Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, agreed to pay the family of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/daunte-wright">Daunte Wright</a> $3.25 million as part of a settlement over Wright’s death during a traffic stop last year.
The city agreed to pay the settlement, as well as implement reforms affecting police training and policies, the Wright family’s legal team said in a statement on Tuesday night. The settlement is not yet finalized, however, according to the Chicago law firm Romanucci &amp; Blandin. Wright’s family is still pushing for “substantial and meaningful non-monetary relief,” including further reforms and funding for a permanent memorial to Wright, according to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/06/22/daunte-wright-settlement-wrongful-death-lawsuit-325-million/">The Washington Post</a>.
Wright’s family members “hope and believe the measures of change to policing, policies and training will create important improvements to the community in Daunte&#8217;s name,” co-counsel Antonio M. Romanucci said, according to the Minneapolis <a href="https://www.startribune.com/brooklyn-center-reaches-settlement-with-daunte-wrights-family-for-3-25-million/600184093/?refresh=true">Star Tribune</a>. “Nothing can bring him back, but the family hopes his legacy is a positive one and prevents any other family from enduring the type of grief they will live with for the rest of their lives.”
Wright died during a traffic stop last year after he was shot by a Brooklyn Center police officer while resisting arrest. Former officer Kim Potter said she mistakenly shot Wright with her sidearm while attempting to tase the 20-year-old black man. Wright was stopped for driving a vehicle with an expired registration tag and for having an air freshener hanging from the rearview mirror, which is illegal in Minnesota.
A jury <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-trial-outcome-reached-in-kim-potter-case">convicted</a> Potter of first and second-degree manslaughter in December. She was <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/02/18/1081597518/kim-potter-daunte-wright-sentencing">sentenced</a> to two years in state custody in February, well under Minnesota’s recommended sentencing guidelines after the judge took into account what she said were mitigating factors.
“Nothing can explain or fill the emptiness in our lives without Daunte or our continued grief at the senseless way he died. But in his name, we will move forward, and it was important to us that his loss be used for positive change in the community, not just for a financial settlement for our family. We hope Black families, people of color, and all residents feel safer now in Brooklyn Center because of the changes the city must make to resolve our claims. Former police officer <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-ex-police-officer-kim-potter-found-guilty-in-death-of-daunte-wright">Kim Potter has been found guilty</a> of first and second-degree manslaughter in the death of Daunte Wright.
The jury’s decision comes after roughly 27 hours of deliberation. Deliberation began on Monday after closing arguments from the prosecution and Potter’s defense team.
As jury deliberation stretched into multiple days, speculation spread that the jury may be deadlocked on a decision after Potter’s emotional testimony last week. During her testimony, Potter <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-watch-former-police-officer-kim-potter-breaks-down-describing-moment-she-shot-daunte-wright">broke down</a> multiple times, at one point breaking down into apologies for what happened.
Potter’s defense team has never contested that she mistakenly pulled her gun when she meant to pull her taser, and that that mistake led to the death of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old black man, as he tried to flee police officers on April 11. Instead, the defense has painted a sympathetic picture of a person stuck in a chaotic and dangerous situation where split-second decisions had to be made.
The prosecution argued that Potter’s lethal mistake is inexcusable.
“This was no oopsie, this not putting the wrong date on a check, this was not entering the wrong password, this was a colossal screw-up, a blunder of epic proportions, it was precisely the thing she was warned about for years, it was irreversible and it was fatal,” prosecutor Erin Eldridge said in closing arguments on Monday.
Potter is facing charges of first and second-degree manslaughter over Wright’s death. Potter broke down in tears multiple times on Friday, once apologizing for what happened after facing a grilling from Eldridge. She broke down at least two more times while being grilled by prosecuting attorney Erin Eldridge over the events of April 11, once just before a lunch recess was called and once more just before Eldridge concluded her first cross examination of Potter.
During the latter exchange, Potter wept, exclaiming that she is “sorry” for killing Wright, a 20-year-old black man. “I’m sorry it happened. I’m so sorry,” Potter said while burying her face in her hands.

After she concluded her testimony, her defense team rested its case. Judge Regina Chu gave brief instructions to the jury to avoid discussing the case or reading reports of the trial over the weekend before dismissing them until Monday morning for closing arguments.
Potter is facing charges of first- and second-degree manslaughter. Potter faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

The defense in the trial of former Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, police officer Kim Potter rested on Friday, leaving closing arguments and the start of jury deliberation to begin next week.
The defense rested its case after Potter herself took the stand as the last witness in the case. Judge Regina Chu instructed jurors to stay away from the media and refrain from speaking about the trial over the weekend before dismissing them until Monday morning, when the court will begin again with closing arguments.
During her testimony, Potter <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-watch-former-police-officer-kim-potter-breaks-down-describing-moment-she-shot-daunte-wright">described</a> the moment she shot Daunte Wright on April 11 as the 20-year-old black man was attempting to flee officers. She broke down during the testimony, covering her face with her hands before reaching for tissues to dab her eyes. Potter recounted:

Potter is facing charges of first- and second-degree manslaughter over Wright’s death. Joe Tamburino, a criminal defense attorney not affiliated with Potter’s case, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ex-police-officer-kim-potter-will-testify-in-trial-over-daunte-wright-shooting-defense-attorney-says">explained</a> the charges last month.
“In both cases, we’re dealing with recklessness or negligence. And for the first-degree manslaughter, that means that there’s an underlying offense. In this case, they’re alleging misdemeanor mishandling of a firearm,” he said. “For the second-degree, they’re just stating that it is reckless or extreme negligence. So for the second one, they would have to show that Ms. Potter was extremely negligent when she did the act. For the first-degree, they would have to show not only was she negligent, but also, she did an underlying crime, meaning the misdemeanor mishandling of a weapon.”
The trial has at times focused on the justification for the level of force used against Wright, despite whether or not Potter intended to shoot him. Prosecution witness Seth Stoughton, a former police officer turned law professor, argued that Potter was not justified in using either her taser or her gun against Wright.
However, defense witness Stephen Ijames, a 40-year police veteran who trains officers in appropriate taser usage, testified that Potter’s use of a taser against Wright would have been justified. Ijames added that Potter would have been justified in shooting Wright had he won control of his vehicle from Sgt. Mychal Johnson.
Potter, who was a 26-year veteran of the Brooklyn Center police force, resigned days after shooting Wright. “I have loved every minute of being a police officer and serving this community to the best of my ability, but I believe it is in the best interest of the community, the department, and my fellow officers if I resign immediately,” she <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/kim-potter-police-officer-who-shot-daunte-wright-resigns">wrote</a> in a resignation letter.

A woman allegedly held at gunpoint by Daunte Wright released the victim impact statement she will never get to read in court last week.
The woman, who went unnamed, released her victim impact statement to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/kim-potter-trial-daunte-wright-victim-impact-statement">Fox News</a>. The statement is what she would have read in court had Wright stood trial for allegedly holding her at gunpoint and demanding the $820 she had saved for rent. Wright died on April 11 after former Minneapolis police officer Kim Potter shot him while shouting “taser, taser, taser!”
“I had never stared into somebody’s eyes while begging to keep my life, while also having a gun pointed at my head,” the alleged victim told Fox News. “I have never gasped for air as much as I did when I had his hands wrapped around my neck.”
One evening in December 2019, a high school acquaintance dropped Wright off at the alleged victim’s house where they drank and smoked marijuana. The next morning, Wright held her at gunpoint demanding she hand over her rent money.
“I believe that both of these men deserve time in prison, probation after prison for this crime to be on their permanent records, mandatory psychiatric evaluations, anger management classes, chemical dependency classes and treatment and domestic violence classes,” she said, referring to the high school acquaintance and Wright. “The acts of crime they committed towards me. I feel they are a danger to society and will continue to do the same things to other people if they&#8217;re not punished for their crimes.”
“I would never wish anything bad upon another person or other people in my life, but I do wish that both of these men get the help they need as soon as possible,” she continued. “I never want to see or hear either of these men ever again. I also do not want to have to worry about whether or not they will send anybody after me or my family, in spite of them getting convicted for what they did.”
Potter is facing charges of first- and second-degree manslaughter after she shot and killed Wright during a traffic stop in April. Potter and several other police officers pulled Wright over for expired vehicle registration tags. While checking his ID, officers found out that Wright had a warrant out for his arrest in connection with the alleged robbery. The officers confronted Wright and attempted to detain him. Daunte Wright’s Alleged Robbery Victim Releases Testimony She Never Got To Give In Court

The Minnesota National Guard is prepared to assist the city of Brooklyn Center if &#8220;they are needed&#8221; regarding any reaction during the trial of former Minnesota police officer Kim Potter, who faces manslaughter charges over the shooting death of Daunte Wright following a traffic stop in April.
“The Minnesota National Guard has units that are trained and have been identified to be a reaction force in the event they are needed to protect lives, preserve property, and ensure people&#8217;s rights to protest peacefully,” Army Col. Scott Rohweder, director of operations, shared with <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/live-news/kim-potter-trial" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a> in a written statement on Thursday.
Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz announced on Wednesday the preparation of Guard personnel for the trial following a request made by the City of Brooklyn Center and Hennepin County.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we are prepared to ask members of the Minnesota National Guard to be available to support local law enforcement with the mission of allowing for peaceful demonstrations, keeping the peace, and ensuring public safety,” Walz said in a statement, according to <a href="https://kduz.com/2021/12/09/mn-national-guard-standing-by-during-potter-trial/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KDUZ-TV</a>.
The statement noted that the Minnesota National Guard &#8220;will not be proactively assuming posts throughout the Twin Cities. Should they be needed, Guard members will operate in support of local law enforcement.&#8221;
&#8220;The state will provide additional law enforcement resources, including the Minnesota State Patrol if a coordinated response to aid local law enforcement is necessary,&#8221; the statement continued.
Potter faces first and second-degree manslaughter charges in the shooting death of Wright. The former officer has claimed she meant to grab her taser to keep Wright from fleeing during a traffic stop, but instead drew her handgun and fired a round into his chest.

Joe Tamburino, a criminal defense attorney not affiliated with Potter’s case, explained the charges Potter is facing to <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/kim-potter-trial-daunte-wright-killing/">CBS News</a>.
“In both cases, we&#8217;re dealing with recklessness or negligence. And for the first-degree manslaughter, that means that there&#8217;s an underlying offense. In this case, they&#8217;re alleging misdemeanor mishandling of a firearm,” he said. “For the second-degree, they&#8217;re just stating that it is reckless or extreme negligence. So for the second one, they would have to show that Ms. Potter was extremely negligent when she did the act. For the first-degree, they would have to show not only was she negligent, but also, she did an underlying crime, meaning the misdemeanor mishandling of a weapon.”
Potter was one of several police officers who stopped Wright on April 11 over expired registration tags. Authorities discovered that Wright had an open warrant out for his arrest while running his information, then attempted to detain him.
Video of the traffic stop shows Wright struggling with officers as they attempt to cuff him. Wright slips an officer’s grip and gets back into his car. Potter then shoots Wright once after yelling, “taser!” Former Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon, who along with Potter resigned after the incident, said that the shooting was accidental and that Potter believed she held her taser when she shot Wright.

Potter, who was a 26-year veteran of the police force, resigned days after the incident. “I have loved every minute of being a police officer and serving this community to the best of my ability, but I believe it is in the best interest of the community, the department, and my fellow officers if I resign immediately,” she <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/kim-potter-police-officer-who-shot-daunte-wright-resigns">wrote</a> in a resignation letter.
She was also <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ex-police-officer-kim-potter-charged-in-fatal-shooting-of-daunte-wright">charged</a> with second-degree manslaughter in April. The first-degree manslaughter <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ex-officer-kim-potter-facing-more-serious-charge-in-fatal-daunte-wright-shooting">charge</a> came months later in September after Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison took over the prosecution against Potter.
“In taking over the prosecution of this case from the Washington County Attorney, Attorney General Ellison pledged to conduct a thorough review of the evidence and make an independent decision on the level of charges,” Ellison said in a statement at the time. “After conducting that review — which included consulting with an expert in police use of force — Attorney General Ellison confirmed that the original second-degree manslaughter charge is appropriate, but also concluded that an upgraded charge of first-degree manslaughter is warranted.”

Ex-Police Officer Kim Potter Will Testify In Trial Over Daunte Wright Shooting, Defense Attorney Says

Former Brooklyn Center Police Department Officer Kim Potter, who shouted “taser” moments before fatally shooting a 20-year-old man who appeared to be resisting arrest according to video of the altercation, will <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ex-police-officer-kim-potter-charged-in-fatal-shooting-of-daunte-wright">stand trial for manslaughter</a> at the end of this year, a Hennepin County judge said Monday. 
According to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/05/17/kim-potter-hearing-daunte-wright/">The Washington Post</a>, Hennepin County Judge Regina Chu said that Potter will be scheduled for trial in December in connection with Daunte Wright’s death. Potter, who served on the police force for 26 years before resigning, was charged with second-degree manslaughter mere days after the fateful altercation with Wright. 
“I do find that there’s probable cause to support the charge against the defendant, Ms. Potter,” said Chu in a virtual hearing Monday, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/daunte-wright-kim-potter-court-hearing-3029f3f876c9cfde6fe5cd0f64da7b37">reports</a> the Associated Press. 
Bodycam footage of the incident, released shortly after the shooting, showed Potter shouting “taser” several times before shooting Wright with her service weapon. Moments later, Potter was heard proclaiming, “Sh*t, I just shot him,&#8221; and the car Wright had been in driving continued moving forward before crashing down the street. 
As The Daily Wire previously reported, an investigator with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension examined Potter’s duty belt and “saw that the handgun is holstered on the right side of the belt and her Taser is on the left side. The grips or handles of both the gun and Taser face Potter’s rear,” according to the county attorney’s office. “The Taser is yellow with a black grip. Also, the Taser is set in a straight-draw position, meaning Potter would have to use her left hand to pull the Taser out of its holster, according to the complaint,” said the attorney’s office.
As the AP noted, a second-degree manslaughter charge does not require intent: “The charge — which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison — can be applied in circumstances where a person is suspected of causing a death by ‘culpable negligence’ that creates an unreasonable risk and consciously takes chances to cause a death.”
After the shooting, former Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon told reporters that he believed Potter intended to fire her taser, based on the video evidence. He resigned the following day along with Potter, who said she was doing so in the best interest of the community.
&#8220;I have loved every minute of being a police officer and serving this community to the best of my ability, but I believe it is in the best interest of the community, the department, and my fellow officers if I resign immediately,&#8221; she said.
Per Minnesota law, Potter faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted and a maximum fine of $20,000.
“Certain occupations carry an immense responsibility and none more so than a sworn police officer,” Imran Ali, the assistant criminal division chief for Washington County and director of the Major Crime Unit, said in a written statement. “With that responsibility comes a great deal of discretion and accountability. We will vigorously prosecute this case and intend to prove that Officer Potter abrogated her responsibility to protect the public when she used her firearm rather than her taser. Her action caused the unlawful killing of Mr. Wright and she must be held accountable.”

Waters&#8217; comment came after a week during which she was in the spotlight for repeatedly making comments about the Derek Chauvin trial that many deemed inappropriate and inflammatory, including the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/waters-attacks-judge-way-off-track-not-credible-to-tie-me-to-appeal-gop-distracting-from-qanon" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">judge</a> who presided over the trial.
After traveling to Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, in the wake of Daunte Wright&#8217;s death in an officer-involved shooting earlier this month, Waters <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/democrat-maxine-waters-on-if-derek-chauvin-is-acquitted-get-more-confrontational-on-the-street" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">told</a> a crowd, &#8220;We’re looking for a guilty verdict. We’re looking for a guilty verdict. And we’re looking to see if all of this [inaudible] that took place and has been taking place after they saw what happened to George Floyd.&#8221;
&#8220;If nothing does not happen, then we know, that we’ve got to not only stay in the street, but we’ve got to fight for justice, but I am very hopeful and I hope that we’re going to get a verdict that will say guilty, guilty, guilty. And if we don’t, we cannot go away,&#8221; she added. Regarding what protesters should do if they do not get the verdict that they want, Waters replied, “Well, we got to stay on the street.&#8221;
&#8220;And we’ve got to get more active. [We’ve] got to get more confrontational. [We’ve] got to make sure that they know we mean business,&#8221; she added.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) introduced a bill to formally <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/democrats-block-censure-holding-maxine-waters-accountable-for-alleged-incitement-remarks" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">censure</a> Waters for her remarks, but House Democrats blocked it.
Waters also claimed after Daunte Wright&#8217;s death that doing anything as a black person is potentially dangerous. &#8220;It is our unfortunate reality that driving while Black, running while Black, walking while Black, bird watching while Black, &amp; quite frankly – doing anything that any other person could do, but doing it while Black, too often ends in death. #DaunteWright,&#8221; Waters wrote.

Wright was killed April 11 when police tried to arrest him after a traffic stop. Wright had a warrant out for his arrest for failing to appear at a court hearing regarding a misdemeanor weapons charge. When officers were trying to arrest him, he pulled away and attempted to enter his car, according to a summary of the fatal altercation from the Washington County Attorney’s Office.
Former police officer Kim Potter, who has since been formally charged with second-degree manslaughter, was arrested approximately 24 hours after the city announced she had submitted a letter of resignation.

Ben Crump is an American attorney who specializes in civil rights and personal injury cases, such as wrongful death lawsuits. In recent years, his practice has increasingly focused on accusations of police brutality.
As a result, Crump routinely appears as one of the central figures in high-profile cases regarding alleged police brutality and so-called “systemic racism.”
However, time after time, Crump has — either intentionally or unintentionally — spread misinformation regarding his cases, often with disastrous consequences.
Here is a list of times when Crump effectively promoted misinformation regarding high-profile cases of alleged &#8220;racial violence.&#8221;
Michael Brown
In 2014, Crump helped propagate the false “hands up, don’t shoot!” narrative following the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.
&#8220;Regardless of the decision of the grand jury, this will be a defining moment in the history of the state of Missouri,&#8221; <a href="https://archive.ph/20141119005842/http://www.ksdk.com/story/news/local/2014/11/13/michael-baden-grand-jury-testimony/18959707/#selection-4347.0-4351.125">said</a> Crump, while it was being determined whether charges should be filed against Ferguson Officer Darren Wilson.
Crump also said at the time that he and others believed &#8220;there is evidence that shows Michael Brown had his hands up.&#8221; He was asked if there&#8217;s any doubt, and Crump responded, &#8220;there&#8217;s no doubt about that.&#8221;
Barack Obama’s Department of Justice, headed by Attorney General Eric Holder, decided that this version of events was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/haworth-biden-kamala-ignore-obama-biden-administrations-own-findings">untrue</a>, finding in its exhaustive investigation of the case that witness accounts and forensic evidence overwhelmingly indicated that Brown did not hold up his hands and surrender.
“As detailed in its famous <a href="https://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.documentcloud.org/documents/1681212/doj-report-on-shooting-of-michael-brown.pdf">final report</a>, Obama-Biden administration ultimately concluded that all the available evidence painted an entirely different story than the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-partisan/wp/2015/03/16/lesson-learned-from-the-shooting-of-michael-brown/">racially charged narrative</a> that sparked the Ferguson protests and riots. The administration found that evidence indicated that Brown assaulted Officer Wilson, attempted to steal his firearm, and then charged at him,” reported <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/haworth-biden-kamala-ignore-obama-biden-administrations-own-findings">The Daily Wire</a>.
Breonna Taylor
Weeks after <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/myths-misconceptions-about-the-breonna-taylor-case">Breonna Taylor</a> was “shot and killed by plainclothes police officers who raided her Louisville, Kentucky, home” in March 2020, Crump tweeted, “Louisville Police fatally shot #BreonnaTaylor. They had the wrong address AND their real suspect was already in custody. 2 months later, no one has been held accountable for her death…but we will change that!”

As noted by The Daily Wire, “the post contained at least four incorrect or misleading statements about the case that still influence the national discussion today.”
The officers who raided Breonna’s home were not at the wrong address, the purpose of the raid was to find evidence and not to arrest “their real suspect,” they did knock before entering the apartment, neither Walker nor Taylor were in bed when police entered the apartment, and Taylor was not shot eight times.
George Floyd
After the death of George Floyd, Crump called for “first-degree murder charges” to be leveled against Derek Chauvin.

In <a href="https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/609.185">Minnesota</a>, first-degree murder requires both intent and premeditation, meaning that Crump believes that Chauvin set out that day planning to kill George Floyd.
Crump made this claim in a piece for <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/may/29/george-floyd-death-benjamin-crump-jasmine-rand">The Guardian</a> in May 2020, writing, “The video evidence clearly shows that the officers acted with the intent to kill and with premeditation. Floyd told the officers he could not breathe 12 times, including within the first few seconds of the video.”
Video evidence showed that Floyd complained of breathing difficulties both while they attempted to place him in the police car, and when he was detained on the ground outside the car.
Jacob Blake
Sharing initial footage, Crump reacted to the shooting of Jacob Blake.
“Wow. This Black man was shot several times in the back by [Kenosha Police] today. He was getting into his car after apparently breaking up a fight between two women. He’s in critical condition now. We demand JUSTICE!” Crump tweeted.

According to an audio recording of the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-authorities-release-the-911-recording-that-jacob-blakes-ex-girlfriend-made-to-police">911 call</a> that was made, Jacob Blake’s ex-girlfriend, Laquisha Booker, “reported that Jacob Blake would not give her back the keys to her rental vehicle and she was afraid he was going to take that vehicle and crash it. She reported he had done that before. So now police know there’s a vehicle in dispute, Jacob Blake already has the keys, and the concern is will he crash that vehicle in an effort to leave.”
According to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2020/08/28/this-is-why-jacob-blake-had-a-warrant-out-for-his-arrest/">New York Post</a>, Blake had an open arrest warrant at the time for felony sexual assault, with Blake’s ex-girlfriend alleging that he “used his finger to sexually assault her, sniffed it and said, ‘Smells like you’ve been with other men.’”
After violently resisting arrest, Blake was shot while reaching into his car, and later admitted that he was in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-wisconsin-doj-finds-jacob-blake-had-weapon-on-floorboard-of-car">possession of a knife</a>.
Regardless of the facts of the case, riots ensued in Kenosha, Wisconsin, causing damage <a href="https://www.kenoshanews.com/news/local/damage-due-to-rioting-unrest-in-kenosha-tops-50-million-2-000-guard-assisted-here/article_26473ec9-c08a-5490-9d09-cc2b840b65f1.html">estimated to exceed</a> $50 million.

Crump claimed that the reportedly accidental shooting of Daunte Wright — the man killed after resisting police who were attempting to arrest him on <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/daunte-wright-had-outstanding-warrant-for-attempted-aggravated-robbery-when-he-was-killed">charges</a> related to an armed robbery attempt — was deliberate. The officer who shot Wright now faces second-degree manslaughter charges.

Rising to address the congregation, Omar began by issuing an Arabic greeting and extolling Al Sharpton. &#8220;Thank you, Reverend Al Sharpton, for being here, and for that beautiful eulogy,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Most of us in this room, including myself, look at you as a guardian, and are blessed to be in your presence.&#8221;
&#8220;And may Daunte Wright serve as a guardian for all of us,&#8221; Omar continued. &#8220;But as a member of the Congressional Black Caucus — as one of the youngest and newest members of the Congressional Black Caucus — I also have guardians: Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and our chairwoman, Joyce Beatty, serve as guardians for me and many of my colleagues.&#8221;

An emotional Omar went on to read the resolution of congressional condolences filed by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) on behalf of Wright, which quoted portions of the Book of Revelation in the New Testament. She also presented Wright&#8217;s parents with an American flag that had been flown over the U.S. Capitol in Wright&#8217;s memory.
Riots erupted in Minneapolis following the officer-involved death of Wright, who was killed April 11 when police tried to arrest him after a traffic stop. Wright, 20, had a warrant out for his arrest for a misdemeanor weapons charge. When officers were trying to arrest him, he pulled away and attempted to enter his car, according to a summary of the fatal altercation from the Washington County Attorney’s Office.
Former police officer Kim Potter, who has since been formally charged with second-degree manslaughter, was arrested approximately 24 hours after the city announced she had submitted a letter of resignation.
As The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ex-police-officer-kim-potter-charged-in-fatal-shooting-of-daunte-wright" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">reported</a>:
<blockquote>The criminal complaint against Potter states that she pulled her Glock 9mm handgun with her right hand, and proceeded to point it at Wright and say she would tase him, <a href="https://www.co.washington.mn.us/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=3222">according</a> to the Washington County Attorney’s Office. Within seconds, Potter said “taser” three times and fired a single round from her gun into Wright, who said, “ah, he shot me.” After firing the gun once, Potter proclaimed, “Sh*t, I just shot him.”</blockquote>
Outrage also erupted after a Columbus police officer fatally shot Ma&#8217;Khia Bryant, 16, after she apparently pulled a knife on another girl during a scuffle to which police were called to intervene. Video <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/video-emerges-of-makhia-bryant-before-shooting" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">emerged</a> after initial reports that depict Bryant yelling “I’m going to stab the f*** out of you, b****,” as she lunged toward the girl before she was shot.
