#8217;s relaxed standards are having on women&#8217;s health and safety.”

The polling was conducted from March 12-18 and sampled 1600 likely voters randomly selected from opt-in panel participants. Those surveyed were 33% Republican, 34% independent, and 32% of Democrats, with 31% identifying as pro-life, 39% as pro-choice, and 27% as somewhere in between.
Seventy percent of those surveyed also said they would support the FDA making an in-person medical evaluation required before and after taking an abortion pill, while 62% said they were more likely to support an in-person requirement after learning that some men were coercing women into having abortions. Nearly half of Americans (49%) said they would be less likely to support their representative if they supported abortion pills being shipped without a medical evaluation.

The Trump administration has promised to conduct a safety study of the abortion drug, but pro-life advocates have grown impatient. They say the allowance of mail-order abortion pills allows women and leftist activists to ship pills into states where medication abortion is technically illegal. The FDA has said that reimposing the in-person requirement would interfere with the ongoing safety study. 
A Georgia woman was recently charged after investigators said she took eight abortion pills before her baby was delivered alive and survived for about an hour. &#8220;I know my infant is suffering, because I am the one who did the abortion. I want her to die,&#8221; the woman allegedly told nurses at the hospital.
Tens of thousands of abortions have been carried out in states like Texas and Tennessee with pills shipped in by activists and abortion doctors. Pro-life groups say the FDA policy allowing pills to be shipped without the in-person requirement effectively nullifies state laws.
States like Louisiana <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/blatantly-unlawful-red-state-challenges-fda-over-mail-order-abortions">have sued</a> the FDA to reverse the mail-order regulations. That lawsuit was joined by a woman named Rosalie Markezich, a woman who says her ex-boyfriend ordered illegal abortion pills from California and then coerced her to take them to end the life of her unborn child.
“Voters could not be speaking any more clearly on abortion drugs flooding the mail, driving up abortion rates and undermining protections for women and children,” Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser told The Daily Wire. “They recognize this is an urgent public health and safety crisis that demands a return to common sense, like in-person doctor visits that were required under the first Trump administration.” 
Previous polling has found similar results, including one from Cygnal that found large majorities of Republican primary voters said they would be less enthusiastic to vote in the midterm elections if GOP leaders shy away from pro-life policies
&#8220;A broad consensus exists around the dangers of mail-order abortion drugs and the risks they pose to women’s health and safety,” said David Bereit, the executive director of the Life Leadership Conference. “A majority of Americans, across the political spectrum, express serious concern that eliminating in-person medical oversight increases the likelihood of complications, coercion, and undetected abuse.”

When the Supreme Court finally overturned Roe v. Wade — reversing the worst Supreme Court decision since Dred Scott — pro-life Americans rejoiced. Little did we know the fight was only just beginning. Since then, abortion advocates have dumped millions of dollars in dark money into our states to overturn state laws, and in some cases, state constitutional provisions, protecting life. They’ve relentlessly pushed for pro-abortion judges for state courts and the federal judiciary. But above all, they’ve turned to a drug called mifepristone to bring abortion on demand to every state in the union. If pro-lifers want to protect the innocent unborn, and the health and safety of women, there’s only one thing to do: ban the chemical abortion drug.
Mifepristone first came to market in the United States in 2000, courtesy of the Clinton administration. From the beginning, it was mired in controversy. The drug was a copycat of the infamous French RU-486, which works by essentially inducing a miscarriage. This isn’t contraception. It’s not the morning-after pill. It’s a full-on abortion: the drug’s purpose is to destroy a viable pregnancy.
It was controversial because the drug carries so many side effects. It doesn’t merely kill the baby. It can also cause internal hemorrhaging, infections, sepsis, and other life-threatening conditions in the mother.
The pharma company that introduced it in the United States knew that, and took unusual and extreme measures to protect itself from liability. The name of the company is Danco. It was incorporated in the Cayman Islands. Its board of directors is secret; its investors are secret. Its corporate structure is largely shielded from public view. We do know early backers included George Soros — surprise, surprise — and other far-left activists who loudly backed population control. Their goal was simple: to put a Planned Parenthood in every mailbox in America, by developing a drug that could be shipped anywhere and cause an abortion anytime.
The Clinton administration was also aware of mifepristone’s dangers, and its FDA approval came with significant restrictions. The drug had to be prescribed by a physician. That physician had to see the patient before prescribing it, dispense the drug in person, and conduct a follow-up assessment. The FDA was also required to keep track of major health events associated with the drug and report them. The agency even slapped a “black box” warning on mifepristone’s label, meant to alert women that the drug came with serious risks.
Over time, however, one liberal administration after another removed these safeguards. 
The Obama administration dropped many of the reporting requirements and allowed non-physicians to prescribe the drug. Obama’s FDA also discarded the required follow-up visit. 
The Biden administration went further and eliminated the in-person dispensing requirement altogether.
The result? Today, mifepristone can be ordered over the internet from anywhere in the world — many of the most trafficked websites are in India — and mailed to any address in the United States. No meaningful safety protocols remain to protect women’s health or even police the integrity of the drug itself.
And what you might have expected to happen has happened. The largest study of mifepristone ever conducted found that in nearly 11% of cases, women who take the drug experience a “serious adverse health event” such as sepsis or hemorrhaging. That’s more than one in ten women. Incredibly, this rate is 22 times higher than what drug maker Danco admits to on its label.
Mifepristone’s ubiquity has also led to other horrors. Women across this country have been pressured into taking it by pro-abortion groups like Planned Parenthood, who routinely lie about the effects. And abusive partners — able to order the drug with a simple click — have intimidated or coerced women into taking it and killing babies they wanted to keep.
But of course, Danco doesn’t care: it’s making billions. Business is so lucrative, in fact, that mifepristone is the only drug the company makes. One recent piece of public reporting suggested investors’ returns top 450% — even as one in ten women who take the drug face health devastation. What has Danco done to compensate them? Nothing. They’re too busy raking in the cash.
And the far-left abortion crazies who funded Danco and worked for years to eliminate every last safety restriction, have gotten what they wanted, too. Mifepristone now accounts for 70% of abortions in the United States — a proportion that goes up every year. It is truly abortion on demand. And no matter what voters in the states decide, the number of abortions continues to grow: the drug is available by mail anywhere, irrespective of state laws.
Those harmed are women. And the innocent unborn. At least 7.5 million women have taken mifepristone since the year 2000. That means hundreds of thousands of women are sent to emergency rooms or left to cope with life-threatening conditions on their own. And millions of babies lost.
It is time for Congress to act. The last twenty years have made abundantly clear that this drug is inherently dangerous. And inherently prone to abuse. There is a direct solution: Congress should ban mifepristone for use in abortion. And Congress should give every woman harmed by the drug — and we’re talking thousands upon thousands of women — the right to sue Danco and the other drug makers who have lied to them.
Banning mifepristone in abortions is the only realistic way to end this epidemic. The FDA could theoretically reinstate some or all of the older safety restrictions, but as one recent study showed, even with safety restrictions in place, the drug still sends approximately 10% of women to the hospital with serious side effects. And it’s lethal to the baby nearly 100% of the time. Then, too, a future FDA under a liberal president could just take the safety protocols away again.
The real solution is for Congress to act, to permanently stop the drug trade in abortion by barring mifepristone from use in abortions. And to give women their voice back by finally giving them rights against the pharma kingpins.
This is not a sidelight to the fight for life. This is the fight for life. It is the fight of our time. And it cannot wait a day longer.

Urging Congress to take action against the abortion drug mifepristone, a woman named Elizabeth Gillete spoke out Wednesday about her horrific experience with the fatal pill.
Speaking at a press conference organized by Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO), Gillette gave her story of how the abortion drug had harmed her when she was in her 20s and ended the life of her unborn baby. After pressure from her boyfriend, she said she took an abortion pill and said when the baby was expelled from her body he had recognizable eyes, limbs, and earbuds.
“That was so different from the double period and the extra clotting that they told me that I would experience,” she said. “And in that moment, I had to decide if I was going to throw my child in the trash or flush my child down the toilet, and I chose to flush him into a septic tank.”
She said the whole experience gave her post-traumatic stress disorder.
&#8220;And instead of relief, I got horrible nightmares that started, where I would see people dying and people being murdered,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I would hear infants crying in the trash cans when I walked by them, I would hear infants crying in the toilet. I was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, which I still suffer from this day.&#8221;
Her comments came as Hawley announced Wednesday that he had introduced a bill that would ban the use of mifepristone for abortion nationwide. He said the bill was inspired by how the abortion rate has increased despite the overturning of Roe v. Wade. 
“There are more abortions now in the United States than there were when Roe was still the law of the land,” Hawley said. “It is time for Congress to ban the use of mifepristone for abortion.”
“Only Congress can address this situation. Only Congress is placed to regulate the flow of interstate drugs,” he added. 
The proposal would also allow women who were harmed by the abortion drug to sue the manufacturers for damages. 
A companion bill was introduced by Tennessee Republican Diana Harshbarger in the House. 
Mifepristone has quickly become the most common method for ending the life of an unborn baby. The fatal drug, which ends a baby’s life by cutting it off from nutrients needed to survive, has largely fueled the nationwide increase in abortion. Abortionists and leftist activists, protected by so-called shield-laws, have shipped the drug through the mail bypassing red state laws banning medication abortions. 
Data released in December by the pro-abortion Society of Family Planning <a href="https://societyfp.org/research/wecount/wecount-june-2025-data/">revealed</a> that the number of monthly abortions continued to increase in 2025 from 2024, which was itself an increase from 2023. 
Pro-life advocates including Hawley have called for the Trump administration to repeal Biden-era regulations that allowed the drug to be shipped through the mail without an in-person doctor&#8217;s visit. 
The Food and Drug Administration has said that it is conducting a safety study of mifepristone and has kept Biden-era regulations in place that allow the fatal drug to be sent through the mail with no in-person doctor visits. 
Last month, Hawley <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/serious-crisis-hawley-says-congress-must-act-to-combat-rising-abortion-rates?author=Leif+Le+Mahieu&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=‘Serious+Crisis’%3A+Hawley+Says+Congress+Must+Act+To+Combat+Rising+Abortion+Rates">told The Daily Wire</a> that he thought it was time for Congress to get involved in the abortion fight. 
“I think Congress needs to be involved. Congress shouldn’t be a spectator and just outsource this to other people. I think it’s time for Congress to get involved,” he said. 
Those comments came after he attended a close-door briefing with FDA Administrator Marty Makary to discuss the regulation of mifepristone. He said he thought the safety study was a “dead end.”
