Christopher Nolan is doing a movie about &#8220;The Odyssey,&#8221; Homer&#8217;s epic poem, and he has cast Lupita Nyong&#8217;o as Helen of Troy — the face that launched a thousand ships, the most beautiful woman in the Greek world.
Lupita Nyong&#8217;o is a very good actress. However, let&#8217;s just say she doesn&#8217;t look Greek.
She doesn&#8217;t have any of the features that are traditionally associated with Helen of Troy. Helen is portrayed as having very, very fair skin, sometimes slightly darker hair, sometimes blond hair. So it doesn&#8217;t quite match. Some people are making all sorts of nasty comments about Lupita Nyong&#8217;o, this perfectly nice-looking lady, who is certainly a very good actress.
This does not seem to serve the story, does it?
The purpose of casting is the same as acting, directing, editing, and producing — it&#8217;s to tell a story.
To cast Lupita Nyong&#8217;o in that role is to distract from the story. It undermines the story. She&#8217;s not fit for that part.
Philip Seymour Hoffman is probably the greatest actor of my lifetime. He’s just absolutely magnificent. It would be a little odd to cast Philip Seymour Hoffman as Malcolm X in “The Autobiography of Malcolm X,” wouldn&#8217;t it? He&#8217;s a very good actor. But there are limits.
There are limits to what an actor can do. There are limits to this entire world.

There was a famous debate within the theater, by the way, on so-called &#8220;colorblind casting,&#8221; which is never really colorblind. They call it colorblind casting when they cast Lupita as Helen of Troy, but they don&#8217;t call it colorblind casting if they were to cast Philip Seymour Hoffman as Malcolm X. That would be an outrage. It would never happen.
So it&#8217;s not exactly colorblind. It&#8217;s just casting black and Latino people in white roles, and not casting white people at all.
There was a famous debate on this between Robert Brustein, who ran the American Repertory Theater, and August Wilson, who was probably the most famous black American playwright, perhaps ever. He wrote “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” he wrote “Fences,” which was a movie with Denzel Washington some years ago — a good playwright as far as contemporary playwrights go.
And Brustein, the white liberal, argued for colorblind casting. Oh yeah, anybody of any race, any background can play any part. And August Wilson, the black guy — or half-black guy — said, no, they can&#8217;t. He didn&#8217;t want white people to play roles where they&#8217;re a garbage collector in the early 20th century in black neighborhoods with black families. It doesn&#8217;t read. It takes you out of the story. It isn&#8217;t true.
And there&#8217;s obviously some wiggle room here in certain roles because actors pretend. But it is beyond the capacity of certain actors — of all actors — to overcome their natural limits.
Christopher Nolan&#8217;s a good director, but one can object to the casting without being offensive and mean-spirited; it just doesn&#8217;t make a lot of sense.
Someone on X/Twitter rightly put it, “this is now the face that launched a thousand quips because people think it&#8217;s kind of funny.”

Actor and comedian Rob Schneider called out trans-identifying influencer Dylan Mulvaney in a recent X post, suggesting that the &#8220;Days of Girlhood&#8221; creator was guilty of &#8220;gender appropriation.&#8221;
Schneider referenced the term &#8220;cultural appropriation&#8221; — which is often invoked by the political Left when people dress, act, or otherwise publicly partake in elements of a culture to which they were not born — Schneider argued that taking another&#8217;s gender for oneself amounted to the same thing.
&#8220;If you believe there is such a thing as ‘cultural appropriation.’ Then certainly this gentleman is guilty of ‘gender appropriation,'&#8221; Schneider posted along with a photo of the influencer.

Former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines has taken a similar approach to conversations about her trans-identifying former competitor, <a href="https://twitter.com/Riley_Gaines_/status/1696121339562631325" target="_blank" rel="noopener">referring</a> to UPenn&#8217;s Lia Thomas as &#8220;the 6&#8217;4&#8243; male cosplaying as a woman.&#8221;
Critics of Schneider&#8217;s point of view immediately got personal, insulting his work as a comedian and actor, and suggesting that he was hypocritical because he had played a man who accidentally switched bodies with a teen girl through magic in &#8220;The Hot Chick.&#8221;
&#8220;Bro you literally got paid to do this,&#8221; one said, sharing a poster of the film.

One critic used a gay slur to attack Schneider, <a href="https://twitter.com/LooseyLaDuca/status/1699081769486549125" target="_blank" rel="noopener">saying</a>, &#8220;Is this f****t for fucking real? This guy has made a career out of playing everything but a straight white man yet he hates everything that isn’t a straight white man. He’s just pissed he can’t make trans jokes anymore without people burning his a**. BYE ROB.&#8221;

Schneider has been regularly targeted by the Left on social media since he came out against COVID-related mask and vaccine mandates, but <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/i-dont-care-about-my-career-rob-schneider-says-hes-absolutely-willing-to-lose-everything" target="_blank" rel="noopener">he said</a> during an interview with The Blaze founder Glenn Beck that he didn&#8217;t care.
&#8220;I’m not — I don’t care about my career anymore. I care about my children’s — the country they’re going to live in,&#8221; Schneider said, declaring that he was &#8220;absolutely&#8221; prepared to lose everything for what he believed.
Schneider has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/this-s-has-to-stop-comedian-rob-schneider-says-stop-making-girls-compete-against-trans-identifying-men" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spoken out</a> on transgender issues before and has called on parents, coaches, and female athletes to “refuse to play against” male athletes who identify as female, saying this “s*** has to stop.”

President Biden has an odd habit.
He likes to relate to his audience, but that&#8217;s a common trait among politicians. What&#8217;s strange about Biden&#8217;s folksy &#8220;charm&#8221; is that he seems to appropriate the experiences of whatever demographic his audience is that day.
If we listen to Biden, he&#8217;s a devout Irish Catholic who&#8217;s also Jewish and went to synagogue, who&#8217;s also Greek, who sometimes wished he were Polish, who was raised by Puerto Ricans and also the black community. He&#8217;s also a former truck driver who was part of the civil rights movement, was offered a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/white-house-punts-when-asked-about-bidens-apparent-navy-football-fib" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Naval Academy football sponsorship</a>, was arrested in South Africa with Nelson Mandela, and whose <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/re-someone-elses-life-is-passing-before-bidens-eyes/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dad was cool with</a> gay men kissing in public in 1950s Scranton.
It&#8217;s all very well for a politician to get folksy with his audience, but Biden goes beyond that. He sometimes crosses the line into fiction. His ever-growing collection of anecdotes about his apparently incredibly varied life experiences seem to contradict each other as well as beg belief.
Last week, Biden told the Polish president that he grew up near a lot of Polish people in Wilmington, Delaware, and was &#8220;self-conscious my name didn’t end in an ‘s-k-i’ or an ‘o.’”
Biden added &#8220;all kidding aside,&#8221; but he <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/biden-repeats-questionable-claim-he-frequented-black-church-civil-rights-movement" target="_blank" rel="noopener">often</a> <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/10/05/biden-jewish-greek-puerto-rican/">tags</a> a &#8220;not a joke&#8221; onto the end of his outlandish stories.
“I probably went to shul more than many of you did. You all think I’m kidding,” Biden <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/speeches-remarks/2022/09/30/remarks-by-president-biden-first-lady-jill-biden-and-second-gentleman-douglas-emhoff-at-a-reception-to-celebrate-the-jewish-new-year/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in September at a Jewish new year celebration.
“I’m a practicing Catholic, but I’d go to services on Saturday and on Sunday,” he said. As the audience laughed, he repeated, “You all think I’m kidding. I’m not.”
At least one psychiatrist is suggesting that Biden&#8217;s exaggerated stories may be connected to mental decline.
&#8220;One would assume that it has been pointed out to Biden by people in his circle, that he has been embellishing half-truths or even telling tall tales,&#8221; said Dr. Carole Lieberman, M.D., a forensic psychiatrist who has provided expert witness testimony in several high-profile cases.
&#8220;Biden doesn’t seem able to stop himself. Indeed, it has only gotten worse, as have other symptoms of his dementia,&#8221; Lieberman told The Daily Wire.
Concerns about Biden&#8217;s cognition are not new.
During his presidential campaign, Biden&#8217;s physician assured that the former vice president was a “healthy, vigorous, 77-year-old.” However, critics have <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/editorials/bidens-mental-sharpness-is-increasingly-doubtful-and-its-a-serious-issue" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expressed</a> serious concerns about his mental capacity.
Biden&#8217;s exaggerations may be more frequent now, but they stretch back to before his old age.
In a 1987 <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/vintage-biden-clip-resurfaces-law-school" target="_blank" rel="noopener">clip</a>, Biden boasted that he graduated “in the top half of my class” at Syracuse University College of Law. Later he admitted that he graduated 76th in his class of 85 students.
Lieberman said another reason Biden exaggerates is that he wants to be liked, especially leading up to 2024, so he is attempting to appeal to all people, Polish, Jewish, black, or LGBT.
&#8220;He tells these stories as a way to try to cement his likability in whatever audience he’s in front of — especially because he knows he’s making gaffes and needs the audience to feel connection and compassion towards him,&#8221; Lieberman said.
&#8220;I&#8217;m an honorary Greek, not only today but every day!&#8221; Biden <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYTraWVB_dk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in 2009 at a Greek Independence Day celebration.
“I was sort of raised in the Puerto Rican community at home, politically,” Biden <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/speeches-remarks/2022/10/03/remarks-by-president-biden-on-hurricane-fiona-response-and-recovery-efforts/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in October, speaking to a group of Puerto Ricans after Hurricane Fiona.
“I come out of a black community, in terms of my support,” Biden said in November 2019 during a primary debate.
That comment raised eyebrows, and a few months later, he attempted to clarify.
“I’m not saying, ‘I am black.’ But I want to tell you something — I have spent my whole career with the black community,” Biden said.
Biden has also claimed he was active in the civil rights movement.
In January, he claimed to have attended a historic black church — on top of Mass and synagogue — to help organize anti-segregation protests.
&#8220;Let&#8217;s lay one thing to rest. I may be a practicing Catholic, but [I] used to go to 7:30 Mass every morning in high school and then in college before I went to the black church,&#8221; Biden <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/biden-repeats-questionable-claim-he-frequented-black-church-civil-rights-movement" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> during remarks celebrating the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. Longtime congregants have <a href="https://freebeacon.com/elections/members-dont-recall-bidens-attendance-at-black-church-as-teen/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> they do not remember Biden ever attending.
&#8220;I used to drive an 18-wheeler, man,&#8221; Biden <a href="https://nypost.com/2021/07/29/biden-mocked-for-claiming-he-used-to-drive-an-18-wheeler/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in July 2021 while visiting a Mack Truck facility in Pennsylvania. The White House eventually pointed to a December 1973 article from the Wilmington Evening Journal saying Biden once rode in an 18-wheeler truck.
In May, Biden <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2022/05/27/remarks-by-president-biden-at-the-united-states-naval-academys-class-of-2022-graduation-and-commissioning-ceremony/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">boasted</a> that he almost attended the U.S. Naval Academy, which requires a congressional nomination. No records <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/06/14/no-record-of-biden-naval-academy-appointment-he-boasted-about/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">have been</a> found to back up that claim.
In July while speaking to athletes in Israel, Biden <a href="https://www.israelhayom.com/2022/07/14/biden-greeted-with-cheers-of-joe-at-2022-world-maccabiah-games/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> he almost tried out as a walk-on in the NFL.
In 2020, Biden <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-51648166" target="_blank" rel="noopener">walked back</a> one of his most famous questionable claims, that he was arrested in South Africa while trying to visit Nelson Mandela.
One of Biden&#8217;s most unbelievable claims is that his Catholic father had no problem with two gay men kissing in public on the streets of 1950s Scranton.
“Joey, it’s simple. They love each other,” Biden <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/re-someone-elses-life-is-passing-before-bidens-eyes/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claims</a> his dad told him. Yet even with such a staggeringly progressive father, Biden still opposed gay marriage for another six decades.
Whether Biden&#8217;s stories are honest mistakes, deliberate exaggerations, or a symptom of an aging mind, the president seems as eager as ever to tell them.
&#8220;He’s hoping for the sympathy vote,&#8221; Lieberman said.

Rotten Tomatoes film critic Kathia Woods was roundly mocked on Twitter after she claimed that the &#8220;Avatar&#8221; sequel was guilty of &#8220;cultural appropriation&#8221; of &#8220;people of color.&#8221;
Woods, who writes for the Philadelphia Tribune and sometimes for NBC, called out <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/james-cameron">James Cameron&#8217;s</a> &#8220;Avatar: The Way of Water,&#8221; because of white actors playing the roles of the fictional native alien race of Na’vi&#8217;s who are blue, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/avatar-2-guilty-cultural-appropriation-film-critic-claims-ridiculed-tweet">Fox News</a> reported.
&#8220;At some point we gotta talk about the cultural appropriation of Avatar and white actors are cos playing (sic) as poc [people of color],&#8221; Woods tweeted.
&#8220;It&#8217;s just a mess and so not necessary &amp; no amount of visual effects/GCI is gonna erase that,&#8221; she added. &#8220;Bad Lace fronts/ Dry synthetic braids. Jesus fix it.&#8221;
After the Film and TV critic was mocked for comparing the blue aliens in the fictional film to &#8220;people of color,&#8221; Woods locked her Twitter account and made it private. However, several outlets caught the remarks before responses to her account were limited.

Americans and their rabid race politics infecting the western world.&#8221;
&#8220;Come on you must know this is ridiculous, right? It’s a sci-fi movie,&#8221; another added. &#8220;We know the inspiration behind it, but it doesn&#8217;t represent them. These are supposed to be blue aliens; nothing more, nothing less.&#8221;
Woods later unlocked her Twitter account and responded to the backlash.

Film Critic Ridiculed After Accusing ‘Avatar 2’ Of ‘Cultural Appropriation’

Actress <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/celebrities" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Drew Barrymore</a> is being accused of cultural insensitivity toward “black creators” for posting a video of herself enjoying the rain, which at least one critic says is an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/cultural-appropriation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">appropriation</a> of the &#8220;black men frolicking&#8221; trend.
Many social media users were confused by the criticism posted by <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tiktok" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TikTok</a> user amushroomblackly, who chastised Barrymore for the video clip by saying she was a “colonizer” who made it possible for millions of her followers to “dismiss and disrespect the boundaries that black creators have set.”

The TikTok user was upset because she saw Barrymore’s video as an extension of a TikTok trend called &#8220;black men frolicking.&#8221; It began with the user thexsadxoptimistic filming himself happily running through a field of flowers. The clip got shared on Mashable in May and quickly went viral, inspiring other social media users to copy him. It allegedly spread to black women as well.
Barrymore, meanwhile, shared a short clip of herself enjoying the rain while she was standing in what appears to be the courtyard of a city building. “Whenever you can, go out into the rain. Do not miss the opportunity!” she tells followers gleefully. 
That clip also went viral, with fans of the 47-year-old former child star embracing her happiness after she had such a difficult upbringing. “Watching her heal her inner child makes me so happy,” one person responded to the clip, which boasts more than 21 million views on TikTok.
Another user agreed, saying, “PROTECT DREW BARRYMORE.”
A previous video of hers from May also showed the actress enjoying getting wet in the rain.
Though Barrymore never said she was following the “black men frolicking” trend, the TikTok critic clearly believed she was. When critics came after her for responding too harshly to the actress, amushroomblackly doubled down and posted several more critical videos, reiterating her stance. 
“When we say it’s racist, it’s racist,” she said during her reaction to Barrymore’s rain video. 
And she’s not the only one taking issue with white people allegedly participating in the frolicking trend. Another <a href="https://twitter.com/zorro6195/status/1563027319324741632" target="_blank" rel="noopener">user</a> mentioned how only black content creators should be posting these types of videos, and that anyone who considers themselves “allies” should agree with that stance.
“If you’re a good ally, you know when to take a step back and re-evaluate your choices. And stop,” he said. “Let black people experience black joy with each other for once.”

Actor <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/john-leguizamo-upset-latinx-talent-not-represented-at-oscars/">John Leguizamo</a> lashed out at Hollywood and streaming platforms on Friday, accusing them of &#8220;cultural appropriation&#8221; after he learned that actor <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/james-franco-digitally-erased-vanity-fair-cover-paul-bois/">James Franco</a> had been cast as dictator Fidel Castro in the upcoming film &#8220;Alina of Cuba.&#8221;

This F’d up! Plus seriously difficult story to tell without aggrandizement which would b wrong! I don’t got a prob with Franco but he ain’t Latino!&#8221;
The filmmakers defended the decision by pointing out the fact that Franco, whose ancestry includes Portuguese along with Russian, Jewish, and Swedish, actually shared a similar facial structure to Castro — who was born in Cuba but of Spanish (European) descent.
&#8220;To get there on such a tough look to cast, we used Fidel Castro’s ancient Galician heraldry as our focal compass, and then combed through the entire ranks of actors with Latin roots in Hollywood to find someone who has a similar facial structure,&#8221; John Martinez O’Felan <a href="https://deadline.com/2022/08/james-franco-fidel-castro-alina-of-cuba-movie-1235085397/">told Deadline</a>, adding, &#8220;In executing a close search into our hopefuls through the eye of Spanish and Portuguese genealogy which the Galicians held, we found that James, by far, had the closest facial likeness.&#8221;
Castro&#8217;s own daughter Alina Fernández approved the casting decision as well, saying, &#8220;James Franco has an obvious physical resemblance with Fidel Castro, besides his skills and charisma.&#8221;
Fernandez also touted the fact that nearly the entire project — both in front of the camera and behind — is Latino.
&#8220;I find the selection of the cast amazing,” she said. &#8220;Ana Villafañe is extraordinarily talented, and not only as an actress because she is also a great singer, a very complete performer. I’m sure that Mía Maestro, an actress I admire, will understand and interpret Naty, my mother, in a unique way and I can’t wait to see her building her character.&#8221;
Leguizamo followed his first complaint with a video explaining that his complaint had arisen out of his own experience with what he described as &#8220;brown face&#8221; — white actors like Charlton Heston and Ben Affleck being made up to look Latin in order to play certain roles.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/entertainment">Pop star</a> Gwen Stefani stands accused of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/cultural-appropriation">appropriating</a> black culture in the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/music">music video</a> for her new song, “Light My Fire.” 
The song was done in collaboration with Jamaican rapper Sean Paul and singer Shenseea. Stefani faces criticism for putting her hair in dreadlocks and wearing a green, black and yellow dress reminiscent of the Jamaican flag in the video.
“Y’all. Mother Appropriation is BACK!!!! Where my 2000s No Doubt/Gwen hive at!!!?? ITS TIME!!!&#8221; one person <a href="https://twitter.com/chulito_jotito/status/1547335864711249920">tweeted</a> in reply, referring to the fact that the “Hollaback Girl” singer has been accused of this exact transgression in the past.
“Dear Gwen, You’re far too comfortable with cultural appropriation. Y’all remember the harajuku girls? The bindi she chose to wear in one of her videos? The bantu knots? The imitation of indigenous culture within a music video, as well as, indecently portraying Latina women?” another person <a href="https://twitter.com/bigmushroomtip/status/1547449603930324997?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">commented</a>.

Stefani’s 2004 album “Love. Angel. Music. Baby.” featured Japanese backup dancers and multiple references to Tokyo’s Harajuku fashion. At the time, critics called out Stefani’s appropriation of that culture as well. Comedian Margaret Cho referred to it as a “minstrel show” in 2006, per <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/07/15/entertainment/gwen-stefani-light-my-fire-intl-scli/index.html">CNN</a>. 
The “Don’t Speak” composer hasn’t released a statement on the current controversy. However, in a 2021 interview with <a href="https://www.papermag.com/gwen-stefani-cover-story-2653109335.html?rebelltitem=6#rebelltitem6">Paper</a> magazine, she did address past accusations of stealing from other cultures.
&#8220;If we didn&#8217;t buy and sell and trade our cultures in, we wouldn&#8217;t have so much beauty, you know?&#8221; she said at the time. &#8220;We learn from each other, we share from each other, we grow from each other. And all these rules are just dividing us more and more.&#8221;
Elsewhere in the article, Stefani talks about being enamored by Japanese culture from a young age because her father traveled there for work and came home with souvenirs and stories. 
&#8220;If you read the actual lyrics [in &#8216;What You Waiting For?&#8217;], it talks about being a fan of Japan and how if I do good, I get to go back there,&#8221; she told the publication.
&#8220;I never got to have dancers with No Doubt. I never got to change costumes. I never got to do all of those fun girl things that I always love to do. So I had this idea that I would have a posse of girls — because I never got to hang with girls — and they would be Japanese, Harajuku girls, because those are the girls that I love,&#8221; the singer continued. 
&#8220;Those are my homies. That&#8217;s where I would be if I had my dream come true, I could go live there and I could go hang out in Harajuku.&#8221;

Chet Hanks won&#8217;t apologize for what activists are calling &#8220;cultural appropriation,&#8221; instead telling his critics to &#8220;kick rocks.&#8221;
Chet, son of actors Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, has been <a href="https://level.medium.com/mugging-the-black-experience-on-adele-and-the-politics-of-appropriation-ceff5104ed8">accused</a> of so-called appropriating black culture for using a Jamaican accent. His song and music video for &#8220;White Boy Summer&#8221; has also been <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/apr/14/chet-hanks-keeps-calling-for-a-white-boy-summer-and-he-really-needs-to-stop">criticized</a> in a similar racial vein by activists.
&#8220;Nah. I don’t feel like I’ve truly done anything offensive, so I don&#8217;t,&#8221; Chet recently told host Ziwe Fumudoh, when asked if he&#8217;d like to “apologize to any marginalized communities,&#8221; particularly the &#8220;Patois community.&#8221;
The &#8220;Ziwe&#8221; host asked if the actor felt this way because he viewed his alleged &#8220;appropriation&#8221; as merely &#8220;a celebration of culture&#8221; and believes &#8220;social justice warriors&#8221; complaining about him can &#8220;go kick rocks.&#8221;
Chet nodded in the affirmative.
“Yeah. I 100% agree,&#8221; the 31-year-old responded. &#8220;Social justice warriors can kick rocks.&#8221;
The video went viral, garnering 2.8 million views in a matter of hours.

In 2021, Chet explained what the phenomenon of &#8220;white boy summer&#8221; is really about &#8212; and that&#8217;s apparently &#8220;interracial relations.&#8221;
&#8220;White boy summer is me,&#8221; Chet <a href="https://exclaim.ca/music/article/chet_hanks_explains_what_white_boy_summer_really_means">told</a> YouTuber Andrew Callaghan.
&#8220;White boy summer is fun, inclusive; white boy summer is love,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;It&#8217;s about the white boys that love black queens — it&#8217;s the white boys that are tuned into the black girl magic. That&#8217;s really what white boy summer is all about: just shining a light on interracial relations.&#8221;
Chet added that he&#8217;s preferred black women since &#8220;as long as I can remember.&#8221;
The rapper recently made headlines when he <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/tom-hanks-son-chet-speaks-candidly-about-toxic-upbringing-in-hollywood">spoke</a> out about &#8220;toxic&#8221; Hollywood culture in a video titled, “The Truth About Growing Up As A Hanks.”
&#8220;While Chet said he’s &#8216;blessed&#8217; to be part of a family he loves, the experience of growing up with very famous parents was a &#8216;double-edged sword,'&#8221; <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/tom-hanks-son-chet-speaks-candidly-about-toxic-upbringing-in-hollywood">The Daily Wire</a> reported.
“There’s a lot of advantages but sometimes it can be pretty weird,” he said in the video, which was published in February. “I got to do a lot of cool s*** that a lot of people don’t get the opportunity to do. I got to travel the world, stay in nice hotels, fly on private planes and I’m very blessed for that. I wouldn’t change my situation.”
“My experience was even more complicated because on top of fame already being toxic, I wasn’t even famous,” Chet continued. “I was just the son of somebody famous so I hadn’t even done anything to deserve any sort of recognition and that created a lot of contempt.”
“People would make up their minds about me before they even got the chance to know me and it was extremely hard to break down their walls,” the &#8220;Empire&#8221; alum added.

Reclusive Pulitzer-prize winning author Anne Tyler doesn’t do too many interviews. However, she did jump into a cultural controversy by declaring that she believed writing from different perspectives that didn’t match her background was completely acceptable. 
The 80-year-old author spoke with the <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/anne-tyler-what-am-i-going-to-do-with-my-life-im-only-80-fcpcjrkw3">Sunday Times</a> on the matter. During their conversation, the “Breathing Lessons” writer said she didn’t understand the concept of only writing what you’ve directly experienced.
“I’m astonished by the appropriation issue. It would be very foolish for me to write, let’s say, a novel from the viewpoint of a black man, but I think I should be allowed to do it,” Tyler said.
She also spoke on the overall concept of cancel culture.
“If an incredibly talented person has written novels in the 1930s or ’40s and all of a sudden it is discovered that there was something he said or did — even something as bad as sexual harassment — he should be condemned for it but I don’t see why you should withdraw his novels from publication,” she continued.
Twitter users were quick to express their opinions on the issue of appropriation.
“No one’s saying you can’t, just that you shouldn’t [write about black characters]. Sounds like you don’t want the consequences of such an action. And that’s privilege,” one person <a href="https://twitter.com/LaLinda63/status/1505504486692958208">responded</a>. 
Still, Tyler had plenty of advocates too. 
“Writers are supposed to be truth-tellers and be free to tell whatever story they wish. The Social Justice Warriors don’t dictate what a writer can or cannot do,” one Twitter user <a href="https://twitter.com/DJRobbins7/status/1505504840012734472">said</a> in defense of Tyler. 
One of the most recent book controversies dealing with appropriation had to do with the 2020 best seller “American Dirt,” which was written by white author Jeanine Cummins. Critics came down on Cummins for writing from the perspective of Mexican migrants and demanded she get canceled.
Tyler’s opinions are surprising, but the most shocking thing of all is her willingness to speak publicly in the first place. The Times reported on <a href="https://twitter.com/ST_Culture/status/1505470786055950339">Twitter</a> that the reclusive author has only agreed to a few interviews over the course of her decades long career and that until 2012, even her U.K. publisher had only met the woman one time for lunch. 
The Pulitzer Prize winner delivered a few other gems in the interview as well. As for technology changing books, she said, “You wouldn’t believe how much the existence of cell phones has changed plots. You can’t lose touch with somebody as easily as you used to. You can’t lose their phone number, or if you move to a new place everybody still knows how to call you.”
Tyler also quipped that she wasn’t sure where to take her career next. “I never planned to be a writer at all. For years, maybe even today, sometimes I think, ‘What exactly am I going to do with my life? What is my career going to be? I’m only 80, for God’s sake!”

A social justice warrior and culture writer complained on Twitter about the alleged problematic nature of a white chef publishing a cookbook about dumplings and noodles. 
Roslyn Talusan insinuated in a tweet that she found the idea of a white woman writing a cookbook about traditional Asian food to be a form of cultural appropriation. Talusan tweeted, “Why did a white woman write a cookbook about dumplings and noodles.”

<a href="https://twitter.com/roslyntalusan">Talusan</a> is a freelancer at outlets such as The AV Club, B*tch Media, Refinery29, and Vice. She has posted a slew of controversial takes against white women online, including one that dubbed white women as “a plague.” 
Her tweet was directed at BBC recipe writer Pippa Middlehurst, a former cancer research scientist turned winner of Britain’s Best Home Cook. She studied Chinese cookery at Lanzhou Noodle School and created a cookbook to help people create her favorite dumpling and noodle recipes at home. 
Twitter users opted to dunk on Talusan for trying to call out someone so well-versed in Chinese food culture. One user pointed out that Middlehurst had been studying Chinese food culture for over 15 years. 
“LMAO the woman has been learning east/southeast Asian cooking for over 15 years and attended an actual f*****g NOODLE SCHOOL in China,” the user said. “It’s like you think it’s impossible for anyone who isn’t Chinese to be just as versed in preparing dumplings as anyone of the culture.”

A second user noted that other cultures make traditional American foods and that dumplings are not a food exclusive to Asia. 
“Wait till you find out that Arabs can make pizza, Russians can make omlettes [sic] and Japanese can make burgers,” the second user said. “That should be fun to watch. Btw, dumplings aren’t exclusively Asian. They’re also native in Europe. In German they’re commonly known as Knödel of Klöse.”

Another Twitter user said that Talusan was trying to “segregate cooking.”

Middlehurst responded to the intense backlash lobbed at her from Talusan’s tweet in a long Twitter thread. 
It <a href="https://twitter.com/Pippyeats_/status/1427604421744250909">read</a>: 
<blockquote>Hi Roslyn Talusan &#8211; trying to approach this [without] defensiveness &amp; it seems as though your issue is with the larger system of injustice in food publishing/under representation of BIPOC authors/over representation of white authors, rather than *me personally* or I think so anyway. 
Attacking an individual that you know nothing about, pasting a picture of my face and calling me an arrogant and uncreative white woman allows others who respect your opinion to justify harassing me. In my experience, tweets like this don’t challenge the systemic issue, or instigate any change. It just serves to temporarily make me the poster child for that system of injustice — that no doubt I am part of — and simply leads to dog piling and mounds of threatening DMs telling me for .e.g to “go and drown,” “you deserve to fail” and it ends there.</blockquote>
Following the online blowback, Talusan posted her PayPal account to her Twitter feed in hopes of raising funds for her alleged $130 therapy sessions. 
“Anyway, therapy costs me $130/session and I’m gonna need it after almost 48 hours of harassment from nazis. Thank you to everyone who sees what’s happening. Tips, solidarity, heart emojis appreciated,” Talusan said.

Twitter Users Dunk On Social Justice Warrior For Complaining About ‘White Woman’ Who Published Dumplings Cookbook

Actor Michael B. Jordan is apologizing to the “woke” mob after the name of his new rum brand drew criticism and charges of cultural appropriation for its ties to Caribbean culture. 
&#8220;I just wanna say on behalf of myself and my partners, our intention was never to offend or hurt a culture (we love and respect) and hoped to celebrate and shine a positive light on,&#8221; Jordan, 34, wrote in a statement on his Instagram story Monday, per <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/celebrities/2021/06/23/jouvert-michael-b-jordan-rum-faces-cultural-appropriation-claims/5317702001/">USA Today</a>. &#8220;Last few days has been a lot of listening. A lot of learning and engaging in countless community conversations.&#8221;
Jordan recently launched his rum brand, “J’Ouvert,” which “is named after the annual celebration of Caribbean heritage that signals the beginning of Carnival and has ties to emancipation from slavery originating in Trinidad and Tobago. Critics argued Jordan should not be the face of the company without having any apparent connection to the Caribbean,” USA Today reported. 
Rapper and singer Nicki Minaj <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CQcBfxiLWC0/">reposted</a> a discussion about the history of the term, noting that she was sure that Jordan “didn’t intentionally do anything he thought Caribbean ppl would find offensive— but now that you are aware, change the name &amp; continue to flourish &amp; prosper.”
A <a href="https://www.change.org/p/caribbean-people-stop-michael-b-jordan-s-trademark-of-j-ouvert-for-his-rum">petition</a> called &#8220;Stop Michael B Jordan&#8217;s Trademark of J&#8217;OUVERT For His Rum!&#8221; on Change.org had received 12,479 signatures on Wednesday.
Buzzfeed <a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/eleanorbate/michael-b-jordan-jouvert-rum-cultural-appropriation-apology">reported</a> that the rum box explained the name, saying, &#8220;Derived from the Antellian Creole French term meaning &#8216;daybreak,&#8217; J&#8217;Ouvert originated in the pre-dawn streets of Trinidad, as celebrations of emancipation combined with Carnival season to serve as the festival&#8217;s informal commencements.”
“Crafted on those same islands, J&#8217;Ouvert Rum is a tribute to the &#8216;party start,’” it went on.
Due to the fact that Jordan apparently has no ties to Caribbean culture, critics jumped on his use of the term as a way of inappropriately adopting another culture’s customs rather than seeing it as a way to celebrate Caribbean culture and the traditions surrounding J’Ouvert.
Other celebrities have been at the center of cultural appropriation controversies in the past, including the Kardashian group with Kim Kardashian most recently being accused of using another culture when she posed for a photoshoot and incorporated a religious symbol.

Some came to her defense, however, writing, “Hang on folks … we believers in India wear OM pendants earrings and rings so Don’t [sic] think Kim’s caused any harm to our religious sentiments. Embracing Hinduism or any religion from the heart can only bless and empower,” another user <a href="https://twitter.com/RK49795075/status/1397929195351601158">chimed</a> in. 
Kardashian’s half-sister and model Kendall Jenner was also accused of cultural appropriation by members of the woke mob earlier this year when she started a tequila brand.

After she announced the brand, social media users criticized Jenner and accused her of culturally appropriating Mexican culture.
Other stars have been accused of inappropriately using the traditions and customs of other cultures, including Justin Bieber, who was notably <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/celebrities/2021/04/27/justin-bieber-accused-cultural-appropriation-over-new-dreadlocks/4861916001/">criticized for wearing dreadlocks.</a>

The photos show Kardashian wearing lots of makeup with her hair in long braids. “Om” is used in Hinduism and other religions mostly of India. It is “considered to be the greatest of all the mantras, or sacred formulas,” according to <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Om-Indian-religion">Encyclopedia Britannica</a>. The syllable “om” is made up of three sounds “which represent several important triads: the three worlds of earth, atmosphere, and heaven; thought, speech, and action; the three qualities…of matter (goodness, passion, and darkness); and the three sacred Vedic scriptures (Rigveda, Yajurveda, and Samaveda).” It is spoken at the start and finish of Hindu prayers, meditation, and chants. It is also utilized in Buddhist and Jain practices.

Rajan Zed, a leading Hindu statesman and president of the Universal Society of Hinduism, called out Kardashian&#8217;s actions on his <a href="https://www.rajanzed.com/upset-hindus-seek-apology-from-kim-kardashian-for-donning-sacred-om-earrings-in-photo-shoot/">website</a> and &#8220;suggested Kim Kardashian … undergo training in religious and cultural sensitivity so that she had a better understanding of the feelings of communities.&#8221;

In 2019, as Kardashian set out to start her own shapewear line, she was accused of culturally appropriating the term “kimono” for her brand.
As Fox News <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/lifestyle/kim-kardashian-backlash-kimono-shapewear">reported</a> at the time, “Kimono, which means ‘thing to wear’ in Japanese, is a type of traditional outfit worn in Japan, featuring wide sleeves on a long, loose robe that is that bound by a sash. The garment is worn typically by women.”
Social media users came after Kardashian, saying that she should use a different name. She eventually did change the name to “SKIMS.”
