<p>Celebrities spent years singing “love yourself” from the stage and lecturing all of us about radical body acceptance. But then, a funny thing happened: weight loss drugs hit the scene.</p>
<p>Now, some members of Hollywood have lost half their body weight and have been scrubbing the evidence from their feeds, rewriting the script about what “self-love” actually looks like. It’s all been very revealing for fans who fell for their lies about being happy at any weight. Because the second a quick-fix, injectable weight loss solution came along, these celebs dropped the “fat can be beautiful” act like a loaded baked potato.</p>
<p>One prime example is Amy Schumer. The comedian recently wiped her Instagram clean, deleting every pre-transformation post and replacing it with a single shot of her newly thinned-down physique, which included the caption, “Who’s proud? I’m feeling good and happy. Deleted my old pics for no reason.”</p>

<p>The Instagram sweep came on the heels of a very public weight-loss journey and candid interviews about her struggles with GLP-1 drugs. Schumer <a href="https://pagesix.com/2025/03/22/celebrity-news/amy-schumer-back-on-weight-loss-drugs-after-horrible-experience-with-wegovy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">admitted</a> having a “horrible experience” when she tried Ozempic at first, saying the shots left her bedridden and vomiting.</p>
<p>The comedian said while Ozempic was a no-go, she had very different results after switching to another popular drug, Mounjaro.</p>
<p>Fans complained, saying it was one thing to be outspoken about your health journey, but that deleting those old photos felt like trying to erase the past.</p>
<p>Schumer <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DQ-SUGFDkpb/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">addressed</a> the controversy by insisting she was justified in scrubbing her socials.</p>
<p>“I didn’t delete my old photos because they were pre me losing weight. That’s a narrative you created. I’m proud of how I’ve looked always,” she insisted.</p>
<p>“I have been working to be pain-free and I finally am,” the comedian explained. “My endometriosis is better. My back is healing. I no longer have Cushing syndrome so my face went back to normal. I am grateful to be strong and healthy especially for my son.”</p>
<p>But the social media purge itself said something different. No matter how she tried to play it, deleting those photos sent a clear message: Who I was before is not who I am now. All praise Mounjaro!</p>
<p>Perhaps the most egregious example of this phenomenon is pop singer Meghan Trainor, who built her whole career around worshipping her curvy body and rejecting the thin-is-best messaging. Her 2014 hit single “All About That Bass” includes the line, “Yeah, it’s pretty clear, I ain’t no size two.”</p>
<p>But then Trainor discovered weight loss drugs and with it, a newfound appreciation for, well, being a size two. During a performance in May 2025, Trainor swapped that lyric for “I got some new boobs” and received a ton of heat for rejecting her status as a curvy role model for the masses.</p>

<p>Like Schumer, she’s openly discussed using weight loss drugs.</p>
<p>“I’ve been on a journey to be the healthiest, strongest version of myself for my kids and for me,” Trainor <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DH4nStgyl_p/?hl=en&amp;img_index=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> in a lengthy Instagram post. “I’ve worked with a dietician, made huge lifestyle changes, started exercising with a trainer, and yes, I used science and support (shoutout to Mounjaro!) to help me after my 2nd pregnancy. And I’m so glad I did because I feel great.”</p>
<p>Fans were annoyed, and as she stated recently, the pop singer could not understand why.</p>
<p>One popular TikTok comment under the <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@1027kiisfm/video/7503222030515375390?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">video</a> of Trainor singing the new version of her hit song said, “‘Big is beautiful until you’re rich enough to change it.’ — story of the entertainment industry.”</p>
<p>Another person agreed, writing, “She has every right to change and nobody is hating on her. But because her body was a little more relatable it hit with a specific audience. Now it doesn’t hit the same. No shade just is what it is.”</p>
<p>Trainor spoke about the backlash during a conversation with iHeartRadio’s Kayla Thomas on November 14.</p>
<p>“I’m getting a lot of hate online just posting who I am. Everyone’s just being like, ‘Why are you thin now? You were ‘All About That Bass’ girl,’” she said.</p>
<p>“I was 19 when I came out with that song, and I’ve been on a fitness journey since I got healthy,” Trainor added. “It started when I was pregnant. I had gestational diabetes. I was like, ‘Oh, I gotta learn about health and fitness. If I wanna tour forever, I wanna be at my strongest. If I wanna lift up my kids from their crib and not pull out my back.’”</p>
<p>“So now I’m strength training three times a week in the gym and I am so focused on health,” she went on. “But I got a lot of hate for being thinner. That confused me, rattled me, so I wrote the song ‘Still Don’t Care,’” she added.</p>
<p>The phrase “fitness journey” keeps coming up. While these celebrities admit to using Mounjaro, they credit the weight loss to good habits and better workout schedules.</p>
<p>Lizzo’s case is different, but also egregious. She’s the most vocal pop star version of the body positivity movement, with many songs praising her voluptuous figure. When rumors first started circulating that she’d used Ozempic following some noticeable weight loss, she pushed back publicly, but what she said wasn’t exactly a denial.</p>
<p>“I’ve tried everything,” Lizzo said. “It’s just the science, for me, calories in vs. calories out. Ozempic works because you eat less food.”</p>
<p>“It makes you feel full. So, if you can just do that on your own and get mind-over-matter, it’s the same,” she added.</p>
<p>Interestingly, Lizzo also credited eating meat after being vegan as helping her shed pounds. “What did it for me was — actually it was not being vegan,” Lizzo said, as The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/lizzo-says-ditching-vegan-diet-for-beef-helped-her-lose-weight" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. “Because when I was vegan, I was consuming a lot of fake meats. I was eating a lot of bread. I was eating a lot of rice, and I had to eat a lot of it to stay full. But really I was consuming like 3,000 to 5,000 calories a day.”</p>
<p>“So for me, when I actually started eating whole foods and eating, like, beef and chicken and fish, I was actually full and not expanding my stomach by putting a lot of, like, fake things in there that wasn’t actually filling me up,” she continued.</p>
<p>Lizzo addressed some of the backlash in a May 2023 TikTok video.</p>
<p>“Once I started working out for mental health, to have balanced mental health or endorphins, so that I don’t look at myself in the mirror and feel ashamed of myself, and feel disgusted with myself, exercise has helped me shift my mind, not my body,” she said at the time. “My body is gonna change, everyone’s bodies change. That’s life.”</p>
<p>Shaming people for making healthier choices is never a good idea. But when celebrities build their brands on body positivity and then do an about-face after discovering drugs that promote weight loss, it’s fair to call out the gap between what they said and what they’re doing.</p>
<p>The central complaint from fans is about consistency. If “body positivity” means unconditional acceptance of fatness, then it’s not fair to start slimming down and pretending their past selves never existed.</p>
<p>Right or not, fans absorb messages from influencers and pop stars. These public figures oscillating between “love the body you’re in” and “I changed my body for confidence” lead to frustration for their followers, who believe whatever they say.</p>
<p>One solution is just being honest from the start and admitting that being overweight is not an ideal to aspire to. Then, when weight loss happens, everyone can celebrate the accomplishment instead of being mad at the blatant hypocrisy.</p>

<p class="speakable">Tovar, author of &#8220;You Have the Right to Remain Fat&#8221; and a &#8220;DEI&#8221; professional, announced the position on her Instagram account on Monday.</p>

<p>Tovar is against so-called diet culture for the obese, rejects Ozempic, and believes that &#8220;no one has to be healthy.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;No one has to be healthy,&#8221; she said on a podcast. &#8220;Nobody owes anybody that.&#8221;</p>

<p>In a viral video narrated by Tovar, she explains why it&#8217;s &#8220;fatphobic&#8221; to ask for a small piece of cake at a party.</p>
<p>&#8220;And then it comes time to cut the cake and someone decides to ruin everything,&#8221; Tovar says in the video. &#8220;A cake-related fatphobic incident, or &#8216;CRFI,&#8217; is that moment when it&#8217;s time to eat delicious cake and it&#8217;s interrupted by a moralizing impulse.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Inevitably, there&#8217;s always someone at the party who has to declare publicly that their slice is too large, and that the person who&#8217;s cutting the cake &#8212; almost invariably a woman &#8212; must do some disproportionate amount of labor to fulfill their need to feel superior.&#8221;</p>
<p>Looking at such &#8220;incidents&#8221; through a &#8220;feminist&#8221; lens, Tovar argues that it&#8217;s also anti-feminist to ask for a small cake slice.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“It’s hard! Everyone is proud of you, but we already loved you, didn’t we? No matter what size, you’re still beautiful &amp; hilarious. Not everyone was meant to be a size 2. Certainly don’t feel BAD about it,” another person wrote.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Wilson previously said her team was not fully on board when she told them she was planning to lose weight. The actress had made a name for herself playing overweight characters in comedies at that point, like “Fat Amy” in the “Pitch Perfect” franchise, as The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/rebel-wilson-responds-to-accusations-of-fatphobia-for-lack-of-plus-sizes-in-new-clothing-line">reported</a>.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“I got a lot of pushback from my own team actually, here in Hollywood, when I said ‘Okay, I’m going to do this year of health, I feel like I’m really gonna physically transform and change my life,’” the “Bridesmaids” actress said during a 2021 interview with BBC.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“And they were like, ‘Why? Why would you wanna do that?’ Because I was earning millions of dollars being the funny fat girl and being that person,” she continued.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The actress said she worked on incorporating healthier habits during her “year of health” and stopping the use of food as a coping mechanism for difficult emotions. Wilson said she was also inspired by a fertility doctor who told her she would have an easier time getting pregnant if she lost weight.</span></p>

<p>Harvard University found itself in the social media crosshairs — over its own published policies — after university President Claudine Gay struggled to call out students who have joined protests calling for the genocide of Jews.</p>
<p>Gay joined leaders from other prestigious universities — such as University of Pennsylvania&#8217;s Elizabeth Magill — who had equal difficulty condemning students who called for Jewish genocide, claiming that &#8220;context&#8221; was necessary to determine whether such calls constituted &#8220;harassment&#8221; or &#8220;bullying.&#8221;</p>
<p>But as several people pointed out, Harvard&#8217;s Title IX training for undergraduate students warns them that comments that are intended to belittle other students could be considered abusive — and they could face disciplinary action for using such language.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A new study has found that obese people are at risk for being diagnosed with more <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/cancer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cancers</a> than previously thought.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Those with larger body mass index (BMI) measurements have been associated with 13 different types of cancer, but a </span><a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10313757/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">new study</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> published in Nature Communications shows that the number of cancers connected to obesity has grown to 18. Previously, obesity was linked to breast, bowel, pancreatic, and kidney cancers, but according to the new study, being overweight is linked to a number of other common cancers too.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“This study shows that longer duration, greater degree, and younger age of onset of overweight and obesity during early adulthood are positively associated with risk of 18 cancers, including leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and among never-smokers, head and neck, and bladder cancers which are not yet considered as obesity-related cancers in the literature,” the study’s authors wrote. “Our findings support public health strategies for cancer prevention focussing on preventing and reducing early overweight and obesity.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The study examined more than 2.6 million Spanish adults who were 40 or younger and cancer free in 2009, The Independent </span><a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/cancer-obesity-young-adult-leukaemia-b2370301.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">reported</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Those included in the study were observed for nine years and 225,396 of them were diagnosed with cancer. The study found that those who were obese in early adulthood appeared to have an increased risk of cancer, along with those who were obese for a longer period of time.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Dr. Heinz Freisling, one of the study&#8217;s co-authors, said medical professionals need to re-evaluate “the cancer burden associated with overweight and obesity, which currently is likely underestimated.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The findings linking obesity to more cancers come as “fat acceptance” becomes more mainstream in American culture. One author, Virginia Sole-Smith, even wrote a <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Fat-Talk-Parenting-Diet-Culture-ebook/dp/B0B1Y5TKLP">book</a> about de-stigmatizing obesity for children. In the book, Sole-Smith attempts to “debunk” the childhood obesity epidemic in the United States by arguing that society’s fear of fatness could be more detrimental than minors being overweight.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“The real danger to a child in a larger body is how we treat them for having that body,” she writes in “Fat Talk.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some elected officials have also pushed the idea that a person’s “body type&#8221; has no connection to their health. After signing a bill that prohibits discrimination on the basis of height and weight for employment, housing, and public accommodations in the city, New York City Democratic Mayor Eric Adams <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/eric-adams-signs-bill-banning-weight-discrimination-says-body-type-not-connected-to-whether-youre-healthy-or-unhealthy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">attempted to debunk</a> the scientifically proven reality that body type does affect a person’s health.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Everyone knows that I’m a person that believes in health, so when you talk about not discriminating against someone because of their body type, it’s not fighting against obesity; it’s just being fair,” the mayor said, adding, “And science has shown that body type is not a connection to if you are healthy or unhealthy. I think that’s a misnomer.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After reading the study, Dr. Panagiota Mitrou, director of research, policy, and innovation at the World Cancer Research Fund, remarked on the importance a person’s weight plays in their overall well-being. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Our own evidence shows that maintaining a healthy weight throughout life is one of the most important things people can do to reduce their cancer risk, and early prevention in adulthood is key,” Mitrou said.</span></p>

Obesity Linked To Increasing Number Of Cancers: Study

<p>The American Medical Association (AMA) is discouraging doctors from using only Body Mass Index (BMI) to measure whether a person is a healthy body weight because the system is &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/racism" target="_blank" rel="noopener">racist</a>.&#8221;</p>
<p>BMI has been widely used because it is easily measured, is inexpensive, and has specific cutoff points for the overweight and obese classifications, the AMA <a href="https://www.ama-assn.org/delivering-care/public-health/ama-use-bmi-alone-imperfect-clinical-measure" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a post on its website Wednesday.</p>
<p>However, BMI has been used for &#8220;racist exclusion&#8221; and has caused &#8220;historical harm,&#8221; the medical organization said.</p>
<p>The AMA&#8217;s House of Delegates adopted a <a href="https://www.ama-assn.org/press-center/press-releases/ama-adopts-new-policy-clarifying-role-bmi-measure-medicine" target="_blank" rel="noopener">new policy</a> this month recognizing the issues with using BMI.</p>
<p>&#8220;Under the newly adopted policy, the AMA recognizes issues with using BMI as a measurement due to its historical harm, its use for racist exclusion, and because BMI is based primarily on data collected from previous generations of non-Hispanic white populations,&#8221; the AMA said in a press release.</p>
<p>The new policy comes after the AMA Council on Science and Public Health presented a report addressing the BMI issues at the 2023 AMA Annual Meeting, which was held June 9 to 14 in Chicago.</p>
<p>There are other issues with the BMI system, too, the AMA said.</p>
<p>BMI is an &#8220;imperfect measure&#8221; because it does not directly assess body fat and is &#8220;misleading about the effects of body fat mass on mortality rates,&#8221; the AMA&#8217;s post said.</p>

<p>The BMI system also does not account for differences across the sexes, genders, and age-span, the new policy says.</p>
<p>“Further, the use of BMI is problematic when used to diagnose and treat individuals with eating disorders because it does not capture the full range of abnormal eating disorders,” the report said.</p>
<p>BMI should be used along with other measures like body composition, waist circumference, and genetic and metabolic factors, the new AMA policy <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/4054274-american-medical-association-says-use-of-bmi-metric-on-its-own-has-done-historical-harm/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">says</a>.</p>
<p>“There are numerous concerns with the way BMI has been used to measure body fat and diagnose obesity, yet some physicians find it to be a helpful measure in certain scenarios,” <a href="https://www.ama-assn.org/press-center/press-releases/ama-adopts-new-policy-clarifying-role-bmi-measure-medicine" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> AMA Immediate Past President Jack Resneck, Jr. M.D. “It is important for physicians to understand the benefits and limitations of using BMI in clinical settings to determine the best care for their patients.”</p>
<p>The AMA said it will support efforts to educate physicians on the issues with BMI and alternative measures for diagnosing obesity.</p>
<p>The AMA is the largest organization of doctors in the nation with more than 271,000 members.</p>
<p>In recent years, the body positivity and fat positivity movements have picked up steam in the U.S., arguing that obese people can be healthy.</p>
<p>Fat activists have rebelled against &#8220;diet culture&#8221; and made specific demands like free extra seats on airplanes to accommodate their size.</p>
<p>In December, Time Magazine <a href="https://time.com/6242949/exercise-industry-white-supremacy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published</a> an article titled, &#8220;The White Supremacist Origins of Exercise,&#8221; while Cosmopolitan&#8217;s February 2021 issue featured plus-sized models with the headline, &#8220;This is Healthy!&#8221;</p>
<p>Meanwhile, doctors have <a href="https://www.healthline.com/health/exercise-to-gain-weight" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pointed out</a> that weight gain doesn&#8217;t always correlate to fat gain. For example, some people who exercise will end up gaining muscle weight, which will add to their overall weight.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">De-stigmatizing obesity for kids may be the newest frontier of the fat acceptance movement.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At least, that’s the goal of author Virginia Sole-Smith. Her new book “Fat Talk: Parenting in the Age of Diet Culture” advocates for parents learning to embrace their overweight children just the way they are. She also believes in letting kids eat whatever they want, including candy and sweets, without forcing them to try vegetables or enjoy balanced meals of traditionally healthy foods.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The author, who describes herself as an “anti-diet journalist,” spoke with </span><a href="https://www.thecut.com/article/interview-virginia-sole-smith-parenting-fatphobia.html#comments" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Cut</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> about some of her thoughts on kids and diet. In the article titled “What If You Weren’t Scared of Your Kid Being Fat?” Sole-Smith said that one of the most common questions parents ask is how often their kids should be able to eat certain foods. Using the example of ice cream, she gave her usual response. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“There are seven days in a week. Your child can have ice cream seven days a week. There is no law against this,” she said, while insisting that if a parent inquired over their teenager asking for an entire box of Oreo cookies, her response would be, “Pour a glass of milk — so they can dunk them?”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The 41-year-old mother of two makes the argument that limiting certain foods just makes them more appealing to kids. Her approach assumes that children learn self-control by not having any rules at all, thereby making sugary treats less exciting. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Vegetables are the least important part of it to me,” she told the publication. “They have their whole lives to decide if they want to eat kale.” Sole-Smith also described some of the dinner rules at her house, which include, “No pressure/Listen to your body” and “You don’t have to earn dessert.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sole-Smith attempts to “debunk” the childhood obesity epidemic in the United States by arguing that society’s fear of fatness could be more detrimental than minors being overweight. “The real danger to a child in a larger body is how we treat them for having that body,” she writes in “Fat Talk.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The fat acceptance activist’s arguments are similar to those made by individuals promoting “transgender rights” for children. They say that kids should be able to tell us who they are, no matter how young they are. But these adults seem to ignore the fact that they are meant to be the ones in charge.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Children learn eating habits from their parents. Parents and other trusted adults have traditionally served as guides to show children how to exist in the world. Minors literally don’t have the mental capacity to understand the long-term effects of eating cookies for dinner every night. That’s why there are age restrictions on certain activities, such as getting tattoos and purchasing alcohol. It’s also why up until now, most everyone agreed that parents should promote good eating habits for their children. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sole-Smith thinks kids should be running the show and that everyone should be more accepting of overweight people because ultimately, their mental health trumps the physical risks of being obese. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Meanwhile, the </span><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/childhood.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">CDC</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> called childhood obesity a “serious problem” which leads to problems including “high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, breathing problems such as asthma and sleep apnea, and joint problems.” They reported that 19.7% of children aged 2 to 19 were classified as obese according to BMI charts. That’s 14.7 million children and adolescents who could face health problems due to their weight.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This week, Sole-Smith went on NPR’s “Fresh Air” podcast to promote her new book and further explain her pro-obesity stance. She said that the pursuit of weight loss is rooted in white supremacy.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“The thin ideal is definitely a white ideal. When we trace the history of modern diet culture, we really trace it back in the United States to the end of slavery,” Sole-Smith told host Tonya Mosley.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Obviously, white supremacy is trying to maintain the power structure. So celebrating a thin white body as the ideal body is a way to ‘other’ and demonize black and brown bodies, bigger bodies, anyone who doesn’t fit into that norm. So this is really about maintaining systems of white supremacy and patriarchy.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“If you can understand that, actually, by continuing to pursue thinness you are on some level, maintaining your complicity with white supremacy and patriarchy,” she continued.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sole-Smith said that fat people are discriminated against in the same way that other minority groups experience “racism or other forms of bias.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;We as a culture have really zeroed in on weight, because we think that&#8217;s the piece that we should be able to control. But not only do we not have very much control over weight, it also won&#8217;t fix anything else,&#8221; the author </span><a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2023/04/25/1171112216/fat-talk-diet-culture-parenting-kids-virginia-sole-smith" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">told</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> NPR. &#8220;All it really ends up doing is pathologizing kids&#8217; bodies and giving parents extra pressure and extra guilt and these sort of unrealistic standards we can&#8217;t get to.&#8221;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The author used to write weight loss stories for women’s magazines such as Glamour. Her perspective on childhood diets changed after her one-month-old daughter experienced medical trauma and had to be put on a feeding tube.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sole-Smith told The Cut that the ordeal led her to decide that “obsessing over it doesn’t fix it — it makes it worse.” Following that experience, the author decided to let her two children make their own nutrition choices. “It’s the power to say no, to be curious and try new things, and to decide when and how much they want to eat,” she explained of her approach.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As more and more people advocate for fat acceptance, it’s only a matter of time before activists decide that overweight kids existing on a diet of candy and soda should just be left to live as they please. Who are we to judge?</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400">“We’re going to continue to lean into the marketing spend to invest in the business, both at top-of-funnel and also to support the new version of our fashion show, which is to come later this year,” Chief Financial Officer Timothy Johnson <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/victorias-secret-announces-new-version-of-fashion-show-after-4-year-hiatus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">revealed</a> during the company’s 2022 earnings call on Friday.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">While details on the newest iteration of the runway show are not public yet, it’s clear that the brand has been embracing a variety of different models in recent years after facing criticism for not doing so in the past.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">“Fashion is a business of change. We must evolve and change to grow,” CEO Leslie Wexner said in 2019 while announcing the end of the fashion show. “With that in mind, we have decided to rethink the traditional Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.”</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Lizzo, meanwhile, has been at the forefront of the body positivity and body acceptance movement. As a plus-sized performer, the Detroit-born singer said she considers a person’s weight a personal matter. </span></p>

None of your f***ing business because I am beautiful, I am strong, I do my job, and I stay on my job,” the singer </span><a href="https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/lizzo-blasts-body-shamers-health" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400">asserted in 2020</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">“So next time you want to come to somebody and judge them whether they drink kale smoothies or eat McDonald’s, or work out or not work out, how about you look at your own f***ing self and worry about your own g** damn body because health is not just determined on what you look like on the outside,” she continued.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">“Health is also what happens on the inside and a lot of ya’ll need to do a f***ing cleanse for your insides,&#8221; Lizzo said at the time. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Mainstream critics are furious that a director would dare to portray obesity as a negative.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">They’ll never come out and say that explicitly. Instead, their reviews of “The Whale” starring Brendan Fraser are full of evasive criticism, claiming director Darren Aronofsky’s passion project is a “</span><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/10/opinion/the-whale-film.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">cruel spectacle</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">” and that it helps to “reinforce the dehumanizing ways in which many people understand fatness.” </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The movie portrays Fraser as a homebound 600-pound English teacher named Charlie who is slowly eating himself to death. It’s revealed that Charlie is depressed following the death of his partner and copes with his emotions by binge eating. Like the director’s previous effort “Requiem For A Dream,” the film explores the subject matter with an uncomfortable intensity.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But while Aronofsky insists he handled the character of Charlie with compassion, that’s not enough to assuage the critics who fear some viewers will see overeating as a vice and morbid obesity as less than ideal.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Fraser wears extensive body and facial prosthetics for his role. Aronofsky, who resists the use of the term “fat suit,” explores the reality of Charlie struggling to perform simple tasks while fat in a way that’s deemed “exploitative” and “voyeuristic.” Roxane Gay of </span><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/10/opinion/the-whale-film.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The New York Times</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> called it “gratuitous, self-aggrandizing fiction” that was barely a step above the films of decades past that used fat suit clad actors as a punchline.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“The disdain the filmmakers seem to have for their protagonist is constant, inescapable,” Gay writes in her review. She recalled being personally offended by the subject matter considering that she too is gay and fat. For that reason, the NYT writer resents how obesity is portrayed as “the ultimate human failure, something despicable, to be avoided at all costs.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“A movie like this will only reinforce the dehumanizing ways in which many people understand fatness,” Gay concludes. “It’s a carnival sideshow. Come look at the freak, the movie beckons.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some critics also took issue with the intimate depictions of Charlie binge eating. They couldn’t believe Aronofsky would dare to explore the specific actions that led to the character’s health failure and eventual death.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In one scene, Charlie is shown gorging himself on greasy pizza that’s smeared all over his face even as he flings open the refrigerator door searching for more. Another clip shows the character wolfing down a bucket of fried chicken. His clothing is described by one reviewer as “tent-like … threadbare, perpetually soaked in sweat” only highlighting “the rolls of his stomach spilling over his thighs.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A reviewer from </span><a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/elaminabdelmahmoud/the-whale-brendan-fraser-darren-aronofsky-review" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Buzzfeed News</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> criticizes the binge scenes as well, writing, “the score swells while Charlie reaches for a pizza and candy bars, and we’re forced to watch him wheeze, sweat, and beg for forgiveness for his mistakes — the foremost of which, the film illustrates, is his obesity.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">They chastise Aronofsky for “treating [Charlie] like an imposing monster in his own horror film rather than a human being.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“You can’t really make a feel-good body-horror movie,” David Sims of The Atlantic declared.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Podcaster Aubrey Gordon, who is fat, also laments the reality that “The Whale” forces audiences to face, namely that being obese can be a symptom of deeper psychological issues and that it’s statistically likely to lead to an early death.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“The number of people who describe this premise as ‘humanizing’ is so disheartening,” she </span><a href="https://twitter.com/yrfatfriend/status/1567919961787740169" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">shared</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> on Twitter. “If the only way you can ‘humanize’ a very fat person is to watch them humiliated, terrified, ashamed &amp; killed off in a stereotypically stigmatizing way, it&#8217;s time to do some serious reflecting.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The controversy of actors wearing fat suits also came up during most reviews. While this tactic was often employed for comedic value in the past, (think “The Nutty Professor” and “Shallow Hal”), it’s since become a lot more thoughtful and intentional if it’s used at all. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Besides some mainstream actors coming out against fat suits, the Buzzfeed News writer said “the major Hollywood studio roles for fat people, or queer people, or trans people come along so rarely that it feels doubly insulting to then have actors of those communities miss out amid a drought of those roles.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The director has </span><a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/makes-no-sense-the-whale-director-responds-to-critics-of-brendan-fraser-wearing-a-fat-suit" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">addressed criticism</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> over his selection of Fraser for the lead role rather than an obese gay actor that would match the character he created. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;Actors have been using makeup since the beginning of acting — that&#8217;s one of their tools,&#8221; Aronofsky told Yahoo News. &#8220;And the lengths we went to to portray the realism of the make-up has never been done before. One of my first calls after casting Brendan was to my makeup artist, Adrien Morot. I asked him, &#8216;Can we do something that&#8217;s realistic?&#8217; Because if it&#8217;s going to look like a joke, then we shouldn&#8217;t do it.&#8221;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;People with obesity are generally written as bad guys or as punchlines,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;We wanted to create a fully worked-out character who has bad parts about him and good parts about him; Charlie is very selfish, but he&#8217;s also full of love and is seeking forgiveness. So [the controversy] makes no sense to me. Brendan Fraser is the right actor to play this role, and the film is an exercise in empathy.&#8221;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Fraser also takes the role seriously and never makes a mockery of Charlie. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;Charlie is not the person he presents,&#8221; Fraser </span><a href="https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/brendan-fraser-says-that-his-kids-inspired-his-transformative-performance-in-the-whale-181128097.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">said</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> of the character. &#8220;He&#8217;s not the person who we so often dismiss. He&#8217;s a man who lives with obesity, but he&#8217;s also a father and he&#8217;s also a teacher. He&#8217;s someone who can bring out the best in others even when they can&#8217;t see that in themselves. Tragically, he can&#8217;t do that for himself.&#8221;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;It&#8217;s well-rounded character,&#8221; the actor insists. &#8220;The empathy that I think we all felt shooting this movie and telling Sam Hunter&#8217;s story is something that&#8217;s intensely personal to all of us.&#8221;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In subsequent conversations about the role, Fraser pointed out that his weight has fluctuated over the years and also that he has a son who’s fat. The actor believes these truths should afford him the right to take on the role of Charlie.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Aronofsky even enlisted professionals to ensure he was handling the subject matter carefully. The director hired members of the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) to consult on the script and ensure Fraser was realistically portraying a morbidly obese person.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The organization shared in a written statement that they were “honored” to work on the film “A24 approached us with the opportunity to offer the production team and the film&#8217;s lead actor, Brendan Fraser, insight into the realities of living with severe obesity,” the statement said. “Our goal was to make sure the representation of severe obesity was realistic and respectful — not the caricature we so often see in movies or television shows.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While “The Whale” has been slammed for portraying obesity as a less-than-desirable health condition that will lead to an early death, enough critics appreciated Fraser’s performance to score him some notable recognition. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So far, the 54-year-old actor was just nominated for a Best Actor Golden Globe and is considered a frontrunner for the Best Actor Oscar Award in 2023.</span></p>

But he didn’t apologize, backtrack, or say bodies can be healthy at every size, which is a common talking point from the fat acceptance movement.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The trainer said he wasn’t “body shaming” women with his post, saying instead that activewear companies that “promote obesity” should be the focus of everyone’s anger.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“I’ve done a bit of a scan of all the crazy DMs and got a bit of an overview of what people were saying,” the reality show star said in a follow-up post. “And what people were saying was ‘what are people supposed to wear in the gym if they can’t promote overweight activewear.’”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Hey – clothes? It’s just the gym. It’s just a bunch of metal objects that you pick up. You don’t necessarily need to wear a particular brand of clothing to do that,” he continued. “That’s not the issue, it’s when brands start to cater to unhealthy body types — my concern is where does that lead?”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Holmes also said his comments should be received “with compassion” because he knows losing weight can be challenging.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“I understand it is quite difficult to lose weight. The steps in order to do it are relatively simple but to execute it is pretty difficult&#8230; I worked in the fitness industry for close to 10 years and it isn&#8217;t a new subject to me,” he said.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The “MAFS” star concluded by slamming brands that promote “unhealthy” body types to make money, which is what he believes Nike is doing with the mannequins. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“When we have brands that essentially promote this idea to make money, yes, I have an issue with that,” Holmes said.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The comments were flooded with criticism from followers who thought people of all sizes should exercise in Nike activewear. They also called out the reality star for his past steroid use. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“It&#8217;s a bit rich preaching about healthy lifestyles etc when you have abused steroids don&#8217;t you think?” one person replied. </span></p>
