Some of the most popular vacation spots for American tourists have been rocked by cartel violence following the weekend killing of a top cartel leader, stranding some travelers.
Mexican special forces killed longtime Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes during an operation in the southwestern town of Tapalpa, Jalisco, the Mexican government said.
Following the killing, cartel members set buses and cars ablaze and erected roadblocks in certain areas.
As a result, the State Department <a href="https://x.com/TravelGov/status/2025636042007605353" target="_blank" rel="noopener">urged</a> American citizens to &#8220;shelter in place&#8221; if they are in Jalisco State — including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara — as well as in Tamaulipas, which borders Texas, parts of Michoacán, Guerrero, and Nuevo León.
American and Canadian airlines quickly canceled flights out of Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara. By Monday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said flights were expected to resume out of both cities, <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/news/2026/02/23/mexico-safe-travel-flights/88822423007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to USA Today.
Some American tourists have taken to TikTok to share their experiences while stranded during their vacations, describing hotels placed on lockdown amid nearby violence.

One American tourist, Jim Beck, who said he has been visiting Puerto Vallarta &#8220;for almost twenty years,&#8221; <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@cnn/video/7609924460602313997?q=puerto%20vallarta&amp;t=1771858884471" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> CNN that it&#8217;s the first time he&#8217;s been &#8220;actually terrified&#8221; while there.
&#8220;We saw people running down the streets, running from the flames and stuff and the fire. And we ran back to the hotel and then that&#8217;s when they got the shelter in order place and we&#8217;ve been here all day,&#8221; Beck said.
&#8220;It&#8217;s been pretty scary &#8230; all the locals being locked up and hidden with us too, there&#8217;s a few homeless people that were brought into this hotel &#8230; so that they had some place to go too. Another tourist shared how the once-vibrant beach town appeared deserted.
&#8220;We&#8217;re locked down at the hotels. Absolutely no cars or buses on the road,&#8221; one tourist named Mikey said in a TikTok video. &#8220;There&#8217;s absolutely nobody out, the hotels are locked, nobody in or out of the resort.&#8221;
&#8220;I don&#8217;t know if we&#8217;re gonna be able to get out, but we&#8217;ll be able to keep the room if we need to stay here a few days,&#8221; he added.

Chaos swept across parts of western Mexico on Sunday following the killing of one of the country’s most feared cartel leaders in a military operation that officials say was carried out with U.S. cooperation.
Mexican special forces killed Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, the longtime head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), during an operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, according to the Mexican government. Oseguera was widely regarded as one of the most powerful drug traffickers in the world.
According to the <a href="https://x.com/EmbamexEUA/status/2025664020431151423">Mexican Embassy in the United States</a>, the United States provided “complementary information” to Mexican authorities as part of bilateral coordination.
Following the operation, cartel members engaged in violent acts in parts of Jalisco, Michoacán, and Guanajuato, setting buses on fire and erecting roadblocks in multiple cities, <a href="https://x.com/PabloLemusN/status/2025589614463823889">according to</a> Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro. In response, Lemus Navarro announced that schools throughout the state would be closed.
The U.S. State Department <a href="https://x.com/TravelGov/status/2025636042007605353">urged</a> American citizens to shelter in place if they are in Jalisco State — including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara &#8212; as well as Tamaulipas, parts of Michoacán, Guerrero, and Nuevo León.
Additional footage appeared to show fires in the parking lot of a Costco in Puerto Vallarta, a coastal city popular with American tourists that draws millions of visitors each year.
Derek Maltz, former acting administrator of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration until May, told The Daily Wire that Oseguera had long been the top cartel target for the United States.
“Obviously, El Mencho has been like public enemy number one for many years. He’s built up this global enterprise with the CJNG,” Maltz said. “We&#8217;ve been sharing intelligence against Mencho for a long time. And we share intelligence daily with our counterparts in the embassy in Mexico.”
Maltz added that the DEA, together with the Department of Homeland Security, FBI, and others are working with their Mexican counterparts “every day to go after these cartel leaders.”
Oseguera was one of Mexico’s most wanted men. The Mexican government had offered a 30 million peso reward — roughly $1.7 million — for information leading to his arrest. The United States had posted a $15 million reward, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2026/02/22/americas/mexico-kill-drug-mencho-latam-intl">reported CNN</a>.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has previously <a href="https://www.dea.gov/cartels">described</a> the cartel as among the “most powerful and ruthless criminal organizations” operating inside Mexico, calling it a key supplier of illicit fentanyl and cocaine to the United States. The DEA added that the group’s facilitators and associates operate in nearly all 50 U.S. states.
In 2022, the United States Department of Justice charged Oseguera with leading efforts to manufacture and distribute fentanyl for importation into the United States. The CJNG was later designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the Trump administration.
Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau <a href="https://x.com/DeputySecState/status/2025648742049947797">celebrated</a> the news on X.
“I’ve just been informed that Mexican security forces have killed ‘El Mencho,’ one of the bloodiest and most ruthless drug kingpins,” Landau wrote. “This is a great development for Mexico, the U.S., Latin America, and the world. The good guys are stronger than the bad guys.”
The Mexican government said various aircraft from the Air Force and the Special Immediate Reaction Force of the National Guard participated in the raid. During the operation, military personnel reportedly came under attack.
“In defense of their physical integrity, they repelled the aggression,” the embassy said. Four CJNG members were killed at the scene. Three others, severely wounded, died during an airlift to Mexico City, including Oseguera. Several additional suspects were arrested.
Authorities also seized armored vehicles and heavy weaponry, including rocket launchers capable of downing aircraft and destroying armored vehicles. Three Mexican security personnel were injured.
“From day one, President Trump and this administration has made it clear that if you’re selling drugs and moving poisonous substances into America, you’re going to be held accountable,” Maltz said. “He declared the cartels as terrorists; he’s declared fentanyl a weapon of mass destruction. So he’s doing everything to put American citizens first.”
He added that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has been highly cooperative with the Trump administration, sending 92 high-level Mexican cartel leaders and gang leaders to America to face justice.
“That has never happened in the history of our war against the cartels,” Maltz said.

Mexican drug lord Nemesio Oseguera, commonly known as &#8220;El Mencho,&#8221; has been killed in a military operation, a government source familiar with the operation told Reuters on Sunday.
An ex-police officer, Oseguera was the shadowy leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), an outfit that took its moniker from the western state of the same name that is home to Mexico&#8217;s second city, Guadalajara.
Over a relatively short period of time, the CJNG morphed into a continents-spanning criminal enterprise rivaling his former allies in the Sinaloa Cartel, the gang of captured kingpin Joaquin &#8216;El Chapo&#8217; Guzman, now in a U.S. prison.
The news of Oseguera&#8217;s death followed a federal security operation in the state of Jalisco&#8217;s city of Tapalpa, according to a post by governor Pablo Lemus Navarro on X.
After the operation, multiple vehicles were set on fire throughout Jalisco and other states, according to media outlets and officials.
Alfredo Ramirez Bedolla, the governor of the state of Michoacan, wrote on X that he had received reports of state highways being blocked as a result of the operation in Jalisco.
Oseguera&#8217;s death comes as the Trump administration has ratcheted up the fight against drug cartels and distributors in the western hemisphere. The United States, under Operation Southern Spear, has killed approximately 145 suspected drug runners in 42 strikes in the Pacific and Caribbean since September of 2025.
In January, the United States executed an operation to capture Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro and his wife. The operation was considered extremely successful, with zero U.S. military fatalities, according to the Trump administration. The raid also featured a weapon President Trump described as the &#8220;<a href="https://nypost.com/2026/01/24/us-news/trump-reveals-to-the-post-secret-discombobulator-weapon-was-crucial-to-venezuelan-raid-on-maduro/">discombobulator</a>,&#8221; which allegedly &#8220;made [enemy] equipment not work.&#8221; The president said he couldn&#8217;t go into further detail on the weapon.
Additionally, Oseguera&#8217;s death follows the capture of Ovidio Guzmán López, the son of infamous drug trafficker El Chapo, in 2023 by Mexican authorities. Guzmán López was eventually extradited to the United States to stand trial where he <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/joaquin-guzman-lopez-son-el-chapo-and-leader-sinaloa-cartel-pleads-guilty-federal-drug">pleaded guilty</a> to drug charges, according to the Department of Justice.
“The Sinaloa Cartel is a terrorist organization that has spent decades destroying American families through brutal violence and deadly drug trafficking,” said Attorney General Pam Bondi. “[The] guilty plea from El Chapo’s son is a major victory against the Sinaloa Cartel and underscores the Trump Administration’s historic, aggressive campaign to dismantle terrorist organizations that target the American people.”

Austin Tucker Martin, who was reported missing by his family on Saturday, was identified as the man armed with a shotgun and a gas can attempting to breach Mar-a-Lago, law enforcement sources <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/02/22/us-news/mar-a-lago-shotgun-wielding-madman-idd-as-north-carolina-golf-course-artist/">told</a> the New York Post.
Martin’s family has been desperately searching for Martin since Saturday, according to the Post’s review of Martin and his family&#8217;s social media accounts.
Martin’s social media reveals an obsession with drawing golf courses in the Sandhurst region of England, as well as local courses surrounding his hometown of Cameron, North Carolina.

No agents or deputies were injured during the incident, and the FBI director Kash Patel confirmed the bureau is investigating the shooting.

The Trump-Kennedy Center was targeted in what officials described as a “calculated, malicious attack” early Friday after a dark, &#8220;toxic&#8221; substance was deliberately poured across the venue’s outdoor ice rink, forcing the cancellation of a scheduled performance and prompting a law enforcement investigation.
According to Center leadership, a brown-black chemical was dumped onto the ice surface sometime overnight, severely damaging the rink and rendering it unsafe for use.
“This was not a protest — this was vandalism,” Trump-Kennedy Center officials said, emphasizing that the incident appeared deliberate and targeted.
“Today, a targeted attack on the Trump Kennedy Center vandalized and destroyed our outdoor arena, causing severe damage that we unfortunately must cancel tonight’s performance,” Roma Daravi, the Center’s vice president of public relations, said in a statement to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/exclusive-targeted-attack-vandalizes-trump-kennedy-center-outdoor-ice-rink-forces-performance-cancellation">Fox News</a> on Friday. “We have turned over video footage to the authorities who are investigating this calculated, malicious attack and will hold those responsible accountable.”
Daravi added that Center staff are “working feverishly” to complete repairs in hopes that programming can resume as soon as possible.

The exact chemical used in the attack has not yet been publicly identified. Authorities have not named a suspect or announced a motive. U.S. Park Police are investigating the incident.
The vandalism forced the <a href="https://x.com/kencen/status/2025030099389583408">cancellation</a> of Friday night’s performance by <a href="https://www.lepatinlibre.com/compagnie">Le Patin Libre</a>, a Canadian artistic skating company scheduled to perform at the venue throughout the weekend.
Richard Grenell, president of the Trump-Kennedy Center, reacted angrily to the attack, calling it part of a broader campaign of harassment directed at the institution since its leadership overhaul. “This is so sad &amp; unnecessary,” Grenell wrote on <a href="https://x.com/RichardGrenell/status/2025026315510800873">X</a> Friday morning. He accused Democrats of urging artists to cancel performances and “attacking the Center non-stop.”
“It’s a calculated campaign,” Grenell added. “And now they have mentally unstable people taking action — and vandalizing the Center.” Grenell also warned that the venue has received “serious death threats and constant harassment” in recent months, urging “commonsense Democrats” to speak out before the escalation turns deadly.
The incident comes amid major changes at the historic performing arts complex. In December 2025, the board of trustees voted unanimously to rename the venue the Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts. President Donald Trump was later elected chairman of the board. Earlier this month, Trump announced the venue would undergo a temporary closure beginning July 4 to allow for a sweeping restoration and modernization project.
Despite Friday’s vandalism, Trump-Kennedy Center officials said they remain committed to restoring the damaged arena quickly and resuming scheduled programming. Violence and destruction, leadership emphasized, “will not be tolerated,” and those responsible “will be held accountable.”

Idaho authorities say an attempted arsonist targeted a building housing offices for the Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday night.
Meridian Police Chief Tracy Basterrechea described the attack during a Thursday press conference. He <a href="https://x.com/Dapper_Det/status/2024623982096318793">said</a> someone stole an ambulance and covered it in an accelerant. The attempted arsonist then rammed it into a building that houses leased offices for Homeland Security, but was scared off before being able to ignite the fuel.
“We want to emphasize that this was a serious criminal act. The theft and destruction of an emergency vehicle not only created risk to responding personnel, but it also temporarily removed a critical medical resource from the community,” Basterrechea emphasized.
The police chief said that the suspect is still at large. During the press conference, he suggested that controversy and radical rhetoric regarding the Department of Homeland Security may have played into the attack.
“There has been a lot of rhetoric surrounding the Department of Homeland Security leasing office space at this location, and comments on social media such as, ‘property damage isn&#8217;t violence,’ is absolutely false,” said Basterrechea.
“This was absolutely an act of violence, and if the suspect had not been interrupted, there is no doubt this building would have been burned, putting the lives of first responders and others at risk,” he continued.
The attempted arsonist stole the ambulance from St. Luke’s hospital and crashed it into a building owned by St. Luke’s Health System in Meridian. St. Luke’s Health System had rented space in the damaged building to the Department of Homeland Security, and the lease has been at the center of some heated public debate, according to the <a href="https://wtop.com/national/2026/02/police-in-idaho-search-for-suspect-who-stole-ambulance-drove-into-building-that-houses-dhs-offices/">Associated Press</a>.
The attack comes at a time when federal immigration enforcement is facing a steep rise in threats and attacks as agents attempt to carry out President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda and enforce federal law. Earlier this month, a DHS spokeswoman presented several data points showing the rapid jump in violence.

The reward for information in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of &#8220;Today&#8221; show host Savannah Guthrie, has been significantly increased thanks to a Wisconsin attorney.
Michael Hupy, president of Milwaukee Crime Stoppers, sent a $100,000 check through Crime Stoppers to 88-Crime in Tucson in hopes of generating new leads in the case.
88-Crime is Tucson&#8217;s Crime Stoppers chapter. Crime Stoppers is a nonprofit organization that offers rewards for anonymous tips that lead to arrests. The 88-Crime reward now stands at $102,500 thanks to the boost from Hupy and Milwaukee Crime Stoppers. The FBI is also offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to Nancy Guthrie&#8217;s whereabouts or an arrest in the case.
Though Tucson is nearly 2,000 miles from Milwaukee, where Hupy is based, he felt compelled to help.
&#8220;This case stuck out to me because of the age of the person and the need for medical treatment,&#8221; Hupy told The Daily Wire. &#8220;We have an 84-year-old woman who was left without taking her pills. That&#8217;s not a good situation. I said I better do something.&#8221;
Hupy said time is critical, and with the search entering its third week, more tips are needed.
&#8220;I think if we had motivated someone at the beginning, we might have a solution,&#8221; Hupy said.
Unlike many reward programs, Crime Stoppers guarantees tipsters complete anonymity, even through the payout process.

Guthrie has been missing since February 1, when the grandmother was taken from her home. The FBI and the Pima County Sheriff&#8217;s Office are working to locate her and identify a person who was seen on her front stoop.

British police arrested former Prince Andrew on Thursday in connection with his ties to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. 
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who turned 66 on the day of his arrest, was taken into custody by the Thames Valley Police on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The disgraced former prince was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/prince-andrew-will-be-stripped-of-titles-moved-out-of-royal-residence-buckingham-palace">stripped</a> of his royal titles in October 2025 following revelations about his ties to Epstein. 
Police provided limited details about the arrest, citing British law, but said they were conducting searches at homes in Berkshire and Norfolk. According to the BBC, law enforcement said &#8220;it was assessing a complaint over the alleged sharing of confidential material&#8221; with Epstein. This confidential material <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/02/19/world-news/ex-prince-andrew-mountbatten-arrested-for-misconduct-in-public-office-over-his-links-to-jeffrey-epstein/">reportedly</a> included trade documents. One <a href="https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%209/EFTA00751685.pdf">email</a> from the Epstein files released by the Justice Department showed Mountbatten-Windsor appearing to forward Epstein official trade reports for Hong Kong, Singapore, and Vietnam. 
“We understand the significant public interest in this case, and we will provide updates at the appropriate time,” Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright said. “Following a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office.”
If convicted, Mountbatten-Windsor could face life in prison.

Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre, who died by apparent suicide last year, alleged that Mountbatten-Windsor sexually abused her when she was 17. He previously <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-60667111">settled</a> a civil lawsuit brought by Giuffre in 2022 without admitting wrongdoing.
“He knows what he’s done and he can attest to that,” Giuffre said in 2019. “He knows exactly what he’s done and I hope he comes clean about it.”
Giuffre&#8217;s family welcomed the arrest.
&#8220;Today, our broken hearts have been lifted at the news that no one is above the law, not even royalty,&#8221; they said. &#8220;He was never a prince.&#8221;
&#8220;For survivors everywhere, Virginia did this for you,” they added. 
In a statement, King Charles III called for a fair investigation into Mountbatten-Windsor. 
&#8220;I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office. What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities,” he said. 
&#8220;In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation,” the king added. “Let me state clearly: the law must take its course. As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all.”

President Donald Trump suggested on Wednesday that Atlanta might be the next American city to see a surge of federal resources and personnel to help rein in rampant crime.
Trump floated the possibility during a Black History Month event at the White House on Wednesday afternoon: “You need help in Atlanta.&#8221;
&#8220;Atlanta. Atlanta. We could take care of Atlanta. I&#8217;ll tell you what, you oughta get them to call me. We could take care of Atlanta so fast,” he said to applause. “They don&#8217;t want to call. They don’t want to. They don’t want to call cause they don’t want to admit it, and they’ll never fix it themself,” he added.
“Don&#8217;t forget, we move people out. We just don’t go in and, you know, be tough guys. We move people out. We take career criminals and we get them out, we bring them back to the country from where they came. And think of it, 90% of the crime is caused by 2% of the people. So when you get the criminals out, you solve a lot of problems,” he continued.
The Daily Wire reached out to the City of Atlanta for comment, but has not yet received a response. The Trump administration has sent National Guard troops, as well as other federal law enforcement agencies, to cities like Washington, D.C., New Orleans, and Memphis in hopes of bringing down high crime rates.
There has been significant pushback in many blue cities over federal surges, but the president made it clear in a Dec. 31 Truth Social post that he is undeterred: it’s “only a question of time” before federal authorities “come back &#8230; when crime begins to soar again,” he wrote, according to <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2026/02/13/national-guard-deployments-updates/88646816007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">USA Today</a>.
“We are removing the National Guard from Chicago, Los Angeles, and Portland, despite the fact that CRIME has been greatly reduced by having these great Patriots in those cities, and ONLY by that fact. Portland, Los Angeles, and Chicago were GONE if it weren’t for the Federal Government stepping in,” Trump posted to Truth Social on Dec. 31.
&#8220;It is hard to believe that these Democrat Mayors and Governors, all of whom are greatly incompetent, would want us to leave, especially considering the great progress that has been made???” he added.
Although murders have gone down in the Georgia city, robberies and assaults have been on the rise, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/atlanta/news/homicide-rate-drops-in-atlanta-but-rising-assaults-and-robberies-leave-police-department-concerned/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CBS Atlanta</a> reported in January.
Trump is scheduled to visit Rome, Georgia, an hour northwest of Atlanta, for an economy-focused address. Rome is a part of the district left vacant by former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who resigned from Congress earlier this year after a public falling out with the president. A special election is set for March 10, with a runoff to follow on April 7 if none of the candidates in the open race obtain over half of the vote. The president has endorsed Republican Clay Fuller to be Greene’s successor.
“He is strongly supported by the most Highly Respected MAGA Warriors in Georgia, and many Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives,” Trump posted to Truth Social on Feb. 4.

Authorities say an illegal immigrant fleeing Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in Savannah, Georgia, caused a vehicle collision on Monday that resulted in the death of a beloved special education teacher.
ICE agents were attempting to pull over Guatemalan national Oscar Vasquez Lopez, 38, when he made &#8220;a reckless U-turn&#8221; and ran a red light before colliding with Dr. Linda Davis&#8217; vehicle, <a href="https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/deadly-evasion-illegal-immigrant-flees-ice-crashes-car-and-kills-innocent-driver" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the federal agency. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This vehicular homicide is an absolute tragedy and deadly consequence of politicians and the media constantly demonizing ICE officers and encouraging those here illegally to resist arrest — a felony,” Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.
“These dangerous tactics are putting people’s lives at risk. Fleeing from and resisting federal law enforcement is not only a crime but extraordinarily dangerous and puts oneself, our officers and innocent civilians at risk. Now, an innocent bystander has lost their life,&#8221; McLaughlin added.
Vasquez Lopez unlawfully crossed the border at an unknown time, according to DHS. He then received a deportation order in 2024.
On Monday, DHS said Vasquez Lopez was in custody at a local hospital, where he was being treated for minor injuries. The Chatham County Police Department has charged him with vehicular homicide and multiple traffic offenses, including reckless driving, driving without a valid license, and failure to obey traffic control devices.
Davis&#8217;s employer, Hesse K-8 School, released a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Hessek8school/posts/pfbid0FHRT7wrfKdFP2oKuVWmu6b7cD631f5MnaeMgpSfmi4TtuiC51yb6jqinFzHg8yRfl?ref=embed_post" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> on Facebook on Monday, describing the deceased as &#8220;a beloved member of our school family,&#8221; adding that &#8220;her loss has affected us deeply.&#8221;
The crash occurred less than a mile from the school, which was holding a work day for teachers while students stayed home for the President&#8217;s Day holiday, <a href="https://www.wjcl.com/article/ice-chase-crash-savannah-georgia/70390635" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to local news channel WJCL.
&#8220;We all should expect and try to understand that there will be a variety of emotions and responses as to what has occurred. The most important thing we can do is to be supportive and encourage an open expression of feelings,&#8221; the school said.
The school is offering counseling for students and staff &#8220;who need special attention and support&#8221; in the wake of Davis&#8217; &#8220;tragic&#8221; death.
Several community members shared their condolences in the comments on the school&#8217;s Facebook post.
One woman said Davis had &#8220;the most beautiful and infectious smile and personality that lit up everything and everyone around her.&#8221; Another who said she grew up with Davis described her as an &#8220;amazing&#8221; sibling to her three sisters.

Two people were killed and at least three others critically injured after a man who identifies as a woman opened fire at a high school hockey game in Rhode Island.
Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2kkgm-QJmU" target="_blank" rel="noopener">confirmed</a> in a Monday evening press conference that Robert Dorgan, who goes by the name Roberta Esposito, killed himself after what she said was likely a targeted shooting stemming from a family dispute. A <a href="https://x.com/bennyjohnson/status/2023568697302880622?s=46&amp;t=o-U3qwC25WnWaylJ0oeG7Q" target="_blank" rel="noopener">clip</a> circulating on social media appears to show Dorgan&#8217;s daughter leaving a police station and telling reporters that her father &#8220;shot my family&#8221; and &#8220;he&#8217;s dead now.&#8221; The woman added that Dorgan &#8220;has mental health issues,&#8221; and &#8220;was very sick.&#8221;
Court records from 2020 <a href="https://www.wpri.com/target-12/pawtucket-shooters-gender-identity-tied-to-past-family-disputes-court-records-show/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">confirm</a> that Dorgan had undergone gender reassignment surgery. Dorgan claimed to North Providence Police at the time that his father-in-law attempted to throw him out of the house following his surgery. Around that time, Dorgan&#8217;s wife filed for divorce, initially citing “gender reassignment surgery, narcissistic + personality disorder traits&#8221; as the reason before crossing them out and writing &#8220;irreconcilable differences.&#8221;
Authorities have not publicly identified the victims, nor have they confirmed the precise relationships involved in the apparent family dispute. Police have also not released information about the weapon used.
This is the latest shooting perpetrated by a transgender-identifying attacker. Earlier this month, a man who identified as a woman and wore a dress <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/youtube-confirms-trans-themed-page-is-linked-to-canada-mass-shooting-suspect?author=Leif+Le+Mahieu&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Canada+School+Attacker+Was+Trans+Identifying+Man%2C+Police+Confirm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">killed</a> 10 people at a Canadian school. Transgender-identifying shooters perpetrated deadly attacks on schools in Nashville in 2023 and in Minneapolis in 2025. The latter attack was the subject of the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-last-questions-charlie-kirk-answered-were-about-a-trans-gun-ban-that-initiative-is-stalled" target="_blank" rel="noopener">last question</a> Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was asked when he was assassinated in September.
Kirk&#8217;s killer, Tyler Robinson, was, at the time of the attack, living with his &#8220;transgender partner,&#8221; a man named Lance Twiggs, who identifies as a woman. As The Daily Wire&#8217;s Mary Margaret Olohan reported this week, though the Trump administration was reportedly considering a ban on gun ownership for transgender-identifying people in the wake of the Minneapolis shooting, that ban has seemingly stalled. A source familiar with the Trump administration’s thinking said that the topic is not something that they have heard discussed since The Daily Wire’s original reporting in September.
Monday&#8217;s <a href="https://x.com/SpencerHakimian/status/2023516920973316389" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shooting</a> occurred at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena during a game involving multiple high school teams. Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2kkgm-QJmU" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> the suspected gunman is also dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Federal authorities, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, responded to assist state and local law enforcement at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena on Monday. Police said shots were fired inside the arena while spectators and players were present for what had been scheduled as a senior night celebration for the Blackstone Valley Schools cooperative hockey team.
“You don’t know what’s going on at first,” Melissa Dunn, the mother of one player, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/video/woman-says-she-re-entered-pawtucket-rhode-island-ice-rink-during-shooting-to-find-her-son/?hsfs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> reporters. “You just hear the loud noises … then you realize something is very wrong.”
A player who was on the ice at the time said multiple shots were fired and that players ran to the locker room for safety.
“We pressed against the door and just tried to stay safe,” he <a href="https://www.wpri.com/news/local-news/blackstone-valley/coventry-hockey-player-on-ice-during-deadly-shooting-im-overwhelmed/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “It was very scary.”
Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien called the shooting “a terrible tragedy” and said the city is working closely with law enforcement and the Rhode Island attorney general’s office.
“What should have been a joyful occasion … was instead marked by violence and fear,” Grebien <a href="https://x.com/cityofpawtucket/status/2023549722959770109?s=46&amp;t=pc9rx8l9zLnkazX2Y6G_TQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “Tonight, Pawtucket is a city in mourning.”

A man with a years-long criminal record allegedly pushed one woman onto the subway tracks in New York City before punching another woman in the face on Saturday.
Curtis Signal, 25, was arrested at a nearby homeless shelter and charged with assault, harassment, and reckless endangerment, the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/02/14/us-news/women-pushed-onto-nyc-subway-tracks-punched-in-face/">reported</a>.
The first woman, 51, suffered broken ribs after being pushed. The second woman, 43, suffered a busted lip. The attack took place on the R subway line in Brooklyn.
Signal is on probation until June 2027, the Post reported. In 2023, he allegedly punched a 67-year-old woman in the face, and punched a police officer one week later. Before that, he allegedly attacked a 31-year-old woman at a doctor’s office, and he was charged with assault after hitting his 13-year-old sister.
Al Rivera, who heard about the subway attack from a friend of one of the victims, told the Post that Signal would probably be released.
“He did wrong to those people and he is not going to stop until someone sends him to the cemetery,” Rivera said. “He’s not going to stay in jail. It’s a rotating door.”

Despite New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s <a href="https://www.nyc.gov/mayors-office/news/2026/01/mayor-zohran-mamdani-inaugural-address">promise</a> to “deliver an agenda of safety, affordability, and abundance,” crime on New York City&#8217;s transit system has increased 17% since last year, the Post reported.
That number included a 9% increase in assaults, with 71 this year compared to 65 last year, and robberies have seen a 58% increase. A man was killed at a Bronx subway station on Tuesday, the first subway murder of the year.
One woman, Yolene Martinez, told the Post that these attacks make her afraid to take the train into Manhattan for work.
“Every time I hear something like this, I get more fearful,” Martinez said. “It’s happening too often — someone gets pushed on the tracks, someone gets slashed, someone gets shot.”
Mamdani recently received criticism for saying that a mentally ill man who attacked police officers with a knife should receive mental health treatment instead of being prosecuted. Police had shot the alleged attacker after he charged them with a large kitchen knife, Fox News <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/nyc-mayor-mamdani-under-fire-defending-knife-wielding-suspect-over-police-officers">reported</a>.

Curtis Sliwa, former New York City mayoral candidate and long-time New Yorker, said part of the problem lies in the city’s sanctuary status — diverting resources to illegal aliens instead of the homeless — but he added that Mamdani is still partially to blame.
“I don’t see any of the homeless outreach workers that the mayor keeps talking about,” he said.
