The recent <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/worries-spread-as-ebola-outbreak-hits-grim-milestone?row=0&amp;elementPosition=6&amp;rowType=Web+Search+Overlay">Ebola outbreak</a> in Africa has received a lot of media attention in recent weeks, but there is a potentially deadlier pandemic sweeping across Africa: cholera. 
According to the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/ebola/situation-summary/index.html">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</a>, officials have confirmed 115 deaths out of 598 confirmed cases of Ebola outside the U.S. since the outbreak started in early May. In comparison, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has <a href="https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/all-topics-z/cholera/surveillance-and-disease-data/cholera-monthly">reported</a> 3,596 new cholera cases and 176 deaths in Africa since the end of April. 
The reason cholera is underreported is that the disease has affected Africa and parts of Asia for centuries. 
Cholera is one of the world&#8217;s deadliest diseases and has swept the globe with seven pandemics since its discovery, according to the <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/cholera">World Health Organization</a>. The current outbreak has lasted for 65 years since starting in Southern Asia and has since gone worldwide.
“Researchers estimate that there are 1.3 to 4.0 million cases and 21,000 to 143,000 deaths from cholera worldwide each year,” the WHO reported.
The symptoms of cholera can be even more painful and more quickly lead to death than Ebola symptoms.
Cholera is a disease that triggers rapid, uncontrollable diarrhea that can cause severe dehydration, internal organ failure, and death of infected patients within hours if left untreated.
Ebola, on the other hand, causes internal bleeding. It can take between 2 and 21 days for an infected person to begin showing symptoms, and symptoms can continue for weeks.
Though Ebola does have a higher fatality rate than cholera, studies show that treatment in the United States can significantly lower the chance of death.
“Death rates [for Ebola] drop sharply with intensive supportive care, the kind that keeps patients hydrated and their blood pressure and oxygen stable,” <a href="https://publichealth.berkeley.edu/articles/news/commentary/how-worried-should-you-be-about-ebola">UC Berkeley Public Health</a> reported. &#8220;During the 2014 West Africa outbreak, mortality ran 40 to 70 percent across affected countries; for the small number of patients evacuated to Europe and the U.S., it was closer to 20 percent.”
Ebola, unlike other viruses such as COVID-19, is not airborne but spreads through contact with a contaminated person’s bodily fluids. In Africa, the disease has spread rapidly due in part to local burial customs that dictate that a whole tribe should bury the dead.
Cholera spreads through contaminated water. Thus, while Ebola spreads from person to person, entire villages can contract cholera at the same time due to using a single source of contaminated water.
Cholera has also been increasing in Africa in recent years. Conflicts in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, along with earthquakes and natural disasters, have harmed the water infrastructure in Africa, causing more people to resort to cholera-infested sources.
“Reported cholera cases rose by 5% and deaths by 50% in 2024 compared to 2023, with more than 6000 people dying from a disease that is both preventable and treatable,” the WHO <a href="https://www.who.int/news/item/12-09-2025-cholera-kills-more-people-for-second-consecutive-year-while-prevention-and-treatment-available">stated</a>. “Conflict, climate change, population displacement, and long-term deficiencies in water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure continue to fuel the rise of cholera.”

A rare strain of hantavirus that has a 40% mortality rate and spreads through human-to-human contact could be responsible for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mystery-illness-eyed-in-deaths-aboard-luxury-cruise">three deaths</a> on board a luxury cruise ship, health officials believe.
The outbreak on the MV Hondius, which was sailing from Argentina to Cape Verde, has resulted in at least seven other infections and has trapped other passengers on the ship as government and health officials try to figure out how to get sick passengers off the cruise ship. Most hantavirus strains only spread to humans from rodent droppings, urine, or saliva, but one rare and extremely dangerous strain can spread from human-to-human and “can’t be ruled out,” the World Health Organization said on Tuesday.
“We do believe that there may be some human-to-human transmission that is happening among the really close contacts,” World Health Organization official Maria Van Kerkhove <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/05/05/world-news/cruise-ship-infected-with-terrifying-hantavirus-strain-that-has-40-mortality-rate-who-believes-heres-what-happens-next/">said</a>.
“We do know that some of the cases had very close contact with each other and certainly human-to-human transmission can’t be ruled out,” Van Kerkhove <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/05/05/world/africa/cruise-ship-hantavirus-cape-verde-hondius.html">added</a>.
The deadly strain suspected of spreading on the cruise ship is known as the &#8220;Andes virus&#8221; and is most commonly found in the Andes Mountains of Argentina and Chile. Van Kerkhove assured the media that the risk posed to the public from the hantavirus outbreak on the ship &#8220;is low.&#8221;
The cruise ship, along with its nearly 150 passengers and crew members, is being held off Cape Verde, an archipelago off the coast of West Africa. Van Kerkhove said on Tuesday that the ship would soon move around 1,000 miles northeast to the Canary Islands, a Spanish territory. The Spanish government said it was still trying to figure out &#8220;which port of call is most appropriate&#8221; for the ship to dock.
Health officials in hazmat suits checked out the cruise ship on Monday, and the World Health Organization said that no rodents were found on board, giving more credence to the human-to-human transmission theory. Medical teams also went aboard the ship to look into suspected infections of two crew members, The New York Post reported.
Jake Rosmarin, an American travel blogger who&#8217;s stuck on the ship, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/health/trapped-cruise-ship-passenger-shares-update-cleanliness-ship-amid-deadly-hantavirus-outbreak">said</a> in a video recording on Tuesday that all the healthy passengers &#8220;are doing well&#8221; and are in &#8220;good spirits.&#8221; He said that healthy passengers &#8220;have the option to have meals delivered directly to their cabins,&#8221; but &#8220;gathering in indoor common areas such as the lounge is currently restricted.&#8221;
Two of the people who died after contracting hantavirus were a Dutch couple who had been traveling in South America before boarding the MV Hondius, which left from Argentina on March 20 for a weeks-long voyage. The World Health Organization believes the couple contracted the disease before boarding the ship.
The first person, a 70-year-old Dutch man, died on board the ship on April 11. His wife, a 69-year-old woman, died 15 days later in South Africa while she was attempting to fly home to the Netherlands, The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/05/05/world/africa/cruise-ship-hantavirus-cape-verde-hondius.html">reported</a>. A German national died on the ship on Saturday.
Hantavirus typically begins with flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, and body aches, before potentially progressing to breathing problems and possible lung or heart failure.

Hundreds of measles cases have been confirmed in South Carolina, surpassing the number of infections from an outbreak in West Texas this past summer.

So far, 18 people, including children, have been hospitalized for complications from the disease. No deaths have been reported.
<p class="paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate" data-uri="cms.cnn.com/_components/paragraph/instances/cmkwxk87q00043b6s5tm6zaeg@published" data-editable="text" data-component-name="paragraph" data-article-gutter="true">At the height of the Texas outbreak, 762 cases were reported. That outbreak, which was tied to two deaths of school-aged children, was declared <a href="https://www.dshs.texas.gov/news-alerts/texas-announces-end-west-texas-measles-outbreak?utm_source=chatgpt.com">over</a> back in August.
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2026/01/27/health/largest-us-measles-outbreak-south-carolina">supporting</a> South Carolina&#8217;s response to the outbreak by providing $1.4 million in requested aid. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is also working closely and regularly with state health officials.
The vast majority of those infected in South Carolina — an estimated 88% — are unvaccinated against measles. In Texas, too, the vast majority of those infected were unvaccinated or had no documented measles vaccination: more than 94%.
The surge in cases in numerous states has sparked outcry from some advocacy groups, who are blaming HHS and its leader, Secretary Robert F. Kennedy.
Protect Our Care, for example, projected “MEASLES HQ&#8221; on the D.C. HHS building on Tuesday, <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/5698149-protect-our-care-protests-kennedy/">according</a> to The Hill. Another message said, &#8220;RFK JR: MAKING AMERICA SICK AGAIN.&#8221;
Notably, however, the CDC still recommends children receive the measles vaccine as part of the routine childhood immunization schedule. The immunization comes in the form of the MMR shot, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella.
“Under Secretary Kennedy, CDC surged resources, and multiple states declared measles outbreaks over in 2025,&#8221; HHS Press Secretary Emily Hilliard <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/5698149-protect-our-care-protests-kennedy/">said</a> in a statement. &#8220;Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent measles, and the Secretary has been clear and consistent on this point. All vaccines on the CDC schedule, including MMR, remain covered by insurance, so families do not need to pay out of pocket to get vaccinated.&#8221;
&#8220;Additionally, the U.S. continues to fare better than Canada, Mexico, and Europe in overall measles burden,&#8221; she added. &#8220;This is an international problem.&#8221;
The decline in overall vaccination rates predates the Trump administration, and that&#8217;s due to the botched job of public health officials during the COVID pandemic, Hilliard argued.
“Declines in measles vaccination rates and erosion of public trust began well before this Administration,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Public confidence in health institutions was significantly undermined during the COVID era, particularly in states that imposed prolonged mandates and delivered inconsistent messaging. Those effects continue to be felt today.”

A famed doctor with tens of millions of followers on social media was recently schooled on the issues plaguing public health by a supporter of the &#8220;Make America Healthy Again&#8221; agenda.
Mikhail Varshavski, known online as Dr. Mike, argued on a recent episode of Jubilee&#8217;s &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y90R8BPc8Ag">Surrounded</a>&#8221; that Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. should step down from his position, citing cuts to bureaucracy within the department.
A supporter of the MAHA movement named Brian needed under two minutes to decimate Dr. Mike&#8217;s argument.
&#8220;So considering all of that &#8230; where did that get us?&#8221; the MAHA supporter asked Dr. Mike, responding to specific HHS cuts cited by the online personality.
Notably, Secretary Kennedy has defended cuts to HHS, citing absurd bureaucracy and overlapping offices that he contends are wasteful and not helping improve public health.
&#8220;Look at the state of America, of Americans&#8217; health, and you tell me that the public is actually healthy,&#8221; Brian dared Dr. Mike. &#8220;What RFK is doing is he is saying, &#8216;enough is enough, something has to change.&#8217; And I will say this very politely &#8212; I think that you have to be f***ing insane to say &#8216;more&#8217; is somehow going to get us out of the current public health crisis that we have right now.&#8221;
&#8220;Americans are fat and they are sick and it is not getting better, and taking more and more money and continuing to flush it down the toilet is not going to solve the problem,&#8221; he continued.
&#8220;We know what will stop cancer dead in its tracks. We know what will stop all chronic disease dead in its tracks. Do you know what it is?&#8221; Brian asked.
&#8220;Lifestyle changes,&#8221; Dr. Mike responded.
&#8220;Lifestyle changes,&#8221; the MAHA supporter agreed. &#8220;The American Heart Association has known about this for years, that the most important predictor of longevity, risk of chronic disease, all-cause mortality is <a href="https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/pdf/10.1161/cir.0000000000000461">VO2 max</a>. So why aren&#8217;t doctors &#8212; why isn&#8217;t the government creating a public health system that says, &#8216;you know what, we&#8217;re gonna focus on VO2 max because even if we stopped every dollar we had [going] into cancer research right now, and we took that money and we said, let&#8217;s get people moving, let&#8217;s increase their VO2 max.'&#8221;
&#8220;The question is, when is enough enough to admit that the system you are a part of has drastically failed Americans?&#8221; Brian posed.
The supporter added that Secretary Kennedy, &#8220;by the very fact of how he looks in his 70s, does more to encourage people to live a healthy lifestyle and truly make America healthy again.&#8221;

Jamaica has declared an outbreak of the bacterial disease leptospirosis, suspected of causing six deaths, following the devastation from Hurricane Melissa in late October.
The Category 5 hurricane slammed into the Caribbean island on October 28, causing catastrophic flooding and landslides with some 30 inches (76 cm) of rain. The resulting stagnant, contaminated water has created a breeding ground for the disease, officials said.
Health Minister Christopher Tufton announced on Friday that nine cases were confirmed between October 30 and November 20, with 28 additional suspected cases.
Leptospirosis is spread through water or soil contaminated by the urine of infected animals, such as rodents. The infection can enter the human body through cuts in the skin or through the eyes, nose and mouth.
While initial symptoms such as fever, headache and muscle aches can be mistaken for the flu, the disease can progress to a severe and potentially fatal form. It can cause kidney failure, liver damage, meningitis and severe internal bleeding.
&#8220;The outbreak follows the passage of the storm which has created conditions that have increased the risk of exposure to contaminated water and soil,&#8221; Tufton said at a press conference.

He warned that anyone coming into contact with floodwaters could be at risk, including &#8220;farmers, persons engaged in cleanup activities, emergency responders and others navigating flood areas.&#8221;
Hurricane Melissa left an estimated $10 billion in damages, according to Jamaican officials, hobbling the nation&#8217;s key tourism and agriculture sectors and damaging nearly 200,000 buildings.

The first known fatality from a red meat allergy intolerance spread by ticks has been recorded.
The otherwise healthy 47-year-old New Jersey man died abruptly after consuming beef at a restaurant in the summer of 2024. He had been camping with his family two weeks prior, per <a href="https://newsroom.uvahealth.com/2025/11/13/1st-death-linked-to-meat-allergy-spread-by-ticks/">UVA Health</a>. 
The man&#8217;s son found him unconscious on the floor of a bathroom surrounded by vomit, and the man was declared dead at a hospital. The autopsy declared it was a &#8220;sudden unexplained death,&#8221; but his wife pushed for answers, and eventually it was discovered that his death could be traced back to a tick bite.
Former Chief of UVA Health’s Division of Asthma, Allergy and Clinical Immunology Thomas Platts-Mills determined via blood samples taken post-mortem that the man had been sensitized to alpha-gal, a sugar found in mammalian meat, the outlet noted. Alpha-gal syndrome is caused by a bite from the Lone Star tick, which causes people to have an anaphylaxis reaction. Symptoms include a rash, nausea, and vomiting after consuming meat.
The same man had become ill after a steak dinner two weeks prior and had told his son he felt like he was dying. 
“The important information for the public is: First, that severe abdominal pain occurring 3 to 5 hours after eating beef, pork or lamb should be investigated as a possible episode of anaphylaxis; and, second, that tick bites that itch for more than a week or larvae of ticks often called ‘chiggers’ can induce or increase sensitization to mammalian-derived meat,” Platts-Mills said. “On the other hand, most individuals who have mild to moderate episodes of hives can control symptoms with an appropriate diet.”
While most individuals who develop alpha-gal sensitivities don’t have such an extreme allergic reaction, it is a possibility that severe illness or death can occur. Platts-Mills also warned doctors to be on the lookout for these types of responses in their patients.
“It is important that both doctors and patients who live in an area of the country where Lone Star ticks are common should be aware of the risk of sensitization,” Platts-Mills said. “More specifically, if they have unexpected episodes of severe abdominal pain occurring several hours after eating mammalian meat, they should be investigated for possible sensitization to the oligosaccharide alpha-gal.”
Lone Star ticks are common throughout the South, Southeast, and much of the eastern and midwestern United States, and their range has been expanding northward and westward in recent years.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/72/wr/mm7230a2.htm?s_cid=mm7230a2_w">said</a> more than 110,000 suspected cases were identified between 2010 and 2022, but the actual number is likely higher, as people aren’t likely to test for it. The CDC also found in 2023 that 42% of health providers had never heard of Alpha-gal syndrome.

Multiple antiseptics, cleansers, and hand soaps have been voluntarily recalled over bacteria that could cause &#8220;life-threatening sepsis.&#8221;
DermaRite Industries is recalling DermaKleen antiseptic lotion with Vitamin E in 1,000- and 800- milliliter sizes, KleenFoam antimicrobial foam soap in 1,000-milliliter sizes, DermaSerra external analgesic in 7.5-ounce sizes, and PeriGiene antiseptic cleanser in 7.5-ounce sizes.
The products have expiration dates ranging from July 2025 to February 2027, the company <a href="https://www.fda.gov/safety/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts/dermarite-industries-issues-voluntary-nationwide-recall-dermakleen-dermasarra-kleenfoam-and">said</a> in a press release. They were distributed in the United States and in Puerto Rico.
The company recalled the products, which were intended to &#8220;decrease bacteria,&#8221; because of a bacterial &#8220;contamination identified as Burkholderia cepacia.&#8221;
&#8220;The contaminated products may be used by immunosuppressed individuals or by people attending to immunosuppressed individuals,&#8221; the press realease said. &#8220;In healthy individuals with minor skin lesions the use of the product will more likely result in local infections, whereas in immunocompromised individuals the infection is more likely to spread into blood stream leading to life-threatening sepsis.&#8221;

Burkholderia cepacia complex, also called B. cepacia or Bcc, is a bacteria group often found in soil and water, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is dangerous for people with compromised immune systems or chronic lung diseases, especially cystic fibrosis. It poses little risk to healthy individuals.
The CDC said B. cepacia can cause serious respiratory infections, as well as fever and fatigue. Individuals may also experience no symptoms. The bacteria&#8217;s resistance to antibiotics can make it difficult to treat.

Actor Eric Dane just shared an update on his ALS diagnosis, saying his health has been noticeably deteriorating and he fears his young daughters will grow up without a father.
“My left side is functioning, my right side has completely stopped working,” the 52-year-old actor told Diane Sawyer during an interview with ABC&#8217;s “Good Morning America” on Monday. “I feel like maybe a couple more months and I won’t have my left hand either. It’s sobering.”
The “Grey’s Anatomy” alum was diagnosed with the degenerative disease in April after noticing symptoms including weakness in his right hand.  
“I didn’t really think anything of it at the time,” Dane told Sawyer. “I thought maybe I’d been texting too much or my hand was fatigued, but a few weeks later I noticed it got a little worse. So I went and saw a hand specialist, who sent me to another hand specialist. I went and saw a neurologist and the neurologist sent me to another neurologist and said, ‘This is way above my pay grade.&#8217;”

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to loss of muscle control. Over time, individuals with ALS may lose the ability to speak, move, eat, and breathe independently.
ALS has no cure, and people who receive this diagnosis usually live three to five years after symptoms start; however, some people live for decades following their diagnosis. Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking lived with ALS for more than 50 years after being diagnosed at the age of 21 until he died in 2018.
Dane also told Sawyer about the support he’s received from his wife of 14 years, Rebecca Gayheart. The actress filed for divorce in 2018 but called it off one month before Dane revealed his diagnosis. They remain friendly and share the responsibility of raising their two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13.
“We have managed to become better friends and better parents,” the actor said of Gayheart since receiving his diagnosis. “She is probably my biggest champion and my most stalwart supporter, and I lean on her.”
“In my heart, I don’t feel like this is the end for me,” Dane said during the interview. “I’m fighting as much as I can. There’s so much about it that’s out of my control.”
The actor also said he’s upset about his diagnosis because of losing his own father to suicide at the age of 7. “I’m angry because my father was taken from me when I was young, and now there’s a very good chance I’m going to be taken from my girls when they’re very young,” Dane said.

Actor Eric Dane, best known for his roles on “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria,” announced this week that he has ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
&#8220;I have been diagnosed with ALS,” the 52-year-old told People in an <a href="https://people.com/eric-dane-diagnosed-with-als-exclusive-11713179">interview</a>. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
“I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to [the] set of Euphoria next week,” he added. “I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”
Dane has been married to actress Rebecca Gayheart since 2004. The couple has two children, the outlet noted: Billie Beatrice, aged 15, and Georgia Geraldine, who is 13. 
Gayheart previously filed for divorce in 2018 but called it off in March 2025. “We are best of friends. We are really close. We are great coparents,” the actress <a href="https://www.eonline.com/news/1415961/rebecca-gayheart-addresses-eric-dane-marriage-status">told</a> E! News earlier this week. “We really figured out the formula to staying a family and I think our kids are benefiting greatly from it and we are as well.”
“I think it’s important to not look at a relationship that ends as a failure. It’s just a season. It wasn’t a failure. It was a huge success,” Gayheart added without clarifying the status of their relationship right now. “We were married for, I mean, we are still married, but together for 15 years and we had two beautiful kids so I think that’s a successful relationship, and that’s how we look at it.”
The popular teen drama “Euphoria” is scheduled to begin production for season 3 next week. The Emmy Award-winning HBO series includes Dane as Cal Jacobs, patriarch of the Jacobs family. Dane became nationally known thanks to his role as Dr. Mark Sloan, nicknamed “McSteamy,” on six seasons of the ABC medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy.”
ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to loss of muscle control. Over time, individuals with ALS may lose the ability to speak, move, eat, and breathe independently.
ALS has no cure, and people who receive this diagnosis usually live three to five years after symptoms start, however, some people live for decades following their diagnosis. Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking lived with ALS for more than 50 years after being diagnosed at the age of 21 until he died in 2018.

An eight-year-old boy named Liam reportedly suffering from a rare brain disorder and growth hormone deficiency was brought to tears after he opened an envelope his mother gave him and read a birthday message of hope from former President Donald Trump.
The video was <a href="https://x.com/kevin_smith45/status/1834318844778717335">posted</a> to social media on Thursday by podcaster Kevin Smith.
As Liam&#8217;s mother cautioned him to open the envelope carefully, he opened it. As he perused it, his mother asked him, “Can you read it out loud?” That brought the boy to tears, as he covered his eyes and handed the letter to his mother, who read:

We are so encouraged by the strength and determination you have shown throughout your young life, and send our love and best wishes to you as you continue to fight. She then asked her son, “Can you tell me who signed that?”
“Donald Trump,” he replied.
“He knew it was your birthday coming up?” his mother asked as Liam burst into tears again and nodded.
“What do you say to him?” his mother asked.
Through tears, with squinched-up eyes, Liam managed, “Thank you, “ then motioned in sign language as he tearfully said, “I love you.”

Smith, the podcast host who posted the video, <a href="https://x.com/kevin_smith45/status/1834328081848258726">stated</a>, “This was sent to me by Liam’s family… Donald Trump didn’t ask for Credit for this. He just did it. Because he’s a good person. No matter what the media tries to say.&#8221;
