At least 13 people were killed and 17 wounded in an explosives attack in western Colombia on Saturday, a police source told Reuters, in violence authorities have blamed on dissidents of the FARC guerrilla group.
The attack took place on the Pan-American Highway in the El Tunel area of Cajibio municipality, about 35 km (22 miles) from Popayan, the capital of Cauca province, according to authorities.
Cauca Governor Octavio Guzman said on X the attack was one of several criminal actions reported in the province on Saturday.
&#8220;Cauca cannot continue to face this barbarity alone. We are facing a terrorist escalation that demands immediate responses. We demand forceful, sustained and effective action from the national government in the face of the grave public order crisis we are experiencing,&#8221; he added.
Presidential candidate Paloma Valencia, a member of the opposition right-wing Democratic Center party who is from Cauca, called the attack &#8220;terrorism&#8221; carried out by the dissident FARC faction, which rejected a 2016 peace deal.
&#8220;President Gustavo Petro&#8217;s government cannot continue minimizing the violence or dismantling the state,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We demand immediate action, full backing for our Armed Forces and police, and concrete results.&#8221;
Petro, a former rebel himself whose term as president is nearing an end, has pursued a &#8220;total peace&#8221; policy with guerrillas through negotiations and intermittent ceasefires.

The illegal immigrant who purse snatched then-Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem received a three-year prison sentence this week.
Chilean national Mario Bustamante Leiva, 50, stole Noem&#8217;s Gucci bag, which had $3,000 cash, her passport, wallet, and government ID inside last April while she was having Easter dinner with family at the Capital Burger in Northwest Washington, D.C., authorities said.
After he serves his time, Bustamante Leiva will be subject to deportation, <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/pr/purse-thief-who-targeted-kristi-noem-sentenced-36-months-wire-fraud-and-first-degree" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the Department of Justice.
It was his fourth theft in eight days, the Justice Department said. Before that, he was arrested in Utah in 2021 for shoplifting and in London in 2015 for a months-long theft spree, according to the New York Post.
He was also let go by authorities in New York City last March after allegedly stealing a fanny pack from a food cart. The victim of that crime, who was a legal immigrant, previously <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/04/28/us-news/illegal-migrant-accused-in-kristi-noems-purse-snatching-had-ny-arrest-warrant-out/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the New York Post that the suspect racked up $1,200 in credit card charges in just 20 minutes.
“That’s insane. I don’t know how he was let out after that without any reason,” the man said at the time.
“I mean, putting in so much effort and then coming to the States and experiencing something like that intrigued my frightened side,&#8221; he added.

Bustamante Leiva pleaded guilty Nov. 21, 2025, to three counts of wire fraud and one count of first-degree theft for his role in Noem&#8217;s purse-snatching.

“Bustamante Leiva came to Washington illegally to prey on citizens of the District. He methodically targeted women at restaurants, stealing their purses, and monetizing the stolen cards within minutes,” U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said in a statement Wednesday.
“His pattern of theft ends here. He will serve his prison term and be deported,&#8221; she said.
After the theft, Bustamante Leiva went to a nearby restaurant, where surveillance cameras captured him holding Noem&#8217;s purse, wallet, and at least four of her credit cards, which he used to make a purchase, according to the Justice Department.
Police arrested the illegal immigrant on April 26, 2025, at a D.C. motel, where they found Noem&#8217;s purse and wallet, along with a gift card he had purchased with a stolen card and more than $3,000 in cash.
Bustamante Leiva entered the United States at the Orlando International Airport in August 2021. At the time, he was granted a visa waiver that allowed him to stay in the country until Nov. 13, 2021.
The Chilean national never left and overstayed his permission to remain in the country, making him an illegal immigrant.
Bustamante Leiva&#8217;s co-defendant Cristian Rodrigo Montecino-Sanzana was sentenced on March 13, 2026, to 13 months behind bars and three years of supervised release for his role in one of Bustamante Leiva&#8217;s thefts. He is also expected to face deportation after serving his sentence.

Two teenagers, including an 18-year-old girl, were arrested earlier this week and charged with plotting a major attack on one of the largest Jewish synagogues in Houston.
Authorities arrested 18-year-old Angelina Han Hicks of Lexington, North Carolina, on Wednesday and accused her of planning to &#8220;kill as many Jews as possible&#8221; in an attack on Congregation Beth Israel in Houston, the Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/north-carolina-texas-synagogue-attack-plot-387b32d268fb0cd71c9415c418856a96">reported</a>. Hicks is accused of plotting the attack alongside two &#8220;male subjects.&#8221; The conspirators planned to murder Jewish worshipers by driving a vehicle through the synagogue on April 21, 2028, according to court documents.
It appears that one of the other alleged co-conspirators was also arrested earlier this week. The Houston Police Department announced on Thursday that a 16-year-old was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit capital murder in relation to &#8220;a threat directed towards certain Jewish institutions in our area.&#8221;
The Houston Police did not say the 16-year-old was arrested for a planned attack on Congregation Beth Israel specifically, but authorities in Texas&#8217; largest city said they learned about the threat on the same day Hicks was taken into custody in North Carolina. Court documents identified Hicks&#8217; alleged co-conspirators as &#8220;Teegan&#8221; and &#8220;Angel,&#8221; the Houston Chronicle <a href="https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/religion/article/houston-beth-israel-arrest-22221195.php">reported</a>.
Congregation Beth Israel, which also runs a school for pre-K through 5th graders, closed on Wednesday &#8220;out of an abundance of caution&#8221; after Houston police alerted the synagogue&#8217;s leadership to the threat. The synagogue reopened on Thursday.
The FBI <a href="https://x.com/FBICharlotte/status/2047385012278829223">said</a> that its Charlotte Joint Terrorism Task Force began investigating the alleged plot on Tuesday evening &#8220;after a tip to a North Carolina law enforcement agency.&#8221;
&#8220;This is an exceptional example of when you see something concerning, you say something to law enforcement,&#8221; the FBI added.
Hicks faces two felony charges of conspiracy to commit murder and felony conspiracy to commit assault with a deadly weapon. Her bond was set to $10 million, with District Court Judge Carlton Terry saying on Wednesday that Hicks&#8217; detention is necessary to prevent her from getting &#8220;a chance to communicate with either of those [co-conspirators] or those who could relay a message puts lives at risk.&#8221; Hicks&#8217; lawyer said his client&#8217;s young age could be a major factor in her legal defense.
North Carolina prosecutors warned that while the alleged plot highlighted a date two years from now, there was &#8220;some concern that there could be an imminent event&#8221; targeting Congregation Beth Israel.
The arrests come as Jewish Americans face increased threats and just a month after a Muslim man in Michigan rammed his vehicle into the largest Jewish Reform synagogue in the United States in an attack that the Justice Department said was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/michigan-synagogue-terrorist-attack-was-directed-by-hezbollah-fbi-says">directed by Hezbollah</a>. Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old Lebanese national, was killed after exchanging gunfire with security guards at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan. One of the security guards was injured after he was struck by Ghazali’s vehicle, but no one else was harmed in the attack, which occurred near a daycare with dozens of children inside.

Famed writer Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who was infamously targeted with murderous threats from Islamic terrorists, <a href="https://www.thefp.com/p/ayaan-hirsi-ali-the-splc-targeted">welcomed</a> the federal indictment against the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), arguing it validates long-standing criticisms of the organization’s practices and influence.
Earlier this week, a federal grand jury in Montgomery, Alabama, charged the SPLC with multiple counts, including wire fraud, bank fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Prosecutors allege that between 2014 and 2023, the group diverted more than $3 million in donor funds to individuals linked to extremist organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazi groups, while publicly condemning those same organizations. The SPLC has denied wrongdoing and says it will contest the charges.
In an opinion piece titled, &#8220;The SPLC Targeted Me. Now Its Reckoning Has Come,&#8221; Hirsi Ali wrote that the indictment did not surprise her, but rather raised questions about why it took so long. She pointed to her own experience with the SPLC, which in 2016 included her in a publication labeling certain figures as “anti-Muslim extremists.” Hirsi Ali said the SPLC’s 2016 blacklist was especially dangerous because it came at a time when Islamist violence was already killing writers, cartoonists, and dissidents across Europe.
She noted she had spent more than two decades under armed protection after extremist threats against her intensified following the 2004 murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh, whose killer left a note naming her as the next target. That history, she argued, made the SPLC’s decision to classify her as an “anti-Muslim extremist” not just defamatory, but potentially dangerous.
Hirsi Ali argued that the list unfairly grouped together critics of Islamist ideology and exposed them to potential danger at a time of heightened terrorist threats in Europe and elsewhere. She also referenced a 2018 lawsuit by Maajid Nawaz, another figure named in the report, which resulted in a multimillion-dollar settlement and a public apology from the SPLC. Hirsi Ali noted she did not receive a similar apology.

Hirsi Ali highlighted broader concerns about the organization’s finances and fundraising. She cited past reporting and watchdog criticism alleging that the SPLC accumulated large reserves, including funds held offshore, while continuing aggressive fundraising campaigns. According to her account, major spikes in donations followed high-profile events such as the 2017 Charlottesville rally and the 2020 protests after George Floyd’s death.
Hirsi Ali further questioned the integrity of the SPLC’s widely cited “Hate Map,” arguing it expanded over time to include mainstream conservative and religious groups. She referenced a 2012 shooting at the Family Research Council, where the attacker reportedly used the SPLC’s map to identify the target, as an example of potential real-world consequences.
In interpreting the current allegations, Hirsi Ali framed the SPLC’s trajectory as part of a broader pattern in which institutions drift from their original missions. She argued the group evolved from a civil rights organization focused on combating violent white supremacist groups into one that targets ideological opponents while maintaining its public authority.
The indictment also includes claims about an SPLC informant allegedly involved in organizing the 2017 Charlottesville rally while being paid by the organization, an allegation Hirsi Ali said underscores the seriousness of the case if proven. SPLC interim CEO Bryan Fair has called the charges politically motivated and said the organization will defend itself in court. 
Hirsi Ali acknowledged that an indictment is not a conviction, but argued the case represents a significant moment of accountability. She concluded that donors, journalists, and the public should apply greater scrutiny to influential advocacy organizations, especially those that position themselves as arbiters of extremism and hate.

The Southern Poverty Law Center could be headed for financial ruin if convicted on charges that it provided millions in donations to members of extremist groups like the Ku Klux Klan, the Justice Department told The Daily Wire on Wednesday.
It remains unclear if any individuals will be indicted as part of the years-long investigation. The DOJ maintains the investigation into the SPLC is ongoing after the federal grand jury indictment in the Middle District of Alabama on Tuesday. Specifically, the indictment argues that “donors were not told that some of the donated funds were to be used by the SPLC to pay high-level leaders of violent extremist groups and others.”
Beyond just legal consequences, Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel Jeremy Tedesco explained that corporations that work with SPLC might also cut ties with the organization.
“It&#8217;s all propaganda designed to harm their enemies for political reasons. But with this indictment, I would think, we&#8217;ll probably see another wave of companies. Maybe the final ones that rely on them say, ‘It&#8217;s probably enough,’” he said.
Salesforce notably stopped using SPLC’s “metrics,” which could have potentially driven business strategies. <a href="https://www.heritage.org/press/salesforce-ends-reliance-splc-after-heritage-shareholder-proposal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Heritage Foundation</a> celebrated the decision at the time.
The left-wing group has always claimed to target legitimate hate groups, but has been facing pushback for its blanket labeling of conservative organizations as hateful— and per the Justice Department’s indictment, is facing multiple charges for wire fraud, giving false information to a bank, and “conspiracy to commit concealment money laundering.”
Tedesco explained that the trial will need to determine whether or not the SPLC was “actually funding the activities and the leaders and members of these organizations, essentially to subsidize what they were doing so they could go back to their donors and ask them for money.”
The indictment explains that the group’s “paid informants (‘field sources’) engaged in the active promotion of racist groups at the same time that the SPLC was denouncing the same groups on its website” and misled their donors in the process.
The grand jury charged that the SPLC “opened bank accounts connected to a series of fictitious entities” and lied about the accounts to “keep the scheme going.”
“The SPLC also had a field source who was a member of the online leadership chat group that planned the 2017 ‘Unite the Right’ event in Charlottesville, Virginia,” the indictment stated. “That field source made racist postings under the supervision of the SPLC and helped coordinate transportation to the event for several attendees.”
The SPLC did not respond to The Daily Wire’s request for comment.
“Although we don’t know all the details, the focus appears to be on the SPLC’s prior use of paid confidential informants to gather credible intelligence on extremely violent groups,” SPLC interim president and CEO Bryan Fair said on Tuesday prior to the indictment announcement, according to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/southern-poverty-law-center-says-doj-investigation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a>.

An illegal immigrant is accused of sexually abusing his minor daughter over several years before she gave birth earlier this month in a South Carolina hospital parking lot, The Daily Wire has learned.
Mexican national Luis Armando Argueta Montejo, 43, was arrested and charged with three counts of second-degree criminal sexual misconduct with a minor and one count of incest after the girl gave birth on April 11 in Oconee County, <a href="https://www.wyff4.com/article/man-charged-child-sex-crimes-incest/71054399" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to WYFF.
Investigators say Montejo engaged in sexual intercourse with the victim, who is believed to be between 11 and 14 years old, between 2022 and 2025, WSAZ <a href="https://www.wsaz.com/2026/04/19/man-charged-with-incest-after-minor-gives-birth-parking-lot-deputies-say/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
Arrest warrants identify Montejo as the biological father of the juvenile victim, according to WYFF.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged a detainer on April 17 and expects that local authorities will comply and hand him over to federal immigration agents, the Department of Homeland Security told The Daily Wire. Montejo told ICE he first entered the United States in 2006, the agency said.
“This sicko should NEVER have been in our country to prey on children in the first place,” Acting Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Lauren Bis told The Daily Wire. “He now faces charges for incest and multiple child sex crimes.&#8221;
&#8220;Under Secretary [Markwayne] Mullin, ICE lodged an arrest detainer with South Carolina to ensure this monster is never loose in our communities again. Thankfully, South Carolina cooperates with ICE law enforcement. This is why we need cooperation from state and local partners, so together we can keep criminals off our streets and make America safe again,&#8221; Bis said.
Deputies were alerted after the girl gave birth, <a href="https://people.com/man-charged-incest-after-minor-gave-birth-parking-lot-11954108" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to People Magazine. The case was then turned over to the Violent Crimes Unit of the Criminal Investigations Bureau, resulting in Montejo&#8217;s arrest on April 16.
Investigators have yet to determine the identity of the father of the young girl&#8217;s baby, according to FOX Carolina. The victim and her baby were subsequently placed into protective custody.
Rep. Sheri Biggs (R-SC) called Montejo&#8217;s alleged crimes &#8220;the worst of the worst&#8221; and &#8220;truly sickening and evil.&#8221;
&#8220;I thank ICE for their quick action, and I pray nothing like this ever happens again,&#8221; she said.
Montejo is being held on an $80,000 surety bond, according to multiple reports. The illegal immigrant has no previous criminal history in the United States, according to DHS.

The outlet claimed that 31-year-old U.S. Army veteran Shamar Elkins, the man accused of killing eight children, including seven of his own, was the victim of a society that believes women belong to men.
“It is tempting to treat Elkins’s actions as the isolated incident of a madman. But poor mental health is never a reasonable explanation for attempting to execute one’s wife and children,” <a href="https://www.thecut.com/article/shreveport-killing-shamar-elkins-mental-health-patriarchy.html">wrote</a> Brittney Cooper, a Cut contributor who “writes about race and systems of power.”
“Patriarchy offers a better explanation for this violence,” she went on. “Patriarchy teaches men that women and children belong to them, that they are property that men get to have, as a male rite of passage. Men are taught, in what bell hooks famously called a ‘white supremacist capitalist patriarchy,’ to measure their worth and value by the size of their bank account, the size of their genitals, and the size of their families. These are forms of toxic self-value, predicated as they are on women and children having no agency or dreams of their own.”
Cooper went on to lament “the rise of the manosphere” and “a nation being led by a group of right-wing extremists with Neanderthal ideas about gender and sexuality.”
“Men who kill their wives and children are not just bad apples who needed a free month of BetterHelp. These killings are the natural outcome of a country enamored with patriarchy and determined to make sure that men can freely dominate women,” she insists.
Readers on social media pushed back strongly on this theory.
“Well you couldn&#8217;t make it about racism, so I guess Patriarchy seemed like a good idea. Though I bet if you tried you could make it about racism and how mostly female mental health professionals won&#8217;t take on poor Black male clients. Of course then, no patriarchy. Tough,” one sarcastic commenter <a href="https://x.com/thevanosam/status/2046572431159038339">wrote</a>.
“The race is inconvenient, so we switch to a gender motive. He was a criminal, a gun criminal no less. But instead of being locked up, the people that screech constantly about gun violence, went easy on him as they always do. It’s a story about leftist policies causing more death,” another person <a href="https://x.com/occhipig/status/2046549453838897514">added</a>.
Elkins, who appeared to be targeting his own “descendants,” opened fire in three different homes across Shreveport on April 19. He was shot and killed by police after he attempted to carjack a vehicle to escape.
Shreveport officials described the shooting as domestic violence, saying Elkins shot the mother of his children and another woman, as well as his seven children and one of their cousins, per <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2026/04/21/shamar-elkins-shreveport-louisiana-shooter/89710200007/">USA Today</a>. 
The outlet noted that Elkins married Shaneiqua Pugh in April 2024. A woman named Christina Snow sued Elkins for child support and was granted joint custody of their child, Sariahh, in 2017. Sariahh was one of the victims of the shooting.

San Francisco drastically reduced issues they were having on public transit by making it almost impossible to enter without paying, according to a <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/04/fare-gate-society-bart/686868/">report</a> from The Atlantic.
The outlet noted that last August, BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) installed six-foot-tall saloon-style doors made of plexiglass with metal frames that were much harder to get through compared to regular turnstiles that could easily be jumped. This change is expected to increase revenue by $10 million per year as riders are forced to actually pay to ride. 
But beyond generating more income, it’s also led to a decrease in issues that used to plague the subway. Overall crime on BART plunged 41% in 2025 compared to the previous year, with violent crime down 31% and property crime down 43%.
“Safety is about more than enforcement. It’s about presence, partnership, and creating an environment where all riders feel comfortable using BART,” said BART Police Chief Kevin Franklin of the massive change. 
“BART PD is committed to deterring criminal activity, responding quickly when help is needed, and ensuring riders feel safe throughout their journeys. These numbers demonstrate the impact of officers who are engaged and focused on building trust with the communities BART serves.”
BART PD also doubled the number of officers in the system and made sure that they were frequently riding the trains. 
This wasn’t the first time BART tried to curtail fare jumpers, but it was a different world in 2019 when they introduced “inverted guillotine” gates, which at the time were <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20260222141612mp_/https://www.kqed.org/arts/13861966/barts-fare-evasion-crackdown-exposes-the-deadly-elegance-of-hostile-design" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dubbed</a> “anti-poor, anti-homeless, and ableist” by activists.
There was also a push against &#8220;fare checks&#8221; — essentially people dispatched to verify tickets — which were dubbed ineffective by critics, said to &#8220;disproportionately affect people of color and the homeless,&#8221; and found to recover only &#8220;minimal revenue.&#8221;
These new jump-proof gates make fare checks unnecessary, and complaints of racist enforcement policies are a non-issue since those people haven’t gained access in the first place. 
“We had pressure on us that interaction between police and the public, because of fare evasion, could lead to racial profiling,” BART communications officer Alicia Trost told The Atlantic. “Once the fare gates were in place, we’re limiting those interactions. It’s not discretionary; there’s less enforcement.”
These efforts stand in sharp contrast to efforts being made by New York’s new Muslim socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, whose stated goal is to make city buses <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/its-only-been-a-month-and-zohran-mamdani-is-already-a-disaster">free for everyone</a>.

U.S. authorities arrested a Chinese national at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City earlier this month who is accused of traveling to Nebraska and taking pictures of military aircraft near Offutt Air Force Base.
Tianrui Liang also allegedly planned to travel to Oklahoma to photograph more military aircraft at Tinker Air Force Base, Fox News <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/chinese-national-arrested-jfk-after-allegedly-photographing-us-military-aircraft-nebraska-base?lid=zeskeho3ui7f">reported</a>. The 21-year-old Chinese national is charged with violating U.S. law prohibiting people from photographing or sketching defense installations, according to court documents.
Authorities were first alerted to suspicious activity near Offutt Air Force Base after a person witnessed &#8220;a male holding a camera with a telescopic lens&#8221; near the military installation, according to an FBI affidavit.
Offutt Air Force Base is one of the most sensitive military installations in the United States and is the home of U.S. Strategic Command, which is <a href="https://www.stratcom.mil/About/#:~:text=Air%20Force%20Global%20Strike%20Command,United%20States%20and%20Combatant%20Commanders.">responsible</a> for nuclear defense and global strike operations. The base also hosts some of the U.S. military&#8217;s most powerful reconnaissance aircraft, including the E-4B &#8220;Nightwatch,&#8221; or &#8220;doomsday plane,&#8221; which is designed for military leaders or the president to use in the case of a nuclear war.
Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City is home to the Air Force Sustainment Center, which focuses on maintaining the Air Force&#8217;s &#8220;Weapons System Readiness.&#8221;
Liang was charged in Nebraska on April 3 and was arrested at JFK International Airport four days later. Liang was taken into custody just before he boarded a plane for Frankfurt, Germany, after which he planned to fly to Glasgow, Scotland, according to court documents. The Chinese national was in the United States on a non-immigrant B1/B2 visa, which authorizes temporary travel to America for foreign tourists or people on business trips or visiting family.
Liang told authorities at the airport that he had been previously questioned by law enforcement over the allegations, according to court documents.
Multiple Chinese nationals have been arrested in recent years for taking pictures near U.S. military bases. In August 2023, five Chinese nationals who were former students at the University of Michigan were <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/5-chinese-nationals-accused-of-photographing-michigan-military-facility">caught</a> taking pictures of military equipment during joint training exercises between the National Guard and the Taiwanese military at Camp Grayling in northern Michigan, according to authorities.
Last December, a Chinese national was arrested for taking videos of B-2 Spirit stealth bombers at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri. He also took numerous photos of military equipment and the base&#8217;s perimeter fencing, <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-wdmo/pr/chinese-national-charged-unlawfully-photographing-air-force-base-and-vital-military">according</a> to the Justice Department.

The brave high school principal who tackled a would-be school shooter was crowned prom king by his grateful students over the weekend.
Principal Kirk Moore is the man in charge at Pauls Valley High School in Oklahoma. Video footage of Moore being honored on Friday night has been getting rave reviews on social media. This was after the principal was captured on surveillance footage charging at a man with a gun on the high school campus April 7. Moore was shot in the leg as he disarmed the attacker, who was then arrested.
No students were harmed.
“Ladies and gentlemen, our king,” an announcer can be heard saying at the Pauls Valley high school prom as students began cheering and giving him high fives. The DJ played the Nickelback song “Hero,” which was featured in the live action version of “Spider-Man” (2002).
The song’s chorus, “And they say that a hero can save us / I’m not going to stand here and wait,” played as Moore’s crown was placed on his head.

On April 7, former Pauls Valley High School student Victor Hawkins, 20, pointed a gun at a student in the entryway and pulled the trigger, but his firearm malfunctioned and he ducked behind a nearby vending machine in order to clear it. When he stepped out again, he fired at another student and missed.
Upon hearing the commotion and the gunfire, Principal Moore came out of his office as Hawkins fired again. Moore confronted the shooter directly and wrestled the firearm away, which is when he was shot in the leg. He and his assistant principal restrained Hawkins by lying on top of him, keeping him that way until law enforcement arrived.
Hawkins later stated that he had intended to kill Principal Moore specifically, and that he’d “wanted to conduct his own school shooting like the Columbine shooters did.”
“It doesn’t surprise me the actions that he took, but it is amazing, the actions that he took,” Don May, Pauls Valley’s police department chief, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/oklahoma-high-school-principal-saved-kids-lives-tackling-gunman-shot-rcna331866">told</a> NBC News. “There’s not a doubt in my mind that he saved kids’ lives.”
Moore told NBC in a statement that he appreciated the “outpouring of love and support” he received following the event.
“Like so many educators around the country, we prepare for these events through training and careful assessment of the threats,” Moore told the outlet. “I am grateful that my instincts and training, as well as God’s hand, were available to me.”

House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-KY) said Sunday that “something sinister” might be happening as officials probe a rash of disappearances and deaths of former top scientists who reportedly worked with classified information.
Comer said he would bring in leaders of the agencies where the scientists worked for questioning about the matter. His comments come after the White House said last week it would be probing the strange cases and President Donald Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/top-scientists-are-turning-up-dead-or-missing-now-the-white-house-is-stepping-in">said</a> he hoped the disappearances were &#8220;random.&#8221;
&#8220;We&#8217;ve put a notice out to the Department of War, to the FBI, to NASA, to the Department of Energy, that we want to know everything that they know about what happened with these scientists because those four agencies were predominantly the agencies that those 11 individuals were affiliated with. And we want to try to piece this together,” Comer <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/comer-warns-something-sinister-may-behind-deaths-disappearances-11-nuclear-space-linked-scientists">told</a> Fox News on Sunday.
&#8220;We know there are many countries around the world that would love to have our knowledge and nuclear capabilities. And these are the people that were at the forefront of it, and they&#8217;re either dead or missing,” he added.
A few of the strange cases include the disappearance of NASA scientist Monica Jacinto Reza, who <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/03/21/us-news/rocket-scientist-with-professional-ties-to-missing-gen-william-mccasland-disappeared-under-similar-circumstances/">went missing</a> during a hike in June 2025; astrophysicist Carl Grillmair, who <a href="https://abc7.com/post/man-charged-killing-caltech-astrophysicist-carl-grillmair-llano-carjacking-own-relative-burglarizing-home/18626990/">was shot</a> on his front porch in February; Massachusetts Institute of Technology physicist Nuno Loureiro, who <a href="https://news.mit.edu/2025/nuno-loureiro-professor-director-plasma-science-and-fusion-center-dies-1216">was shot</a> and killed in his home in December 2025; and Air Force Maj. Gen. William McCasland, who <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/missing-general-scientist-deaths-tied-secret-us-work-prompt-white-house-probe">went missing</a> from his Albuquerque, New Mexico, home in March.
The investigation into the deaths and disappearances is being led by the FBI.
“These missing and killed scientists and former professional members of the Department of Energy vary [widely], and we&#8217;re working most importantly with our state and local partners who have the jurisdiction on each of these cases, whether they be a homicide or a missing person&#8217;s case, they have the evidence. What we&#8217;re going to do is collectively pull it all into one place,&#8221; FBI Director Kash Patel told Fox News on Sunday.
Patel said that the investigation was focusing on whether there were any connections to classified information or foreign actors.
Other examples of strange circumstances involving the scientists include the disappearance of Kansas City National Security Campus government contractor Steven Garcia in Albuquerque in 2025, allegedly with a handgun, and the discovery of pharmaceutical scientist Jason Thomas at the bottom of a Massachusetts pond after he went missing three months ago.

Rapper d4vd, whose legal name is David Burke, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of murder after a 14-year-old girl whose dismembered body was found in his Tesla last year.
The Los Angeles Police Department said Burke, 21, has been booked on suspicion of murdering Celeste Rivas Hernandez and is being held without bail.
&#8220;Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department, Robbery-Homicide Division, have arrested David Burke, a 21-year-old resident of Los Angeles, for the murder of Celeste Rivas,&#8221; LAPD <a href="https://x.com/LAPDPIO/status/2044934044467769705?s=20">posted</a> on X, adding that the case will be presented to the L.A. County District Attorney&#8217;s office on Monday for possible charges.
Burke&#8217;s attorneys denied the allegations, saying in a statement that &#8220;actual evidence in this case will show that David Burke did not murder Celeste Rivas Hernandez and he was not the cause of her death,&#8221; per <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/d4vd-arrested-suspicion-murder-celeste-rivas-lapd/">CBS News</a>.
&#8220;There has been no indictment returned by any grand jury in this case and no criminal complaint filed,&#8221; the statement continued. &#8220;David has only been detained under suspicion. We will vigorously defend David&#8217;s innocence.&#8221;
The 21-year-old singer initially continued touring after the remains were discovered in September 2025. He canceled the remainder of his tour after the victim was publicly identified.  
Rivas’ dismembered body was found in bags inside the abandoned Tesla that had been taken to the city impound. The car was searched after employees reported a foul stench coming from the vehicle.
The Riverside County Sheriff&#8217;s Department confirmed that Rivas was reported missing from Lake Elsinore more than a year ago, per CBS News. According to a missing person flyer, the teen was last seen on April 5, 2024, leaving her home.
Burke first gained recognition on TikTok before being signed to Darkroom and Interscope Records. The “Romantic Homicide” singer has 2 million followers on Instagram and 5.4 billion streams on Spotify.
