New details are emerging about the suspect in the shooting that took place at Abundant Life Christian School.
The Washington Post has <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2024/12/17/madison-wisconsin-school-shooter-natalie-rupnow/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> on the “troubled home life” of the shooter:
<blockquote>The 15-year-old girl who killed two people and wounded six others at her small Christian school here Monday had a turbulent home life, according to court records, which show that her parents divorced and remarried multiple times and that she had been enrolled in therapy. …
“There are always signs of a school shooting before it occurre[s],” Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said at a Tuesday news conference, where he asked the public for patience as authorities investigated [the suspect’s] social media activity and state of mind leading up to the rampage. 
The teen is one of just nine female school shooters in the last 25 years, according to a database maintained by The Post. She is also among the younger recent shooters. … [The suspect’s] father is a Christian who often shared pictures of his dogs and his daughter, according to a review of his Facebook profile. …
But one post, from August, has attracted more scrutiny than others. In it, a photo appears to show [the suspect] wielding a gun and taking aim at a firing range. </blockquote>
Obviously, this means the Left is going to name and focus on gun control as the chief issue.
But, it seems to me, there is a bigger issue here: family turmoil.
I know these are the issues we are not supposed to discuss in American life. We are supposed to believe in a libertarian social ethos that says: When parents have a child and they break up for their own well-being and for the preservation of their own happiness, that has no impact on children whatsoever.
This has been a lie since it started in the 1950s and 1960s in the United States. The divorce rate in those days was significantly lower than the current divorce rate. Today, the divorce rate in the United States shows roughly half of all marriages end in divorce.

Many people will divorce and remarry multiple times. According to The Washington Post&#8217;s review of court records, the suspect&#8217;s parents first married in 2011, about two years after she was born. All social science demonstrates that living together before marriage is often a bad idea because it is an indication that people are not willing to make the commitment to marry before having a child.
Marriage should be the predicate for sleeping together and then having children. I acknowledge these are old-fashioned ideas, but they existed for a reason, just as social institutions did. It was deemed a smart idea to get married before living together because it channeled sexual passions into family building.
A man had to give up his waywardness and make a commitment to a woman before getting one of the things he wanted out of the relationship with the woman. And it meant a woman would have to be pretty discerning about just with whom she chose to have sex, as doing so could result in pregnancy.
The opposite perspective has been quite bad for the West in general. We have declining birth rates, unhappy families, broken families. None of this has been a boon to the West as a general matter, despite all of the West&#8217;s promises that a libertarian sexual ethos would make everyone happier.
Zero evidence exists that a libertarian sexual ethos makes everyone happier. General happiness surveys across the West show a radical decline since the 1970s, particularly among women who are supposed to be the people most liberated by the new sexual ethos.
In this particular case, the mother of the suspect had been previously married and divorced; then, she had another daughter with a different man, to whom she was never married. Court records indicate this girl had other permanent legal guardians. The half sister is now 20-years-old. The suspect&#8217;s parents divorced for the first time in 2014, agreeing to joint legal custody of their shared daughter, but specifying she would live primarily with her mom.
From the Post:
<blockquote>The couple remarried in 2017 and divorced for a second time in 2020, again agreeing to share custody but, the court records show, dividing [the suspect’s] time more evenly between them. During this period, [the suspect] would spend two days with her father, two with her mother, then three more with her father, before reversing the schedule the following week.
Shortly after [the suspect’s] parents split up for the second time, the couple remarried once more. But by April 2021 they were petitioning for a third divorce. A judge granted it a month later but noted that “parties [were] admonished concerning remarriage,” according to court records.
After seeking mediation to determine custody of [the suspect], they agreed in July 2022 that they would share legal custody but that the girl would now live mostly with her father. By this time, [the suspect] had been enrolled in therapy, which was supposed to help guide decisions about which parent she would spend weekends with, the records show. 
The 2022 custody papers said [the suspect’s] parents were on cordial terms. “The parents report a generally positive co-parenting relationship,” the document reads, “and will continue to communicate with one another by text messages and phone conversations.” </blockquote>
Let&#8217;s get real: It doesn&#8217;t matter if mommy and daddy get along when they&#8217;re not living together. What matters is the impact on the child.
This is what happens when the actual value of marriage is substituted for a transitory perception of passion and romance. Marriage is not built predominantly on feelings. It is predominantly built on duty. 
I know this is a strange idea to many people who are living in the post-modern West. But the reality of the world is that marriage was built on commitment.
Marriage itself is an institution that requires fealty to the institution, not merely to the other person who is part of the institution. This bizarre notion that marriage was supposed to be about a sort-of formalization of romantic love as opposed to a shared value system that was capable of building the next generation is a wrong idea.
And it has been a mistake for the West to embrace that.
Romance is an enormous part of marriage. But it is not the chiefly important part of marriage when children become secondary as opposed to the primary purpose. Not only is marriage defeated, but the children are also defeated.
The idea of romance being the primary focus of marriage took hold during the Romantic Period in the 19th century. But it turned out that human biology thwarted the plans of romantic love to overcome the institution of marriage. The institution, like all institutions built by civilization, was built by human beings in order to channel human passions. Then, they were made sacred by human beings in order to civilize their passions.
We build entire civilizations in order to channel those passions in positive directions. One of the most fervent passions people have is the passion for sexual relationships. It&#8217;s very powerful.
It can also be incredibly destructive. This is why marriage is such an important institution. The institution of marriage channels that passion toward the production and rearing of children, as opposed to simply leaving little boys and girls all over the landscape without proper mothers and fathers in functioning households.
Treating women poorly is what happens in a free-love system, which is how women currently feel. They feel men treat them like trash.
And many of the men are looking at the system saying it’s a consensual system. What&#8217;s the problem?
The answer is that the consent women are typically looking for is not merely sexual consent. It is consent to a long-term relationship that is meaningful, spiritual, and purposeful.
When a society lacks these things, the result is tremendous human suffering, true human suffering.

This belief in a concept of “free divorce, easy living, get back together, break up, get back together, break up, find new partners, and the kids will just be fine, because, you know, kids can take it,” is a blight.
The kids can take it? No, you can take it. You&#8217;re the adult.
Is what happened in the school shooting the parents’ fault? Given the fact they were living the way they lived, it’s a reasonable question.
If you treat your children like a bizarre form of chattel, shuttling them between parent and parent because you want to live your best life, guess what? Things go wrong.
Once you have kids, you are no longer first priority. You&#8217;re not even second priority. As a father, you’re third priority. First priority: your kids. Second priority: your wife. And then comes you.
A disproportionate number of people who commit these types of acts are children of broken homes. And it turns out a disproportionate number of people who commit violent crimes are also products of broken homes.
Longstanding social science data indicates delinquency radically increases when no father is present in the home. Crime radically increases; teenage pregnancy radically increases.
This is what happens when a society decides it is very important to disengage from the institutions and civilization that channeled passions and, instead, just humor those passions and let everything else be left by the wayside.
I think the American people are ready for a serious conversation about what the good life looks like. There&#8217;s a lot of talk in politics these days about the common good and what we all hold together. What is it? What is sacred? What ought to be put beyond political debate?
It used to be beyond political debate that family comes first.
I think the American people are tired of all this, tired of the deep libertarian sexual ethos. I think we are in the middle of what could be a cultural renaissance.
That kinship principle — to be with your family in your home, to raise your children so that their children will have healthy children, to build familial wealth over the course of generations, to sit on the porch when you&#8217;re 80 years old with your grandkids playing in the yard, to know you lived a good, dutiful, purposeful life and will continue contributing to future generations — that is what Americans yearn for.
Because without it, the country falls apart.

For those who have either fought in war, or, as in my case, have had loved ones who have, Veterans Day is not just a date on the calendar. It is a reminder that survivors of the battlefield — the most taxing and traumatic of any environment — have given so much of themselves to defend the liberties we all too often take for granted.
During an election year, Veterans Day takes on special significance. When we step into the voting booth and draw the curtain, we are acting out the answer to a fundamental question so many of those returning home from duty must ask themselves: “What, exactly, did I fight for?” The answer is they fight so their fellow Americans are free to choose their leaders and to decide their own fate. It is cliché, but veterans have, indeed, fought for our most basic freedoms, and to exercise our God-given rights without fear of the midnight pounding on the door.
At times, as in my father’s case, our troops have fought not for our freedom per se, but those of others. Entire nations like South Korea, as well as post-war Western Europe, owe American veterans a debt that can never be fully repaid. Many of the men and women would return home maimed, or psychologically broken. Yet, the sublimity of their sacrifice remains. Unfortunately, so do the wounds, the memories, the terrors.
My Marine dad was a rare breed. Unlike many combat veterans, my father would talk about it. I gave him a sounding board, a release valve for the memories that I now understand were assaulting him for three decades since leaving the horrors of Korea behind. He was wounded by Chinese mortars and almost lost his foot. He would tell stories of how the Chinese attacked in human waves, blowing bugles and clanging gongs; how the enemy once splayed the body of a dead Marine across barbed wire between the lines, daring his men to come get their comrade. Marine tradition is to not leave the dead behind, if at all possible. They did retrieve the body. He would share how the North Koreans taught kids to throw grenades at them, and how they’d have to shoot them down; Or how he once identified a man in his platoon by his head, which the aid station attendees in a moment of macabre caprice had laid on the man’s chest.
No doubt what 2nd Lt. John M. Schaeffer, First Marine Division experienced in Korea were the same feelings, if under different circumstances and topographies, of every veteran on every battlefield. The blood, the shrieks, the pleas for water, the crying out for mothers, and the gore are universal no matter what side the combatants find themselves on. Indeed, Wellington famously <a href="https://www.nam.ac.uk/explore/battle-waterloo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>, “Believe me, nothing except a battle lost can be half so melancholy as a battle won.”

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), called “shell shock” in the First World War, and “battle fatigue” in the Second, is another consequence of the battlefield. As with any disorder of the mind, studies vary and exact figures are hard to come by as it manifests in so many different ways and to various degrees. <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2891773/#:~:text=The%20point%20prevalence%20of%20combat,returning%20UK%20Iraq%20War%20veterans.">One study</a> by the National Library of Medicine places combat-related PTSD in U.S. combat veterans to range from about 2–17%; and a lifetime prevalence of about 6–31%. These are broad ranges. And the low estimates seem just that. Even if we split the difference in a non-scientific way, almost one-in-five veterans are currently suffering from some form of PTSD. When you consider that <a href="https://www.census.gov/newsroom/facts-for-features/2023/veterans-day.html#:~:text=16.2%20million,population%20age%2018%20and%20over." target="_blank" rel="noopener">16.2 million veterans</a> will be the subject of this month’s annual day of remembrance, then we may have some 3 million-plus veterans in need of counseling or medication/treatment out there.
These are not just statistics. These numbers represent veterans, our champions on the field of conflict, who struggle every day just to live normal lives while not dwelling too much upon all they have seen. But sometimes the horrors of battle can never be unseen. I remember looking at my dad and thinking: Do the ghosts return when you lie in bed at night? Can you compartmentalize it? How do you handle it?
Turns out, he couldn’t. After thirty years, he could no longer drink or talk away the war. The memories were assaulting him like those mass waves of Chinese soldiers long ago. His defenses crumbled. He was not alone. In 1990-2010 the national suicide rate among American males was 19.4 per 100,000, and 4.9 per 100,000 for females. According to the <a href="https://www.ptsd.va.gov/professional/treat/cooccurring/suicide_ptsd.asp#:~:text=From%201999%2D2010%2C%20the%20suicide,12.8%20per%20100%2C000%20in%20females." target="_blank" rel="noopener">Department of Veterans Affairs</a>, however, in the same time period the ratios for veterans were double for men at 38.3 per 100,000 and almost triple for women at 12.8 per 100,000. Clearly, veterans are a high-risk group, and we must be vigilant and watch for suicidal ideations among those we love who wore the uniform.
Like many mental illnesses, PTSD is insidious. It comes from within. How do you fight an illness in which your thoughts are the illness? People who’ve never suffered the midnight of clinical depression, PTSD, or other mental illnesses, have difficulty grasping that you cannot reason your way back into the happy dawn. You can’t just “snap out of it.” You may tell yourself, “Nothing warrants these terrible thoughts.” You know it’s irrational and it doesn’t matter. That’s what depression is. It’s knowing you shouldn’t feel this way, but feel it anyway.
And that doesn’t even include a depression caused by something you saw or, worse, something you did. Under normal circumstances, far from the chaos and adrenaline of a battlefield, you would never encounter the raw emotion and bloodlust of war. You would be repulsed by your actions. How could I, for example, who was only 16 when my father eventually took his life, possibly relate to a man who fought Chinese troops armed with spades, picks, and even his bare hands as well as bullets and bayonets, in the middle of the night in minus twenty-degree weather under the eerie luminescence of star shells? How can anyone but other veterans truly relate to a combat experience?
It’s tragic, but if my veteran father were alive today, he would have more support, both within his own veterans community and the public at large. And certainly access to more effective medications, without any taboo. But we were just starting to recognize veterans’ emotional as well as physical anguish. Vietnam was barely decades in the past. And as for Korea? It was called “the Forgotten War” for a reason. Forgetting the war and getting on with their lives was what Korea’s veterans were supposed to do. But Dad couldn’t.
And that really is the point. This Veterans Day, let’s take time out of our busy day to pause and reflect and pray for all the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines who have seen the worst of humanity up close and personal, to spare us the horrors of what they took upon themselves in our stead. As the saying goes, “Free people sleep peaceably in their beds because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.” My father was just such a rough man. And, like so many vets today, he did unspeakable violence on our behalf. But that violence comes with a cost that we may not always appreciate or even see, let alone understand.
My thoughts this Veterans Day travel to our warriors returning home from their own combat zones, with their own demons picking away at their souls. How do they get through the black nights, with their spouses sleeping quietly next to them, their children dreaming in their beds, blissfully unaware of the struggle of the mind taking place in the darkness down the hall?
In July 1983, 30 years almost to the day after the last shot of the Korean War was fired, my father became another casualty of that war. Yet from his suffering, I have learned a vital lesson that I hope I can impart to any veteran reading this who may feel like he or she is losing the fight with PTSD: Don’t let the demons win. We’ll help you. Just please choose life.
To the families of veterans, you must be forceful in offering your help, your support, and love. Warriors are a stubborn and proud lot. And to all the veterans now engaged in their final tour of duty, this time in the combat zone of the spirit, I implore you. Choose life. Get help if you need it. It is there for you.
Remember you are not forgotten. We owe our freedom, like the freedoms we all exercised on November 5, to you. And, in return, you are unconditionally loved and appreciated by family, friends, and your nation. So always choose life. It is worth living.

The new rule in the NFL is that if you kneel for the national anthem and a national controversy then engulfs you, you get a million-dollar contract from Nike. Then, the NFL definitely attempts for years on end to get you back into the league, despite the fact that you stink so much that you&#8217;re benched for the immortal Blaine Gabbert. 
That, of course, is the story of Colin Kaepernick, who became even richer and more famous than he was after going to the Super Bowl because he knelt for the national anthem.
Despite all of the attempts to paint Kaepernick as a victim, precisely the opposite is true. Kaepernick was touted as a hero by large swathes of the mainstream media. He was put on the cover of magazines because he was kneeling for the national anthem, supposedly because black Americans like Kaepernick — who, by the way, was raised in a white household that adopted him — were victims of a white supremacist system.
Fast forward a few years. The hot controversy of the day in the NFL is a kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs named Harrison Butker.
There are now calls for him to be removed from the Chiefs roster for the upcoming NFL season from some radical Left fans and their allies. Why?
Because he is Catholic, and he gave a 20-minute commencement speech at Benedictine College, which is Catholic, in which he talked about Catholicism.
That&#8217;s all this is.
What he said was very traditional in terms of men, women, and Catholic theology. This, apparently, is absolutely outrageous. What did he do that was so wildly offensive that people now know his name, when, as a kicker, nobody knew his name five seconds ago?
It&#8217;s not like Kaepernick, who was already well-known for having taken his team to the Super Bowl years before he knelt. Unless you&#8217;re a big fan of football, you really had no idea who Harrison Butker was until five minutes ago.
But now he&#8217;s become a national name because the media have decided he is the root of all evil. Why? Because he&#8217;s saying what Catholics have been saying for 2,000 years. And he said it at a Catholic college.

So let&#8217;s examine what Harrison Butker said and the controversy, which is indicative of the real social issues gap between Left and Right that is undergirding so much of our ugly politics these days. You have a Left that has embraced transgenderism as an absolute virtue and a Right that is saying men and women exist and are different.
What Butker said is believed and agreed with by a huge swathe of Americans, Catholic and non-Catholic alike. In his <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JS7RIKSaCc&amp;t=474s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">commencement address</a>, he stated:
<blockquote>It is only in the past few years that I have grown encouraged to speak more boldly and directly because, as I mentioned earlier, I have leaned into my vocation as a husband and father, and as a man.
To the gentlemen here today: Part of what plagues our society is this lie that has been told to you that men are not necessary in the home or in our communities. As men, we set the tone of the culture, and when that is absent, disorder, dysfunction, and chaos set in. This absence of men in the home is what plays a large role in the violence we see all around the nation. Other countries do not have nearly the same absentee father rates as we find here in the U.S., and a correlation could be made in their drastically lower violence rates, as well.
 Be unapologetic in your masculinity, fighting against the cultural emasculation of men. Do hard things. Never settle for what is easy. You might have a talent that you don&#8217;t necessarily enjoy, but if it glorifies God, maybe you should lean into that over something that you might think suits you better. </blockquote>
These views used to be wildly uncontroversial. But now, if you suggest that men have something special to present to the world, that is considered controversial. What he said was contrasted with his statements about the role of females in society at large and what brings female happiness. It was very traditional, and I agree with it:
<blockquote>I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you. How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.
I can tell you that my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother. I&#8217;m on the stage today and able to be the man I am because I have a wife who leans into her vocation. I&#8217;m beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me, but it cannot be overstated that all of my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.</blockquote>
Why in the world is that controversial? Why? He&#8217;s not saying, “Don&#8217;t have a career.” He&#8217;s saying the most important thing you will do in your life is be a wife and be a mom.
It was this particular statement to women that led to a thousand think pieces about how terrible all of this was. How dare he suggest that perhaps women find fulfillment in being married and having children?
It’s a lie that women can forego being a wife and mother and find the same levels of happiness on a general level. It may not be true for every individual, but on a general level, it’s true. The parallel lie these people envision for men is that they should forego the great joy in life of being a father, a husband, a protector, and a provider.
Those lies have led to the dissolution of society.
Here are your choices: Choice #1: Harrison Butker, who speaks movingly about meeting his wife, marrying her, and having children with her. Choice #2: NFL players who are impregnating women and abandoning their children.
The NFL has nothing to say about that. Nothing. The NFL is completely silent about players like Antonio Cromartie, who seems to have fathered half the country at this point. There’s no comment about him.
But if Harrison Butker speaks of his perspective, the NFL condemns him. They put out <a href="https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2024/05/16/sport/harrison-butker-commencement-speech-analysis-cec" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a statement</a> saying, “Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity. His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”
Have they ever issued a statement like this before?
The other issue Butker discussed was the sin of pride — that if you’re proud of things that Catholicism considers sinful, that is not good. He stated:
<blockquote>Because there seems to be so much confusion coming from our leaders, there needs to be concrete examples for people to look to in places like Benedictine, a little Kansas college built high on a bluff above the Missouri River, are showing the world how an ordered, Christ-centered existence is the recipe for success. You need to look no further than the examples all around this campus, where over the past 20 years, enrollment has doubled, construction and revitalization are a constant part of life, and people, the students, the faculty and staff, are thriving.
This didn&#8217;t happen by chance. In a deliberate movement to embrace traditional Catholic values, Benedictine has gone from just another liberal arts school with nothing to set it apart to a thriving beacon of light and a reminder to us all that when you embrace tradition, success — worldly and spiritual — will follow.
I am certain the reporters at the AP could not have imagined that their attempt to rebuke and embarrass places and people like those here at Benedictine wouldn&#8217;t be met with anger, but instead met with excitement and pride. Not the deadly sin sort of pride that has an entire month dedicated to it, but the true God-centered pride that is cooperating with the Holy Ghost to glorify him. Reading that article now shared all over the world, we see that in the complete surrender of self and a turning towards Christ, you will find happiness. Right here in a little town in Kansas, we find many inspiring laypeople using their talents.</blockquote>
That, of course, was offensive to the social Left.
Butker also had the temerity to point out that top-level politicians in the United States, including the president of the United States, call themselves Catholic while constantly contravening Catholic doctrine.
He stated:
<blockquote>Our own nation is led by a man who publicly and proudly proclaims his Catholic faith, but at the same time is delusional enough to make the Sign of the Cross during a pro- abortion rally. He has been so vocal in his support for the murder of innocent babies that I&#8217;m sure to many people it appears that you can be both Catholic and pro-choice.
He is not alone. From the man behind the COVID lockdowns to the people pushing dangerous gender ideologies onto the youth of America, they all have a glaring thing in common. They are Catholic. This is an important reminder that being Catholic alone doesn&#8217;t cut it. These are the sorts of things we are told in polite society to not bring up. You know, the difficult and unpleasant things. But if we are going to be men and women for this time in history, we need to stop pretending that the &#8220;Church of Nice&#8221; is a winning proposition. We must always speak and act in charity, but never mistake charity for cowardice.</blockquote>
One hundred percent correct.
Further, Colin Kaepernick hijacked a TV broadcast of the NFL in order to politically protest the American flag. He was doing it on the NFL field before the game as part of the actual NFL broadcast.
Harrison Butker spoke far away from the NFL field at a Catholic college as a Catholic, and the Left is calling for him to be punished by the NFL.

The real answer as to why this huge yawning gap has emerged in the United States is because there is a culture gap between the values of San Francisco and New York and the values of places like Youngstown, Ohio. It is a massive culture gap between people who believe as Harrison Butker does and people who believe as Joe Biden&#8217;s minions do.
Harrison Butker versus Colin Kaepernick is a good indicator of Right versus Left in the country right now.

One woman was killed and a number of others — including several children — were injured in the crossfire.
Officials reported that in the aftermath of the shooting, two juveniles have been arrested and detained, and three men were charged with federal gun crimes.

The Irish government has been served the mother of all wake-up calls.
Having spent 24 million euros in taxpayer money on a virtue-signaling effort to convince the nation to remove the word “mother” from its Constitution, the Irish government was dealt a swift clip around the ear this past weekend with a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ireland-looks-set-reject-constitutional-changes-2024-03-09/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">resounding defeat</a> of its latest “progressive” referendum.
The proposed changes would have removed provisions that recognize and honor women’s service to society in raising the next generation of responsible citizens:
<blockquote>… the State recognises that by her life within the home, woman gives to the State a support without which the common good cannot be achieved.
The State shall, therefore, endeavour to ensure that mothers shall not be obliged by economic necessity to engage in labour to the neglect of their duties in the home.</blockquote>
A “yes” result would have replaced this language with a gender neutral alternative, obliging the State more vaguely to support care within the home and the community. It might seem like a small tweak. And certainly, there are some men who play a significant role as stay-at-home dads. But the male and female experiences in the workplace, home, and society-at-large are different. Women and men are not interchangeable. The pressures placed on mothers are unique. It’s she, having birthed the child in an experience that no man can replicate, who then navigates the delicate balance of work-versus-family.
Irish mothers, it would seem, knew best — with a thundering 74% vote in favor of protecting the original wording of the constitution.
The data has always supported such an outcome — which the government might have noticed, had they not blindly assumed that they could speak for the women of Ireland. <a href="https://everymum.ie/my-family/two-thirds-of-irish-mothers-would-prefer-to-stay-home-instead-of-going-to-work" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Two-thirds</a> of Irish mums would prefer to stay at home to parent full-time, than return to work — if only they could afford it.
It’s a sentiment echoed across the West, with <a href="https://time.com/4068559/gallup-poll-stay-at-home-mothers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">56%</a> of American mums agreeing that they’d prefer to stay home and prioritize child-raising over career advancement. Over a <a href="https://www.civitas.org.uk/2023/05/10/mothers-preferences-over-childcare-and-work/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">third</a> of their British counterparts concur. Today’s model of “boss babe” feminism typically stigmatizes this dream, requiring women regain social status by rejoining the rat race to the boardroom as soon as possible after giving birth.
But what have we gained from such a model? A plummeting birth rate, for one. The pressure on women to spend their twenties and thirties advancing through zoom calls and office cubicles has surely played a hand in the birthrate recently <a href="https://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/irelands-birth-rate-drops-sharply-to-reach-lowest-level-in-decades-1598551.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">falling</a> to the lowest level on record in six decades. A generation of disillusioned women have been schooled that their value in society depends on their GDP contribution, rather than their input into raising the next generation.
Western governments have taken “maternity policy” to largely mean cheaper outsourcing of childcare, to allow women to return to work as soon as possible — rather than finding creative solutions to support women’s choices to prioritize parenting, and invest in raising the next generation. The outcome for society is yet to be fully unpacked. U.S. studies <a href="https://www.nichd.nih.gov/sites/default/files/publications/pubs/documents/seccyd_06.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">show</a> that lots of hours spent in outsourced daycare can have a link to increased aggression and disobedience in children, poorer relationships with teachers, and a higher susceptibility to risk-taking at the age of 15 — including through sex, drugs and alcohol use.
It’s not only an outdated concept of Carrie Bradshaw feminism that is downgrading the value and respect attributed to mums. The growing practice of surrogacy demands the commercialization of motherhood — downgrading the role of a pregnant mother as a mere “incubator” for a product to be passed on to a customer. An increasing trend amongst gay men growing a family through surrogacy is to announce the news on social media with their shirts off, in a hospital bed, posing as if post-birth. UK Law Commission proposals would seek to enable two dads in such a situation to be named on the birth certificate on the day, thus erasing both the legal and social role of a mother in the life of the child she carried and delivered.
There’s no question about it — dads are amazing, and are necessary in a child’s life. But a thousand excellent dads cannot replace one mum — and her unique, feminine, nurturing role. The life of a mother is an often thankless task. Ireland are miles ahead of the rest of the West in acknowledging her irreplaceable role within their constitution. It’s time now to put their words into practice — by honoring mums with better, more flexible work options, and the ability to make an empowered choice to stay absent from the workforce for the length of time she deems necessary to raise her children.
The Irish government have talked a strong game about supporting “choice” in recent years. If that’s the case, it’s long past time to support a woman’s choice to be a committed mum.

For those with a special someone, today is Valentine’s Day. For all the single ladies, it is Galentine’s Day. But what is it for the bachelors? To my knowledge, men do not band together en masse on February 14th to mix up fruity pink cocktails, watch chick flicks, and build solidarity in their singleness. In fact, bromances appear to be in decline, as 15% of men say they <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/2021/07/american-men-suffer-a-friendship-recession/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">have zero close friends</a>. 
The male friendship recession is just one manifestation of the boy crisis, a crisis worth reflecting on especially today, the day of big romance. The boy crisis is widespread, impacting boys and men academically, economically, physically, and spiritually. On average, the IQs of boys are declining. The <a href="https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/leading-causes-of-death-in-men" target="_blank" rel="noopener">second leading cause of death</a> for American men under 45 is suicide. Largely due to drug abuse and physical and mental problems, only 25% of men ages 17-24 <a href="https://amarkfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/DOD-QMA-2020-Brief-PUBLIC.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">qualified for military service in 2020</a>. As the wages of those with a high school degree decline, some men are willingly checking out of the workforce altogether, so much so that male workforce engagement now matches the level it was during the Great Depression. All this adds up to millions of young men who have been left without purpose.
While our education system and the shift from a manufacturing to a global knowledge economy have done their fair share of damage, according to <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Boy-Crisis-Boys-Struggling-About/dp/1942952716" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Boy Crisis: Why Our Boys are Struggling and What We Can Do About It</a>, (Farrell &amp; Gray, 2018) the ultimate driver behind the boy crisis is dad deprivation. Approximately 40% of children are born out of wedlock; because of this and high divorce rates, <a href="https://www.deseret.com/2023/6/15/23758334/fathers-day-brad-wilcox-fatherhood-in-america" target="_blank" rel="noopener">as Brad Wilcox</a>, director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia, states, “only about half of children will spend the duration of their childhood with both of their biological parents.” Moms and dads contribute in unique and essential ways to the raising of children, but boys especially need the modeled manifestation of what it means to be a good man, and their first model is their fathers. 
Single parents, who have sometimes been unwillingly left behind by divorce, make valorous sacrifices for their children, and <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1741-3729.2008.00533.x" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nonresidential fathers are doing a better job of staying involved</a>. But the practical realities of fatherhood apart from marriage are often challenging. For example, according to The Boy Crisis, “when unmarried couples live together when their child is born, by the child’s third birthday, 40 percent of those children will have no regular contact with their dad for the next two years—between ages three and five.” For this reason, if we want to get serious about addressing the boy crisis, we need to get serious about marriage. Understanding the purpose of marriage will help us fortify it.
Many now believe that romance is the cornerstone of marriage. Once it dissipates, the couple should part ways so that each individual can find that lovin’ feeling again. More frequently than in the past, couples are divorcing for <a href="https://www.city-journal.org/article/the-two-parent-advantage" target="_blank" rel="noopener">less serious reasons</a>. The dissolution of &#8220;low conflict&#8221; relationships is <a href="https://www.demographic-research.org/volumes/vol36/3/36-3.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">particularly detrimental for children</a>, as they can experience more stress and more of a feeling of loss following separation. 
Much of our culture reinforces such attitudes towards relationships. The radical autonomy of expressive individualism permeates our moral imagination. Expressive individualism, “involves growing and changing as a person, paying attention to your feelings, and expressing your needs.” As Andrew Cherlin, a sociology and public policy professor at Johns Hopkins University, explains in <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Marriage-Go-Round-State-Marriage-Family-America/dp/0307386384/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&amp;qid=1707922637&amp;sr=1-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Marriage-Go-Round: The State of Marriage and the Family in America Today</a>, under such conditions, “marriages are harder to keep together, because what matters is not merely the things they jointly produce—well-adjusted children, nice homes—but also each person’s own happiness.” And by happiness we mean pleasure and psychological self-actualization, not human flourishing grounded in virtue and obligation.
In truth, admirable marriages are replete with work and adventure. Their purpose is to provide a stable and loving environment for the rearing and education of children and to form the character of each spouse. Marriage is often not easy or comfortable. As human beings, we grow attached to our favorite vices, and letting them go can be painful. But it is also freeing. Ideally in marriage, rather than prioritizing his or her own emotional satisfaction, through choice and circumstance, each spouse sacrifices for the sake of that mysterious third entity: the marriage.  
Our culture largely no longer promotes this understanding. Those Galentine’s Day favorites (excluding the incomparable work of ethicist Jane Austen) often don’t depict what it is that really matters when looking for a spouse. Indeed, it is no accident that many chick flicks end at the altar, perhaps because marriage occasionally falls short of being camera-ready. This is not to say that all romantic films are bad. Part of the reason they appeal to us is because they affirm how important relationships are for long-term happiness. The choice of a spouse is the decision of a lifetime.
Yet numerous singles today have been left confused about how to choose well. Many children of divorce grow up lacking a model of a solid marriage. As adults, such children <a href="https://doi.org/10.1037/0736-9735.21.3.353">can have a negative view of marriage</a>, struggle to work through conflict in a healthy manner, and are unsure what characteristics to prioritize in a partner. <a href="https://www.heritage.org/marriage-and-family/commentary/the-culture-online-dating-encourages-hook-ups-not-marriage">Online dating makes this worse</a>. After being bombarded with profiles, users end up thinking that they should be able to find someone who embodies all the features they dream they desire.
We need to shift our cultural conversation around marriage, to move away from pure romance toward the deep, abiding, and sacrificial love that husbands and wives offer each other and their children. Doing so will help end the dad deprivation that is the main driver of today’s boy crisis. And then, perhaps, our boys, too, will have valentines.

Daytime talk show host <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/celebrities">Maury Povich</a>, who is well known for announcing the results of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/father">paternity tests</a> on air, took his talents to the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/denver">Denver Zoo</a> for a big reveal.
The 84-year-old “Maury” host told waiting fans which male in the orangutan group fathered a four-month-old baby named Siska. The options were 30-year-old Berani or 16-year-old Jaya. 
The Denver Zoo had some fun with it, having Povich announce the baby’s paternity with his customary line, “You are the father!” in a video reveal posted to X on December 19.
“Fresh off receiving the Daytime Emmys Lifetime Achievement Honor, Maury Povich is here to help us announce the paternity results for Siska, our four-month-old Sumatran orangutan! Is Siska&#8217;s father thirty-year-old Berani or 16-year-old Jaya? Watch the video for the big reveal!” the zoo’s social media post said in the caption.
Povich donned a tuxedo and bow tie for the big moment.

“When it comes to the orangutan — 4-month-old Siska — Berani, you are  the father,” he continued as the screen split showed a photo of the two potential dads.
After the reveal, the video showed several people cheering and cut to an image of an orangutan, ostensibly Berani, swinging around in his enclosure.

“Berani is the father,” the people then said in unison, as the video drew to a close.
Though “Maury” is technically retired, he recently said he’d resume his <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/maury-povich-says-hell-come-out-of-retirement-to-dna-test-matthew-mcconaughey-and-woody-harrelson">DNA test reveals</a> for Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, who have said publicly that there’s a chance they’re really brothers. 
“We could do primetime, ‘DNA: Maury’s Back With Woody and Matthew.’ I’ll even get my showtime color back in my hair,” Povich said in September. “Woody’s got my number. I’m ready.”
McConaughey told Kelly Ripa that his mom made him wonder if Harrelson might be related to him. 
“In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families. And my mom is there, and she says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad,’” McConaughey said at the time. “Everyone was aware of the ellipses that my mom left after ‘knew.’ It was a loaded K-N-E-W.”
The “Dallas Buyers Club” actor said he wasn’t sure if he wanted to take the test because of what it would mean to find out that the man who raised him potentially wasn’t his biological father.

Many people on social media reacted with praise for <a href="https://get.dailywire.com/subscribe/plus-v3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bentkey</a>’s top kids show “Chip Chilla” Tuesday after The New York Times published a piece <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/jeremy-boreing-slams-nyt-after-paper-targets-bentkeys-chip-chilla-for-depicting-weirdly-present-father" target="_blank" rel="noopener">targeting</a> the series for depicting a “weirdly present” father. 
In the Times piece published on Monday, writer Amanda Hess criticized portrayals of the fathers in “Chip Chilla” and the popular Australian series “Bluey” as “fantasy” because they are active and engaged with their children. The NYT writer also suggested that the dad in “Chip Chilla” is the worst offender of the two because he teaches “lessons about dead white people.” 
“Remember, folks, Bentkey&#8217;s #ChipChilla is Extremely Problematic™ because it teaches kids about &#8220;dead white people&#8221; like, you know, many of the greatest heroes of all time,” Daily Wire Editor Emeritus Ben Shapiro <a href="https://twitter.com/benshapiro/status/1737227430975185364" target="_blank" rel="noopener">posted</a> on X. “Also, it is now Extremely Patriarchal™ for Dad to be involved with educating the kids, per the NYT&#8217;s latest critique of #ChipChilla. Better to trans them, obviously.”
“‘I hate Chip Chilla because the dad isn’t a lazy idiot and the mom does housework. Also, I hate my kids!’ —the NYT,” Daily Wire host Michael Knowles <a href="https://twitter.com/michaeljknowles/status/1737225782945267824" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>. 
“Love it. The @nytimes has become so morally deformed it&#8217;s almost cruel to laugh at them. But I&#8217;ll try my best,” Daily Wire host Andrew Klavan <a href="https://twitter.com/andrewklavan/status/1737182757757780171" target="_blank" rel="noopener">added</a>.

Others on social media piled on the Times for the piece while praising “Chip Chilla” for entertaining children through good values.

Another person credited the NYT for “facilitating” Chip Chilla’s introduction to his children.

“Kind of weird seeing @nytimes advertise for @realDailyWire like this,” another person on X <a href="https://twitter.com/MichaelFKane/status/1737168800783409663" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>. “As a parent, hearing them compare Chip Chilla in the same breath as Bluey is high praise. Lol.”
After the NYT piece was published, Daily Wire co-founder Jeremy Boreing <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/jeremy-boreing-slams-nyt-after-paper-targets-bentkeys-chip-chilla-for-depicting-weirdly-present-father" target="_blank" rel="noopener">responded</a>, writing, “Chip Chilla is the most popular show on our new Bentkey platform, and Bluey is the most popular children’s show period,” Boreing added. “It’s no coincidence that two shows that feature loving and engaged nuclear families with great values who actually enjoy being together are so popular.”
He went on to note how it’s “no coincidence” that the “cultural gatekeepers” at the Times are targeting these particular programs.
“The left not only wants to add its radical agenda to kids entertainment, they want to remove good values from kids entertainment,” Boreing said.

NYT writer Amanda Hess noted in her<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/18/arts/television/bluey-chip-chilla-dad.html"> article</a> how in the first episode of “Bluey,” the archeologist father, Bandit, “keeps house” while his wife works outside the home. She describes Bandit as “a fun dad who does housework, too” and always plays with his kids. Hess views this portrayal as unrealistic, writing that his “omnipresence is odd, and striking.” 
The writer goes on to describe how her own child is often “staring at a screen” while she takes care of household chores like laundry. “Bandit represents a parent freed of drudgery, one whose central responsibility is delighting his kids,” Hess adds, claiming that parents don’t play with their children in real life because they’re too focused on other tasks.
Hess has the same complaints about Bentkey’s “Chip Chilla,” which is about a homeschooling family with the dad, Chum Chum, serving as the children&#8217;s instructor. She describes Chum Chum as “a highly involved father and unrelenting jokester who rarely seems to have to work.”
She also says Chum Chum is likely the children’s teacher “because it puts male authority at the center of the show.”
“Our culture has fallen so far and at times it might seem hopeless,&#8221; Boreing concluded. &#8220;Bentkey isn’t anywhere near the level of size and influence of the NYTs and Disneys of the world, but we created it because we have hope and believe our best days are ahead of us, and that the only way we can take back the culture from the left is by building something better.&#8221;

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/al-pacino">Al Pacino</a> agreed to pay the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/parents">mother</a> of his young son $30,000 per month in child support payments, according to documents obtained by <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2023/11/02/al-pacino-30000-per-month-child-support-noor-alfallah/">TMZ</a>.
The 83-year-old <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/entertainment">actor</a> shocked fans when it was revealed that he <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/father">fathered</a> a son with his 29-year-old girlfriend, Noor Alfallah, in June of this year. Now the pair has worked out a financial arrangement regarding their child, though it’s believed that they are still romantically involved.
The outlet reported that Pacino will begin by paying $110,000 up front and then $30,000 a month in base child support, though that number could fluctuate depending on his income, with that amount increasing by $90,000 at the end of the year. He will also put $15,000 per year in an education fund for their son, Roman.
TMZ also noted that Pacino has been paying $13,000 a month for a night nurse. The “Dog Day Afternoon” actor will also apparently fork over extra money for any medical expenses which aren’t covered by insurance.
Alfallah previously filed a petition in September to determine the parental relationship between herself, Pacino, and the baby, as The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/al-pacinos-29-year-old-baby-mama-files-for-full-custody-just-3-months-after-giving-birth">reported</a>. The documents allowed for Pacino to have “reasonable visitation” rights with the child but requested full physical custody for Alfallah. 
Alfallah also requested the actor to pay her legal fees and court costs.
Pacino has three other children: 33-year-old Julie with Jan Tarrant, and 22-year-old twins Anton and Olivia with Beverly D’Angelo. He has never been married. The actor was allegedly surprised to have fathered a child with Alfallah due to a medical condition he has which causes infertility. Pacino is believed to have asked for a paternity test, which did confirm the child was his.
Though he wasn’t expecting it, Pacino was apparently happy to be having another baby. “It’s very special. It always has been. I’ve got many kids. But this is really special coming at this time,” he said.
