George Washington University law professor emerita W. Burlette Carter declared on Thursday that Karmelo Anthony was entitled to a new trial.
Anthony, 19, was convicted of murder in the stabbing death of Austin Metcalf, 17, and sentenced to serve 35 years in prison. Carter argued that because &#8220;minorities are not interchangeable,&#8221; Anthony was not provided with &#8220;a jury of his peers&#8221; at trial — and she said that alone was grounds for him to receive a new trial.
Carter, a black woman who describes herself on X as a &#8220;descendant of slaves,&#8221; prefaced her <a href="https://x.com/ProfWBCarter/status/2065283542414705051">statement</a> by admitting that she had not yet read a full transcript of the trial — but then immediately argued that she didn&#8217;t need to because it was already clear to her that Anthony had not been granted a fair trial.
&#8220;I have not yet read the full trial transcript. But so far, I do know this. Karmelo Anthony was entitled to a jury of his peers. He did not get that,&#8221; she claimed. &#8220;On that ground alone, he is entitled to a new trial. Minorities are not interchangeable. The prosecutor’s reported proffered reasons for striking all black jurors  — that they were teachers — appears to be pretext.&#8221;
But by law, a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/race-narrative-kicked-into-overdrive-after-jury-selected-in-austin-metcalf-murder-trial">jury</a> does not have to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-race-card-karmelo-anthonys-father-is-playing-gets-scorched-by-facts">reflect the race</a> of the defendant — rather, it must be made up of a reasonable cross section of the community, and both attorneys and judges are to do their best to ensure that the jury is made up of individuals who will decide the case based on the facts presented rather than preexisting biases.
The jury in Anthony&#8217;s case was made up of multiple ethnic minorities — in spite of claims made by Anthony&#8217;s father and others that the jury was &#8220;all white&#8221; — including Asian, Indian, and Hispanic. The prosecution did challenge several potential jurors who were black because they were educators and the murder had happened on school grounds. The judge accepted those challenges as valid.
&#8220;Anthony needs a new lawyer on appeal and in a new trial,&#8221; Carter continued, arguing that Anthony&#8217;s court-appointed attorney had not done a good job. She left out the fact that, after raising some $600,000 via GiveSendGo, Anthony&#8217;s family had gone with a court-appointed lawyer after claiming that he was unable to afford a private attorney.
&#8220;His trial lawyer allowed in opinion evidence that should have been struck. He also seemed unable to appreciate and counter the impact of racial overtones in that case. Those overtones are clear even on Twitter commentary as folks seek to paint Metcalf as having no culpability in what happened and Karmelo as a complete monster,&#8221; she insisted. &#8220;The facts on how the matter escalated are more complicated than that. He and they had no such authority. They are also apparent in the statements that seek to deputize Metcalf and other kids with authority to remove Anthony. They had none and initiated the conflict. That does not mean they should have been killed but it means they have explaining to do. The lawyer for Anthony apparently did not require that explaining. It is fair to ask how the Anthonys ended up selecting that lawyer.&#8221;
Her final jab was aimed at the trial judge, and she claimed that he should &#8220;be disqualified&#8221; because he gave an interview that could have &#8220;negatively affected the appeal rights of the defendant.&#8221;

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice has confirmed that an employee has been terminated over her remarks about Karmelo Anthony in the wake of his murder conviction and subsequent 35-year prison sentence.
The TDCJ confirmed to <a href="https://www.dallasnews.com/news/courts/article/karmelo-anthony-parole-supervisor-facebook-comment-22302990.php">The Dallas Morning News</a> that Donna Robinson was no longer with the department after she posted on Facebook about the case, saying that she believed Anthony was likely to be &#8220;protected&#8221; in prison. She also added, &#8220;I&#8217;m just glad we didn&#8217;t have to bury another Black child. Let them start burying some of theirs for a change. FK&#8217;em I said what I said.&#8221;

The TDCJ said in a statement to The Dallas Morning News that Robinson&#8217;s comments undercut the department in a way that was deemed unacceptable, and after a review of her public statements, she was fired.
&#8220;These statements are incompatible with TDCJ policy and values. They demonstrate bias and a lack of the impartiality essential to the fair administration of justice in Texas,&#8221; the statement said, noting that employees were expected on a regular basis to make decisions in the workplace that had to be free from bias. &#8220;Discriminatory or inflammatory conduct that erodes public confidence in the criminal justice system will not be tolerated.&#8221;
Anthony, 19, was convicted for the murder of Austin Metcalf, 17 — whom he fatally stabbed at a high school track meet — and was sentenced to 35 years in prison.

A Howard University professor is under fire for blaming Austin Metcalf’s father for not teaching his son enough about black culture, which she seemed to insinuate resulted in his murder.
Karmelo Anthony was convicted Tuesday of murdering Austin at a track meet in April 2025 and was sentenced to 35 years in prison.
Austin’s father, Jeff Metcalf, admonished Anthony for making the case about race and told him he’s been feeling “pure unfiltered rage” while grieving the loss of his son.
“I said from day one, this was never about race, please don’t politicize it,” Jeff said. “But what did you choose to do, both. It’s about right and wrong. We’re all humans. We all bleed the same color.”
“You failed your parents, you failed yourself, and you failed society. You don’t belong in this community,” he continued,  “You’re going to prison. You can’t even look me in the eyes right now, but you can stab my f*cking son in the heart.”
Dr. Stacey Patton <a href="https://drstaceypatton1865.substack.com/p/dear-jeff-metcalf-your-son-is-dead">published an article</a> on Substack on Wednesday titled, “Dear Jeff Metcalf: Your Son Is Dead Because You Failed to Teach Him That Black Boys Have Boundaries.”
Patton responded to the grieving father’s heartbreaking victim’s impact statement by saying it was time to “talk about Jeff Metcalf’s failure as a father.” She said this was appropriate to do because it was the same treatment given to the families of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and Tamir Rice.
“In your own memorial language, you told us about the kind of white boyhood Austin was raised inside. It was a boyhood steeped in conquest language, hunting rituals, warrior fantasies, masculine toughness, and the romance of force,” she wrote. “You told us about a child praised not just for being kind, curious, gentle, or careful, but for becoming a ‘leader’ and a ‘warrior’ in a racist culture where those words too often mean dominance.”
She argued Austin Metcalf “learned early how to hold a weapon, how to aim, how to take down a living thing, how to be proud of the kill, how to have that moment folded into the mythology of father and son,&#8221; and that set him up to be a victim of violence.
“YOU taught Austin what it meant to be a ‘warrior.’ YOU taught him that toughness was honorable. YOU taught him that taking up space was normal. YOU taught him that confrontation was courage. YOU socialized Austin into entitlement long before he ever reached that track meet,” Patton wrote in the lengthy essay.
“YOU failed to teach your boy that black children have boundaries. YOU failed [to] teach humility, restraint, or the sacred fact that another person’s body is not your jurisdiction. YOU failed to teach him that another child’s space is not a challenge to be conquered. … YOU obviously failed to teach your son that touching, confronting, crowding, testing, or policing another person can have consequences. You failed, Jeff,” she added.
The Howard professor ultimately concluded that “black children have good reason to be on guard around white bodies.”
She went on to say she was glad Karmelo Anthony never looked the grieving father in the eye, as he had requested while he read his statement. 
“There was power in him not looking at you,” Patton wrote. “There was refusal in it. There was survival in it. There was an ancient knowing in it. Because black people know what it means when a white man demands eye contact from a black child after already deciding what that child is. We know the old ritual. We know that sometimes ‘look at me’ is not a request for humanity. It is a demand for surrender. And Karmelo did not surrender.”
Professor Patton’s Substack has nearly fifty thousand followers, and her open letter to Jeff Metcalf has received nearly two thousand likes. But not everyone was happy with it. 
“Demonic,” one commenter replied.
“This is pretty disgusting,” another person <a href="https://x.com/AdiMagnolia/status/2065213824828113320">wrote</a>. “They’re asserting a right to murder white people who aren’t docile, deferential, and subordinate. Who don’t ‘know their place.’ Some of them have become the racists they claim to hate.”
“Black boys, and all boys for that matter, should have a boundary if not stabbing someone to death. That’s the boundary,” another <a href="https://x.com/mattvanswol/status/2065263527108006335">wrote</a>. “It’s an extremely easy boundary NOT to cross, billions of people live their whole lives without ever crossing it. If there’s ANY boundary, it’s that.”

Professor Blames Austin Metcalf’s Father For Lesson He Says Was Never Taught

A 30-year-old pregnant mother from Indiana was found dead in Mexico more than three months after she and her children were reported missing.
Makala Pendley was found dead earlier this week in a village in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, according to local officials. Pendley was six months pregnant when she disappeared with her seven children in February.
Her sister, Mauricia Lambert, said in a <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/makala-pendley">GoFundMe</a> that Pendley was found “stabbed, raped, sodomized, naked, with her head bashed in.” Mexican authorities said Pendley died from traumatic brain injury caused by blunt-force trauma, according to local reports.
After identifying Pendley&#8217;s body, authorities began searching for her children, who were believed to have been with her, and for her partner, Joseph Jude Butler Jr., whom Mexican officials identified as a suspect in the case.
The children were later found in “good health” in the San Cristóbal de las Casas neighborhood, where they were immediately placed under government protection. Butler was arrested shortly after, as <a href="https://www.indystar.com/story/news/crime/2026/06/11/makala-pendley-chiapas-state-prosecutor-jorge-luis-llaven-abarca-joseph-jude-butler-jr-arrest/90509380007/">announced</a> by Chiapas State Prosecutor Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca during a Facebook Live broadcast on Monday.
“In the coming hours, his criminal responsibility will be determined, and he may be brought before justice,” Llaven Abarca stated. “We will seek the maximum sentence of 100 years for this perpetrator of femicide.”
Just a few days prior, Llaven Abarca said authorities had found the body of a deceased woman in the Elambó Bajo area of Zinacantán.
“Based on the time of death, she had been at the location where she was found for between 8 and 12 hours,” he said on the broadcast just days before the identification of the body.
Pendley and her children were reported missing on February 25 after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children issued an alert. They were believed to have left Indianapolis and traveled to Mexico.
Pendley was found alive in Mexico last month after her sister told <a href="https://fox59.com/indiana-news/pregnant-indy-mom-found-murdered-in-mexico-her-missing-kids-found-safe/">FOX59</a> that she had fled there because she feared “her children would be taken away from her.” Authorities took custody of her children at the time before later releasing them back to Pendley.
During Monday&#8217;s broadcast, Mexican authorities said American officials informed them that Butler has a history of criminal activity. Llaven Abarca said Butler had an active warrant in Alaska and had previously been detained in the United States in connection with allegations including assault, robbery, fraud, illegal weapons possession, intimidation, and rape.
Butler and Pendley had been in an on-and-off “toxic relationship” since Pendley was 16, according to the Indianapolis Star. This includes a legal incident in August 2025 where Pendley claimed she was assaulted by Butler in Yucatan, Mexico.
Pendley’s body and her seven children are expected to be returned to Indianapolis.

Texas Democrat Rep. Jasmine Crockett doubled down on her defense of Karmelo Anthony, claiming his murder conviction for fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf was evidence of a “broken system.” 
Crockett told TMZ on Wednesday that the sentence of 35 years was excessive &#8220;for a kid who had decided to go under a tent that was not his team&#8217;s tent, as it was raining, and simply didn&#8217;t want to be put out in the rain by some random kid that he didn&#8217;t know, who was larger than him.&#8221; 
&#8220;Because if a white boy would have said that they were afraid of a black boy, something tells me that that jury that didn&#8217;t have any black people on it, they would have believed him in his fear,&#8221; she added.
 The failed Senate candidate said her “heart breaks for so many reasons.” Anthony was sentenced to 35 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of stabbing Metcalf at a track meet in Frisco, Texas, in April 2025. 
“It takes me back to what actually made me decide to get into this legislative work in the first place, because I know that our systems are broken. And what we saw with that verdict is the evidence of a broken system,” Crockett said.

She went on to claim that “a lot of people don&#8217;t know what it is to live as a black person in this country” and that the outcome would have been different had Anthony been white instead of black. 
“Oh my God. I know Collin County. So absolutely,” she said when asked if she thought race was a factor. “And unfortunately, that was not the county for a black boy.”
Crockett continued to downplay the incident, noting that some people referred to the murder weapon “as a tool” and called the knife a “small object.” She also claimed that Anthony should have been given mercy because he only stabbed Metcalf once.

During a Tuesday podcast, Crockett claimed that the Metcalf family, who are white, doesn&#8217;t understand the &#8220;fear and agony&#8221; of black women.  
“Black women, especially black women who have black male children live in fear and agony every single day … fear and agony that I promise you the Metcalfs probably never spent a day living that way and we’re going to have to have just some real conversations about race in this country,” Crockett said.
The case has garnered national headlines as leftist activists claim that the jury was racist, despite testimony from multiple black teen witnesses who reportedly said Anthony was in the wrong.

More than 50 kids and teens are facing criminal charges after a massive opening-day brawl at Hersheypark, a Pennsylvania amusement park, that sent terrified families scrambling for cover and forced the shutdown of at least one ride.

Video circulating online appears to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/shorts/DmS-dZB8uq0">show</a> another brawl breaking out near a roller coaster, forcing staffers to temporarily shut down the Skyrush ride.
“These actions caused serious inconvenience to Hersheypark staff and patrons of the park. This caused an emergency stop to the Skyrush ride,” officers said, <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/06/10/us-news/55-kids-teens-charged-in-hersheypark-opening-day-brawl/?dicbo=v2-R9ssdP0">according</a> to the New York Post.
Police said the disturbance began around 6:50 p.m. near the Trailblazer roller coaster, where two groups were involved in a verbal altercation before the confrontation escalated into a larger melee. Police were dispatched to assist security in separating the fighting groups.
But the chaos didn&#8217;t end there.
Authorities said participants later moved to the food court area, where another fight broke out. Witnesses estimated that between 50 and 60 teens were involved. 
Some participants were escorted out of the park through a side gate, but police said they later returned to the main entrance, where another confrontation erupted around 7:30 p.m.
The investigation took around three months as police reviewed extensive video evidence gathered from witnesses, security footage, and social media posts.
Among those charged as adults were Omar Ibrahim, 19, Jerome Ross III, 18, and Quaneek Williams, 18. PennLive <a href="https://www.pennlive.com/news/2026/06/giant-brawl-forced-hersheypark-to-stop-rollercoaster-as-parents-hid-under-tables-police.html">reported</a> that Ibrahim and Ross were charged in connection with the alleged theft of a one-day admittance wristband from a minor. Williams was charged with one felony and four misdemeanors. 
No arrests have been made as of Tuesday night. Preliminary hearings for the three adult defendants are scheduled for July 7. 
Hersheypark said the individuals involved were quickly removed from the property.
“There was an altercation between a group of teenagers in Hersheypark the evening of Friday, April 3,&#8221; the park said in a statement. &#8220;Police responded to assist Park security in swiftly addressing the situation and removing those involved from the Park. As safety is our top priority, Hersheypark has a zero tolerance policy for behavior of this type. Those who do not abide by our policy will no longer be welcome on our property.”
While Hersheypark does not currently enforce a chaperone policy for minors, the park implemented a new photo verification process for same-day re-entry following the opening-day disruption. 
Under the policy, guests who leave the park and later return must have their photo verified against an image taken during their initial exit.
“This process helps ensure that admission is used only by the original ticket holder for same-day re-entry,” a park spokesperson said.

Federal authorities arrested a man accused of threatening to shoot ICE agents as they were trying to nab an illegal immigrant target, The Daily Wire has learned.
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents in Yakima, Washington, went to arrest an illegal immigrant who ran from authorities on May 19 and eventually found him at the home of Manuel Lozano, an American citizen, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Lozano allegedly had a pistol on his waistband and told the agents &#8220;I&#8217;ve got something for you.&#8221;
He then allegedly disappeared toward the back of the residence and returned with an AR-15-style rifle. As the agents began walking away, Lozano exclaimed, &#8220;I have 60 rounds and have enough to smoke all you … You see an AR and walk away,&#8221; DHS said.
Federal authorities arrested Lozano on June 4 and seized two firearms, firearms parts, and mixed ammunition from his home.
“This man threatened to shoot an HSI agent with an AR-15 rifle,” Acting Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement. “He has now been charged with threatening a federal law enforcement officer.&#8221;
&#8220;Secretary Mullin has been clear: anyone who threatens to kill an ICE law enforcement officer will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The men and women in ICE law enforcement are simply doing their jobs and enforcing the laws passed by Congress. This violence against ICE law enforcement must end,&#8221; she added.
ICE has <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2026/01/08/radical-rhetoric-sanctuary-politicians-leads-unprecedented-1300-increase-assaults">documented</a> a 1,300% increase in assaults, a 3,300% increase in vehicle assaults, and an 8,000% increase in death threats against agency personnel.
In one recent example, the FBI arrested a rioter outside ICE&#8217;s Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, New Jersey, who allegedly <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ill-kill-your-whole-fcking-family-leftist-rioters-arrested-during-wild-clash-with-ice">threatened</a> to kill an ICE officer and his family, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said last month.

Members of the group shouted, &#8220;F*ck Austin,&#8221; and said they would &#8220;piss on his grave,” Nealy was told. They also shouted that Metcalf&#8217;s friends, who are teenagers, “should be dead&#8221; and spit at them.

One friend of Metcalf&#8217;s, who appears to be a minor, posted on X, &#8220;Doing this sh*t at us for no f*cking reason other than us being there to support our dead friend. No f*cking respect at all when we have been friendly to everyone regardless of side of the case.&#8221;
Journalist Sarah Fields, who was in the courthouse every day of the high-profile trial, asked others to not share the video of the harassment, since it shows the faces of grieving minors and identifying markers, presumably a license plate.
&#8220;According to those involved, individuals screamed that they were glad Austin was dead and followed and filmed them from the courthouse steps all the way to their car,&#8221; Fields reported. &#8220;The incident has been reported to law enforcement, and I have provided the identity of the streamer involved to the family.&#8221;

In less than a week, visitors from around the world will descend on Atlanta for the FIFA World Cup 2026, but many residents worry that the city&#8217;s transit system, known as MARTA, isn&#8217;t ready after three attacks in the past two weeks, including one killing.
&#8220;I&#8217;m nervous that it won&#8217;t be ready by next week for the world coming here,&#8221; one passenger told The Daily Wire.
At MARTA&#8217;s North Avenue Station, riders described a system they believe has become increasingly unsafe, citing violent crime, fare evasion, and a lack of visible security. The Daily Wire interviewed several passengers at the station, many of whom said they no longer feel safe while riding.
&#8220;When I say it&#8217;s not safe, there is no security,&#8221; one passenger said, pointing to multiple people walking through fare gates without paying. MARTA officials say fare evasion costs the transit system <a href="https://www.gpb.org/news/2025/06/25/how-can-you-be-confident-riders-officials-question-atlanta-transit-readiness-ahead">$7 million</a> per year.

Other riders said they have witnessed fights on trains. One passenger described an incident in which another rider struck a young girl without provocation. &#8220;There was a little Hispanic girl that got hit on the train,&#8221; the passenger said. &#8220;She was crying. It was really sad to see.&#8221;
Passengers also said weapons are not an uncommon sight. &#8220;Somebody dropped something. It was a gun,&#8221; one rider said. Another passenger recalled watching someone pull out a knife inside a crowded train car. &#8220;I&#8217;ve heard everything from death to rape to murder,&#8221; another rider said.
Several passengers said the trains get worse at night. 
&#8220;Absolutely not,&#8221; one rider said when asked if they felt safe riding MARTA at night.
&#8220;Nighttime is when I like to call them the nightcrawlers — the people you wouldn&#8217;t see in the daytime. The train is their home,&#8221; said another person. 
The riders&#8217; fears are reflected in the numbers and data. 
MARTA openly subsidizes fares for homeless riders while paying riders say they are left to deal with the consequences, such as drug use, outbursts, and mental disorders that can accompany those taking shelter on the train.

Violent incidents on MARTA&#8217;s rail lines occur at nearly four times the national average for public transit systems, according to federal officials. 
Those concerns have drawn the attention of Washington. The Trump administration launched a federal investigation into MARTA following a series of violent attacks on the transit system.
&#8220;Every American should be disturbed by the horrific crimes we have seen on MARTA in the last month,&#8221; U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said.
&#8220;No one should be forced to fear for their safety simply because they choose to ride public transit,&#8221; Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp <a href="https://www.11alive.com/article/sports/soccer/world-cup/kemp-offers-help-to-marta-all-they-gotta-do-is-call-and-ask-us/85-1b493562-a5b2-4c9e-8859-809741d9f59b?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook_11Alive">told</a> Atlanta Democratic Mayor Andre Dickens. “All they gotta do is call and ask us.” 
And while riders raise questions, Dickens projects confidence in the city’s transit system for the World Cup. “MARTA is going to step up big,” he <a href="https://www.11alive.com/article/sports/soccer/world-cup/atlanta-mayor-andre-dickens-city-officials-world-cup-pep-rally/85-87e12a83-601e-43cc-9030-3e77d59d94aa?utm_source=chatgpt.com">said</a>. 
While MARTA operates independently of City Hall, Dickens is not entirely removed from the transit system&#8217;s leadership. The mayor appoints three members to MARTA&#8217;s board of directors, giving him significant influence over the authority&#8217;s direction and oversight. As Atlanta prepares to welcome visitors from around the globe, that relationship is likely to intensify scrutiny of the mayor&#8217;s handling of transit safety.

The father of slain teen Austin Metcalf unloaded on convicted murderer Karmelo Anthony while reading his victim impact statement inside the courtroom on Tuesday.
Anthony was convicted Tuesday of murdering Austin at a track meet in April 2025 and was sentenced to 35 years in prison.
Austin&#8217;s father, Jeff Metcalf, admonished Anthony for making the case about race and told him he&#8217;s been feeling &#8220;pure unfiltered rage&#8221; while grieving the loss of his son.
&#8220;I said from day one, this was never about race, please don&#8217;t politicize it,&#8221; Jeff said. &#8220;But what did you choose to do, both. It&#8217;s about right and wrong. We&#8217;re all humans. We all bleed the same color.&#8221;
Notably, Anthony&#8217;s family held a press conference after Austin&#8217;s murder and suggested Anthony was a victim of racial injustice. They forcibly removed Jeff from the presser when he said he wanted to speak with the Anthony family and possibly pray with them. The Anthony family also started a fundraiser in the wake of the murder, which accumulated more than $600,000. Many comments in support of the fundraiser were racially charged.
Continuing to address Anthony directly, Jeff told the 19-year-old to stop looking down and said his family had been robbed of Austin.
&#8220;A piece of me died with my son, and I&#8217;m expected to keep living,&#8221; he said. &#8220;You&#8217;re going to prison. I forgave you the day it happened. I don&#8217;t forgive what you did.&#8221;
&#8220;You&#8217;re free to make choices all you want, but you&#8217;re not free from those consequences,&#8221; the father continued. &#8220;You will face those consequences starting today.&#8221;
&#8220;People think that grief is sadness but it&#8217;s not. It&#8217;s rage! Pure unfiltered rage,&#8221; Jeff reportedly shouted while slamming his hands on the table in front of him. &#8220;You failed your parents, you failed yourself and you failed society, You don&#8217;t belong in this community.&#8221;
&#8220;You&#8217;re going to prison,&#8221; he added. &#8220;You can&#8217;t even look me in the eyes right now but you can stab my f*cking son in the heart.&#8221;

Austin&#8217;s mother, Meghan Metcalf, also delivered a victim impact statement, telling Anthony he should consider himself fortunate given the pain he inflicted on the Metcalf family.
“My son was murdered,&#8221; she said. &#8220;He didn’t just die. He was taken from us, just as he was starting to live.&#8221;
&#8220;You may have just been given a sentence of 35 years — you should feel lucky because I&#8217;ve been sentenced to a life without my son,&#8221; she added.
Austin&#8217;s twin brother, Hunter Metcalf, told Anthony that he took &#8220;everything&#8221; away from him when he murdered Austin. Hunter notably held Austin as he died from Anthony&#8217;s vicious attack. Hunter also told Anthony that every morning he still sees Austin&#8217;s bedroom door shut, causing him immense pain.
Hunter also reportedly told Anthony to look him in the eyes when he was speaking. But Anthony refused, looking down instead. “If you could just look me in the eye while I speak, I would really respect that,” Hunter said.
Anthony&#8217;s murder trial started on June 1 with jury selection and wrapped in nine days. Video footage and witness testimony — even from defense witnesses — generally indicated that Anthony provoked the situation with Metcalf and deadly force was not needed, contradicting the self-defense argument from Anthony’s team. Anthony did not take the stand during the trial.

A New York man was fatally shot Monday afternoon after confronting a teenager who was talking loudly on a cell phone aboard a city bus in the Bronx, police said. 
Jonathan Pettigrew, 41, was riding a Bx36 bus around 2:30 p.m. near East Tremont Avenue and White Plains Road when he confronted the teen about the volume of his phone conversation. The teen then pulled a handgun and shot Pettigrew in the abdomen, according to authorities.
First responders rushed Pettigrew to Jacobi Medical Center, where he later died.
Police said the suspect fled the scene and remains at large.
An employee at the nearby Family Mexican Deli told Gothamist that surveillance video appeared to show the gunman fleeing south on White Plains Road. Authorities said the suspect was last seen wearing a white T-shirt.
“ Right now it&#8217;s just hard for me to believe what&#8217;s going on because I&#8217;m really, like, in a state of shock,” Pettigrew’s older brother, Avery Pettigrew, <a href="https://gothamist.com/news/police-seek-suspect-in-killing-of-father-of-7-on-an-mta-bus-in-the-bronx">told</a> Gothamist. 
He said his brother struggled with anxiety and was particularly sensitive to loud noise.
“ He got this anxiety where he, like me, we can&#8217;t be around a lot of noise,” Pettigrew said. “I guess the person that was on the phone was being very disrespectful and loud, and it was bothering him.”
Pettigrew worked in catering and was the father of seven children. He was likely on his way to pick up his youngest daughter from school when he was shot, two of his aunts <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/08/nyregion/bronx-bus-fatal-shooting.html">told</a> The New York Times.
 “This is his routine: He drops her off at school, he goes to work, he gets off work, he picks her up,” his aunt, Sandra Ferguson, said. “I just can’t believe this.”
“He took real good care of that little girl,” another aunt, Sabrina Vereen, said.

A Navy sailor admitted Monday that he strangled and killed a fellow service member before hiding her body in a suitcase and dumping it in a wooded area near Naval Station Norfolk. The guilty plea is raising questions of why military officials failed to remove him from service despite multiple prior allegations of violence against women.
Culinary Specialist 3rd Class Jeremiah Copeland pleaded guilty during a military court-martial to the unpremeditated murder of Petty Officer 3rd Class Angelina Resendiz, a 21-year-old sailor assigned to the guided-missile destroyer USS James E. Williams.
&#8220;I killed CS3 Resendiz on May 29, 2025,&#8221; Copeland told the military judge. &#8220;I strangled her with my hands.&#8221;
Under a plea agreement accepted by the court, Copeland also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault by strangulation, indecent recording, obstruction of justice, and making a false official statement. He faces a minimum sentence of 40 years and two months in prison, a dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and mandatory registration as a sex offender. 
According to court proceedings, Resendiz entered Copeland&#8217;s barracks room on May 29, 2025. Copeland admitted the two were drinking alcohol when an argument began after she saw something on his phone. He told the court he strangled her on the floor of the room before hiding her body in a suitcase in his closet. 
Investigators later determined Copeland kept Resendiz&#8217;s body concealed for several days before transporting it to a wooded area roughly ten miles from the base. Her decomposing remains were discovered on June 9, 2025, nearly two weeks after she vanished. 
But even before Resendiz&#8217;s death, Copeland was already facing allegations involving other women. 
Military prosecutors had previously accused Copeland of raping a fellow sailor in November 2024 and sexually assaulting and attempting to strangle another service member months earlier. Court records also show he was facing a separate rape allegation involving a civilian woman in Norfolk just days before Resendiz disappeared.
His history reportedly stretches back even further. Before joining the Navy in 2023, a Washington state judge issued a temporary sexual assault protection order against Copeland involving an underage girl. He was also accused in a separate incident of kissing and groping another underage girl against her will. 
Resendiz&#8217;s mother, Esmeralda Castle, has repeatedly argued that Navy leadership failed to act despite numerous warning signs. 
&#8220;This situation was absolutely preventable,&#8221; Castle said before trial proceedings began.
&#8220;If they would have dealt with him when he started harming women, he would never have gotten to Angie,&#8221; she later told <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/navy-sailor-admits-killing-fellow-service-member-mother-questions-missed-warning-signs">Fox News</a>. 
Castle has been among the most vocal critics of the Navy&#8217;s response to her daughter&#8217;s disappearance. Resendiz was last seen on May 29, 2025, but a statewide missing-person alert was not issued until five days later after military officials initially classified her as absent without leave.
The delay sparked criticism from family members and comparisons to the case of Army Specialist Vanessa Guillen, whose <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/article/vanessa-guillen-fort-hood.html">murder</a> prompted sweeping reforms throughout the military regarding sexual harassment and assault investigations.
Friends and family described Resendiz as a bright and ambitious young sailor who hoped to build a career in military culinary arts. According to her mother, Resendiz aimed to one day join the Navy&#8217;s elite culinary competition team and cook for world leaders.
Following Monday&#8217;s plea hearing, Castle met privately with Copeland. 
&#8220;I thanked him for telling the truth,&#8221; she <a href="https://www.stripes.com/branches/navy/2026-06-08/sailor-pleads-guilty-death-angelina-resendiz-21906865.html?mc_cid=9ce47e81e4&amp;mc_eid=4c1d7240e1">said</a>. 
While Castle said hearing Copeland finally admit responsibility brought her &#8220;peace of mind,&#8221; she remains convinced the tragedy should never have happened. 
&#8220;We have statutes, and we have policies, and we have procedures that were implemented by Congress to protect service members from this type of violence,&#8221; Castle said. &#8220;And nothing&#8217;s changed.&#8221;
The military judge is expected to formally impose a sentence under the terms of the plea agreement following the conclusion of court-martial proceedings.
