The Atlantic published a fascinating <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2025/02/covid-youth-conservative-shift/681705/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">piece</a> yesterday by Derek Thompson. In it, he discusses the radical shift in the voting patterns of young people in the United States.
What he found is that COVID and BLM basically shoved an entire generation of people to the Right. He writes:
<blockquote>For decades, America’s young voters have been deeply—and famously—progressive. In 2008, a youthquake sent Barack Obama to the White House. In 2016, voters ages 18 to 29 broke for Hillary Clinton by 18 points. In 2020, they voted for Joe Biden by 24 points. In 2024, Donald Trump closed most of the gap, losing voters under 30 by a 51–47 margin. In one recent CBS poll, Americans under 30 weren’t just evenly split between the parties. They were even more pro-Trump than Boomers over 65.</blockquote>
So what exactly is happening? Thompson suggests that this is essentially a reaction to government overreach during COVID, that the bizarre institutional failures during COVID — ranging from the idea that proper political credentials brought about riots in the streets and protection from a COVID attack to the idea that kids had to be locked out of schools — shoved an entire generation of young people to the Right and radicalized them.
And this, of course, is true.
This is evidence too that people are incredibly variable and vacillating when it comes to their politics. Exogenous events can shove entire generations of people one way or another.
This has happened several times over the course of my lifetime. I remember after 2001, a brand new security boom prompted people, particularly suburban moms who had traditionally voted Democrat, to suddenly vote Republican.
Then, COVID apparently shoved many young people to the Right. Wokeness shoved many young people to the Right.
This is a good reminder to everyone in politics that while you may think the pendulum will never shift back over to the other side, it absolutely will.

And thus, two points ought to be taken from that.
First, politicians ought to be very careful with their use of political power. That doesn&#8217;t mean they shouldn&#8217;t move fast and break things. It means they should be very careful not to set a trip wire that is going to blow up.
Second, they have to move with alacrity when they get to power; the Left always does, and the Right rarely does. This is one of the differences between MAGA and prior conservative Republican movements.
Prior Republican movements took that first bit of advice — “move cautiously; don&#8217;t break too many things” — but they neglected the fact that if you don&#8217;t break enough things, that if you don&#8217;t move fast enough in breaking up things, you don&#8217;t get enough done and the Left comes back in.
And when the Left gets in power, they move fast and they break things.
Barack Obama was not shy about using his power in 2009-2010 in order to shove forward Obamacare and a vast expansion of the federal government. President Trump is doing precisely the opposite.
On Tuesday, President Trump set about issuing a number of new executive orders. Some of them are incredibly consequential. One of them is just a reinstatement of his stated purpose, which is to create more governmental transparency. He issued an executive order titled Radical Transparency about Wasteful Spending, which <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/02/memorandum-for-the-heads-of-executive-departments-and-agencies-7c05/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reads</a>:
<blockquote>The United States Government spends too much money on programs, contracts, and grants that do not promote the interests of the American people.  For too long, taxpayers have subsidized ideological projects overseas and domestic organizations engaged in actions that undermine the national interest.  The American people have seen their tax dollars used to fund the passion projects of unelected bureaucrats rather than to advance the national interest.  The American people have a right to see how the Federal Government has wasted their hard-earned wages.
I therefore direct the heads of executive departments and agencies (agencies) to take all appropriate actions to make public, to the maximum extent permitted by law and as the heads of agencies deem appropriate to promote the policies of my Administration, the complete details of every terminated program, cancelled contract, terminated grant, or any other discontinued obligation of Federal funds.</blockquote>
Again, this is all part and parcel of the DOGE approach to American government.
As part of that, President Trump also <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/02/ensuring-accountability-for-all-agencies/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">issued</a> an executive order on Tuesday “ensuring accountability for all agencies,” the goal being to re-enshrine the unitary executive theory of the federal government.
In the Constitution, there is no unelected fourth branch of government that is sort of half-run by Congress and half-run by the executive. If Congress delegates power to the executive, it is the job of the executive to perform those powers.
That means if an executive branch agency exists, that executive branch agency is headed by the president of the United States. That was the point of this particular executive order. It states:
<blockquote>Previous administrations have allowed so-called “independent regulatory agencies” to operate with minimal Presidential supervision.  These regulatory agencies currently exercise substantial executive authority without sufficient accountability to the President, and through him, to the American people.  Moreover, these regulatory agencies have been permitted to promulgate significant regulations without review by the President.  
These practices undermine such regulatory agencies’ accountability to the American people and prevent a unified and coherent execution of Federal law.  For the Federal Government to be truly accountable to the American people, officials who wield vast executive power must be supervised and controlled by the people’s elected President. 
Therefore, in order to improve the administration of the executive branch and to increase regulatory officials’ accountability to the American people, it shall be the policy of the executive branch to ensure Presidential supervision and control of the entire executive branch.</blockquote>
This is a restatement of the constitutional principle that the president runs the executive branch. All the pseudo-shocks from Democrats on this particular point stems from their long-standing assumption that an independent agency would be run by Democrats. They always assumed that “career bureaucrat” meant Democrat.
There was, in fact, a deep state. It was permanent political appointees who were supposedly insulated from any Republican president who would take power.
And now, Trump is saying no, that&#8217;s not the way this is going to work.
As part and parcel of that, President Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114027416979768016" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> on Truth Social, “Over the past four years, the Department of Justice has been politicized like never before. Therefore, I have instructed the termination of ALL remaining “Biden Era” U.S. Attorneys. We must “clean house” IMMEDIATELY, and restore confidence. America’s Golden Age must have a fair Justice System &#8211; THAT BEGINS TODAY!”
There&#8217;s a lot of hue and cry over this, but this is not, in fact, a rarity. President Bill Clinton fired 93 U.S. attorneys shortly after taking office in 1993, and when Barack Obama came into office, he cleared out many in the justice system who had been appointed by George W. Bush.
This sort of change-over of career bureaucrats in these particular agencies, including the DOJ, is not a rarity; it’s a regular part of American government.
It&#8217;s only Republicans who are chided about this.
And this time, we don’t give a damn.

Government agencies may be attempting to block President Donald Trump&#8217;s appointees from taking their posts by asking anti-conservative questions in background checks, The Daily Wire has learned.
As part of the background checks political appointees undergo, federal agents often interview a candidate&#8217;s neighbors and associates. One person interviewed about a Trump appointee told The Daily Wire that an FBI agent asked whether the appointee held biases against transgender people as part of the interview.
&#8220;Do you know [the appointee] to hold any biases against people due to race, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity?&#8221; the agent asked, according to the individual, who spoke on condition of anonymity in order to not jeopardize the assessment.
The FBI&#8217;s national press office did not respond to an inquiry about what questions it asks and what would happen if a Trump political appointee said they did harbor certain biases.
In a separate case, a Department of Homeland Security contractor with the firm Peraton asked a Trump appointee&#8217;s associate if the appointee &#8220;has participated in anything that can be considered an insurrection against the U.S. Government,&#8221; a question seemingly meant to identify anyone associated with January 6.
These background checks are being conducted before Trump&#8217;s pick to lead the FBI, Kash Patel, has been confirmed. Mike Davis, who helped oversee the vetting of judicial appointments as a Senate staffer and now runs the conservative Article III Project, told The Daily Wire that Patel should probe the background check process after taking over.
&#8220;When Kash Patel is confirmed as the next FBI director, his team should review the FBI&#8217;s interview questions of potential federal workers to ensure they are not discriminating against Christians, conservatives, and others who do not agree with woke nonsense,&#8221; Davis said.
Trump&#8217;s team initially expressed reservation about his Cabinet nominees undergoing FBI background checks, given career FBI employees&#8217; history of using their power to thwart Trump for political reasons.
Even lower-level appointees could be subject to the whims of agency insiders through the background check process. That would be in keeping with other ways that civil servants have sought to prevent the elected president from staffing and steering the executive branch.
A significant portion of the FBI&#8217;s workforce joined when much of that workforce was devoted to pursuing Trump supporters for crimes like trespassing on January 6. On January 6, 2021, the FBI explicitly chose to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-fbi-dropped-probe-of-pedophile-to-focus-on-january-6-now-hes-accused-of-abusing-10-year-old-boy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">abandon a sting on an apparent child pornographer</a> in Virginia who was messaging with an undercover agent about having sex with a nine-year-old boy, opting instead to focus on prosecuting Trump supporters who stormed the U.S. Capitol. The perpetrator went on to offend again.
The Department of Homeland Security had federal air marshals <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/federal-air-marshals-diverted-from-sensitive-flights-to-follow-january-6-suspects-officials-say" target="_blank" rel="noopener">following people for years</a> who flew to Washington, D.C., on January 6, 2021, even if they did not go to the Capitol and were never charged with a crime.

Gov’t Background Checks For Trump Political Appointees Include Left-Wing Questions

The federal government is out of control and President Trump is working overtime to fix it, but the bureaucrats causing the problem have powerful allies striking back at the president from outside.
The basic problem isn’t just the woke spending at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), though that is a prime example of the central issue.
The problem is that unelected bureaucrats have real power to determine policy, and they consider themselves intellectually and morally superior to the people and their elected representatives. This mentality explains why 64% of Washington, D.C.,-based bureaucrats who voted for Kamala Harris in November say they won’t follow a lawful Trump order if they consider it bad policy.
This should also remind Americans of how aggressively certain actors within the executive branch opposed Trump during his first term. Agents within the government helped prop up the conspiracy theory that Trump was a Russian agent, and a news outlet partially funded by USAID helped launch the first Trump impeachment. At least one bureaucrat openly described himself as “<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/05/opinion/trump-white-house-anonymous-resistance.html">part of the resistance</a> inside the Trump administration.”  
The rot runs deep, and rooting it out won’t be easy. To make matters worse, the deep state has allies outside the government who are working hard to prevent Trump from changing the system.
<h3>The Freak Out</h3>
Democrats have taken to the streets of Washington, D.C., to protest Trump’s restructuring of the federal government, acting as though cutting waste and abuse from the bureaucracy amounted to a national crisis.
“People need to know how serious this is,” Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) whose congressional district is home to more than 70,000 federal workers, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/power-democratic-lawmakers-take-streets-rally-opposition-trump-rcna190842">said at a recent protest</a>. “You tear down the federal government, you also tear down our whole society. If you eliminate one of the three branches of government, you can’t run a country.”
Trump and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) aren’t tearing down the entire government, and they’re not even eliminating one of the three branches. Rather, they’re making the administrative state — effectively a fourth, extra-constitutional branch of government — accountable to the people’s elected president. 
The Democrats and their allies don’t like it because it involves rooting the woke activism out of the entrenched bureaucracy. 
For example, USAID had been funding Marxist “equity,” transgender activism, and climate alarmism, the woke ideologies voters rejected in November. USAID had partnered with the Open Society Foundations, the massive funding apparatus of Hungarian-American billionaire George Soros and his son Alex. 
In one particularly egregious example, <a href="https://www.dailysignal.com/2025/02/07/usaid-george-soros-foundation-bankrolled-news-outlet-spurred-first-trump-impeachment/">USAID and Open Society funded</a> the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project. This news outlet attacked conservatives for criticizing Soros and released the report that spurred the first Trump impeachment in 2019.
Conservatives should be familiar with George and Alex Soros. Soros and his son have bankrolled almost every leftist cause you’ve ever heard of, and the Open Society Foundations played a major role in propping up the leftist groups that called the shots in the Biden administration.

Scratch the surface of any Biden policy, and you’re likely to find activists with the Center for American Progress, the Human Rights Campaign, or the Natural Resources Defense Council. America’s largest unions, such as the AFL-CIO and the Service Employees Industrial Union, also had tremendous access and influence in the administration.
Now, those same groups are gearing up to defend the deep state, and they’re doing more than just picketing outside USAID.

<h3>Anti-DOGE Lawsuits</h3>
Many activist groups have sued to block DOGE and SpaceX founder Elon Musk from accessing federal data.
The AFL-CIO; the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees; and the SEIU — three of the major unions that helped fund the Woketopus and influenced policy in the Biden administration — <a href="https://www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/federal-unions-sue-doge-over-department-of-labor-data-access/">joined other unions in suing</a> DOGE and the Department of Labor to prevent DOGE from accessing the department’s data. A federal judge temporarily blocked DOGE from accessing the data. 
“DOGE seeks to gain access to sensitive systems before courts can stop them, dismantle agencies before Congress can assert its prerogatives in the federal budget, and intimidate and threaten employees who stand in their way,” the lawsuit states. “The results have already been catastrophic.” 
Democracy Forward is representing the unions <a href="https://www.dailysignal.com/2025/01/29/who-are-nonprofits-sued-block-trumps-federal-funding-freeze/">in the lawsuit</a>. Marc Elias, the left-leaning election lawyer who tried to reverse the results of the 2024 U.S. Senate election in Pennsylvania, serves on the board of this group.
<a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.dcd.277055/gov.uscourts.dcd.277055.1.0.pdf">The SEIU also sued</a> Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, aiming to block Treasury from sharing data with DOGE. A federal judge <a href="https://fedscoop.com/judge-blocks-treasury-payments-systems-from-doge/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">limited DOGE employees’ access</a> to the data in a ruling Thursday. Nineteen Democratic attorneys general, not to be left out, filed a similar case Friday, and a judge <a href="https://apnews.com/article/elon-musk-doge-lawsuit-attorneys-general-5733f8985e4cf7ad5b233fddefef4d01" target="_blank" rel="noopener">issued a preliminary injunction</a> blocking DOGE access Saturday.
<h3>Blocking Key Reforms</h3>
In addition to DOGE, Trump has directed key reforms to the administrative state that would make the bureaucracy more accountable to the people’s elected president. Schedule F, for instance, creates a new classification of federal employee that makes bureaucrats who make policy easier to fire. 
The Woketopus has taken aim at Schedule F. 
Governing for Impact, a shadowy activist group that advised top Biden administration bureaucrats after getting launched through the dark money network established by Arabella Advisors, released a memo outlining what it calls the “<a href="https://governingforimpact.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Legal-Vulnerabilities-of-Schedule-F-2.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Legal Vulnerabilities of Schedule F</a>.” This document appears to be a roadmap to inspire lawsuits against the reform.
On Jan. 29, the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, one of America’s largest unions and an arm of the Woketopus, teamed up with the American Federation of Government Employees — which represents 800,000 federal employees — to sue President Trump and the Office of Personnel Management. The same left-leaning law firm that <a href="https://www.dailysignal.com/2025/01/29/who-are-nonprofits-sued-block-trumps-federal-funding-freeze/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">represented left-leaning nonprofits</a> in attempting to block Trump’s funding freeze is representing AFSCME and AFGE.
AFSCME and AFGE claim that Trump’s executive orders aim to “politicize the civil service,” but these orders aim to prevent woke bureaucrats from undermining the president’s ability to deliver on his promises to the American people.
<h3>&#8216;Deferred Resignation&#8217;</h3>
President Trump has reversed policies that allow federal employees to work remotely. He has required all staff to return to work, but he also gave them an offramp should they refuse to return to the office. The Office of Management and Budget has offered to pay federal employees through the end of the year if they resign before Feb. 6.
The AFSCME and a few other unions filed a lawsuit to block President Trump’s offer. The lawsuit asks the court to issue a stay to block the deferred resignation practice. On Feb. 6, a federal judge <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/judge-request-block-trumps-federal-government-employee-buyout/story?id=118535508" target="_blank" rel="noopener">extended the deadline</a> through Feb. 10.
As of Feb. 14, more than 75,000 employees have indicated they will resign, <a href="https://www.newsnationnow.com/politics/75000-federal-workers-trump-buyout/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to News Nation</a>. That represents over 3% of the workforce.
<h3>Constitutional Acid</h3>
Democrats and the Woketopus may act as though Trump’s reforms are the end of the world, but the president’s acts arguably represent a long-overdue attempt to bring a metastasized administrative state to heel.
As the head of the executive branch, Trump should have the ability to reform the federal government, and Congress should aid him in this task. The president has taken strong steps in the right direction, but the Woketopus’ response shows that the path ahead will not be easy.
The deep state isn’t just a threat to Trump — it’s an acid corroding the constitutional structure of our government. Americans cannot afford to forget just how corrupt the bureaucracy is, and we should support Trump’s goal of rooting out the deep state.

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) reportedly offered buyouts to its entire workforce on Tuesday in an effort to restructure the agency and confront the top threats facing the U.S.
The Wall Street Journal <a href="https://www.wsj.com/politics/national-security/the-cia-is-about-to-get-a-trump-makeover-16fc0cbf">reported</a> that employees were offered eight months of pay and benefits if they quit their jobs, but overall interest among those who work at the CIA appeared to be low.
CIA Director John Ratcliffe&#8217;s officer said that the agency was also temporarily freezing the hiring of applicants who had been given conditional offers.
The report added that President Donald Trump&#8217;s top goals for the agency revolved around trade wars, undermining communist China, and destroying the Mexican drug cartels.
The offers were essentially a signal to those working in the U.S. government that if they oppose Trump, they should leave the agency and work elsewhere.
Ratcliffe reportedly urged the White House to make the offers to the CIA because he believes it is a necessary first step for creating &#8220;a more aggressive spy agency.&#8221;
In his confirmation hearing last month before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Ratcliffe said that the U.S.&#8217;s current threat environment was &#8220;the most challenging&#8221; in history.
&#8220;The Chinese Communist Party remains committed to dominating the world economically, technologically, and militarily,&#8221; Ratcliffe said. &#8220;Transnational criminal organizations are flooding American communities with violence and deadly narcotics.&#8221;
&#8220;The Russia-Ukraine War wages on, spreading devastation and increasing the risk of the United States being pulled into conflict with a nuclear power,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;The Iranian regime and its terrorist proxies continue to export mayhem across the Middle East, and Iran is closer to nuclear breakout than ever before.&#8221;
&#8220;North Korea remains a destabilizing force,&#8221; he added. &#8220;Increasing coordination among America’s rivals and adversaries threatens to compound the threats they each pose individually. And numerous terrorist groups and other non-state actors – some of which have even crossed our southern border – still pose a persistent threat to our people and our homeland.&#8221;

The federal government’s central computer programming office was one of the most defiantly left-wing units in all of government, but an Elon Musk lieutenant has taken the reins, and the unit — which engaged in far-left self-indulgence throughout the first Trump administration — is coming to heel.
Staff members have deleted code such as an “inclusion bot” that monitored employees’ messages to chide them for using “racist” terms like “peanut gallery,” a Daily Wire review of code changes showed. Also deleted was a “psychological safety” page warning web developers of the many ways they could be “triggered” while working their high-paid, white-collar jobs.
The General Services Administration’s (GSA) Technology Transformation Service (TTS), and its major component 18F, were once so hijacked by left-wing extremism that they risked the security of a million Americans by falsifying information in the belief that a legally-required security feature was racist, according to a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/federal-agency-focused-on-leftist-politics-and-pronouns-as-gross-mismanagement-put-cybersecurity-at-risk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">government audit</a>.
TTS/18F is a sister group of the U.S. Digital Service, a White House office that was <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/establishing-and-implementing-the-presidents-department-of-government-efficiency/#:~:text=The%20United%20States%20Digital%20Service%20is%20hereby%20publicly%20renamed%20as,Executive%20Office%20of%20the%20President.">repurposed</a> as Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency. On January 24, GSA announced that <a href="https://www.gsa.gov/about-us/newsroom/news-releases/gsa-announces-new-commissioners-tts-director-and-general-counsel-01242025">Thomas Shedd</a>, previously an engineer for Musk&#8217;s Tesla, was taking over TTS. Musk is expected to turn his personal focus to GSA, which handles government-wide functions such as real estate, soon.
<a href="https://x.com/18F">18F’s logo on X</a> still dedicates more space to the transgender flag than to its own name. But it tracks its code publicly on Github, and logs show the swift deletion of an improbable portion of its code dedicated not to its actual mission, but to flamboyant displays of internal virtue-signaling.

It turned off its <a href="https://github.com/18F/charlie/blob/9391f2b739b47ba7c8d98d574f983e78b7b5a036/InclusionBot.md">&#8220;inclusion bot,&#8221;</a> which spied on workers&#8217; Slack messages to chide them for using phrases like &#8220;drop-dead date&#8221; (lecture: &#8220;can trigger&#8221;), &#8220;ninja&#8221; (&#8220;We want to show respect towards cultural traditions&#8221;), &#8220;lame&#8221; (&#8220;arose as a derogatory reference to people with disabilities&#8221;), &#8220;like crack&#8221; (&#8220;discriminatory policies that target Black people&#8221;), &#8220;no problemo&#8221; (&#8220;arose as a way of devaluing Spanish in favor of an &#8216;English-only&#8217; United States&#8221;), and &#8220;guys&#8221; (&#8220;can make people who do not identify as &#8216;guys&#8217; feel excluded&#8221;).

It deleted a lengthy section of its employee handbook describing how when talking at a meeting, speakers should first describe their appearance so any <a href="https://github.com/18F/handbook/commit/10710c69a3d23d16b28b8da71f7e5a667ec4594c">blind listeners would know if there was sufficient racial diversity</a>.
The document included examples like, &#8220;Greetings. I’m Madison, my pronouns are she/they and I’m a middle-aged white woman with an androgynous appearance&#8221; and &#8220;I’m a brown-skinned black woman with medium length kinky hair.&#8221;

It removed a page that said employees should <a href="https://github.com/18F/handbook/commit/b21478daf0f94e57df6466d109708534147c46ec">only participate</a> in events where &#8220;there are no all white or all male panels,&#8221; where &#8220;there is a code of conduct with an incident response plan,&#8221; and where &#8220;participants have a place to share their pronouns.&#8221;
It got rid of a rule that emojis must be &#8220;in line with our values of diversity, equity, and inclusion,&#8221; and &#8220;consent&#8221; provided if they depicted a person.
It changed linked text to obscure (but did not remove) a page showing how “diversity” actually meant <a href="https://github.com/18F/handbook/blob/main/pages/training-and-development/working-groups-and-guilds-101.md" target="_blank" rel="noopener">racially segregated workgroups</a> called &#8220;affinity groups.&#8221;.

The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/chat-records-reveal-epic-meltdown-in-federal-agency-after-trump-win" target="_blank" rel="noopener">obtained records</a> showing that after Trump won election in 2016, TTS hosted &#8220;the most partisan meeting [one had] ever attended in government.&#8221; Employees said Trump&#8217;s victory made them fear for their &#8220;safety,&#8221; and their morals compelled them to &#8220;speak[] truth to power.&#8221;
Employees said they should be able to keep getting paid while refusing to implement policies they didn&#8217;t personally agree with. Then-TTS Director Dave Zvenyach initially told them that was inappropriate, but after employees browbeat him for being white, he recanted and said his initial guidance must have sounded &#8220;totally ridiculous.&#8221;
Employee Yoz Grahame (“he/him”) wrote, “It falls to all of us in the organisation, but most of all to those of us who feel safer than others, to uphold our diversity practices, continually improve them, and spread them throughout government.” Years of scandal ensued.
Only President Trump&#8217;s second term in office has caused them to surrender.

‘Triggered’ No More: Federal Tech Arm Deletes ‘Inclusion Bot’ After Musk Takeover

The White House anticipates that between 5 and 10 percent of federal employees will take buyouts, leading to a savings of $100 billion annually, it said in a memo to Republican allies obtained by The Daily Wire.
The Trump administration on Tuesday offered <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fork-in-the-road-trump-makes-offer-for-millions-of-federal-workers-to-resign">deferred resignations</a>, allowing employees to get paid through September if they decide to leave by February 6.
The memo said the purpose of the offer was &#8220;to make sure that all federal workers are on board with the new administration’s plan to have federal employees in office.&#8221; Citing a Daily Wire report, it said &#8220;We’re five years past COVID and just <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/only-6-of-feds-work-from-an-office-full-time-and-some-arent-working-at-all-audit-finds" target="_blank" rel="noopener">6 percent</a> of federal employees work full-time in office. That is unacceptable.&#8221;
The offer sent to all employees described the deferred resignation as a way for employees who are accustomed to working from home and do not want to change their routine to be exempted from a return-to-the-office mandate. It said they could continue in some form of remote job, or might be placed on leave, until September 30.
But the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) later sweetened the offer to be more like a straight buyout, publishing a <a href="https://www.opm.gov/fork/faq" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FAQ</a> that said people who took the deal would not be expected to do any work, except in rare cases.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained the justification for the buyout in a statement:
American taxpayers pay for the salaries of federal government employees, and therefore deserve employees working on their behalf who actually show up to work in our wonderful federal buildings, also paid for by taxpayers. If they don’t want to work in the office and contribute to making America great again, then they are free to choose a different line of work, and the Trump Administration will provide a very generous payout of 8 months.
The offer gives federal employees ample time to find a new job in the private sector, assuming they have marketable skills. It avoids impediments to firing federal employees, like <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-republicans-target-federal-unions-after-11th-hour-deals-tie-trumps-hands-on-remote-work" target="_blank" rel="noopener">union contracts</a> and appeals. It also gives an easy and appealing out to federal employees who object to working for President Donald Trump, leaving him with a workforce less likely to subvert his initiatives.
The offer to employees, titled &#8220;<a href="https://www.opm.gov/fork">Fork in the Road</a>,&#8221; noted that there is no certainty that those who don&#8217;t choose the buyout will remain employed.
&#8220;If you choose to remain in your current position, we thank you for your renewed focus on serving the American people to the best of your abilities and look forward to working together as part of an improved federal workforce. At this time, we cannot give you full assurance regarding the certainty of your position or agency but should your position be eliminated you will be treated with dignity and will be afforded the protections in place for such positions,&#8221; it said.

White House Expects 5-10% Of Employees Will Accept Buyouts, Saving $100 Billion

A woman who served as an official in Joe Biden&#8217;s White House and on Kamala Harris&#8217;s transition team, whom bureaucrats tried to hide in the Department of Labor&#8217;s non-political workforce after the election, has been terminated after The Daily Wire exposed her scheme.
“Elizabeth Peña was terminated, effective today. The Administration is actively working to ensure no other political operatives from the Biden-Harris administration were secretly burrowed into the government,” an individual with direct knowledge of staffing decisions told The Daily Wire.
The firing suggests the Trump team is hitting the ground running with attention to detail when it comes to the federal workforce, prepared to detect and respond to tricks and evasion that at times thwarted the president&#8217;s administration in his first term.
There are strict rules around political appointees converting to career employees to stay in the government after their president&#8217;s term ends, designed to prevent the subversion of the new administration. Conversions must be approved by the Office of Personnel Management and reported to Congress.
But between the election and Inauguration Day, the Biden Department of Labor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/exclusive-biden-admin-uses-loophole-to-put-kamala-transition-aide-in-trump-workforce">skirted that process</a> by creating a three-year position and appointing Peña to it, The Daily Wire revealed on January 15. It contended that because it wasn&#8217;t a permanent position, the rules didn&#8217;t apply, even though that would place her in the workforce for the majority of Trump&#8217;s term.
Peña had been a Biden political appointee to the Labor Department before leaving to work for the Harris transition team, which would have positioned her for a top political slot had Harris won the presidency. Instead, she was left unemployed — but in between Harris&#8217; election loss and Trump&#8217;s inauguration, the Labor Department tried to sneak her into a non-political role.
The maneuver was especially jarring because Peña&#8217;s whole career involved strategically placing political operatives into roles. According to her LinkedIn, she previously worked for the Biden White House&#8217;s Presidential Personnel Office, the nerve center for recruiting and dispatching political operatives across the government. Before that, she worked for the Joe Biden presidential transition team, which prepares lists of political operatives to install in key roles to take over the government.
Prior to that, she worked for Beto O’Rourke’s presidential campaign, where she “authored over 500 vetting reports analyzing employees.”
Democrats maintain that Trump&#8217;s concern that a &#8220;deep state&#8221; has attempted to subvert him is a conspiracy theory, but the move only seemed to corroborate those suspicions.
In a LinkedIn post announcing her new position on January 15, Peña said she planned to use her new job working for Trump&#8217;s Labor Department to promote “equity,” a left-wing policy opposed by the incoming president.
“I’m thrilled to announce that I have returned to the Bureau of International Labor Affairs (ILAB) as an International Relations Officer! This new role marks a continuation of my journey to protect and promote labor rights globally. Over the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of working on issues that matter deeply to me and at ILAB, I look forward to collaborating with partners at home and abroad to uphold the principles of dignity, equity, and justice in the workplace,” she wrote.
The Biden administration also lauded Peña as a DEI hire, quoting her on its website that &#8220;My Latina/Hispanic identity shapes my work by providing me with the core values that are embedded in me, like a strong work ethic, compassion, and resilience.&#8221;
Although the now-aborted &#8220;non-political&#8221; job had an end date in three years, it carried a salary of up to $153,354, and a Labor Department spokesperson under the Biden administration said she would be able to apply for a permanent job then.
He declined to say whether the job was created especially for her, but a Daily Wire review of job listings found that hers was the only position of its type to use a &#8220;term&#8221; rather than permanent status, and a similar job with the permanent status was canceled the same month the term job was advertised.
In a post to LinkedIn after publication of this article, Peña confirmed that she was terminated and blamed coverage in The Daily Wire.
&#8220;Yesterday, I was terminated from my position at the Department of Labor,&#8221; she wrote. &#8220;This decision appears to have been influenced by an article published in a conservative outlet, which alleged that I had &#8216;burrowed&#8217; into the position. The article insinuated that the role was simply handed to me. Let me be clear: nothing in my life has ever been handed to me.&#8221;
&#8220;I am both surprised and, in some ways, flattered that my work would draw such attention and concern from the current administration,&#8221; the post said.
Peña also said that she didn&#8217;t believe she was hired due to DEI, but &#8220;would take pride&#8221; in it if that was the case.
&#8220;The article also misrepresented comments I previously made about my identity as a Latina during Hispanic heritage month, claiming I was a &#8216;diversity, equity, and inclusion&#8217; hire. This statement was taken out of context. But even if I had been hired as part of DEI efforts, I would take pride in that,&#8221; she wrote. &#8220;While this chapter may have closed, it only strengthens my resolve to continue advocating for a brighter, more inclusive future for this country.&#8221; 
There are signs that the vigilance over Peña may also be present when it comes to enforcing Trump&#8217;s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-admin-to-put-all-federal-dei-officials-on-leave-by-end-of-day-tomorrow" target="_blank" rel="noopener">executive order abolishing DEI roles</a>, where bureaucrats may try to change or obscure their titles to avoid the axe.
A memo sent to all employees of most federal agencies on Wednesday said DEI positions would abolished because they &#8220;divide Americans by race, waste taxpayer dollars, and result in shameful discrimination,&#8221; and also that &#8220;We are aware of efforts by some in government to disguise these programs by using coded or imprecise language.&#8221;
It said employees with knowledge of such maneuvers had 10 days to come forward without facing repercussions.

Labor Department Fires Kamala Aide Exposed By The Daily Wire For ‘Burrowing’ In Trump Workforce

In addition to the thousands of political appointees Donald Trump will place in the government, there are 300 Senior Executive Service jobs that the Biden administration was in the process of filling, which Trump will now be able to fill, a Daily Wire review of government job ads found.
The SES, as it is known, is what many mean when they think of the “deep state.” They are career civil servants who are paid over $200,000 a year, and are often involved in high-level policy, yet are considered permanent government employees whose term does not end with a president. They are difficult to fire, typically Democrats, and have their own lobbying organization.
But the SES could be a valuable resource for Trump, giving him hundreds of extra high-level jobs to fill, beyond the approximately 3,000 political appointees who comprise a small fraction of the federal workforce. The SES level is a crucial layer that could either cause Trump’s policies to filter from executive suites to the rank-and-file, or isolate political appointees and obstruct their efforts.
If Trump exerts his influence on the hiring of these employees, it could have a lasting effect on the government that outlives his presidency. On his first day in office, he signaled his intent to do just that, signing an executive order called &#8220;<a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/restoring-accountability-for-career-senior-executives/">Restoring Accountability for Career Senior Executives</a>.&#8221;
&#8220;SES officials have enormous influence over the functioning of the Federal Government,&#8221; it said. &#8220;Because SES officials wield significant governmental authority, they must serve at the pleasure of the President.&#8221; It said Executive Resource Boards, which evaluate resumes and make hiring recommendations for SES jobs, should be reconstituted with majority political appointees. Another executive order issued a hiring freeze to prevent the bureaucracy from racing to fill the jobs without Trump&#8217;s input.
But the fact that 300 jobs are currently vacant gives the Trump team the ability to fill them quickly and supercharge the administration&#8217;s early efforts.
They include top HR roles, a position that could have a cascading effect, ensuring that other hires won’t obstruct the administration. (Trump last week requested the resignation of the State Department’s HR chief, and she <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/career-state-department-hr-official-retires-following-trumps-demand-for-resignations" target="_blank" rel="noopener">retired</a>, despite being a career employee.) A career State Department official announced her retirement hours after President-elect Donald Trump asked for her resignation and those of two other officials, The Daily Wire has learned.
Marcia Bernicat, the director-general of the U.S. Foreign Service and director of global talent, who has held a top role for many years, sent a farewell message on Thursday announcing her retirement, a source who saw the message said. Bernicat is essentially the top HR person in charge of shaping the State Department’s workforce. She was photographed Friday looking grim as Secretary of State Antony Blinken marked the end of his tenure.
<a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/trump-team-asks-three-us-senior-career-diplomats-resign-sources-say-2025-01-15/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Reuters</a> reported on Wednesday that Trump asked Bernicat, Dereck Hogan, and Alaina Teplitz to resign — an unusual move, since they are career employees, not political appointees. However, the three occupy key roles that, if held by people who oppose Trump’s mission, could have a cascading effect that neutralizes the commander-in-chief’s ability to control the government agency.

Hogan is the department’s executive secretary, which “manages the flow of information between department bureaus and with the White House,” Reuters said. Teplitz has been with the department for three decades and is Assistant Secretary.
Bernicat&#8217;s retirement signals that Trump’s team is heading into its second term with knowledge of the “deep state” actors that it believes are obstructing it, and that some of those are willing to accept defeat and bow out, even before Trump takes office.
The State Department has been notorious for harboring left-wing civil servants, and the fact that even high-level people are not replaceable by incoming administrations highlights Trump’s plan for a “Schedule F,” which would reclassify a larger number of employees involved in policy so they could be more easily removed by a president.
&#8220;It is entirely appropriate for the transition to seek officials who share President Trump&#8217;s vision for putting our nation and America&#8217;s working men and women first. We have a lot of failures to fix and that requires a committed team focused on the same goals,” Trump’s transition team told Reuters.
A State Department spokesman did not return a request from The Daily Wire asking to confirm Bernicat’s retirement and whether the other two have made a decision.

Career State Department HR Official Retires Following Trump’s Demand For Resignations

A Democrat operative who worked for the Biden White House personnel office, as a political appointee to the Department of Labor, and for the Kamala Harris transition team, has been hired by the Department of Labor in a role that will continue in the Trump administration using a loophole, The Daily Wire has learned.
Elizabeth Peña was a Biden political appointee to the Labor Department&#8217;s Bureau of International Labor Affairs, where she worked from October 2021 to October 2024, first as a Special Assistant and then as Policy Advisor, according to her LinkedIn.
From October to December 2024, she served as senior manager of vetting for the Harris transition team. Then in January, she returned to the Labor Department — this time as International Relations Officer, not a political appointee.
In a LinkedIn post announcing her new position on Monday, she said she planned to use it to promote “equity,” a left-wing policy opposed by the incoming president.
“I’m thrilled to announce that I have returned to the Bureau of International Labor Affairs (ILAB) as an International Relations Officer! This new role marks a continuation of my journey to protect and promote labor rights globally. Over the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of working on issues that matter deeply to me and at ILAB, I look forward to collaborating with partners at home and abroad to uphold the principles of dignity, equity, and justice in the workplace,” she wrote.
Peña knows the importance of having people with the right political leanings in the right jobs — and the rules around it — because placing Democrats in key posts has been a large part of her career in politics. From September 2020 to January 2021, she worked on the Biden transition team as it selected Democrats to fill top jobs. From January to September 2021, she worked in the White House’s influential Presidential Personnel Office, which does the same thing.
Prior to that, she worked for Beto O’Rourke’s presidential campaign, where she “authored over 500 vetting reports analyzing employees,” according to her <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/elizabeth-pe%C3%B1a-jd/details/experience/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LinkedIn</a>.

Federal ethics rules frown on “burrowing,” as the effort to embed political appointees into the next administration is known. According to a report from the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service, a political appointee can only be converted to a permanent position with special permission from the Office of Personnel Management.
The Congressional Research Service said that’s because of concerns about whether the person was hired because they were close to top leaders instead of being the best-qualified, that it takes a job away from an existing civil servant who may have wanted a promotion, and “that the individual who is converted to a career position may seek to undermine the work of the new Administration.” All of that, the Congressional Research Service says, “may increase the tension between political and career staff.”
Democrats have lashed out at Trump’s suggestion that government employees are often liberals who may seek to thwart him — a suggestion that the Biden PPO alum’s appointment makes harder to dispute.
Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA), the incoming ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, previously condemned the idea of political operatives moving into the federal workforce, <a href="https://connolly.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=4747">saying</a> he was “committed to protecting the civil service from partisan attacks and attempts to replace qualified experts with political loyalists.”

The Labor Department appears to have used a loophole to avoid Peña showing up on a list of “burrowed” employees, which under the law must be furnished to Congress. A Labor Department spokesperson told The Daily Wire “Peña was hired as a Term employee at the Bureau of International Labor Affairs. A Term employee is a time-limited position that does not confer career status, distinguishing it from both political appointee roles and permanent career positions.”
An International Relations Officer job with “term” status was <a href="https://www.usajobs.gov/job/820877000" target="_blank" rel="noopener">posted</a> from November 26 through December 3. It showed a salary of $117,962 to $153,354 and a term of three years, meaning she would serve for the bulk of the Trump administration.
Also in November, a permanent International Relations Officer job was posted, then <a href="https://www.usajobs.gov/job/819155500" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cancelled</a>. The Labor Department did not answer a question about whether the term-limited job was created for Peña and displaced a standard permanent position. A Daily Wire review of federal job ads showed that the bureau listed International Relations Officer jobs more than 80 times since 2019, and none of them were “term” jobs.
The job ad tracks closely with Peña’s resume, saying the successful applicant must have experience “developing labor-related policy or program recommendations for senior leadership” and speak Spanish.
The Labor Department spokesperson indicated that the “term” classification sidestepped typical anti-burrowing procedures, saying “If Ms. Peña applies for and is selected to transition into a career position in the future&#8230; her application will undergo the Office of Personnel Management&#8217;s (OPM) review process required for all former political appointees.”
The Biden administration has taken other personnel measures that could make it more difficult for Trump to identify and remove partisan operatives from the workforce. That includes hiring permanent employees to work on DEI initiatives — roles Trump is likely to abolish. Federal agencies may change their titles in an attempt to hide the target.
A source close to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said that the agency has taken steps to change the title of its Chief Equity Officer, Dia D. Harris, to Senior Adviser. HHS did not return a request for comment.
The Chief Equity Officer job is not listed in the Plum Book, implying it is a career position. Yet employees originally hired to do DEI are likely partisan in ways that directly contradict Trump’s agenda, and are likely to remain that way regardless of title.
Harris’s LinkedIn says “I allow, permit, &amp; encourage U 2 b as authentic as possible… I authentically live as an Unapologetically Blackity Black Black Man!”
As Chief Equity Officer “I direct the implementation of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) initiatives, assist in the establishment of DEIA goals, and execute agency-wide action plans,” his LinkedIn says, adding that he was previously a self-employed “Inclusion Equality &amp; Diversity Consultant.”

Debanking — when a bank decides they do not want you as a customer — has become a hot topic amid a flurry of accusations from people and companies who say they were kicked out of their banks over their politics.
The apparent targets of debanking tend to be prominent people on the Right and cryptocurrency companies, which tend to lean right and are under scrutiny from regulators. Former First Lady Melania Trump said in her recently published memoir that both she and her son Barron were refused bank accounts after January 6.
“I was shocked and dismayed to learn that my long-time bank decided to terminate my account and deny my son the opportunity to open a new one,” Trump <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/10/09/us-news/barron-trump-was-denied-bank-account-due-to-cancel-mob-mom-melania-claims/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>.
She blamed the “venom of cancel culture” and said she had “serious concerns about civil rights violations.”

Last month, conservative author Dinesh D&#8217;Souza claimed he was kicked out of Chase Bank without explanation.
&#8220;Walked in one day to discover they had closed my account,&#8221; D&#8217;Souza <a href="https://x.com/DineshDSouza/status/1862611334002544987" target="_blank" rel="noopener">posted</a> on X. &#8220;The local branch couldn’t understand it since I was a good and known customer. They said the order came from the top with no explanation given or even available!&#8221;
When a person or company is debanked, they are blocked from having a bank account at one or multiple banks, often with little explanation. Sometimes they are blocked from other financial services, such as making credit card transactions or using payroll platforms. If they cannot find another bank, they may be forced to rely on alternatives, like check cashing services with high fees and interest.

Meanwhile, debanking hurts their reputation.
Critics <a href="https://medium.com/@nic__carter/marc-andreessen-and-the-cfpb-debunking-the-debanking-debunkers-33e934442647" target="_blank" rel="noopener">note</a> that debanking resembles Big Tech&#8217;s censorship at the behest of the government <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/facebook-docs-reveal-fbi-agent-made-completely-false-congressional-statements-involving-hunter-biden-laptop-jordan-says" target="_blank" rel="noopener">during</a> recent presidential elections.
Marc Andreessen, the tech billionaire founder of venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, which invests in dozens of crypto companies, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ye8MOfxD5nU" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spoke</a> in depth about debanking last month on Joe Rogan&#8217;s podcast. Andreessen said the Biden administration has used debanking to target its political opponents and crypto company founders.
&#8220;We&#8217;ve had like 30 founders debanked in the last four years,&#8221; he told Rogan. &#8220;It&#8217;s been a big recurring pattern. This is one of the reasons why we ended up supporting Trump. We just can&#8217;t live in this world. We can&#8217;t live in a world where somebody starts a company that&#8217;s a completely legal thing and then they literally get sanctioned and embargoed by the United States government.&#8221;
The Biden administration&#8217;s targeting is an expansion of the Obama administration&#8217;s debanking of certain legal businesses, including gambling, marijuana, prostitution, and gun shops, <a href="https://www.cei.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Iain-Murray-Operation-Choke-Point.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">under</a> a program called Operation Choke Point, Andreessen said.
&#8220;This administration extended that concept to apply it to tech founders, crypto founders, and just generally political opponents. So that&#8217;s been super pernicious,&#8221; Andreessen said.
Andreessen said that while the First Amendment protects speech, there is no constitutional amendment saying the government cannot debank you, so the government pressures private banks to do so. The banks comply because they rely on the government to exist, he <a href="https://x.com/pmarca/status/1862683729292083551" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.
&#8220;The government gets to say, &#8216;we didn&#8217;t do it,'&#8221; he said, and this system &#8220;lets bureaucrats do to American citizens the same thing we do to Iran, just kick you out of the financial system.&#8221;
&#8220;It&#8217;s just raw administrative power,&#8221; Andreessen said.
After Andreessen&#8217;s interview, a string of crypto founders <a href="https://x.com/davidmarcus/status/1862654506774810641" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spoke</a> out <a href="https://x.com/sidkal/status/1862117529667199033" target="_blank" rel="noopener">about</a> their experiences being debanked.
Elon Musk, who himself recently <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/shamelessly-breaking-the-law-elon-musk-blasts-california-officials-denying-spacex-launches" target="_blank" rel="noopener">faced</a> political discrimination against his SpaceX rocket launches by a California regulator, also spoke out and <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1862640443789357487" target="_blank" rel="noopener">called</a> for it to be a federal crime to debank political enemies. Musk <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1862633099906937251" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> debanking shows &#8220;just how evil the government has been.&#8221;
As far as which regulators are involved, critics mainly point the finger at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, but they also <a href="https://a16zcrypto.com/posts/article/debanking-explained/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">take</a> aim at the Department of Justice, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the Federal Reserve Board, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Earlier this month, the crypto industry finally uncovered what it says is hard proof that federal regulators have been targeting them.
Documents obtained by the crypto platform Coinbase during a court fight <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/policy/2024/12/05/u-s-regulator-told-banks-to-lay-off-crypto-letters-obtained-by-coinbase-reveal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">showed</a> that in 2022, crypto companies saw their banking activity blocked at a large number of banks by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
&#8220;We respectfully ask that you pause all crypto asset-related activity,&#8221; the banking regulator wrote to banks in one message.
Advocates for cracking down on crypto <a href="https://a16zcrypto.com/posts/article/debanking-explained/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">say</a> they aim to prevent risky businesses from doing business.
Last year, the White House cited crypto as it <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/nec/briefing-room/2023/01/27/the-administrations-roadmap-to-mitigate-cryptocurrencies-risks/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">encouraged</a> banks to separate “risky digital assets from the banking system.” This is also a common cry <a href="https://x.com/SenWarren/status/1773805978762322376" target="_blank" rel="noopener">from</a> Sen. Elizabeth Warren, (D-MA) who received backlash for <a href="https://news.bitcoin.com/elizabeth-warren-explains-her-anti-crypto-army-stance-waves-of-democrats-oppose-her-bitcoin-criticism/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">vowing</a> to mobilize an &#8220;anti-crypto army.&#8221;
However, the crypto world is optimistic about the next few years.
President-elect Donald Trump has promised to make the United States the “crypto capital of the planet,” and he acknowledged the ire around debanking during his campaign.
“They target your banks. They choke off your financial services,” he told a Bitcoin conference in Nashville in July.
Earlier this month, Trump appointed venture capitalist David Sacks the White House AI and Crypto Czar. Sacks previously <a href="https://www.thefp.com/p/how-big-tech-is-strangling-your-freedom" target="_blank" rel="noopener">criticized</a> PayPal, where he was product manager, for its 2017 <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/paypal-suspends-dozens-of-racist-groups-sites-altright-com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ban</a> on what it deemed right-wing extremists.
Conservatives have expressed other concerns about banks allegedly targeting them as well.
Although not debanking exactly, after the January 6 Capitol riot, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network instructed banks to comb through customer transactions for “suspicious charges,” which included words like “MAGA” and “Trump” as well as guns and religious texts.
Under a new Trump administration, conservatives hope regulators will be more reluctant to target them through the banking system, and they may be in luck.
