<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In December 1914, an observer flying over Western Europe would have gazed down at a most striking, and sinister, topographical feature. Two chains of deep trenches and concertinas of barbed wire slithered in snake-like patterns as far as the eye could see from the English Channel to the Swiss Alps, slicing an unsightly laceration across the blasted out fields of northern France and Belgium.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Hunkered down within these subterranean troughs amid the stench of feces, urine, decaying flesh and gun smoke, squatted the great armies of the Western Front. They glared at each other across a moonscape of water-logged shell craters, trees blown into twisted matchsticks silhouetted against a bleak sky, and grotesquely decomposing bodies of friend and foe alike left to ignominiously rot out in the “no-man’s land” between the lines.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The big guns to the rear lobbed their deadly payloads down onto bewildered youths, many in their teens, just struggling to survive this eerily troglodytic existence; one that, considering their innocence of life just the year before, must have seemed like a nightmare from which they could not stir.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The war, just five months in, had begun as a conflict of mobility, when in August the Kaiser’s armies, distinct in their steel gray long coats and spiked pickelhaube helmets, confidently marched through Belgium to strike at the French in a drive towards Paris and victory. But the poilus and their British Expeditionary Force (BEF) allies rallied at the Marne, just 30 miles from the French capital, and threw the Germans back in a bloodletting that shocked the world.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A series of failed attempts to outflank the other sent casualties on both sides soaring, but no breakthroughs were made, and the front stabilized. In a very short time the troops settled in, burrowing deep into the ground to escape the killing power of the new technological age of machine guns and fast-firing artillery. And there they remained, stagnant, immobile, rain soaked, miserable.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And yet even in the trenches, the very monument to man’s savagery and folly, hopeful demonstrations of the better angels of our nature could occur. And so it was on Christmas 1914, that one of the most poignant scenes in the history of warfare took place.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While the men of the BEF settled into their trenches to try and celebrate the holiday as best they could, strange sounds began to drift over from the German lines. Singing. “Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht / Alles schläft; einsam wacht …”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">British Private Frank Sumter recalled: “And then we heard the Germans singing ‘Silent Night, Holy Night.’ And our boys said ‘Let’s join in.’ So we joined in with the song.” At first, the British sentries weren’t sure what to make of the German activity, which included lighting festive candles on the rim of their trenches. Nervous Tommies peeked their heads up over the parapets then quickly ducked back down for fear of snipers.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But no one shot.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Pvt. Leslie Walkington remembered the extraordinary event that followed. “And then we saw a German standing up, waving his arms. And we didn’t shoot.” Instead of a battle cry, the Germans were calling out to their British Kameraden to have a truce and celebrate Christmas together. The men on both sides of the lines eventually overcame their suspicions and climbed out of their trenches. They met out in the open, offering enemies not the cold steel of thrusting bayonets, but rather the warm flesh of extended hands.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A German Lieutenant Neimann picked up his binoculars and to his surprise &#8220;saw the incredible sight of our soldiers exchanging cigarettes, schnapps and chocolate with the enemy!&#8221;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There is a commonality among soldiers that transcends national politics or flag. By this time in the war, both sides had shared the same experiences of chronic fear, physical misery and illness, filth, mourning lost friends, and homesickness. The truce extended to parts of the French sector as well. Gustave Berthier wrote to his parents, &#8220;On Christmas Day the Boches made a sign showing they wished to speak to us. They said they didn&#8217;t want to shoot. &#8230; They were tired of making war, they were married like me.&#8221;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A common legend of the Christmas Truce of 1914 has it that the enemy combatants engaged in impromptu games of football (soccer) in the “no-man’s land” but some historians dispute the legitimacy of such claims. Although, given the Christmas miracle that occurred right in the middle of a war so terrible that author William Manchester described it as “the worst thing that had ever happened” it is not out of the question.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One can imagine the words of Thomas Hardy’s poem “The Man He Killed” on the minds of every soldier no matter the uniform, on this most magical of Christmases at the front:</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />

</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Had he and I but met</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">By some old ancient inn,</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />

</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Right many a nipperkin!</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">But ranged as infantry</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">And staring face to face,</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">I shot at him as he at me</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">And killed him in his place…</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />

</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Yes; quaint and curious a thing war is!</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For nearly two and a half billion Christians of every race and nationality across the globe, Christmas is a joyous celebration of the birth of Our Lord, now two millennia in the past, and yet still so powerful in its meaning and presence in our lives. One hundred ten years ago, in the middle of a grisly battlefield, in the middle of a ghastly war, the love of Christ and the affection He wishes us to bestow upon each other was alive and well amidst a scene of unprecedented violence and suffering. Indeed, on this day, at this time, enemies could lay down their arms, exchange warm greetings and gifts, and, if for a short time, fulfill the Christmas promise of peace on earth and good will towards all mankind.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But Mars is not so benevolent a god; sadly, if inevitably, the truce didn’t last.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Irate officers on both sides put an end to what very well could have been considered treasonous fraternization with the enemy. Even a capital crime.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Pvt. Archibald Stanley remembered how one of his officers abruptly canceled the informal truce in his section of the trenches. There were still a few Germans out in the open when he approached Stanley and said, “You still got the armistice?”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The grim officer then picked up a rifle, took cold aim, and promptly shot one of the Germans dead. The rest leapt back into their dugouts, and returned fire. And so the war began again.</span></p>

<p>Officials in Europe are warning that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/iran" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Iran’s</a> terrorist Islamic regime is hiring children to carry attacks against Israeli targets in Europe.</p>
<p>Bloomberg News <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-12-21/iran-is-hiring-children-to-attack-israeli-targets-in-europe" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that there have been numerous reported instances where Iran has hired children to conduct terrorist attacks against Israeli targets:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>A 15-year-old boy gets into a taxi outside Stockholm hiding a loaded gun and asks to be taken to the Israeli embassy. A 13-year-old in Gothenburg is caught firing shots at Israeli defense firm Elbit Systems. At the same facility, a 16-year-old helps to plant home-made explosives outside the main entrance. … In Brussels in May, the security services found children as young as 14 orchestrating an attack on the Israeli embassy.</em></p></blockquote>
<p>Iran seeks to have proxies recruit and hire the children because they want a level of plausible deniability.</p>
<p>The report said that Nordic nations in particular were especially vulnerable because “they have traditionally been open societies with minimal policing and high trust.”</p>
<p>One of the reasons that children in particular have been targeted is because the criminal penalties they face are minimal, often times amounting to little more than a slap on the wrist. In Sweden and Norway, they can’t even be prosecuted if they are under 15 years old, the report said.</p>
<p>Iranian-backed actors will pay the children as much as $1,500 for a murder or a couple hundred dollars for a “petrol bomb attack,” the report said.</p>
<p>The report said that sometimes the children do not even have an idea of what they are being recruited to do.</p>
<p>“There are cases where the proxies aren’t aware or don’t realize that they are acting on behalf of a foreign power,” the Swedish Security Service said in a statement earlier this year.</p>
<p>The warnings come as countries around Europe have been on a heightened state of alert over the last 14 months following Hamas’ October 7 terrorist attack in Israel.</p>
<p>The terrorist attack sparked a surge in activity from Islamic terrorists throughout Europe, many of whom are furious that Israel would even dare respond with military force to Hamas murdering more than 1,200 people during the attack.</p>

<p>Dozens of casualties were reported after a car plowed into a large number of people at a Christmas market in the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/germany" target="_blank" rel="noopener">German</a> city of Magdeburg on Friday night in what officials say is a likely terrorist attack.</p>
<p>Emergency services reported that at least 60 to 80 people were injured in the attack, and five have died.</p>
<p>BILD also <a href="https://www.bild.de/news/magdeburg-raste-auto-in-menschenmenge-grosseinsatz-auf-weihnachtsmarkt-6765b9fff0c2b32e8c26d02b" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that the attacker &#8220;is said to be a man from Saudi Arabia born in 1974.&#8221;</p>
<p>The suspected driver of the vehicle, which drove down a street that was completely packed with people, was arrested shortly after the attack, officials said.</p>

<p>While there was no immediate word about the identity of the attacker or a possible motive, law enforcement officials throughout Europe are often on high alert for Islamic terrorist attacks, especially around Christian and Jewish holidays.</p>
<p>The threats posed by Islamic terrorists around the world have surged following Hamas&#8217; October 7 terrorist attack in Israel last year.</p>
<p>In December 2016, an Islamic terrorist stole a semi-truck and drove into a crowd, killing a dozen and wounding more than 50.</p>

<p>Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/nancy-pelosi" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nancy Pelosi</a> (D-CA) was hospitalized in Europe on Friday after the 84-year-old fell down the stairs and broke her hip.</p>
<p>Pelosi &#8220;tripped going down marble stairs at the Grand Ducal Palace and took a hard fall,&#8221; The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/13/us/politics/nancy-pelosi-hospitalized-luxembourg-falling.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.</p>
<p>A source close to the former Speaker of the House Representatives said that she fractured her hip during the fall.</p>
<p>Doctors believe that a standard operation should be sufficient to repair the damage, but they were not sure if that would be done in Europe or the U.S.</p>
<p>The incident happened as Pelosi was traveling with a bipartisan Congressional delegation in Luxembourg to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.</p>
<p>Pelosi &#8220;sustained an injury during an official engagement and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation,&#8221; a statement from her office said, adding that she was &#8220;currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals.&#8221;</p>

<p>Federal prosecutors announced on Friday that they arrested and charged a 33-year-old Albanian national for allegedly attempting to provide support to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/isis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ISIS</a> and distributing instructions on how to build bombs.</p>
<p>Authorities <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/former-bronx-resident-arrested-attempting-provide-material-support-isis-and" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that Erald Alimehmeti, who has a U.S. citizenship and used to live in the Bronx, moved back to Albania in 2014 and did two stints in the prison there — from 2015-2019 and 2020-2022.</p>
<p>“Erald Alimehmeti not only allegedly attempted to provide material support to ISIS by trying to recruit and train who he believed to be like minded individuals online, but also repeatedly shared multiple instructions on how to make explosives for use in a terrorist attack,” said FBI Assistant Director in Charge James E. Dennehy.</p>
<p>In between his prison terms, Alimehmeti allegedly created multiple online accounts on social media and encrypted messaging apps that he used to communicate with others about his desire to carry out terrorist attacks for ISIS. He expressed interest in attacks similar to what the D.C. sniper committed in 2002.</p>
<p>He regularly posted ISIS propaganda online that praised the terrorist group’s leaders.</p>

<p>He also allegedly posted videos showing ISIS terrorists killing American soldiers stationed in Africa and wrote: “The Islamic State in Africa killing crusaders, American and French special forces. Look at how the US special forces scream before they die!!! Hahaha!”</p>
<p>Alimehmeti allegedly worked to compile and distribute resources on how to produce explosives that would be used in terrorist attacks.</p>
<p>He was charged with one count of attempting to provide material support to ISIS and one count of distributing information about bomb making in furtherance of committing a violent federal crime.</p>
<p>If convicted, each count carries up to a 20-year prison sentence.</p>

<p>Arabs living in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/netherlands" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Amsterdam</a> chased Jews through the streets after a pro-Palestinian protest, spurred by a soccer match involving an Israeli team, devolved into a scene resembling a “pogrom,” according to reports and shocking videos.</p>
<p>Video posted by the Instagram account week.4palestinenl showed someone struggling to stay afloat in a river, as a man orders him, “Say ‘free Palestine’ and we go.” The man, who had seemingly been in thrown in the river, acquiesced, and his tormenter said “good.”</p>
<p>The group posted alongside the video, “A zionist got a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DCDbOL2IyDT/?img_index=4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">free swimming lesson</a>… Who’s street? Oh yeah, our street.”</p>
<p>The <a href="https://nltimes.nl/2024/11/07/amsterdam-bans-pro-palestine-rally-ajax-maccabi-tel-aviv-match" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NL Times</a> reported that the group Week 4 Palestine planned a protest in Amsterdam’s Dam Square over the Israeli soccer team Maccabi Tel Aviv playing Amsterdam’s Ajax team, but that the city’s mayor Femke Halsema banned the protest, citing the potential for “violent confrontations.”</p>
<p>But “rioting broke out when several other groups of people chanted pro-Palestinian slogans at the Israeli fans,” the paper said. Some <a href="https://nltimes.nl/2024/11/07/arrests-amsterdam-pro-palestinian-activists-heckle-maccabi-tel-aviv-fans" target="_blank" rel="noopener">arrests</a> were made, but police would not say whether they were pro-Palestinian activists or others, it added.</p>
<p>The Week 4 Palestine Instagram account posted videos of its members marching with torches and wrapped in Palestinian flags. It said, “When people stand up against genocide and want to speak out against the zionist state of Israhell, @burgemeesterfemkehalsema chooses to silence them and sends the riot police against demonstrators while IOF and the Mossad are given free rein in the city of Amsterdam.”</p>

<p>Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to the attacks by sending two airplanes to Amsterdam in order to pull Israelis safely out of the city.</p>
<p>A <a href="https://www.jns.org/netanyahu-sends-planes-to-amsterdam-to-rescue-jews-from-pogrom/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> from the prime minister&#8217;s office stated: &#8220;The harsh pictures of the assault on our citizens in Amsterdam will not be overlooked. Prime Minister Netanyahu views the horrifying incident with utmost gravity and demands that the Dutch government and security forces take vigorous and swift action against the rioters, and ensure the safety of our citizens.”</p>
<p>“There is a pogrom currently taking place in Europe in 2024,” Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, wrote on X Thursday night, alongside a video of an Arab man chasing another man through the streets. “The Dutch authorities must take decisive action against terrorism now.”</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A brief trip back to my native Britain the other week was a depressing experience.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There has been widespread rioting in cities across England following the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/more-than-a-dozen-people-mostly-children-stabbed-by-17-year-old-male-in-u-k-multiple-fatalities-reported" target="_blank" rel="noopener">murder</a> of three young girls in Southport at a Taylor Swift dance class.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A large number of Brits, I think it is fair to say, are extremely <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/people-have-finally-had-enough-of-the-illegal-immigration-takeover" target="_blank" rel="noopener">agitated</a> about uncontrolled (often illegal) immigration. Tens of thousands of migrants have been allowed to flood into the country on small dinghies from France. 1 in 27 people now living in Britain arrived in the past two years. 4 in 10 foreign-born people in Britain have arrived in the past decade. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There is a palpable sense that nothing in Britain runs the way it should, least of all the criminal justice system.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The number of <a href="https://rapecrisis.org.uk/get-informed/statistics-sexual-violence/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recorded rapes</a> in England and Wales in 2023-24 was three times higher than in 2013-14. A recent investigation discovered that across much of the country, the police had not identified a single suspect for </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">neighborhood crimes over the previous three years. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Only a few weeks before the unrest erupted, the authorities announced that even violent offenders would be released from prison after serving a mere 40 percent of their sentences.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Then came the riots, and the authorities suddenly discovered that it is possible to arrest and prosecute criminals after all. Prosecutions that would normally take months to come to court were undertaken within a few days. That, plus the return of British rain, seems to have dampened the spirits of the troublemakers.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Instead of clamping down on immigration, or addressing some of the underlying concerns about Muslim integration (or lack thereof), the authorities seem to find it easier to clamp down on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-uks-orwellian-crackdown-on-free-speech-could-be-headed-our-way" target="_blank" rel="noopener">free speech</a>, prosecuting people for obnoxious opinions about either immigrants or Muslims expressed online.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The most senior official in charge of public prosecutions in Britain declared that he has a team of “dedicated police officers scouring social media” to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/uk-police-chief-suggests-he-would-arrest-americans-for-highlighting-british-riots-online" target="_blank" rel="noopener">arrest people</a> for posting things that are “insulting” or “abusive”. He even threatened to extradite people to the UK for sharing such material online.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">All of this has helped contribute to the now widely held idea that Britain has a “two tier” criminal justice system.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Having cheerfully announced that they would be letting violent criminals out of prison after completing less than half their sentences a few weeks before, the authorities now threaten people with jail time for expressing idiotic views. In Cheshire, the police boasted of arresting a woman for what they called “an inaccurate social media post”.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In order to fully understand why Britain is in such a sorry state it is essential to appreciate what has gone wrong with the country’s judiciary.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Mass immigration has become an explosive issue in Britain because judges have routinely thwarted attempts by successive governments to control it. In 2010, 2015, 2017 and 2019, Brits voted repeatedly to end mass immigration. It has not happened because judges have systematically prevented elected governments from controlling the country’s borders.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">British judges only ever seem to rule in favor of those who enter the country illegally being able to remain, ruling on the basis of what they think the law should be, not the laws Parliament has passed.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Britain, a once orderly, high-trust society has become increasingly lawless because judges have routinely failed to apply sentences that ordinary Brits would regard as just. It is so commonplace for violent robbers and rapists to be given community sentences, rather than go to prison, it is seldom even reported anymore.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Why are British judges so awful? Because they are unaccountable to the public.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In Britain, judges are appointed, not elected. Until 2006, at least the appointments were made by an elected minister, meaning there was a degree of democratic oversight.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Since 2006, Britain’s judges have been appointed by the Judicial Appointments Commission, a body obsessed about diversity, equity and inclusion, rather than justice. Thanks to Human Rights law, judges are not merely unaccountable. They regard judicial activism as part of their job.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Liberty and order in Britain are collapsing as a consequence.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At some point, we must all hope a new Margaret Thatcher emerges in Britain, someone with the vision and principle to save the country from decline. On its current trajectory, Britain is drifting towards the abyss of a sectarian society.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In 2001, there were one and a half million Muslims in Britain. Today there are 4 million. If even a small percentage of British Muslims adhere to the Islamist teachings of Sayyid Qutb, the Egyptian father of modern violent jihad, the country has a massive problem. Far from addressing the problem, right now Britain is a country that cannot even talk about the fact that it might have a problem.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Any new Thatcher must, as she did, address an underlying British economic malaise. Thanks to net zero energy policies, extraordinary restrictive regulations, high taxes and excessive public spending, the UK has had remarkably little per capita growth over the past decade.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But far more important than fixing the economy, Britain needs a state machinery capable of addressing issues of culture and cohesion. Old assumptions, and long established precedents governing citizenship, will need to change.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For that to happen, the next Thatcher needs to recognize that much of the machinery of the British state is dysfunctional. Reform is overdue.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Judges need to come under some sort of democratic oversight. Senior civil servants must no longer be afforded the luxury of deciding whether to implement policies that clash with their preferences. Those elected to Parliament, not unelected officials, need to be able to decide if the country can afford to cut taxes.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Britain can only be pulled back from the brink by a leader that recognizes that it is time to treat the judiciary and the administrative state as Thatcher once treated the trade unions.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While Americans lit up their skies on July 4 to celebrate independence from the British Parliament, many UK politicians wept upon realizing their own newfound independence — having lost their seats in the most disastrous election for Conservatives in decades.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Rishi Sunak’s famous gamble — calling an early election despite trailing in the polls — did not pay off. Fourteen years of what many regard as Tory failures on key issues could not be solved with a few weeks of campaign propaganda. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While inaction on illegal immigration played a central role in garnering frustrations among the base, social conservatives expressed bitter regret about a so-called “Conservative” government which has presided over a “woke” march through the institutions, a cultural war on the meaning of “woman,” a shut down on free speech, and some of the most poisonous, ideological school curriculums we’ve ever seen. With a new rival, Reform, offering a Right-wing alternative on the political stage, the Tories hemorrhaged votes from disappointed conservatives, splitting the Right of the political spectrum and handing victory to the Labour Party.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The post-match analysis has been muddled. </span><a href="https://www.miriamcates.org.uk/news/rebuilding-our-party#:~:text=The%20future%20for%20the%20Party,to%20win%20back%20our%20base." target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Conservatives have understood the need to roll back on “woke” and return to genuine conservative principles. Many others insist the solution is to become even more liberally milquetoast. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Former Energy Minister </span><a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/06/17/general-election-latest-news-sunak-starmer-farage-reform/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lord Callanan</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> has pushed for “a liberal, mainstream, centre-right Conservative Party that’s socially liberal but economically conservative.” </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Former MP </span><a href="https://x.com/RoryStewartUK/status/1808082855559323983" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Rory Stewart</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> joined the chorus with an urgent party appeal to “move back to the center” and “reject the fantasies of the Faragist Right.” The best way to win back your losses, is of course, to insult and shun them. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The schism of the British Right exposes a more universal friction in conservatism. Those who stand unified on economic approach — a low-tax, limited-interference government — are splintered into “conservative” and “progressive” camps on the social issues that hit society hardest. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For social conservatives, strong family units and community structures enhance human flourishing. Social progressives, on the other hand — forming a new, “Godless” Right — abhor the “outdated” notion of a nuclear family, instead preferring to champion individual freedoms. In the UK, where the progressive side of the Tories has reigned, the government took a hammer to the societal institutions which have historically done the most to serve the vulnerable. The cost hasn’t only been mounting socially but economically too. </span></p>

<h4><b>The Church</b></h4>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Historically, Christianity was responsible for hospitals, schools, and care for the poor. Even in modern times, where so much of this ground has been ceded to the State, the Church still offers a healing balm to our nation’s pandemic of loneliness. 1 in 3 UK </span><a href="https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/families/bulletins/familiesandhouseholds/2023" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">households</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> are now single-occupant. Over half of those over50 experience </span><a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/health-fitness/wellbeing/mental-health/midlife-loneliness-over-50/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">loneliness</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> most of or all the time. Religious communities have so much to offer an atomized and purposeless generation. Yet the government has undermined Christianity time and again. The Tories dismissed the right to worship during the pandemic by keeping church doors closed for longer than necessary. And they installed a series of public order laws which demonized and criminalized Christian expression — including, famously, </span><a href="https://x.com/MrWinMarshall/status/1605985657997795328" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">praying</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in the privacy of one’s own mind. </span></p>
<h4><b>Marriage</b></h4>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Take another foundational social institution: marriage. According to the U.K.’s Office for National Statistics, getting married makes people happier with their lives than earning big salaries does, and married people report higher life satisfaction than singles or cohabiting couples. Children who live with married parents report better mental health. Fathers in the home are one of the strongest safeguards against adolescent poverty and crime. Women who are married are significantly less likely to be the victims of violent crime. Men who are married are less likely to perpetrate violent crimes.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Yet the past two decades of rule by social progressives has pulled the family structure apart. Nothing has been done to stall or reverse the plummeting marriage rate, with the tax system offering almost no benefit to those who wed. On the contrary, no-fault divorce was introduced under Tory rule. </span></p>
<h4><b>Parenthood</b></h4>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Parenthood has suffered too. While our birth rate plummets — now just 50% of what it was in the 1960s — the progressives have only worsened the decline, with maternity policies limited to pushing women back into the workplace as soon as possible after birth, rather than supporting and honoring mothers’ work in raising their children. Half of women now don’t have children before the age of 30 — some out of choice, yet many because today’s social circumstances simply don’t allow for it.</span></p>
<h4><b>Mental Health</b></h4>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As marriage, faith and family crumble in neglect, the results are tragic. We are a nation battling the greatest mental health crisis in recorded history. More than </span><a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2510371/Britains-130-000-absent-dads-One-fathers-lose-contact-children-earlier-relationships.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">130,000</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> British dads have no contact at all with their children, fueling poorer mental health among our next generation, and feeding into a growing gang culture. Our welfare structures groan under the weight of an aging population with no family around them. </span><a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/die-alone-lonely-death-b2573819.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Last year</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, 9,000 people were found at least a week after they’d died alone.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Where the Church and family support has been destroyed, the state has had to expand. The London School of Economics </span><a href="https://www.lse.ac.uk/News/Latest-news-from-LSE/2022/c-Mar-22/Mental-health-problems-cost-UK-economy-at-least-118-billion-a-year-new-research" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">estimates</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> that our mental health crisis cost the UK economy at least £118 billion a year. 1 in 5 GP </span><a href="https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/one-in-five-gp-appointments-non-medical/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">appointments</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> are now taken up by people who are lonely, or are seeking life advice. As crime soars due to fatherlessness, state-funded social workers, police officers, prison services and more are in high demand. The list goes on.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Attempting to appeal to progressive fads has seen the Tories compromise on basic principles throughout their recent time in power. The social arguments against “woke” have not been enough to persuade them otherwise. But the economic arguments are stark — and so are the latest election results. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Now is the time to get back to basics. A Conservative party which supports faith, family and community has a future. A country which lacks these structures does not.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400">In a post on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C868t8JNA_k/?igsh=MWQ1ZGUxMzBkMA%3D%3D" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Instagram</a>, the 44-year-old pop singer-born Alecia Moore-shared a black-and-white photo from one of her concerts and wrote about how sorry she was that she had to cancel her show in Bern on Wednesday as part of her tour at stadiums across the U.K. and Europe.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">“I do everything I can to ensure I can perform for you every night, but after consultation with my doctor and exploring all options available, I’ve been advised that I’m unable to continue with the show tomorrow,” Pink wrote.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">“I was looking forward to being with you and making memories with you and sharing our show with you and am so disappointed that we have to cancel,” she added. “All tickets will be refunded; please</span><span style="font-weight: 400"> visit </span><span style="font-weight: 400">@takk_ab_entertainment </span><span style="font-weight: 400">for more information.”</span></p>

<p><a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/russia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Russia</a> has overtaken the United States as the top exporter of natural gas to Europe despite the continent trying to break its reliance on Russian energy in response to Russia&#8217;s war in Ukraine.</p>
<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin cut his country&#8217;s supply of gas to Europe following his invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and the continent responded by importing liquified natural gas (LNG) from the U.S.</p>
<p>&#8220;The US overtook Russia as a supplier of gas to Europe in September 2022, and has since 2023 accounted for about a fifth of the region’s supply,&#8221; The Financial Times <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/15e7b892-c4f3-45b8-b375-80ef52e4b83c" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. &#8220;But last month, Russian-piped gas and LNG shipments accounted for 15 per cent of total supply to the EU, UK, Switzerland, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and North Macedonia, according to data from ICIS.&#8221;</p>
<p>U.S. shipments of natural gas to Europe have since fallen to 14% of the region&#8217;s supply, the report said, which comes despite efforts from several European nations to sanction Russian energy, which would reduce Russia&#8217;s ability to continue funding its war through energy sales.</p>
<p>Experts claimed to the newspaper that &#8220;one-off factors drove the reversal,&#8221; including an outage at a major U.S. natural gas export facility.</p>
<p>However, the outage comes after President Joe Biden halted issuing new licenses for natural gas exporters, which has forced companies to delay signing new contracts with U.S. energy producers, Bloomberg News <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-03-15/biden-s-lng-freeze-delaying-projects-and-risking-us-market-share?embedded-checkout=true" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.</p>
<p>Rep. Stephanie Bice (R-OK) responded to the development by telling The Daily Wire in a statement: &#8220;The Biden Administration’s decision to pause approvals for new LNG export terminals has once again forced Europe into the pockets of Putin.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;His decisions not only counter his climate goals, since Russian natural gas is 41% dirtier than American, but harms our domestic producers,&#8221; she added. &#8220;When it comes to Russia, Biden talks the talk, but his actions are doing nothing but supporting Putin.&#8221;</p>
<p>Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) also responded to the news during the most recent episode of his &#8220;Verdict&#8221; podcast this week, saying that Biden and the Democrats &#8220;are united in favor of this policy.&#8221;</p>

They are hurting our allies, they are hurting Europe, and they&#8217;re hurting jobs in Texas, and hurting jobs in America,&#8221; he said, later adding: “Joe Biden and the Democrats have this incoherent view that they hate oil and gas produced in America, which, by the way, produces jobs, raises wages here in the United States, but they seemingly love oil and gas produced by our enemies. They love Russian oil and gas. They love Iranian oil and gas. They love Venezuelan oil and gas.”</p>
<p>“Joe Biden is halting the sale of American natural gas to Europe, which means the Europeans are buying them from Vladimir Putin,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;The Democrats are literally funding Russia in the war against Ukraine. It is incoherent and it&#8217;s indefensible.”</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Conservative and populist parties in several European countries made major gains in European Parliamentary elections Sunday, shaking up several regimes and prompting calls for snap elections. Nile Gardiner, Director of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at The Heritage Foundation, joined Daily Wire editor-in-chief John Bickley to discuss what is driving Europe to the Right.</span></p>
<p><b>JOHN:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Welcome, Nile. First, what has unfolded since Sunday?</span></p>
<p><b>NILE:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Well, I think the results released on Sunday night are nothing less than a political earthquake in Europe. We have seen an emphatic rejection of socialist ruling elites across much of Europe. We have seen a resounding set of victories for parties on the Right in many European countries. And we&#8217;ve seen the utter humiliation of big European figures, such as Emmanuel Macron, president of France, Olaf Scholz, the chancellor of Germany, and huge gains for conservative political parties.</span></p>
<p><b>JOHN</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">: Who are some of the big names and parties emerging in this sort of rise of the Right?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><b>NILE: </b>The biggest winner, actually, from these European elections has been Georgia Meloni in Italy, whose Brothers of Italy party did extremely well in the European elections, quadrupling their level of support. Meloni has emerged as a very, very powerful leader in Europe. In France, of course, with Marine Le Pen, her political party took over 30% percent of the vote — double the size of the vote for Emmanuel Macron&#8217;s party. She will likely face off against Macron in the French presidential race in 2027. And if that election were to be held today, she would probably emerge as the winner.</span></p>

<p><b>JOHN:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Now, we saw a snap election called by Macron. What prompted it and how risky is this for the French president and his party? </span></p>
<p><b>NILE:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> In France, Macron&#8217;s political party received only around 15% of the vote in the European Parliamentary elections. A massive humiliation really for Macron&#8217;s ruling party. Macron therefore decided to call a snap Parliamentary election. It will be held in two rounds, late June, early July. And these elections actually could go very badly potentially for the French president. And he could end up as a lame duck president for the remainder of his term, which stretches until 2027, if his party doesn&#8217;t do well in these Parliamentary elections. So, a high-risk gambit, of course, by Macron. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the UK, the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, called an early general election to be held on July the 4th. The conservatives are trailing the opposition Labour Party very heavily in the polls, also, of course, this is a high-risk move by Sunak. He&#8217;s come under a lot of criticism for calling this early election and the UK is one of the only parts in Europe where conservatives are actually in real trouble. That&#8217;s probably largely the result of having been in power for 14 years and failing to deliver on a lot of the promises made by successive conservative governments. So a rather different situation in the UK compared to most of the rest of Europe, where we are seeing conservative parties really gaining a great deal of ground. The UK is a bit of an outlier in this area compared to the rest of Europe.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>JOHN:</strong> Would you argue that a lot of the dissatisfaction is coming from the Right in the UK?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>NILE:</strong> Yes, I think that a large part of the dissatisfaction with Rishi Sunak is that he&#8217;s not being conservative enough as prime minister. And so we&#8217;ve seen the rise of Reform, a party headed by Nigel Farage. Reform is now polling at around 15 to even 20% of the vote. These are largely conservative voters who have switched to Reform, so the ruling conservatives actually face a major challenge from Reform on the Right. Of course, the biggest challenge is from the Labor Party on the Left, but the Right in the UK is split right down the middle, and that will be a big factor in most likely allowing the socialists to take power on July the 4th.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>JOHN:</strong> And what about in Germany? What are some of the trends we&#8217;re seeing there and some of the figures that are starting to define those trends?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>NILE:</strong> In Germany, it&#8217;s significant that the ruling socialists headed by Olaf Scholz have done very badly. They pulled in only around 14% of the vote. Also, the Green Party did very, very badly. They&#8217;re the main allies of the socialists. They pulled in around 12% of the vote. On the Right, the Christian Democrats did very well, winning nearly a third of the vote. But the AFD political party, which in Germany is designated as hard-Right, they actually pulled in close to around 20% of the European vote, which was a big result for them. Now, I would say that the AFD are quite different from many of the other sort of Right-wing parties in Europe, and they&#8217;re somewhat isolated from the main political groupings in the European Parliament. Significantly, Marine Le Pen actually removed the AFD from her political grouping, the Identity and Democracy group within the European Parliament. So there are big differences among parties on the Right within Europe. But undoubtedly, the reality in Germany is that it is moving Right-wards. The Left is actually losing very heavily in Germany and I would expect to see next year with the national elections in Germany a conservative Christian Democratic Union-led government to take power. It&#8217;s hard to see how the socialists are going to survive with the national elections in Germany next year. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">There&#8217;s too much power in Brussels. And so most of the political parties on the Right that were successful in this election campaigned against the idea of Euro-federalism and against giving the EU, and the European Commission in particular, more power. We saw the sort of “Brexit Effect” in a big way in this European Parliamentary election.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>JOHN:</strong> Speaking of Brexit, as you mentioned, Nigel Farage, the architect of Brexit and a pro-Trump ally, has decided to run for Parliament under the Reform Party. How will his entrance into the political arena affect the race?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>NILE:</strong> Yes, as you point out, Nigel Farage jumped into the race as the leader of the Reform Party just last week. I think it&#8217;s a significant game changer in the sense that Farage is joining the race, heading the Reform political party and encouraging many more conservative voters to switch to Reform. No doubt about it, the conservatives are going to lose a lot more seats as a result of Farage&#8217;s decision here. I think also, secondly, Nigel Farage has a good chance of winning a parliamentary seat. He&#8217;s running in the constituency of Clacton, which is a strongly Euro-skeptic, pro-Brexit area. And if Farage ends up in Parliament, I think he&#8217;ll be a very important, influential figure. What this doesn&#8217;t change, though, in terms of the big picture, is the fact that Reform, even with 15 to 20% of the vote, will likely end up only with a few seats in Parliament because of the “First-past-the-post” political system. And so the conservatives will remain the biggest party on the Right in the UK in terms of parliamentary seats, regardless of how well Reform actually performs in terms of percentage of the vote, because Reform simply doesn&#8217;t have enough firepower to win a large number of MPs under the parliamentary system. So, I expect that Reform, if they do get a few MPs in Parliament, will be closely aligned with the conservatives in terms of how they vote in the next Parliament.</span></p>

<p><b>JOHN:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> While the Right-leaning parties aren’t uniform, there are a lot of unifying characteristics of most of these parties. What would you say are some of the shared ideas and policies driving them?</span></p>
<p><b>NILE:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Yes, that&#8217;s a very good question. I would say that the number one issue in the European Parliamentary elections was really the issue of mass migration, cultural identity – a fear among many in Europe that Europe is taking in far too many migrants — and has taken in too many migrants over the course of the last two decades. This election was a fundamental rejection of mass migration to open borders. So, all of the parties on the Right who gained heavily campaigned on a platform of secure borders, limiting the flow of migrants into their countries, cracking down on migrant crime, and also fighting against Islamification in Europe. Also, high on the agenda are environmental issues as well as a rejection of net zero ideology. Nearly all of the political parties on the Right that won big in the European Parliamentary elections fought against what they believed as far-Left ideological dogma dictating hugely expensive green policies. A third factor was rising Euro-skepticism and a belief among many in Europe that the European Union has become too centralized. And so most of the political parties on the Right that were successful in this election campaigned against the idea of Euro-federalism and against giving the EU and the European Commission in particular more power.</span></p>
<p><b>JOHN:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Final question. What aspect of these trends in Europe do you feel are important for an American audience to understand?</span></p>
<p><b>NILE:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> From a U. S. perspective, I think the European election results are going to make the Biden White House very nervous. Because some of the big issues that successful parties on the Right in Europe campaigned on are the same issues that American voters are going to be voting on in November. And the European electorate emphatically rejected the kind of woke, Left-wing, elitism that has dominated Europe in recent decades. And many American voters share European voters’ concerns over mass migration, open borders, rising crime, and higher cost of living. So, what happens in Europe, I think is important to what happens in the U.S. as well.</span></p>
