A McGregor, Texas, couple awoke in the middle of the night to a horrifying discovery: a naked illegal immigrant hiding in their children&#8217;s bedroom.
The children&#8217;s father got up after his wife alerted him to someone in their daughter&#8217;s room early in the morning on September 15, <a href="https://www.fox44news.com/news/local-news/mclennan-county/father-finds-naked-man-in-daughter-and-sons-bedroom/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Fox 44. That&#8217;s when he allegedly found the naked illegal immigrant, Mexican national David Refugio Lopez, 28, in the closet near his son and daughter, who were also not wearing clothes.
When police arrived at the home, they found the victims&#8217; father blocking Lopez in a closet, Fox 44 reported. Lopez had been allowed to get dressed before authorities arrived.
Police swiftly arrested Lopez, who came to the United States illegally in 2002 as a child, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) told The Daily Wire. Lopez initially allegedly withheld his identity from authorities, leading to an additional charge in his case.
According to an arrest affidavit cited by Fox 44, police were told the daughter had let the man into the house without her parents&#8217; approval, and she repeatedly said there had been no sexual contact.
Lopez is charged with two counts of indecency with a child, exposure, burglary of a habitation, and failure to identify, according to jail records. He is being held in the McLennan County Jail on a $60,000 bond.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged a detainer with the jail on the day of Lopez&#8217;s arrest, asking local authorities to transfer him to federal custody with the goal of deporting him when they release him.
&#8220;We are calling on Texas to honor our detainer,&#8221; a Homeland Security spokesperson said in a statement. &#8220;All of his claims will be heard by an immigration judge, and he will receive due process. This administration will not ignore the rule of law.&#8221;
&#8220;Under President Trump and Secretary Mullin, ICE is targeting the worst of the worst. Our message is clear: if you come into our country illegally and break our laws, we will find you, we will arrest you, and we will deport you,&#8221; the spokesperson added.

Instead, in late June, the mayor signed a <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.police1.com/nyc-budget-drops-funding-for-nypd-headcount-increase__;!!F0Stn7g!BdPUF_HfZGQa3j-t3jQK7AcGaFNsOavanx22XtxpHTseU1swVAApzwxlFnXe5VrYdyc1Wkc2Z_Eo3-Ygg4rYq5s$">budget</a> that cut 395 uniformed NYPD positions from his May proposal. The city is still struggling to rebuild its police force. Other departments face the same struggle. The Police Executive Research Forum’s 2026 <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.policeforum.org/trending23may26__;!!F0Stn7g!BdPUF_HfZGQa3j-t3jQK7AcGaFNsOavanx22XtxpHTseU1swVAApzwxlFnXe5VrYdyc1Wkc2Z_Eo3-YgNortD50$">survey</a> found staffing still below early-2020 levels, with retirements up 16.4% in 2025 despite improved hiring. These shortages result in heavier workloads and more overtime, making it harder and costlier in the long run to keep the officers who remain.
An understaffed department also has less time to prevent the next crime. Every case file I opened as a federal prosecutor recorded a crime nobody was there to prevent. The America First Policy Institute’s Back the Blue <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.americafirstpolicy.com/issues/back-the-blue-a-policy-roadmap-for-better-staffed-better-supported-law-enforcement__;!!F0Stn7g!BdPUF_HfZGQa3j-t3jQK7AcGaFNsOavanx22XtxpHTseU1swVAApzwxlFnXe5VrYdyc1Wkc2Z_Eo3-YgX9VRZTc$">roadmap</a> explains why staffing matters. Researchers estimate that every <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=10.1257*aeri.20200792__;Lw!!F0Stn7g!BdPUF_HfZGQa3j-t3jQK7AcGaFNsOavanx22XtxpHTseU1swVAApzwxlFnXe5VrYdyc1Wkc2Z_Eo3-YggM-pGNg$">10 to 17</a> additional officers save one life annually, with twice the benefit per capita for black residents as for white residents. Washington, D.C., offers a recent example of that prevention at work. President Trump’s August 2025 deployment added roughly 2,000 National Guard members, more than doubling the visible uniformed presence. A Niskanen Center study linked that presence to a <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.niskanencenter.org/washington-dc-crime-decline-and-its-lessons-for-american-policing/__;!!F0Stn7g!BdPUF_HfZGQa3j-t3jQK7AcGaFNsOavanx22XtxpHTseU1swVAApzwxlFnXe5VrYdyc1Wkc2Z_Eo3-YgHuHdMSw$">24%</a> reduction in opportunistic property crime over the first six months. During the broader federal law-enforcement surge’s first year, the U.S. Attorney’s Office <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/pr/one-year-after-federal-law-enforcement-surge-dc-safer-crime-declines-sharply__;!!F0Stn7g!BdPUF_HfZGQa3j-t3jQK7AcGaFNsOavanx22XtxpHTseU1swVAApzwxlFnXe5VrYdyc1Wkc2Z_Eo3-YgejfTnsI$">reported</a> carjackings down 64%, robberies down 33%, and homicides down 45% compared with the preceding year.
New York has shown the positive impact law enforcement can have not only on public safety, but in restoring dignity to the most vulnerable in its communities. Since 2024, “PATH” teams (Partnership Assistance for Transit Homelessness) have paired NYPD transit officers with city nurses, providing homeless and mentally ill people meals, shelter, or care more than <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.nyc.gov/mayors-office/news/2025/10/mayor-adams-celebrates-one-year-anniversary-of-path-co-response-__;!!F0Stn7g!BdPUF_HfZGQa3j-t3jQK7AcGaFNsOavanx22XtxpHTseU1swVAApzwxlFnXe5VrYdyc1Wkc2Z_Eo3-YgMW_yAqY$">6,100 times</a> by October 2025. Subway crime fell to a <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://digital.ny.gov/state-of-the-state-book-2026/__;!!F0Stn7g!BdPUF_HfZGQa3j-t3jQK7AcGaFNsOavanx22XtxpHTseU1swVAApzwxlFnXe5VrYdyc1Wkc2Z_Eo3-YgnCDKUDE$">16-year low</a> in 2025, excluding pandemic years. Yet the mayor’s policies pledge to “<a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.cityandstateny.com/policy/2026/02/mamdani-has-lot-explaining-do-his-department-community-safety/411181/__;!!F0Stn7g!BdPUF_HfZGQa3j-t3jQK7AcGaFNsOavanx22XtxpHTseU1swVAApzwxlFnXe5VrYdyc1Wkc2Z_Eo3-YgY5TAwGQ$">end co-response teams</a>” like PATH and hand the work to unarmed civilian “transit ambassadors.” His March order creating an Office of Community Safety left the future of police-nurse teams <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.cityandstateny.com/policy/2026/03/3-big-questions-about-mamdanis-new-office-community-safety/412261/__;!!F0Stn7g!BdPUF_HfZGQa3j-t3jQK7AcGaFNsOavanx22XtxpHTseU1swVAApzwxlFnXe5VrYdyc1Wkc2Z_Eo3-YgB5b1nCc$">unexplained</a>.
Then, on August 31, a woman with prior mental-health-related police encounters <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://ag.ny.gov/press-release/2026/attorney-general-james-office-special-investigation-opens-investigation-25__;!!F0Stn7g!BdPUF_HfZGQa3j-t3jQK7AcGaFNsOavanx22XtxpHTseU1swVAApzwxlFnXe5VrYdyc1Wkc2Z_Eo3-YgjBz4ujM$">stabbed two people</a>, killing one, before officers shot her after a Taser failed. Asked whether civilian responders should have gone instead, the mayor <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.nytimes.com/2026/09/06/nyregion/nypd-brooklyn-bridge-times-square-shooting.html__;!!F0Stn7g!BdPUF_HfZGQa3j-t3jQK7AcGaFNsOavanx22XtxpHTseU1swVAApzwxlFnXe5VrYdyc1Wkc2Z_Eo3-Ygp5wzaZQ$">said</a> that model “would not be applicable when there is the threat of violence.” He is right. The city needs both treatment for mental illness and officers who can stop an attack, but his policies say otherwise.
Mayor Mamdani can point to the murder numbers, and should. Murders fell <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.nyc.gov/site/nypd/news/PR014/nypd-safest-summer-shooting-incidents-shooting-victims-murders-recorded__;!!F0Stn7g!BdPUF_HfZGQa3j-t3jQK7AcGaFNsOavanx22XtxpHTseU1swVAApzwxlFnXe5VrYdyc1Wkc2Z_Eo3-YgJi8sj7Y$">24%</a> through August, a major credit to the NYPD and other law enforcement agencies/first responders serving the city. However, the murder <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.americafirstpolicy.com/issues/2025-fbi-crime-stats-one-pager__;!!F0Stn7g!BdPUF_HfZGQa3j-t3jQK7AcGaFNsOavanx22XtxpHTseU1swVAApzwxlFnXe5VrYdyc1Wkc2Z_Eo3-YgcRAIpu8$">decline</a> extends nationally and masks the larger, underlying issues with public safety in New York City.
Compared with 2019, before the pandemic-era crime surge, New York’s violent-crime rate was <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://cde.ucr.cjis.gov/LATEST/webapp/*/pages/downloads__;Iw!!F0Stn7g!BdPUF_HfZGQa3j-t3jQK7AcGaFNsOavanx22XtxpHTseU1swVAApzwxlFnXe5VrYdyc1Wkc2Z_Eo3-Yg839CE0Q$">15%</a> higher in 2025, and car theft nearly tripled. The NYPD also logged <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.vitalcitynyc.org/nyc-crime-midyear-2026-felony-assaults-rape-murder/__;!!F0Stn7g!BdPUF_HfZGQa3j-t3jQK7AcGaFNsOavanx22XtxpHTseU1swVAApzwxlFnXe5VrYdyc1Wkc2Z_Eo3-YgYpBsTiY$">nearly 57,000</a> more complaints in the first half of 2026 than in the same period in 2019, including more theft and harassment reports.
On September 1, Mayor Mamdani stood with Governor Kathy Hochul as she <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.nyc.gov/mayors-office/news/2026/09/transcript--mayor-mamdani-joins-governor-hochul-to-demand-releas__;!!F0Stn7g!BdPUF_HfZGQa3j-t3jQK7AcGaFNsOavanx22XtxpHTseU1swVAApzwxlFnXe5VrYdyc1Wkc2Z_Eo3-YgUoWxfTw$">accused</a> President Trump of “defunding the police” over $87 million in counterterrorism grants. While that is a reduction from prior-year levels, New York was still awarded <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-hochul-announces-nearly-140-million-federal-funding-counterterrorism-and-emergency__;!!F0Stn7g!BdPUF_HfZGQa3j-t3jQK7AcGaFNsOavanx22XtxpHTseU1swVAApzwxlFnXe5VrYdyc1Wkc2Z_Eo3-YgCofIOz8$">$133 million </a>for fiscal 2025. Meanwhile, FEMA says the state has over <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/new-york-counterterrorism-funding-kathy-hochul-donald-trump/__;!!F0Stn7g!BdPUF_HfZGQa3j-t3jQK7AcGaFNsOavanx22XtxpHTseU1swVAApzwxlFnXe5VrYdyc1Wkc2Z_Eo3-YgRcjBfao$">$300 million</a> unspent. Before blaming Washington, the mayor should explain why his own $125.8 billion budget dropped hundreds of police positions.
More officers mean more opportunities to prevent crimes and reach people who need help. Mamdani should restore the hiring plan, pay competitively, and keep officers paired with nurses where both are needed. New Yorkers told him what they wanted. He should try listening.

An illegal immigrant carried out a Ponzi scheme that defrauded Taylor Swift&#8217;s husband and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, among other wealthy figures, to the tune of $35 million, according to multiple reports.
U.S. District Judge Zachary M. Bluestone sentenced Siddharth Jawahar, 38, to 11 years behind bars and ordered him to pay $31.35 million in restitution to the victims, the Justice Department said in a Tuesday <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-edmo/pr/illegal-immigrant-sentenced-11-years-prison-multimillion-dollar-ponzi-scheme">statement</a>.
Kelce was named as a victim in the case during a recent court hearing, <a href="https://www.firstalert4.com/2026/09/15/chiefs-tight-end-travis-kelce-named-victim-multi-million-dollar-fraud-case/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to KMOV. A 2021 Forbes <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/timcasey/2021/06/14/how-orlando-magic-guard-gary-harris-grew-to-enjoy-venture-capital-technology-real-estate-and-other-business-topics/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">article</a> also identified Kelce as an investor in Swiftarc Ventures.
Jawahar ran Swiftarc Capital LLC, a Texas-based investment firm, which he used to funnel his clients&#8217; funds into a single investment, Philip Morris Pakistan (PMP), in 2015, according to the Justice Department. He eventually placed 99% of his clients&#8217; funds into PMP.
Jawahar did not notify investors when PMP&#8217;s value plunged and falsely claimed they were making a profit, according to the Justice Department. He also led investors to believe he&#8217;d invested their money into specific companies, but never actually did.
Between July 2016 and December 2023, Jawahar received more than $35 million from Swiftarc investors, but only roughly $10 million of those funds were invested, according to the Justice Department.
He used new investors&#8217; money to repay the older investors and fund his personal travel on private jets, luxury hotel stays, a luxury apartment in Austin and New York City, memberships at multiple private clubs across the country, clothing shopping sprees and expensive meals at fancy restaurants.
Following his indictment, Jawahar tried coaching one of his victims into giving a &#8220;favorable&#8221; statement to federal investigators, the Justice Department said. He also lied about his status as an illegal immigrant and his finances, and tried to have his sister wipe his phone of evidence.
Jawahar pleaded guilty in January to three counts of wire fraud.
The illegal immigrant also managed more than a dozen other investment firms, according to the Justice Department.

An Arizona man accused of sexually exploiting minors fainted to the courtroom floor after finding out he could be tossed behind bars for up to 100 years over felony child sexual exploitation charges.
Joshua James Lozano, a 42-year-old hospital worker from Glendale, hit the deck at the podium inside a Phoenix courtroom during a dramatic 5 a.m. hearing following an extensive Glendale police probe into explicit online material, per the <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/09/15/us-news/alleged-arizona-pervert-faints-in-court-after-hearing-he-faces-century-long-prison-time-video/">New York Post</a>.
Lozano’s legs gave out as Maricopa County prosecutor Ashley Stetson laid out his possible fate: 10 felony counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, each carrying a mandatory 10-year prison sentence to be served back-to-back under state law.
Under Arizona&#8217;s <a href="https://hoodline.com/2026/09/glendale-man-collapses-in-court-after-facing-100-years-on-child-sex-charges/#:~:text=A%2042%2Dyear%2Dold%20Glendale%20man%20collapsed%20at%20the,on%20Sept.%2010%20and%20remains%20in%20custody">strict statutes</a> on crimes against children, judges must hand down consecutive sentences rather than allowing time to run concurrently. That strict sentencing formula left the hospital worker staring down a potential century in prison.
Lozano’s sudden collapse brought the early-morning proceedings to a halt, forcing the judge to call in jail medical personnel to tend to Lozano. Under state rules, the medical emergency permitted the court to pause proceedings beyond the usual 24-hour deadline for initial appearances.
Prior to the courtroom drama, investigators revealed that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children <a href="https://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/glendale-man-collapses-court-podium-after-learning-he-faces-100-years-child-sex-crimes">flagged</a> multiple CyberTips from Lozano’s internet service provider earlier this year. Detectives executed search warrants on Verizon Wireless and Metronet, tracing an online account, phone number, and IP addresses directly to the suspect. Stetson further alleged that the hospital worker had been communicating directly with underage minors online.
Lozano, who cleans surgical equipment at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center in Sun City West and has lived in Glendale with his wife for eight years, also has past arrests for DUI and driving on a suspended license.
Defense attorney Michael Tamou asked for a lower $50,000 bond by pointing to the defendant&#8217;s local ties. But the judge was having none of it, siding with prosecutors and locking down a $150,000 secured bond.
If Lozano raises the cash to post bail, his freedom will come with heavy restrictions. He will be forced to wear an electronic leg monitor, banned from possessing a smartphone, barred from accessing the internet outside legal matters, and strictly forbidden from contacting any minors.
Lozano remains in custody and is set for his next court date on September 21.

Yet, hundreds of women at the courthouse and thousands more in the digital sewer of social media supported a murderer — unabashedly, proudly, and loudly. When the trial concluded in a mistrial due to a lone holdout, Juror #5, a collective gasp rippled across this deranged sisterhood. It is an indictment of our culture that only one person possessed the courage of his convictions to stand up to a jury room ready to grant Lindsay Clancy more compassion and sympathy than the three children she ruthlessly killed.
After the trial, one juror recalled evidence proving that Clancy “loved her children” and was, by all accounts, a “good mother.” Her kids were unavailable for comment.
Another juror suggested the prosecutors did more harm than good by “just not thinking about Lindsay.” Apparently, Juror #5 missed the memo that the perpetrator should be the primary focus of compassion.
Now this man, who should be lauded as a hero, has joined the ranks of the “problematic.” This is the crux of our modern crisis: society&#8217;s hero-villain dynamic is completely inverted. We arrived here because ordinary people decided it was best to prioritize a weaponized form of &#8220;compassion&#8221; where no one should ever feel unwelcome, where standards and judgments are dismissed as cruel, and where villains are merely misunderstood victims of an underlying systemic failure. This heroic juror is treated as the trial’s villain simply for daring to see Lindsay Clancy not as a victim, but as the murderer she confessed to being.
When a mother brutally and cruelly murders her own three young children, it is the act of a monster. I have three kids who are nearly the exact ages Cora, Dawson, and Callan were when their mother strangled them to death. This is the architecture of nightmares: that the last thing these precious children experienced was the person who gave them life, snuffing it out. In an America where right and wrong were objective and shared principles, justice for these three babies would have been swift and definitive. Instead, it devolved into a circus — a symptom of the clown-show society we have built on the ruins of our own complacency and indifference.
Twenty-five years after 9/11, it isn’t a foreign power or nuclear war that threatens to end us, but the systematic destruction of our heroes and the slow death of common sense to indulge a false concept of “inclusivity.” This brand of inclusivity is merely cover for codependent and cowardly people to hide behind so they never have to appear mean. Those who crave power and control have weaponized this weakness against an America that traded strength and confidence for peace without defense, and love without boundaries.
As Walker Percy wrote, “You live in a deranged age, more deranged than usual, because in spite of great scientific and technological advances, man has not the faintest idea of who he is or what he is doing.” America has lost the plot. We no longer distinguish the heroes from the villains. Three thousand innocent Americans die in the terrorist attacks of September 11, and our primary anxiety must be caution over “Islamophobia.” A nation’s cities are burned after a street criminal dies, and we apologize to the arsonists. Daniel Penny defends passengers against a violent threat, and he is the one put on trial. A woman murders her children, and we shield her behind a clinical label while demanding public sympathy. We end the lives of thousands of innocent babies in the womb and call it choice. We allow men and boys to invade women’s spaces and call it inclusion. We graduate millions of poor and minority kids from public schools without teaching them how to read or write and call it equity.
What America needs is to stop the nonsense. We must quit the empathy addiction. We must defend the heroes and condemn the villains. We need an America where Juror #5 is the norm, not the anomaly. Percy was right; we live in a deranged age. If we refuse to correct course, we walk a straight line toward the world Michel Houellebecq envisioned in Submission: “No doubt the Romans had felt that theirs was an eternal civilization, right up to the moment their empire fell apart. Were they suicides, too?&#8221;

Footage of a heroic waiter tackling a deranged gunman surfaced after an Ohio jury found a man guilty of attempting to murder his ex-wife.
Matthew Exton was convicted last week of attempted murder after he walked into a Toledo restaurant in April 2025 and pointed a handgun at his ex-wife Kayda Valone. Surveillance footage from the incident shows Exton fumbling with the safety on his gun before waiter Tracy Cole, Jr. tackled him and brought him to the floor with the help of other bystanders.
The incident took place during the opening night of Sabira, an Italian restaurant, after Exton saw Valone and members of her family sitting at a table. The whole encounter was captured on surveillance footage from the restaurant that was played during the trial. 
“Nothing in their training and soft openings at the restaurant could have prepared the staff for what walked through that door,” Lucas County Prosecutor Julia Bates said, <a href="https://www.toledoblade.com/local/2026/09/04/exton-removed-from-courtroom-disrupting-closing-arguments/stories/20260904083">according</a> to the Toledo Blade. “The defendant did not come with the intention of having a meal. He came with anger in him and with the intention to commit a public execution of his ex-wife at the restaurant that day.”
During the trial, the 43-year-old Exton, a former lawyer with offices in Ohio and Michigan, was kicked out of the courtroom over repeated disruptions to the proceedings. “I’m God. And the Anti-Christ. Hail Satan. And I am a f*gg*t. Gun. Gun. Hail Satan. Gun. USA,” he said at one point, the Blade reported. 
While Exton claimed he pointed the weapon at Valone to pressure her over the sale of their former home, prosecutors argued that there was no doubt about Exton’s intent. 
“He was not there for a relationship-building effort,” prosecutor Rose Mock said during the trial. “When you fire a deadly weapon, or attempt to fire a deadly weapon, in a public place, you put everyone’s lives at risk.”
Exton was convicted of two additional assault charges. Set to be sentenced on September 21, he could end up behind bars for up to 25 years. 
At the time of the incident, the restaurant praised the response of its employees and customers. 
“We are deeply grateful for the swift and courageous actions taken by our team, our patrons, and the Toledo Police Department in response to an isolated domestic incident which occurred at one of our establishments on Friday evening,” the restaurant <a href="https://www.13abc.com/2025/04/14/new-video-attempted-murder-inside-toledo-restaurant-thwarted-by-patrons-who-took-down-gunman-tpd-says/">said</a>. “Thanks to their quick intervention, the situation was resolved.”

A 19-year-old Brooklyn man accused of attempted murder was released on $5,000 bail last month despite prosecutors asking that he be held in confinement. Now, police say he has been arrested again after shooting another man near New York City’s West Indian Day Parade.
Nayshawn Wilkinson was arrested Tuesday and is facing a new attempted murder charge stemming from a Monday afternoon shooting near Nostrand Avenue and St. Johns Place in Brooklyn, along the route of the annual parade. Police say a 24-year-old man was shot in the buttocks. The victim was hospitalized and is expected to survive. Wilkinson was taken into custody, and a firearm was recovered, according to authorities.
The arrest came less than five weeks after Wilkinson was released in an earlier attempted murder case. Wilkinson was arrested in July after firing a gun twice at a 15-year-old boy near the Callahan-Kelly Playground in Brownsville, according to the criminal complaint cited by the <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/09/08/us-news/accused-west-indian-day-parade-shooter-was-out-on-bail-for-attempted-murder/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=nypost">New York Post</a>. The teenager was struck in the foot and required surgery, while prosecutors said a .22-caliber bullet fragment was recovered from the wound. Wilkinson was charged with attempted murder, assault, and weapons offenses.
Prosecutors asked Brooklyn Criminal Court Judge Janice Robinson to remand Wilkinson without bail. Instead, Robinson set bail at $5,000 cash or a $10,000 bond on August 4. Wilkinson posted the bail and was released.
On Tuesday, Wilkinson was scheduled to appear in court for proceedings in that earlier case, but was already in police custody over the new shooting.
The case has renewed scrutiny of Judge Robinson, who moved from Brooklyn’s civil court to the criminal bench and has faced criticism over a series of low- or no-bail decisions. A <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/08/23/us-news/bail-hating-nyc-judge-janice-robinson-has-knack-for-cutting-criminals-loose-post-review/">review by the Post </a>of 13 defendants who recently appeared before Robinson found that eight were released without bail, including two defendants facing attempted murder charges. In the five remaining cases, bail was set below the amounts prosecutors had requested.
In one of those cases, prosecutors sought $150,000 bail for Adrian Benitez, who was accused of attempted murder after allegedly opening fire during a dispute. A stray bullet allegedly struck a seven-year-old service dog belonging to a woman with Down syndrome. Robinson released Benitez without bail, according to the Post.
Under New York law, bail decisions generally focus on whether conditions are necessary to ensure that a defendant returns to court. Courts historically have not been permitted to simply detain someone because they believe the person is dangerous to the community, although subsequent reforms have expanded the circumstances in which bail can be imposed and require judges to consider certain factors, including prior firearm use.
That framework has long been a subject of debate in New York. A 2025 state Senate bill seeking to allow judges to explicitly consider whether defendants pose a physical threat to victims or the public remained active, reflecting continuing disagreement over the proper role of public safety in bail determinations.
Meanwhile, Monday’s violence around the West Indian Day Parade was not contained to an isolated incident. At least three people were shot in <a href="https://abc7ny.com/post/brooklyn-double-shooting-2-people-shot-crown-heights-new-york-carnival-parade/19803489/">separate incidents</a> around the parade route, while several others were stabbed or slashed during the day’s festivities. The NYPD had deployed thousands of officers and implemented enhanced security measures, including checkpoints and restrictions on bags.

A previously deported illegal immigrant is accused of killing a young father while driving drunk in a stolen Audi the wrong way down a North Texas highway.
Alexander Nunez, 26, allegedly struck a vehicle carrying Kenan Ellis and two of his cousins shortly before midnight on September 3 on Highway 67 in Duncanville. Ellis had recently celebrated his 29th birthday.
Ellis was returning home from a music video shoot for popular rapper BigXThaPlug when the crash occurred, his uncle, Xavier Hicks, told The Daily Wire. Hicks said the rapper was driving close behind. Ellis is survived by his 7-year-old son and a 5-year-old daughter.
Federal authorities previously deported Nunez, who later illegally re-entered the United States without being encountered at the border, a Department of Homeland Security spokesman told The Daily Wire.
Nunez faces charges of intoxication assault, intoxication manslaughter, and unauthorized use of a vehicle. He is being held in the Dallas County Jail on a $110,000 bond.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) also lodged a detainer in the case, asking local authorities to transfer him to federal custody if they release him.
&#8220;Under President Trump and Secretary Mullin, if you break the law, you will face the consequences. Criminal illegal aliens are not welcome in the U.S.,&#8221; the DHS spokesperson said.
When Hicks learned of Nunez&#8217;s previous deportation, he reacted with one word: &#8220;Wow.&#8221;
&#8220;Honestly and truthfully, that&#8217;s unfortunate. But my faith keeps telling me that it was God&#8217;s timing,&#8221; Hicks said.
&#8220;I hold no malice in my heart for Alexander Nunez,&#8221; he added.
Ellis&#8217; cousins were left with multiple broken bones, while one is expected to be in a wheelchair for several months, <a href="https://www.fox4news.com/news/suspect-faces-intoxication-manslaughter-immigration-hold-after-fatal-duncanville-crash" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Fox 4. Both are expected to recover.
The three men were roughly five minutes from home when the crash occurred, according to reports.
Authorities determined that Nunez was intoxicated after he failed field sobriety tests, Fox 4 reported.
Ellis&#8217; sister, Siniya Allen, described her late brother as &#8220;a great dad,&#8221; &#8220;an amazing brother,&#8221; and &#8220;an amazing son.&#8221;
&#8220;He was there for all his friends. He was just a great person,&#8221; she told Fox 4.
Allen said Nunez&#8217;s alleged actions left her family with an overwhelming loss.
&#8220;He took something important from us. I lost a brother. My mom lost a son. I have another brother. He lost his sibling. His kids have to grow up without a dad. No kid should have to do that at the expense of somebody else&#8217;s actions,&#8221; Siniya said.

Seattle Interim Police Chief Andre Sayles raised eyebrows on Monday by using the term &#8220;trigger-pullers&#8221; instead of calling violent criminals &#8220;shooters.&#8221;
Sayles&#8217; sanitized choice of words smacks of his boss Mayor Katie Wilson’s own soft-on-crime, leftist attitudes.
&#8220;Working with business owners, increasing patrols, bike patrols, working with our community response group and our gun violence reduction unit as well, looking at ways to where we can identify individuals that are known — we call them trigger pullers in our community,&#8221; Sayles said. &#8220;Identifying them, making sure that we&#8217;re putting cases on those individuals, working with King County Prosecutor&#8217;s Office to bring these individuals to justice because the families that lost loved ones throughout this year and years past deserve justice in this manner.&#8221;
Sayles’ delicate terminology sounds like it came straight from the playbook of Wilson, the activist mayor who once advocated for completely disbanding the Seattle Police Department and building a future &#8220;entirely without SPD.&#8221;
While violent criminals run wild in the streets, Wilson&#8217;s administration seems far more focused on policing words and coddling Left-wing ideology than backing cops. Seattle has been rocked by bloodshed, including a mass shooting in July at the Bite of Seattle food festival that left two innocent bystanders dead and four wounded, including a toddler. Yet, instead of giving officers the aggressive support they need, Wilson ousted former Police Chief Shon Barnes and replaced him with Sayles.
Seattle Police Officers Guild President Kent Loux hasn&#8217;t held back, repeatedly slamming Wilson’s dangerous priorities. Earlier this year, City Hall tried to bully the union into deleting a social media post that exposed a bloody triple shooting outside a nightclub, claiming the cops leaked sensitive footage. The union stood its ground with a cease-and-desist order, and the mayor’s office was forced into an embarrassing retreat.
The mayor’s leftist crusade is draining resources directly from law enforcement. The city scrapped $50,000 signing bonuses for experienced officers, crippling the Seattle Police Department’s ability to attract veteran cops. This comes despite the department suffering a bleeding force that is down hundreds from normal levels.
While slashing police incentives to handle a projected budget deficit, Wilson happily funneled over $800,000 in taxpayer funds toward specialized LGBT and trans &#8220;community stabilization&#8221; initiatives.
Wilson ordered high-tech surveillance cameras dark near the Stadium District and refused to activate crime-fighting technology, prioritizing &#8220;privacy concerns&#8221; over catching killers, which left detectives begging the public for footage.
As Loux bluntly pointed out, Wilson believes public safety means &#8220;bus lanes&#8221; and activist payouts, while rank-and-file officers know it requires &#8220;boots on the ground.&#8221;
With officer departures increasing and surrounding cities offering actual police support, Wilson&#8217;s woke policies are turning Seattle into a criminal sanctuary.

Three men were stabbed in Brooklyn&#8217;s Crown Heights neighborhood early Monday morning, just hours before the start of the West Indian American Day Parade, <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/09/07/us-news/multiple-people-stabbed-in-crown-heights-as-notoriously-violent-west-indian-american-day-parade-kicks-off/">according</a> to the New York Post.
Police said a 32-year-old and a 23-year-old were stabbed in the neck and a 36-year-old was stabbed in the face near Carroll Street and Utica Avenue around 5:48 a.m. All three were taken to Kings County Hospital, where the 32-year-old remained in critical condition as of writing. The other two victims were listed in stable condition. No arrests had been made.
The attack occurred just blocks from J&#8217;Ouvert, the pre-dawn Caribbean festival that traditionally opens Labor Day weekend celebrations in Crown Heights before the main parade begins.
This year&#8217;s parade features tightened security following <a href="https://gothamist.com/news/nypd-ramps-up-security-for-west-indian-day-parade-as-past-shootings-remain-unsolved">last year&#8217;s violence</a>, in which six people were injured across three separate shootings near the parade route — two of which remain unsolved, <a href="https://gothamist.com/news/nypd-ramps-up-security-for-west-indian-day-parade-as-past-shootings-remain-unsolved">according</a> to police. The NYPD has reportedly mounted one of its largest deployments of the year, stationing thousands of officers along Eastern Parkway and in surrounding neighborhoods, with security checkpoints and metal detectors set up along the route. Organizers have also moved up the parade&#8217;s end time to 5:30 p.m., <a href="https://www.geo.tv/latest/681025-labour-day-parade-2026-everything-to-know-about-route-closures-start-times">citing</a> the history of violence that has plagued the event in past years.
The West Indian Day Parade, one of the largest celebrations of Caribbean culture in the United States, has been marred by deadly violence repeatedly in recent years. Democrats can&#8217;t run fast enough from the fallout surrounding a former Westchester police bigwig&#8217;s arrest in connection with a gang-related shooting.
Former Mount Vernon Deputy Police Commissioner Jennifer Lackard has been charged with attempted murder after authorities say she and her ex-con husband James Lackard drove the getaway car for her son — known Slutty Gang member Chase Lackard — when he shot at a rival gang member in the Bronx last June.
As The New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/09/07/us-news/scandal-over-ny-police-bigwig-linked-to-sons-gang-shooting-has-dems-running-for-the-hills/">reported</a>, local Democrats are not terribly interested in Lackard&#8217;s case — except in the most generic of terms — and the reason appears to be political. Westchester, after being known for decades as a Republican stronghold, has shifted dramatically leftward in recent years — and was even touted in 2022 as the &#8220;<a href="https://nypost.com/2022/11/26/in-a-political-shift-sixth-borough-westchester-trends-dem/">Sixth Borough</a>.&#8221;
The most recent election data shows that Mount Vernon has some 44,000 registered voters: 31,000 are Democrats compared to just 2,800 Republicans.
Lackard, who was hired as part of a police reform initiative in 2020, is seen as part of that shift. Democratic Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard tapped Lackard — who had no prior law enforcement experience — for the newly created position of deputy commissioner overseeing the department&#8217;s wellness initiatives.
Governor Kathy Hochul&#8217;s office, rather than address Lackard&#8217;s case specifically, gave The Post a vague statement condemning police misconduct in the most general of terms.
&#8220;Governor [Kathy] Hochul’s top priority is public safety,&#8221; a spokesperson for the governor said. &#8220;Those entrusted with keeping New Yorkers safe must be held to the highest ethical and professional standards, and anyone whose actions jeopardize the critical mission of law enforcement must be investigated and held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.&#8221;
While State Sen. Jamaal Bailey did condemn Lackard&#8217;s actions in more specific terms, he gave the city some wiggle room by saying that they never could have predicted her behavior when they hired her for the six-figure job.
&#8220;While these allegations are unacceptable and incredibly serious, it’s important to note that it’s not possible to predict the future behavior of any employee,&#8221; Bailey said. &#8220;The purported conduct did not occur during the course of or related to her duties and should have no bearing on how the department is viewed.&#8221;
Lackard is accused of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/police-official-accused-of-helping-son-carry-out-gang-hit">driving the car</a> at least part of the time when she and her husband first delivered their gang-affiliated son to a court appearance and then drove him around the area near the courthouse so that he could open fire from the vehicle on a rival gang member. He did not hit his intended target, but drove away with his parents. All three were eventually arrested in connection with the attempted hit.
Republican National Committee spokeswoman Natalie Baldassarre told The Post that there was no excuse for the Democrats refusing to address the case head-on: &#8220;Democrats are the first to preach ‘no one is above the law’ until it screws them politically. This thug-hugging mom had no business being a police commissioner and any official who covered for her should be held to account.&#8221;
White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis added, “Yet again, extreme liberal Democrats are protecting criminals over law abiding American citizens.&#8221;

Police were forced to confront and kill a knife-wielding maniac in New York City on Friday, just days after a different maniac went on a stabbing rampage, killing one person and wounding another in Times Square.
The man was first seen walking on the Brooklyn Bridge cables around 3:30 a.m., and responding officers scaled the bridge to try to convince him to come down to safety, according to NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit (ESU) Assistant Chief Gerard Dowling. This led to a standoff during which the man lunged at them and made threatening statements, The New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/09/04/us-news/nyc-cops-shoot-knife-wielding-man-who-charged-at-them-on-brooklyn-bridge/">reported</a>.
“He stated, ‘I want to die, I want you to kill me, I have a bomb, you’re not going to make me do something bad to the cops,’” Dowling told reporters.
Officers urged the man to drop his weapon and come down, attempting to reason with him for nearly one hour. Eventually, the knife-wielding man began to descend the cables and lunged at one of the officers when he was within three feet of him.
“At that point, a member of ESU who was on the roadbed of the bridge discharged his weapon one time, striking the man,” Dowling said.
The man was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. All Brooklyn-bound lanes of the bridge were then shut down for peak hours of the Friday morning commute. 
This incident was preceded by <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/top-bank-executive-killed-in-times-square-stabbing-spree">another knife attack</a> in New York City on Monday. Erin Piacenti, a young wife and new mother who had just returned from maternity leave to her VP position at Bank of America, was stabbed and killed by a mentally disturbed woman. Another unidentified man was also injured and taken to the hospital. He was released from the hospital on Tuesday.
Police fatally shot the attacker, 49-year-old Pamela Cisneros, who was armed with two kitchen knives.
Cisneros, from Queens, had previous outbursts related to her mental state, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. She refused repeated commands to drop the knives when officers confronted her near an NYPD substation.
“During the encounter, she told the officers, ‘I’m not dropping anything. I would rather kill both of you.’ She repeated, ‘I will kill you,’” Tisch said during a press briefing.
Several weeks before that, there was another stabbing near Times Square in which a man was stabbed in the head during an argument inside a subway station.
