The Biden administration&#8217;s former &#8220;disinformation czar,&#8221; ousted after an apparent attempt to create an Orwellian ministry of truth within the Department of Defense, has launched a new nonprofit that declares criticism of &#8220;disinformation researchers&#8221; such as herself as a chief threat to the United States of America.
&#8220;The campaign against counter-disinformation work is the greatest threat to freedom of expression and academic integrity since the McCarthy era,&#8221; Nina Jankowicz said in a press release, pledging that her group would not &#8220;allow it to continue.&#8221;
&#8220;Once researchers are free to conduct their essential work, the American people will gain a better understanding of the nature and severity of the disinformation threats we face,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Disinformation knows no political party. Its ultimate victim is our democracy.&#8221;
The group, the American Sunlight Project, was announced as a bipartisan advocacy organization founded by Jankowicz that was &#8220;launched to expose and oppose efforts to weaponize disinformation in the United States.&#8221;
&#8220;The organization will investigate the networks and money driving disinformation and educate the public about the threats disinformation poses to their daily lives,&#8221; it says. &#8220;The first step in the group’s program will involve countering the organized campaign currently challenging the work of disinformation researchers.&#8221;
The group&#8217;s advisory board consists of Katie Harbath, a former Facebook executive, Emily Horne, a former National Security Council official, Ineke Mushovic of the gay advocacy group Movement Advancement Project, and Ben Wittes of the left-wing Brookings Institution, who was once described as the &#8220;<a href="https://www.politico.com/interactives/2017/politico50/benjamin-wittes/">bard of the deep state</a>.&#8221;
Carlos Álvarez-Aranyos, the group&#8217;s co-founder, claims that &#8220;organized campaigns are preventing us from researching and understanding the threat of disinformation and organization an appropriate national response,&#8221; promising to &#8220;break the deadlocks holding us back.&#8221;
In 2022, Jankowicz was appointed by the Department of Homeland Security to lead an ill-fated body called the Disinformation Governance Board. An uproar over civil liberties ensued, including from 20 state attorneys general, with the Biden administration ultimately <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-republicans-demand-answers-from-nina-jankowicz-on-new-disinformation-governance-board" target="_blank" rel="noopener">scrapping</a> the idea. Jankowicz says the criticism of the board was, itself, misinformation.
Jankowicz had posted bizarre videos of herself singing about &#8220;disinformation,&#8221; referring to herself as the &#8220;Mary Poppins of disinformation.&#8221;

&#8220;Misinformation&#8221; groups often purport to rate news outlets in the name of transparency, assign failing ratings to center-right news outlets, and then refuse to share their data with journalists who want to check their methodology.
In the past, they have been subsidized by the government, and served to enforce government-sanctioned lines — such as that the coronavirus did not leak out of a Chinese lab — in the media.
Anti-&#8220;misinformation&#8221; efforts often hold only the barest pretext to being anything other than partisan enforcers, saying they aim to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/state-department-paid-germans-to-bring-censorship-and-propaganda-to-u-s-schools" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rescue</a> people from early warning signs that they believe could head down a path to extremes — which often amounts to a belief in center-right ideas — while actively advocating for left-wing falsities such as the New York Times&#8217; debunked 1619 Project.
Even as they make a living criticizing others, &#8220;misinformation researchers&#8221; have played the victim as soon as people do not react to their work the way they hoped.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/20-gop-attorneys-general-threaten-lawsuit-over-un-american-disinformation-board" target="_blank" rel="noopener">called</a> the scrapped Disinformation Governance Board an &#8220;un-American, anti-democratic, and a dangerous escalation of the Biden Administration’s embrace of government-endorsed censorship,&#8221; and said Americans should not trust Jankowicz to act &#8220;as the Biden Administration&#8217;s arbiter of truth.&#8221;
The new &#8220;sunlight&#8221; group <a href="https://www.americansunlight.org/letter-to-congress">wrote</a> to the Committee faulting it for releasing excerpts from &#8220;misinformation experts&#8221; own testimony, saying it has made them &#8220;targets for harassment.&#8221;
The group lamented that &#8220;dozens of AI-generated images of former President Trump posing with Black voters have circulated online&#8221; and said the images &#8220;are real, present-day threats to American democracy.&#8221;

Chip Slaven, the former interim executive director and CEO of the National School Boards Association (NSBA), and Viola Garcia, the former President of the NSBA, also received subpoenas.
They &#8220;co-signed the September 2021 letter to President Biden requesting federal law enforcement assistance to target parents voicing concerns at local school board meetings,&#8221; a press release from Jordan&#8217;s office said. &#8220;That letter led to an October 4, 2021, memorandum that directed the FBI to establish a &#8216;threat tag&#8217; to investigate Americans.&#8221;
Jankowicz is the former executive director of the Department of Homeland Security&#8217;s (DHS) Disinformation Governance Board, which was <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2022/08/24/following-hsac-recommendation-dhs-terminates-disinformation-governance-board" target="_blank" rel="noopener">disbanded last year</a> in the face of intense criticism by Republicans.

In a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RV66xYwukOk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">video posted to YouTube</a> last week, Jankowicz claimed the board was subject to &#8220;baseless claims&#8221; that it was an Orwellian &#8220;Ministry of Truth&#8221; and she was President Joe Biden&#8217;s &#8220;chief censor.&#8221;
Jankowicz said her job really was meant &#8220;to make sure different entities within DHS were coordinated, to bring the latest research to bear in the Department, and to help the Department set up policies to ensure its existing counter-disinformation work was grounded in American values: privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties.&#8221;
Though the focus of the video was to <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/news/ex-biden-administration-disinformation-czar-crowdfunding-lawsuit-to-hold-fox-accountable/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">promote a crowdfunding effort</a> to sue Fox News over coverage of her, Jankowicz also claimed Jordan lied about her and the work that she has done, <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/news/ex-biden-administration-disinformation-czar-crowdfunding-lawsuit-to-hold-fox-accountable/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to National Review</a>.
The Daily Wire reached out to Lawrence &amp; Bundy LLC, which Jordan indicated was her legal representation in his letter, for comment. The Daily Wire also reached out to NSBA for comment.

Project Veritas shared an image on social media Thursday claiming an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/fbi" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FBI</a> whistleblower leaked a document showing the agency classified “misinformation” as an “election crime” ahead of the 2022 <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/2022-midterms" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Midterm Elections</a> next month.
According to the document, titled &#8220;2022 Midterm Elections Social Media Analysis Cheat Sheet,&#8221; election crimes include eight sections that fall under federal jurisdiction, ranging from campaign finance to voter suppression. The details inform federal authorities what to look out for leading up to the November 8 election.
However, federal authorities have included misinformation, which means false or misleading information spread mistakenly or unintentionally, as something that could lead to a full or grand jury investigation.
The document also lists “disinformation” as an election crime, which points to &#8220;false or inaccurate information intended to mislead others.&#8221;
&#8220;Disinformation campaigns on social media are used to deliberately confuse, trick, or upset the public,&#8221; the document reads.
The FBI’s National Press Office declined a request for comment from The Daily Wire.
According to the federal agency&#8217;s <a href="https://www.fbi.gov/how-we-can-help-you/safety-resources/scams-and-safety/common-scams-and-crimes/election-crimes-and-security">website</a>, &#8220;bad actors use various methods to spread disinformation about voting, such as social media platforms, texting, or peer-to-peer messaging applications on smartphones. They may provide misleading information about the time, manner, or place of voting. This can include inaccurate election dates or false claims about voting qualifications or methods, such as false information suggesting that one may vote by text, which is not allowed in any jurisdiction.&#8221;

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/department-of-homeland-security" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Department of Homeland Security</a> (DHS) is shutting down the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/disinformation-governance-board" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Disinformation Governance Board</a> more than three months after announcing a pause on the Board&#8217;s work.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas made the announcement in a statement on Wednesday.
“The Department welcomes the recommendations of the Homeland Security Advisory Council, which has concluded that countering disinformation that threatens the homeland, and providing the public with accurate information in response, is critical to fulfilling the Department&#8217;s missions,” the DHS said in the <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2022/08/24/following-hsac-recommendation-dhs-terminates-disinformation-governance-board" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>.
“We thank the Subcommittee for its work, which required extensive fact gathering and analysis over a short period of time,” it added.
The Board&#8217;s work was paused in May after Republican Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares sent a letter co-signed by 20 GOP attorneys general to Mayorkas threatening legal action against the “un-American” Disinformation Governance Board.
“As the chief legal officers of our respective States, we the undersigned Attorneys General are tasked not just with enforcing the laws, but with protecting the constitutional rights of all our citizens,” the GOP leaders <a href="https://www.oag.state.va.us/files/MIYARES2022/DGBLetter_Final.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>.
“Today we write you to insist that you immediately cease taking action that appears designed exclusively for the purpose of suppressing the exercise of constitutional rights,” they added.
Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) also <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/this-board-is-unconstitutional-and-un-american-sen-cotton-leads-gop-lawmakers-in-effort-to-defund-bidens-disinformation-board" target="_blank" rel="noopener">introduced</a> a bill in May to ban federal funding from being used to launch President Joe Biden’s Disinformation Governance Board within the DHS.
Cotton was joined in the <a href="https://www.cotton.senate.gov/download/disinformation-board-bill-text" target="_blank" rel="noopener">legislation</a> with support from a team of 18 co-sponsors.
“The Biden administration wants a government agency dedicated to cracking down on what its subjects can say, an idea popular with Orwellian governments everywhere. This board is unconstitutional and un-American — my bill puts a stop to it,” Cotton said in a <a href="https://www.cotton.senate.gov/news/press-releases/cotton-colleagues-introduce-legislation-to-defund-homeland-securitys-disinformation-board" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>.
Nina Jankowicz, an author and “expert” on disinformation, resigned as the board’s executive director following the group&#8217;s pause.
“With the Board’s work paused and its future uncertain, and I have decided to leave DHS to return to my work in the public sphere,” Jankowicz said, Wall Street Journal reporter Dustin Volz <a href="https://twitter.com/dnvolz/status/1526960062194925575?s=20&amp;t=0vPQ89GjQ5Xl8l-VsQt2Uw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. “It is deeply disappointing that mischaracterizations of the Board became a distraction from the Department’s vital work, and indeed, along with recent events globally and nationally, embodies why it is necessary. I maintain my commitment to building awareness of disinformation’s threats and trust the Department will do the same.”

George Orwell’s magnum opus, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/shop/products/1984-by-george-orwell">Nineteen Eighty-Four</a>, features the dangers of a totalitarian government that goes beyond mere exertion of force into redefining the nature of truth itself. In the regime of Big Brother, mere compliance with governmental edicts is not enough — one must submit his heart, soul, mind, and strength to every opinion, policy, and action that the state pursues.
Rather than treating the dystopian novel as a warning, the Biden administration has leveraged its premise as an instruction manual for key practices — to cover its tracks, to grab more power, and to force irrational policies upon the American people.
Disinformation Governance Board
Winston Smith, the protagonist of Nineteen Eighty-Four, finds himself employed at the Ministry of Truth — a government agency tasked with charting official narratives transmitted to the people via propaganda. Smith is charged with rewriting past newspapers to correspond with the party’s worldview before incinerating any documents that may conflict with the new version.
Earlier this year, the Biden administration <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/secretary-mayorkas-defends-disinformation-governance-board-from-ministry-of-truth-accusations">launched</a> the Disinformation Governance Board — an entity at the Department of Homeland Security tasked with combating misinformation and dictating truth to the masses. Especially after Nina Jankowicz, an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-republicans-demand-answers-from-nina-jankowicz-on-new-disinformation-governance-board">overt partisan</a>, was tapped to lead the board, conservatives blasted the Biden administration for launching its very own Ministry of Truth.
“I confess, I at first thought this announcement was satire. Surely, no American administration would ever use the power of government to sit in judgment on the First Amendment speech of its own citizens,” Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trying-to-intentionally-tank-for-the-number-one-pick-in-the-draft-conservatives-rip-bidens-disinformation-governance-board">said</a> in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. “Sadly, I was mistaken. Rather than protecting our border or the American homeland, you have chosen to make policing Americans’ speech your priority. This new board is most certainly unconstitutional and should be dissolved immediately.”
Although the Disinformation Governance Board was eventually forced to stand down — a development the White House <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-white-house-press-sec-claims-disinformation-mischaracterizations-tanked-disinformation-board">blamed on disinformation</a> — social media companies have also taken the mantle of becoming the arbiters of truth. One day after the Disinformation Governance Board was disbanded, Twitter announced a new round of policies geared toward issuing <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/theyre-going-to-get-their-ministry-of-truth-one-way-or-the-other-twitter-announces-crisis-misinformation-policy">warning labels</a> on “false coverage” of the war in Ukraine.
Beyond the Department of Homeland Security, the Biden administration has repeatedly signaled to allies in Silicon Valley that it expects help to push official narratives. Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/psaki-if-you-post-misinformation-online-you-should-be-banned-from-all-social-media-platforms">said</a> last year that social media users “shouldn’t be banned from one platform and not others” if they post “misinformation online.”
In even more Orwellian parallels, Twitter has censored <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/twitter-suspends-conservative-pundit-allie-beth-stuckey-for-stating-that-transgender-weightlifter-is-a-man">conservative commentators</a> and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nypost-remains-locked-out-of-twitter-a-week-after-publishing-bombshell-hunter-biden-report">entire news outlets</a> for “thoughtcrimes” such as calling transgender athletes by their true sex or publishing reports about Hunter Biden’s laptop weeks before the general election.
Birthing People
Among Big Brother’s most prioritized projects in Nineteen Eighty-Four was the creation and promulgation of “newspeak” — an altered version of the English language meant to recategorize thought such that dissent from the government is impossible.
As Daily Wire host Matt Walsh <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/videos/what-is-a-woman">recently discovered</a>, officials at the highest level of government are incapable of defining the term “woman” — despite their purportedly robust commitment to advancing women’s rights. Indeed, many progressives — including members of the Biden administration — have imported the assumptions of radical gender ideology into the word, which used to simply mean “adult human female.”
Last year, President Biden’s $6 trillion budget proposal allocated funds to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-budget-proposal-refers-to-mothers-as-birthing-people">address</a> the “high rate of maternal mortality and race-based disparities in outcomes among birthing people.” The term, which moved from the most radical corners of academia to the halls of the White House in a matter of months, is used to clarify — or, more accurately, obfuscate — that women who still have their uteruses despite hormones and surgeries can give birth.
“When we talk about birthing people, we’re being inclusive. It’s that simple,” pro-abortion group NARAL explained last year. “We use gender-neutral language when talking about pregnancy, because it’s not just cis-gender women that can get pregnant and give birth.”
As with the government in Nineteen Eighty-Four, the term “birthing people” is not meant to forward a rational argument for the case that men can get pregnant. Rather, it is meant to reframe thought and block dissent with radical gender ideology.
What Is A Recession?
In June, progressives failed to define the term “woman.” In July, progressives are trying to redefine the term “recession.”
All signs point to the United States economy soon meeting the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/white-house-does-preemptive-damage-control-as-economy-heads-toward-recession">rule-of-thumb definition</a> of a recession, since economic growth appeared to have been negative in the first and second quarters of this year as <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/walmart-sales-plummet-as-consumers-tighten-their-budgets">consumer spending</a> and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/business-leaders-report-first-output-contraction-since-2020-as-consumers-get-pinched-by-inflation">business activity</a> begin to decline. Rather than answering for the poor economy — which had been recovering until soaring inflation, persistent supply chain issues, and policies against oil and gas production — the Biden administration is devoting its energies to wordplay.
“While some maintain that two consecutive quarters of falling real GDP constitute a recession, that is neither the official definition nor the way economists evaluate the state of the business cycle,” the White House said in a <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/cea/written-materials/2022/07/21/how-do-economists-determine-whether-the-economy-is-in-a-recession/">blog post</a>. “Instead, both official determinations of recessions and economists’ assessment of economic activity are based on a holistic look at the data — including the labor market, consumer and business spending, industrial production, and incomes.”
In a particularly Orwellian imitation, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/yellen-were-not-in-a-recession-were-in-a-transition-in-which-growth-is-slowing">argued</a> that the United States is not in a “recession,” but rather in a “transition in which growth is slowing” — because in Biden’s America, even the economy transitions instead of being identified by its current state.
“We need to be growing at a steady and sustainable pace,” Yellen said, even though growth is currently negative. “So there is a slowdown and businesses can see that and that’s appropriate, given that people now have jobs and we have a strong labor market.”
Rationing
One of Winston Smith’s tasks at the Ministry of Truth was the fabrication of a newspaper to support Big Brother cutting chocolate rations from 30 grams per week to 20 grams per week. Yet within one day of the policy, the propaganda machine convinced the people that Big Brother had actually raised rations to 20 grams per week — leading to demonstrations of thanksgiving.
In the same manner, President Biden <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-takes-victory-lap-as-gas-prices-inch-downward-still-nearly-twice-as-high-since-his-first-day">took a victory lap</a> after gas prices started to decline from their heights of more than $5.00 per gallon. Despite arguing that his “actions are working” and “prices are coming down” — especially due to his <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/stunning-amount-of-oil-released-by-biden-found-its-way-to-china-other-countries">steady release</a> of strategic reserve oil, some of which <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-admin-sold-nearly-1-million-barrels-of-oil-to-chinese-state-owned-company-tied-to-hunter-biden">found its way</a> to a Chinese company with links to Hunter Biden — he failed to mention that gas was only $2.38 per gallon on the day he assumed office. 
Jared Bernstein, a member of Biden’s Council of Economic Advisers, <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/press-briefings/2022/07/19/press-briefing-by-press-secretary-karine-jean-pierre-and-cea-member-jared-bernstein/">added</a> that the administration’s policies have produced “a bit of breathing room in making ends meet” as the market observes “the fastest decline in retail gas prices in a decade.”
In the same manner, the White House has <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/speeches-remarks/2022/04/19/remarks-by-president-biden-on-investments-in-the-bipartisan-infrastructure-law/">repeatedly argued</a> that its first budget “cut the federal deficit” — the difference between government spending and government revenue — by $350 billion, while alleging that the second proposal will slash $1.3 trillion from the deficit. What is missing in this equation, which even <a href="https://www.factcheck.org/2022/04/bidens-deficit-spin/">left-wing fact-checkers</a> have called “misleading,” is the fact that deficits reached record highs in 2020 and 2021 because of stimulus packages meant to address the lockdown-induced recession. 
With his most recent budget, President Biden will be presiding over a $1.2 trillion deficit — far higher than any deficit seen before COVID or during the second term of President Barack Obama.

The task force, according to Thursday&#8217;s announcement, plans to address all online harassment and disinformation but will also focus specifically on the disproportionate online harassment faced by women and girls and people within the LGBTQ community.
The White House issued a <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2022/06/16/fact-sheet-presidential-memorandum-establishing-the-white-house-task-force-to-address-online-harassment-and-abuse/">press release</a> detailing the task force&#8217;s creation and a number of its objectives going forward.
&#8220;Today, President Biden will sign a <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2022/06/16/memorandum-on-the-establishment-of-the-white-house-task-force-to-address-online-harassment-and-abuse/">Presidential Memorandum</a> establishing the White House Task Force to Address Online Harassment and Abuse, responding to the need for government leadership to address online harms, which disproportionately affect women, girls, people of color, and LGBTQI+ individuals,&#8221; the press release stated, going on to note that the task force would include Attorney General Merrick Garland and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, among others.
The task force&#8217;s primary goal will be to &#8220;produce recommendations for the Federal government, state governments, technology platforms, schools, and other public and private entities to prevent and address technology-facilitated gender-based violence, including a focus on the nexus between online misogyny and radicalization to violence.&#8221;
The task force was also to be instrumental in &#8220;developing programs and policies to address the disproportionate impact of online harassment, abuse, and disinformation campaigns targeting women and LGBTQI+ individuals who are public and political figures, government and civic leaders, activists, and journalists in the United States and globally.&#8221;
But as one reporter noted during Thursday&#8217;s White House press briefing, several of the task force&#8217;s objectives appeared to be very similar to those of the recently-scrapped Disinformation Governance Board.

Republicans Senators <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/charles-grassley">Chuck Grassley</a> of Iowa and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/josh-hawley">Josh Hawley</a> of Missouri <a href="https://www.grassley.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/grassley_hawley_to_deptofhomelandsecuritydisinformationgovernanceboard.pdf">called on DHS</a> on Tuesday to &#8220;provide additional clarity regarding its policies and procedures for identifying (mis-, dis- or mal-information), as well as its efforts to ‘operationalize’ public-private partnerships and the steps it is taking to ensure it does not infringe on the constitutional rights of American citizens.&#8221;
The term &#8220;malinformation,&#8221; according to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, <a href="https://www.cisa.gov/mdm">refers to information</a> &#8220;based on fact, but used out of context to mislead, harm, or manipulate.&#8221;
DHS did not immediately respond to a request for comment or provide an example of malinformation to The Daily Wire.

After a whistleblower came forward with documents about the proposed Disinformation Governance Board, the Republican senators are asking DHS to explain how it planned to coordinate with social media companies in classifying content as being threatening to the public.
The Republicans warned that they have obtained internal DHS records showing that &#8220;DGB was designed to exert a powerful influence over the government’s efforts to crack down on disinformation in areas where there are ‘clear, objective facts’” — and that DHS was not just focused on foreign disinformation, but also COVID vaccines, masks, elections, and other domestic issues.
The Disinformation Governance Board first was publicly announced by DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in April shortly after Elon Musk announced he had brokered a deal to purchase Twitter, sparking liberal concerns that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/msnbc-host-now-complains-elections-could-be-swayed-through-twitter-censorship">elections could be swayed</a> through Twitter’s targeting of political parties or candidates.

Just one day after the White House confirmed that the Department of Homeland Security&#8217;s Disinformation Governance Board had been put on hold — and that board chief Nina Jankowicz had resigned — Twitter announced plans to implement a new &#8220;crisis misinformation policy.&#8221;
The plan, according to a tweet from @TwitterSafety, would be implemented to ensure that Twitter as a platform did not amplify or contribute to the spread of <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/our-concerns-are-not-new-psaki-wont-mention-musk-by-name-warns-twitter-could-still-promote-misinformation/">misinformation</a>.
&#8220;People turn to Twitter during crisis times to share news, find support, and stay connected. Today, we’re launching a crisis misinformation policy so Twitter doesn’t recommend or amplify viral, false content that can further harm already vulnerable groups,&#8221; the tweet read.

A <a href="https://blog.twitter.com/en_us/topics/company/2022/introducing-our-crisis-misinformation-policy">lengthier explanation</a> from Yoel Roth, Twitter&#8217;s head of Safety and Integrity, introduced the measure as &#8220;a global policy that will guide our efforts to elevate credible, authoritative information, and will help to ensure viral misinformation isn’t amplified or recommended by us during crises.&#8221;
The ultimate goal, Roth said, was to prevent Twitter from becoming party to misleading information that could then &#8220;undermine public trust and cause further harm.&#8221;
Roth included a list of things that users could expect to see warning labels attached to:

<li>False coverage or event reporting, or information that mischaracterizes conditions on the ground as a conflict evolves;</li>
<li>False allegations regarding use of force, incursions on territorial sovereignty, or around the use of weapons;</li>
<li>Demonstrably false or misleading allegations of war crimes or mass atrocities against specific populations;</li>
<li>False information regarding international community response, sanctions, defensive actions, or humanitarian operations.</li>
</ul>
&#8220;Strong commentary, efforts to debunk or fact check, and personal anecdotes or first person accounts do not fall within the <a href="https://help.twitter.com/rules-and-policies/crisis-misinformation">scope of the policy</a>,&#8221; Roth concluded.
But critics were immediately wary of the new policy.

Jean-Pierre&#8217;s comments echoed the framing of a report that broke Wednesday morning at The Washington Post — written by Taylor Lorenz — which claimed essentially that the board was derailed by a &#8220;coordinated&#8221; attack campaign promoted by Right-wing activists and had resulted in such &#8220;harassment&#8221; that Jankowicz had ultimately resigned.
Independent journalist Glenn Greenwald mocked the framing in a series of tweets, saying, &#8220;It&#8217;s a cause of momentary celebration that the Department of Homeland Security was forced by popular anger to &#8216;pause&#8217; its Disinformation Board and the absurd #Resistance cartoon they hired to run it, but read this to see how angry Post and @TaylorLorenz are that this happened.&#8221;

On Wednesday, The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/05/18/disinformation-board-dhs-nina-jankowicz/">reported</a> that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was pausing its Disinformation Governance Board that supposedly intended to monitor issues online relating to &#8220;national security.&#8221; Shortly after, President Joe Biden&#8217;s pick to lead the body, dubbed the &#8220;Ministry of Truth&#8221; by critics, announced her resignation.
Wall Street Journal reporter Dustin Volz <a href="https://twitter.com/dnvolz/status/1526956440228872193?s=20&amp;t=0vPQ89GjQ5Xl8l-VsQt2Uw">confirmed</a> Wednesday morning a story first reported by The Washington Post which claimed that DHS had put the kibosh on the newly created board on Monday &#8220;amid internal confusion and uncertainty about its future.&#8221; Volz added that Nina Jankowicz, an author and &#8220;expert&#8221; on disinformation, was resigning as the board&#8217;s executive director.
&#8220;With the Board&#8217;s work paused and its future uncertain, and I have decided to leave DHS to return to my work in the public sphere,&#8221; Jankowicz <a href="https://twitter.com/dnvolz/status/1526960062194925575?s=20&amp;t=0vPQ89GjQ5Xl8l-VsQt2Uw">said</a>, Volz reported. &#8220;It is deeply disappointing that mischaracterizations of the Board became a distraction from the Department&#8217;s vital work, and indeed, along with recent events globally and nationally, embodies why it is necessary. The Post reported that the disinformation board was not actually intended to censor speech, but rather protect it, as one source told the paper.
The Post&#8217;s source placed the blame for the board&#8217;s collapse at the hands of DHS for being unprepared to handle so-called &#8220;disinformation campaigns&#8221; from Right-wing media. The paper implied that conservatives were lying about the board, but conservatives have argued that the vagueness of the board&#8217;s mission meant it <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/is-federal-censorship-coming-biden-admin-creating-disinformation-governance-board-report">could potentially be used</a> in conjunction with Big Tech to censor certain stories deemed &#8220;national security threats&#8221; by some gatekeepers, thereby trampling on free speech.
The board was also announced shortly after former President Barack Obama delivered a speech calling for the federal government and private leaders to work hand in hand to combat disinformation related to &#8220;national security threats.&#8221;
In late April of this year, Obama stated that he believed that “<a href="https://twitter.com/BarackObama/status/1517333877580197888?s=20&amp;t=igo9GF8zFLCBSqSwznkybw">some democratic oversight</a>” was needed on the internet to supposedly protect democracies from disinformation.
“I believe we should use every tool at our disposal to secure our greatest gift – a government of, by, and for the people – for generations to come,” he <a href="https://twitter.com/BarackObama/status/1517333885255790592?s=20&amp;t=igo9GF8zFLCBSqSwznkybw">added</a>.
Critics speculated that the board would be used towards those ends.

Virginia Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares sent a letter signed by 20 GOP attorneys general on Thursday to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas threatening legal action against its &#8216;un-American&#8217; Disinformation Governance Board.
The <a href="https://www.oag.state.va.us/files/MIYARES2022/DGBLetter_Final.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">letter</a> claims that the new board violates the constitutional freedoms that attorneys general are called to defend.
&#8220;As the chief legal officers of our respective States, we the undersigned Attorneys General are tasked not just with enforcing the laws, but with protecting the constitutional rights of all our citizens,&#8221; the GOP leaders wrote.
&#8220;Today we write you to insist that you immediately cease taking action that appears designed exclusively for the purpose of suppressing the exercise of constitutional rights,&#8221; they added.
The letter also condemned the chilling impact the board would have on the free speech rights of Americans.
&#8220;The existence of the Disinformation Governance Board will inevitably have a chilling effect on free speech. Americans will hesitate before they voice their constitutionally protected opinions, knowing that the government’s censors may be watching, and some will decide it is safer to keep their opinions to themselves,&#8221; the letter stated.
The Republican attorneys general concluded with a warning of legal action if the Disinformation Governance Board moves forward.
&#8220;Unless you turn back now and disband this Orwellian Disinformation Governance Board immediately, the undersigned will have no choice but to consider judicial remedies to protect the rights of their citizens,&#8221; the letter concluded.
Miyares also released a statement along with the letter to reaffirm the need to protect free speech from the proposed DHS board.
“Freedom of speech is the bedrock of democracy. Instead of protecting and fostering it, this administration wants to create an organization that would have federal bureaucrats monitoring citizens’ speech. This would undoubtedly lead to Americans self-censoring their ideas and debates. I am concerned about the spread of false information, but creating a federal agency to police speech is not the way to address it. As the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Virginia, I cannot stand by as the rights of every Virginian are being threatened. The war on the First Amendment must stop,&#8221; he <a href="https://www.oag.state.va.us/media-center/news-releases/2372-may-5-2022-attorney-general-miyares-leads-multistate-letter-urging-biden-administration-to-stop-their-attack-on-the-first-amendment" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>.
In addition to Virginia, the other states represented in the letter include Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia.

On Monday, the DHS announced in a press release that there has already been confusion about the new board that is leading to a new assessment of its work.
&#8220;There has been confusion about the working group, its role, and its activities. Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee sent a letter to new Disinformation Governance Board leader Nina Jankowicz asking her to provide testimony regarding her new role within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The letter was signed by Ohio Republican Rep. Jim Jordan, a ranking member of the committee, along with 11 additional GOP House Judiciary Committee members.
“This Board is un-American, anti-democratic, and a dangerous escalation of the Biden Administration’s embrace of government-endorsed censorship,” the GOP leaders wrote to Jankowicz.
“In addition, judging from your past statements, Americans can not and should not trust you with your newfound authority to act as the Biden Administration’s arbiter of the truth,” the letter added.

The committee strongly spoke against the formation of the new board, claiming there should not be a government group limiting the free speech rights of Americans.
“The ability of Americans to engage in robust debate and conversation is the foundation of American politics, and there is no place for a de facto ministry of truth in our government. The very idea of a ministry of truth should be revolting to all Americans who hold our Bill of Rights in high regard,” the letter said.
The letter requested that Jankowicz provide all documents and communications relating to the creation of the board by May 19, including interactions between the board and social media companies.
In addition to concerns about the new disinformation governing board, Republican leaders have expressed problems with Jankowicz as the leader of the new group, especially regarding some of her own past social media videos and statements.
DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mayorkas-admits-dhs-chose-disinfo-czar-without-knowing-about-her-social-media-videos" target="_blank" rel="noopener">admitted</a> during a Wednesday hearing that he was “not aware” of the videos posted on social media by Jankowicz.
Mayorkas made the concerning statement in response to questions from a Senate Appropriations subcommittee about the board and the decision to appoint Jankowicz to lead it.

“When the department picked [Nina Jankowicz], was the department aware of her Tik Tok videos? They’re really quite precocious,” Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) asked, referencing now-viral videos of Jankowicz singing about disinformation to the tune of the “Mary Poppins” song, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”
“I was not aware of those videos,” Mayorkas replied.
Some GOP leaders are also seeking to defund the new Disinformation Governance Board before it begins.
Arkansas Republican Sen. Tom Cotton introduced a bill on Tuesday that would ban federal funding from being used to launch the new DHS board.
Cotton was joined in the <a href="https://www.cotton.senate.gov/download/disinformation-board-bill-text" target="_blank" rel="noopener">legislation</a> with support from a team of 18 co-sponsors among the Senate’s Republicans.
“The Biden administration wants a government agency dedicated to cracking down on what its subjects can say, an idea popular with Orwellian governments everywhere. This board is unconstitutional and un-American—my bill puts a stop to it,” Cotton said in a <a href="https://www.cotton.senate.gov/news/press-releases/cotton-colleagues-introduce-legislation-to-defund-homeland-securitys-disinformation-board" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>.
Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley also took a strong position against the new board in a Twitter post on Monday.
&#8220;Congress must act now to abolish this censorship board and prevent any future President who doesn’t believe in the Constitution from ever trying it again,&#8221; he wrote.
