Two people who ran a Swiss bar that burst into flames during a New Year&#8217;s Eve party, killing 40, are under criminal investigation on suspicion of offenses including homicide by negligence, prosecutors said on Saturday.
Two days after the fire, in which 119 people suffered injuries including severe burns, officials were still trying to identify many of those killed and attention turned to how one of Switzerland&#8217;s worst tragedies could have occurred.
The bar&#8217;s two operators are suspected of offenses including homicide by negligence, causing bodily harm by negligence and arson by negligence, prosecutors in Valais, the canton that is home to the bar in the upscale ski resort of Crans-Montana, said in a statement. They did not name the pair.
&#8220;It was an enormous tragedy. We&#8217;re all so sorry that this had to happen,&#8221; Swiss Justice Minister Beat Jans told reporters, standing in front of the cordoned-off bar, Le Constellation.
He said temperatures during the blaze must have reached &#8220;500, 600 degrees (Celsius, 900-1,100 Fahrenheit)&#8221;.
Reuters was not immediately able to contact the bar&#8217;s owners for comment or reach the prosecutors to verify whether they were the people referred to.
Responding to the news of the criminal probe, residents still grieving over the sudden loss of life said it was important authorities get to the bottom of the case.
&#8220;We need a moment to reflect,&#8221; said one, Patricia Mazzoni, 55. &#8220;But afterwards, I&#8217;d like an independent investigation. An independent investigation to find out who failed here.&#8221;
Witnesses reported seeing staff at Le Constellation carrying so-called fountain candles atop bottles of champagne, and questions have also arisen about a foam material used to soundproof the ceiling of the basement where revelers danced.

Beatrice Pilloud, chief prosecutor of Valais, said indications were that the fire started because the sparklers got too near to the ceiling.
&#8220;From there, a rapid, very rapid and widespread blaze ensued,&#8221; she said on Friday afternoon.
Investigations will look at renovations made to the bar, the fire extinguishing systems and escape routes, as well as the number of people inside when the blaze began, prosecutors said.
Police arrived quickly at the scene, according to local residents, but the fire burned victims so severely that investigators said they would need days to identify the bodies.
Illustrating the painstaking nature of that work, the Valais prosecutors&#8217; office said on Saturday that the police had identified the bodies of four Swiss victims aged between 16 and 21 &#8211; two female and two male &#8211; and returned them to their families. It did not name them.
On Friday, officials had only identified one of the dead, a teenage Italian international golfer, Emanuele Galeppini.
According to two people familiar with the investigation, some of the victims may be under 16.
Local residents said the bar was popular with young people and the Swiss government said many of the dead were likely youths. Beer and wine can be drunk from age 16 in Switzerland.
One of the bar&#8217;s two owners, Jacques Moretti, told the Tribune de Geneve newspaper that Le Constellation had been checked three times in 10 years and that everything was done according to the rules.
Stephane Ganzer, head of security in Valais, said the investigation would determine if the bar had undergone its annual building inspections, but that the town had not raised concerns or reported defects to the canton.

The fire that killed at least 40 people at a ski resort in Switzerland on New Year&#8217;s Eve was caused by sparklers, according to Swiss officials.
In a press conference Friday, officials said it appears as though the fire was ignited by sparklers on top of champagne bottles that were too close to the ceiling. Officials described the fire as a &#8220;flashover event,&#8221; meaning the entire room caught fire almost instantly.
At least 40 people died in the fire and 119 more are in the hospital as of Friday morning, some with serious injuries.
The blaze broke out in the early hours of Thursday morning in Valais at Le Constellation, a bar at the Swiss ski resort Crans-Montana.
Valais Attorney General Beatrice Pilloud said officials are looking into any criminal activity related to the fire. Pilloud said if criminal activity was involved, investigations will be opened for fire negligence, homicide by negligence, and injuries by negligence.
Pilloud said investigators are also looking into the building&#8217;s regulations and safety measures, as well as how many people were inside the building when the fire broke out.

&#8220;The investigations will focus on the renovation work that had been carried out in the bar, the materials used, the licensing arrangements, the safety and security arrangements, fire extinguishers, emergency exits, and other firefighting equipment,&#8221; the attorney general added.
But the first priority is identifying the victims and bringing closure to families.
Authorities said Friday it could be days before the identities of those killed are revealed. Officials are looking into dental and DNA records because some of the bodies are unrecognizable from the burns.
Of those injured who have been formally identified, 71 are Swiss, 14 are French, 11 are Italian, and others are from Bosnia, Serbia, Portugal, and Belgium, according to officials.
A witness told the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/clyml77ml7jo">BBC</a> he saw people burning from head to foot as he tried to help people get away from the flames.
Another witness told the BBC that she and her husband were leaving the bar when they saw people screaming and crying while being carried out on stretchers.
Outside the bar, candles and flowers covered the ground in a makeshift shrine to honor the victims.
A vigil will take place January 9 as part of a national day of mourning.

Investigators on Friday set about the painful task of identifying the burned bodies of a blaze that engulfed a crowded bar and killed around 40 people at a New Year&#8217;s Eve party in the upscale Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana.
So severe were the burns suffered by the mostly young crowd of revelers in the Le Constellation bar that Swiss officials said it could take days before they name all the victims of the fire that also injured 115, many of them seriously.
Parents of missing youths anxiously issued pleas for news of their loved ones as foreign embassies scrambled to work out if their nationals were among those caught up in one of the worst tragedies to befall modern Switzerland.
&#8220;The first objective is to assign names to all the bodies,&#8221; Crans-Montana&#8217;s mayor Nicolas Feraud told a press conference on Thursday evening. This, he said, could take days.
Mathias Reynard, head of government of the canton of Valais, said experts were using dental and DNA samples for the task.
&#8220;All this work needs to be done because the information is so terrible and sensitive that nothing can be told to the families unless we are 100 percent sure,&#8221; he said.

What caused the blaze was unclear. Swiss authorities said it appeared to be an accident rather than an attack.
Some accounts from survivors and footage broadcast on social media suggested that the ceiling of the bar&#8217;s basement may have caught fire when sparkling candles got too close.
Residents of Crans-Montana, which has the distinction of being not only a popular draw for skiers, but also golfers, were stunned by the inferno. Many knew victims and some said they were lucky not to have been there themselves.
Hundreds of people stood in silence near the scene as they came to pay their respects to the victims on Thursday night.
&#8220;You think you&#8217;re safe here but this can happen anywhere. They were people like us,&#8221; said Piermarco Pani, an 18-year-old who, like many others in the town, knew the bar well.
Dozens of people left flowers or lit candles on a makeshift altar at the top of the road leading to the bar which police had cordoned off. Some cried, others quietly hugged one another.
Behind the cordon, the bodies of some victims still lay in the bar, police said, as they pledged to work around the clock to identify everyone who succumbed to the blaze.
Kean Sarbach, 17, said he had spoken to four people who escaped from the bar, some with burns, and that they had told him the flames had spread very quickly.
Elisa Sousa, 17, said she was meant to be there but ended up spending the evening at a family gathering instead.
&#8220;And honestly, I&#8217;ll need thank my mother a hundred times for not letting me go,&#8221; she said at the vigil for the victims. &#8220;Because God knows where I&#8217;d be now.&#8221;

DHAKA (Reuters) — At least 19 people were killed and 164 injured as a Bangladesh air force training jet crashed into a college and school campus in the capital Dhaka on Monday after experiencing a technical problem shortly after take-off, a military spokesperson said.
The F-7 BGI jet took off at 1:06 p.m. (0706 GMT) from the Bangladesh Air Force base in Kurmitola, Dhaka, as part of a routine training mission, but encountered a mechanical failure, said the spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Sami Ud Dowla Chowdhury.
&#8220;The pilot &#8230; made a valiant attempt to divert the aircraft away from densely populated areas. Despite his best efforts, the aircraft &#8230; crashed into a two-storey building belonging to Milestone School and College,&#8221; he said.
The pilot was among those killed in the incident, the military said, adding that a committee had been formed to investigate its cause.
The F-7  BGI is the final and most advanced variant in China&#8217;s Chengdu J-7/F-7 aircraft family, according to Jane’s Information Group. Bangladesh signed a contract for 16 aircraft in 2011 and deliveries were completed by 2013.
The Chengdu F-7 is the licence-built version of the Soviet MiG-21.
Videos of the aftermath of the crash showed a big fire near a lawn emitting a thick plume of smoke into the sky, as crowds watched from a distance.
Firefighters sprayed water on the mangled remains of the plane, which appeared to have rammed into the side of a building, damaging iron grills and creating a gaping hole in the structure, footage filmed by Reuters showed.

&#8220;A third-grade student was brought in dead, and three others, aged 12, 14 and 40, were admitted to the hospital,&#8221; said Bidhan Sarker, head of the burn unit at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, where some victims were taken.
Images from the scene also showed people screaming and crying as others tried to comfort them.
&#8220;When I was picking (up) my kids and went to the gate, I realised something came from behind &#8230; I heard an explosion. When I looked back, I only saw fire and smoke,&#8221; said Masud Tarik, a teacher at the school.
The incident comes a little over a month after an Air India plane crashed on top of a medical college hostel in neighbouring India&#8217;s Ahmedabad city, killing 241 of the 242 people on board and 19 on the ground, marking the world&#8217;s worst aviation disaster in a decade.

President Donald Trump, along with first lady Melania Trump, traveled to Central Texas on Friday, one week after sudden catastrophic flooding swept through multiple counties, killing at least 121 people and destroying homes and businesses.
The president and first lady flew into San Antonio and then <a href="https://x.com/RapidResponse47/status/1943722271979221181">boarded</a> Marine One, which took them 60 miles northwest to Kerrville, Texas, the small town that took the brunt of the flooding last week. Of the 120 people who have been reported dead throughout the state, 96 of them — including 36 children — were killed in Kerr County, where Kerrville is the county seat.

More than 170 people are still missing in the region as search teams comb the devastated area. The president said that before the press conference, he and the first lady &#8220;spent a lot of time with&#8221; the families of victims. Trump also praised the first responders who saved hundreds of lives in the flood.
Over the weekend, Trump <a href="https://www.fema.gov/press-release/20250706/president-donald-j-trump-approves-major-disaster-declaration-texas">declared</a> a major disaster in Texas, allowing federal assistance to flow to the state.
“Nobody ever saw a thing like this coming,” Trump <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory/trump-plans-tour-texas-flood-damage-scope-disaster-123666823">told</a> NBC News on Thursday. &#8220;This is a once-in-every-200-year deal.”
Floodwaters rose over 30 feet in an hour in some areas along the Guadaloupe River, giving many people staying near the river over the July Fourth holiday weekend little to no chance to evacuate before the water overtook them. At Camp Mystic, a Christian girls&#8217; summer camp in Kerr County, the devastation was unfathomable, with 27 campers and counselors dying in the flooding.
In the aftermath of the flooding, the Trump administration has faced criticism for cuts to the National Weather Service (NWS), with some Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), questioning whether an understaffed NWS sent flood warnings too late for many people in the path of the disaster. The White House <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/white-house-pushes-back-nws-criticism-texas-flooding/story?id=123544699">shot back</a> at such criticism. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said earlier this week, &#8220;Blaming President Trump for these floods is a depraved lie, and it serves no purpose during this time of national mourning.&#8221;
The National Weather Service Employees Organization, which represents NWS employees, also pushed back against allegations that Trump&#8217;s staffing cuts hindered the service&#8217;s ability to issue timely warnings.
“The WFOs [weather forecasting offices] had adequate staffing and resources as they issued timely forecasts and warnings leading up to the storm,” <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/science/science-news/national-weather-service-nws-staff-cuts-trump-budget-texas-floods-rcna217139">said</a> Tom Fahy, the president of the NWS Employee Organization.
In a statement to <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/white-house-pushes-back-nws-criticism-texas-flooding/story?id=123544699">ABC News</a>, the National Weather Service added, &#8220;Flash Flood Warnings were issued on the night of July 3 and in the early morning of July 4, giving preliminary lead times of more than three hours before warning criteria were met.&#8221;

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott provided another tragic update on the catastrophic floods on Tuesday, saying that 161 people remain missing in Kerr County, Texas, while another 12 people are still missing in other parts of the state.
Earlier on Tuesday, <a href="https://x.com/BillMelugin_/status/1942691818065580061">reports</a> had the number of those missing at 40, but the governor&#8217;s latest update reveals an even grimmer situation after the state was devastated by the floods that hit over the July Fourth holiday. The death toll from the flooding across the state reached 109 on Monday, including dozens of children.
“To put this into perspective &#8230; there are far more fatalities than there were in Hurricane Harvey. That’s how catastrophic this is,” Abbott <a href="https://www.click2houston.com/news/local/2025/07/08/texas-gov-greg-abbott-provides-latest-numbers-regarding-fatalities-missing-people-in-hill-country-floods/">said</a>, giving an <a href="https://x.com/GregAbbott_TX/status/1942682122839376065">update</a> from Hunt, Texas, in Kerr County.
&#8220;Know this: We will not stop until every missing person is accounted for,&#8221; he <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/live-blog/texas-floods-live-updates-death-passes-100-rcna217415/rcrd84625?canonicalCard=true">added</a>. &#8220;Know this also: There very likely could be more added to that list.&#8221;
Five young girls and one counselor remain missing from Camp Mystic, the Christian girls&#8217; camp that took the brunt of the flooding when the Guadalupe River in Central Texas rose more than 30 feet in under an hour in some spots. Emergency responders have rescued at least 850 people. One United States Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer, Scott Ruskan, is credited with saving 165 people, most of them children, alone.
As more days go by in the rescue operation, however, hope for finding anyone alive fades into dread that any bodies found will only add to the already-large death toll.
“The primary job right now continues to be locating everybody who was affected by this flood,” Abbott said.
Flood victims include children such as 8-year-olds, Renee Smajstrla and Eloise Peck, who were attending Camp Mystic, and 64-year-old Sherry Richardson, whose cabin in Liberty Hill, Texas, was <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/live/2025/07/08/us/texas-floods/d4fb0256-df9f-5328-a32a-8b77c20670c0?smid=url-share">swept away</a> on Saturday morning. The bodies of sisters Blaire and Brooke Harber were <a href="https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/article/sisters-found-hands-locked-together-following-20630269.php">found</a> 15 miles from where the flood waters washed them away from a cabin near the river, according to the Houston Chronicle. Blair and Brooke, ages 11 and 13, were found clinging to each other while holding rosaries, their aunt said.

Camp Mystic, the Christian summer camp for young girls at the center of the catastrophic flooding in Central Texas, said on Monday that the death toll of campers and counselors has risen to 27.
The camp posted an <a href="https://www.campmystic.com/">update</a> on its website Monday morning, revealing the current death toll and adding, &#8220;Our hearts are broken alongside our families that are enduring this unimaginable tragedy. We are praying for them constantly.&#8221;
&#8220;We have been in communication with local and state authorities who are tirelessly deploying extensive resources to search for our missing girls,&#8221; Camp Mystic added. &#8220;We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from community, first responders, and officials at every level.&#8221;
The record-breaking torrent from the Guadalupe River reaped <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/search-for-missing-texas-flood-victims-intensifies-as-death-toll-rises?topStoryPosition=undefined&amp;author=Zach+Jewell&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=4&amp;row=1&amp;rowHeadline=Top+Stories&amp;rowType=Top+Stories&amp;title=Search+For+Missing+Texas+Flood+Victims+Intensifies+As+Death+Toll+Rises">destruction</a> over the July Fourth weekend, with Camp Mystic and the surrounding area of Kerrville facing the brunt of the devastation. People in the camp had little time to flee as the river rose more than 30 feet in an hour in some spots during the middle of the night.
Throughout Central Texas, at least 82 people have been killed in the flooding. In Kerr County alone, where the camp is located, 68 people have been confirmed dead, 28 of whom were children. It&#8217;s unclear if Camp Mystic&#8217;s update adds to the total death toll or if the 27 campers and counselors were already included. It&#8217;s also unclear if any campers are still missing.
Some of the young girls who were killed in the flooding have been identified, including 8-year-old Renee Smajstrla, 9-year-old Lila Bonner, 8-year-old Eloise Peck, 9-year-old Janie Hunt, and Sarah Marsh, who was about to start third grade.
The camp&#8217;s director, Richard &#8220;Dick&#8221; Eastland, died while trying to rescue campers from the floodwaters.
&#8220;He died doing what he’d done for 50 years—protecting the girls of Camp Mystic,&#8221; <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ryanwolftvnews/posts/1260843148735770?ref=embed_post">wrote</a> FOX San Antonio anchor Ryan Wolf. &#8220;Richard &#8216;Dick&#8217; Eastland, beloved camp director and co-owner, was swept away in the Hill Country floods while trying to reach campers in danger. His final act was one of courage, devotion, and love.&#8221;
Counselor Chloe Childress, who had just graduated from high school, was also identified as a victim who &#8220;lost her life upholding this selfless and fierce commitment to others.&#8221;
“Chloe Childress lived a beautiful life that saturated those around her with contagious joy, unending grace, and abiding faith. Returning as a counselor to the place she loved so dearly, Chloe was looking forward to dedicating her summer days to loving and mentoring young girls at Camp Mystic,” the Childress family said in a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/AmandaHTV/posts/%EF%B8%8Frest-in-peace-chloe-childress%EF%B8%8F-the-camp-mystic-counselor-is-being-honored-by-he/1151242190156476/">statement</a>. “Our family was shocked to hear of the horrific tragic flooding in the hill country, and we were devastated to learn that our precious Chloe was among the victims. A documentary film is in the works about the ill-fated <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/oceangate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">OceanGate</a> Titan submersible, and it promises to tell the story behind the headlines about the underwater craft that imploded, killing all five of its passengers in June 2023.
The film is directed by Aron Arngrimsson, who was the last person to see the Titan crew alive before the small crew set out on its doomed fatal trip to see the remains of the Titanic on June 18, 2023, the <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/titan-submersible-implosion-documentary-in-works-1236088385/?taid=6761ae58a1361c00013e3066&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter">Hollywood Reporter</a> reported.
“He [Arngrimsson] exclusively tells the emotional experience of five Titan crew members, revealing the family stories behind the media headlines and exposing the painful consequences of an exploration gone wrong,” a synopsis from the producers read, per THR.
The documentary, currently in post production, comes from <a href="https://variety.com/2024/film/news/titan-submersible-disaster-documentary-being-made-1236251341/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Arngrimsson&#8217;s Dirty Dozen Productions</a> and RadicalMedia, the outlet noted.

“The unprecedented access Aron had to the Titan crew, their families and this story, was remarkable,” Stacey Reiss, executive producer at RadicalMedia, said.

The movie will include actual first-hand footage taken by Arngrimsson of the Titan submersible heading out on its fatal expedition.

A new photo has been released which shows the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/oceangate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Titanic submersible Titan’s</a> final resting spot after the underwater craft imploded, killing all five of its passengers in June 2023.
During the U.S. Coast Guard hearing on Monday into the cause of the implosion of the OceanGate vessel, officials revealed a photo that shows the submersible on the bottom of the ocean floor in the North Atlantic Ocean, following its final dive to see the remains of the Titanic on June 18, 2023, <a href="https://people.com/photo-shows-moment-titan-sub-wreckage-was-found-after-implosion-8713551?hid=4f90b78dc31e627328d98338e1fa49d03b364abc&amp;did=14594199-20240917&amp;utm_source=ppl&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=ppl-news_newsletter&amp;utm_content=091724&amp;lctg=4f90b78dc31e627328d98338e1fa49d03b364abc&amp;lr_input=a08f4ce0dc67f7e22d138c82b9ce538ad294bfaca0b145e2f563962e58e05ef7&amp;utm_term=AM">People magazine</a> reported.

Officials said during the hearing that the new photo has led to the “conclusive evidence of a catastrophic loss” of the submersible and the passengers on board.

After about 15 minutes, Titan responded that it had communication, and the Polar Prince replied, “I need better comms from you.”
Titan, in turn, responded, “yes,” and said they “lost system oand [sic] chat settings.”
At 10:15 a.m., the Polar Prince asked again, “status? do you see polar prince on your display?” Titan responded soon after, “yes,” and, “all good here.”
Minutes later, Titan notified the Polar Prince that they were “east south east [of] the nbow [sic],” which officials suspected meant the crew had almost reached their destination, the wreckage of the Titanic.
Titan then asked the Polar Prince if they were also at the bow, and Polar Prince said, “making our way there … your position jumps significantly each ping” — which the ship repeated to the Titan at 10:36.
At 10:47, Titan messaged that they “dropped two [weights],” and contact was then lost almost immediately, at 10:47:32 a.m., according to the Coast Guard. That was at a depth of nearly 3,350 meters and a pressure of 4,900 pounds per square inch, the magazine noted.

Titan then asked the Polar Prince if they were also at the bow, and Polar Prince said, “making our way there … your position jumps significantly each ping” — which the ship repeated to the Titan at 10:36. 
At 10:47, Titan messaged that they “dropped two [weights],” and contact was then lost almost immediately, at 10:47:32 a.m., according to the Coast Guard. That was at a depth of nearly 3,350 meters and a pressure of 4,900 pounds per square inch, the magazine noted.
After the ship lost contact with Titan, a four-day rescue mission from the United States and Canada ensued including using airplanes, boats, and submersibles in the attempt to find and save the crew, <a href="https://variety.com/2023/film/news/titanic-submersible-oceangate-movie-1235740084/">Variety</a> noted.

“A debris field was discovered within the search area by an ROV near the Titanic,” USGC Northeast said in a statement. “Experts within the unified command are evaluating the information.”
“A debris field implies a break-up of the submersible … that really sort of indicates what is the worst-case scenario, which is a catastrophic failure and generally that’s an implosion,” marine scientist and rescue expert David Mearns told <a href="https://news.sky.com/story/debris-field-discovered-within-search-area-near-titanic-us-coast-guard-says-12906735">Sky News</a>.

The container ship that rammed into a support beam of Francis Scott Key Bridge — which caused the Baltimore bridge to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/baltimore-bridge-collapses-resulting-in-mass-casualty-event-after-its-struck-by-cargo-ship" target="_blank" rel="noopener">collapse</a> in March — suffered a pair of electrical blackouts the day before the collision that resulted in the deaths of six construction workers, according to federal investigators.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the March 26 incident that took place in one of America&#8217;s busiest ports and released a report on Tuesday, saying that the ship, called the Dali, had two electrical malfunctions on March 25. Just hours later, two more electrical blackouts made it impossible for the Dali&#8217;s crew to steer the ship away from the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
&#8220;On March 25, about 10 hours before leaving Baltimore, the Dali experienced a blackout (loss of electrical power to the HV [high voltage] and LV [low voltage] buses) during in-port maintenance,&#8221; the NTSB preliminary <a href="https://www.ntsb.gov/investigations/Documents/DCA24MM031_PreliminaryReport%203.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> said. The loss of power occurred after &#8220;a crewmember mistakenly closed an inline engine exhaust damper.&#8221;
&#8220;Vessel power was restored when crewmembers manually closed HR2 and LR2 [step-down transformers]. Generator no. 3 continued to run for a short period, but insufficient fuel pressure caused its speed to decrease, and its breaker (DGR3) opened; a second blackout (another loss of electrical power to the HV and LV buses) occurred,&#8221; the report added.
In the early hours of March 26, the Dali suffered two more electrical blackouts before it collided with the bridge&#8217;s support beam and caused the middle section of the 1.6-mile-long bridge to crash into the Patapsco River. Video of the incident shows the Dali&#8217;s lights go out moments before it rams into the support beam. Six men who were working on the bridge at the time fell into the water and died.

The Dali remained stuck in the bridge wreckage until earlier this week when authorities used precision explosive charges to remove part of the bridge that was still on top of the container ship, according to <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/baltimore-bridge-span-removed-ship-freed-precision-blast-rcna152065" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NBC News</a>. Maryland Governor Wes Moore also announced that a channel should finally be open for ships by the end of the month, which would be key to &#8220;fully opening vessel traffic to the port.&#8221;
Days after the collision, the NTSB released a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ntsb-reports-timeline-of-baltimore-bridge-disaster" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> describing the events that led up to the bridge&#8217;s collapse.
“Around 01:26:39 the ship’s pilot made a general VHF [very high frequency] call for tugs in the vicinity of the DALI. MDTA data from around this time indicated the pilot association dispatcher phoned the MDTA duty officer regarding the blackout. Around 1:27:04, the pilot commanded the DALI to drop the port anchor and issued additional steering commands,” the NTSB said. “Around 1:27:25, the pilot issued a radio call over the VHF radio and reported the DALI had lost all power approaching the Key Bridge,” adding that at roughly 1:29 a.m., “the ship’s speed over ground was recorded as just under 7 knots/8 miles per hour. From this moment until approximately 1:29:33, VDR audio recorded sounds consistent with the collision with the Key bridge.”
