Just ahead of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/dr-seuss" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dr. Seuss</a>’ birthday, Dr. Seuss Enterprises and Random House Children’s Books announced Thursday that the classic 1957 <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/books" target="_blank" rel="noopener">children’s book</a> “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” will be getting a sequel.
The story will continue one year after the events of the original story, according to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/books-and-literature-animation-comics-entertainment-dr-seuss-5524eaf8396afaa8db26b7390c1b285e" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Associated Press</a>. The sequel is called “How the Grinch Lost Christmas!” and will be a totally original work made in the style of the late writer.
“One of the most asked questions we receive from Seuss fans of all ages is &#8216;What do you think happened to the Grinch after he stole Christmas?&#8217;” Alice Jonaitis, executive editor at Random House Children’s Books, said in a statement.
The sequel is written by Alastair Heim and illustrated by Aristides Ruiz. Heim has created other books inspired by the style of Dr. Seuss, including “If I Ran Your School” and “I Am the Cat in the Hat.” 
“All throughout writing the story, I couldn’t fully believe that I was actually getting to play in the amazing creative sandbox Dr. Seuss created all those decades ago,” Heim told AP in an email. 
“When I heard of the opportunity to be a part of this project, I jumped at the chance only to find that it was difficult and daunting to approach adding to or expanding such an esteemed and treasured part of the American Christmas canon,&#8221; Ruiz added.  
“How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” is one of Dr. Seuss’s most well-known and beloved children’s books. It sold close to 10 million copies in North America, the publication noted, and has been translated into multiple languages. The story was also turned into an animated movie narrated by Boris Karloff in 1966. It was later adapted into a full-length, live action film starring Jim Carrey in 2000 and was again adapted in 2018.
The sequel will feature the Grinch competing to win Who-ville’s Christmas Crown with the most spectacular Christmas tree ever seen, per Dr. Seuss Enterprises. Grinch becomes cold-hearted and mean again during the contest until Cindy-Lou Who reminds him about the true meaning of Christmas.

Dr. Seuss, whose real name is Theodor Geisel, died in 1991. Though he’s one of the most recognized and respected children’s book authors in history, some of his older titles have come under fire recently for alleged racist and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/six-dr-seuss-books-to-stop-being-printed-day-after-biden-left-out-author-from-read-across-america-day" target="_blank" rel="noopener">problematic themes</a>. Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced in 2021 that they would stop printing six titles from the Seuss catalog, including “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street” and “If I Ran the Zoo.”

Following nationwide celebrations for Dr. Seuss’s birthday March 2, his estate announced the release of new books featuring previously unpublished sketches by the author— suggesting that the beloved children’s author is no longer canceled. 
It’s true that six “problematic” titles are no longer available for purchase because of alleged “racist and insensitive imagery” and themes. Now, however, the Dr. Seuss library is being redeemed by getting a small, potentially woke-friendly makeover. Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced the news Wednesday. The company was founded after the 1991 death of Dr. Seuss, whose real name is Theodor Seuss Geisel. 
Apparently, a series of previously unseen sketches will be turned into Seuss-style literature that’s put together by an “inclusive” group of writers and artists hailing from “diverse racial backgrounds.” Several of the untitled projects are scheduled to be published by next year.
Reps from Dr. Seuss Enterprises promise that the storylines accompanying Geisel’s sketches will, “represent a diverse cross-section of racial backgrounds to represent as many families as possible.” The books will target young readers ages 4 &#8211; 8, the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/03/02/dr-seusss-unpublished-sketches-to-be-edited-by-racially-diverse-group/">reported</a>.
&#8220;We look forward to putting the spotlight on a new generation of talent who we know will bring their unique voices and style to the page, while also drawing inspiration from the creativity and imagination of Dr. Seuss,” president and CEO of Dr. Seuss Enterprises Susan Brandt said in a <a href="https://apnews.com/article/new-dr-seuss-inspired-books-diverse-creators-05fbaa1cf59c17c208f9cbfc87db507a">statement</a>.
“The original Dr. Seuss sketch that serves as the inspiration for each of the new Seuss Studios books will be included in the book, along with a note from the creators explaining how they were inspired, and their process,” she continued.
Skeptics on social media are fearing the worst for this new line of Dr. Seuss-inspired literature. 
“Can&#8217;t they just make up their own woke stories without ruining the work of a beloved author? Was bad enough when they canceled his books,” one Twitter user <a href="https://twitter.com/twistninthewind/status/1499097419690266628">wondered</a>.
“One fish, two fish, gender-fluid vaxxed and boosted fish,” another person joked.
This announcement comes after President Joe Biden included the controversial children’s author in “Read Across America Day” for 2022 after <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/uncanceled-biden-includes-dr-seuss-in-read-across-america-day-proclamation-after-excluding-him-last-year">leaving Dr. Seuss out last year</a> amid the banning of those six titles. 
“For many young Americans, the path to literacy begins with treasured and timeless traditions: being read to at bedtime, gathering in classrooms for story time, and attending events at local libraries with family and friends,” Biden said in his proclamation. “Children’s classics such as Dr. Seuss’ ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ and ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go!’ have inspired a passion for reading and endless creativity that spans generations.”
Dr. Seuss Enterprises confirmed in 2021 that they will no longer publish “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street,” “If I Ran the Zoo,” “McElligot’s Pool,” “On Beyond Zebra!,” “Scrambled Eggs Super!,” and “The Cat’s Quizzer.”

Since 1998, March 2 has been celebrated as &#8220;Read Across America Day,&#8221; a date <a href="https://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/us/read-across-america-day">suggested</a> by the National Education Association in order to honor the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Since the day&#8217;s establishment, presidents as disparate as Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Donald Trump mentioned the author in their comments about the day.
But after Virginia&#8217;s largest school district, Loudoun County Public Schools, removed Dr. Seuss from its Read Across America Day celebration, President Biden left out any mention of the author from his proclamation last year.
Biden’s <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2021/03/01/a-proclamation-on-read-across-america-day-2021/">proclamation</a> included statements such as these:

President Joe Biden&#8217;s proclamation for &#8220;Read Across America Day&#8221; appeared to un-cancel famed children&#8217;s author Dr. Seuss, after he was completely excluded from the proclamation in 2021.

Biden issued the annual proclamation Tuesday ahead of the actual celebration of Read Across America Day, which was founded in 1998 by the National Education Association in honor of Dr. Seuss&#8217;s birthday. Seuss, whose real name is Theodor Seuss Geisel, was born on March 2, 1904, and passed away in 1991. Presidential proclamations declaring the celebration have been issued by former Presidents Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Donald Trump, with most mentioning Seuss by name. But Biden drew fierce criticism after his <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2021/03/01/a-proclamation-on-read-across-america-day-2021/">2021</a> proclamation made no mention of Seuss at all. The Daily Wire&#8217;s Cabot Phillips wrote <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/according-to-joe-bidens-standards-joe-biden-should-be-canceled">at the time</a>:

Though the Biden administration didn’t give a specific reason for keeping Dr. Seuss from the list, if you believe they happened to omit the most popular children’s author in American history, on the holiday set on his birthday by accident, and not for fear of offending the outrage mob, you’re living in a world as outlandish and fantastical as one of Seuss’s creations.

Biden&#8217;s omission of Seuss in his 2021 proclamation followed news that the Loudoun County Public Schools district in Virginia announced that it would <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/oh-the-places-the-woke-will-go-dr-seuss-canceled-for-racial-undertones">no longer recognize</a> Dr. Seuss in its celebration of Read Across America Day. An announcement from the district instructed schools to avoid “connecting Read Across America Day with Dr. Seuss,” saying that his books contained “racial undertones” that are not suitable for “culturally responsive” learning.
The District&#8217;s decision came after a left-wing teachers&#8217; organization called Learning for Justice published an article claiming that Dr. Seuss&#8217;s works did not contain enough characters of color, and those characters were often &#8220;‘presented in subservient, exotified, or dehumanized roles,’&#8221; to the white characters.
In reaction, Dr. Seuss Enterprises, which manages the author&#8217;s estate, announced that it would <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/six-dr-seuss-books-to-stop-being-printed-day-after-biden-left-out-author-from-read-across-america-day">discontinue the publication</a> of six books that contained particularly overt racial imagery. Online auction site <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/now-its-ebay-website-reportedly-bans-sale-of-some-dr-seuss-books">eBay</a> also announced it would ban sales of the discontinued books, and the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/chicago-public-library-removes-several-dr-seuss-books-from-collection-while-they-assess">Chicago Public Library</a> pulled the books from its shelves in response as well.

Uncanceled? Biden Includes Dr. Seuss In ‘Read Across America Day’ Proclamation After Excluding Him Last Year

A nonprofit linked to the “cancellation” of Dr. Seuss&#8217;s books and Nickelodeon’s race-based special has teamed up with Google’s charity arm to create an “anti-racist” book list for K-12 teachers. 
La Jolla, California-based The Conscious Kid supports taking actions that “disrupt racism” in young children by promoting “age-appropriate” “anti-racist” literature. The organization’s <a href="https://www.theconsciouskid.org/black-authors">website</a> offers a slew of books for children and young adults including titles such as “Woke Baby,” “M is for Melanin,” and “Hey Black Child.” 
The website also promotes the book “Kamala and Maya’s Big Idea,” a children’s book written by Meena Harris, the niece of Vice President Kamala Harris.
In June, Google’s charity, Google.org, announced that it would partner with the nonprofit by curating a list of reading materials and lesson plans that support “inclusive, anti-racist K-12 classrooms.” 
The tech giant said in a press release that it supports The Conscious Kid’s embrace of critical race theory — the theory that America is intrinsically and immutably racist. 
“We’ve also teamed up with experts at The Conscious Kid to curate a list of teacher-facing reading materials as well as evaluation criteria to consider when bringing new resources into the classroom,” the Google <a href="https://blog.google/outreach-initiatives/education/creating-more-inclusive-classrooms/">press release</a> reads. “The Conscious Kid’s selections are informed by intersectional race-center approaches including Critical Race Theory and Critical Race Media Literacy, which examine representation in the content, as well as the power dynamics behind the ownership, production, and creation of it.”
The book <a href="https://www.gstatic.com/gumdrop/consciouskid_inclusivereads.pdf">guide</a> says it was “created with support from Google for Education” and encourages educators to “re-evaluate” teaching classic books and opt for “social justice books” instead. 
“Re-evaluate ‘classic’ books or stories which can convey and reinforce outdated values and messaging of sexism, racism, anti-Semitism, ableism, or colonialism,” the guide reads. “Choose social justice books to help push back against embedded biases and reinforcing values of sexism, racism, or ableism.” 
According to the guide, books must “counter whiteness as the norm or definition of success” and avoid showcasing a character of color that succeeds when “conforming to white values or norms.” So-called “<a href="https://www.showingupforracialjustice.org/white-supremacy-culture-characteristics.html">white values</a>” include individualism, objectivity, and a sense of urgency. 
The Conscious Kid sends “anti-racist” books to teachers for free for use in classrooms. “If you are an educator, administrator, school counselor, or librarian at a Title I elementary school, you are eligible to apply to receive a set of these books for free,” its website <a href="https://www.theconsciouskid.org/apply">says</a>, noting that “Within 8 hours of launching this application, over 3,000 educators in all 50 states applied to receive anti-racist children’s books for their schools. We will be sending books to all of them.” 
On the nonprofit’s website, it thanks jewelry designer Kendra Scott for donating $20,000 to launch the fund to donate “anti-racist” books to schools and libraries. The nonprofit also boasts that it sent over <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/RentReliefForFamilies?utm_campaign=p_cp_url&amp;utm_medium=os&amp;utm_source=customer">$1.3 million</a> in COVID-19 “rent relief” to families across the country, $700,000 of which went to black families and $50,000 of which went to the “Black Trans community.” Large donors included actress Kristen Bell and journalist turned progressive activist Mona Chalabi. 
In the four years preceding July 2018, the most recent period covered in tax filings, it told the Internal Revenue Service it had <a href="https://apps.irs.gov/app/eos/detailsPage?ein=814204447&amp;name=Conscious%20Kid&amp;city=La%20Jolla&amp;state=CA&amp;countryAbbr=US&amp;dba=&amp;type=CHARITIES,%20DETERMINATIONLETTERS,%20EPOSTCARD&amp;orgTags=CHARITIES&amp;orgTags=DETERMINATIONLETTERS&amp;orgTags=EPOSTCARD">less</a> than $50,000 in revenue. 
Google.org’s partnership with The Conscious Kid is part of its broader campaign to “amplify diversity in public education.” It <a href="https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/626084/google-book-list-fosters-racial-equity-in-schools">donated</a> $5 million to DonorsChoose, a platform that teachers can use to crowdsource funds for classroom projects, and $1 million to #ISeeMe, an initiative that highlights projects submitted by black and “Latinx” teachers.
Other companies and publications such as Nickelodeon, School Library Journal, and Learning for Justice — the education arm of the left-wing Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) — have worked with The Conscious Kid in some capacity. 
The Conscious Kid was co-founded by Katie Ishizuka and Ramón Stephens. Ishizuka is the Editor-in-Chief of the School Library Journal, the largest reviewer of child and young adult literature and content. Stephens is a Ph.D. candidate in education studies at the University of California-San Diego. 
The duo is best known for their <a href="https://sophia.stkate.edu/rdyl/vol1/iss2/4/">study</a> that claimed the beloved author Dr. Seuss’s children’s literature is rife with “orientalism, anti-blackness, and white supremacy.” The study surveyed 50 Dr. Seuss books and concluded that there is not enough diversity in the children’s books, many of which were written in the 1950s and feature cartoon characters with green skin. 
On March 2, which is Dr. Seuss’s birthday and “National Read Across America Day,” the publisher of Dr. Seuss&#8217;s literature <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dr-seuss-books-soar-to-amazons-top-10-list-after-cancellation">announced</a> that it would stop selling six titles, citing racist and insensitive imagery. 
In celebration of that day, in place of Dr. Seuss, The Conscious Kid <a href="https://www.theconsciouskid.org/storytime">hosted</a> Douglas Emhoff, the husband of Kamala Harris, to read “I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark.” 
The Conscious Kid expanded its audience even more when, in June, it partnered with Nickelodeon for a children’s special entitled “Kids, Race, and Unity.” According to a Nickelodeon <a href="https://www.nickpress.com/press-releases/2020/06/23/nickelodeons-nick-news-returns-with-kids-race-and-unity-a-nick-news-special-hosted-by-global-superstar-alicia-keys">press release</a>, the special featured the leaders of the Black Lives Matter movement and Ibram X. Kendi. The special also highlighted “teen activists who are fighting racial injustice.” 
“A discussion guide as well as anti-racism resources, made in partnership with The Conscious Kid and Dr. George James, will be available on <a href="http://nickhelps.com/">nickhelps.com</a> and Nickelodeon’s social channels following the premiere of the special,” Nickelodeon said.
The Conscious Kid also operates a subscription-based <a href="https://www.patreon.com/theconsciouskid">Patreon channel</a> for parents to help them better navigate the “intersections of race, equity, parenting, and education.” The monthly subscription fee goes towards compensating “educators or color for our time, labor, and experiential knowledge,” the organization’s social media presence, and more.  
The Conscious Kid did not respond to request for comment.

Update: Seuss Enterprises told The Daily Wire that the legal threat is fake and that Seuss Enterprises never demanded the retraction.
“The purported legal notice is a fake. It did not come from Dr. Seuss Enterprises or anyone associated with the organization,” Seuss Enterprises told The Daily Wire.
Original Post: Seuss Enterprises, which holds the rights to the famous children’s author’s titles, threatened the satire site The Babylon Bee with a defamation lawsuit over the weekend.
The Bee’s CEO Seth Dillon posted a copy of the email from Seuss Enterprise’s legal department on Twitter on Sunday along with a rebuke of the literary estate. Dillon said the Bee would not pull the article in question, which satirized Seuss Enterprises for adopting progressive views of literature.
“The woke folks over at Seuss Enterprises … were apparently bored and looking for something dumb to do this weekend, so they threatened to sue us for defamation whether our content is ‘satire or not,’” Dillon tweeted along with a screenshot of the legal threat. The threat said “Your article, satire or not, is a copyright infringement and breaking multiple defamation laws. Remove this or we will proceed accordingly.”
The Bee article in question is titled “In New Dr. Seuss Book, Cat In The Hat Gives Kids Puberty Blockers While Their Mother Isn’t Home,” mocking the estate for its recent progressive turn. The article was published on March 5, days after the estate <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/six-dr-seuss-books-to-stop-being-printed-day-after-biden-left-out-author-from-read-across-america-day">announced</a> that it had banned six of Dr. Seuss’s books over claims that the works were offensive.
“Unfortunately for them, this piece was a work of satire, which is fair use,” Dillon continued, shooting down Seuss Enterprises’ demands for a retraction. “We will not be taking it down the way they took down several of their own, perfectly harmless titles to score worthless virtue points with insatiable leftists.”

“Today, on Dr. Seuss’s Birthday, Dr. Seuss Enterprises celebrates reading and also our mission of supporting all children and families with messages of hope, inspiration, inclusion, and friendship. We are committed to action,” the estate said in a March 2 statement.
“These books portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong,” the statement continued. “Ceasing sales of these books is only part of our commitment and our broader plan to ensure Dr. Seuss Enterprises’s catalog represents and supports all communities and families.”
Over a week prior to the announcement, the left-wing education group Learning for Justice called on schools to stop reading Dr. Seuss to children over the children’s author’s “racial undertones.” As <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/oh-the-places-the-woke-will-go-dr-seuss-canceled-for-racial-undertones">The Daily Wire</a> reported:
<blockquote>In a magazine article titled, “<a href="https://www.learningforjustice.org/magazine/its-time-to-talk-about-dr-seuss">It’s Time to Talk About Dr. Seuss</a>,” Learning for Justice cites a <a href="https://sophia.stkate.edu/rdyl/vol1/iss2/4/">study</a> from St. Catherine University that claims Dr. Seuss’s children’s literature is rife with “orientalism, anti-blackness, and white supremacy.”  
The researchers surveyed 50 Dr. Seuss books and concluded that there is not enough diversity in the children’s books, many of which were written in the 1950s. 
“Of the 2,240 (identified) human characters, there are 45 of color representing two percent of the total number of human characters,” the study reads. Of the 45 characters of color, 43 “exhibited behaviors and appearances that align with harmful and stereotypical Orientalist tropes.” </blockquote>

If you want to buy Dr. Seuss’s The Cat’s Quizzer on Amazon, it will set you back $628.75 on the secondhand market. If you try to buy it on eBay, you may not find it at all. According to a spokesman for the auction site, “EBay is currently sweeping our marketplace to remove” six Dr. Seuss books recently deemed offensive by politically correct censors.
Dr. Seuss’s cancelation comes on the heels of Amazon’s decision to ban When Harry Became Sally, Ryan T. Anderson’s whimsically titled, scholarly assessment of transgenderism. Amazon has refused to give an explanation for banning Anderson’s book in particular, but has defended past decisions to censor by pointing to its publishing guidelines, according to which the company reserves the right to ban “hate speech…or other material we deem inappropriate or offensive.”
No amount of money can buy you a copy of When Harry Became Sally on Amazon. Conservatives have accused the websites of hypocrisy and absurdity, but the decision to permit Hitler and censor Seuss makes perfect sense: the Left faces a far greater threat from The Cat’s Quizzer than it does from Mein Kampf. Dr. Seuss influences impressionable young minds. If his cartoons contradict politically correct fashions, then Dr. Seuss has got to go. Hitler, on the other hands, exerts no influence on the culture beyond a handful of skinheads playacting alternate history. In fact, the Left benefits from the continued publication of Mein Kampf. Only by keeping the Third Reich at the forefront of the American mind do leftists’ calumnies carry any weight when they smear their opponents as Nazis.
Children’s stories help shape what the Marxist philosopher Antonio Gramsci called the “common sense,” the set of beliefs that people come to hold without critical reflection. Gramsci reprimanded his fellow radicals in the early twentieth century for focusing too much on their abstract theories and losing touch with the common sense. He urged radicals to achieve “cultural hegemony” by amassing social power through a “war of position,” a concept that student radicals of the 1960s would rename “the long march through the institutions.”

This week, Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced it would stop the sale and distribution of six classic volumes from the great children&#8217;s author. Those volumes, said the company, violate its commitment to &#8220;messages of hope, inspiration, inclusion, and friendship.&#8221; The books include portrayals of people &#8220;in ways that are hurtful and wrong.&#8221;
Society has long held that activity that damages others ought to be curbed. John Stuart Mill posited the so-called harm principle — the belief that activity that harms someone ought to be condemned or even barred — in the mid-19th century. But Mill refused to conflate harm and offense: Being offended wasn&#8217;t cause for sanction of another.
Broadly speaking, society agreed with this formulation. But in the past few years, this formulation has been completely turned on its head. Now offense is not only considered a harm; it is considered the chief harm in our society. Physical injury, after all, is merely physical. But mental or emotional injury — that threatens our very sense of identity. Because we find our identity in our own sense of self-creation, any societal denial of that sense threatens our identity. As Carl Trueman writes in &#8220;The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self&#8221;: &#8220;The era of psychological man therefore requires changes in the culture and its institutions, practice, and beliefs that affect everyone. They all need to adapt to reflect a therapeutic mentality that focuses on the psychological well-being of the individual.&#8221;
When individual self-creation becomes the chief goal of a society, institutions must be torn down — institutions, after all, foster a set of rules that may not be conducive to individual self-creation. Informational flow must be dammed — after all, information may allow others to take a different, objectively based opinion about you than you take subjectively about yourself. Books must be burned — after all, books carry with them implicit messages that may threaten your sense of yourself.

Iconoclasm becomes the order of the day.
Our societal turn from actual, measurable harm toward subjective, psychological harm places us on the road to complete devastation of our culture and our rights. Now anyone who offends — or even has the potential to offend — can be, and indeed ought to be, fired. Now any book — no matter how old or how inoffensive — can be, and indeed ought to be, banned. Now any kernel of information — no matter how true — can be discarded.
This formulation puts all power in the hands of those who are most easily offended — or at least those who claim to be. The offense itself is the weapon. Legal torts require damages; societal torts merely require a claim of damages, without evidence. No one can explain just how a drawing in &#8220;If I Ran the Zoo&#8221; has contributed to actual racism; there are no recorded incidents of a single white supremacist citing &#8220;And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street&#8221; as a formative source in his racist worldview. But any academic with a computer and a degree in postmodern nonsense can take those books off the shelves simply by claiming that offense is possible.
In the end, the only literature allowed will be the literature that adheres to the values of our postmodern world — a world in which we are not expected to conform to societal rules but society is expected to conform to our own acts of self-definition. That means your child reading &#8220;I Am Jazz&#8221; but never — never, Gaia forbid! — the Bible. It means goodbye to cultural icons, large and small — goodbye to all vestiges of the past, replete with their &#8220;bigoted&#8221; value systems.
It means that the purges have only just begun.

Dr. Seuss Enterprises may have pulled just six books from publication, citing &#8220;hurtful and wrong&#8221; depictions, but the study that prompted Read Across America and, potentially, Dr. Seuss Enterprises to re-examine the famous children&#8217;s author&#8217;s books suggests that most, if not all, of Dr. Seuss books have elements of racism and sexism and that the author himself deserves to be fully &#8220;canceled.&#8221;
The study, which follows the controversial &#8220;Critical Race Theory,&#8221; was authored by a pair of researchers behind &#8220;<a href="https://www.theconsciouskid.org/">The Conscious Kid</a>,&#8221; which calls itself &#8220;an education, research, and policy organization dedicated to equity and promoting healthy racial identity development in youth.&#8221;
&#8220;We support organizations, families, and educators in taking action to disrupt racism in young children,&#8221; says the group.
Dr. Seuss, whose real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel, is a primary target of &#8220;The Conscious Kid,&#8221; and the group believes that some of the author&#8217;s most beloved characters, including the Cat in the Hat and Horton the elephant from &#8220;Horton Hears a Who,&#8221; are truly racist metaphors that promote ideas of white supremacy and white paternalism.
Although neither of those books is yet banned, the 2019 study, titled &#8220;<a href="https://sophia.stkate.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1050&amp;context=rdyl">The Cat is Out of the Bag: Orientalism, Anti-Blackness, and White Supremacy in Dr. Seuss&#8217;s Children&#8217;s Books</a>,&#8221; is important context for the current battle, not just over whether Seuss&#8217;s works should be published, but whether they should be allowed to be sold or held in libraries.
The report begins with a deep dive into Dr. Seuss&#8217;s alleged history of prejudice and the author&#8217;s early dalliances with racism in his works, arguably important context for Dr. Seuss as well as relevant to the environment in which Seuss came of age and gained notoriety as a cartoonist during World War II.
The study then explores not just Seuss&#8217;s early work, but also his children&#8217;s books, through the lens of the controversial &#8220;Critical Race Theory,&#8221; which suggests that literature be examined with an eye to its alleged inherent racism and connection to issues of racial justice. The specific study examined &#8220;fifty of fifty-nine&#8221; Dr. Seuss works, analyzing issues such as how many times white characters appeared as opposed to characters of color, which characters are put into positions of hierarchy, whether characters of color are dehumanized or made to seem &#8220;exotic,&#8221; whether the book embraces racial stereotypes or caricatures, and whether Seuss&#8217;s works specifically exhibited racism, sexism, and white supremacy.
Perhaps it is not surprising that the authors, intent on finding problematic issues, discovered problems with the vast majority of Dr. Seuss books and nearly every Dr. Seuss character. Most of the characters Dr. Seuss uses are not human, but of those that are, just 2% are characters of color, the study found. And all of those are deemed problematic.
&#8220;Of the forty-five characters of color, forty-three are identified as having characteristics aligning with the definition of Orientalism. Within the Orientalist definition, fourteen people are identified by stereotypical East Asian characteristics and twenty-nine characters are wearing turbans,&#8221; the study&#8217;s authors say. &#8220;Only two of the forty-five characters are identified in the text as &#8216;African&#8217; and both align with the theme of anti-Blackness. White supremacy is seen through the centering of Whiteness and White characters, who comprise 98% (2,195 characters) of all characters. Notably, every character of color is male. Males of color are only presented in subservient, exotified, or dehumanized roles.&#8221;
The six titles ultimately pulled from publication —  “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street,&#8221; “If I Ran the Zoo,&#8221; McElligot’s Pool,” “On Beyond Zebra!” “Scrambled Eggs Super!” and “The Cat’s Quizzer&#8221; — are among those the study identifies as the worst of the worst, for reasons already delineated in a number of reports.
But the study&#8217;s authors don&#8217;t stop there. Dr. Seuss&#8217;s non-human characters are also deemed problematic, and chief among them are the Cat in the Hat and Horton the elephant.
&#8220;Horton Hears a Who! is one of Dr. Seuss&#8217; books widely cited as promoting tolerance. Several Seuss scholars infer that the Whos symbolize the Japanese and that the book is an apology for his anti-Japanese WWII propaganda,&#8221; the study&#8217;s authors say. &#8220;Regardless of the intention of the book, the impact is that it reinforces themes of White supremacy, Orientalism, and White saviorism. It positions the Whos in a deficit-based framework as the dominant, paternalistic Horton enacts the White Savior Industrial Complex.&#8221;
&#8220;Not only does a White savior narrative play out within &#8216;Horton Hears a Who!,&#8217; Seuss himself is positioned as a White savior for writing it,&#8221; they claim. &#8220;Although he supported and fueled the mass incarceration and killing of the Japanese and Japanese Americans, he is lauded for his &#8216;tolerance&#8217; for writing an allegory about &#8216;saving&#8217; them. In the book, the Whos are &#8216;helpless&#8217; and need to be &#8216;saved&#8217; and protected by the bigger, more powerful (White savior), Horton.&#8221;
The authors cite a single, separate scholar to buttress their claim, but the scholar attributes the white savior narrative to Seuss seemingly without any significant evidence.
The Cat in the Hat is next on the list.
The cat, the authors claim, was “inspired by blackface performance, racist images in popular culture, and actual African Americans,&#8221; citing other Critical Race Theory scholars who suggest that the Cat in the Hat&#8217;s appearance mimics that of racist minstrel performers.
While the racism in the first Cat in the Hat book appears limited just to the character&#8217;s appearance according to the authors, &#8220;The Cat in the Hat Comes Back,&#8221; the authors claim, is a complete allegory meant to teach children about white supremacy.
<blockquote>In Seuss’ narrative, the Cat uses the White family’s white bathtub and leaves a thick ring of his ink in it. When the Cat gets out of the bath, he wipes his ink on the White mother’s white dress, the white walls, the White dad’s shoes, the hallway rug, and the parents’ white bed. To clean up the ink all over the house, the Cat takes twenty-six “Little Cats” out of his hat to help. These Cats all have guns: “My cats have good guns./ They will KILL all those spots!,” and as they “kill” the spots with their guns, they leave even more ink in their path until all the snow outside of the house is covered in ink (Seuss, The Cat in the Hat Comes 44). Instead of the word “clean,” the word “kill” is used repeatedly: “‘Come on! Kill those spots!/ Kill the mess!’ yelled the cats” (Seuss, The Cat in the Hat Comes 51). The children yell, “All this does is make MORE spots!/ …Your cats are no good./ Put them back in the hat” (Seuss, The Cat in the Hat Comes 46). The story concludes when the last cat, “Little Cat Z,” is able to use a “Voom” to blow all the cats back in the hat and return everything to its “right,” “white” state: “Now your snow is all white!/ Now your work is done!/ Now your house is all right” (Seuss, The Cat in the Hat Comes 61)&#8230;The message here is that Whiteness is “right” and Blackness is “bad,” dirty, chaotic, violent, and “no good.”</blockquote>
The authors fail to mention that the &#8220;ink&#8221; is, in fact, frosting from a cake. And it is not black; it&#8217;s pink.
The authors move on to attack &#8220;The Sneetches&#8221; and perennial kindergarten favorite, &#8220;Oh! The Places You&#8217;ll Go&#8221; as coded works meant to convey the idea that white people are superior to minorities.
If that were not enough, Seuss is not just racist, he&#8217;s also sexist:
<blockquote>Intersections of racism and sexism occur across Seuss’ entire collection of literature. White women and girls retain minimal speaking roles, are rarely present, and are presented in subservient roles. The more startling finding is that women and girls of color are completely absent across his children’s book collection. Seuss’ White male protagonist leads dominate the visual space, narratives, and speaking roles. This shows the value in whose experiences matter and whose do not. This marginalization of White women and absence of women of color are rooted in hegemonic notions of White supremacy and patriarchy. </blockquote>
Many critics of the pushback against Dr. Seuss Enterprises&#8217; decision to stop publishing the six &#8220;controversial&#8221; books claim that only clearly outdated titles are being pulled, and not truly absent from the marketplace.
“What’s important here is that they aren’t asking anyone to stop reading them, taking them out of their personal collections, or library collections or schools,” a spokesperson for the American Library Association told National Public Radio last week. “They just made a decision that they wanted to be more responsible to the communities they serve. There is such a wealth of children’s literature today that celebrates the diverse experiences of children and their families and that don’t confront children with racist images that could be hurtful or traumatizing for them.”
But the study, which appears to have triggered Dr. Seuss Enterprises into a full analysis of the author&#8217;s catalog, does not see the crusade to &#8220;cancel&#8221; the children&#8217;s author as limited. In fact, it suggests that nearly all of Seuss&#8217;s works are problematic and that educational programs, such as Read Across America, should drop Dr. Seuss altogether. This past year, Read Across America did indeed drop Dr. Seuss as a central part of the program, and even the White House failed to mention Seuss in its Read Across America proclamation.
In the final paragraphs of the study the authors credit themselves for being instrumental in convincing the National Education Association to shift away from Dr. Seuss as the lead author celebrated during Read Across America (though the celebration takes place on Dr. Seuss&#8217;s birthday).
&#8220;In 2017,&#8221; they note, &#8220;we submitted this stakeholder feedback, and our study findings, to the National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America (RAA) Advisory Committee. RAA is the nation’s largest celebration of reading, with over 45 million annual participants.&#8221;
&#8220;We advocated that they reconsider their twenty-year focus on Seuss and use their platform to promote anti-racist diverse books by authors of color,&#8221; the authors note.
The presentation was <a href="https://www.pragmaticmom.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/FINALNEAReportDr.SeusssRacismandRAA.pdf">catalogued and remains available</a>. That abbreviated version of the paper also takes aim at &#8220;One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish&#8221; in a selection that reads almost like a parody (though the NEA clearly took it seriously).
<blockquote>The authors claim that  &#8220;multiple animal characters in One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish [symbolize] Black people and Black/white relations, including the reference of the Yink drinking ink, characters depicted as not being able to read, riding in the &#8216;back of the bike,&#8217; pushing white children on a bike up a hill (&#8216;We like our Mike and this is why: Mike does all the work when the hills get high&#8217;), and boxing &#8216;the great white hope.'&#8221; This is the page featuring the character &#8220;Mike,&#8221; which has been suggested as being a reference to Black people riding in the back of the bus and being subservient to white children.</blockquote>
In 2021, it appears the authors finally succeeded in reaching their goal.
Although the authors do not specifically say they submitted their findings to Dr. Seuss Enterprises, the claims, complaints, and justifications for pulling the targeted works are the same — and the crusade is far from over. Their goal, the authors say, is to engage  &#8220;stakeholders, including youth, families, and teachers from racially marginalized communities, to identify and document existing forms of resistance to Seuss&#8217; racist works.&#8221;

The Chicago Public Library system is taking six controversial Dr. Seuss book out of circulation at least temporarily while they assess what to do with them.
Officials are &#8220;deeply committed&#8221; to promoting reading material that &#8220;[provides] accurate and current information,&#8221; according to Chicago Public Library spokesperson Patrick Molloy, who spoke to the <a href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/2021/3/6/22316983/dr-seuss-chicago-public-library-racist-imagery-circulation" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Chicago Sun-Times</a>.
“It is important to recognize that what society understands to be relevant and/or common knowledge changes over time, and so too does the Library and the needs of the communities it serves,” Molloy said. “Library staff encourage patrons of all ages to engage critically with our materials, but materials that become dated or that foster inaccurate, culturally harmful stereotypes are removed to make space for more current, comprehensive materials.”
Molloy added that the library&#8217;s collection is reviewed often “to ensure that the materials we circulate are responsive to the communities we serve.&#8221;
“Staff will continue to evaluate all Library resources and consider bias, prejudice, and racism when making decisions about our programming, services and recommendations, in addition to our collections,” Molloy added.
Molloy also explained that all six Seuss titles are currently checked out and that the library will honor all the holds on them presently.
The New York Public Library, by contrast, decided to keep all of Seuss&#8217; books in circulation.
“As with all public libraries the New York Public Library does not censor books,” library spokeswoman Angela Montefinise <a href="https://nypost.com/2021/03/03/ny-public-library-keeping-dr-seuss-books-in-circulation/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a> in part. “In this case, the six titles in question are being pulled out of print by Dr. Seuss Enterprises, so the very few copies we have of these titles will continue to circulate until the are no longer in acceptable condition,” Montefinise said.
Seuss, who died in 1991, made headlines earlier this week when his company announced on his birthday that they would no longer be publishing six titles that they claimed had racist and insensitive imagery.

After six Dr. Seuss books were unceremoniously canceled over revelations of their supposed racism, Big Tech giants rallied to further enable the most recent wave of digital book burnings. 
On Thursday, internet auction site eBay <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/auction-site-ebay-confirms-it-is-monitoring-for-illicit-dr-seuss-book-sales">confirmed</a> that they were “scouring” their open auctions for the canceled Dr. Seuss titles, “reviewing seller profiles, and removing the listings, which the site claims violate its ‘offensive materials policy.’”
According to eBay’s offensive materials <a href="https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/prohibited-restricted-items/offensive-material-policy?id=4324">policy</a>, “Listings that promote or glorify hatred, violence, or discrimination aren&#8217;t allowed.”
“In order to promote trust and respect among our diverse community of members, eBay does not allow items that promote or glorify racial, sexual or religious intolerance, or promote organizations that hold such views,” the policy reads:

<li>Slurs or epithets of any kind</li>
<li>Slavery items, including reproductions, such as tags, shackles, documents, bills of sale, etc.</li>

However, other titles and content which appear to violate this policy remain available on eBay, even while Dr. Seuss books continue to be wiped from online auctions.
Mein Kampf
Mein Kampf, the 1925 autobiographical manifesto by Nazi Party leader Adolf Hitler, is still available for purchase on eBay. The book was later edited by Rudolf Hess, who became Deputy Führer to Hitler in 1933.
The book explains Hitler’s ideological processes, how he became anti-Semitic, and describes his political plans for what would become Nazi Germany. 
In addition to writing that the fictitious and fabricated anti-semitic text, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, was authentic, Hitler also wrote that “the nationalization of our masses will succeed only when, aside from all the positive struggle for the soul of our people, their international poisoners are exterminated,” and that, “If at the beginning of the war and during the war twelve or fifteen thousand of these Hebrew corrupters of the nation had been subjected to poison gas, such as had to be endured in the field by hundreds of thousands of our very best German workers of all classes and professions, then the sacrifice of millions at the front would not have been in vain.”
Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion
Ironically, the fabricated text referenced as authentic by Hitler is also still available on eBay. The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion is a hoax which describes an apparent Jewish plan for world domination. It was first published in Russia in 1903, and has remained popular among anti-Semites, despite having been shown to have been plagiarized from other sources soon afterwards. Henry Ford even funded the printing and distribution of 500,000 copies in the United States in the 1920s.
The text claims to contain the minutes of a meeting held by world Jewish leaders in the late 19th century, known as the “Elders of Zion,” and includes 24 “protocols” containing various themes, such as international conspiracy, arrogance and corruption, or the relationship between gentiles and Jews.
According to the <a href="https://www.adl.org/resources/backgrounders/a-hoax-of-hate-the-protocols-of-the-learned-elders-of-zion">Anti-Defamation League</a>, “The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion is a classic in paranoid, racist literature. Taken by the gullible as the confidential minutes of a Jewish conclave convened in the last years of the nineteenth century, it has been heralded by anti-Semites as proof that Jews are plotting to take over the world. Since its contrivance around the turn of the century by the Russian Okhrana, or Czarist secret police, ‘The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion’ has taken root in bigoted, frightened minds around the world.”
The Communist Manifesto
Available for comparatively bargain prices, The Communist Manifesto is also up for purchase on eBay. Written in 1848 under the original title, Manifesto of the Communist Party, German philosophers Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels produced what is now seen as one of the world’s most impactful political documents, outlining an analysis of class warfare and the so-called conflicts of capitalism. It was commissioned by the Communist League and published just as the Revolutions of 1848 began.
The document is viewed as one of the primary and foundational documents underlying the spread of communism, with the ideology resulting in the deaths of millions of people under various communist regimes. <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/100-years-of-communismand-100-million-dead-1510011810">Estimates</a> put the total death toll at 100 million people over 100 years of communism.
Birth of a Nation
The Birth of a Nation is a 1915 silent drama adopted from Thomas Dixon Jr.’s novel and play, The Clansman. The first 12-reel film ever made, and the longest movie at that time, is a partly fictitious account of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln by John Wilkes Booth, and the relationship of two families — the Northern Stonemans and the Southern Camerons — during the Civil War and Reconstruction eras.
The movie is riddled with bigotry, with white actors in blackface portraying some African American characters as unintelligent or sexually dangerous, while presenting the Ku Klux Klan as the heroes required to preserve and protect white supremacist “American” principles. The Birth of a Nation was screened by President Woodrow Wilson in the White House, and many view the movie as responsible for the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan, with their return occurring just a few months after the film’s release.
David Duke
Various works by David Duke, the American neo-Nazi and former grand wizard of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, are still available on eBay. Among his statements and written work are the promotion of anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and Holocaust denial, with the Anti-Defamation League <a href="https://www.adl.org/sites/default/files/documents/assets/pdf/combating-hate/David-Duke.pdf">describing</a> Duke as “perhaps America’s most well-known racist and anti-Semite.”  
Louis Farrakhan Speeches
Various speeches from Louis Farrakhan, the leader of the Nation of Islam, are also available on eBay, despite his demonstrated history of open and unapologetic anti-Semitism.
<a href="https://www.adl.org/education/resources/reports/nation-of-islam-farrakhan-in-his-own-words">Examples</a> include “I don’t care what they put on me. The government is my enemy, the powerful Jews are my enemy,” “Those who call themselves ‘Jews,” who are not really Jews, but are in fact Satan: You should learn to call them by their real name, ‘Satan;’ you are coming face-to-face with Satan, the Arch Deceiver, the enemy of God and the enemy of the Righteous,” or “When they talk about Farrakhan, call me a hater, you know how they do – call me an anti-Semite. Stop it, I’m anti-termite!”

EBay Canceled Dr. Seuss, But You Can Still Buy Works From Hitler, Marx And More

Comedian Gabriel Iglesias defended the cartoon mouse Speedy Gonzalez, whom Iglesias is voicing in the upcoming Space Jam sequel, against claims that the mouse perpetuates “corrosive stereotypes.”
Iglesias took to Twitter on Saturday, shooting down any attempt at potentially canceling the cartoon mouse over claims that he or his cartoon friends contribute to harmful stereotypes of Mexicans.
“I am the voice of Speedy Gonzales in the new Space Jam. Does this mean they are gonna try to cancel Fluffy too?” Iglesias, who is nicknamed Fluffy, posted with an image of Speedy Gonzalez. “U can’t catch me cancel culture. I’m the fastest mouse in all of Mexico.”

Speedy Gonzalez, along with several other cartoon characters, came under scrutiny on Wednesday after Charles Blow, a columnist for The New York Times, wrote a defense of those businesses and groups that have canceled six books by Theodor Seuss Geisel, known as Dr. Seuss, over allegations of racism. Blow included in his column a handful of cartoons and other shows that he claimed pushed toxic culture. As Blow <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/03/opinion/suess-books-race-bias.html">writes</a>:
<blockquote>Some of the first cartoons I can remember included Pepé Le Pew, who normalized rape culture; Speedy Gonzales, whose friends helped popularize the corrosive stereotype of the drunk and lethargic Mexicans; and Mammy Two Shoes, a heavyset Black maid who spoke in a heavy accent.
Reruns were a fixture in the pre-cable days, so I watched children’s shows like Tarzan, about a half-naked white man in the middle of an African jungle who conquers and tames it and outwits the Black people there, who are all portrayed as primitive, if not savage. I watched the old “Our Gang” (“Little Rascals”) shorts in which the Buckwheat character summoned all the stereotypes of the pickaninny.
And of course, I watched westerns that regularly depicted Native Americans as aggressive, bloodthirsty savages against whom valiant white men were forced to fight.</blockquote>
Blow’s column sparked backlash in defense of the cartoons that millions of Americans grew up watching. Many spoke out in defense of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nyt-columnist-cartoon-skunk-pepe-le-pew-perpetuates-rape-culture">Pepé Le Pew</a>, a cartoon skunk famous for his numerous failed attempts to woo a black and white cat.
“[Right wing] blogs are mad [because] I said Pepe Le Pew added to rape culture,” Blow tweeted on Saturday. “Let’s see. 1. He grabs/kisses a girl/stranger, repeatedly, [without] consent and against her will. 2. She struggles mightily to get away from him, but he won’t release her 3. He locks a door to prevent her from escaping.”
“This helped teach boys that ‘no’ didn’t really mean no, that it was a part of ‘the game’, the starting line of a power struggle,” argued Blow. “It taught overcoming a woman’s strenuous, even physical objections, was normal, adorable, funny. They didn’t even give the woman the ability to SPEAK.”
Last week, Amazon, eBay, and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/six-dr-seuss-books-to-stop-being-printed-day-after-biden-left-out-author-from-read-across-america-day">Dr. Seuss Enterprises</a> all stripped six of Seuss’s works from their platforms, canceling the books over claims that the images and descriptions in the books are racist or offensive.
