Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) called on New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul to pardon former President Donald Trump following his conviction in the Manhattan hush-money trial.
Phillips, who ran for president in the Democratic primary and was blown out by President Joe Biden, argued that Trump&#8217;s guilty verdict will only energize the Republican candidate&#8217;s base ahead of the 2024 election. Trump was convicted on Thursday of 34 counts of falsifying business records related to hush-money payments sent to porn actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.
While the Democratic congressman <a href="https://x.com/deanbphillips/status/1796695686215348594" target="_blank" rel="noopener">slammed</a> Trump as &#8220;a serial liar, cheater, and philanderer, a six-time declarer of corporate bankruptcy, an instigator of insurrection, and a convicted felon,&#8221; he argued on Friday that Hochul should pardon the former president &#8220;for the good of the country.&#8221;
After Phillips was blasted for calling on Hochul to pardon the convicted Republican candidate, he doubled down on his argument in a tweet on Saturday morning.
&#8220;You think pardoning is stupid? Making him a martyr over a payment to a porn star is stupid. (Election charges are entirely different.),&#8221; he <a href="https://x.com/deanbphillips/status/1796873915073003952" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>. &#8220;It’s energizing his base, generating record sums of campaign cash, and will likely result in an electoral boost.&#8221;
Hochul applauded the conviction of Trump, telling <a href="https://www.npr.org/2024/05/31/nx-s1-4987264/new-york-gov-kathy-hochul-weighs-in-on-trumps-conviction-in-her-state" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NPR</a>, &#8220;Justice was served.&#8221; She added that she doesn&#8217;t believe the felony conviction &#8220;is going to be a factor in the election for our congressional candidates.&#8221;
In the immediate aftermath of Trump&#8217;s conviction, donations <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-raises-staggering-sum-of-cash-in-24-hours-since-verdict?topStoryPosition=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">poured</a> into the Trump campaign as the former president raised over $50 million in the 24 hours after the jury&#8217;s verdict, his campaign said. The hush-money trial has been blasted by legal experts who worry that criminal prosecutions of political opponents will become the norm in the U.S.
While a pardon of Trump from a Democratic governor is highly unlikely, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee has other avenues to challenge his conviction. Legal scholar and George Washington University Law School professor Jonathan Turley <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/turley-weighs-in-on-what-comes-next-following-trumps-guilty-verdict" target="_blank" rel="noopener">explained</a> in a blog post published on Friday that, eventually, Trump&#8217;s appeal of the verdict could reach the Supreme Court, adding that he believes “convictions will be overturned.”
“Indeed, moments like this require us to take a leap of faith in a nation that remains committed to the rule of law. Manhattan is neither the entirety of the country nor the legal system. I believe that these convictions will be overturned, but it will take time,” Turley wrote. “Judge Merchan committed, in my view, layers of reversible error. Eventually, this case may reach the United States Supreme Court.”

Trump has already said he will appeal the guilty verdict, which according to New York state law, must come following the sentencing, CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/trump-guilty-verdict-trial-05-31-24/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. Judge Juan Merchan scheduled Trump&#8217;s sentencing for July 11, just four days before the start of the Republican National Convention, where Trump is set to be nominated for president.

After being indicted on federal bribery charges last week, Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/henry-cuellar" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Henry Cuellar</a> (D-TX) is being called on to step down by a Democrat colleague in the House.
Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/dean-phillips" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dean Phillips</a> (D-MN), a former long-shot candidate for president, lumped Cuellar in with former President Donald Trump and Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) as part of a list of politicians who he insisted should resign because they have been indicted.
&#8220;While the bar for Federal indictment is high, trust in our government is low,&#8221; Phillips <a href="https://twitter.com/deanbphillips/status/1786544184490381436" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a post to X. &#8220;That’s why office holders and candidates under indictment should resign or end their campaigns, including Sen. Bob Menendez, Donald Trump, &amp; Rep. Henry Cuellar.&#8221;
The Department of Justice (DOJ) <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/us-congressman-henry-cuellar-and-his-wife-charged-bribery-unlawful-foreign-influence-and" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> on Friday that Cuellar, a 10-term congressman, and his wife Imelda were charged with allegedly participating in schemes involving bribery, unlawful foreign influence, and money laundering.
Cuellar, 68, accepted $600,000 in bribes from two foreign entities — an energy company controlled by Azerbaijan and a bank headquartered in Mexico City — in exchange for official acts as a member of Congress, the DOJ said.
In a <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/05/03/henry-cuellar-texas-azerbaijan/64373556-0966-11ef-b186-090cb777107e_story.html?ref=upstract.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> responding to the indictment, Cuellar said he and his wife were &#8220;innocent of these allegations,&#8221; taking a similarly defiant stance as Trump and Menendez have as they seek to fend off the charges they face.
“Everything I have done in Congress has been to serve the people of South Texas,” Cuellar said. “Before I took action, I proactively sought legal advice from the House Ethics Committee, who gave me more than one written opinion, along with an additional opinion from a national law firm.&#8221;

The DOJ said the Cuellars, who face decades in prison if convicted, surrendered to authorities on Friday and made an initial appearance before a federal judge in Houston before each being released on $100,000 bond, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/henry-cuellar-bribery-indictment-investigation-texas-ec9904da5c51d11600718a3261f73d0c" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the Associated Press</a>.
Menendez, who also faces bribery-related charges, has also been pressured to step down by a fellow Democrat — Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) — amid his legal battle.
“Senator Menendez should resign,&#8221; Fetterman <a href="https://www.fetterman.senate.gov/press-releases/fetterman-calls-on-senator-menendez-to-resign/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a statement. &#8220;He’s entitled to the presumption of innocence under our system, but he is not entitled to continue to wield influence over national policy, especially given the serious and specific nature of the allegations. I hope he chooses an honorable exit and focuses on his trial.&#8221;

Rep. Dean Phillips, the Democrat from Minnesota who challenged President Joe Biden in the party&#8217;s 2024 primary, ended his longshot attempt to win the nomination and endorsed Biden on Wednesday.
Phillips, 55, jumped into the race last October, arguing that 81-year-old Biden is a vulnerable incumbent candidate because of his age and saying it&#8217;s time for the party&#8217;s leader to &#8220;pass the torch.&#8221; Following dismal performances in Democratic primaries across the country, including a third-place finish behind Biden and &#8220;uncommitted&#8221; in his home state on Super Tuesday, Phillips announced he would suspend his campaign and get behind the president.
&#8220;I&#8217;m going to suspend my campaign and I will be, right now, endorsing President Biden because the choices are so clear,&#8221; Phillips said during an interview on a Minnesota radio show, according to <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/dean-phillips-ends-presidential-campaign-rcna142091" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NBC News</a>.
In the Minnesota Democratic presidential primary on Tuesday, Biden won 70% of the vote, while &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nearly-20-of-minnesota-democratic-primary-voters-pick-uncommitted-over-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">uncommitted</a>&#8221; came in second place with nearly 20%, and Phillips finished in third with just 7.8%.
“Congratulations to Joe Biden, Uncommitted, Marianne Williamson, and Nikki Haley for demonstrating more appeal to Democratic Party loyalists than me,” Phillips posted on Tuesday night.
When he launched his campaign, the Democratic congressman warned about his party&#8217;s impending &#8220;emergency&#8221; in November if Biden remained the Democratic nominee.
“I will not sit still, I will not be quiet in the face of numbers that are so clearly saying we’re going to be facing an emergency next November,” Phillips told CBS News. He later added in an interview with NBC&#8217;s &#8220;Meet the Press&#8221; that &#8220;if this election was held today, President Biden would lose, and it is an existential threat to the future of the United States of America.&#8221;
When he announced his presidential campaign, Phillips admitted that the middle class was struggling under Biden&#8217;s watch.
“We have to make life more affordable for the middle class, which is the issue that voters care about most. We need to bring down the cost of living and make life affordable again,” he said. “As part of making life more affordable, we have to celebrate success. America should be the most prosperous country in the world, and we need to be both pro-business and pro-worker to get there.”
In a post on X on Wednesday, Phillips praised Biden&#8217;s &#8220;empathy and kindness&#8221; — sharing a photo of the then-vice president sitting next to Phillips&#8217; two young daughters — and said that Democrats must &#8220;resist Donald Trump again.&#8221;

Presidential hopeful Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) pushed back on an MSNBC panel led by Symone Sanders Townsend — former chief spokesperson for Vice President Kamala Harris — as they attempted to grill him on the heels of his decisive loss in the South Carolina Democratic primary.
Sanders, who worked on Senator Bernie Sanders&#8217; (I-VT) 2016 presidential campaign, began by pointing to the numbers — Phillips took third place behind President Joe Biden and fellow Democratic challenger Marianne Williamson — and asked Phillips to explain how he could possibly hope to win a general election when he could not win the Democratic primary.

Phillips pointed to the fact that his name recognition nationally was practically non-existent — something he attributed to the fact that the Democratic Party appeared to be more interested in simply coronating Joe Biden than in encouraging healthy debate and competition.
&#8220;I think I probably have 5% name recognition now in the country. No voters know me,&#8221; Phillips said. &#8220;In fact, this is my first invitation to your network in four months. So I&#8217;m grateful to all of you — sincerely, I mean that.&#8221;
&#8220;That&#8217;s my whole point,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;The GOP has had a competition. They&#8217;re on TV, they&#8217;re consuming hundreds of hours of primetime television, debates, town halls. CNN has given every GOP candidate a one-hour town hall. At least there&#8217;s energy on the GOP side. We don&#8217;t get energy unless there&#8217;s competition. So when you coronate someone — especially a man like Joe Biden &#8230;&#8221;
Phillips went on to explain that he respected Biden but that his goal was to encourage more competition — a move that he said would ultimately help Democrats to put forth the best and strongest candidates.
Former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele weighed in next: &#8220;So the Chairman in me says, &#8216;What the hell you doing?'&#8221;
Steele went on to argue that the Democratic Party had had a chance to choose someone different in 2020 — and they had chosen Biden. He argued that the fact that Biden was not stepping down — which Phillips said was a &#8220;big mistake&#8221; — meant that the primary was his to lose.

Phillips said he &#8220;absolutely&#8221; prefers Biden defeating Trump, but he argued in favor of competition versus a &#8220;coronation.&#8221; While he voiced support for other Democrats to get in the race, Phillips said he is &#8220;trying to extend an invitation to the president to get in the game because if you want to be the president again the only way to even possibly win is to get out here, listen to voters.&#8221;

According to multiple reports over the weekend, Phillips signaled he would be open to a campaign under the No Labels banner if President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a> appears likely to lose against former President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> should they face each other again in the general election.
“It would have to be a Joe Biden-Donald Trump rematch that shows Joe Biden is almost certain to lose,&#8221; Phillips <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/20/us/politics/dean-phillips-no-labels-biden.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told The New York Times</a>. &#8220;That is the only condition in which I would even entertain a conversation with any alternative.&#8221;
In a <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/01/21/election-2024-campaign-updates/#link-ERBH4EKUYJCYXCIYULW5RHHCOM" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Washington Post interview</a>, Phillips said the data would have to indicate a &#8220;better way&#8221; to defeat Trump for him to contemplate a third-party run. For now, Phillips said he is &#8220;focused exclusively on running as a Democrat and securing the nomination because that is the most expeditious, reasonable, common-sense way forward.&#8221;

No Labels is an organization touting an <a href="https://www.nolabels.org/unity-ticket-faqs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“insurance project”</a> in the form of a “Unity ticket,&#8221; citing polls that show broad <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2024/01/13/biden-trump-rematch-lead-in-polls/72087419007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dissatisfaction</a> among voters when considering the prospect of a 2020 rematch between Biden and Trump.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) has long been speculated to be mulling a potential run with No Labels. He <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/joe-manchin-announces-he-will-not-seek-re-election-to-senate-in-2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> in November that he would not seek re-election and planned to travel around the country &#8220;to see if there’s an interest in creating a movement to mobilize the middle and bring Americans together.&#8221;
Biden&#8217;s re-election campaign dismissed on Sunday the notion that the incumbent could face a viable threat from a third-party candidate now that Phillips is mulling a No Labels bid.
&#8220;At the end of the day, there’s only going to be two parties that have an ability to get to 270 electoral votes, and that’s going to be Joe Biden as a Democratic nominee and whoever emerges from the extreme Republican primary that’s going on right now,&#8221; Biden principal deputy campaign manager Quentin Fulks said on ABC&#8217;s &#8220;This Week.&#8221;

To assist in that effort, Ackman said, he is wiring $1 million to We Deserve Better, a political action committee that is supporting Phillips. &#8220;This is by far the largest investment I have ever made in someone running for office, and I am making this investment at a high-risk, but critically important moment for his campaign,&#8221; Phillips added.

Ackman said he met Phillips two months ago. &#8220;I have kept in pretty close touch with him over the last two months, and spent 90 minutes with him yesterday when he presented to nearly all of our employees, which inspired me to top up my initial $3,300 donation to his campaign,&#8221; he added.
Biden is &#8220;polling poorly&#8221; against former President Donald Trump, the GOP frontrunner, and the incumbent&#8217;s numbers &#8220;are only going to get worse as he ages, and he is not looking good as it is,&#8221; Ackman said. He also warned there is a &#8220;reasonable chance that Biden is forced to withdraw for health reasons.&#8221;
Ackman, CEO of Pershing Square, garnered headlines over the past few months as he railed against Ivy League presidents who <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-passes-resolution-condemning-testimony-of-university-presidents-on-anti-semitism" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dodged on the question</a> of whether calling for the genocide of Jews on campuses violated their schools’ policies on bullying and harassment. He has particularly focused on Harvard, where he is an alum and donor, in the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/major-players-in-harvard-controversy-sound-off-on-gays-resignation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">successful push</a> to get President Claudine Gay to resign in the face of another controversy involving plagiarism allegations.
Another area in which Ackman has <a href="https://twitter.com/BillAckman/status/1742441534627184760" target="_blank" rel="noopener">trained his fire</a> is on the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) movement that has permeated his alma mater and beyond. That led some to suggest that there may be a <a href="https://twitter.com/njhochman/status/1746616463455088725" target="_blank" rel="noopener">conflict of interest</a> because Phillips has a record that indicates support for DEI and appears to have had a <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/2796445/bill-ackman-grilled-over-1-million-dean-phillips-donation/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">now-scrubbed section</a> on his website dedicated to the cause.
In response to the attention the issue was getting on social media, Ackman <a href="https://twitter.com/BillAckman/status/1746731308116517264" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> he believes Phillips &#8220;didn’t understand what DEI was when that was made part of his website. I made the same mistake. He is getting educated as we speak. Let’s listen to what he has to say after he gets educated. That’s the danger of the DEI movement. It comes inside a Trojan horse &#8230; constructed of beneficent sounding words.&#8221;
During a Spaces conversation with Ackman and X owner Elon Musk on Monday — Martin Luther King Jr. Day — Phillips invoked the late civil rights leader after whom the holiday is named in speaking favorably of the &#8220;equality of opportunity&#8221; while dismissing attempts to &#8220;guarantee the quality of outcomes.&#8221; He added, &#8220;I think it&#8217;s time to reframe this entire conversation and reunite this country by all agreeing on this simple notion: it&#8217;s time to elevate the foundation so that every person in this country starts from a place [where] they can succeed.&#8221;

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) ripped President Joe Biden during Democratic presidential event this week for the collapse of the U.S. Southern Border.
Phillips, who is a longshot candidate, made the remarks during NewsNation’s Democratic Presidential Forum on Friday with other longshot candidates Cenk Uygur and Marianne Williamson.
Phillips called Biden&#8217;s border crisis, which experts have said was directly caused by his policies, “an unmitigated, embarrassing, unforgivable disaster.”
His remarks came within the context of explaining numerous issues where he disagrees with Biden.
“The other area where I differ with him immensely is our southern border,” said Phillips. “I’ve been there twice. It is an unmitigated, embarrassing, unforgivable disaster, and Democrats, as Cenk said earlier, have to wake up to the truth.”

He warned that Democrats risked a Republican winning the White House in 2024 because his party has taken little to no action to fix what is happening at the border, saying that Republican presidential candidates are &#8220;actually listening&#8221; to voters.
&#8220;And I think it’s time that Democrats do, and I’m afraid that President Biden is at a stage where he has lost the ability to legitimately listen,&#8221; he said.
He also took a shot at Biden for refusing to participate in Democrat presidential events, saying that it was disrespectful to the voters and the country at large.

Dem Biden Challenger Disagrees With Ruling That Kicked Trump Off Colorado Ballot

Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/dean-phillips" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dean Phillips</a> (D-MN) announced on Friday that he is running for the Democrat presidential nomination against President Joe Biden because he believes that Biden will lose in 2024.
The 54-year-old had <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/democrat-lawmaker-plans-to-announce-primary-bid-against-biden-next-week" target="_blank" rel="noopener">publicly</a> flirted with the idea for months as he has tried to encourage other, more prominent Democrats to jump into the race after saying earlier this year that he planned on running for president one day, but he wasn’t sure if he was ready at this moment in time.
Dean stepped down from his leadership position within the House Democrats over his public calls for others to step up and challenge Biden.
Dean announced during an interview with CBS News that he was now seeking the party&#8217;s nomination for president, saying that he could not sit silent anymore about Biden&#8217;s poor poll numbers.
He said that his presidential campaign was going to center around four key topics.
&#8220;First and foremost, it will be about the economy. We have to make life more affordable for the middle class, which is the issue that voters care about most. We need to bring down the cost of living and make life affordable again,&#8221; he said. &#8220;As part of making life more affordable, we have to celebrate success. America should be the most prosperous country in the world, and we need to be both pro-business and pro-worker to get there.&#8221;
&#8220;Second, it will be about safety. If people don’t feel safe in their communities, not much else matters. We have a drug crisis and a mental health crisis in this country; it’s taking a horrible toll on individuals, as well as their communities. We have to address it,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;Third, my campaign will be about the generational change the country wants and policies that invest in our future, our young people.&#8221;
