Actress <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/moral-paragons-50-actors-sign-letter-alyssa-milano-hank-berrien/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Christina Applegate</a> shared her ongoing struggles with <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/biotech-company-creates-vaccine-that-could-revolutionize-multiple-sclerosis-treatment/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">multiple sclerosis</a> in a recent interview with The New York Times, revealing that she had gained some 40 pounds and could no longer walk without the use of a cane.
Applegate spoke with the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/01/arts/television/christina-applegate-dead-to-me.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NYT</a> ahead of the release of the final season of her Netflix series &#8220;Dead to Me&#8221; — which she was filming when she was first diagnosed last November. Despite a five-month hiatus to allow for the &#8220;Married With Children&#8221; alum to begin treatment, she was able to complete the season.
&#8220;This is the first time anyone’s going to see me the way I am,&#8221; she said, sharing a bit of apprehension at the thought of attending her first major ceremony since being diagnosed. &#8220;I put on 40 pounds; I can’t walk without a cane. I want people to know that I am very aware of all of that.&#8221;

Applegate went on to tell the NYT that part of her journey had been realizing that treatment was always going to be about progress rather than &#8220;get[ting] better.&#8221;
&#8220;There was the sense of, &#8216;Well, let’s get her some medicine so she can get better,'&#8221; Applegate said the initial reaction was to think of the disease as a temporary thing. &#8220;And there is no better. But it was good for me. I needed to process my loss of my life, my loss of that part of me. So I needed that time.&#8221;
&#8220;Although it’s not like I came on the other side of it, like, &#8216;Woohoo, I’m totally fine.&#8217; Acceptance?&#8221; she asked. &#8220;No. I’m never going to accept this. I’m pissed.&#8221;
Applegate, who earned Emmy nominations for the first two seasons of &#8220;Dead to Me,&#8221; said there was talk about shutting down the show after her diagnosis — but she wouldn&#8217;t have it.
&#8220;The powers that be were like, &#8216;Let’s just stop. We don’t need to finish it. Let’s put a few episodes together.&#8217; I said, &#8216;No. We’re going to do it, but we’re going to do it on my terms.'&#8221;
The third and final season of &#8220;Dead to Me&#8221; premieres on Netflix on November 17.

Late-night host <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/jimmy-kimmel" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jimmy Kimmel</a> has officially apologized for remaining onstage during “Abbott Elementary” creator Quinta Brunson’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/emmys" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Emmys</a> acceptance speech.
The writer was a guest on Kimmel’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/television" target="_blank" rel="noopener">show</a> Wednesday night, and they addressed the failed gag, which has become a topic of contention on the internet since it happened. Brunson interrupted the host’s monologue during her appearance to make a point.
&#8220;I have a little favor to ask,&#8221; she said. &#8220;So you know how when you win an Emmy you only have 45 seconds to do an acceptance speech, which is like not that much time. And then &#8230; you get less time because someone does a dumb comedy bit that goes on a bit too long?&#8221;
&#8220;I have heard of that happening in previous years,&#8221; Kimmel replied.
&#8220;Well, I was wondering, or no, more demanding if I could I have a couple of extra minutes to thank, you know, a couple of extra people,&#8221; Brunson continued. Kimmel stepped aside and let her speak.
Later on, the host made a more formal apology. 
&#8220;That was a dumb comedy bit that we thought it would be funny,&#8221; Kimmel explained, per <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/09/15/1123106002/quinta-brunson-jimmy-kimmel-apology" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NPR</a>. &#8220;Then people got upset, they said I stole your moment. And maybe I did. I&#8217;m very sorry if I did do that. I did do that, actually. &#8230; The last thing I would ever want to do is upset you, because I think so much of you. I think you know that. I hope you know that.&#8221;
&#8220;It&#8217;s very kind of you to say that,&#8221; Brunson responded. &#8220;Honestly I had a great night. It was a good night and a good time.”
Kimmel mentioned how he’s been to the Emmys multiple times and never won, while Brunson noted how she’s only attended once and won. 
The late-night host said again, &#8220;I was dumb, and I&#8217;ve got news – It&#8217;s gonna happen again.&#8221;
Kimmel was apologizing for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/white-men-really-are-insufferable-jimmy-kimmel-blasted-for-playing-dead-during-black-creators-emmy-acceptance-speech" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lying on the stage</a>, pretending to be passed out drunk, during Brunson’s entire acceptance speech after being dragged there by actor Will Arnett. The “Abbott Elementary” creator said right afterward that she wasn’t offended by the gag, but the internet was appalled on her behalf.
“I don’t know of a better example of invasive white male privilege than Jimmy Kimmel laying in the middle of Quinta Brunson’s #Emmys2022 speech. He had no business/right to take up space in the way that he did,” one person wrote.
“Jimmy Kimmel owes Quinta an apology but the messed up part is every image of her accepting her award has his ass in it,” a third person shared. “White men really are insufferable.”

Following the trend of many other <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/entertainment">awards shows</a>, the 74th Annual <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/emmys">Emmy Awards</a> saw a steep decline in viewership, delivering its lowest ratings yet.
A mere 5.9 million people tuned in for “television’s biggest night,” representing a 25% decrease compared to last year, according to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/09/13/emmys-2022-hit-record-low-with-25-drop-in-viewers-since-last-year/">New York Post</a>. This year’s show also reportedly had a 1.0 rating among adults aged 18 to 49, which is the lowest score the Emmys ever received among this core demographic.
The steep decline can’t even be blamed on COVID aftermath. In 2021, there was a 16% increase in viewership compared to 2020. The Post notes that the last time the awards show gained double-digit results was in 2018 when it squeaked past that goalpost with 10.2 million viewers. This year the show was broadcast live from Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles after going virtual in 2020 and filming in a large tent in 2021.
There’s been a trend away from award shows in recent years, and the Emmys is no exception. While there were no major controversies at the 2022 show comparable to Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Academy Awards earlier this year, there also weren’t any standout moments that would inspire fans to tune in. 
“Abbott Elementary” got a lot of buzz for winning Outstanding Casting, Outstanding Writing, and Outstanding Supporting Actress. But that was tainted by an incident where comedian Jimmy Kimmel laid on the stage playing dead during the entirety of creator Quinta Brunson’s acceptance speech. She was in on the bit and later professed she didn’t care, but that wasn’t enough to stop Twitter from coming after Kimmel with claims of racism and sexism. 
“White men really are insufferable,” one Twitter user <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/white-men-really-are-insufferable-jimmy-kimmel-blasted-for-playing-dead-during-black-creators-emmy-acceptance-speech">complained</a>. 
HBO’s “The White Lotus” was also a big winner Monday night, taking home awards for five categories for which it was nominated. &#8220;Squid Game&#8217;s&#8221; Lee Jung-jae won for Best Actor. “Succession” won best drama much to the disdain of “Better Call Saul” fans who were hoping to see the show break its 46 Emmy nomination streak with no win curse. “Ted Lasso” on Apple TV+ took home Outstanding Drama Comedy series.
One of the most talked about jokes of the evening was at actor Leonardo DiCaprio’s expense. The 47-year-old A-lister has been mercilessly mocked since breaking up with his model girlfriend, Camila Morrone, soon after her 25th birthday.
“Zendaya just turned 26 last week, happy birthday,&#8221; actor Kenan Thompson quipped during the broadcast. &#8220;26 is a weird age in Hollywood. I mean, you&#8217;re young enough to play a high school student but too old to date Leonardo DiCaprio.&#8221;

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/emmys">The Emmys</a> were slammed after excluding the late Olivia Newton-John from their “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSh0QiP8E_0">In Memoriam” tribute</a> on Monday.
The famed pop music icon died in August after a thirty-year intermittent battle against cancer in August. She was 73.
“How do forget Olivia Newton John? How dare you. She is and always will be an icon. And you forgot her?” one social media user <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-11205273/Emmy-Awards-slammed-excluding-Olivia-Newton-John-ceremonys-Memoriam-tribute.html">fired</a>.
The Emmys’ tribute included James Caan, Tony Dow, Gilbert Gottfried, Anne Heche, Howard Hesseman, Dwayne Hickman, Ray Liotta, Robert Morse, Roger Mosley, Nichelle Nichols, Sidney Poitier, Bob Saget, Peter Scolari, Yoko Shimada, Paul Sorvino, Dean Stockwell, David Warner, and Betty White.
“Olivia Newton-John not being included? Explain yourselves #Emmys,” chimed in another disgruntled observer, while another snapped, “Ok watching Emmys and they just honored many who have passed, where was Olivia Newton-John?”
Newton-John was included on the Emmys’ ‘In Memoriam” page. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992.
Newton John first rose to prominence with her album “Let Me be There,” in 1973, for which she won the first of four Grammys. She followed that with two Number One hits: “ I Honestly Love You” in 1974 and “Have You Never Been Mellow” in 1975.
Although never a major TV star, she appeared on numerous TV shows, including “Bette,” “Murphy Brown,” “Ned and Stacey” and “Sordid Lives: The Series,” as well as the TV movies “A Mom For Christmas” and “A Christmas Romance.”
Newton-John’s close friend actress Jane Seymour spoke of Newton-John’s courage: &#8220;I realized that she was a unique friend. I have friends, but not like her in my life. I just remember so clearly our conversations and the smile on her face. And then the fact that she wasn&#8217;t afraid, I don&#8217;t think, to pass. She just didn&#8217;t want to miss out on life.”
Seymour recalled her last visit to Newton-John in February when she was thinking “this could easily be the last time I see her.”
“But I felt that before … several years before when she was incredibly frail and on a lot of pain meds and I just thought, oh my gosh, she, she was barely eating,” the actress stated. “She looked so frail. We were all surprised. She pulled it all back together again and had a quality of life again. It was amazing. She defied all the odds, really.”

The 2022 <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/emmys">Emmy Awards</a> went forward mostly without incident, except for a controversial bit by <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/jimmy-kimmel">Jimmy Kimmel</a>, which involved him playing dead on stage while the “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/television">Abbott Elementary</a>” series creator and writer was accepting her award. 
Kimmel got dragged out onto the stage by actor Will Arnett, who then announced the winner for best writing in a comedy series. Series creator and writer Quinta Brunson looked down at Kimmel playing dead on stage and said, &#8220;Jimmy, wake up. I won. Jimmy?&#8221; But Kimmel didn’t budge, instead committing to the bit for the entirety of her speech.
Brunson herself wasn’t mad about the comedy act, Yahoo Entertainment <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/emmys-2022-highs-lows-kimmel-faces-backlash-while-others-praised-for-powerful-acceptance-speeches-071032256.html">reported</a>. She later told the press backstage, &#8220;I don’t know. I know Jimmy Kimmel. The bit didn’t bother me that much. Honestly, Jimmy gave me my first big late night spot, he was one of the first people to see ‘Abbott Elementary.&#8217; He was the first person to message me on Instagram. &#8230; He was so excited it was going to be on ABC.”
“I was happy it was Jimmy,” she continued. “He’s one of the comedy godfathers. &#8230; Tomorrow maybe I’ll be mad at him.&#8221; Brunson also said she might “punch him in the face” when she goes on his late-night show Wednesday evening.
Kimmel kept up the gag when asked about it, jokingly telling Entertainment Tonight, “I had my eyes closed, I had no idea where I was. It was one of the weirdest things that’s ever happened to me.”
Meanwhile, fans who saw the spectacle weren’t nearly so forgiving.

Her only win of the night was for the ABC comedy series “Abbott Elementary.”

&#8220;No really, what an audience you are,&#8221; Short began, gesturing to the crowd before taking a quick potshot at former President Donald Trump. &#8220;I wish I could box you up and take you home &#8230; like classified White House documents.
As the audience laughed and applauded, Martin turned toward Gomez and asked pointedly, &#8220;Selena, how much time do we have left?&#8221;
Gomez pondered for a moment before answering, &#8220;I don&#8217;t know, with a good diet and exercise, maybe 10, 12 years.&#8221;
That prompted a loud laugh from Short — and laughter from the audience as well — but Martin tried to keep a straight face as he delivered the next crack.
&#8220;Earlier tonight, as I was walking the red carpet I have at home —&#8221; he paused as the audience chuckled. &#8220;I thought, what&#8217;s the difference between movies versus television? And I realized, well, Marty can get work in television.&#8221;
&#8220;Aww, thanks, Steve,&#8221; Short replied as the crowd laughed again. &#8220;I&#8217;ve always been curious. Does it bother you when people come up to you and say, &#8216;[gasp] Big fan, Angela Lansbury&#8217;?&#8221;
The crowd roared, but Gomez chimed in once more: &#8220;You know what I love about working with these guys?&#8221;
There was a smattering of laughter as Gomez paused dramatically before answering, &#8220;No paparazzi. Ever.&#8221;
The trio&#8217;s hit show, Hulu&#8217;s &#8220;Only Murders in the Building,&#8221; is described on IMDb (Internet Movie Database) as follows: &#8220;Three strangers who share an obsession with true crime suddenly find themselves caught up in one.&#8221; The show was <a href="https://www.emmys.com/shows/only-murders-building" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nominated</a> for 17 Emmys in total and won three.

Media leaped on the idea that Obama now was halfway to becoming an &#8220;EGOT&#8221; winner, meaning the accomplishment of winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.

17 people have won all four awards, but all of them were artists of one form or another. Some were composers and orchestrators, like iconic Broadway composer Richard Rodgers and fellow composers Andrew Lloyd Webber, Alan Menken and Marvin Hamlisch, and Robert Lopez; orchestrator-composer Jonathan Tunick and lyricist Tim Rice and also achieved the feat; some were actors like Audrey Hepburn, Rita Moreno, John Gielgud, Whoopi Goldberg and Jennifer Hudson; one musician, John Legend, earned the status, as did directors Mel Brooks and Mike Nichols and producer Scott Rudin.
Obama would become the first member of the EGOT group to enter simply by narrating. He won for narrating the episode “A World of Wonder.”
In the <a href="https://people.com/politics/barack-obama-netflix-docuseries-worlds-greatest-national-parks-trailer/">trailer</a> for the documentary, Obama intoned, “When humanity started to protect these wild places, we did not realize how important they would become. They&#8217;re a haven for endangered species and a hotbed for scientific research.”
Other nominees for the EMMY Obama won at the Creative Arts Emmys included Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, David Attenborough and Lupita Nyong’o.
Obama’s wife Michelle won a Grammy in 2020, for narrating her memoir “Becoming.”
Obama was awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize; he was nominated after spending less than two weeks in office as President of the United States. “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/yellowstone">Yellowstone</a>” fans are feeling snubbed as the hit <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/television">television show</a> received zero Emmy nominations in 2022. 
The Paramount series is arguably the most popular show on cable, drawing an average audience of 11 million total viewers during its fourth season, per the <a href="https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2022-07-12/emmy-nominations-2022-yellowstone-snub">Los Angeles Times</a>. This is mainly due to the incredible performance of lead actor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kevin-costner">Kevin Costner</a>, along with a solid supporting cast.
“Yellowstone” is so popular it spurred multiple spinoffs, including the critically acclaimed prequel “1883,” which did receive nominations for cinematography and music. But the two Westerns aren&#8217;t in the running for major awards like Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Drama Series.
“Yellowstone” has been popular for all four seasons, yet the series earned just one Emmy nomination previously for production design for a narrative contemporary program. It lost.
Conservatives can’t help but be suspicious that it has something to do with the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-show-isnt-woke-meghan-mccain-explains-yellowstone-becoming-a-smash-success">anti-woke content</a> in “Yellowstone,” which likely helped make it a hit among viewers seeking entertainment free from preaching and politics. 
In general, shows from streaming giants like Netflix fared better than network cable shows, which has been the trend for years. ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” and lead actress Quinta Brunson were the only nominees from the four main networks in major primetime Emmy categories. 
Cable networks such as HBO, Showtime, Paramount, and AMC had multiple nominations for shows, including “Better Call Saul” and &#8220;Succession.&#8221; 
“Succession” was the most-nominated program of 2022 with 25 nods, including Outstanding Drama, per <a href="https://variety.com/2022/tv/awards/emmys-nominations-list-2022-1235313788/">Variety</a>. 
The next most nominated were “Ted Lasso” and “The White Lotus,” with 20 nominations each. 
Barack Obama even received an Emmy nomination for voiceover work in the Netflix docuseries “Our Great National Parks.” 
Why did “Yellowstone” get snubbed? It’s true that getting nominated for a network TV series is becoming harder. But fans of the series can’t understand why, especially with the popularity and excellent reviews even from mainstream critics. 
The series has an overall critic and user rating of 83% on <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/yellowstone">Rotten Tomatoes</a>, while the most recent season boasts a 90% rating. 
Commentator Meghan McCain <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-show-isnt-woke-meghan-mccain-explains-yellowstone-becoming-a-smash-success">penned a piece</a> for The Daily Mail breaking down why shows like HBO’s “Succession” get all the fanfare while drawing fewer viewers than shows like “Yellowstone.”
McCain wrote, “We live in an era where what is considered a critical hit often ends up on one cover after another, winning Hollywood awards many times over, while at the same time barely breaking over a few million viewers.”
“The show isn’t woke, it isn’t trying to lecture anyone about everything that is wrong with our culture,” she continued. “It doesn’t portray the elitist perspective of coastal television writers and where they think America should be going.”
“[Audiences] enjoy entertainment with values that they share and characters that they can relate to – and if that’s something you’d rather ignore as a leftist in media, well, then maybe it’s you who is living in the bubble.”
Still, it’s not enough to earn “Yellowstone” Emmy Award nominations, apparently.

Actor Seth Rogen was among the many people who called out the 2021 Emmy Awards ceremony for seemingly failing to abide by COVID health and safety protocols, though he did not mention the hypocrisy of the elites getting to break rules that others are forced to follow.
Rogen was the first presenter of the night and used his moment to ask why the awards ceremony was not as advertised when it came to COVID restrictions.
&#8220;Let me start by saying, there’s way too many of us in this little room. What are we doing? They said this was outdoors. It&#8217;s not,&#8221; he said. &#8220;They lied to us. We&#8217;re in a hermetically-sealed tent right now. I would not have come to this. Why is there a roof? It’s more important that we have three chandeliers than that we make sure we don’t kill Eugene Levy tonight. That is what has been decided.”
&#8220;This is insane. I went from wiping my groceries to Paul Bettany sneezing in my face. So, that’s a big week! If anyone’s gonna sneeze in my face, Paul, I want it to be you,&#8221; he added.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has since said that the event didn&#8217;t violate COVID-19 guidelines because it followed the rules in place for films and productions, which have &#8220;additional safety modifications&#8221; intended for &#8220;controlled interactions.&#8221;
&#8220;The Emmy Award Show is a television production, and persons appearing on the show are considered performers,&#8221; read the statement, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/emmys-2021-los-angeles-county-responds-criticism-lack-covid-19-protocols">according</a> to Fox News. &#8220;All persons appearing on or in the audience of the Emmy Award Show were fully vaccinated against COVID-19.&#8221;
As The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/emmys-go-maskless-get-blasted-masking-is-solely-reserved-for-us-peasants">reported</a>, other presenters at the show did not take kindly to Rogen’s &#8220;criticism.”
<blockquote>The show’s DJ Reggie Watts added, “Despite what Seth might have said, we’re going to celebrate and party, but while we’re doing that we’re absolutely following all the health and safety guidelines that some really smart people asked us to do to keep us safe from COVID.”
Cedric the Entertainer chimed in, “It actually feels amazing in here unlike what Seth (Rogen) was talking about. It feels good. We’re all vaxxed. We had to get vaxxed to come here. I got vaxxed. I did not have a reaction like Micki Minaj’s cousin’s friend. I got Pfizer because I’m bougie. Pfizer is the Neiman Marcus of vaccines. Moderna, that’s Macy’s. Johnson &amp; Johnson, that’s TJ Maxx.”</blockquote>
The Emmys took place in a region with strict COVID restrictions, yet celebrities appeared to flout those restrictions and fall back on the fact that they are vaccinated, even though cities with strict mask guidelines have set them in place regardless of vaccination status.
Just a week earlier, numerous elites &#8212; including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY – attended the annual Met Gala. Just like the Emmys, the Met Gala was indoors, yet celebrity attendees did not wear masks while those serving them were required to do so, as one Twitter user noted.
“Why is it that only ‘the help’ have to wear masks at the Emmy’s? First it was the Met Gala. And now this. Seems that Covid-19 gives you a pass if you are wearing black tie or a designer frock. Or maybe it is just one rule for one group … and one for another,” the user wrote.
Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) also called out the celebrities, saying they are the “same liberals [who] sanctimoniously mock Republicans for giving parents a choice about masks.”
Celebrities aren’t the only ones ignoring COVID rules forced on other people. Politicians have also ignored their own rules. Most recently, San Francisco Mayor London Breed was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/san-francisco-mayor-photographed-indoors-without-mask-despite-mandate-responds-by-denouncing-fun-police">photographed dancing and singing</a> at a jazz club without her mask. When asked about it, Breed lamented the “fun police” and said that she “got up and started dancing because I was feeling the spirit and I wasn’t thinking about a mask.” Other people aren’t allowed such an excuse.

Even Seth Rogen Called Out The Emmys For How It Handled COVID Health And Safety Protocols

Hulu’s flagship series “The Handmaid’s Tale” may delight liberal audiences who believe the show represents the reality of what people on the Right want, but its latest season failed to inspire judges at the Creative Arts and Primetime Emmys ceremonies.
Variety <a href="https://variety.com/2021/tv/awards/handmaids-tale-most-emmy-losses-record-1235068326/">reported</a> that the show received 21 nominations between the two ceremonies but didn’t win a single award. The show has now set the record for most losses in a single year, breaking the record previously set by “Mad Men” in 2012, which lost 17 nominations that year.

<blockquote>Only three shows earned more nominations than Hulu’s flagship series, with Netflix’s “The Crown” and Disney Plus’ “The Mandalorian” receiving 24 noms each and “WandaVision” picking up 23. Also, like “The Handmaid’s Tale,” NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” landed 21 noms, but managed to pick up a handful of trophies between the ceremonies.
Other empty-handers in Emmy history include “Northern Exposure” and “The Larry Sanders Show,” which went zero for 16 in their respective years.</blockquote>
In the past, “The Handmaid’s Tale” delivered at the Emmys, winning the award for best drama series in 2017. It was the first streaming program to win the award. In total, the show has won 15 Emmys over the course of its four seasons. A fifth season is in the works.
Despite the awards show loss, the show maintains a strong viewership. Jordan Helman, head of scripted content for Hulu Originals, <a href="https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/handmaids-tale-pen15-renewals-hulu-viewership-1235036385/">told</a> Variety that the show “year after year after year, sees viewership growth, unlike anything we’ve ever seen.”
The show is beloved by leftists who use it as a talking point against pro-life legislation and who dress up as handmaids to protest.
As The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/elizabeth-warren-agrees-with-msnbcs-reid-that-texas-abortion-law-is-turning-america-into-the-handmaids-tale">reported</a>, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) agreed with left-wing MSNBC host Joy Reid that Texas’ new abortion law was straight out of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale”:

She then asked for the dystopian literary assessment of Senator Elizabeth Warren. “People think it’s hyperbolic when I tweet about The Handmaid’s Tale coming to America,” Reid admitted, “but I don’t think it seems hyperbolic now. Does it to you?”

The Texas law went into effect earlier this month and allows citizens to report doctors and anyone else involved in providing a woman an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy.
“In the novel legal strategy, the state Legislature designed the law to prevent government officials from directly enforcing it. Rodriguez plays the role of &#8220;house mother Bianca&#8221; in the FX series &#8220;Pose,&#8221; which chronicles the drag scene in New York City through the 1980s and 1990s, the individuals who compete for recognition on the drag ball circuit, and the rise of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Rodriguez, whose character is transgender, as well as a sufferer of HIV/AIDS, on the show leads one of the drag &#8220;houses&#8221; &#8212; self-selected families and mentorship circles for the drag performers.
The show itself has been described as groundbreaking for transgender actors: several of its leading roles are transgender individuals. <a href="https://deadline.com/2017/10/pose-ryan-murphy-transgender-cast-fx-series-1202194718/">According to Deadline</a>, the show cast five transgender actors in leading roles, by design, creating the &#8220;largest cast of transgender actors in series regular roles ever for a scripted series.&#8221;
&#8220;The five transgender actors were cast after a six-month nationwide search led by casting director Alexa Fogel. They are MJ Rodriguez, Indya Moore, Dominique Jackson, Hailie Sahar, and Angelica Ross. All will be playing transgender characters,&#8221; the outlet reported before the series premiered. &#8220;Also cast in the series are Ryan Jamaal Swain, Billy Porter and Dyllon Burnside.&#8221;
Rodriguez is the focus of the show&#8217;s third and final season.
&#8220;Pose&#8221; is critically acclaimed and, ahead of this year&#8217;s Emmy nominations, had already snagged 11 nods. But organizations like GLAAD intervened ahead of this year&#8217;s nominations announcement to press for Emmy voters to consider &#8220;Pose&#8217;s&#8221; transgender actors for Emmy nods.

Rodriguez, <a href="https://tvline.com/2021/07/13/mj-rodriguez-emmy-nomination-pose-history-lead-actress/">TV Line noted</a>, received a nod during the show&#8217;s nomination announcement on Tuesday, and for &#8220;Lead Actress,&#8221; a category in line with Rodriguez&#8217;s gender identity, not biological gender.
Rodriguez &#8220;received an Emmy nomination on Tuesday for Lead Actress in a Drama Series, making her the first trans woman in history to be recognized in a lead acting category. Rodriguez — a 2021 TVLine Dream Emmy nominee — was honored for her work as house mother Bianca in the FX drama’s third and final season,&#8221; the outlet said.
Although Rodriguez is the first to be nominated as a Lead Actress, Laverne Cox, who starred in &#8220;Orange Is the New Black&#8221; was the first transgender individual nominated for an Emmy, according to the award show&#8217;s information site.
Cox &#8220;rose to prominence with her role as Sophia Burset on the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black, becoming the first openly transgender person to be nominated for an Emmy Award in any acting category, and the first to be nominated for an Emmy Award since composer Angela Morley in 1990,&#8221; the Emmy site noted.
Cox is also the first transgender Emmy winner: &#8220;In 2015, she won a Daytime Emmy Award in Outstanding Special Class Special as executive producer for &#8220;Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word,&#8221; making her the first openly transgender woman to win the award.&#8221;
