The Trump administration on Tuesday rolled out a new plan to “break up the federal education bureaucracy&#8221; as part of President Donald Trump’s promise to dismantle the Department of Education. 
The plan shifts responsibility for several legally required programs from the Education Department to the State, Labor, and Interior Departments, as well as the Department of Health and Human Services. Each of those agencies has signed an interagency agreement with the Education Department to administer the programs.
&#8220;The Trump Administration is taking bold action to break up the federal education bureaucracy and return education to the states,” said Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. “Cutting through layers of red tape in Washington is one essential piece of our final mission. As we partner with these agencies to improve federal programs, we will continue to gather best practices in each state through our 50-state tour, empower local leaders in K-12 education, restore excellence to higher education, and work with Congress to codify these reforms.”
“Together, we will refocus education on students, families, and schools – ensuring federal taxpayer spending is supporting a world-class education system,” McMahon added.

The announcement came after the Education Department posted a video on social media depicting former presidents, from Ronald Reagan to George W. Bush, discussing the need for dramatic educational reform. Trump campaigned on eliminating the Education Department and moving education primarily back to the states. 
“We’re going to be returning education, very simply, back to the states where it belongs, and this is a very popular thing to do, but much more importantly, it’s a common-sense thing to do, and it’s going to work. Absolutely, it’s going to work,&#8221; Trump said earlier this year when he signed an executive order to dismantle the Education Department.

The partnership between Education and Labor will <a href="https://www.ed.gov/media/document/fact-sheet-department-of-education-ed-and-department-of-labor-dol-elementary-and-secondary-education-partnership-112465.pdf">include</a> the administration of elementary, secondary, and postsecondary education programs. This will consist of more than a dozen programs related to education, ranging from grants for local education agencies to education for homeless children. 
The Department of the Interior will administer additional Indian Education programs, while HHS will oversee a program providing child care for parents who are in school and will supervise the work of the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation.
“Medical education must incorporate timely, rigorous science on nutrition, metabolism and all medical subjects. Secretary Kennedy is leading the charge with American medical schools and HHS will encourage foreign medical schools through this partnership,” said HHS Deputy Secretary Jim O’Neill.
In partnership with the State Department, the Education Department will establish the International Education and Foreign Language Studies Partnership to administer specific research, foreign language, and business programs. 
Trump&#8217;s plan was opposed by the National Education Association, a teachers union closely tied to Democrats. Beck Pringle, the association&#8217;s president, said the announcement was &#8220;cruel&#8221; and &#8220;shameful.&#8221;

A couple who won a landmark Supreme Court victory in favor of parental rights said their Christian faith helped them through the dramatic ordeal that began when their daughter took a book pushing transgender ideology home from her Maryland school.
In April, Chris and Melissa Persak, a Catholic family, found themselves and other allied parents arriving at the Supreme Court to hear oral arguments in their case against the Montgomery County Board of Education over whether they had the right to opt their kids out of instruction on transgender ideology. In June, the Persaks, who were represented by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, won a decisive 6-3 victory with the Supreme Court majority declaring that they and other parents had expansive oversight over what their children were taught at schools.
“We said prayers of the Holy Spirit, and just felt this unbelievable calmness as we&#8217;re walking in. Even with the protesters, even with members of the leadership of Montgomery County, who were protesting against us live that day,” Chris told The Daily Wire.
“We just felt like this was the right thing that God was saying, ‘Yep, this is exactly what I asked you to do. It&#8217;s been 24 months, and I know you guys have taken shrapnel and things that have come at you and people threaten your children, and you and your friends, and it was vindication day,” he added.
On Tuesday, the Persaks <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfCn1zWnXGQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener">appeared</a> on Becket’s “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfCn1zWnXGQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Stream of Conscience</a>” podcast alongside Jeff and Svitlana Roman, another family who challenged Montgomery County’s opt-out policies.
The legal battle began in March 2023, when the school board said that it would no longer let parents opt out of books pushing transgender and queer ideology. In response, a group of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish parents challenged the county in Mahmoud v. Taylor.
Svitlana said during her appearance on the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfCn1zWnXGQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener">podcast</a>, which was previewed by The Daily Wire, that she became involved in the legal fight because she just wanted parents like her to have the option to opt their elementary-aged kids from sexualized materials in the classroom.
“All I would like to ask is, one, to make it very clear that the teachers have an optionality to teach it or not, and then two, give the choice to parents to opt in,” she said.
Melissa Persak echoed that sentiment.
“This whole lawsuit was we just wanted the rights to our own children and what they&#8217;re gonna learn,” she said. “It has nothing to do with anybody else&#8217;s kids, but, you know, obviously, in the process, now, we want to protect everyone, all the parents, and all of their children.”

Chris, her husband, added that the entire saga revealed how citizens could fight for their rights under the Constitution. He described being at the Supreme Court as a “powerful moment” because “citizens can stand up for what we believe protected under the Constitution by a system that was essentially set up nearly 250 years ago.”
“We just want the best for our kids and our families and have access to the freedoms granted under the Constitution,” he added. “And the ability to see that happen in real time at the political level has been awesome, it&#8217;s been awe-inspiring.”
When the decision was announced, Chris said the “jubilation was unbelievable.”
Becket Lawyer Will Haun told The Daily Wire that the decision in Mahmoud came 100 years after the Supreme Court issued a decision protecting the rights of parents to send their kids to religious schools.
“It took a long time for the Supreme Court to confirm that parents don&#8217;t lose that freedom when they send their children to public schools,” he said. “But thanks to the heroic example of Chris and Melissa and all the parents who stood with us, that is confirmed in the law now as well.”
In light of the decision, Montgomery County has rolled out a system known as &#8220;refrigerator curriculum,” giving parents broad access to essentially every material used in the classroom. The breadth of material has prompted some parents to worry they might miss something, but Haun said it was a sign that things were changing.
“Business as usual in Montgomery County when it came to opt outs was not acceptable anymore,” he said. “And I think that became abundantly clear with the Supreme Court&#8217;s decisive victory for the parents.”

A historically black university whose president is under scrutiny for plagiarism allegations <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/maryland-college-president-heidi-anderson-plagiarized-dissertation">reported on</a> by The Daily Wire is a &#8220;criminal enterprise to divert federal and state funds,&#8221; according to a federal lawsuit filed by the school&#8217;s former Vice Provost for Academic Affairs.
It is one of four similar lawsuits filed in the last few months against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, its president Heidi Anderson, its provost Rondall Allen, and its diversity, equity, and inclusion czar Jason Casares, that all follow a similar pattern: A faculty member allegedly discovers wrongdoing at the university, and then is retaliated against by the university&#8217;s DEI office.
Claims from the suits paint a picture of a university with almost no academic standards, that admits <a href="https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?163338-University-of-Maryland-Eastern-Shore" target="_blank" rel="noopener">90%</a> of applicants and looks the other way at cheating and truancy to avoid worsening its 17% on-time graduation rate and keep the federal student loan money flowing.
The<a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.mdd.587379/gov.uscourts.mdd.587379.1.0.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> lawsuit filed July 28</a> by Sandeep Gopalan, a Rhodes scholar who until recently was the school&#8217;s vice president for research and vice provost for academic affairs, said that after he claims to have exposed a scheme by Anderson and other top administrators to steal thousands of iPads, the university axed Gopalan&#8217;s program and Ph.D. students in retaliation.
The students were funded by a $4.6 million grant from the federal Department of Education that Gopalan had secured and the university had no ability to terminate, but it dismissed the scholars anyway, falsely suggesting that the Trump administration had cut off funding to the historically black college, he said.
&#8220;As a result of this blatantly unlawful act, highly valuable research on cancer, environmental pollution, and AI, representing thousands of hours of research work by the Plaintiff, Ph.D. students and research staff has been stopped,&#8221; the suit said.
As part of his duties monitoring compliance for the university&#8217;s accreditor, &#8220;Gopalan learned that Rondall Allen and Heidi Anderson were embezzling iPads intended for poor minorities and diverting those resources to their cronies. The thousands of iPads were purchased from a federal grant awarded by the US Department of Commerce,&#8221; the suit said.
&#8220;After being convinced that the scam was organized criminal activity based on direct observation of the devices’ stealthy storage, destruction of evidence, fraudulent documentation, attempts to trick the auditors, the apparent enablement of concealment by University System of Maryland apparatchiks, Dr. Gopalan sent whistleblower letters to federal agencies, the Maryland Attorney General’s Office, and the Board of Regents of the University System of Maryland in June 2024,&#8221; it said.
Soon after, Anderson began asking if the Ph.D. students in Gopalan&#8217;s Futures Institute program, the highest-performing students at the school, were black. &#8220;Gopalan explained that students were selected based on strict merit, but the projects had a focus on minority populations. Anderson expressed displeasure,&#8221; the suit said.
In December 2024, the lawsuit states he filed additional complaints &#8220;about Heidi Anderson and Rondall Allen’s embezzlement, diversion of federal funds, fraudulent reporting of student data to deceive the government, fraud in connection with physical plant and facilities,&#8221; including to Chancellor Jay Perman, who oversees all public universities in the state.
According to the complaint, &#8220;Anderson and Jason Casares began conspiring to steal Dr. Gopalan’s Futures Institute grant of $4.6 million,&#8221; and notified Ph.D. students that their scholarships were being revoked. The Department of Education had to step in, <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.mdd.587379/gov.uscourts.mdd.587379.1.6.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">writing</a> that the grant had not been terminated and ordering Maryland to restore it.
The willingness to terminate the university&#8217;s brightest scholars was all the more remarkable because &#8220;UMES has some of the worst student outcomes in the United States under Rondall Allen and Heidi Anderson. The 4-year graduation rate is 17% whereas the 6-year graduation rate is about 35% and graduates’ median incomes are on par with high school graduates. To Dr. Gopalan’s astonishment, Rondall Allen and Dr. Heidi Anderson were indifferent to these outcomes and appeared resentful whenever he mentioned the need to improve,&#8221; it added.
Anderson is a pharmacist, and Allen, another pharmacist, was appointed Provost in 2022. &#8220;Allen has no record of original intellectual publications and had copied and pasted Dr. Gopalan’s work to steal credit,&#8221; the suit said.
The suit asked the court to &#8220;direct the University System of Maryland Board of Regents and the Office of Attorney General to claw back Jay Perman’s $1.4 million salary, Heidi Anderson’s $450,000 salary, and Rondall Allen’s $300,000 salary and proportionate amounts from Casares.&#8221;
On Monday, Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown filed a <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.mdd.587379/gov.uscourts.mdd.587379.15.1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">response</a> in court. It noted that Gopalan was acting as his own lawyer, and sought to have the case dismissed based in part on legal technicalities, the claim that the public college and its officials had &#8220;sovereign immunity,” and that he did not provide enough detail showing he was a victim of intentional racial discrimination.
<h2>&#8216;Private looting opportunity&#8217;</h2>
A <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.mdd.587750/gov.uscourts.mdd.587750.1.0.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">second lawsuit</a> was filed on August 1 under the pseudonym Jacob Doe, a faculty member who says he &#8220;directly observed the top administrators of the university engaging in criminal activities.&#8221;
When Anderson took over in 2018, UMES had an enrollment of 4,800; it is now only 3,000. The passing rate in Anderson&#8217;s own field of pharmacy fell from 95% to 57%. Allen became provost a few years later, despite a background in &#8220;discount pharmacies, and no record meriting a provost position,&#8221; it said.
&#8220;Plaintiff found one cause of the university’s terrible outcomes: rogue administrators led by the president Heidi Anderson and provost Rondall Allen turning the vast investments by the federal and state governments in the university into a private looting opportunity. Unlike other normal universities where administrators are appointed pursuant to merit, credentials, and experience, at UMES many were appointed based on a propensity for corruption and collusion in Anderson and Allen’s schemes,&#8221; the suit said.
&#8220;After directly witnessing and determining that there was organized criminal activity to siphon off federal and state funds led by Defendant 1 Heidi Anderson and Rondall Allen, in Summer and Fall 2024, Plaintiff filed reports with the USM Chancellor and Board, and state and federal officials. The USM initiated a cosmetic investigation – intended to save Anderson rather than determine the truth,&#8221; it said.
&#8220;Upon learning about the Plaintiff&#8217;s complaints, the Defendants took retaliatory actions under the guise of a fake complaint alleging in December 2024 that the Plaintiff had created a &#8216;hostile working environment&#8217; for one temporary worker whose contract was due to expire in two months&#8221; – an Iranian student who, the complaint claimed, was allowed to stay in the country as a reward for going along with the scheme.
Casares, the DEI director, accused Doe of sexually harassing the temp, even though no evidence was provided that the pair had ever been in a room alone together. Casares himself left his previous job after being <a href="https://www.wthr.com/article/news/local/update-iu-administrator-casares-resigns-amid-sexual-assault-claim/531-610f5e2c-e658-4b3b-a008-e7d1df4b7e4c" target="_blank" rel="noopener">accused</a> of sexual assault; the suit said &#8220;Casares is unemployable in US higher education and his grossly inflated salary and continued promotion by Anderson are bribes&#8221; for &#8220;intimidating faculty and staff who oppose illegal activities.&#8221;
The temp worker&#8217;s primary boss was a different professor, who witnessed every encounter between Doe and the temp, but Casares did not interview him, the suit said.
Casares was accused of telling the temp worker that “people say Turkish women are beautiful, but I prefer Persian women,&#8221; and &#8220;all work and no fun makes [her] a dull girl.&#8221; Doe said that these statements were fabricated, but that they would not meet the standard for sexual harassment even if they were true.
He said the temp worker had falsified timesheets, leading him to admonish her, and the false claim was in retaliation. Nonetheless, Doe was suspended, banned from campus and his students were told that he was fired. He filed a complaint against Casares, which was ignored, he said.
<h2>A grades for illiterates</h2>
A similar <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.mdd.589179/gov.uscourts.mdd.589179.1.0.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lawsuit was filed on August 22</a> by Ciu Fang, an &#8220;award-winning computer science lecturer&#8221; who said she was retaliated against for raising concerns that University of Maryland Eastern Shore had almost no academic standards and condoned cheating in order to keep student tuition flowing.
With enrollment plummeting, the school seemingly began relying on foreign students from countries like Iran to fill slots. Although the HBCU was a low-performing institution that few Americans wanted to attend, foreigners who wanted to come to America could use it to gain a student visa.
Iranians began taking over the faculty as well, and Asad Azemi became chair of the computer science program. &#8220;Since his arrival, Azemi expressed a preference for hiring Iranians and manipulated hiring processes to create vacancies for his friends,&#8221; the suit said, citing one job search in which 80% of candidates were Iranian.
Azemi took all the course preparation that Fang had created and appropriated it for himself, while pushing her out of a teaching slot after she was unwilling to give students passing grades even if they skipped class and did not know the material, she said.
Fang said the college admitted students with low high school grades and SAT scores, and most proved unable to master the content in her advanced computer science class, with many not showing up to class at all. But when Azemi taught the course, the failure rate was 0%.
&#8220;Many students plagiarized code from the internet and were unable to answer basic syntax questions&#8230; Dr. Azemi awarded nearly all students a grade of B or higher,&#8221; Fang said. &#8220;Azemi encourages cheating and apparently fraudulent practices to maintain a false facade of enrollment to pad his salary and deceive the federal government,&#8221; she added, saying he pressured her to change students&#8217; grades.
On March 31, Fang emailed Chancellor Perman and &#8220;filed a complaint via the USM Fraud Hotline with information about enrollment, grading, and attendance fraud in specific courses,&#8221; but investigators never contacted Fang for more information, she said.
&#8220;Perman knew that he would be embarrassed if the fraud were to be publicly revealed because of scandals at other universities under his watch,&#8221; the suit said.
(The Daily Wire exposed the president of Maryland&#8217;s flagship campus at College Park as a plagiarist<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/university-of-maryland-president-copied-rocket-science-paper-from-aussie-student" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> more than a year ago</a>, but there have been no repercussions.)
Perman&#8217;s assistant merely referred her to Casares, who wrote a report taking Azemi&#8217;s side, without interviewing Fang&#8217;s witnesses, she said. Then Anderson personally <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.mdd.589179/gov.uscourts.mdd.589179.1.25_1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">emailed Fang to terminate her</a> without explanation. &#8220;The abrupt unlawful firing whilst the appeal process was ongoing is illegal retaliation,&#8221; Fang said.
Fang said Anderson developed personal animosity toward her years earlier. Fang had also worked as a personal trainer at the school&#8217;s gym, and &#8220;Heidi Anderson, who is obese,&#8221; asked a school coach to help her lose weight. The coach refused to continue helping Anderson due to her poor attitude, and delegated it to Fang. Anderson insisted on losing weight while refusing to do the necessary workouts, and became &#8220;resentful,&#8221; she said.
On October 31, Maryland filed a <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.mdd.587379/gov.uscourts.mdd.587379.15.1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reply</a> to the federal court that was similar to its motion in the first case, raising technical legal objections without denying specific allegations.
<h2>Director of Human Resources</h2>
The university&#8217;s former Director of Human Resources, Rosalie Hornbuckle, also filed a <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.mdd.589179/gov.uscourts.mdd.589179.1.13.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">whistleblower complaint</a>, though not a lawsuit. Hornbuckle said she was terminated several months into her job after identifying &#8220;payment to individuals who were placed in fictitious jobs&#8221; and other misconduct.
The complaint alleged a large number of employees remained on paid leave for long periods after being accused of wrongdoing. She said in one case, Casares placed a staff member on paid leave after a complaint of discriminating against white students; six months later, Casares claimed that he had been investigating but had not taken any notes.
As another cited example, a finance employee arrested with a &#8220;large amount of marijuana packaged for sale&#8221; was provided severance instead of simply being terminated; Hornbuckle couldn&#8217;t understand why until learning that he was the nephew of the school&#8217;s budget director, she said.
The Daily Wire previously reported on a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/maryland-college-president-heidi-anderson-plagiarized-dissertation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fourth lawsuit</a>, by former agriculture professor Donna Satterlee, who said that a Kenyan who was &#8220;incapable of writing in English at the level required of university professor&#8221; took over her department and made her do much of the work, while black faculty took credit and received much higher salaries.
After she called for a study that would publish salary information broken down by race, Casares&#8217;s DEI department accused her of bullying her boss, and she was placed on &#8220;transitional terminal leave.&#8221;
On October 31, Maryland’s attorney general filed a <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.mdd.586969/gov.uscourts.mdd.586969.21.1_1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reply</a> in court saying that Satterlee signed papers agreeing not to sue the university in exchange for nine months of severance, and that the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission declined to pursue a complaint she filed with it.
<h2>Cyber Warrior Diversity Program</h2>
The Daily Wire separately obtained a contract signed in August 2019 by President Anderson with Lance Andre Lucas for a &#8220;Cyber Warrior Diversity Program.&#8221; The next year, Lucas<a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-md/pr/baltimore-businessman-lance-lucas-sentenced-18-months-federal-prison-honest-services-wire" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> pleaded guilty</a> to bribing a state lawmaker $42,500 to create a state law pushing such a program, because he anticipated it would benefit his company.
“I’m from Baltimore for real, for real Baltimore … this is the least illegal thing that I’ve ever done,” he told Maryland Delegate Cheryl Glenn as he handed her cash in his Porsche.
The contract signed by Anderson said &#8220;the State of Maryland is paying a total of $10,000 dollars [sic] per student. The Cyber Warrior Diversity program direct cost [sic] are $7000 or 70%. University of Maryland Eastern Shore Cyber Warrior Diversity Program administrative cost [sic] are $3000 or 30%.&#8221;
&#8220;Once payment is made to University of Maryland Eastern Shore by the State of Maryland trough [sic] MHEC they [sic] have 30-90 days period of grace to pay Digit All City for program direct cost [sic] incurred,&#8221; it continued.
It said Lucas&#8217;s firm would run a computer science course, saying &#8220;The SWDP [sic] courses offer the hard and soft skills needed to work in this industry.&#8221; It is not clear why the school did not simply use its existing computer science program–taught by faculty like Fang–for that.
The<a href="https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/2018RS/bills/sb/sb0615E.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> bill</a> creating the program allocated $2.5 million to black colleges to create programs &#8220;to train students in computer networking and cybersecurity,&#8221; and said &#8220;the governing entity at each institution is responsible for administering the program at that institution.&#8221;
Spokesmen for Anderson and Chancellor Perman both declined to comment on the lawsuits against the Eastern Shore college, citing policies on ongoing litigation.
Anderson hired a lawyer to threaten The Daily Wire with a lawsuit after it presented <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/maryland-college-president-heidi-anderson-plagiarized-dissertation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">side-by-side academic papers</a> showing thousands of words of her dissertation were identical to older papers by others. University spokesman Robert Vickers said the lawyer was hired by Anderson personally, not by the school.

This Black College Is A ‘Criminal Enterprise,’ Ex-Top Official Says In Lawsuit

The Regents of the Texas A&amp;M University System voted unanimously on Thursday to adopt a policy requiring college presidents to sign off on any course that could be interpreted as pushing “race and gender ideology or topics related to sexual orientation or gender identity.”
The new policy seeks to prevent another controversy like the one that erupted at Texas A&amp;M earlier this year when an English professor was filmed pushing pro-LGBT talking points during a children’s literature course. The policy approved by regents defines race ideology as “attempts to shame a particular race or ethnicity” or anything that “promotes activism on issues related to race or ethnicity rather than academic instruction,” The Texas Tribune <a href="https://www.texastribune.org/2025/11/13/texas-am-regents-race-gender-ideology-course-audit/">reported</a>. Gender ideology is defined under the policy as “a concept of self-assessed gender identity replacing, and disconnected from, the biological category of sex.”
The policy also prohibits professors from teaching any material that is not consistent with the approved syllabus. Enforcement of the policy is set to begin at all 12 colleges in the Texas A&amp;M University System in the spring 2026 semester.
“What we’re doing is pretty simple,” regent Sam Torn told The Texas Tribune. “It’s not as complex. We’re simply making sure that we do educate, and we’re simply making sure that we teach what the course syllabus specifies that we teach.”

Brian Harrison and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-texas-am-student-booted-from-lecture-after-objecting-to-professor-pushing-radical-gender-theory?author=Zach+Jewell&amp;category=undefined&amp;elementPosition=6&amp;row=3&amp;rowHeadline=Latest+News&amp;rowType=Vertical+Carousel&amp;title=WATCH%3A+Texas+A%26M+Student+Booted+From+Lecture+After+Objecting+To+Professor+Pushing+Radical+Gender+Theory">first reported</a> by The Daily Wire in September showed children’s literature professor Dr. Melissa McCoul advocating for leftist views on race and gender and asking one student who pushed back on her arguments to leave a lecture. The children’s literature course included material that advocated for introducing leftist gender ideas to children. One of the slides in the class was titled “Let’s talk gender in children’s lit!” and argued that “Childhood is the time for figuring out how to be a boy, girl, man, woman, or another gender.”
In a phone call with the student who publicly opposed the leftism espoused in the literature course, then-Texas A&amp;M President Mark Welsh said, “There’s not a problem” with teaching LGBT literature as long as the university makes it clear it will be part of a class. When the student asked Welsh if any more changes would be made, such as firing McCoul, Welsh accused the student of attempting to “pick a fight,” adding that the university would not punish the professor.
Welsh <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/texas-am-president-to-resign-after-leftist-politics-infiltrated-university-childrens-lit-course">stepped down</a> as Texas A&amp;M president less than two weeks after the videos and details of the children’s literature class were made public. A rule implemented in September requires that all course content at each of the Texas A&amp;M System’s 12 schools be audited.
“It’s a serious system-wide review of every course, every syllabus,” Torn said on Thursday. “We are examining the body of knowledge behind each degree, low-producing programs, workforce relevance and financial stewardship.”
Rep. Harrison <a href="https://x.com/brianeharrison/status/1989310142291100113">celebrated</a> after the regents approved the new policy on race and gender ideology, saying that his use of social media to highlight the issue at Texas A&amp;M “has done more this year to combat woke indoctrination than the entire Texas House and Texas Senate… combined.”
Some professors are concerned that the policy will only add confusion.
Geography professor Andrew Klein told the board of regents, “The vagueness of the language is problematic. Faculty are now assuming that all instructions in the topic of concern will be prohibited. Will subjects like medicine, public health and law, where such content is required to prepare professionals for the Texas workforce, be disallowed?”
Philosophy professor Martin Peterson added that academics must “seek the truth,” arguing, “When we seek the truth, we sometimes have to explore ideas that touch on controversial issues.”
“It is not always clear what counts as advocating for an ideology in those contexts,” Peterson said.
European history professor Miranda Sachs argued that the new rule would prevent her from addressing certain historical topics, such as the Holocaust. Regent John Bellinger responded to Sachs’s comment, saying, “There’s got to be some common sense in this.”
“I think we’re taking it a little bit too far when [we say] that we’re not going to teach about what happened in world wars,” Bellinger said.

Conservatives attending the final stop on the “This is the Turning Point” tour at the University of California, Berkeley, on Monday night were met by hundreds of leftist agitators as police in riot gear tried to keep the protesters contained.
Protesters, some of whom wore keffiyehs, showed up outside the venue on campus hours before the event started and confronted the attendees as they lined up to enter the building. At one point, an agitator got into a fistfight with a man wearing a red Turning Point USA shirt. The event attendee was pictured with a bloodied face, as both he and the agitator were detained by police, The New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/11/11/us-news/bloody-brawl-breaks-out-as-agitators-protest-tpusa-event-at-uc-berkeley-in-california/">reported</a>.

Police confirmed that two people were arrested, including one person charged with battery, following the fistfight. It&#8217;s unclear if one of the men involved in the fistfight was the person charged with battery. Police set up a barricade between protesters and attendees before and after the event as agitators lit flares and shouted at the conservative attendees. Two more people were arrested after attempting to get past the barricade, The Mercury News <a href="https://www.mercurynews.com/2025/11/10/uc-berkeley-turning-point-usa-arrests/">reported</a>.

The event at Cal Berkeley, one of the most liberal universities in America, featured comedian Rob Schneider and Christian apologist and writer Dr. Frank Turek. It was the final event on the TPUSA college tour that Charlie Kirk began in September. Kirk was assassinated while speaking to college students at Utah Valley University on the first stop of the tour on September 10.
Andrew Kolvet, the chief spokesman for TPUSA and executive producer of &#8220;The Charlie Kirk Show,&#8221; said &#8220;Antifa thugs&#8221; were responsible for attempting to stop Monday&#8217;s event. Even as left-wing protesters crowded outside, the event went ahead as planned before a packed audience inside.

For all the attention Generation Z gets, we need to start talking about Generation Alpha while there is still time to save them from their older siblings’ dismal futures. Born between 2010 and 2024, Gen Alpha is the youngest living age demographic with its members ranging from toddlers to younger adolescents. Most still have all of high school ahead of them and none have entered the workforce as adults.
American twelfth graders, who are on the younger side of the Gen Z cohort, are at their <a href="https://www.wsj.com/us-news/education/test-scores-low-reading-math-naep-d87099b6?mod=Searchresults&amp;pos=1&amp;page=1">lowest reading proficiency levels</a> on record. Our broken education system has enabled that steady decline over the last two decades as K-12 schools push forward failing students who cannot read, and college curriculum has made it possible to earn a degree <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2024/11/the-elite-college-students-who-cant-read-books/679945/">without reading a whole book</a>. Poor literacy levels have, of course, led to a national crisis with <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/07/05/lifestyle/gen-z-turns-to-ai-for-homework-essays-and-college-apps/">writing ability</a>.
This confluence of trends — combined with the rise of AI — risks Gen Alpha’s future success in work and in life. The good news is that the solution is found at home. Parents can make the home life more conducive to their children’s future success by prioritizing off-screen reading … yes, physical books. Reading books is vital to keeping children ahead of the AI curve. And the home is where children need to become good readers so they can go on to become good writers.
Writing is the necessary transferable skill young people must perform to apply critical thinking, self-awareness, and logic to their jobs, tasks, and everyday lives. Lack of proficiency in the classroom leads to lack of accountability and responsibility in adulthood.
It is impossible to be a good writer without being a good reader, which makes fixing reading proficiency all the more urgent for today’s elementary and middle schoolers. As <a href="https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/agentic-ai-vs-generative-ai">generative and agentic AI</a> reorganize the workforce, high social and economic status will not be won by those that can simply use AI well, but those who think better than AI and can apply the technology in the production of new knowledge.
The urgency is today. A grown adult with poor reading proficiency is already lost and will spend the rest of his life behind the curve of those that can read, write, think, and do better. That string of verbs is not a list — it is a sequence of inseverable skills necessary to achieve success. If that prognostication seems bleak, that’s because children who use AI to do schoolwork do not see the pitfall lying beyond short-term convenience.
Children&#8217;s futures may come to resemble Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World in which the lower castes of menial workers toil under the elite few who are capable of intelligent output. AI <a href="https://www.weforum.org/stories/2023/02/ai-can-catalyze-and-inhibit-your-creativity-here-is-how/">does not create</a> new ideas or knowledge; it produces and iterates content based on past information and results. It yields answers derivative of other people’s intellectual labor without activating or engaging critical reasoning skills in the user.
The solution is for children to read good books that stand the test of time and have complex sentence structure. Reading early and reading often in childhood <a href="https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/why_reading_is_important_children_brain_development#:~:text=We%20discovered%20that%20reading%20for,time%20spent%20on%20electronic%20devices.">unlocks</a> intellectual and productive potential <a href="https://www.worldbank.org/en/topic/education/brief/foundational-learning">later in life</a>. Parents should replace at least some of their children’s screentime with good books. The number of books children read is less important than the quality of stories they read. They should mix non-fiction with fiction. The topics and sub-genres do not matter. It is the complement between truth in fact, and truth in expression that helps cultivate minds and critical reasoning.
Millennials are the parents of Gen Alpha and their childhoods model how to select rewarding books in a digital age filled with screentime. Millennials grew up on Reading Rainbow and Wishbone. Reading Rainbow brought children’s books to life with lively narration and Wishbone retold William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Walter Scott, Walter Irving, and other great authors. 
Parents can find worthwhile books about the animals, fantasy settings, sports, historical figures, and situations depicted in their children’s favorite shows, movies, and games. That is the strategy Reading Rainbow and Wishbone deployed: limited but enriching television content as a tool to catalyze lifelong love of reading and intellectual exploration in children. 
Technology has crushed the inner drive and desire to read, and AI is poised to turn that absence into personal failure on a mass scale. Meeting children where they are with a physical book can transition them away from complete dependence on digital technology for entertainment. Exposing children to slightly more literature can open up their worlds and increase chances for success.
I already dubbed Gen Z as the <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/gen-z-shaping-itself-into-wasted-generation">“Wasted Generation”</a> in early 2024, and that still holds true. But if nothing changes substantially, Gen Alpha will suffer from more severe and longer-lasting consequences than the arbitrary concentrated learning-loss Gen Z underwent during COVID-19.
Even with the lightning speed of President Trump’s educational reforms, it will still take years for reforms implemented today to take hold and reverse prevailing trends. Let’s focus on where we can make a long-term difference for most people. That focus needs to be on Gen Alpha. Let’s help them now while we can. Cultivating and encouraging reading at home is the best way for parents to set their children up for success in our brave new world.

Students at Michigan State University hoping to become the educators of the next generation are forced to take a race-centered course that follows &#8220;the guiding principles of the Black Lives Matter&#8221; movement and requires students to read from a book condemning &#8220;whiteness.&#8221;
Course materials obtained by the <a href="https://yaf.org/news/race-obsessed-course-forced-on-future-educators-at-michigan-state/">Young America&#8217;s Foundation</a> group on MSU&#8217;s campus and shared with The Daily Wire show that one class for future teachers pushes leftist theories on race. The introductory three-credit class, &#8220;<a href="https://reg.msu.edu/Courses/Search.aspx?CourseID=342088#Results">TE 101: Social Foundations of Justice and Equity in Education</a>,&#8221; is required for all Secondary Education majors at MSU and is typically taken before their junior year. TE 101&#8217;s course description states that it emphasizes &#8220;racial justice, equity, and social identity markers.&#8221;
The syllabus for TE 101 states that the class is &#8220;committed to the Guiding Principles of the Black Lives Matter Movement, Learning for Justice’s Social Justice Standards, and the principles of the Abolitionist Teaching Network.&#8221;
One Michigan State education major, who wished to remain anonymous, told The Daily Wire that 90-100% of the class is focused on race.
&#8220;This class is an indoctrination of modern racial ideology,&#8221; the student said.
Asked if sitting through hours of leftist ideology becomes discouraging, the student replied, &#8220;No, it actually makes me want to pursue this degree more. It makes me want to be able to teach children instead of these other people.&#8221;
&#8220;Because I feel like there is a lack of conservatives in education,&#8221; the student added. &#8220;We see how the other side has done with these students.&#8221;
The only book TE 101 students are required to read for the semester includes a section that condemns &#8220;whiteness&#8221; as a privilege that &#8220;will never allow true solidarity to take place.&#8221;
The <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Want-More-Than-Survive-Abolitionist/dp/0807069159">book</a>, &#8220;We Want to Do More Than Survive: Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom,&#8221; by Bettina Love, &#8220;argues that the US educational system is maintained by and profits from the suffering of children of color.&#8221; The author writes that for education reform to take place, leaders must &#8220;approach education with the imagination, determination, boldness, and urgency of an abolitionist.&#8221;
One excerpt from the book focuses on how &#8220;whiteness&#8221; cannot be included in the fight for education reform.
<blockquote>“Whiteness cannot enter spaces focused on abolitionist teaching. Whiteness is addicted to centering itself, addicted to attention, and making everyone feel guilty for working toward its elimination. Whiteness will never allow true solidarity to take place. Those who cling to their Whiteness cannot participate in abolitionist teaching because they are a distraction, are unproductive, and will undermine freedom at every step, sometimes in the name of social justice. Being an abolitionist means you are ready to lose something, you are ready to let go of your privilege, you are ready to be in solidarity with dark people by recognizing your Whiteness in dark spaces, recognizing how it can take up space if unchecked, using your Whiteness in White spaces to advocate for and with dark people. And you understand that your White privilege allows you to take risks that dark people cannot take in the fight for educational justice.”</blockquote>
Each of the three groups mentioned as being pivotal to the class has a history of advocating for radical leftist ideas. The course syllabus links to &#8220;<a href="https://www.dcareaeducators4socialjustice.org/black-lives-matter/13-guiding-principles">Guiding Principles</a>&#8221; of the BLM movement, which include radical leftist ideas on race and gender. Among the 13 BLM movement principles listed on the website for &#8220;D.C. Area Educators for Social Justice&#8221; are commitments to be &#8220;queer affirming&#8221; and &#8220;trans affirming.&#8221; The &#8220;Guiding Principle&#8221; under transgender affirmation vows to &#8220;dismantle cis-gender privilege and uplift Black trans folk, especially Black trans women who continue to be disproportionately impacted by trans-antagonistic violence.&#8221;

<a href="https://www.learningforjustice.org/about">Learning for Justice</a>, the second group listed on the syllabus, is part of the Southern Poverty Law Center, which aims to be &#8220;a catalyst for racial justice in the South and beyond, working in partnership with communities to dismantle white supremacy, strengthen intersectional movements and advance the human rights of all people.&#8221; The SPLC has been condemned for placing Christian and conservative organizations on its &#8220;Hate Map&#8221; that publicly tracks groups and individuals that it deems radical and hateful. Learning for Justice&#8217;s &#8220;<a href="https://www.learningforjustice.org/sites/default/files/2022-09/LFJ-Social-Justice-Standards-September-2022-09292022.pdf">Social Justice Standards</a>&#8221; seek to teach children as young as five years old about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
The Abolitionist Teaching Network, another group that guides the MSU education class, encourages teachers to become activists.
&#8220;Abolitionist Teaching Network leverages teachers&#8217; and workers&#8217; power by offering resources for agitators and activists,&#8221; the group <a href="https://www.ewlhub.org/professional-development-resource-guide/abolitionist-teaching-network-">states</a>.
Another MSU education student who previously took TE 101 and spoke to The Daily Wire on condition of anonymity, said that the hyper-focus on race continues in courses beyond TE 101, especially in &#8220;<a href="https://reg.msu.edu/Courses/Search.aspx?CourseID=342088#Results">TE 102: Pedagogy and Politics of Justice and Equity in Education</a>.&#8221;
&#8220;I&#8217;ve had to write papers on different identities. You can choose race, gender, sexuality, income status. I think the goal is to have most students write about their whiteness,&#8221; the student said. &#8220;They teach that white people can&#8217;t see their identity. The core tenet of these classes feels like white people, especially white men, are the number one objection to what stands in the way of a better education system and a better society.&#8221;
The conservative student group, Young America&#8217;s Foundation, which first highlighted TE 101 at MSU, called the course&#8217;s content &#8220;divisive and discriminatory.&#8221;
&#8220;This kind of rhetoric only pushes Americans further apart, and is not only a waste of taxpayer money at a publicly funded university, but also a waste of students’ time,&#8221; Michigan State YAF added in a statement. &#8220;Do we really want our future educators teaching our children that an entire race is evil?&#8221;
Michigan State defended the class. A spokesperson for the university told The Daily Wire that the course &#8220;aligns with national teacher preparation standards, and its associated curriculum is reviewed through well-established academic governance processes at the department, college, and institutional level.&#8221; The spokesperson added that courses and curricula are approved by the department, which requires sign-off from the dean, and then approval by an independent curriculum committee.
Courses and curricula are also reviewed by the Office of Accreditation, Assessment, Curriculum, and Compliance and the University Curriculum Committee. After those reviews, the University Curriculum Committee votes for final approval.
&#8220;Michigan State University remains firmly committed to academic freedom, scholarly inquiry, and the preparation of educators who are well equipped to serve all students,&#8221; the MSU spokesperson added.
Since coming into office in January, President Donald Trump has signed executive orders seeking to crack down on DEI teachings at public universities. The Trump administration has <a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-dei-universities-investigated-f89dc9ec2a98897577ed0a6c446fae7b">launched</a> investigations into dozens of universities across the country over accusations that they pushed DEI programs on students and faculty, which led to racial discrimination.

Loudoun County Public Schools pursued punishment against boys who complained about being filmed by a girl in the boys&#8217; locker room — and not the girl who was filming, who identifies as transgender — even though the girl repeatedly changed her story about purported anti-transgender harassment, a lawsuit filed Wednesday said.
The Virginia school district doled out 10-day suspensions to boys who asked each other why a girl was in the boys&#8217; locker room, even though officials&#8217; interviews with a multitude of teachers and students failed to corroborate the girl&#8217;s claims that the boys had denigrated, threatened, and ordered her to leave, the suit said.
A lawsuit filed Wednesday accuses district officials of deleting at least one other recording the female student made of boys using the bathroom, leaking confidential information to a left-wing PAC that it says defamed the boys, and declining to discipline a Muslim student who was uncomfortable with a girl in the boys&#8217; locker room, only two Christian ones.
The incident occurred at the same school, Stone Bridge, where a<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/loudoun-county-schools-tried-to-conceal-sexual-assault-against-daughter-in-bathroom-father-says"> transgender rapist struck</a> in 2021. Loudoun County Public Schools officials covered up that rape because it would have posed an impediment to passing a transgender policy, Policy 8040, which allowed transgenders to use the opposite sex&#8217;s bathrooms and locker rooms.
The school district is now using that policy to go after the pair of Christian boys at the center of this case — even after the federal Department of Education&#8217;s Office of Civil Rights said last month that the district could lose federal funding unless it cancels the boys&#8217; suspensions and apologizes to them.
Lawyers for America First Legal and the Founding Freedoms Law Center, which filed the suit on behalf of two boys, said it&#8217;s another example of the school district engaging in misconduct to promote transgender ideology.
The girl originally stated that the threat occurred on March 17, but later clarified it was on March 21. Originally, she said a trio of boys &#8220;constantly screamed at the [female student] calling him a ‘Boy-girl,’ ‘It,’ and ‘Girl Female,’&#8221; and &#8220;got in her face,&#8221; saying &#8220;if you ever come in here again, we&#8217;re gonna beat your ass.&#8221; But she later said she didn&#8217;t know who shouted at her, and that she &#8220;barely remembered&#8221; the incident.
The school interviewed more than a dozen teachers and students, none of whom had heard these comments, and even the girl&#8217;s friends stated that she never mentioned it to them when discussing her locker room woes, the suit said.
One of the boys told investigators that none of them had ever addressed any comment to the girl or used any disparaging language, but simply asked in a conversation among themselves why there was a girl in the locker room.
The girl specifically said that one of the students who made the threat was a Muslim student. The most specific allegations were against that student: she said that during science class last year, he also told her &#8220;You guys are a disappointment to humanity,&#8221; referring to transgenders, and would &#8220;constantly misgender&#8221; her.
Loudoun County Public Schools&#8217; Title IX investigators determined that the Muslim student did not make the &#8220;disappointment to humanity&#8221; comment, the<a href="https://aflegal.org/press-release/america-first-legal-and-founding-freedoms-law-center-file-federal-lawsuit-against-lcps-seeking-emergency-relief-to-stop-boys-suspension-for-complaining-about-a-girl-in-their-locker-room/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=ncl_amplify&amp;utm_campaign=251029-afl_email_395_amended_complaint_against_loudoun_county_public_schools_revealing_new_details_of_sham_title_ix_investigation_and_alleging_conspiracy_with_a_political_action_committee_to_retaliate_against_students_full_file_10292025"> suit</a> said. Still, the school system sided with the girl, citing her &#8220;credibility.&#8221;
In disciplinary proceedings against the boys, Loudoun County Public Schools also stated that a video captured one of the students calling her a &#8220;girl-boy,&#8221; even though documents obtained through the lawsuit show that school investigators specifically said they heard no such thing. A speaker can be heard saying “girl-boy” three times between the start of the video and the 0:05 timestamp. The speaker then yells the same phrase twice at the 0:06 timestamp and the 0:08 timestamp,&#8221; the Title IX charges said. In reality, the Title IX investigator said, “I cannot understand any audio that’s on it.”
The school system dropped the charges against the Muslim boy while pursuing them against the Christian boys. It sent the Muslim boy a letter stating that the investigation was closed because, even if the allegations were true, they would not constitute prohibited harassment. Then they alleged the same facts to the Christian boys and said they remained under investigation.
The charges against all three boys left out the &#8220;beat your ass&#8221; comment, seeming to acknowledge that there was no evidence for it while avoiding mention of it to inflate the girl&#8217;s credibility.
Charging documents stated that the boy who asked, &#8220;Why is there a girl in here?&#8221; also said, &#8220;Get out of here,&#8221; suggesting that he was ordering the girl to leave. This contradicts the school district&#8217;s transcript, which said &#8220;get out of here&#8221; came from a different speaker. &#8220;&#8216;Get out of here&#8217; was clearly said from a distance away from the Female Student&#8230;as a colloquial expression of disbelief, similar to saying “You’ve got to be joking,&#8217;” the lawsuit said. It said the recordings were made in a noisy, crowded locker room.
The school system seized the girl&#8217;s phone and &#8220;deleted a recording of yet another boy using the bathroom whom the Female Student had recorded, thus denying the Plaintiffs the opportunity to present potentially exonerating evidence,&#8221; the lawsuit said. A fourth recording went missing.
The school district dropped charges against the Muslim boy after a mosque official reached out to school board member Arben Istrefi, who said he was doing what he could to resolve the situation. On May 20, Newsweek reported that School Board Chair Melinda Mansfield said it was &#8220;untrue&#8221; that the boys were being subjected to the Title IX disciplinary process, even though it was true, the lawsuit said.
Loudoun County Public Schools officials leaked confidential information to a left-wing political action committee, Loudoun for All, that &#8220;raises and spends money for attack advertisements against school board candidates and members who disagree with the policies and decisions of LCPS’s Superintendent Aaron Spence and the school board chair, Melinda Mansfield,&#8221; the suit said.
That PAC put out a press release that represented that &#8220;24 staff and student witnesses” corroborated that the boys had been engaged in “relentless harassment over the course of a year&#8221; against the female student — a claim that was false, the lawsuit said.
Loudoun for All overlaps with a group that, The Daily Wire reported in 2021, rallied to dox, hack, and<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/loudoun-teachers-target-parents-critical-race-theory-hacking"> punish parents</a> who questioned school policies.
The school system&#8217;s cover-up of the transgender rapist likely would have gone uncovered were it not for the county&#8217;s sheriff, a Republican. The sheriff is investigating the girl for recording in a locker room, though it is unclear how Loudoun County Public Schools&#8217; apparent deletion of some of the evidence could affect that.

University of Maryland administrators told its Turning Point USA chapter that it may not be able to host a Daily Wire journalist on Wednesday, unless the chapter pays for extensive additional security.
The event, featuring Daily Wire Senior Editor Cabot Phillips, is virtually identical to the classes that occur every day on college campuses — except with an affable, center-right journalist at the head of the room instead of a cantankerous leftist professor.
That The Daily Wire has exposed not one, but two University of Maryland presidents for plagiarism — including the president of its flagship College Park campus, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/university-of-maryland-president-copied-rocket-science-paper-from-aussie-student" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Darryll Pines</a>, whose capitulation to Hamas supporters this publication has also chronicled — suggests that the college’s motives for the security requirement may be less than honorable.
Turning Point isn&#8217;t being charged for security because its members might be unruly. It&#8217;s because the university believes that its own students will commit ideologically motivated violence — and, instead of addressing that, it&#8217;s punishing their prospective victims. The group&#8217;s founder, Charlie Kirk, was assassinated on a college campus six weeks ago, ending a career dedicated to facilitating ideological diversity and open debate at universities.
Maryland has taken the wrong lesson from that assassination.
Conservatives make up the majority of the voting public, as evidenced by the most recent national popular vote. If being exposed to center-right ideas is so unusual for college students that it would trigger violent rage, that&#8217;s the issue. Coming across someone like Phillips on campus shouldn&#8217;t be cause for violence. It should be just another Wednesday.
The move continues a pattern of selective commitment to free speech for Pines, who vociferously defended an anti-Israel group&#8217;s right to mark the first anniversary of Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel, then threatened to<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/university-of-maryland-president-copied-rocket-science-paper-from-aussie-student" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> call the police</a> on a Jewish woman for complaining about it.
Jewish parents asked Pines, who is Black, to engage in a thought experiment: would he be as supportive if the KKK were burning crosses on campus? The analogy went right over his head, and in a twist of unfathomable irony, Pines banned all events that day because of what he suggested were anti-black threats and the prospect of violence by Jews. Then he paid the school&#8217;s Students for Justice in Palestine chapter, which proudly says it supports &#8220;armed struggle,&#8221; a<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/university-will-pay-100000-to-anti-israel-group-that-held-campus-rally-on-october-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> $100,000 settlement</a> when they filed suit over the cancellation.
His latest move suggests that it was a payoff to his allies, not a recognition of the need to preserve free speech.
Campus police told TPUSA that because of an &#8220;increase in threats related to Turning Point events,&#8221; police would staff the event, while TPUSA would be required to hire a security firm at its own expense to &#8220;conduct metal/weapons detection and bags checks upon entry.&#8221;
Lawyers from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) told the university that if increased security is required, &#8220;the law does not allow public institutions to shift this increased burden to the targeted group.&#8221;
“Doing so gives those most willing to engage in political violence the ability to silence or burden their opponents through the agency of the state. Raising costs on TPUSA in the wake of its leader&#8217;s assassination is a stark reminder of how literally deadly such a perverse incentive can be.&#8221;
In other words, UMD would be carrying water for terrorists.
&#8220;With the precedent UMD has set here, any student or community member could announce plans to disrupt a group&#8217;s campus event, and encourage others to do so, in the hope that UMD would respond by financially burdening the group,&#8221; FIRE wrote.
University of Maryland Associate General Counsel Christopher Lord replied with a denial that the fee was based on viewpoint. He said one of the factors the university uses to determine required security is &#8220;the history of similar events and/or of performer/speakers at other locations,&#8221; and invoked &#8220;the tragic assassination of Mr. Kirk.&#8221;
Lord also acknowledged that earlier this month, on October 7, the university bore the cost for hundreds of thousands of dollars for a &#8220;Boycott Israel fest,&#8221; as well as pro-Israel counter-protesters.
He said the university is more likely to cover costs for outdoor events due to a Fourth Circuit Court ruling deeming outdoor spaces &#8220;limited public forums.&#8221; That suggests that if the university has a commitment to free speech, it&#8217;s to the extent that a court forced it to, and that, ironically, it doesn&#8217;t apply in classrooms themselves. If a group like Turning Point wants to avoid fees, it can hold an event outdoors — like the sort at which Kirk was assassinated.
Making the situation all the more outlandish is that the Daily Wire personality at the center of this controversy, Cabot Phillips, is unaccustomed to being the center of controversy. Phillips is not an opinion commentator like Ben Shapiro or Michael Knowles; he is the genial and cheery personality at the center of news broadcasts like Morning Wire.
As Conor Clayton of the Maryland Turning Point chapter told us, Phillips is “not controversial.”
“It&#8217;s very strange that they would make this determination that there would be massive protests or threats,&#8221; Clayton said. Representatives for the University of Maryland and its parent organization didn&#8217;t respond when we asked if they could identify a single inflammatory statement by Phillips.
Given that Clayton told us that his chapter hosted another indoor event at a campus chapel, a vigil for Kirk, without being charged for security, that suggests that the Daily Wire’s involvement may be the critical wrinkle in this already sorry state of affairs.
Pines is currently under investigation for blatant plagiarism, which was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/university-of-maryland-president-copied-rocket-science-paper-from-aussie-student" target="_blank" rel="noopener">exposed</a> by The Daily Wire’s Luke Rosiak. It has been more than a year since Pines admitted <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/university-of-maryland-president-copied-rocket-science-paper-from-aussie-student" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;recurrent language&#8221;</a> in an academic paper after it was unearthed by what he<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/university-of-maryland-president-acknowledges-recurrent-language-submits-to-plagiarism-review" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> called</a> &#8220;a blogger,&#8221; and he has faced no accountability.
This month, The Daily Wire<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/maryland-college-president-heidi-anderson-plagiarized-dissertation?author=Luke+Rosiak&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=8&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Another+College+President+Plagiarized+Her+Dissertation.+That%E2%80%99s+Just+The+Tip+Of+The+Iceberg." target="_blank" rel="noopener"> exposed a second president</a> of a Maryland campus, University of Maryland Eastern Shore&#8217;s Heidi Anderson, for massive plagiarism. All of this suggests a significant moral rot under the leadership of Jay Perman, the chancellor of the state&#8217;s public university system.
The security fee in question is minimal, just $150. But as Clayton lays out, that’s not the point.
&#8220;It&#8217;s really not about the monetary amount, it&#8217;s about ensuring that the university commits itself to the First Amendment,” Clayton told us. “This is a prior restraint on our free speech, because if we don&#8217;t pay this fee we can&#8217;t have the event.&#8221;
&#8220;It&#8217;s really a slap in the face. Charlie Kirk, literally all he did is talk with people and share a conservative message, and they killed him for it. The university sees that and instead of trying to encourage conservative speech, they&#8217;re doing everything they can to restrict our speech.”

Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott said on Sunday that the state is actively going after professors at public universities who push leftist ideologies over important studies.
Abbott made the comment in response to a University of Texas at Austin professor getting dismissed from an administrative post over &#8220;ideological differences,&#8221; a move that was <a href="https://www.axios.com/local/austin/2025/10/15/university-of-texas-mark-artman">reported</a> by Axios last week. In a <a href="https://x.com/GregAbbott_TX/status/1979953044977598674">post</a> on X sharing the Axios story, Abbott wrote, &#8220;Texas is targeting professors who are more focused on pushing leftist ideologies rather than preparing students to lead our nation.&#8221;
&#8220;We must end indoctrination and return to education fundamentals at all levels of education,&#8221; he added.
After being dismissed, tenured psychology professor Art Markman said on LinkedIn he’s preparing for “a new chapter” in his career. He had been at the University of Texas for 27 years, eventually becoming senior vice provost for academic affairs. Markman is also a co-host of the science podcast, &#8220;<a href="https://www.npr.org/podcasts/381443482/two-guys-on-your-head">Two Guys on Your Head</a>.&#8221; He did not say what &#8220;ideological differences&#8221; led to his dismissal.
The Daily Wire reached out to the University of Texas at Austin, seeking comment.
Markman&#8217;s dismissal came as the University of Texas System, which consists of 14 academic and health institutions across the state, launched a review of gender identity and LGBTQ studies, the Austin American-Statesman <a href="https://www.statesman.com/news/education/article/ut-system-audits-gender-courses-gop-targets-21075365.php">reported</a>. The probe will look into courses at all 14 of the system&#8217;s institutions.

Pressure has ramped up on Texas universities to gut courses that include diversity, equity, inclusion, and radical gender theory as President Donald Trump takes action against schools that push leftist ideologies.
Texas A&amp;M, which is not part of the University of Texas System, has also faced controversy in recent weeks after Dr. Melissa McCoul, an English professor, was filmed in class pushing pro-LGBT talking points and telling a student who opposed her to leave a lecture. The videos showing McCoul spouting radical gender theory in a children&#8217;s literature class at the university were obtained by Republican Texas Rep. Brian Harrison and first <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-texas-am-student-booted-from-lecture-after-objecting-to-professor-pushing-radical-gender-theory">reported</a> by The Daily Wire.
Harrison then went on a crusade accusing Texas A&amp;M of leftist bias and pushed for the university&#8217;s president, Mark Welsh to step down or be fired. Welsh&#8217;s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/texas-am-president-to-resign-after-leftist-politics-infiltrated-university-childrens-lit-course">resignation</a> was announced less than two weeks later.
Harrison appears unconvinced that Texas is going far enough to address LGBT courses at public universities. The state lawmaker <a href="https://x.com/brianeharrison/status/1979965546637472043">responded</a> to Abbott&#8217;s post on Sunday, saying that the University of Texas System is still promoting &#8220;LGBTQ Studies.&#8221; The University of Texas <a href="https://liberalarts.utexas.edu/wgss/courses/">offered</a> numerous courses on LGBT topics this fall, including &#8220;Queer Eastern Europe,&#8221; &#8220;Queer Latinx Aesthetics,&#8221; and &#8220;Black Queer Art Worlds.&#8221;

California State University, Northridge, is facing a wrongful termination lawsuit from an employee who alleges he was fired “because of his political views against antisemitism and advocacy on behalf of Jewish students and faculty.”
Sam Lingrosso, the university&#8217;s former Director of Academic Employees Relations, says in a <a href="https://peterlawgroup.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/2025-08-11-First-Amended-Complaint_Conformed-4.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">complaint</a> that his December 2024 firing was the result of his efforts to assist Jewish faculty who raised safety concerns related to on-campus antisemitism in the wake of Hamas&#8217;s October 7 attack on Israel, especially near its one-year anniversary. According to a news release, Lingrosso is seeking damages under the California Fair Employment and Housing Act.
“CSUN had a duty to protect their Jewish faculty members and ensure a safe learning environment, free of threats and harassment,” Eyal Farahan, an attorney with the Peter Law Group, which filed the complaint, said in a statement. “Sam’s work should have been celebrated but, instead, he was unlawfully terminated in violation of multiple California statutes that protect employees from harassment.”
The 2023 attacks led to a surge in anti-Israel activism and antisemitic incidents on college campuses throughout the United States. The demonstrations, which ranged from encampments to protests, raised major red flags for Jewish students and staff on those campuses.
In the complaint, it outlines how Lingrosso asked campus police to “facilitate a safety plan” for a professor who raised concerns about “unsettling remarks written on posters he had displayed outside his office depicting American hostages in Israel” and voiced concerns that Jewish students had of “harassment or violence” in the wake of “pro-Palestinian demonstrations on campus.”
Attorneys for the plaintiff wrote in the complaint that Interim Associate Vice President for Faculty Affairs Christina L. Von Mayrhauser had given “unwarranted criticism” and undermined Lingrosso, saying it was “a direct consequence of Plaintiff’s proactive efforts to protect the safety and well-being of Jewish faculty and students.” In one incident, the aforementioned professor sent an email to &#8220;Jewish faculty and allies&#8221; thanking Lingrosso for his efforts to improve address safety concerns, but Von Mayrhauser allegedly took issue with a line in the professor&#8217;s message.
&#8220;The contrast between Plaintiff’s decisive actions and others’ inaction — particularly in Professor Katz’s statement that Plaintiff &#8216;has been focused on DOING things rather than talking about them&#8217; — was interpreted by Von Mayrhauser as a direct affront to her leadership. Her reaction was marked by visible displeasure and indignation, as she viewed the email as an attack on her authority and an attempt to undermine her credibility within the institution,&#8221; the complaint states.
Farahan added that campus leadership &#8220;failed to take meaningful action to confront hate and ultimately fostered a climate of indifference and fear&#8221; amid serious antisemitism woes at universities nationwide.
The university disagreed with the claims made in the lawsuit in a statement to The Daily Wire on Monday afternoon.
“California State University, Northridge is aware of a legal complaint filed by a former at-will employee. These spurious allegations are completely unfounded and the University will vigorously defend against them. The University remains committed to maintaining an inclusive and supportive environment for our entire campus community,&#8221; the university said in a statement.

Wyoming Republicans are crying foul after a high school student said her school treats her Turning Point USA Club America chapter unfairly and blocks them from engaging in activities that similar clubs are allowed to do. 
Natrona County High School senior Kylie Wall told The Daily Wire that the Club America chapter she started has received a chilly reception from school administrators who have exercised a heavy hand over the group&#8217;s activities. This includes taking limited action after school staff ripped down posters for the club at the school, she said. 
State Senator Rachel Rodriguez Williams, the chair of the Wyoming Freedom Caucus, told The Daily Wire that school officials appeared to be chilling the free speech of conservative students. 
&#8220;At best, NCHS administrators are chilling the protected speech of students, which is unacceptable,” she told The Daily Wire. “At worst, they’re systematically silencing the speech and activities of students on and off campus, which is indefensible.”
The Wyoming Freedom Caucus filed a public records request on Sunday, demanding all communications to or from Natrona County High School Principal Aaron Wilson containing the terms “Club America” or “Turning Point USA.” Natrona County High School is located in Casper, Wyoming’s second most populous city. 
Wall told The Daily Wire on Thursday that she had serious concerns about equal treatment, free speech, and student rights under district policy and the federal Equal Access Act, which requires schools receiving federal funds to have equal opportunities. 
&#8220;As students, we simply want to be treated fairly, to have our voices respected, and to participate in the same opportunities afforded to other clubs,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We look forward to working toward a resolution that upholds district policy and students’ constitutional rights.&#8221;
Wall, who started a Club America chapter shortly after the assassination of Charlie Kirk, says that school officials have blocked them from participating in public meetings off campus and failed to take sufficient action after she saw school staff tearing down advertisements for the club. 
&#8220;Approved Club America flyers have been removed by staff, and some teachers have made disparaging remarks about our club and its members,&#8221; Wall told The Daily Wire. &#8220;Despite these reports, the administration has taken little action to address them, contributing to a hostile environment for students who hold different viewpoints.&#8221;
Natrona County School District noted that it recognized two Club America chapters, one at Natrona County High School and another at Kelly Walsh High School.
&#8220;These student-led clubs are open to high school students who are interested in learning about government, civic responsibility, and active citizenship. Like all student-led clubs, school-based meetings are student-driven and are not open to the public,&#8221; the county told The Daily Wire. &#8220;We continue to encourage students from all high schools to work together and collaborate in many different capacities.&#8221;
Rodriguez Williams said that the Wyoming Freedom Caucus “reminds all Wyoming school districts that students don’t shed their First Amendment rights at the schoolhouse doors. We are disgusted that school staff would tear down posters advertising Club America, but are filled with hope for the future at the bravery and poise of these patriotic students.&#8221;
In addition to the posters being pulled down, school officials have reportedly blocked Wall’s chapter from meeting with another local Turning Point USA club, prohibited them from attending an off-campus banquet hosted by the Wyoming Family Alliance, and told Wall that she could not do an interview on the club without the principal’s presence. 
&#8220;Our club was prohibited from attending a community event hosted by the Wyoming Family Alliance, even though other student organizations — such as athletic teams and Key Club, and others — routinely attend similar off-campus events,&#8221; Wall said. &#8220;This restriction seems inconsistent with district practice and limits our club’s opportunities to participate equally in civic activities.&#8221;
Wyoming Family Alliance Executive Director Nathan Winters confirmed that Wilson told them to &#8220;exclusively&#8221; reach out to Club America through him and declined the invitation to the banquet. He added that they never received a response when they asked if there was a district policy blocking the students from engaging in community events.
“Wyoming Family Alliance will always stand with students who want to engage in civil public discourse and experience the true meaning of American citizenship,&#8221; Winters told The Daily Wire. &#8220;We are disappointed and deeply concerned when any school or administrator restricts those first steps toward civic participation. Students should be encouraged, not silenced, when they seek to learn, lead, and contribute to their communities.”
Wall added that she &#8220;was instructed not to speak to reporters about our chapter without direct administrative supervision, or even on my own time,&#8221; while students at other high schools were not restricted in the same way. 
Following the assassination of Kirk last month in Utah, Turning Point USA has reported a massive surge in requests to form new chapters on both high school and college campuses. The organization said last week that it has launched 1,500 new high school chapters nationwide, up from roughly 1,200 total before Kirk’s death.
