Five people were wounded when at least one gunman opened fire at Virginia State University early Saturday morning, just two days before the start of the semester.
Gunfire erupted near some of the university’s dormitories in Chesterfield County around 1:30 a.m. ET, WTVR CBS 6 <a href="https://www.wtvr.com/news/local-news/chesterfield-county/virginia-state-university-shooting-prompts-lockdown-aug-15-2026">reported</a>. When police arrived, they found five people suffering from gunshot wounds. One victim was initially treated for life-threatening wounds and was later upgraded to critical condition. The other four victims appear to have suffered minor graze wounds.
In a post on social media, university officials said that the shooting involves &#8220;multiple suspects.&#8221;
&#8220;VSU Police and the Chesterfield County Police Department are actively investigating,&#8221; Virginia State University said at 5:56 a.m.
In an update at 8:22 a.m., the university said that the lockdown had been lifted, but &#8220;a significant law enforcement presence remains on campus as the investigation into this morning&#8217;s shooting continues.&#8221; It appears that no suspects have been taken into custody as of time of publication, and the university urged anyone with information on the shooting to contact law enforcement.

In the span of four months, Lindsay Clancy, the woman who took her three children to the basement of their home and strangled them to death one by one, was prescribed 13 different medications. 
&#8220;I really don&#8217;t like the way I feel on the Remeron and I know that I can&#8217;t stick with taking it,&#8221; Clancy told psychiatric nurse practitioner Rebecca Jollotta through her patient portal in December 2022. &#8220;I started having very intrusive thoughts that I never had before.&#8221; 
Remeron&#8217;s generic drug name is mirtazapine, an antidepressant. It was one of the 13 medications Clancy was prescribed before she killed her 5-year-old daughter, 3-year-old son, and 8-month-old son on January 24, 2023.

In another message to Jollotta, she wrote, &#8220;I also just feel concerningly numb right now, like I have no emotion whatsoever. I feel like I&#8217;m going to die, and I don&#8217;t care. What do I do about this?&#8221;
Jollotta testified in court that she told Clancy her symptoms would &#8220;get better.&#8221;
&#8220;I said, &#8216;Even though they feel terrible, remember that there are symptoms of an illness that is very real and very treatable. This is going to get better.&#8221;
Weeks later, Clancy would murder her children and attempt to commit suicide by throwing herself out of her home&#8217;s second-story window.
Jollotta is one of the medical professionals who was sued by both Clancy and Clancy&#8217;s now ex-husband for allegedly overmedicating Clancy. Jollotta denies the allegations.
Clancy has admitted to killing her children, but her defense team is arguing she should not be held criminally responsible because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis, a mental illness that includes hallucinations and delusions.
A note that was last edited on Clancy&#8217;s cellphone the day before she strangled her children read, “I was the healthiest, happiest mom. I worked out every morning, meditated, and took care of myself so I could be the best for my kids. Until prescription medication stole me from my own body. It began with a touch of postpartum anxiety.”
Prosecuting attorney Shanan Buckingham argued that Clancy &#8220;acted intentionally, rationally, and swiftly&#8221; to kill her children. Clancy waited until her husband was out of the home before committing the act. Buckingham added, &#8220;This is not a public debate about women&#8217;s mental health and how the medical system treats women. This case is about this defendant, Lindsay Clancy.&#8221;

In a jaw-dropping courtroom confession, Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty Friday to federal stalking charges carrying a potential life sentence in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, a move that could have major implications for his upcoming New York murder trial.
&#8220;After years of enduring severe pain in my back and seeing others too, I learned UnitedHealth would hold its conference,” Mangione said in a New York City courtroom. “I researched the event online. I observed the conference of the largest health care company would be attended by executives, not doctors, nurses or patients. I traveled to Manhattan and emailed leadership posing as an investor managing $58 billion.”
&#8220;Before traveling to New York, I used a 3-D printer to make a gun. I traveled to New York with the intent to shoot Brian Thompson. On the morning of December 4, 2024, I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan. … I knew what I was doing,&#8221; he added.
The guilty plea marks a dramatic turnaround for the 28-year-old, who has long maintained his innocence and is now pursuing a legal theory that could potentially derail his separate, high-stakes murder trial set to begin September 8 in New York state court.
&#8220;Mr. Mangione is prepared to plead guilty to the indictment at this time,&#8221; Mangione&#8217;s attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo told the judge. Mangione then confirmed that he is pleading guilty to the stalking charges.
Brian Thompson’s family called the plea “an important step towards justice” for the father who left behind a wife and two children.  
“While nothing will ease the pain of losing him, we are grateful that the federal justice system has held the person responsible for this heinous act accountable,” the family said in a statement. “Now we look to the court to ensure that sentencing reflects the severity of this crime. We remain mindful that additional proceedings in New York and Pennsylvania are still to come, and we will continue to seek the justice Brian deserves.&#8221;
Mangione has never apologized for the killing or expressed remorse.
Ahead of Friday’s hearing, the DOJ was unsure whether Mangione would plead guilty but was prepared to seek a life sentence if he did, a source familiar with the matter told The Daily Wire.
In his federal case, the Maryland native faced one count of interstate stalking resulting in death and one count of stalking through the use of interstate facilities resulting in death. Both charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison, <a href="https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/pr/luigi-mangione-charged-stalking-and-murder-unitedhealthcare-ceo-brian-thompson-and-use">according to the Department of Justice.</a> A judge tossed out a firearms charge that would’ve made Mangione eligible for the federal death penalty. The federal trial was scheduled to begin on January 5, 2027.
“Mangione planned his attack for months and stalked his victim for days before murdering him — methodically planning when, where, and how to carry out his crime,” then-Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said at the time.
In state court, Mangione faces eight charges, including second-degree murder, which carries a maximum sentence of 25 years to life. Following his guilty plea in federal court, his lawyers may argue that New York’s double-jeopardy protections prevent state prosecutors from trying him for murder because the state charges stem from the same criminal act as the federal case.  
The Constitution generally protects defendants from being prosecuted twice for the same offense. Still, Mangione’s state and federal cases fall under the “separate sovereigns” exception to double jeopardy, <a href="https://abcnews.com/US/luigi-mangione-federal-guilty-plea-expected-announced-friday/story?id=135608406">according to ABC News.</a> Under the doctrine, the federal government and New York are considered separate sovereigns, allowing both to prosecute the same defendant for the same conduct under their respective laws.
“If a plea in the Federal case against Luigi Mangione is indeed being announced tomorrow, it sure seems the timing is intended to block the State trial,” Rich Schoenstein, a trial lawyer, <a href="https://x.com/LawfulRiches/status/2087899313259069841?s=20">said</a> on X. “Whether that succeeds remains to be seen.” 
“The State is a separate sovereign, and the charges are arguably quite different. If New York wants the trial to go forward anyway, it has an argument, and the issue will be hotly contested,” he added. 
The legal drama comes days after <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/luigi-mangione-trial-gets-anonymous-jury-over-fears-of-intimidation">The Daily Wire</a> reported that the high-profile murder case will proceed with an anonymous jury and expanded courtroom access after a judge finalized several key details ahead of the September proceedings.
Thompson was gunned down in Midtown Manhattan on December 4, 2024, leading to a five-day manhunt that ended with Mangione’s arrest in rural Pennsylvania, more than 270 miles from the shooting scene.
At the time of his arrest, Mangione possessed “fake ID used by the suspect, the gun they believe was used in the shooting and a handwritten ‘claim of responsibility,’ authorities have said,” <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/luigi-mangione-pleads-not-guilty-as-doj-seeks-death-penalty?author=Nathan+Gay&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Luigi+Mangione+Pleads+Not+Guilty+As+DOJ+Seeks+Death+Penalty">The Daily Wire</a> previously reported. 
Mangione’s targeting of Thompson appears meticulously planned, according to the DOJ, and three 9mm shell casings recovered from the crime scene had the words “delay,” “deny,” and “depose” written on them, an apparent reference to a 2010 book criticizing insurance industry tactics, according to the NYPD.
The case has drawn widespread public attention, with supporters of Mangione continuing to gather outside the New York City courthouse nearly two years later to rally behind the accused assassin.
“I support Luigi whether or not he did it. So for me, I always knew this could be on the table. So I wouldn&#8217;t really be phased by one,” a white woman supporting Mangione <a href="https://x.com/nypost/status/2088268716186169596?s=20">said</a> Friday of a possible plea. “This is about a movement. It is about Luigi, but it&#8217;s also about the conversation he started.”

Lindsay Clancy used her phone to search the phrase &#8220;can you treat a sociopath&#8221; just four days before she killed her three children and then attempted suicide, a Massachusetts State Police investigator testified Thursday.
Sgt. Timothy Chiappini told jurors that a forensic review of Clancy&#8217;s phone revealed that the search was made on January 20, 2023. In the weeks leading up to the January 24 killings, the phone was also used to search terms related to mental illness, including &#8220;bipolar disorder,&#8221; &#8220;postpartum depression,&#8221; &#8220;hallucinations,&#8221; &#8220;schizophrenia,&#8221; and &#8220;psychosis.&#8221;
Clancy is on trial for the murders of her three children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months. She does not dispute killing them, but her attorneys argue that she had postpartum psychosis and was legally insane at the time. Prosecutors contend that Clancy deliberately planned the killings and understood what she was doing.
Under cross-examination Thursday, defense attorney Kevin Reddington questioned Chiappini about several other disturbing searches allegedly recovered from Clancy&#8217;s phone.
&#8220;Did you come across a search, &#8216;where is the carotid artery?'&#8221; Reddington asked.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t recall,&#8221; Chiappini replied.
Reddington also asked whether he&#8217;d found searches for &#8220;how to slit throat to die&#8221; and &#8220;how to turn airbags off on Kia Sorento,&#8221; but Chiappini said he could not recall those either.
&#8220;These all came from Lindsay&#8217;s phone, right?&#8221; Reddington asked as he held up posters showing blown-up screenshots of the searches.
Chiappini replied, &#8220;I can&#8217;t confirm that.&#8221;
&#8220;It&#8217;s a pretty good inference though, right?&#8221; Reddington pressed.
&#8220;Yes, sir,&#8221; was Chiappini&#8217;s response, and he noted that the phone number displayed on the screen matched the one he&#8217;d used for the forensic search.
Investigators also recovered notes from Clancy&#8217;s phone describing her struggles with motherhood and fears that she was failing her youngest child:
<blockquote>I am sad and depressed because I am not able to parent my third child like my 1st. I want to treat any one of my babies like my first, but I know that&#8217;s not a feasible possibility. I&#8217;m sad that I stopped breastfeeding. I feel not as connected with Cal now. I think I sort of resent my other children because they prevent me from treating Cal like my first baby, and I know that&#8217;s not fair to them. I know that.</blockquote>
Clancy also wrote that she had &#8220;fallen out of the habit of doing anything fun&#8221; and described being terrified that something would happen to her children or that she would make a mistake that negatively impacted their development.
&#8220;For the last 5 years, I&#8217;ve just filled my mind with all things parenting, and it&#8217;s just unhealthy,&#8221; she wrote.
State Trooper Kyle Pavao also testified on Thursday, stating that he&#8217;d reviewed a Surface Pro tablet and found searches for country musician Tom T. Hall — who died by suicide in 2021 — and stated that someone in the home had then clicked on a link that opened a page detailing &#8220;suicide methods.&#8221;

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Gregory Carro ruled that the identities of jurors will be kept from the public during the trial, which is scheduled to begin September 8 and is expected to last roughly six weeks. 
The anonymous jury comes as prosecutors warn that Mangione’s sizable and highly vocal supporter base could pressure witnesses and potential jurors. 
“The media attention surrounding this case — and the efforts of some of the defendant’s supporters both to intimidate witnesses and to interfere with the functioning of the jury — will place extraordinary pressure on witnesses and potential jurors alike,” Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Joel Seidemann wrote in a Monday letter to Carro obtained by <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/prosecutors-warn-luigi-mangione-supporters-may-intimidate-witnesses-jurors-murder-trial">Fox News</a>.
Prosecutors had asked the court to limit access to the proceedings and raised concerns that supporters could secretly record proceedings in an overflow room and distribute the footage. Carro nevertheless ordered that an overflow room be made available for members of the media and the public, after Mangione’s attorneys argued that limiting courtroom access would unfairly restrict coverage of the case.
The judge also warned that anyone who takes out a cellphone in either the courtroom or the overflow room will be removed.

Lindsay Clancy&#8217;s emotional outburst brought trial proceedings to a halt on Wednesday as she sobbed throughout the testimony given by the medical examiner who performed autopsies on two of her three children.
As medical examiner Barbara Olson delivered details about the autopsy performed on Cora Clancy (age 5), Clancy could be heard crying intermittently — and at one point, she cried out, &#8220;I can&#8217;t do this!&#8221;
Olson testified that Cora Clancy had died of asphyxiation, and she explained that the child had likely felt pain until she passed out from the lack of oxygen — which could have been as brief as ten seconds or as long as 30 seconds.
&#8220;There is a component of pain present until loss of consciousness occurs,&#8221; Olson said.
Olson testified a short time later that Dawson (3) had also died of asphyxiation.
Video showed Clancy&#8217;s lawyer, high-profile defense attorney Kevin Reddington, holding Clancy&#8217;s hand as she wept throughout the testimony, her head resting on her arms on the table.

Twice during Wednesday&#8217;s proceedings, as Clancy showed visible emotional reactions to the testimony, Judge William Sullivan brought the trial to a halt, sending the jury out as two women came in and tried to console the defendant.
Clancy is on trial for strangling all three of her young children with exercise bands — Cora (5), Dawson (3), and Callan (eight months) — before cutting her own wrists and throat and jumping from the second-story window. The fall did not kill her, but left her paralyzed from the waist down — and she has been attending court in a wheelchair.
The defense has not argued that Clancy did not strangle her three young children, but has instead argued that she is not criminally responsible for the killings by reason of insanity. Clancy, the defense says, was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis — made worse by a series of mood-altering medications — at the time of the killings.
Clancy had also been turned away after calling a suicide hotline twice because she reportedly did not have concrete plans at the time to act on her suicidal thoughts.

Three conservative states plan to carry out a rare triple execution Thursday involving men ages 42 to 70, two of whom are convicted of murdering women, and one is convicted of raping and murdering a 5-year-old girl.
For the first time in <a href="https://apnews.com/article/execution-death-penalty-tennessee-alabama-oklahoma-062c601ee0ff9a5f6d7b79045a0cc6b5">over a decade</a>, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Tennessee plan to execute three men by lethal injection on the same day, including a 66-year-old convicted of murdering a motel maid, a 70-year-old guilty of shooting his girlfriend, and a 42-year-old who confessed to the brutal slaying of a young girl he paid her mother to abuse. 
The United States has not executed three men on the same day since January 7, 2010, according to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/execution-death-penalty-tennessee-alabama-oklahoma-062c601ee0ff9a5f6d7b79045a0cc6b5">Associated Press</a>. 
In Alabama, Jeremy Williams, 42, is scheduled to die Thursday evening for the 2021 rape and murder of 5-year-old Kamarie Holland, whose disappearance sparked a desperate search-and-rescue effort, <a href="https://www.wtvm.com/2026/08/13/jeremy-williams-set-execution-murder-5-year-old-kamarie-holland/">according to WTVM</a>. 
Phone records determined that Williams and the child&#8217;s mother, Kristy Siple, conspired the night before the 5-year-old was reported missing on December 13, 2021. Siple sold her daughter to Williams for $2,500 in exchange for one hour of oral sex. Police found the child’s strangled body dumped outside an abandoned home. 
A jury found Williams guilty on all capital murder charges, and a judge sentenced him to death. Williams later waived his appeals, allowing Republican Governor Kay Ivey to move up his execution date. The child’s mother is serving 20 years in prison for human sex trafficking charges, <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2026/08/06/alabama-execution-jeremy-williams-kamarie-holland/91191606007/">according to USA Today</a>. 
“This guy brought a tremendous amount of pain and hurt to several, several little girls, and he don’t deserve to breathe the air that you and I breathe,” Sheriff Heath Taylor told <a href="https://www.wjtv.com/news/regional-news/5-year-old-kamarie-holland-was-not-the-only-victim-brutalized-by-alabama-death-row-inmate-jeremy-williams/">WJTV</a>. “And that’s just the way I feel.”
In Tennessee, Anthony Darrell Hines, 66, was scheduled to be executed at 10 a.m. local time Thursday at a maximum-security prison in Nashville for the 1985 murder of motel maid Catherine Jean Jenkins, according to local outlet WZTV. A jury convicted Hines of first-degree felony murder after Jenkins was found naked, wrapped in a sheet, inside a motel room. Hines stabbed Jenkins multiple times in the chest and other areas of the body. 
Earlier this week, Republican Tennessee Governor Bill Lee refused to intervene to stop the execution.  
“After deliberate consideration of Anthony Darrell Hines’ request for clemency, and after a thorough review of the case, I am upholding the sentence of the State of Tennessee and do not plan to intervene,” he <a href="https://fox17.com/news/local/tennessee-governor-bill-lee-declines-clemency-darrell-hines-execution-august-13-tony-carruthers-physician-lethal-injection">said</a>. 
In Oklahoma, Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez, 70, is set to die by <a href="https://apnews.com/article/execution-nitrogen-methods-lethal-52d43ab3f7da0e4c05144328be656854">lethal injection</a> at the state’s penitentiary for killing his longtime girlfriend more than 20 years ago. Rodriguez shot Olimpia Fisher in the eye in 2003 at the couple’s Oklahoma City home in what police described as a “gruesome and chaotic” scene, <a href="https://www.koco.com/article/oklahoma-carlos-cuesta-rodriguez-execution/73423160">according to KOCO.</a> 
The Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board voted 3-1 in July against clemency, which Cuesta-Rodriguez told members he did not want.
&#8220;Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez violently assaulted and murdered an innocent mother,&#8221; Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond said in a statement to <a href="https://www.koco.com/article/oklahoma-carlos-cuesta-rodriguez-execution/73423160">KOCO</a>. &#8220;Olimpia’s family has endured heartbreak for 23 years. Justice will be served when the death penalty is carried out.&#8221;

The top prosecutor in Cook County, Illinois, has sounded the alarm about the county&#8217;s electronic monitoring system for over a year, and two of her most striking claims have painted a picture that&#8217;s alarming Chicagoans.
In a March 2025 <a href="https://legaltalknetwork.com/podcasts/chicago-bar/2025/03/a-conversation-with-cook-county-states-attorney-justice-eileen-oneill-burke/">interview</a> on the Legal Talk Network&#8217;s &#8220;@theBar&#8221; podcast, State&#8217;s Attorney Eileen O&#8217;Neill Burke first raised the issue of &#8220;furlough days,&#8221; a provision in Illinois&#8217; SAFE-T Act that gives people on electronic monitoring two days a week free from active tracking.
Asked whether defendants could simply leave the state during those windows, Burke didn&#8217;t mince words: &#8220;They can go anywhere if they&#8217;re on their two furlough days.&#8221;
At the time, she said roughly 140 people charged with murder or attempted murder had been on electronic monitoring within the prior six months, which she called impossible to justify given the severity of those charges.
More than a year later, in an August 2026 interview with podcaster Landon Campbell, Burke <a href="https://cwbchicago.com/2026/08/electronic-monitoring-system-is-broken-and-needs-legislative-fix-states-attorney-says.html">returned to the subject</a> with updated and more specific numbers. According to figures her office says it received from the Chief Judge&#8217;s Office, 87 people charged with murder or attempted murder and 181 people charged with sexual assault were currently on electronic monitoring in Cook County. She also said over 300 people, 10-12% of the roughly 3,200 defendants who were supposed to be on monitoring, were unaccounted for, calling it a system where officials &#8220;have no idea where they are.&#8221;
Those figures have moved around considerably over time. A chief judge&#8217;s dashboard in spring 2026 showed a combined 34 people facing murder or attempted murder charges, while a separate report on the program&#8217;s population as of June 1, 2026, put the AWOL rate closer to 10% of just over 3,000 participants.
Burke has also been clear about one nuance that often gets lost: the two furlough days aren&#8217;t a fixed allotment but a statutory minimum. The law requires at least two unmonitored days a week, not a maximum of two.
The situation grew more chaotic when Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart <a href="https://www.wbez.org/criminal-justice/2025/04/08/cook-county-states-attorney-electronic-monitoring">handed</a> the entire electronic monitoring operation over to the chief judge&#8217;s office, effective April 2025. The catch: the chief judge&#8217;s pretrial services staff aren&#8217;t law enforcement and don&#8217;t have arrest powers. If someone cuts off an ankle bracelet or skips out on their restrictions, staff has to notify police or seek a warrant through the courts, and there’s no dedicated system in place for which agency actually goes and makes the arrest.
While Burke&#8217;s comments conjure an image of ankle bracelets that simply switch off for a weekend in Vegas, the underlying law is a bit more nuanced but still troubling. Under Illinois law and Cook County Sheriff&#8217;s Office policy, defendants on pretrial home confinement don&#8217;t get a literal blank check to leave the jurisdiction. The &#8220;essential movement&#8221; provision is meant for things like court dates, medical appointments, job hunting, and groceries. In Cook County, this typically takes the form of a fixed weekly schedule. Depending on their booking number, participants get either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. free of active monitoring.
The GPS ankle bracelets are never actually powered off; they log location data around the clock. The real gap is in enforcement. As far back as 2022, Sheriff Dart&#8217;s office <a href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/2022/4/15/23026635/tom-dart-edward-maloney-cook-county-judge-safet-act-electronic-monitoring-essential-movement">maintained</a> that the law prohibited deputies from actively watching a participant&#8217;s live movements during those approved furlough hours, even though the device kept recording. That interpretation has essentially persisted as responsibility shifted from the sheriff to the chief judge&#8217;s office.
So while an accused murderer can&#8217;t legally hop a flight to Vegas without violating the terms of release, nobody is actively watching in real time where they go during their furlough hours.
It&#8217;s an administrative gap that has left prosecutors frustrated, law enforcement without a clear enforcement mechanism, and residents wondering who is keeping track.

A former top Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) official was charged Wednesday in a federal fraud case claiming the organization secretly funneled millions of dollars in donor money to informants embedded in white supremacist and other extremist groups. 
Heidi Beirich, 59, who formerly led the SPLC’s Intelligence Project tracking extremist groups, was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to submit false statements to a federally insured bank, and conspiracy to commit concealment of money laundering. Attorney General Todd Blanche mistakenly referred to her as the organization&#8217;s former chief financial officer in a press conference.
Beirich surrendered to federal authorities in California on Wednesday, per the <a href="https://www.wsj.com/politics/policy/former-southern-poverty-law-center-official-arrested-for-alleged-financial-fraud-0062956f">Wall Street Journal</a>. 
The charges are part of the Justice Department’s broader criminal case against the SPLC, which prosecutors accuse of routing donor money through accounts associated with fictitious companies and bank accounts to conceal payments to informants inside extremist organizations. Prosecutors say that between 2007 and 2023, the SPLC funneled at least $4.1 million in donor funds to sources who led, belonged to, or infiltrated extremist groups.
Blanche said Wednesday that Beirich helped facilitate the financial arrangements at the center of the case.
“As alleged, I believe she was part of the effort to open bank accounts in completely fictitious companies’ names and make payments to individuals for reasons that were not accurate as described,” Blanche said.
The latest indictment also alleges that Beirich personally oversaw payments to one informant, identified as “F-9,” who received more than $1.2 million from the SPLC over the course of the alleged scheme. Beirich was romantically involved with F-9, according to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/06/16/us-news/splc-employee-who-paid-neo-nazi-lover-1-2-million-unmasked/">New York Post</a>, and shared two bank accounts with him.
Approximately $140,000 in SPLC money allegedly flowed through a fictitious company account into the couple’s joint accounts between 2015 and 2021, accounting for roughly 66% of the money deposited into those accounts during that period. Beirich allegedly used some of the money to pay the couple’s personal living expenses. 
F-9 allegedly infiltrated the neo-Nazi National Alliance and stole approximately 25 boxes of documents from the organization. Prosecutors claim SPLC funds were subsequently used to copy the stolen documents, which Beirich used as the basis for an SPLC “Hatewatch” report. The indictment goes further, claiming that Beirich later paid another informant approximately $6,000 to falsely claim responsibility for the theft.
The <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/28551957-splc-2nd-ss-indictment-redacted/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">26-page indictment</a> alleges that the SPLC-funded informants used donor money while participating in extremist organizations, including to attend and host rallies, recruit members, establish chapters, publish racist literature and purchase materials for KKK robes, hoods and cross burnings.
Another SPLC informant, identified as F-37, allegedly received more than $270,000 while participating in the planning of the 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Prosecutors say the informant attended the rally at the SPLC&#8217;s direction and helped coordinate transportation for attendees.
FBI Director Kash Patel added Wednesday that Beirich was “at the center” of the bureau’s investigation into the organization. 
“As alleged, Heidi Beirich was at the center of our ongoing investigation into SPLC and their previously alleged criminal activity — where SPLC knowingly misled donors, who believed their money was being used to dismantle violent extremist organizations — when in fact, part of those donations were instead being used to pay senior leadership within those extremist groups,” Patel wrote on <a href="https://x.com/FBIDirectorKash/status/2087616355939844357?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2087616355939844357%7Ctwgr%5Ea5fa5c66e29cee07a8922cc2e11d7bcc365c96cc%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.foxnews.com%2Fpolitics%2Fformer-splc-official-arrested-feds-expand-case-alleged-4m-scheme-involving-extremist-groups">X</a>.
Beirich&#8217;s attorney, Michael Proctor, denied the allegations and accused the Trump administration of politically targeting his client. 
“A free and fair society does not use the justice system to silence its political opponents,” Proctor said in a statement. “Heidi Beirich has dedicated her life to fighting hate groups and extremist movements like the KKK, neo-Nazis, and other white supremacists.”
The SPLC has likewise denied wrongdoing, arguing that its informant program was intended to gather intelligence on extremist organizations and prevent violence. 
“Taking on violent hate and extremist groups is among the most dangerous work there is, and we believe it is also among the most important work we do,” the SPLC previously said in a statement to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/former-splc-official-arrested-feds-expand-case-alleged-4m-scheme-involving-extremist-groups">Fox News Digital</a>. “We remain steadfast in our fight for justice and in our commitment to ensuring the promise of the Civil Rights movement becomes a reality for all.”
Beirich left the SPLC in 2019 after roughly two decades with the organization. She later co-founded the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism and continued working as an expert on far-right extremism, including testifying before Congress.

The suspect accused of shooting a Dallas Independent School District (ISD) police officer with the officer&#8217;s own gun is an illegal immigrant who crossed the border just four years ago, The Daily Wire has learned.
Jose Santiago Pantoja Morales allegedly grabbed Officer Justin Jones&#8217; gun during a struggle last week and shot the 39-year-old officer in the leg before fleeing. Morales was later arrested and charged with aggravated assault of a public servant, while Jones is expected to survive his injuries.
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson confirmed to The Daily Wire that Morales is in the country illegally and said the Mexican national told authorities that he last entered the United States by crossing the border near Eagle Pass, Texas, four years ago.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) learned of Morales&#8217; arrest and lodged a detainer with local authorities on Friday, requesting that he be transferred to federal immigration custody following his release from local custody, the spokesperson said.
“The safest way to arrest and remove criminal illegal aliens from our streets is by lodging arrest detainers,&#8221; the DHS spokesperson told The Daily Wire. &#8220;ICE’s detainer requests are lawful and help safely transfer removable criminal aliens into federal custody.&#8221;
The shooting unfolded Thursday morning after Jones stopped to help Morales while the suspect was walking along a freeway.
Jones was flagged down around 10:39 a.m. by a man who identified himself as Morales&#8217; coworker and said Morales was walking down the freeway, according to CBS News. Jones found Morales walking on the freeway&#8217;s center median before driving him to a nearby Walmart.
Once in the store&#8217;s parking lot, Jones noticed Morales digging through his own work bag and pulling out items, CBS News reported. Jones then exited the vehicle and took one of the items from Morales before pulling him out of the back seat and trying to turn him to face the car.
The two engaged in a struggle on the ground, during which Morales allegedly grabbed Jones&#8217; gun and shot him in the leg, according to CBS News.
Morales fled the scene and was arrested roughly a mile away after allegedly trying to run from officers, according to NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth. Officers observed blood on his boots and shirt when they located him.
The suspect admitted to grabbing Jones&#8217; gun and shooting him &#8220;so he could get away,&#8221; the outlet reported.
Morales was charged with aggravated assault of a public servant and is being held on a $500,000 bond.
&#8220;ICE will do everything in its power to detain and remove this criminal illegal alien from the Dallas community following the completion of his criminal proceedings,&#8221; the spokesperson said. “Under President Trump and Secretary Mullin, criminal illegal aliens like Morales are not welcome in the United States.”

An Ohio mother and her two trans-identifying live-in lovers stand accused of torturing her 7-year-old to death after he was found bound with duct tape inside a closet at the family’s home.
Veteran homicide detective Kyle Smith testified in court on Friday, calling this case one of the worst he’s seen in his career, as FOX56 reported.
“In my 21 years of law enforcement experience, this is probably one of the most disturbing examples of child abuse that I’ve witnessed: physical beatings and blunt force injuries from striking devices on the face, torso, back, and upper and lower extremities,” Smith <a href="https://fox56.com/news/nation-world/kaitlin-evans-nessa-keaney-kirby-rankin-three-people-charged-murder-young-boy-death-oakley-endangering-children-hamilton-county-coroner-autopsy-madison-road-home-investigation-suspicious-death-court-friday-cincinnati-crime-criminal-acts">said</a>.
Seven-year-old William Evans, who was developmentally disabled, was reportedly beaten, burned, and held underwater for extended periods of time.
Kaitlin Evans, 38, and her live-in lovers Nessa Keaney, 23, and Kirby Rankin, 33, have been charged with abusing and murdering the child. Hamilton County Coroner Dr. Lakshmi Sammarco told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday that she “opened the closet door” and “just froze for a while” upon encountering the scene.
William’s cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma to the head. The child’s skull was fractured, and his arm was broken, according to the coroner. Investigators were reportedly searching for a weapon associated with the abuse, and as of the latest reporting, sexual abuse had not been ruled out.
Sammarco said the child had likely been dead for &#8220;at least a day&#8221; before he was found.
The boy’s father did not live in the home. Per FOX56, he was openly sobbing in court and said to Evans, &#8220;Willie was my life. I trusted you to care for him.”
He added, “They kept him from me for the past nine months over lies.&#8221;
Evans’ lawyer said that the evidence will prove that “another individual who has been charged with this crime caused the death of this child.”
“We believe the state’s theory as it relates to Ms. Evans will be a failure to act,” the attorney <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/08/11/us-news/mom-trans-lovers-accused-of-killing-disabled-7-year-old-son/">said</a>, per The New York Post, claiming that Evans had not committed the crime herself but had failed to stop the person who did.&lt;
Evans, Keaney, and Rankin have each been charged with murder and child endangerment. They are currently behind bars as they await trial, with bond set at $1 million, with an additional $100,000 for all three of the accused.

The federal government plans to spend up to $20 million on thousands of &#8220;conductive distraction and de-escalation devices&#8221; by March, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/ice-electric-shock-gloves-85ff746d3e0ee5f39e7a9a3f1f576252" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the Associated Press and a Monday Department of Homeland Security (DHS) <a href="https://apfs-cloud.dhs.gov/record/74524/public-print/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">notice</a>.
The technology, known as G.L.O.V.E., or Generated Low Output Voltage Emitter, has been used by other law enforcement agencies across the country to control violent suspects inside jails and in the field.
It comes as sources within ICE have described an uptick in violence by the individuals they&#8217;re trying to arrest. Since the Trump administration commenced its mass deportation campaign, ICE agents have faced a 1,300% surge in assaults and a 3,300% increase in vehicular attacks, according to DHS.
One agency source told The Daily Wire the new technology could serve as a useful deterrent during arrests.
&#8220;I think if people knew we had those it would definitely keep people from pushing and getting in our faces,&#8221; the source said.
The company behind the product, Kentucky-based Compliant Technologies LLC, says the gloves are &#8220;not a weapon, but a device used to quickly distract with small uncomfortable electrical pulses&#8221; when making contact with skin.
&#8220;The discomfort associated with the stimulation is usually effective in bringing individuals into compliance in less than three seconds and leaves no burns, marks or scars,&#8221; Compliant Technologies states on its website.
&#8220;The technology is safe as it does not penetrate the subject&#8217;s body; while also allowing other officers to grab the individual being stimulated with no fear of feedback into their bodies. CD3 technology is a great, humane, low-optics, de-escalation solution for many situations facing our men and women in uniform today,&#8221; the company says.
The shocks can&#8217;t pass through clothing, hair, metal, plastic, or fur, according to the company.
Agents must complete a training course before using the gloves and get re-certified to operate them every two years, <a href="https://www.complianttechnologies.net/terms-and-conditions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Compliant Technologies&#8217; website.
A contract solicitation for the proposed rollout is expected to be published on Friday, according to the DHS notice.
