Tony Bobulinski, a decorated military officer and former business partner of Hunter Biden who has produced emails suggesting that Joe Biden was the “big guy” entitled to 10%, told the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees on Tuesday that he was never approached by federal law enforcement for evidence.
Bobulinski&#8217;s opening remarks to the committees interviewing him as part of the impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden included the fact that he has never been asked to give evidence against the Bidens by federal law enforcement, despite his possession of reams of first-hand communications.
“United States law enforcement appears to have been singularly unwilling to speak with me or to hear the facts we will be discussing today,&#8221; said Bobulinski, who holds a security clearance and a bipartisan background. &#8220;I have never been contacted to provide testimony nor asked to speak with anyone connected with Joe Biden’s administration, including his Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Internal Revenue Service, or local law enforcement.&#8221;
&#8220;That includes U.S. Attorney David Weiss for the District of Delaware or any of the several grand juries I now know were convened after my name became publicly known,” he said in opening remarks that he released concurrent with his closed-door interview.
Bobulinski said that in October 2020 he walked in to the FBI’s Washington Field Office “with several phones containing years of encrypted communications between me and numerous members of the Biden family” and spoke to agents there, but it “was never followed up upon.”
Weiss, the Delaware prosecutor, did not immediately return a question from The Daily Wire about why he did not interview Bobulinski.
Weiss was originally planning a lenient plea deal for Hunter Biden’s tax and gun issues, before whistleblowers leaked information suggesting he was going soft on the president’s son, and Weiss <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/david-weiss-says-hell-indict-hunter-biden-the-final-part-of-the-cover-up-begins" target="_blank" rel="noopener">scrapped the deal</a>. (Hunter&#8217;s attorneys used Joe Biden to their benefit in the criminal case, threatening to call him as a witness and spur a &#8220;constitutional crisis.&#8221;) Other more serious potential crimes by the First Son saw the statute of limitations run out as law enforcement did little.
Bobulinski said he personally met with Joe Biden multiple times to discuss “broad contours of our business dealings,” despite Biden claiming he was not involved in and never discussed Hunter’s business ventures.
“The American people will finally hear the facts and evidence that I have been trying to outline for over four years, all backed up and supported by emails, texts, documents, records, pictures, and other evidence. The facts we are going to discuss today are important for America&#8217;s national security,” <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hunter-biden-business-partner-a-pro-democrat-navy-veteran-hunter-asked-dad-to-sign-off-on-deals" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bobulinski</a> said in his opening statement. 
“For over six years, I was an officer in the United States Navy’s elite Naval Nuclear Power Training Command as a decorated Master Training Specialist Instructor. I later served as the Command&#8217;s Chief Technology Officer, where I held a Q security clearance from the Department of Energy and from the National Security Agency. When I left NNPTC, I was the number-one-ranked Direct Input Officer (DIO) in the entire command in my final Navy Fitness Report,” he said. 
Bobulinsky said he has donated money to Democrats, including Oversight Committee member Rho Khanna, only to have Democrats accuse him of pushing “Russian disinformation” and being a Republican operative when the facts that he saw personally were not helpful to Joe Biden. 
&#8220;Joe Biden’s immediate family members were enriched to the tune of tens of millions of dollars from some of our most dangerous adversaries, including the Chinese Communist Party and players from Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Kazakhstan and other foreign nations and entities,&#8221; he said.
“From my direct personal experience and what I have subsequently come to learn, it is clear to me that Joe Biden was &#8216;the Brand&#8217; being sold by the Biden family. His family’s foreign influence peddling operation – from China to Ukraine and elsewhere – sold out to foreign actors who were seeking to gain influence and access to Joe Biden and the United States government. Joe Biden was more than a participant in and beneficiary of his family’s business; he was an enabler,” he said.
“The Chinese Communist Party through its surrogate, China Energy Company Limited, or &#8216;CEFC&#8217; – a CCP-linked Chinese energy conglomerate – successfully sought to infiltrate and compromise Joe Biden and the Obama-Biden White House. This process started in the Fourth Quarter of 2015 and continued through when Joe Biden left office in January 2017 to March of 2018 when CEFC Chairman Ye was detained for corruption in China, never to be seen again. Note that on October 21, 2015, Joe Biden announced that he would not seek the Presidency in 2016. It is not a coincidence that CEFC&#8217;s aggressive approach to the Biden family happened around the same time,” he said, adding that Joe Biden was aware of the CEFC transaction.  
Bobulinski said that Hunter and Joe Biden’s brother James Biden “defrauded” him in order to maximize theoir own take in a deal involving Russia, China, and Qatar, and that Joe Biden served as an “enforcement” role. 
Last month, another Hunter Biden business partner, <a href="https://oversight.house.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Walker-Transcript.pdf">Rob Walker</a>, sat for a similar interview with the congressional committees, revealing that he received $3 million from Chinese energy firm CEFC around the time then-Vice President Joe Biden met with CEFC brass. Walker then steered $1 million of the money to Biden family members. 
Walker also explained how a Romanian oligarch, Gabriel Popoviciu, paid the business partners $3 million. Popuviciu faced corruption charges in Romania, while Joe Biden worked on anti-corruption work in Romania as part of his vice president portfolio.

Special Counsel David Weiss&#8217; office shredded President Joe Biden&#8217;s son, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/hunter-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hunter Biden</a>, in a court filing on Tuesday for attempting to get the felony gun charges he faces dismissed.
The filing came in response to a motion that Biden&#8217;s team filed last month that claimed he faced a “selective and vindictive prosecution” that was politically motivated.
“The charges in this case are not trumped up or because of former President Trump — they are instead a result of the defendant’s own choices and were brought in spite of, not because of, any outside noise made by politicians,” Weiss wrote in the filing this week.
Hunter Biden&#8217;s team argued that Weiss &#8220;buckled&#8221; under political pressure from &#8220;former President Trump (who appointed Mr. Weiss), extremist House Republicans, and the far-right media.&#8221;
Weiss fired back in his filing, saying that Hunter Biden produces no evidence to support his allegation that the Executive Branch, led by his father, President Biden, and its Justice Department, led by the Attorney General appointed by his father, authorized prosecution by the U.S. Attorney and Special Counsel of their choosing for an &#8220;improper political purpose.&#8221;
Weiss called Hunter Biden&#8217;s attempts to dismiss the charges as &#8220;absurd,&#8221; saying that his motion to dismiss was &#8220;stunningly weak and wholly unsupported by facts and law.&#8221;
The special counsel noted that Hunter Biden helped prosecutors in their case against him by giving them evidence after he knew that he was under investigation.
“After the defendant announced his awareness of a federal investigation of him in 2020, the defendant chose to author and sell a book in 2021 in which he made countless incriminating statements about his years-long drug usage, including during the time period he purchased and possessed the gun,” Weiss wrote.

Weiss went even further, noting that investigators &#8220;literally found drugs&#8221; on the pouch where Hunter Biden kept his gun.
&#8220;In 2023, FBI investigators pulled sealed evidence from the state police vault to take photographs of the defendant&#8217;s firearm,&#8221; Weiss said. &#8220;After opening the evidence, FBI investigators observed a white powdery substance on the defendant&#8217;s brown leather pouch that had held the defendant&#8217;s firearm in October 2018. Based on their training and experience, investigators believed that this substance was likely cocaine and that this evidence would corroborate the messages that investigators had obtained which showed the defendant buying and using drugs in October 2018. An FBI chemist subsequently analyzed the residue and determined that it was cocaine. To be clear, investigators literally found drugs on the pouch where the defendant had kept his gun.&#8221;

President Joe Biden&#8217;s son, Hunter Biden, was hit with numerous felony charges on Thursday night stemming from a federal investigation into his taxes.
CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/12/07/politics/hunter-biden-criminal-case/index.html">reported</a> that Hunter was hit with nine counts on charges that include failure to file and pay taxes; evasion of assessment; and false or fraudulent tax return.
Special Counsel David Weiss recently impaneled a federal grand jury in Los Angeles that was weighing evidence related to potential tax crimes.
&#8220;The Defendant engaged in a four-year scheme to not pay at least $1.4 million in self-assessed federal taxes he owed for tax years 2016 through 2019,&#8221; prosecutors said in court documents, adding that he &#8220;willfully failed&#8221; to pay the owed taxes &#8220;despite having access to funds to pay some or all of these taxes.&#8221;
Prosecutors said that Hunter Biden made more than $7 million during that time span, which included money that he received from Burisma, CEFC China Energy, and others.

&#8220;Between 2016 and October 15, 2020, the Defendant spent this money on drugs, escorts and girlfriends, luxury hotels and rental properties, exotic cars, clothing, and other items of a personal nature, in short, everything but his taxes,&#8221; prosecutors said.
Hunter Biden was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hunter-biden-indicted-on-gun-charges" target="_blank" rel="noopener">indicted</a> on federal gun charges in September after the prosecutors and Hunter Biden&#8217;s legal team failed to reach an agreement on a plea deal that fell apart in August. The agreement fell apart after U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika questioned the limits of Hunter’s immunity under the deal.
Hunter Biden was charged with three crimes related to false statements made on a federal application to purchase a firearm. The charges relate to a time when, in October 2018, Hunter claimed he was clean of drugs to purchase a handgun. He later wrote in his memoir that he was addicted to crack cocaine at the time.

House Judiciary Chairman <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/jim-jordan">Jim Jordan</a> (R-OH) told reporters this statement, belying how the prosecutor &#8220;pretends that somehow he did have that&#8221; authority, was &#8220;the key takeaway&#8221; from the transcribed interview Weiss did with lawmakers on Tuesday <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/doj-clears-hunter-biden-prosecutor-for-testimony-in-near-term" target="_blank" rel="noopener">following negotiations</a> with the Department of Justice (DOJ).
&#8220;He won&#8217;t answer a lot of questions. But that&#8217;s the key takeaway, because this whole deposition was about the changing story we got from DOJ, regarding the authority that he had,&#8221; Jordan added, according to a <a href="https://twitter.com/judiciarygop/status/1721980735681130606" target="_blank" rel="noopener">post to X</a> by the House Judiciary GOP.
Jordan also said the testimony is &#8220;consistent&#8221; with <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/irs-whistleblower-notes-released-to-counter-fbi-agents-testimony-on-hunter-biden-probe" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claims</a> made by Internal Revenue Service (IRS) supervisory special agent Gary Shapley, who asserts that Weiss — when he was solely a U.S. attorney from Delaware — told investigators during an October 2022 meeting that he was not the “deciding person” when it came to charges.
The Daily Wire reached out to the DOJ seeking comment on Jordan&#8217;s statements about the closed-door deposition, the transcript of which was not immediately released. The agency shared a statement from Weiss to the House Judiciary Committee in which he said &#8220;processes&#8221; associated with investigative and charging decisions did not &#8220;interfere&#8221; with his authority.
&#8220;At no time was I blocked, or otherwise prevented from pursuing charges or taking the steps necessary in the investigation by other United States Attorneys, the Tax Division or anyone else at the Department of Justice,&#8221; he testified.
House Judiciary ranking member Jerry Nadler (D-NY) said Weiss &#8220;was very clear that no one told him what to prosecute and what not to prosecute,&#8221; <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2023/11/07/hunter-biden-weiss-testimony-congress/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to The Washington Post</a>. &#8220;He made all those decisions himself, and he said that before. And I mean, [Republicans] tried to get him to say anything, but they just go over and over and over again the same thing.&#8221;

A federal grand jury in Delaware indicted Biden on federal gun charges in September, after which he <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hunter-biden-pleads-not-guilty-to-gun-charges" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pleaded not guilty</a>. The first son may also face an indictment on tax evasion charges, which were part of the plea agreement.
But it has been a strenuous process for congressional investigators to glean what had transpired behind the scenes over the years-long investigation.
Shapley, joined by fellow IRS agent Joseph Ziegler in coming forward as a whistleblower, brought forth allegations that the criminal inquiry into Biden that the DOJ slow-walked the inquiry in a way that may have <a href="https://oversight.house.gov/release/hearing-wrap-up-irs-whistleblowers-expose-how-bidens-were-treated-differently%EF%BF%BC/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">precluded other serious charges</a> due to the statute of limitations.
Amid increasing scrutiny, Weiss <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/irs-whistleblower-notes-released-to-counter-fbi-agents-testimony-on-hunter-biden-probe" target="_blank" rel="noopener">went from saying</a> he had the “ultimate authority” to acknowledging discussions with DOJ officials who <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/house/4297750-special-counsel-in-hunter-biden-probe-rejects-claims-he-was-stymied-from-pursuing-the-case/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“assured”</a> him that he would have power to bring charges outside of his district if it proved necessary. In his statement on Tuesday, Weiss stressed, &#8220;As I have said previously, I did not request special counsel status until August 2023. When I made that request, it was promptly granted.&#8221;
During testimony before the House Judiciary Committee <a href="https://www.c-span.org/video/?530429-1/justice-department-oversight-hearing-part-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in September</a>, Garland insisted that Weiss always had latitude to bring any charges he saw fit, but the attorney general acknowledged other U.S. attorneys could <a href="https://twitter.com/DailyCaller/status/1704531213174640800">refuse</a> to partner with Weiss. Indeed, top federal prosecutors from Washington, D.C., and California <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/10/09/biden-picked-us-attorney-admits-balking-at-hunter-biden-case/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> House lawmakers in <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/u-s-attorney-california-david-weiss-full-authority-charge-hunter-biden/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">testimony</a> that they declined to do so.
&#8220;Once again Shapley and Ziegler&#8217;s testimony continues to stand up to every single witness we brought in for an interview,&#8221; Jordan said on Tuesday.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) indicated that special counsel <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/david-weiss">David Weiss</a> will soon be allowed to testify to Congress about his investigation of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/hunter-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hunter Biden</a>, the son of the president.
Assistant Attorney General Carlos Uriarte sent a letter on Friday telling the House Judiciary Committee that the DOJ &#8220;reaffirms its commitment&#8221; to make Weiss available to appear in &#8220;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/09/25/doj-hunter-biden-prosecutor-can-testify-to-house-gop-panel.html">near term</a>&#8221; and offered to make the U.S. attorneys in California and Washington, D.C., available for testimony.
Chairman <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/jim-jordan">Jim Jordan</a> (R-OH) had requested the DOJ make Weiss, a U.S. attorney from Delaware, free for a transcribed interview on October 11. It was one of <a href="https://judiciary.house.gov/sites/evo-subsites/republicans-judiciary.house.gov/files/evo-media-document/2023-09-18-jdj-to-garland-re-doc-request.pdf">several demands in Jordan&#8217;s letter</a>, which sought information on the authority Weiss had to bring charges. The DOJ <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/07/24/doj-allows-hunter-biden-prosecutor-to-testify-before-congress-on-alleged-coverup/">previously said</a> in July that it was prepared to let Weiss testify, but then a plea deal in the case fell apart.
&#8220;The volume and requested pace of the Committee’s proposed schedule far exceeds the Department’s resources, especially in light of the Committee’s other pending requests and subpoenas to the Department on other topics,” Uriarte said in his new letter.
&#8220;We remain committed to providing information voluntarily, without unnecessary escalation,&#8221; Uriarte wrote, adding, &#8220;However, any additional testimony and documents shared at this early juncture must continue to be appropriately limited to protect the ongoing matter and important confidentiality interests.&#8221;
Uriarte did not make clear when exactly Weiss is free to testify, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/09/25/doj-hunter-biden-prosecutor-can-testify-to-house-gop-panel.html">according to CNBC</a>, although Jordan told Fox News over the weekend that Weiss had agreed to appear before his committee on October 18. &#8220;We look forward to that,&#8221; he added.
The Daily Wire reached out to the special counsel&#8217;s office seeking comment.

Special counsel David Weiss, who was appointed by the DOJ, now says he intends to seek an indictment against Hunter Biden in the gun charge case.
Hunter Biden is a garbage bag of a human being who began a romantic relationship with his brother&#8217;s wife after his brother died. He also was a massive drug abuser who bought a gun and tossed it in a trash can near a school. But that&#8217;s not the main problem with Hunter Biden.
The main problem is that he was a bag man for his dad.
Everyone knows this, including Hunter Biden, who literally texted his own daughter that he paid half of his father&#8217;s bills. He failed to pay taxes for years while earning tens of millions of dollars for friends, family, and himself. But no one was checking into the deeper questions: Where was this money going? Was influence being peddled?
Why, for example, was Hunter Biden not being charged with violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act? He acted like a foreign agent operating on behalf of a foreign company that was clearly related to American domestic concerns. He acted as a go-between for a Ukrainian company, Burisma, and the American government. It’s obvious that you have to register as a foreign agent to do that; he didn’t. Why wasn&#8217;t he prosecuted for that?
The original theory was that David Weiss, even if he had wanted to, couldn&#8217;t because the DOJ under Joe Biden didn&#8217;t give him special counsel status to prosecute. That was the case made by IRS whistleblowers like Gary Shapley.
The DOJ then tried to bring a sweetheart deal in front of a judge for Hunter Biden — that he would plead guilty on some tax charges, get no jail time, and, on the gun charge, be given a diversion instead of an actual conviction on his record. But buried in the gun charge was immunity from all further prosecution on things like Foreign Agents Registration Act violations.
The judge looked at this and said, “I&#8217;ve never seen a deal remotely like this. Why are you immunizing him from further prosecution or investigation on financial crimes in the gun charge? You&#8217;re doing this to hide the fact that you&#8217;re doing this.” And then she blew it up in open court and the DOJ denied what was going on. The deal fell through. The Biden administration knew that what was going on was an obvious scandal in which the DOJ massaged the entire process so that Hunter would never be investigated for his involvement with his dad.

That&#8217;s when Merrick Garland came out and said, “OK, you know what? We&#8217;re going to make David Weiss the special counsel.” So they did it. That also came just in time for David Weiss not to testify in front of Congress about all of this, because once he was getting special counsel status, how could he be asked about failure to be given special counsel status? He could simply say, “Listen, there&#8217;s an ongoing investigation. I can&#8217;t comment on ongoing investigations or negotiations.”
It was all very convenient. It was all very obviously a cover-up. And now we come to the final part of the cover up: David Weiss seeking charges on the gun charges by the end of the month. The real question is: Is this gun charge now going to include a plea deal that immunizes Hunter Biden from further investigation, or is David Weiss going to say, “Hey, we&#8217;re done here. Move on. There won&#8217;t be any investigation into the finances of Joe and Hunter Biden.”
Apparently, Weiss is still weighing whether to charge Hunter Biden with tax crimes. He said in a court filing last month that the trial is now in order on the tax offenses and he might bring additional tax charges in California or Washington, D.C. But all of that is irrelevant to the broader question: where the money was coming from and where the money was going.
What Biden wants for his son is some sort of slap on the wrist that basically allows him out of jail. And if they do and they just drop the rest of the investigation, then it was pretty obvious the special counsel stuff was simply a ruse. This is what House Republicans have been saying. They sent a letter to Hunter Biden&#8217;s lawyer saying if he refuses to provide the committee with requested information because of any purported privilege, the committee may need to see testimony from him (the lawyer) and/or Hunter Biden regarding the disclosure of documents and communications.
James Comer, the head of the House Oversight Committee, said there are emails showing Hunter&#8217;s legal team telling Joe Biden how to spin his corruption throughout this entire process. What Joe Biden has always said in the mainstream media is: “Why are you investigating Hunter Biden? He wasn&#8217;t a part of the government.” He intimated that he had a firewall between the government and his son. That&#8217;s not true. We&#8217;ve proven that in the last two weeks.
Joe Biden has been a corrupt politician since the day he was elected to the United States Senate. We&#8217;re supposed to pretend he is as clean as the fresh driven snow. Not only that, but it was also perfectly legitimate for him to hide a bunch of emails in which he was using a pseudonym to coordinate with his son, who was corruptly picking up cash in a foreign country.
And the legacy media is going to pretend that&#8217;s totally normal.

Special Counsel David Weiss said in a new court filing this week that President Joe Biden&#8217;s son, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/hunter-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hunter Biden</a>, will be indicted this month.
&#8220;The Speedy Trial Act requires that the Government obtain the return of an indictment by a grand jury by Friday, September 29, 2023, at the earliest,&#8221; Weiss said in the filing. &#8220;The Government intends to seek the return of an indictment in this case before that date.&#8221;
While the exact charges were not revealed in the court filing, CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/09/06/politics/hunter-biden-gun-charges-indictment" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that they are gun-related charges. Additional charges related to Hunter Biden&#8217;s taxes or foreign business dealings, which have been part of the criminal investigation into him, could be included or come at a later date.
Weiss, before he was appointed as special counsel in the case, was originally willing to “to forgo any prosecution of” Hunter Biden and was close “to agreeing to end the investigation without requiring a guilty plea on any charges,” according to The New York Times.
Weiss’ position on the matter reportedly changed right around the time that two IRS agents came forward as whistleblowers and alleged that they had been stymied from pushing the probe further due to pressure from higher-ups at the Department of Justice.

House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) and House Ways &amp; Means Chair Jason Smith (R-MO) subpoenaed four federal agents this week in their probe into IRS whistleblower allegations of corruption in the criminal investigation into President Joe Biden&#8217;s son, Hunter Biden.
The four federal agents allegedly were &#8220;present at&#8221; or have &#8220;direct knowledge&#8221; of a meeting in October of last year where one of the IRS whistleblowers says that Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss — who was recently appointed special counsel in the case — did not have the final say on whether to bring charges against Hunter Biden outside of his district. Weiss and U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland have disputed those claims.
The individuals subpoenaed include Michael T. Batdorf, IRS director of field operations; Darrell J. Waldon, IRS special agent in charge; Thomas J. Sobocinski, FBI special agent in charge; and Ryeshia Holley, FBI assistant special agent in charge.

Honig <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/david-weis-doj-accused-making-unholy-mess-with-hunter-biden-case-all-over-map?intcmp=tw_fnc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spoke with host Poppy Harlow</a> about Weiss&#8217; long history with the case, noting that the Delaware-based U.S. Attorney had multiple opportunities to charge the president&#8217;s embattled son and that he had repeatedly put off doing so until whistleblower testimony and public pressure backed him into a corner.
Harlow began with a report from The New York Times that said Weiss had been prepared to forego any charges in Hunter&#8217;s case but that the IRS whistleblowers had forced his hand.

&#8220;But if you look at that reporting, first he was willing to let this thing go altogether. Political pressure ramped up, he backtracks and says, &#8216;Oh no we’re going to need to take misdemeanor pleas,'&#8221; Honig continued. &#8220;Then they go into court ready to take misdemeanor pleas, more pressure, more testimony from the IRS and then this deal falls apart, and now he says, &#8216;Well now I need to be called Special Counsel.'&#8221;
&#8220;It seems like now twice, he’s tried to make this case go away cheaply, twice been called out on it, and twice backtracked, only in response to the whistleblowers,&#8221; the legal analyst concluded.
Weiss&#8217; apparent willingness to let the younger Biden off with a proverbial wrist-slap is one of the main reasons that many Republicans — who have long been calling for the Justice Department to appoint a special counsel to oversee Hunter Biden&#8217;s case — are at least wary that Weiss was the one chosen to take on that task.

Special Counsel Investigating Hunter Biden Changed His Mind About Plea Deal Before It Blew Up In Court: Report

U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/08/17/politics/hunter-biden-tax-charges-plea-deal-dismissed/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dismissed</a> two misdemeanor tax charges against Hunter Biden on Thursday evening. However, the move came after newly appointed Special Counsel David Weiss asked Noreika to dismiss those charges stemming from Hunter&#8217;s now-defunct plea deal so that new charges could potentially be filed against President Joe Biden&#8217;s son in either California or Washington, D.C.
In late July, Hunter&#8217;s plea deal over alleged tax crimes and other illegal behavior <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hunter-biden-plea-deal-almost-derails-after-questions-about-scope-of-deal-immunity" target="_blank" rel="noopener">completely fell apart</a> after Noreika inquired about how much immunity the deal would effectively grant to Hunter. The proposed deal would have involved Hunter pleading guilty to the now-dismissed tax misdemeanors and admitting the facts of a gun charge. If approved, the deal would likely have meant no jail time for the president’s son and — according to Hunter&#8217;s team — block future legal action against Hunter, thus making it a de facto pardon.
Noreika put the plea deal on hold, leading Hunter to plead not guilty. In turn, the judge requested at the time that both federal prosecutors and Hunter’s lawyers take the time to further hash out the details of a plea deal. Then, last Friday, Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Weiss as special counsel.
By Tuesday, Weiss&#8217; team filed in court that the plea deal and diversion program apart of it were &#8220;now-withdrawn&#8221; and &#8220;never went into effect,&#8221; meaning that &#8220;none of its terms are binding on either party,&#8221; CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/08/15/politics/special-counsel-hunter-biden-gun-deal/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
Hunter&#8217;s attorneys agreed with Weiss&#8217; request that the two tax misdemeanors should be dismissed, according to CNN. Noreika approved the request from both parties Thursday.
Critics of the special counsel have argued that the new status of the case provides further protection for Hunter and his father and could prevent congressional testimony from key actors.

For its part, the House Oversight Committee has <a href="https://oversight.house.gov/release/comer-justice-department-attempting-a-biden-family-coverup/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pledged</a> &#8220;to follow the Biden family’s money trail and interview witnesses to determine whether foreign actors targeted the Bidens, President Biden is compromised and corrupt, and our national security is threatened. We will also continue to work with the House Committees on Judiciary and Ways and Means to root out misconduct at the Justice Department and hold bad actors accountable for weaponizing law enforcement powers.&#8221;
Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) said in a statement, “This move by Attorney General Garland is part of the Justice Department’s efforts to attempt a Biden family coverup in light of the House Oversight Committee’s mounting evidence of President Joe Biden’s role in his family’s schemes selling ‘the brand’ for millions of dollars to foreign nationals.&#8221;
It is unclear what will happen to the original gun charges from Hunter&#8217;s now-void plea deal.
