A famed doctor with tens of millions of followers on social media was recently schooled on the issues plaguing public health by a supporter of the &#8220;Make America Healthy Again&#8221; agenda.
Mikhail Varshavski, known online as Dr. Mike, argued on a recent episode of Jubilee&#8217;s &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y90R8BPc8Ag">Surrounded</a>&#8221; that Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. should step down from his position, citing cuts to bureaucracy within the department.
A supporter of the MAHA movement named Brian needed under two minutes to decimate Dr. Mike&#8217;s argument.
&#8220;So considering all of that &#8230; where did that get us?&#8221; the MAHA supporter asked Dr. Mike, responding to specific HHS cuts cited by the online personality.
Notably, Secretary Kennedy has defended cuts to HHS, citing absurd bureaucracy and overlapping offices that he contends are wasteful and not helping improve public health.
&#8220;Look at the state of America, of Americans&#8217; health, and you tell me that the public is actually healthy,&#8221; Brian dared Dr. Mike. &#8220;What RFK is doing is he is saying, &#8216;enough is enough, something has to change.&#8217; And I will say this very politely &#8212; I think that you have to be f***ing insane to say &#8216;more&#8217; is somehow going to get us out of the current public health crisis that we have right now.&#8221;
&#8220;Americans are fat and they are sick and it is not getting better, and taking more and more money and continuing to flush it down the toilet is not going to solve the problem,&#8221; he continued.
&#8220;We know what will stop cancer dead in its tracks. We know what will stop all chronic disease dead in its tracks. Do you know what it is?&#8221; Brian asked.
&#8220;Lifestyle changes,&#8221; Dr. Mike responded.
&#8220;Lifestyle changes,&#8221; the MAHA supporter agreed. &#8220;The American Heart Association has known about this for years, that the most important predictor of longevity, risk of chronic disease, all-cause mortality is <a href="https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/pdf/10.1161/cir.0000000000000461">VO2 max</a>. So why aren&#8217;t doctors &#8212; why isn&#8217;t the government creating a public health system that says, &#8216;you know what, we&#8217;re gonna focus on VO2 max because even if we stopped every dollar we had [going] into cancer research right now, and we took that money and we said, let&#8217;s get people moving, let&#8217;s increase their VO2 max.'&#8221;
&#8220;The question is, when is enough enough to admit that the system you are a part of has drastically failed Americans?&#8221; Brian posed.
The supporter added that Secretary Kennedy, &#8220;by the very fact of how he looks in his 70s, does more to encourage people to live a healthy lifestyle and truly make America healthy again.&#8221;

Jamaica has declared an outbreak of the bacterial disease leptospirosis, suspected of causing six deaths, following the devastation from Hurricane Melissa in late October.
The Category 5 hurricane slammed into the Caribbean island on October 28, causing catastrophic flooding and landslides with some 30 inches (76 cm) of rain. The resulting stagnant, contaminated water has created a breeding ground for the disease, officials said.
Health Minister Christopher Tufton announced on Friday that nine cases were confirmed between October 30 and November 20, with 28 additional suspected cases.
Leptospirosis is spread through water or soil contaminated by the urine of infected animals, such as rodents. The infection can enter the human body through cuts in the skin or through the eyes, nose and mouth.
While initial symptoms such as fever, headache and muscle aches can be mistaken for the flu, the disease can progress to a severe and potentially fatal form. It can cause kidney failure, liver damage, meningitis and severe internal bleeding.
&#8220;The outbreak follows the passage of the storm which has created conditions that have increased the risk of exposure to contaminated water and soil,&#8221; Tufton said at a press conference.

He warned that anyone coming into contact with floodwaters could be at risk, including &#8220;farmers, persons engaged in cleanup activities, emergency responders and others navigating flood areas.&#8221;
Hurricane Melissa left an estimated $10 billion in damages, according to Jamaican officials, hobbling the nation&#8217;s key tourism and agriculture sectors and damaging nearly 200,000 buildings.

The first known fatality from a red meat allergy intolerance spread by ticks has been recorded.
The otherwise healthy 47-year-old New Jersey man died abruptly after consuming beef at a restaurant in the summer of 2024. He had been camping with his family two weeks prior, per <a href="https://newsroom.uvahealth.com/2025/11/13/1st-death-linked-to-meat-allergy-spread-by-ticks/">UVA Health</a>. 
The man&#8217;s son found him unconscious on the floor of a bathroom surrounded by vomit, and the man was declared dead at a hospital. The autopsy declared it was a &#8220;sudden unexplained death,&#8221; but his wife pushed for answers, and eventually it was discovered that his death could be traced back to a tick bite.
Former Chief of UVA Health’s Division of Asthma, Allergy and Clinical Immunology Thomas Platts-Mills determined via blood samples taken post-mortem that the man had been sensitized to alpha-gal, a sugar found in mammalian meat, the outlet noted. Alpha-gal syndrome is caused by a bite from the Lone Star tick, which causes people to have an anaphylaxis reaction. Symptoms include a rash, nausea, and vomiting after consuming meat.
The same man had become ill after a steak dinner two weeks prior and had told his son he felt like he was dying. 
“The important information for the public is: First, that severe abdominal pain occurring 3 to 5 hours after eating beef, pork or lamb should be investigated as a possible episode of anaphylaxis; and, second, that tick bites that itch for more than a week or larvae of ticks often called ‘chiggers’ can induce or increase sensitization to mammalian-derived meat,” Platts-Mills said. “On the other hand, most individuals who have mild to moderate episodes of hives can control symptoms with an appropriate diet.”
While most individuals who develop alpha-gal sensitivities don’t have such an extreme allergic reaction, it is a possibility that severe illness or death can occur. Platts-Mills also warned doctors to be on the lookout for these types of responses in their patients.
“It is important that both doctors and patients who live in an area of the country where Lone Star ticks are common should be aware of the risk of sensitization,” Platts-Mills said. “More specifically, if they have unexpected episodes of severe abdominal pain occurring several hours after eating mammalian meat, they should be investigated for possible sensitization to the oligosaccharide alpha-gal.”
Lone Star ticks are common throughout the South, Southeast, and much of the eastern and midwestern United States, and their range has been expanding northward and westward in recent years.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/72/wr/mm7230a2.htm?s_cid=mm7230a2_w">said</a> more than 110,000 suspected cases were identified between 2010 and 2022, but the actual number is likely higher, as people aren’t likely to test for it. The CDC also found in 2023 that 42% of health providers had never heard of Alpha-gal syndrome.

Multiple antiseptics, cleansers, and hand soaps have been voluntarily recalled over bacteria that could cause &#8220;life-threatening sepsis.&#8221;
DermaRite Industries is recalling DermaKleen antiseptic lotion with Vitamin E in 1,000- and 800- milliliter sizes, KleenFoam antimicrobial foam soap in 1,000-milliliter sizes, DermaSerra external analgesic in 7.5-ounce sizes, and PeriGiene antiseptic cleanser in 7.5-ounce sizes.
The products have expiration dates ranging from July 2025 to February 2027, the company <a href="https://www.fda.gov/safety/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts/dermarite-industries-issues-voluntary-nationwide-recall-dermakleen-dermasarra-kleenfoam-and">said</a> in a press release. They were distributed in the United States and in Puerto Rico.
The company recalled the products, which were intended to &#8220;decrease bacteria,&#8221; because of a bacterial &#8220;contamination identified as Burkholderia cepacia.&#8221;
&#8220;The contaminated products may be used by immunosuppressed individuals or by people attending to immunosuppressed individuals,&#8221; the press realease said. &#8220;In healthy individuals with minor skin lesions the use of the product will more likely result in local infections, whereas in immunocompromised individuals the infection is more likely to spread into blood stream leading to life-threatening sepsis.&#8221;

The company told distributors and customers &#8220;to immediately examine available inventory and destroy all affected products.&#8221;
DermaRite said it &#8220;has not received any reports of adverse events.&#8221;
Burkholderia cepacia complex, also called B. cepacia or Bcc, is a bacteria group often found in soil and water, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is dangerous for people with compromised immune systems or chronic lung diseases, especially cystic fibrosis. It poses little risk to healthy individuals.
The CDC said B. cepacia can cause serious respiratory infections, as well as fever and fatigue. Individuals may also experience no symptoms. The bacteria&#8217;s resistance to antibiotics can make it difficult to treat.

Actor Eric Dane just shared an update on his ALS diagnosis, saying his health has been noticeably deteriorating and he fears his young daughters will grow up without a father.
“My left side is functioning, my right side has completely stopped working,” the 52-year-old actor told Diane Sawyer during an interview with ABC&#8217;s “Good Morning America” on Monday. “I feel like maybe a couple more months and I won’t have my left hand either. It’s sobering.”
The “Grey’s Anatomy” alum was diagnosed with the degenerative disease in April after noticing symptoms including weakness in his right hand.  
“I didn’t really think anything of it at the time,” Dane told Sawyer. “I thought maybe I’d been texting too much or my hand was fatigued, but a few weeks later I noticed it got a little worse. So I went and saw a hand specialist, who sent me to another hand specialist. I went and saw a neurologist and the neurologist sent me to another neurologist and said, ‘This is way above my pay grade.&#8217;”

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to loss of muscle control. Over time, individuals with ALS may lose the ability to speak, move, eat, and breathe independently.
ALS has no cure, and people who receive this diagnosis usually live three to five years after symptoms start; however, some people live for decades following their diagnosis. Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking lived with ALS for more than 50 years after being diagnosed at the age of 21 until he died in 2018.
Dane also told Sawyer about the support he’s received from his wife of 14 years, Rebecca Gayheart. The actress filed for divorce in 2018 but called it off one month before Dane revealed his diagnosis. They remain friendly and share the responsibility of raising their two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13.
“We have managed to become better friends and better parents,” the actor said of Gayheart since receiving his diagnosis. “She is probably my biggest champion and my most stalwart supporter, and I lean on her.”
“In my heart, I don’t feel like this is the end for me,” Dane said during the interview. “I’m fighting as much as I can. There’s so much about it that’s out of my control.”
The actor also said he’s upset about his diagnosis because of losing his own father to suicide at the age of 7. “I’m angry because my father was taken from me when I was young, and now there’s a very good chance I’m going to be taken from my girls when they’re very young,” Dane said.

Actor Eric Dane, best known for his roles on “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria,” announced this week that he has ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
&#8220;I have been diagnosed with ALS,” the 52-year-old told People in an <a href="https://people.com/eric-dane-diagnosed-with-als-exclusive-11713179">interview</a>. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
“I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to [the] set of Euphoria next week,” he added. “I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”
Dane has been married to actress Rebecca Gayheart since 2004. The couple has two children, the outlet noted: Billie Beatrice, aged 15, and Georgia Geraldine, who is 13. 
Gayheart previously filed for divorce in 2018 but called it off in March 2025. “We are best of friends. We are really close. We are great coparents,” the actress <a href="https://www.eonline.com/news/1415961/rebecca-gayheart-addresses-eric-dane-marriage-status">told</a> E! News earlier this week. “We really figured out the formula to staying a family and I think our kids are benefiting greatly from it and we are as well.”
“I think it’s important to not look at a relationship that ends as a failure. It’s just a season. It wasn’t a failure. It was a huge success,” Gayheart added without clarifying the status of their relationship right now. “We were married for, I mean, we are still married, but together for 15 years and we had two beautiful kids so I think that’s a successful relationship, and that’s how we look at it.”

The 38-year-old <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/celebrities">reality TV star</a> discussed contracting a bacterial infection during a recent episode of “The Osbournes Podcast,” which he co-hosts with his father and his sister, Kelly.
&#8220;I’d gone and done some filming in a place called Bario in Malaysia … and we were doing a jungle track,&#8221; Osbourne <a href="https://www.mensjournal.com/news/jack-osbourne-contracted-leptospirosis-rat-urine">explained</a>.&#8221; &#8220;I got really sick when I got out of the jungle, but it took about two weeks incubation period and by that point I’d left the jungle.&#8221;
Osbourne said it happened in 2007 during season three of his ITV2 series, “Jack Osbourne: Adrenaline Junkie.”
The father of four conveyed the seriousness of the illness, saying he &#8220;literally was dying. This wasn’t like a fake thing.&#8221;
Osbourne recalled being transferred to several different hospitals before being sent back to London. Even there, he said the medical team couldn’t figure out why his body was “shutting down.”
&#8220;At this point, I’m like five days into my body legitimately shutting down, and I’m lying in this bed, I haven’t eaten, my kidneys and liver are like going into failure, and I&#8217;m like, ‘Uh, I’m f***ing losing it,’&#8221; he continued, saying the doctors put forth several theories including malaria and HIV, but initially could not figure out the problem.
&#8220;This guy who was the head of tropical diseases for the NHS, he’s like the number one guy, left and at 7 a.m. comes running into my room days later like, ‘I’ve got it!’&#8221; Osbourne said.

That doctor diagnosed the reality star with leptospirosis, also called Weil’s disease. The disease can cause jaundice, kidney failure, and internal bleeding.
&#8220;I got it because I’ve got leech bites on the bottom of my feet,&#8221; Osbourne explained on the podcast. &#8220;I was swimming and bathing in a river, and we were climbing on rocks and jumping into this jungle river and I stepped in a puddle on this boulder … and it had rat’s piss in it.&#8221;
The disease can occur anywhere in the world and is a risk for anyone who goes fishing and might prick their finger with a hook and then come in contact with contaminated water. Per the <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4574773/">NIH</a>, there are about one million severe cases of leptospirosis globally every year, resulting in an estimated 58,900 deaths.

Georgia Howe: Dr. Hemmati, thanks so much for coming on.
Dr. Hemmati: It&#8217;s a pleasure.
Georgia: Now, the California Department of Public Health recently <a href="https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/OPA/Pages/CAHAN/Substantial-Increase-in-Tuberculosis-in-California-Recommendations-for-California-Healthcare-Providers.aspx#:~:text=were%202%2C110%20cases.-,Since%202020%2C%20TB%20cases%20in%20California%20have%20been%20increasing%20each,patients%20with%20TB%20are%20hospitalized." target="_blank" rel="noopener">sent out an alert</a> to all doctors about a “Substantial Increase in Tuberculosis.” What did that letter say?
Dr. Hemmati: That letter, which was sent to all doctors, said that the state is experiencing a surge in tuberculosis cases. That&#8217;s number one. Number two, those tuberculosis cases are largely originating from people who have come here from outside the country. And number three, and what is particularly alarming, is that this type of tuberculosis coming into California, and presumably the rest of the United States, has about a 13% or higher death rate.
Georgia: Is there any way to screen people? What&#8217;s the normal procedure for checking people for tuberculosis?
Dr. Hemmati: That&#8217;s a great question. Anytime someone wants to come into the U.S. on a visa or green card a standard part of the process, among other medical assessments, is to perform a tuberculosis blood test and, in many cases, in addition to that, a chest x-ray to simply rule it out. However, when someone doesn&#8217;t have those — and especially if they&#8217;re coming from endemic nations, which we&#8217;re surrounded by, especially to the south — then there&#8217;s a high chance that they could be bringing it in undetected.
Georgia: Now, why is TB such a threat? Can you describe a little bit about how it progresses and why it becomes so intractable?
Dr. Hemmati: Yes. So tuberculosis is caused by a bacteria, not caused by a virus like COVID. It&#8217;s a particularly unusual type of bacteria that can reside in the lungs, sometimes asymptomatically and at other times with no symptoms at all. It can stay like that, even with no symptoms, for years or decades, and at any point basically pop up and cause a horrific infection that chews up the lungs and causes the infected person to spew large amounts of bacteria every time they cough. This is why it has a high death rate, because it literally chews through the lung tissue and leaves nothing behind other than a gaping hole. 
The problem with tuberculosis is that we only have a few medications in our arsenal to try to defeat it. And those medications, even when they do work, can take many months to years of therapy in order to kill the bacteria. The problem now is that we&#8217;re seeing a lot of multidrug resistant tuberculosis — bacteria for which none of the drugs we have available work or work well enough. This is why I think we&#8217;re suddenly seeing such high death rates — death rates we have never been seen before in this country.

Georgia: How easily is it transmitted?
Dr. Hemmati: That’s a great question. You generally have to be in relatively close proximity with a person who&#8217;s actively coughing in order to get tuberculosis, which is pretty rare. It is transmitted in the air from relatively close contacts, but it doesn&#8217;t mean less than six feet. You can be in the same room, in the same general vicinity. It&#8217;s not necessarily easy to get, but once you get it, you have it and you have it for good. Incidentally, the predominant use of the N95 mask is really for prevention of tuberculosis. Whenever we would see someone who had tuberculosis or who was presumed to have a case of tuberculosis in the hospital, we would have to wear the N95 mask simply to be around them. Without a mask like that, being in close proximity puts you at risk.
Georgia: The CDC is also investigating a measles outbreak at a migrant center in Chicago. Can you give us some insight into what’s happening there?
Dr. Hemmati: It is very likely related to immigration. And the reason why I say that is that we&#8217;ve seen measles outbreaks in migrant housing centers, including one just this last week in Chicago. So when you have people coming in the country who are not being screened for having been infected with measles, all of a sudden you are bringing in people who could be carrying this disease and could be spreading it within their community of people who have zero vaccination rates. This can pose a major public health threat.
Georgia: Should the CDC be testing people at the border as they coming across? What would be the solution for this?
Dr. Hemmati: Well, the solution we&#8217;ve already had for decades is to test anyone coming into the country for measles. Without getting that testing done and getting a lot of different vaccinations checked as well, you simply couldn&#8217;t get a green card to immigrate to the U.S. Problems occur when that process is circumvented and the system is simply overwhelmed by people who are doing a runaround, then you get people coming in who are not tested. And, at this point, with the large numbers who are streaming through our borders, it&#8217;s basically impossible to test every single person, especially since so many are considered “gotaways” and are never even processed through the system.

The 51–year-old “Cruel Intentions” star posted about what’s going on in an Instagram update.
“I hurt all the time,” Blair said in the video. “I say that only for you people that hurt also. Like, I get it. And for all of us, for all of us, just aging, it hurts. You have to stretch.”

The actress went on to explain, “It’s hard for me to stretch because of the Ehler-Danlos.”
Ehler-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a group of inherited disorders that affects connective tissue. “Your muscles just aren’t as stable,” she added.
Blair continued, “So, the Ehler-Danlos makes me really, really, really stiff because I’ll pull my muscles too easily and then they’re like slack and sit there. So I get some injuries.”
“This is nothing that’s like horrible, scary stuff or anything. It’s just like one of those extra things that turns into a chronic thing, and you have to watch, because people think stretching’s so good for you, and I’m technically not allowed to stretch, because I’m always stretching,” Blair said.

Meanwhile, the “Legally Blonde” star said, “The MS is fine. I’m still in remission,” mentioning she’s due for an MRI.
“I still get tired, I still am stiff, like, all the time,” Blair said while she was in bed getting an IV, which she added “helps so much.”
“If I’m by myself, I do move and walk better,” she said. “I notice when I go out, it’s still very pronounced.”
The actress said she’s not complaining about her struggles, however. “When people say, ‘What do you want to do with your life?’ It still makes me sad that I just want to sleep and then get on my horse and be better,” Blair said.
“I’m a beginner every day. So it’s like, Groundhog Day — and I am doing really well [but]&#8230;I don’t know if I’ll ever have the coordination or balance or stamina that I want to.”
“Still lucky. Still grateful. Still okay,” she concluded. “But still a bummer.”
