Love is a deep and profound concept, both at an individual level and in society at large. Though a marriage based on companionship and attraction was not a readily accepted idea until, arguably, the Victorian era, the first marriage ceremony took place over 4,000 years ago. The evolving and historical practice of marriage — and love’s role in it — is perhaps most easily mapped through literature, as it reflects societal norms of its time. To name a few, both Plato (428-348 BC) and Aristotle (384-322 BC) parsed thoughts on love, the book of Numbers tells of Zimri and Cozbi’s story (and subsequent demise), William Shakespeare constructed an entire play around star-crossed lovers with “Romeo and Juliet” (1597), C.S. Lewis drew on the Greeks and Christian commentators&#8217; thoughts to describe the types of love in “The Four Loves” (1960), and the “Twilight” series spent 274 weeks on the New York Times best-seller list in the early 2000s.
The stories of star-crossed lovers — Zimri and Cozbi, Romeo and Juliet among them — have enticed people to believe and even engage in relationships set up for failure, usually in the name of passion. After all, no records document Zimri and Cozbi as married, and Romeo and Juliet knew each other for all of 24 hours before their marriage ceremony. But what of relationships set up for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/show/success" target="_blank" rel="noopener">success</a>? Vampire Edward and human Bella certainly seemed to be on a star-crossed path headed for doom, but they took matters into their own hands, setting themselves up for success. They found a way to make their relationship work “till death do us part” — or, in their case, for the long haul of immortality.
In more recent years, Dr. Jordan B. Peterson has contributed to history’s collection of tales on love and marriage, the most obvious of which being <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/show/success" target="_blank" rel="noopener">his series “Marriage”</a> in which he draws on both his clinical and personal experiences. In it, he teaches how to avoid a star-crossed path and, instead, pursue one that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/show/success" target="_blank" rel="noopener">leads to fulfillment</a>. Love is a complex notion. It takes a brilliant mind to discuss the role of one’s values in the act of love, to acknowledge the extent to which it affects consciousness, and to analyze how love can be applied practically in life. As an acclaimed clinical psychologist, author, educator, and Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto, Dr. Peterson is that mind. Yet he is not of mind only. He is one of heart. Peterson approaches the subject of love as a father and husband, having married his wife in 1989 (two years before earning his PhD in clinical psychology). Even after all he has accomplished in his career, he still proclaims his marriage, his intimate relationship, to be the best part of his life.
You can divide your life into thirds: an intimate relationship (that is, marriage), family, and career — according to Peterson’s rule of thumb. In the present day, society generally views the trajectory of love between significant others as one which culminates in marriage. He believes a “profound and properly integrated and oriented intimacy” is found in the state of marriage, with love being a beautiful and foundational element to it. And he addresses love as both a verb and a noun. Merriam-Webster defines love as a verb meaning “to hold dear; to feel passion, devotion, or tenderness for; to take pleasure in; to touch or handle in a tender or loving manner.” The noun “love” is defined, “as in affection; darling; liking.” Essentially, marriage is an opportunity to act out love reciprocally in relation to the person with whom you have fallen in love.

<h3>A Permeated State</h3>
Love is a “grace, a gift of God,” and when you fall in love, you experience what it is like to care for someone and receive care in return. When you enter into marriage, you engage in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/show/success" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an act of faith</a>. In a marriage, you are given an opportunity, a chance to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/show/success" target="_blank" rel="noopener">arrange your life</a> with the person you have fallen in love. Then the “state of love” permeates the relationship and all that you do together.
<h3>Continual</h3>
Your conscience is an indicator of behavior. One way of learning how to pay attention to your conscience (i.e., behavior) is by devoting yourself to another person within the confines of marriage. In marriage, your conscience becomes an indicator of behavior in relationship to your partner in the long run. Since you will be with your husband or wife for years of your life, you have to treat them in a manner that is “reciprocal and productive, that grows positively over decades.” A productive, positive, decades-long relationship is made up of moment-to-moment interactions, and it is from these moments that continual love blossoms in a relationship. And you have the opportunity to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/show/success" target="_blank" rel="noopener">improve yourself</a> in relation to your partner.
<h3>An Infinite Wellspring Of Mystery</h3>
When you fall in love with someone, Peterson explains that you see an infinite wellspring of mystery. It is granted as a gift, a gift you are willing to devote yourself wholeheartedly. Together, you can foster that infinite wellspring to continually pour forth. Sometimes, people think they are <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/show/success" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bored with their partner</a>, but Peterson clarifies this, explaining that they are usually bored because of what they have forced the other person to become or because of their own lack of creative imagination on the intimate front. After all, people are infinite mysteries.
<h3>The Precondition For Marriage</h3>
Falling in love with someone is the precondition for marriage. You find them attractive, then you fall in love — both of which Peterson says are worthy of gratefulness. Your long-term partner is significantly more interesting than any plethora of short-term, shallow relationships, and life with an intimate relationship (marriage) is far more fulfilling than walking through life alone. The caveat? Living together is not commitment enough because “trying someone out” before marrying them — the equivalent of giving them a trial run — still allows for an option to leave. True commitment begins when you formally and publicly ally and bind yourselves <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/show/success" target="_blank" rel="noopener">together</a>.
<h3>Support During The Worst Times Of Life</h3>
Once married, you will go through the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/show/success" target="_blank" rel="noopener">worst times</a> of your life with your husband or wife. But you are better situated to survive those times with a companion who loves you. When the storms come, you are part of a joint arc because you are committed to each other in a fundamental manner. You can share in contending with the harsh realities of all dimensions of life.
In the end, you can be oriented toward love and life more abundant. But how do you know you are in love? How do you know you can be married? How do you know you are ready? Peterson’s answer is: You don’t know. You decide. That is the act of faith.

<blockquote>CNN is laying off roughly 200 employees, or about 6% of its workforce, part of a plan Chief Executive Mark Thompson says will shift the cable TV brand’s emphasis toward digital growth and prepare it to launch a streaming service.</blockquote>
Who&#8217;s going to subscribe to that? As the guy who is a co-founder of a massive streaming service, DailyWire+, I&#8217;m just wondering who is going to be a paid subscriber for CNN&#8217;s streaming offering? Who wants to do that?
The Journal continues:
<blockquote>The changes at CNN are part of the organization’s continuing response “to profound and irreversible shifts in the way audiences in America and around the world consume news,” Thompson wrote in a memo to staff Thursday.</blockquote>
Viewership is down dramatically for pretty much all of the major cable networks. MSNBC&#8217;s viewership was down 62% from its peak in the fourth quarter of 2020. Fox News is down by 27%, but CNN was down 74% from its peak in quarter four of 2020.
CNN is trying to shift their various hosts around.

Tim Burchett (R-TN), “I was at the White House covering the first Trump administration when they had rioting outside of the White House. I mean, that was covered on CNN. This is not Fox. Congressman, you can‘t just spin a tale and pull the wool over people‘s eyes. This is CNN. This is the news. We are asking you to come on and tell the truth.”
“And that’s why more people are watching the Cartoon Network, SpongeBob reruns right now, Jim,” Burchett fired back, continuing, “Look, I left the White House during a riot. My life was threatened. My life has been threatened within the last few weeks, yet there‘s no coverage of that. And you all continue this, this narrative of attacking Trump. You just can‘t stand the fact that he won and that America spoke.”
Jim Acosta told CNN that they couldn’t ship him to the middle of the night; he might quit. CNN answered: Would you, though? What can we do to make you quit? Anything?
According to <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/01/23/media/jim-acosta-may-exit-cnn-rather-than-accept-move-to-graveyard-shift/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The New York Post</a>:
<blockquote>Jim Acosta is threatening to quit CNN rather than accept a reassigned time slot that would see him move from late mornings to the graveyard shift, according to a report.
Acosta’s days at CNN may be numbered as the former White House correspondent known for his combative coverage of President Trump could be heading for the exits rather than accept a move that would see him broadcast a nightly show starting at midnight, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Another CNN staffer told Fox News Digital that Acosta was “getting hosed.”</blockquote>

The awards show is scheduled to take place Friday, February 7, at the Avalon Theater in Hollywood.

The Golden Age of Donald Trump is officially upon us, ushering in a cultural shift that seemed unimaginable just a few weeks ago.

Because, of course, those are the only genders that exist. 
Trump’s order also seeks to protect women from the dangerous results of radical gender ideology — results like biological males dominating women in sports like swimming, track … or basketball. 
When “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/videos/lady-ballers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lady Ballers</a>” came out on DailyWire+ in 2023, the message, while funny, was also a sad statement on the state of our culture. Trans-identifying men playing against women was a serious issue, and the legacy media and Big Tech companies were taking extreme measures to censor and downplay conservatives’ concerns on the topic. But now, with Trump’s victory and ascension to the White House, conservatives are successfully pushing back against those extreme gender ideas, and “Lady Ballers” can be viewed as a funny reflection of how crazy things became because of radical gender ideology. 
Thankfully, that craziness won’t be sticking around, and it’s easier to laugh about it now. “Lady Ballers” perfectly and hilariously encapsulates the insanity of men claiming to be women and playing in women’s sports. 
The film tells the story of a down-on-his-luck former high school basketball coach named Rob, played by Daily Wire co-founder Jeremy Boreing, who will do anything to win — in this case, teaching his team of men radical modern gender theory and leading them to identify as women in order to brutally dominate multiple women’s sports.
After coming out on DailyWire+ last year, the movie quickly received rave reviews from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes, where it still sits at an 88% rating.

I am a woman with no breasts. I haven’t had a normal female body since I was 20-years-old, but it’s not because of a tragic accident, birth defect, or cancer. My body was born healthy, my breasts grew fine, and in most ways I am a normal 28-year-old. As developmentally appropriate, I dream of finding a mate, getting married, and having children, but this natural ambition has been delayed because instead of learning the necessary life skills to mature into adulthood, my teens and early twenties were spent in hell.
I grew up in a spiritual body modification cult: transgenderism.
A quirky tomboy on the autism spectrum, I didn’t dress or act like other girls my age, and with my emotional struggles with severe depression and anxiety, I believed I would make a bad mother and never wanted children.
In fact, I thought I made a terrible girl in general. I never wore makeup or felt pretty, and I related only to male characters in the media. Puberty, along with social awkwardness and alienating idiosyncrasies, was rough and lonesome. By the time I was 14, my Tumblr blog was my sole source of connection.
True Christian families would have provided more patience, love, and acceptance, but my father was not a Godly man. Emotionally weak and tyrannical, my father raged and tormented me for most of my adolescence, calling me worthless, disgusting, and unwanted. While he screamed and laughed I locked myself in my room, in tears. Though Catholic and compassionate, my mother failed to protect me, and the abuse endured.
Besides the hidden abuse, my Midwestern family was of typical democratic persuasion, supporting increased public school funding, feminism, and gay marriage. Along with my dad’s abusive messages, I absorbed Leftist views, and when joining Tumblr was ecstatic to participate in social justice causes like Black Lives Matter, smashing the patriarchy, and of course, queering one’s gender.

I was 15 when I came out as nonbinary, a revelation that felt like my androgyny and nonconformity were finally appreciated. Tumblr activists rejoiced. My Left-leaning advanced English teacher who ran the school’s Gay-Straight Alliance club validated my “genderqueer” identity, and my progressive peers sympathized with my unconventional appearance under the queer label.
In my naivety, I thought gender identity would free me from the conventional standards of femininity that I had always rejected. I wanted to be loved as an eccentric personality, not be the helpless female victim that both woke discourse and my father instilled was my destiny.
Though I was suicidal with untreated PTSD from childhood abuse, gender ideology and its well-intentioned but ignorant leftist champions taught me that distress around my body and identity meant I was trans, that gender dysphoria could only be cured through medicalization.
At my LGBTQ-inclusive college, my trans-identifying professor of “Sociology of Sexuality” groomed me into the body modification cult ritual of injecting testosterone. I was prescribed the steroid at 19 in a one hour appointment — the compassionate LGBT clinic nurse practitioner nodding along with the hoax that if a patient is suicidal with gender issues, they must urgently need hormones, not counseling which is slandered as “conversion therapy.”
The “life-saving care” predictably caused a mental breakdown as my body masculinized and I mentally deteriorated. Then, after only seven months of HRT, I was approved for surgery. At 20, before I was legally old enough to buy alcohol, my breasts were sliced off and thrown in the trash. It would be two more years of trauma living as a trans-identified “gay man” before I would be correctly diagnosed with PTSD and realize that I was never a boy, just a wounded girl. I was always meant to be a woman. At 22 I began detransitioning, and I wasn’t alone.

Since 2019, I and other detransitioners like <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/author/chloe-cole" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chloe Cole</a>, Prisha Moseley, and Ritchie Herron have blown the whistle on transgender “health.” Victims have found their voices, exposed their scars, and formed coalitions across the world via the free speech app X.
Detransitioners connect with concerned parents, professionals, and journalists in independent media who are mortified to learn that the unthinkable has happened in Western nations–brainwashing, mutilation, and sterilization of mentally ill children and vulnerable young adults.
How did liberalism cannibalize itself so abhorrently?
Like the currently trans-identified, detransitioners were once quirky individualists who believed in the progressive promise of a free and just society, one where the disenfranchised were accepted, helped, and raised up into a diverse rainbow of love and tolerance. We advocated for bodily autonomy, mental health awareness, and voted blue no matter what, just like good, responsible citizens should. So we thought.
The Left failed its vulnerable. It lied to autistic, confused, mentally ill teens telling them their bodies were wrong, and society was somehow to blame. The Left made it “transphobic” for a therapist to question a mentally ill patient’s irrational beliefs, but “inclusive” for educators to teach that “male” and “female” are outdated and hurtful.
As I awoke to the horrors of what was done to my body in the name of progress, I also awoke to the callous nihilism of the Left overall. Queer ideology is anti-progress, anti-human, anti-reality. Through grueling years of daily therapy and healing in my mid twenties I not only became ex-trans, but ex-Left. As I studied interpersonal abuse dynamics like those I grew up in with my dad, I saw the same pattern of manipulation and gaslighting occur from the Left when my friends or I spoke of detransition. Immediately upon realizing the illusions we suffered, in the eyes of our former comrades, we become Right-wing bigots, subhuman.
For the raw, comprehensive story of why girls transition and how to detransition and recover, I have written a memoir releasing in late 2025, “Surviving the Trans Myth.” Detransitioners take healing from the biggest medical scandal of our time into our own hands, as the love from leftist institutions evaporates once their facade is exposed.
The Left claims to care about trauma victims, but detransitioners prove otherwise. I have tried to publish articles and do interviews with leftist outlets but have been met with worse than ignorance–avoidance, denial, apathy.
Once an emotionally-dysregulated queer activist who thought Trump would slaughter the trans population, I was hurt over the cultist&#8217;s “conservative” accusations until I realized some things are worth conserving.
My body was.
When I was approached by Turning Point USA Productions to share my story in a mainstream conservative documentary, that old leftist fear was replaced with newfound strength to fight for what was left of my body–my heart, mind, and soul. The Daily Wire film, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/videos/identity-crisis">Identity Crisis</a> rawly captures my medical abuse, and exposes the outcomes of the gender snake oil the Left sold.
The film explains the hydra of gender ideology and its history, exhibiting how it crept into every institution and exploded into online youth culture, while following personal stories of detransitioners’ struggle for self-acceptance, parents Adam Vena and Harrison Tinsely who lost custody of their sons for not affirming their trans identity, and professionals like Dr. Joe Burgo, a psychotherapist who despite being an expert on shame, cannot treat gender dysphoric patients without losing his license.
As for me, the night I watched <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/videos/identity-crisis">Identity Crisis</a> debut and saw my trauma on the big screen was a bittersweet coalescence of grief and gratitude.
Though I’ve moved on from the cult, nihilism, and mental illness, acknowledging the magnitude of loss will always create some self-doubt about fulfilling my dreams. After the film ended, I cried for the woman I could have been:
“I just want to be a normal woman. I want to have a normal, feminine, beautiful body. But I never will.”
My sexual organs were removed because nobody cared to help me process my childhood abuse that made me direct hatred inward. I am thankful to be the woman I am, but this was all unnecessary.
If there is one lesson I’ve learned from leaving the Left, it’s that the Right must step up where the Left has failed. Conservatives have an opportunity to offer a counter-narrative that prioritizes safeguarding children and promoting thoughtful, evidence-based approaches to gender issues.
Here are a few steps the Right can take:

<li>Advocate for Responsible Policies: Speak on legislation that ensures patients receive thorough mental health evaluations before accessing medical interventions. Protect parental rights while fostering environments that encourage open dialogue rather than ideological conformity.</li>
<li>Support Detransitioners: Create spaces where detransitioners can share their stories without fear of judgment or erasure. Acknowledge their experiences as survivors and offer healing from whatever toolkit you have.</li>
<li>Promote Mental Health: Address the root causes of gender distress — including social isolation, sexual confusion, and mental health issues — rather than colluding with the transition placebo.</li>
</ul>
Detransition is a testament to human resilience and the desire for growth even in the face of immense pain and loss. My story is not just a cautionary tale but a call to action. It is a plea for compassion, responsibility, and courage from all sides of the political spectrum.
The fight for a healthier, stronger, and more truthful life starts with us.

Peterson that he was “tricked into” allowing one of his sons to undergo gender procedures, saying his child was “killed” by the “woke mind virus.”
Musk sat down with Peterson for an interview that covered a range of topics and was streamed live on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/episode/dr-peterson-x-elon-musk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DailyWire+</a> and X. During one segment, Peterson and Musk discussed children being targeted by doctors with gender procedures, with both men agreeing that the practice is “evil.” Musk called “gender-affirming care,” the Left’s description of the procedures, “a terrible euphemism.”
“It’s really child mutilation and sterilization,” Musk said. “It’s evil. You’re taking kids who are far below the age of consent.”
“It’s very possible for adults to manipulate children who are having an actual identity crisis into believing that they are the wrong gender,” he added.
“Why are you willing to make this an issue?” Peterson asked Musk, which led to the billionaire entrepreneur opening up about his son, Xavier, who struggled with gender dysphoria and now identifies as a girl.
“Well, it happened to one of my older boys,” the Tesla and SpaceX owner replied. “I was essentially tricked into signing documents for one of my older boys, Xavier. This was really before I had any understanding of what was going on, and we had COVID going on, so there was a lot of confusion. And I was told Xavier might commit suicide.”

“I was tricked into doing this. It wasn’t explained to me that puberty blockers are actually just sterilization drugs,” he added. “I lost my son, essentially. They call it ‘deadnaming’ for a reason. The reason they call it ‘deadnaming’ is because your son is dead, so my son, Xavier, is dead, killed by the woke mind virus.”

With more than 10 million illegal crossings recorded since President Biden and Vice President Harris took office, the southern border faces an unprecedented crisis.
In a new documentary, The Daily Wire’s Kassy Akiva shows the chaos firsthand.
Akiva embedded with Texas State troopers and toured the southern border by police cruiser, helicopter, and airboat. “Mexico’s Door,” now streaming on DailyWire+, brings viewers along for the ride, and highlights Texas’s ongoing efforts to protect the border after the Biden-Harris administration failed to do so.
While in Eagle Pass, Texas, Akiva met with a migrant whose wife gave birth just after swimming across the Rio Grande, a rancher who has lost hundreds of thousands of dollars because migrants keep cutting his fences, and members of the Texas National Guard and state law enforcement officers on the front lines of defending America’s border.

‘Mexico’s Door’ was filmed after Governor Greg Abbott ordered Texas state troopers and the Texas National Guard to secure the southern border under <a href="https://gov.texas.gov/operationlonestar">Operation Lone Star</a>.
Among the officers Akiva meets are Texas State Trooper Jacklyn Gooding, who patrols the border in search of human smugglers and illegal immigrants. Gooding recounts arresting a smuggler last April who was wanted for murder.
“It was a pursuit when I tried to stop the car initially, and we were able to capture the two individuals that were involved in the smuggling event, as well as all the undocumented individuals,” Gooding says. “The suspects were armed at the time: both of them had firearms, and the driver had an active warrant for murder out of Louisiana.”

Akiva encounters a Venezuelan migrant behind the razor wire fence who illegally swam across the Rio Grande while carrying a three-year-old. The migrant says the child belonged to his wife who went into labor and was transported to a hospital right after reaching the shore.
Lt. Chris Olivarez from the Texas Department of Public Safety tells Akiva pregnant mothers commonly wait to cross the border until they are about to go into labor, to ensure their children become citizens.
“To be that far in your pregnancy, they have to know more or less when she is going to give birth in order to cross on this side and cross here in the United States,” Olivarez says. “We see that a lot—where a lot of pregnant females who are coming across, they will wait, usually when they are about to give birth. Then they’ll cross into the United States and they’ll have the baby that same day. or they’ll have it right at the river as they are crossing.”

Olivarez added that migrants also use children in hopes that the troopers will be more willing to assist them in entering the country.
“They use the children in those types of situations because they know there is a human side to us,” Olivarez said.
Olivarez takes Akiva through the 47-acre Shelby Park, which was a focal point in the struggle between Texas and the Biden-Harris administration before Abbott took control of the park, barring federal agents from entry.
Apprehensions of illegal migrants in the <a href="https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/stats/southwest-land-border-encounters-by-component">Del Rio sector</a>, which includes Shelby Park, were at a high of 71,050 in December. It dropped to 16,710 in January when Abbott took control.
Thirteen Republican governors <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/republican-govs-back-texas-at-border-were-doing-the-job-of-the-federal-government">joined</a> Abbott at Shelby Park in February to support the governor’s ongoing feud with the Biden-Harris administration. Fourteen states have sent personnel to help Texas secure its border.

Before the State of Texas controlled Shelby Park, the area saw about two thousand illegal border crossings a day, with many migrants swimming across the river and turning themselves in to Customs and Border Protection. But with Texas personnel on the scene, migrants are arrested for illegally trespassing into the park, told to swim back, or wait in hopes that border patrol picks them up. The area now averages about less than one encounter a week, according to Olivarez.
Akiva takes an airboat tour of the Rio Grande with Florida and Texas state troopers, who say the border around the area of Eagle Pass averages about one drowning a day. Olivarez says Texas has stepped up the effort to prevent water crossings by putting up barriers, while the federal government has been reluctant to do so.
While on the boat, Akiva’s team spots a raft staged on the shore of the Mexican side of the Rio Grande, presumably to transport migrants. Mexican troops removed the raft after they were alerted by Texas law enforcement.
From a helicopter, Akiva spots hundreds of thousands of pieces of clothing that migrants take off after they finish their swim and place over the razor wire fences to avoid being cut while climbing over.
Akiva concludes her trip by meeting Texas rancher <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/border-crisis-texas-rancher-says-migrant-invasion-of-his-border-property-has-cost-him-400k">Wayne King</a>, who says he lost over $400,000 from migrants cutting thousands of holes in his fence, allowing his African and Indian exotic animals meant for recreational hunting to escape.

“If they really wanted to do this right, why are they coming to my pastures?” King says. “Why are they destroying water troughs? Water lines, windmills, fences? Why are they doing that? Why don’t they just cross the bridge where they can get all of the government’s handouts and everything’s hunky dory?”
King, who lives in a house on the 8,200-acre ranch, says he’s been woken up by migrants in the middle of the night. He says he is “tickled to death” that Abbott has stepped up to secure the border.
“Abbott is doing his utmost best to protect us here on the border,” he says. “It’s just crazy. I mean, but what else do you want to call it when our state is trying to protect us, but yet our federal government is trying to stop the state from protecting us.”

Born into lowly circumstances, he came without fanfare, without flair, without majesty of royalty. Yet his coming fulfilled Old Testament prophecies that pronounced God would send a savior for the world — for every individual in every subsequent time period in every society. The birth story of Jesus has transcended time, and Dr. Jordan B. Peterson’s series, “The Gospels,” is evidence of that transcendence. 
To examine the birth of Jesus Christ is to assess the nativity story itself. Peterson and the scholars who join him at the table to read the words of the narrative that begins Jesus’ life and mission take up the task of expository discussion: They analyze the story’s personal and cultural implications, evaluate its historical and political context, and address how it applies to us today. The nativity story continues to draw us in, sometimes in ways we simply cannot explain — try as we might.

<h4>Mary and Joseph: Personal and Cultural Significance </h4>
“And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.” Luke 1:31-33
The birth story of Jesus involves several visits from angels: to Mary, with news of her pregnancy; to Joseph, in a dream with instructions to marry Mary; to shepherds, in a field with directives to find the baby. The greatest of stories, Jordan has said before, omit everyday, common material, but they include excitement — just as the Gospels exclude extraneous details around these angel visits. But the day-to-day happenings were still going right on in these people’s lives. By the time the angel visits Joseph, Mary has somehow already told him, even though they would have been supervised at all times. How? When? Afterward, Joseph had “considered these things,” but what, exactly, was he thinking? What overwhelming news this would have been for them both. 
Yet even in the midst of immensely life-changing, supernatural news, Mary “says ‘yes’ to the fact of the child,” Jordan notes. “There isn’t a deeper reflection of fundamental faith in the goodness of being and becoming than the decision a woman takes to throw herself wholeheartedly and without reservation into the relationship with her infant.” On a personal level, Mary embodies great faith in motherhood. More broadly, Mary’s attitude reflects that of a healthy culture: one that holds the image of mother and infant sacred. Without the values of maternal love, life, continuity, and sacrifice, a culture has no future. 
So, too, does Joseph accept the angel’s directions without question. This is not because the Gospels shy away from addressing doubt and disbelief, as Gregg Hurwitz points out. After all, “How much can you spring on one person at once?” Jordan posits. Joseph had resolved to send Mary away quietly, but he, instead, pushes any doubt or disbelief aside. Like Mary’s, Joseph’s faith as an individual is evident. But on a cultural level, his willingness to act in good faith creates a solid foundation for the family. 
<h4>The Birth of Jesus: Historical and Political Significance </h4>
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6
Context always matters — always. The time of Jesus’ birth is unmistakably significant to his life’s mission, which the group discusses at length. At his birth, the Roman emperor Caesar Augustus had come to be known as Divi Filius, a Latin phrase meaning “son of a god.” This is an undeniable mark of a hero story: the genuine God is born during a false god’s tyrannical rule. At the same time, many historians consider Augustus one of the greatest leaders in history. He is responsible for establishing the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of peace. During his reign and the years following, the Romans did not rebel and no outside forces attacked Rome. Considering this period of stability, Jesus is auspiciously born into a time his mission can be most fruitful. Undoubtedly, the Christian message was able to spread with astonishing speed. 
The true emperor where true peace will be found is born into a hidden location, and his coming is not announced to the masses. It is announced to those who shared a specific relationship with the prophets of the Old Testament: shepherds. But the choice of shepherds is significant beyond even the prophetic; it is significant in regards to the universal. The shepherds to whom the angel delivers the birth announcement would have been considered lowly because of their socioeconomic status. Christ’s birth, his mission, his salvific nature is universally salvific, intended for everyone.

Accompanying the angel who delivers the birth announcement to the shepherds comes “a company of the heavenly host” (Luke 2:13). The Hebrew defines this heavenly host as an “army.” Bishop Barron reminds the group that though emperors dominate the world with human armies, Christ will have ultimate dominion with a fierce, angelic, supernatural army. 
<h4>The Heavenly Host: Spiritual and Universal Significance</h4>
“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:11
What does this nativity story tell us about today? About ourselves? About this life — and the next? It tells us that Jesus — the giver of personal peace and worldly peace to come — brings hope, and he intended us to carry that eternal hope with us. 
The host of angels and shepherds signify the fullness of universal reconciliation: two extremes, above and below, connected together through Christ’s birth. Their angelic message proclaims, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” Jesus’ mission was to bring true peace, reconciling man to God through his eventual sacrifice. When glory is given to God, as Bishop Barron explains, peace suffuses personally, culturally, and universally. 
It is a story for us, one with the hope of peace and the promise of life.
