Republicans &#8220;seem to be uniting behind Trump&#8221; as he faces multiple prosecutions while seeking another term in the White House and &#8220;whatever opposition he faced in the primaries has largely melted away,&#8221; Zakaria said on &#8220;GPS,&#8221; his Sunday morning show that airs on CNN.
&#8220;And the trials against him keep him in the spotlight, infuriate his base who sees him as a martyr, and even may serve to make him the object of some sympathy among people in general who believed that his prosecutors are politically motivated,&#8221; Zakaria added.
&#8220;This happens to be true in my opinion,&#8221; Zakaria continued. &#8220;I doubt the New York indictment would have been brought against a defendant whose name was not Donald Trump. A majority of Americans are skeptical that Trump will be able to get a fair trial, according to a CNN poll.&#8221;

In a case brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Trump faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to allegedly cover up payments, including to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, in a bid to conceal damaging information as part of a “catch-and-kill” scheme to influence the 2016 election.
Trump has pleaded not guilty and criticized what he says is a &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/michael-avenatti-claims-he-is-willing-to-testify-in-trump-hush-money-trial" target="_blank" rel="noopener">political persecution</a>.&#8221; The trial is ongoing. The former president is facing three other criminal matters on the state and federal levels as he runs for re-election and has insisted that he is innocent throughout the process.

CNN&#8217;s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/fareed-zakaria" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fareed Zakaria</a> said during an interview this week that President Joe Biden needed to abandon what he is doing on the border and he needs to follow what former President Donald Trump did on border policy.
Zakaria made the remarks during an interview that airs on PBS&#8217; &#8220;Firing Line with Margaret Hoover,&#8221; which airs on Friday.
He said that Biden didn&#8217;t do anything on the border during his first years in office because &#8220;he wasn&#8217;t taking it seriously enough&#8221; as millions of illegals stormed the southern border.
&#8220;And the reason was he felt he had a progressive wing within his party that wouldn&#8217;t listen to reason,&#8221; he claimed. &#8220;People are coming in, aided by cartels to whom they pay huge amounts of money, and they&#8217;re not running away from law enforcement. They&#8217;re running towards law enforcement because they have figured out that all they have to do is say the magic words, ‘I have a credible fear of persecution,’ and bingo, you&#8217;re in the country legally. You get two court hearings. They could take seven years. Meanwhile, you slip into the shadows of the economy. So the whole system is broken.&#8221;
&#8220;And Biden needs to confront that and say, you know, ‘We are going to have to reform the whole system,'&#8221; he said. &#8220;I would wish he&#8217;d do something much more extreme, like, say the old asylum system is dead. No one is coming in through that process. You have to apply from your home country.&#8221;
Zakaria noted that was a Trump policy, as was his Remain in Mexico policy, which forced migrants to wait in Mexico if they wanted to apply for asylum.
&#8220;I think that&#8217;s all correct,&#8221; Zakaria said.
Hoover followed up by asking: &#8220;So strategically, you think if Biden would tack towards Trump policies, he would have a better political chance?&#8221;

CNN&#8217;s Fareed Zakaria blasted woke universities during his show on Sunday for their &#8220;long misadventure&#8221; into politics, saying that they needed to get back to focusing on research and learning and abandon their diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
Zakaria&#8217;s segment on the network&#8217;s &#8220;Fareed Zakaria GPS&#8221; came within the context of three ivy league presidents who struggled during their testimonies before U.S. Congress last week to say that calling for the genocide of Jews on college campuses would violate their respective schools&#8217; policies.
&#8220;To understand their performance, we have to understand the broad shift that has taken place at elite universities which have gone from being centers of excellence to institutions pushing political agendas,&#8221; he said as he then proceeded to talk about statistics that show America&#8217;s souring views on higher education.
&#8220;American universities have been neglecting a call focused on excellence in order to pursue a variety of agendas, many of them clustered around diversity and inclusion,&#8221; he said, adding that the shift has &#8220;turned these universities into places where the pervasive goals of political and social engineering, not academic merit.&#8221;
He ripped schools for insisting on becoming even more woke and for discriminating against white people. He also mocked those who &#8220;major in diversity, equity and inclusion,&#8221; noting that it was not an &#8220;academic field.&#8221;
&#8220;The most obvious lack of diversity at universities, political diversity, which clearly affects their ability to analyze many issues, is never addressed, showing that these goals are not centrally related to achieving or sustaining or building excellence,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Out of this culture of diversity has grown the collection of ideas and practices that we have now all heard of, safe spaces, trigger warnings, microaggressions.&#8221;
&#8220;Universities advise students not to speak, act, even dress in ways that might cause offense to some minority groups,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;With this culture of virtue signaling growing, the George Floyd protests erupted and many universities latched on and issued statements effectively aligning their institutions with these protests. By my memory, few took such steps even after 9/11 or during the Iraq war.&#8221;
&#8220;America&#8217;s top colleges are no longer seen as bastions of excellence but partisan outfits which means they will keep getting buffeted by these political storms as they emerge,&#8221; he later added. &#8220;They should abandon this long misadventure into politics, retrain their gaze on their core strengths, and rebuild their reputations as centers of research and learning.&#8221;

As Americans find it harder and harder to purchase Christmas gifts, replace broken appliances, or eat at their favorite restaurant because of the ever-emptying store shelves and ever-increasing prices, CNN commentator Fareed Zakaria claimed that the U.S. labor shortage is “just the kind of chaos the American economy needs.”
While Zakaria cited an economist who argued the lack of shortage is actually a good thing for the U.S. economy, economic data show the massive dearth of workers has raised prices, curtail services, and further stressed Americans who stayed at their jobs.
“Welcome to Strike-tober,” <a href="https://transcripts.cnn.com/show/fzgps/date/2021-10-24/segment/01">said</a> Fareed Zakaria on Sunday — using a term coined by labor unions to celebrate the mass walkouts that have idled factories in the midst of a global supply chain crisis. “Last week 10,000 workers of the farm equipment manufacturer John Deere went on strike … [and] 1,400 workers at Kellogg&#8217;s have been striking for weeks,” he said. Zakaria did not mention that the strikes <a href="https://apnews.com/article/kelloggs-cereal-plants-strike-d9185eb8fa9054d34a078063c3db6c33">halted</a> production at <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/10/15/1046519755/more-than-10-000-factory-workers-for-farm-equipment-maker-john-deere-are-on-stri">both</a> companies, leaving farmers scrambling for equipment and <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/business/business-news/john-deere-strike-and-supply-chain-woes-has-farmers-worried-rcna3207">paying tens of thousands of dollars more</a> for used tractors than in years past.
But the U.S. shortage, which resulted in <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/jolts.nr0.htm">10.4 million unfilled jobs</a>, goes beyond organized labor to throngs of Americans temporarily quitting their jobs or permanently leaving the workforce.
“Most workers in the U.S. are not unionized, so they may not be inclined to organize a strike. But that doesn&#8217;t mean they can&#8217;t walk off their jobs,” said Zakaria. “Since April, an average of about four million workers have quit their jobs every month. It is a trend economists have called the Great Resignation.”
August’s “quit rate” of <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/10/20/global-shortage-of-workers-whats-going-on-experts-explain.html">4.3 million</a> people is the highest in at least two decades, and <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/10/20/6-reasons-why-americans-arent-returning-to-work.html?recirc=taboolainternal">3.6 million</a> more unemployed Americans say they are not looking for a job compared to pre-pandemic levels.
That has significantly impacted employees, the employers who pay them, and the consumers who buy their products. Americans who have not taken part in the Great Resignation must work longer, and harder, to pick up the slack for an understaffed business.
The average worker in manufacturing works nearly an hour-and-a-half more overtime now compared to last April. Meanwhile, many businesses are closing early or not opening one or more days a week due to staffing shortages: <a href="https://www.bridgemi.com/business-watch/most-michigan-restaurants-cut-hours-summer-due-staff-shortages">80%</a> of restaurants closed early in Michigan over the summer due to a lack of workers, according to a survey from the <a href="https://www.mrla.org/">Michigan Restaurant &amp; Lodging Association</a>
Zakaria said the worker shortage is “actually good news,” because it lets workers demand higher wages.
“Low-skilled American workers … make almost one-third less per hour than their counterparts in Canada,” Zakaria said — without mentioning that the total tax burden in Canada is far higher in the United States. The combined marginal tax rate for workers making $50,000 Canadian ($40,500 U.S.) is higher in any Canadian province than in all 50 U.S. states, according to a 2020 <a href="https://www.fraserinstitute.org/sites/default/files/canadas-rising-personal-tax-rates-and-failing-tax-competitiveness-2020.pdf">study</a> from Canada’s Fraser Institute.
Economic data show that higher wages have not attracted enough job applicants. Instead, in numerous industries hourly wages rose, employment fell, and the price charged to consumers rose. The Wall Street Journal <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/labor-shortage-missing-workers-jobs-pay-raises-economy-11634224519">reported</a>:
<blockquote>Nationwide, employment at restaurants and bars was down by 930,500 jobs, or 7.6%, in September from February 2020; hourly pay was up 12.7% between February 2020 and August 2021. … Restaurant meals were 7.3% more expensive in September than in February 2020. … 
Hotels employed about 290,000 fewer people in August than in the month before the pandemic, a drop of 17%, and were paying the employees they had an average of $20.83 an hour in August, up 13.3% since before the pandemic.</blockquote>
Yet Zakaria contended that America is on the right track economically. “So, Striketober — terrible word — and the Great Resignation may look chaotic, but this is just the kind of chaos the American economy needs,” Zakaria <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NY5uP-fbsQM">concluded</a>.

CNN&#8217;s Fareed Zakaria said during his most recent broadcast of &#8220;Fareed Zakaria GPS&#8221; that President Donald Trump is right when it comes to the problems that the United States is facing with asylum abuse.
Zakaria, who opened the segment by noting that he was not a fan of Trump, said, &#8220;It pains me to say this, but he is right, that the United States faces a crisis with its asylum system.&#8221;
&#8220;Democrats might hope that the out-of-control situation at the southern border undermines Trump&#8217;s image among his base as a tough guy who can tackle immigration,&#8221; Zakaria said. &#8220;But they should be careful. It could actually work to the president&#8217;s advantage.&#8221;
&#8220;Since 2014, the flow of asylum seekers into the United States has skyrocketed,&#8221; Zakaria continued. &#8220;Last year, immigration courts received 162,000 asylum claims. A 240 percent increase from 2014. The result is a staggering backlog with more than 300,000 asylum cases pending and the average immigration case has been pending for more than 700 days. It&#8217;s also clear that the rules surrounding asylum are vague, lax and being gamed.&#8221;
&#8220;The initial step for many asylum seekers is to convince officers that they have a credible fear of persecution in their home countries,&#8221; Zakaria added. &#8220;And about 75 percent meet that criteria. Some applicants for asylum have suspiciously similar stories using identical phrases. Many simply use the system to enter the U.S. and then melt into the shadows or gain a work permit while their application is pending.&#8221;
Zakaria noted that asylum is supposed to be for &#8220;a very small number of people in extreme circumstances&#8221; and that the definition has become very loose over time and that is a major factor that is contributing to the number of people flooding the U.S. border.
&#8220;The criteria for asylum need to be rewritten and substantially tightened. The number of courts and officials dealing with asylum must be massively expanded,&#8221; Zakaria added. &#8220;People should not be able to use asylum claims as a way to work in America. There needs to be a much greater cooperation with the home countries of these applicants rather than insults, threats and aid freezes.&#8221;
&#8220;If things continue to spiral downward and America&#8217;s southern border seems out of control, Trump&#8217;s tough rhetoric and hard line stance will become increasingly attractive to the public,&#8221; Zakaria concluded. &#8220;Keep in mind, that the rise of populism in the Western world is almost everywhere tied to fears of growing out of control immigration.&#8221;

CNN’s Fareed Zakaria Makes Surprising Comments About Trump’s Remarks On Asylum

In a Sunday-aired interview with Hillary Clinton, CNN&#8217;s Fareed Zakaria suggested that the political opinions of &#8220;white women&#8221; in America are primarily motivated by two considerations: race and sex. 
&#8220;You lost the white women vote. Do you think white women in America voted their race over their gender?&#8221; asked Zakaria, framing the demographic group as politically homogenous.
Clinton seemingly accepted Zakaria&#8217;s premise, suggesting that sexual solidarity is not a politically unifying force among women the way that race is among minorities who support Democrats:

I do think that gender has not become a political mobilizing factor the way that race has, and the way that I think President Obama almost transcended it, and, you know, was able to be elected twice. I think that gender is still a challenge in the political arena.

HBO host Bill Maher appeared Sunday on CNN&#8217;s GPS, where he told anchor Fareed Zakaria that he hopes the stock market will crash under President Donald Trump. 
Speaking in a pre-recorded interview, the left-wing comedian said he wanted a crash so that it would hurt the reputation of Trump. After that, he repeated the long-disproven myth that President Ronald Reagan launched his 1980 presidential campaign in Philadelphia, Mississippi, as a way to pander to racists living in the area.
Maher told Zakaria, &#8220;I thought he would crash the stock market, and I still think he will. I&#8217;m hoping actually because that&#8217;s one thing that would maybe lose him a lot of support in the Republican party. But I thought and predicted, and I was wrong, that the stock market hates volatility and uncertainty. And who is more volatile than Donald Trump? But I guess I underestimated their greed because they still want their tax cut.&#8221;
The stock market crash in 2007 ruined lives and caused countless hard-working men and women to lose their homes. Zakaria did not point that out or challenge any of the vulgur comedian&#8217;s points.
Maher continued, &#8220;It&#8217;s almost a protest vote, you know. I&#8217;m not surprised because there are &#8230; now, there is a certain percentage of people who are, I think, racist, and that&#8217;s part of his appeal. And, you know, his dog whistle was louder than any dog whistle we&#8217;ve heard, and the Republicans have been playing that game since Nixon and the Southern Strategy, and Reagan opening his campaign in Philadelphia, Mississippi. That&#8217;s been going on a long time, but he just did it in a much more blatant way, so he can&#8217;t deny that that&#8217;s part of it.&#8221;

Reducing America&#8217;s intake of &#8220;refugees&#8221; is &#8220;both immoral and cruel,&#8221; said The Atlantic&#8217;s Julia Ioffe during a Sunday-aired segment on CNN&#8217;s GPS.
Neither GPS host Fareed Zakaria nor Ioffe&#8217;s fellow guest panelists &#8212; Gideon Rose and Dan Senor &#8212; challenged Ioffe&#8217;s moral assessment of Trump&#8217;s proposals to restrict refugee admissions. Not a word was said of Islamic terrorism and its overlap with Muslims; also unmentioned were today&#8217;s primary sources of ostensible refugees: failed Muslim-majority states such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen.
Muslims compose the majority of contemporarily labeled refugees; a fact unmentioned by Zakaria or his GPS guests. Alternative resettlement options for Muslim refugees within the Middle East or North Africa were also ignored by Zakaria and his guests.
Ioffe suggested that &#8220;racism&#8221; was motivating the Trump administration&#8217;s proposed changes to immigration and refugee admission policies, describing the policies as &#8220;demographic engineering.&#8221;
Melania Trump is &#8220;the right kind of immigrant&#8221; in the eyes of Trump&#8217;s supporters, said Ioffe, describing the first lady as a &#8220;beautiful white woman from Europe.&#8221; Zakaria grinned in agreement with Ioffe&#8217;s assessment (he regularly frames those who voted for Donald Trump as angry and poorly educated white racists.)
&#8220;English is a pretty easy language to learn,&#8221; claimed Ioffe in criticizing proposals to mandate English language proficiency for prospective immigrants. &#8220;I think most people could pick it up in a few months.&#8221;

“People who engage in acts of terrorism … have nothing to do with Islam,” said Iran’s Foreign Minister Javad Zarif during a Sunday-aired interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria on GPS.
Zarif would not describe the Islamic State (ISIS) as connected to Islam or Muslims:
<blockquote>&#8220;We know where the terrorists are coming from. We know those who attacked the World Trade Center were citizens of which countries in the region — I can tell you that none of them came from Iran. None of the people who engaged in acts of terrorism since 2001 came from Iran; most of them came from U.S. allies.
I believe the ideology that is being spread by, unfortunately by our neighbors in Saudi Arabia — througout the world is responsible for hatred, for extremism, and for fanaticism that is bring such a dark page of people who having nothing to do with Islam into our region, and even beyond our region. Look at ISIS, look at al-Nusra, look at al-Qaeda, look at other terrorist organizations — none of them have anything to do with Iran. All of them receive not only their ideology but their financial assistance, their weapons, their arms from others who call themselves U.S. allies.&#8221;</blockquote>

He neglected to note the Iranian government&#8217;s material and political support for Islamic terrorism across the Middle East, North Africa and beyond; no mention was made of Hezbollah (who Zakaria was previously extolled), Hamas, or governments in failed Muslim-majority states such as Syria.
CNN&#8217;s chyrons were sterile, a departure from the network&#8217;s approach to President Donald Trump and his administration:

Zakaria did not provide any evidence of Trump framing Western civilization in racial or tribal terms.

Trump&#8217;s remarks in the Polish capital included 15 references to &#8220;freedom,&#8221; one reference to the &#8220;rule of law,&#8221; and an indirect reference to democracy (&#8220;democratic Europe&#8221;); contrary to Zakaria&#8217;s false assertion.

&#8220;Culture,&#8221; according Zakaria, is somehow akin to &#8220;religion, race, and tribe.&#8221; He also drew a false delineation between aggregate culture and specific cultural values such as democracy, liberty, and the rule of law.

None of the segment&#8217;s panelists corrected Zakaria&#8217;s false statements.

Zakaria regularly frames &#8220;racism&#8221; as a widespread social force in contemporary America. Two days before last year&#8217;s presidential election, he <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/10536/zakarias-last-hurrah-trumps-core-can-only-be-robert-kraychik">described</a> Trump&#8217;s &#8220;core beliefs&#8221; as &#8220;racist.&#8221; CNN similarly frames &#8220;racism&#8221; as a common American characteristic across much of its programming, essentially associating it with conservative, libertarian, and right-wing dissidents.

Left-wing and Democrat-aligned news media figures widely derided Trump&#8217;s call for the defense of Western values as offensively bigoted; The Atlantic&#8216;s Peter Beinart framed &#8220;The West&#8221; as a &#8220;<a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2017/07/trump-speech-poland/532866/">racial and religious term</a>.&#8221;

Democrats have won the national debate on economic issues, declared CNN&#8217;s Fareed Zakaria on Sunday&#8217;s GPS.

Zakaria cited polls conducted by left-wing advocacy organizations as evidence of his claim:

In one recent poll, 3 in 4 supported raising the <a href="http://thehill.com/homenews/335837-poll-bipartisan-majority-supports-raising-minimum-wage">minimum wage</a> to $9. 72% wanted to provide pre-K to all 4-year-olds in poor families. Eight in ten <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2017/05/25/hard-working-taxpayers-dont-support-big-cuts-to-food-stamps-it-turns-out/?utm_term=.ec2a30ee4ca6">favored</a> expanding food stamps. It is noteworthy that each of these proposals <a href="http://www.publicconsultation.org/federal-budget/americans-support-greater-federal-efforts-to-reduce-poverty/">found support</a> from a majority of <a href="http://www.gallup.com/poll/210725/democratic-party-image-dips-gop-ratings-stable.aspx">Republicans</a>.

Zakaria advised Democrats to adjust their messaging &#8212; but not policies &#8212; toward non-overtly economic issues to improve his party&#8217;s political fortunes: &#8220;The Democrats need to talk about America&#8217;s national identity in a way that stresses the common elements that bind, not the particular ones that divide.&#8221; No comments were offered on Democratic narrative fomenting division across the lines of race, ethnicity, religion, sex, income, or wealth.

&#8220;Minorities,&#8221; suggested Zakaria, are inherently threatened and need protection from American society: &#8220;[The Democratic Party&#8217;s] defense of minorities and celebration of diversity are genuine and praiseworthy.&#8221;

Using the nonsense term &#8220;gay rights,&#8221; Zakaria described Democrat support for redefining marriage and family as &#8220;progressive&#8221; and &#8220;admirable.&#8221;

Expressing contempt for the American electorate, Zakaria described their political considerations (particularly among those who voted for Donald Trump) as grounded in superficial considerations:

The more I study this subject, the more I am convinced that people cast their vote mostly based on an emotional bond with a candidate, a sense that they get each other. Democrats have to recognize this. They should always stay true to their ideals, of course, but yet convey to a broad section of Americans &#8212; rural, less-educated, older, whiter &#8212; that they understand and respect their lives, their values and their worth. It&#8217;s a much harder balancing act than one more push to raise the minimum wage. But this cultural realm is the crossroads of politics today.

&#8220;Working class whites,&#8221; said Zakaria <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/11304/zakaria-working-class-whites-vote-emotion-not-robert-kraychik">last December</a>, voted based on &#8220;emotional,&#8221; not &#8220;rational,&#8221; considerations. He did not define &#8220;working class whites.&#8221;

CNN&#8217;s Fareed Zakaria invited David Brooks to explain contemporary conservatism in the era of President Donald Trump, describing the left-wing columnist for The New York Times as a &#8220;conservative intellectual.&#8221;
The debate between &#8220;big government versus small government,&#8221; said Brooks, is passé; being supplanted by a new debate: opposition versus support for globalization.

Brooks neglected to define globalization or articulate its primary effects on its detractors and/or supporters. Zakaria similarly neglected to offer any analysis of contemporary globalization.

Neither Brooks nor Zakaria spoke of cultural change wrought by the era of mass migration to America and the broader West; no commentary was offered on the natures of new cohorts of foreigners and their compatibility with the American ethos. Also ignored were contemporary policies and informal attitudes toward cultural integration of foreigners, and how they have changed over decades.

No examination was offered by either Brooks or Zakaria of contemporary conservatism&#8217;s resistance toward expanding state controls over human behavior in both the social and economic spheres. No words were spoken on the values of freedom of speech and expression; property rights; a civil society independent of government controls; growing cultural apprehension under &#8220;political correctness&#8221;; left-wing corruption of academia, the news media, and entertainment; or other conservative concerns.

Referencing the thesis of Thomas Kuhn&#8217;s <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Structure-Scientific-Revolutions-Thomas-Kuhn/dp/0226458083">The Structure of Scientific Revolutions</a>, Brooks framed political paradigms as intermittently experiencing major shifts over time:

&#8220;You get a paradigm, you get a way of looking at the world. Reaganism, that was a paradigm. It works for a little while and then slowly it detached from reality, and it&#8217;s hollow but nobody knows it. Somebody comes along, punctures it, and it collapses. And that&#8217;s what Trump did to Reaganism.&#8221;
</blockquote>
Neither Brooks nor Zakaria acknowledged an essentialist view of the human condition or of human nature, or of ideological predicates related to perceptions of the human condition or human nature. Zakaria accepted Brooks&#8217; reframing of Kuhn&#8217;s historical analysis of scientific paradigm shifts as applicable to politics.

Brooks linked economic dynamism to the status quo of mass migration, suggesting the two were somehow interconnected:

&#8220;I would like an Alexander Hamilton [style of conservatism] &#8212; open trade, a lot of immigration, a lot of economic dynamism. &#8230; The Steve Bannons of the world, that&#8217;s where a lot of the people are. They&#8217;re older, they&#8217;re economically disadvantaged, and they want a national conservatism that will protect them.&#8221;
</blockquote>
Americans who support Trump do so on superficial and racial grounds, said Brooks, dismissing the political acumen of Republican voters:

<blockquote>
&#8220;A lot of suburban women in Missouri looked around and said, &#8220;Sarah Palin, she&#8217;s kinda like me.&#8221; And whether Sarah Palin believed in high tax rates or low tax rates, or health insurance markets or some other health care policy, that&#8217;s not what they were thinking about. They were thinking about, &#8220;Who&#8217;s like me?&#8221; And for a lot of people in the Republican Party, which is older, whiter, and less educated at the core, Trump was like them.&#8221;
