Two Florida teenagers accused of plotting a grisly “blood ritual” killing at their high school will remain jailed without bond after prosecutors revealed disturbing details about the alleged plan, including an obsession with the perpetrator of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
Authorities say the suspects, 15-year-old Isabelle Aurelia Valdez and 14-year-old Lois Olivios Lippert, <a href="https://www.wftv.com/news/local/police-id-lake-brantley-students-accused-plotting-kill-classmate/SWJFTRVPFJCO7LSOMIUTN6NKWY/">were arrested in January</a> after a tip reported that a student known as “Jimmy” planned to kill a classmate at Lake Brantley High School in Altamonte Springs, Florida. Investigators later determined “Jimmy” was an alias used by Valdez, according to police reports.
<a href="https://www.wftv.com/news/local/sandy-hook-obsession-led-seminole-county-high-school-murder-plot-report-says/ULOFHQQLJNFKRLDVKHSGP2OXYA/">Prosecutors say</a> Valdez believed murdering a classmate who reminded her of Adam Lanza, the gunman responsible for the 2012 massacre in Sandy Hook Elementary School, would create a supernatural “blood bond” that would resurrect him from the dead.
Valdez allegedly planned to ambush the victim inside a school restroom and either stab him in the stomach or cut his throat with a knife she brought to campus. Investigators say Lippert assisted with the plan by bringing gloves and helping sharpen and test the blade in a bathroom beforehand. The pair allegedly intended to leave flowers at the scene after the killing and smoke a cigarette afterward.
The alleged plot was uncovered after a student reported what they heard through the state’s <a href="https://getfortifyfl.com/Tip.html">FortifyFL</a> tip system. Police searched Valdez’s backpack the next day and reportedly discovered a knife that she admitted she planned to use in the attack.
The teens’ communications included Discord messages in which Valdez wrote that she was planning a “blood ritual for Adam Lanza.” Investigators also say Lippert drew disturbing sketches depicting the intended victim dead and hanging from a rope.
Video shown in court during the bond hearing also captured the two teenagers laughing and joking in the back of a patrol car after their arrest. The video was later procured by <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/teens-accused-plotting-twisted-blood-ritual-school-killing-giggle-cruiser-about-glam-shot">Fox News</a>.

In the footage, Valdez joked that she had wanted to “do my makeup” before getting her mugshot, while Lippert responded that she was glad she didn’t “look too bad today.” The two also laughed about potentially becoming a “lesbian couple in jail.”
<a href="https://abcnews.com/US/florida-teens-charged-alleged-murder-plot-laughing-patrol/story?id=131000052">At one point</a>, Valdez told officers she did not feel guilty about the alleged plot. “I don’t feel guilty for my actions,” she said, adding that the only people she felt sorry for were their mothers.
Prosecutors argued the footage showed that the teens still pose a serious threat to the community. A judge agreed, ordering both defendants held without bond while the case proceeds.
Both teenagers have pleaded not guilty, and both are being charged as adults in order to allow longer-term incarceration options than would be available in the juvenile justice system.
Officials also credited the anonymous tipster whose report helped stop the alleged attack before anyone was harmed. Seminole County Public Schools said in a <a href="https://www.fox35orlando.com/news/2-lake-brantley-students-arrested-student-threat-knife-found-backpack-police-say">statement</a> following the pair&#8217;s arrest, “We are so thankful to the individual who used our anonymous reporting tools to share what they heard and prevented a possible crime. The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority, and it takes all of us working together to keep our schools and communities safe. It is critically important to remember, if you see something, please say something. We are also grateful for the incredible partnership between our schools and law enforcement, and for their quick response to this tip and the actions that followed.”
The case remains active in circuit court, and both defendants are expected to be tried together. No trial date has been set.

A man shot and killed by Dallas police during a SWAT standoff this week had previously served as a security guard for Rep. Jasmine Crockett, according to multiple law enforcement sources.
Dallas police tracked the suspect, who went by different aliases — but was going by the name Mike King — to a parking garage at Children&#8217;s Medical Center Dallas late Wednesday night, Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said during a press conference Thursday morning.

Multiple law enforcement sources have confirmed to <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/texas/news/dallas-police-killing-raises-questions-about-congresswoman-security/">CBS News</a> that the suspect had been operating under several aliases and was known publicly as Mike King. He allegedly ran a company called “Off Duty Police Services,” which connected North Texas police officers with off-duty security jobs. The Daily Wire reached out to a company of that name in the Dallas area for comment to confirm the claim, but did not receive a response.
Sources say the man was wanted for allegedly impersonating a law enforcement officer and had claimed to be one while operating the business. <a href="https://x.com/CollinRugg/status/2032621347978068016">Images</a> obtained by reporters show King standing close to Crockett at public events and on the campaign trail during her recent run for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat.
Law enforcement sources also said King oversaw teams of security officers working at several downtown Dallas hotels and events, and that he frequently drove a replica undercover police vehicle. Authorities say the vehicle allegedly used stolen license plates taken from cars outside a military recruiting office.
Federal Election Commission receipts <a href="https://www.fec.gov/data/disbursements/?data_type=processed&amp;committee_id=C00795450&amp;two_year_transaction_period=2026&amp;disbursement_description=security">reviewed</a> by The Daily Wire show that a person identified as Mike King received payments from Crockett for “security services” as recently as last year.
Crockett’s office has declined to comment on the situation. The Dallas Police Department has also said it will provide additional information as the investigation continues.
The Texas Democrat, first elected to Congress in 2023, has been a prominent left-wing voice in the House and a frequent critic of Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers.
The incident raises questions about how the suspect, who authorities say had a criminal background and was using multiple aliases, was able to operate a business placing officers in off-duty security work and secure a role providing protection for a sitting member of Congress.

Nine defendants in the anti-ICE Prairieland Detention Center riot last Independence Day in Texas were convicted in federal court on Friday.
The defendants were convicted on a range of charges including rioting, “providing material support to terrorists,” “conspiracy to use and carry an explosive,” and &#8220;using and carrying an explosive&#8221; in the North Texas Antifa Cell attack that left a local police officer shot in the neck.
In a <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndtx/pr/antifa-cell-members-convicted-prairieland-ice-detention-center-shooting" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>, FBI Dallas Special Agent in Charge R. Joseph Rothrock described the incident as a “coordinated attack” on the facility where illegal immigrants were being held before deportation from the United States.
Two individuals were also convicted of “conspiracy to conceal documents.”
According to the Department of Justice, Benjamin Song was considered the attack’s “leader,” who gave out firearms and recruited people for the effort. Song was convicted of attempted murder of federal officers for the “unlawful attempt to kill with malice aforethought the Alvarado Police Officer” and for unlawful discharging of a firearm in “the attempted murder of two correctional officers and an Alvarado Police Officer,” as he was the one who shot the officer in the neck.
Song successfully fled the scene but was arrested on July 15, 2025, while law enforcement arrested most of the other individuals involved “shortly after,” the DOJ <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndtx/pr/antifa-cell-members-convicted-prairieland-ice-detention-center-shooting">said</a>.
Song could face up to life behind bars, with a minimum of 20 years, according to a Department of Justice press release. Seven of the individuals could get 10-60 years in prison, and Daniel Rolando Sanchez Estrada could be sentenced to up to 40 years in prison.
“These guilty verdicts and convictions rightly reflect the vicious, armed attack that these Antifa cell members planned and executed against law enforcement and detention center officers on the night of July 4 last year,” U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould said in a statement.
“Their terrorist acts, attempted murder, vandalism, and explosives launched at a detention facility were a far cry from some peaceful protest or First Amendment expression. Because of the prompt action of first responders that night and tenacious work of our law enforcement partners in tandem with the prosecutors in my office, sixteen people have been brought to justice for these violent acts and their attempts to conceal them. We will continue in this mission to hold others accountable who perpetrate such violence and fund these ANTIFA groups in the Northern District of Texas.”
Notably, the attackers used &#8220;monikers&#8221; in group chats to plan the riot. The attackers also used fireworks and committed acts of vandalism, including spray-painting “F*ck You Pigs” on a building.

The man who targeted Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, on Thursday has been identified as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a Lebanese national who became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2016 under the Obama administration, the Department of Homeland Security <a href="https://x.com/BillMelugin_/status/2032250045756498058">confirmed</a> to The Daily Wire.
Ghazali ran his car into Temple Israel, the largest Reform Judaism congregation in the United States, and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/police-respond-to-reports-of-active-shooter-as-michigan-synagogue-goes-up-in-smoke">opened fire</a> with a rifle on Thursday. He was pronounced dead at the scene after the synagogue&#8217;s security engaged him with gunfire.
Ghazali was born in Lebanon in 1985 and first entered the United States in 2011 on an immigrant visa as the spouse of a U.S. citizen, the Department of Homeland Security said. After he applied for naturalization in October 2015, he was granted citizenship in February 2016. 
One security guard was injured as a result of being struck by the attacker’s vehicle, but is in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/police-respond-to-reports-of-active-shooter-as-michigan-synagogue-goes-up-in-smoke">stable condition</a>. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard confirmed that no one else was injured in the attack. Temple Israel <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/police-respond-to-reports-of-active-shooter-as-michigan-synagogue-goes-up-in-smoke">runs</a> a drive-thru food pantry on Thursdays and has a preschool that was in session. The synagogue said on Thursday that “all 140 students in our Susan and Harold Loss Early Childhood Center, our amazing staff, our courageous teachers, and our heroic security personnel are all accounted for and safe.”
The attack comes amid a heightened concern over terror attacks after President Donald Trump launched &#8220;Operation Epic Fury&#8221; in Iran. Abroad, at least 11 U.S. soldiers have been killed during the operation, with about 140 others wounded.
Trump was briefed on Wednesday on the possibility of Iranian sleeper cells being activated in the United States. The president responded, “We know where most of them are. We have our eyes on all of them — I think.&#8221; 
This week alone, two men who pledged their allegiance to ISIS attempted to throw a bomb into a crowd of protesters, and at least one person was killed in another shooting at Old Dominion University.

Jalloh, 36, discussed plans to carry out a Fort Hood-style attack with a government informant he believed was an ISIS terrorist, <a href="https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/ex-national-guard-member-from-virginia-sentenced-to-11-years-for-terrorism-after-supporting-isis/35484/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to NBC4 Washington. Jalloh was sentenced to 11 years behind bars and an additional five years of supervised release.
He was let out early in December 2024, <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/03/12/us-news/old-dominion-university-gunman-idd-as-former-national-guardsman-convicted-of-plotting-attack-to-support-islamic-state/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the New York Post.
Jalloh, who is a naturalized American citizen from Sierra Leone, stormed into a classroom on Thursday and asked if it was an ROTC course, according to the New York Post. When someone confirmed that it was, he opened fire, shooting the professor several times.
The professor, a retired military officer, died at the hospital, according to the news outlet. One of the students heroically stabbed Jalloh to death to stop him from harming others.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed on X that one person is dead and two others were wounded in the shooting.

The FBI&#8217;s Detroit Field Office shared a photo and some information about the training on January 30, 2026, as two special agents joined Temple Israel&#8217;s clergy and staff members to walk them through active shooter scenarios and drills that could help them to prepare for the unthinkable.

Just six weeks later, on March 12, a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/police-respond-to-reports-of-active-shooter-as-michigan-synagogue-goes-up-in-smoke">shooter attacked</a> the massive synagogue. Ramming the building with his vehicle first — and armed with a rifle — security personnel on site were able to quickly evaluate the situation and engage the shooter.
As The Daily Wire initially reported, a security guard at the synagogue engaged the attacker and “shots were fired,” according to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard. The shooter was found dead in the vehicle. One security guard was injured after he was hit by the attacker’s vehicle, but he’s expected to recover, according to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.
The Republican Jewish Coalition commented on the fortuitous timing of the training, saying in an X post, &#8220;@FBI led an Active Shooter Attack Prevention and Preparedness (ASAPP) training at Temple Israel less than two months [ago]. @FBIDirectorKash. No doubt this helped to prevent a mass casualty event today.&#8221;

All Jewish organizations in the Detroit area were advised to enter “lockout protocol” amid reports of an active shooter at a synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan.
&#8220;We are aware of a security incident at Temple Israel. We are advising all Jewish organizations to go into lockout protocol &#8211; nobody in or out of your building. More information to follow,” the Jewish Federation of Detroit advised in a statement.
Reports indicate that a car slammed into the temple, after which the driver exchanged fire with security before being killed. The suspect, who reportedly attempted to set off an explosive device, is dead, law enforcement confirmed to The Daily Wire. 
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard told people to shelter in place for at least a mile around the temple while law enforcement secures the scene. He said that “nobody at the moment has been confirmed to be hurt except potentially the shooter.”
“We&#8217;re looking to see if there&#8217;s more than one person, we&#8217;re still trying to figure that out, we&#8217;re trying to get access to the video at the moment,” he said, adding they were trying to confirm there were no assailants on foot.
Bouchard said that parents are looking to reunite with their kids at the local Jewish Center.
“It&#8217;s going to be secured by law enforcement, so no fear there. If you have nothing to do with the situation, don&#8217;t go there,” he said. He also said that there would be extra security in place at Jewish facilities in the area.
“All Jewish facilities in the area are going to have a lot of extra presence around it until we figure this out,” he said.
The FBI is also on the scene.
“FBI personnel are on the scene with partners in Michigan and responding to the apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation out of Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan,” FBI Director Kash Patel said.

Three people were hospitalized after a man opened fire at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, on Thursday. Authorities identified the suspected gunman as Mohammad Bailor Jalloh. FBI Director Kash Patel announced the bureau is investigating the actions as an act of terrorism. &#8220;Our Joint Terrorism Task Force is fully engaged, embedded with local authorities, and providing all resources necessary in the investigation,&#8221; said Patel. 
At 10:43 a.m., the Norfolk police began receiving calls that an active shooter was inside Constant Hall, one of the school&#8217;s academic centers. &#8220;We received information that people were being shot inside of the classrooms,&#8221; said Old Dominion Police Chief Garrett Shelton.
Shelton said the first officers arrived on the scene by 10:47 a.m. and that by 10:50 a.m., Jalloh was pronounced dead on the scene.
Shelton said there are three victims in the shooting. Shelton confirmed two victims were transported to the hospital for medical treatment and the third victim transported themselves. One of the victims has died from their injuries/
Students were evacuated from the scene and the school has canceled all classes and operations for the day.

A man accused of shoving two men, including an 83-year-old Air Force veteran, onto New York City subway tracks on Sunday is an illegal immigrant who was previously deported on four separate occasions.
Bairon Posada-Hernandez first entered the country on January 2, 2008, and was subsequently deported four different times, most recently in 2020, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed Thursday. He snuck into the country illegally a fifth time without getting caught.
The Honduran national also has a &#8220;lengthy&#8221; rap sheet of 15 prior charges, including simple assault, domestic violence, obstruction of police, possession of a weapon, drug possession, and aggravated assault, DHS said.
“Bairon Posada-Hernandez is a serial criminal and a four-time deported illegal alien from Honduras who should never have been able to walk our streets and harm innocent Americans,” Deputy Assistant Homeland Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement Thursday.
“We are praying for the victims and their families. DHS is calling upon New York sanctuary politicians to commit to this ICE detainer and not release this heinous criminal back into New York communities,&#8221; Bis added.
Posada-Hernandez allegedly shoved the elderly veteran, who has since been identified as Richard Williams, and the 30-year-old man onto the tracks in an unprovoked attack late Sunday morning, <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/03/11/us-news/migrant-accused-of-shoving-83-year-old-another-man-onto-subway-tracks-calmly-walked-away-after-crime-video/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the New York Post. The illegal immigrant then fled the scene before passersby saved the two men from getting hit by the next subway train.
Disturbing cellphone footage of the attack obtained by the New York Post showed Posada-Hernandez calmly walking away.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged a detainer on March 10, requesting that local authorities hand Posada-Hernandez over to the feds, according to DHS.
Local authorities are not expected to comply due to sanctuary laws.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, doubled down on those policies with an executive order last month.
More than 7,110 illegal immigrants were in local law enforcement custody across the state of New York in February with ICE detainers, according to DHS. The inmates account for 148 homicides, 717 assaults, 134 burglaries, 106 robberies, 235 dangerous drugs offenses, 152 weapons offenses, and 260 sexual predatory offenses.
Authorities arrested Posada-Hernandez around 5 a.m. on Tuesday at a homeless shelter in Brooklyn, according to the New York Post. He is now charged with attempted murder, attempted assault, assault, and reckless endangerment.
Williams is still clinging to life at a local hospital, the New York Post reported.
“My father, Richard, is on a respirator in the ICU in the hospital. That’s all we are going to say,” one of Williams’ daughters told the outlet Tuesday.

Charges were filed this week against the woman accused of firing multiple shots at Rihanna&#8217;s Los Angeles home on Sunday while the singer was on the property. 
Ivana Lisette Ortiz, 35, was charged with 14 counts, including attempted murder, use of a firearm, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, and shooting into an inhabited dwelling, along with sentence enhancement, <a href="https://abc7.com/post/shooting-rihannas-house-ivana-lisette-ortiz-woman-accused-opening-fire-singers-la-home-expected-court/18699807/">according to</a> ABC7. If convicted on all charges, Ortiz could face life in prison.
Ortiz’s public defender, Jamarcus Bradford, initially entered a not guilty plea on her behalf before withdrawing it to delay the arraignment until March 25. Her bail was initially set at $10 million but was later reduced to $1.875 million, the outlet noted.
Authorities allege Ortiz used an AR-style firearm and fired multiple rounds into the residence where Rihanna’s three children, her mother, and several staff members were inside. The singer and her partner, A$AP Rocky, were also on the property but in a separate building at the time of the shooting, NPR <a href="https://www.npr.org/2026/03/11/g-s1-113252/prosecutor-says-rihanna-family-were-home-when-woman-charged-with-attempted-murder-fired">reported</a>. Bullets penetrated exterior walls but did not breach interior walls.
According to LAPD, Ortiz allegedly drove to Rihanna’s residence from her home in Florida. Investigators are examining whether that travel indicates premeditation. 
&#8220;My understanding is the person drove here from Florida. In a January social media video reviewed by authorities, Ortiz allegedly said, &#8220;Listen Rihanna, when you die God is taking me to my future.. yeah, she wants to kill me. Shut the [expletive] up.&#8221; A Facebook profile believed to belong to Ortiz also included posts directed at the singer. 
This isn’t the first security incident involving Rihanna. In 2018, a man broke into her Hollywood Hills home and remained inside for several hours. Eduardo A. Leon later pleaded no contest to felony stalking and vandalism charges and a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest. He was sentenced to probation.

One of the suspects accused of throwing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at protesters outside the New York City mayor’s residence purchased materials used in the attack just days beforehand at a Pennsylvania fireworks store, according to a report.
Emir Balat, 18, allegedly bought a roll of safety fuse at a Phantom Fireworks store in Penndel, Pennsylvania, on March 2, five days before the incident near Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, according to surveillance video obtained by CBS News.
The footage reportedly shows Balat entering the store at 12:46 p.m. and purchasing a 20-foot roll of safety fuse for $6.89.
“Coming in and buying that was uneventful,” Phantom Fireworks Vice President and General Counsel William Weimer told <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/video-appears-to-show-gracie-mansion-bomb-suspect-purchasing-fuse-pennsylvania-fireworks-store/?ftag=CNM-00-10aab7e&amp;linkId=917775073">CBS News</a>. “Had he bought 20 rolls of fuse, it might have raised eyebrows. But buying one or two items of anything in this store is almost a nonevent.”

The FBI is investigating the attack as a potential act of terrorism. In a <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/two-isis-supporters-charged-attempting-detonate-explosive-devices-during-protests-outside">statement</a> on Monday, FBI Director Kash Patel said, “The defendants allegedly support ISIS and tried to follow the path of that deadly group by attempting to detonate explosive devices in a crowd. The FBI and our partners have no tolerance for terrorist organizations or those inspired by them to engage in attacks. We are committed to stopping acts of violence and will hold accountable those who seek to harm our citizens.”
The FBI contacted the company’s national security director on Monday, Weimer said.
Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, both residents of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, are accused of traveling to New York City on Saturday to participate in a counter-protest against an anti-Islam demonstration organized by influencer Jake Lang.
Video from the scene shows Balat throwing an ignited device toward police near the mayor’s residence. It has since been identified as an IED.
According to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/explosives-protest-mamdani-434928cf6fa8771bc3dfa5c260ee7b03">Associated Press</a>, the first device struck a barrier and extinguished itself near officers. Balat allegedly ran away, retrieved a second device from Kayumi, lit it, and began running with it before dropping it.
Law enforcement sources told CBS News the devices consisted of sports-drink bottles containing explosive material placed inside glass jars and packed with fragmentation such as nuts and bolts.
The investigation has expanded beyond the initial attack, with law enforcement probing whether additional explosive materials were staged near the scene.
A day after the attempted bombing outside Gracie Mansion, the New York City Police Department <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nyc-terror-scare-deepens-as-bomb-squad-races-to-new-threat-near-mayors-mansion?author=Drew+Berkemeyer&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=6&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=NYC+Terror+Scare+Deepens+As+Bomb+Squad+Races+To+New+Threat+Near+Mayor’s+Mansion">shut down nearby streets</a> after officers discovered another suspicious device inside a parked vehicle on East End Avenue, only blocks from the mayor’s residence.
Officials later determined the device did not pose an immediate threat, but investigators said the discovery underscored the seriousness of the incident and the possibility that additional materials tied to the suspects could still be uncovered.
Authorities have also uncovered additional evidence linked to the two suspects in Pennsylvania. Prosecutors said Balat later told police he was inspired by ISIS and wanted the attack to be “even bigger” than the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. Balat and Kayumi have been charged with five counts related to terrorism and possession of explosive materials. Federal prosecutors say an indictment is expected.

Senator Marsha Blackburn warned Memphis District Attorney Steve Mulroy on Tuesday not to impede the Trump administration’s efforts to crack down on crime after data suggest his office released dozens of violent criminals in December 2025. 
“President Trump and his administration are working around the clock to make Memphis the safest city in America,&#8221; the Tennessee Republican wrote in a <a href="https://dw-wp-production.imgix.net/2026/03/3.10.26-Follow-up-Letter-to-DA-Mulroy2.pdf">letter</a> obtained by The Daily Wire, cosigned by Tennessee State Senator Brent Taylor. &#8220;It is your obligation as Shelby County’s District Attorney to enforce Tennessee’s criminal code and hold violent criminals accountable — not to allow them to be released back onto the streets to reoffend.&#8221;
Data from the <a href="https://memphiscrimebeat.org/">Memphis Crime Beat</a>, a citizen-run website that tracks crime in the city, showed that only 84 defendants received prison time for the 514 “resolved” cases in December 2025. At the same time, Mulroy admitted to Blackburn in a March 6 <a href="https://dw-wp-production.imgix.net/2026/03/2026-03-06-SM-Response-to-Senate-Letter1.pdf">letter</a> obtained by The Daily Wire that 166 of the cases resolved in December were classified as violent offenses.
The rebuke comes amid a back-and-forth between Blackburn and Mulroy over the Democrats&#8217; “soft-on-crime” policies. Mulroy has long faced pressure from state and local Republican officials over his handling of crime. In recent years, Memphis has been ranked as one of the most crime-ridden cities in the country, with consistently high murder rates. The Trump administration has surged law enforcement to the city to assist in a federal operation to reduce crime in Memphis.  
The data team from Memphis Crime Beat found that in December 2025, there were 514 total cases resolved, including 144 cases where there was no prosecution. Of the other 370, 178 received a combination of suspended sentence and probation or probation, 84 received prison time, 63 received diversion, and 45 were released with time served, Memphis Crime Beat Executive Director Leslie Taylor noted in an analysis of the data.
“It would logically follow that, if there were only 84 defendants who received prison time in December 2025, but there were 166 violent cases in that same month, there appear to be dozens of violent criminal defendants — based on your own admission — that received no jail time in December 2025,” Blackburn and Sen. Taylor wrote.
Mulroy told Blackburn on March 6 that 166 of the 514 cases were “designated as ‘violent’ in our system.” He added that there were a total of 187 “serious” cases closed counting Class A, B, and C felonies. In Tennessee, a Class A felony has a prison range of 15 to 60 years, while a Class C felony has a range of three to 15 years. 
&#8220;Most of the cases the letter lists as receiving probation or diversion are either nonviolent cases, cases involving defendants without significant criminal histories, cases where defendants have already spent time (often significant time) in jail, or cases in which judges granted such relief without our agreement,&#8221; Mulroy added.
Blackburn’s letter asked for more information on how many of the 166 violent defendants were released onto the streets and how many of the violent or serious felony cases got diversion or probation. 
“We have made significant progress in making Memphis the safest city in the United States, and we will not allow you to stall the tremendous progress that the city of Memphis has made,” Blackburn said.
Mulroy has denied Blackburn&#8217;s claims that he is a George Soros-backed DA, despite the evidence that Soros <a href="https://www.actionnews5.com/2024/02/08/billionaire-behind-curtain-da-steve-mulroy-denies-funding-claims-after-billionaire-george-soros-revealed-possible-campaign-donor/">contributed</a> to a political action committee that backed his campaign. Senator Taylor, a Republican from Memphis, has attempted to remove Mulroy from office through the legislature.
Leslie Taylor, who said that crime data is often difficult to obtain, told The Daily Wire that what happens after someone is arrested is at least as important as the initial detainment 
“The most recent data from the Shelby County Jail shows that 80% of those booked into jail have been there before, and 49% have been in jail 6 or more times,” she said. “We are concerned that if criminals aren&#8217;t effectively prosecuted, we will be back to square one when federal resources are withdrawn.”

A North Carolina woman is accused of hitting a police officer with her car — but she was released on a $3,000 bail just hours after her arrest.
Tanaezah Michelle Austin, 25, is facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon against a government official in connection with a street takeover early Sunday morning in northwest Charlotte, Fox News <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/driver-accused-attempting-mow-down-cop-during-street-takeover-strolls-free-hours-later-3k-bond">reported</a>.
Officers responded to reports of cars doing donuts in a commercial parking lot at 3:25 a.m. on March 1, according to the outlet. One officer approached a black Kia Optima that was trying to leave. The driver stopped at first, but “began to accelerate rapidly” and struck the officer, who rolled over the hood.
The officer was in full uniform, giving verbal commands to stop and standing where the driver could clearly see him, Fox News said. He was taken to a hospital and treated for minor injuries.
Video of the incident posted to X shows the officer in front of the car before it accelerates toward him and drives away. The X post incorrectly identifies the driver as a man.

Austin was arrested March 2 and released early on March 3, with a probable cause hearing scheduled for March 24.
“These are among the worst of the worst incidents that we have to deal with in Charlotte,” Dan Redford, president of the <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/category/us/charlotte-raleigh-piedmont">Charlotte Fraternal Order of Police</a>, told Fox News. “To see a $3,000 bond for an offender, regardless of whether she has a criminal history or not, when the intent to flee was clearly there, is pathetic.”
The $3,000 bond means Austin may have needed to pay just $300 to be released, Randy Sutton, a retired police lieutenant, told the outlet. Sutton founded The Wounded Blue, a nonprofit that supports injured and disabled law enforcement officers.
“When I hear about someone being released on a $3,000 bond for running over a police officer on video, it boggles my mind,” Sutton said. “She ran over a cop, and she walked out.”
Sutton said the incident wasn’t an accident.
“She saw him, he was communicating with her, and then she just gunned the car toward him,” Sutton said. “This could have been a fatal encounter.”
Austin faced misdemeanor marijuana and paraphernalia charges in 2025, but they were later dropped, Fox News reported.
U.S. Rep. Mark Harris criticized the bond decision.
“Running over a police officer is of the highest level of evil,” Harris said in a statement, according to Fox News. “It’s also a complete slap in the face for our brave law enforcement to see these kinds of criminals allowed right back on the streets. When is Charlotte going to end the crime cycle? When are magistrates going to keep bad guys behind bars? Enough is enough!”
The case comes as cities across the U.S. are seeing a rise in violent criminals being released with low or no bond.

In Chicago, Illinois, a 50-year-old man, who had been arrested 72 times since he was 18, allegedly set a woman on fire in the subway in November. He had most recently been arrested three months earlier, when he was charged with aggravated battery, NBC News <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/woman-set-ablaze-chicago-transit-train-identified-rcna245669">reported</a>.
In a more recent incident in Brooklyn, a man was arrested after allegedly stalking and attacking an Orthodox Jewish family. He was freed on supervised release, despite being charged with assault and multiple counts of harassment as a hate crime and the district attorney’s request for a $50,000 cash bail, The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/judge-frees-accused-antisemitic-assailant-who-threatened-to-kill-brooklyn-family">reported</a> at the time.
