A celebrity chef in California posted a video on Twitter explaining why his restaurant chain will remain open despite Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom&#8217;s lockdown mandate.
Chef Andrew Gruel, who is the founder, CEO, and executive chef of Slapfish, which is a seafood restaurant franchise based in Huntingdon Beach, California, responded to backlash he has received for criticizing the onerous lockdown edicts in California.

&#8220;So, here&#8217;s the situation,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;Do we take the pandemic seriously? Of course we do. Am I saying that we shouldn&#8217;t close outdoor dining? Yes, I am. At every single juncture along the way here, from the beginning shut-down to today, we&#8217;ve listened to all of the advice from our government officials, only to be shut down over and over and over again, and then not compensated for the elements that we put in place in our businesses in order to protect our customers.&#8221;

&#8220;There is zero scientific evidence that proves that outdoor dining is contributing to a rise in cases related to this, alright?&#8221; Gruel went on. &#8220;I am only saying that we are going to continue dining outdoors, because I can get on an airplane, and I can fly and eat and do whatever I want — and don&#8217;t tell me it&#8217;s the HEPA filters, okay? Because that&#8217;s not the case. You don&#8217;t turn those on until you get onto the plane. Before that, everybody&#8217;s fornicating on top of each other.&#8221;
Gruel then noted how large crowds are free to meander about in big-box stores such as Walmart and Target while state and local authorities clamp down on activities such as outdoor dining.
&#8220;Therefore, screw that,&#8221; Gruel concluded. &#8220;We&#8217;re staying open outdoors. It&#8217;s that simple.&#8221;
&#8220;I&#8217;m not an a**hole, the governor is,&#8221; Gruel added.
Gruel has been vocal on Twitter about his frustration regarding the lockdown on California restaurants and the hypocrisy of California politicians such as Newsom.

In a Wednesday live-stream from his Texas home, Austin Mayor Steve Adler apologized for instructing residents to stay home when possible in a November video, while he himself was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/austin-mayor-promoted-stay-home-message-while-on-vacation-in-mexico">filming that very video from a timeshare</a> in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
“The first week of November, my daughter got married here in Austin, and like many other brides, she had to cancel her original plans in order to follow the rules, and instead she had a small, mostly family, very private wedding,” <a href="https://www.facebook.com/austinmayoradler/">said</a> Adler.
“Afterwards, a small, mostly family group traveled to Mexico. I want you to know that I regret that travel. I wouldn&#8217;t travel now, I didn’t over Thanksgiving, and I won’t over Christmas, and no one should. Everyone should be avoiding non-essential travel now because we’re in the orange area,” he added.
Although Adler didn’t break any health orders from the state of Texas or from himself by traveling to Mexico at the time that he did, the Austin mayor neglected to tell anyone that he was encouraging people to stay home — remarking that it was “no time to relax” when it comes to the coronavirus — when he himself was on vacation out of the country.
KVUE, which first <a href="https://www.kvue.com/article/news/investigations/defenders/austin-mayor-steve-adler-coronavirus-covid-19-daughter-wedding-vacation/269-d76bf9b8-54bb-4736-9b00-80fdf2953145">reported</a> on the trip, has also noted that the wedding Adler attended for his daughter two days before he and seven others took off to Mexico on a private jet went against the city’s recommendations to avoid gatherings of more than 10 people.
“Now, I fear that the travel that I did, which took place during a safer period, followed the color-coded rules, could lead to some taking riskier behavior now. I recognize that my travel set a bad example, I recognize that the fact that I took that trip, and at the same time was continuing to urge people to be cautious, is confusing,” said Adler. 
 
“I know that others have chosen not to travel under the same circumstances, and I know that in my position, I need to send a clearer message. I’m sorry I took that trip. It was a lapse in judgment, and I want you to know that I apologize,” he concluded.
The Austin mayor is just one of many politicians who have drawn public scrutiny for behaving out of line with their own messaging.

And at the beginning of November, California Governor Gavin Newsom visited the famed French Laundry — where a group of at least 12 people from multiple families reportedly <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/no-masks-all-indoors-award-winning-journalist-claims-22-people-attended-newsom-dinner-not-12-15k-bar-bill">racked up a $15,000 bar tab</a> for a birthday dinner — for a meal that appeared to be held indoors. Newsom, whose office has encouraged people to wear masks between bites of food, did not appear to be wearing a mask at dinner, and was sitting next to two members of the California Medical Association.

Governor Gavin Newsom divided the state of California into five regions on Thursday and announced a new COVID-19 closures metric, which will be used to issue sweeping stay-at-home orders should ICU hospital bed capacity increase past a certain point.
Under the new system, California will give an area 48 hours before issuing a stay-at-home order should ICU bed capacity drop below 15% in a region. The regions include the Northern California region (765,000 residents), the Greater Sacramento region (3 million residents), the San Joaquin region (4.5 million residents), the Bay Area (8.5 million residents), and the Southern California region (23.1 million residents).
While no single region has reached the threshold to trigger a stay-at-home order, Newsom said in a press conference Thursday that each region is expected to hit the 15% ICU bed availability threshold by early December, with the exception of the Bay Area, a region the state of California expects to hit the threshold by mid-to-late December.
“The bottom line is if we don’t act now, our hospital system will be overwhelmed,” <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3TLa2-Q25k">said</a> Newsom. “If we don’t act now, we’ll continue to see a death rate climb, more lives lost.”
Once a regional stay-at-home order takes effect, it will remain in place for three weeks.
Newsom said schools that “received waivers” to open ahead of a stay-at-home order will be allowed to remain open, restaurants will be allowed to continue take-out and delivery service, and retail spaces will be allowed to remain open at 20% capacity.

Earlier this month, ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, Newsom instituted a nightly stay-at-home curfew covering nearly 95% of the state. The governor&#8217;s office described the order in a <a href="https://www.gov.ca.gov/2020/11/19/state-issues-limited-stay-at-home-order-to-slow-spread-of-covid-19/">press release</a> as “the same as the March Stay at Home Order, but applied only between 10 PM and 5 AM and only in purple tier counties that are seeing the highest rates of positive cases and hospitalizations.”

On Wednesday, a judge instructed attorneys representing the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health to return to court next week with medical evidence to justify a three-week ban on outdoor dining that many restaurant owners say could put them out of business.
The Daily News reports Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James Chalfant “appeared sympathetic” to separate lawsuits seeking to lift the restriction filed by the California Restaurant Association and famed attorney Mark Geragos, who owns the Engine Co. No. 28 restaurant in downtown L.A. However, <a href="https://www.dailynews.com/2020/12/02/judge-denies-appeal-to-allow-outdoor-dining-in-la-county/">according</a> to the outlet, “Chalfant said he was reluctant to issue an order that could have a major impact on public health without first reviewing scientific data about the danger of coronavirus transmission at an outdoor dining establishment.”
He scheduled another hearing for next Tuesday when public health officials will have an opportunity to bring forth information that backs up their decision to issue such a directive.
&#8220;An order to show cause means that Los Angeles County, which has banned outdoor dining at restaurants, must finally step forward and show evidence linking outdoor dining to the ongoing rise in coronavirus cases,&#8221; said Jot Condie, president and CEO of the California Restaurant Association. &#8220;Their order was arbitrary and targeted restaurants unfairly, without supporting evidence.&#8221;
&#8220;It is our expectation that if the county is unable to produce evidence justifying this decision, then outdoor dining should be allowed to resume as soon as the stay-at-home order is lifted.&#8221;

Judge Chalfant requested that public health officials explain why L.A. County’s order is more severe than Gov. Gavin Newsom’s reopening strategy for California. <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-12-02/covid-19-la-county-outdoor-dining-ban-judge">According</a> to the L.A. Times, Newsom’s plan “permits outdoor dining and requires a risk-benefit analysis for restrictions that are stricter than those of the state.”
“You have to do a risk-benefit analysis for public health,” Judge Chalfant said. “You don’t just talk about the risk of spreading disease. You have to talk about the benefit of keeping restaurants open.”

Health authorities announced the suspension on outdoor dining last month, citing a surge in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. It restricts restaurants, breweries, wineries, and bars to takeout and delivery orders.
“The persistent high number of cases requires additional safety measures that limit mixing in settings where people are not wearing masks,” Barbara Ferrer, the L.A. County public health director, <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-11-22/l-a-county-suspends-outdoor-dining-at-restaurants-as-coronavirus-surges">said</a> at the time.

County Board of Supervisors. Still, the body voted 3-2 to move forward with the order. Democratic Supervisor Sheila Kuehl was <a href="https://www.foxla.com/news/la-county-supervisor-dines-at-restaurant-hours-after-voting-to-ban-outdoor-dining">caught</a> dining outdoors at a Santa Monica restaurant hours after she voted to uphold the restriction. The ban took effect the next day, on November 25.

Standing beside him, U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson immediately chimed in to say, &#8220;And maybe&#8230; on the other hand, we may want to get back to life as pretty much as close to normal.&#8221;
Speaking with The Sun, Van-Tam said that COVID-19 could &#8220;be with human kind forever&#8221; and may even become a &#8220;seasonal problem.&#8221; When Boris Johnson pushed back on some Van-Tam&#8217;s doomsaying, the professor clarified that he does not believe heavily restrictive measures will persist, even if the virus does.
&#8220;I do like to be challenged when I have, perhaps, not made myself clear, and the Prime Minister has picked me up on this occasion, and it&#8217;s quite alright because it gives me a chance to clarify what I mean here,&#8221; he said.
&#8220;I do not think the Government will continue to have to recommend social distancing, masks, and hand sanitiser forever and a day,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;I hope we will get back to a much more normal world. But, the point I was trying to make was &#8211; do I think, possibly, some of those personal habits for some people will persist longer, and, perhaps, become enduring for some people, yes, I think that&#8217;s possible.&#8221;
Van-Tam later added that COVID-19 could become a seasonal problem like the flu &#8212; something that humans have to learn to live with.
&#8220;I think it&#8217;s going to be with humankind forever,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I think we may get to a point where coronavirus becomes a seasonal problem &#8211; I don&#8217;t want to join too many parallels with flu &#8211; but possibly that is the kind of way we would learn to live it.&#8221;
Van-Tam also stressed the importance of a vaccine for people who want the problem to go away.
&#8220;This vaccine isn&#8217;t going to help you if you don&#8217;t take it. You will need two doses of this vaccine to have full protection,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Watching others take it and hoping it will protect you too doesn&#8217;t work necessarily. We don&#8217;t know if it prevents transmission.&#8221;

Britain&#8217;s Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, called the novel coronavirus, which plunged most of the world into a pandemic and, ultimately, economic downturn, a sign of Mother Nature exerting her considerable power over humanity, potentially over our reluctance to address climate change.
Speaking to a publication called WaterBear, Harry, who now lives in the United States with his wife and young son after separating from the British monarchy in early 2020, said that his wish is for humanity to be the “raindrop that falls from the sky and relieves the parched ground,&#8221; addressing ongoing crimes against nature.
He then suggested that COVID-19 should be a wake-up call &#8212; a form of &#8220;ecological retribution,&#8221; <a href="https://nypost.com/2020/12/02/prince-harry-calls-covid-19-punishment-from-mother-nature/">according to the New York Post</a>.
&#8220;At the end of the day, nature is our life source,” he said. “Somebody said to me at the beginning of the pandemic, it’s almost as though Mother Nature has sent us to our rooms for bad behavior to really take a moment and think about what we’ve done.&#8221;
For Prince Harry, who lives a largely secluded life in <a href="https://pagesix.com/2020/10/18/photos-show-prince-harry-and-meghan-markles-swanky-new-california-digs/?_ga=2.223614299.1595369354.1606948976-1771594080.1509055226">a mega-mansion near Los Angeles, California</a>, the pandemic is a reminder that humanity and nature are &#8220;interconnected.&#8221;
“[The pandemic has] certainly reminded me about how interconnected we all are, not just as people but through nature,” he said, per the NY Post. “We take so much from her and we rarely give a lot back.”
COVID-19, he added, reminded him to encourage action on climate change.
“Every single raindrop that falls from the sky relieves the parched ground,” he said. “What if every single one of us was a raindrop, and if every single one of us cared?”
Prince Harry did not address the greater impact of the coronavirus pandemic in his interview, however, giving no comment on the nearly <a href="https://thehill.com/opinion/finance/520547-the-lockdowns-greater-economic-impact">20 million jobs lost</a> during coronavirus-related lockdowns, nor the global rise in poverty that accompanied the onset of the pandemic. It&#8217;s also not clear Prince Harry is well-informed on the origins or impact of the virus itself, though both his father, Britain&#8217;s Prince Charles, and his brother, Prince William, reportedly contracted COVID-19.
Prince Harry is, however, an environmental activist who, now that he&#8217;s divorced from the royal family, serves as the head of an eco-conscious travel company and gives speeches and interviews largely on the subject of conservation and climate change. That is despite evidence that Prince Harry and his family do not live according to his own environmental edicts; one of the driving factors in Harry and his wife, Meghan&#8217;s, split from the royal family was, reportedly, global attention drawn to their travel habits which, at the time, included a number of non-environmentally friendly private flights across Europe to vacation in high-end villas owned by their celebrity friends.
Since splitting from the royals, Prince Harry, Meghan, and their one-year-old son have lived in a series of mega-mansions, finally settling in a $14 million pad in southern California. Although information about the home&#8217;s environmental impact is not readily available, it&#8217;s likely that Prince Harry and his family emit far more carbon into the atmosphere than the average American family.

On Monday, The Daily Beast published an attack on South Dakota GOP Governor Kristi Noem, insinuating that Noem’s policies regarding coronavirus restrictions were connected to the death of her own 98-year-old grandmother, who died November 22 in a nursing home.
The article, titled, “<a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/south-dakota-gov-kristi-noems-grandmother-died-in-nursing-home-ravaged-by-covid-19?via=twitter_page">Anti-Mask Guv’s Grandmother Died in Nursing Home Ravaged by COVID</a>,” bore the sub-headline, “And yet Kristi Noem continues to downplay the virus, refuse a mask mandate, and ignore the terrible price her state is paying.” The Daily Beast’s tweet regarding the article looked like this:

Despite the fact that there was no evidence that Noem’s grandmother, Arlys Arnold, died of the coronavirus, and had even reportedly tested negative for it, the article linked her death to 13 other residents of the nursing home over a two-week period as a means to rip Noem, writing of the “lunacy of Noem’s downplaying of the pandemic”:
<blockquote>The other 12 of the 13 deaths between Nov. 14 and Nov. 28 at the Estelline Nursing Home are described by the administrator, Mike Ward, as “COVID-related.” “All but one,” Ward told The Daily Beast.
But one less is still a dozen COVID deaths in a short period in one small facility. The number makes clear the lunacy of Noem’s downplaying of the pandemic and her continued refusal to impose a statewide mask mandate.</blockquote>
The article then accused Noem of being indifferent to others’ losses but sensitive to her own loss:
<blockquote>Noem remained fixated on livelihoods rather than lives and chose to tweet that day about the importance of supporting small businesses by shopping. None of this is to say that Noem is at all cold-blooded when the lives include one of her own clan.</blockquote>

The Daily Beast article continued: “For Noem to have mentioned the dozen other dead would have raised the specter of the virus that killed them even as she was continuing to claim that she had brought it under control by invoking personal responsibility rather than mandating a vital precaution — a face mask — that is as simple and unimposing as wearing a seatbelt.”

Restrictive orders mandated by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health have caused some local elected officials to consider breaking away from the agency, exploring other alternatives that might better serve the cities they represent.
Beverly Hills is the most prominent locale contemplating such a change, where councilmembers unanimously passed a <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-12-02/beverly-hills-council-oppose-los-angeles-county-outdoor-dining-ban">resolution</a> opposing the county’s three-week ban on outdoor dining during a meeting on Tuesday. City leaders are demanding the powerful L.A. County Board of Supervisors repeal the directive, which they say is not backed by scientific evidence and is damaging small businesses.

“I am enraged by what the majority of county supervisors voted on without having the data to do so, especially after all of us, these many, many months, have learned that eating outdoors was the safest way during COVID,” said Beverly Hills Councilmember Lili Bosse.
Steve Scott Springer, general manager of Spago Beverly Hills, said during public comment that the restaurant has had to lay off at least 160 employees because of strict guidelines imposed by the county that “devastated” the eatery.
“I think the premise is that the decisions that were made for the entire county may not be the best decision for each of the cities and I think that we need to have an independent voice,” <a href="https://www.foxla.com/news/several-mayors-want-their-own-public-health-agencies">said</a> Beverly Hills Mayor Lester Friedman.
The Los Angeles Times <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-12-02/beverly-hills-council-oppose-los-angeles-county-outdoor-dining-ban">reports</a> that councilmembers asked city staff “to research the idea of forming a Beverly Hills public health department, which would allow the city to set its own rules for combating a pandemic.”
Beverly Hills is not alone. There are 88 cities in L.A. County, the most populous in the nation, with more than ten million people residing in a vast territory. Those communities, however, are not monolithic. That realization has resulted in a growing number of mayors and councilmembers publicly concluding that local health decisions should be based on local data.
“I think the supervisors need to come look at each region individually and see how we’re faring,” said West Covina Councilman Dario Castellanos. “What we’re seeing here is not the same thing they may be seeing in Downtown L.A.”
West Covina Mayor Tony Wu described the county’s order as “one policy fits all,” claiming local businesses “have been jerked around, back and forth.” He also said L.A. Public Health decisions are harming children, most of whom have not been inside a school for several months.

Wu said the city could establish its own agency or collaborate with existing health departments in other cities, like Pasadena, the only city in L.A. County that currently allows outdoor dining.

<a href="https://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2020/12/01/smaller-cities-separate-health-departments-los-angeles-county/">According</a> to CBS2 News, Lancaster Mayor Rex Perris said he’s in discussions with the mayors of Palmdale and Santa Clarita about creating a smaller, regional health department. Lancaster is about a 70-mile drive from L.A.
ABC7 <a href="https://abc7.com/los-angeles-coronavirus-update-la-dining-ban-covid-19/8424699/">reports</a> the cities of Whittier and Hawaiian Gardens are also exploring other options.
On Tuesday, L.A. Public Health recorded the highest number of new COVID-19 cases (7,593) and hospitalizations (2,316) since the pandemic began.
In a statement to ABC7, the department <a href="https://abc7.com/los-angeles-coronavirus-update-la-dining-ban-covid-19/8424699/">said</a>: “Cities can only establish their own health departments with state approval and demonstrated capacity to perform essential public health functions. Given the alarming surge in cases and hospitalizations across every part of the county, we would urge city managers and elected officials to support the necessary public health measures as this is our best effort to stop the surge. At this point, working together is the most sensible path forward.”

New York bar owner Danny Presti was arrested on Tuesday for &#8220;criminal trespassing&#8221; at his own establishment after he refused to comply with arbitrary lockdown orders from Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Cuomo has declared Mac’s Public House to be in a so-called &#8220;orange zone,&#8221; thus mandating Presti and co-owner Keith McAlarney to close down their tavern, notably without compensation.
According to <a href="https://www.silive.com/entertainment/2020/12/macs-public-house-stands-down-police-while-restaurant-owners-protest.html">reporting</a> from Irene Spezzamonte, the business owners were serving food and beverages, but they weren&#8217;t charging patrons any money. Apparently, this did not sufficiently skirt the rules of Cuomo&#8217;s order: &#8220;Although it was given away for free to patrons, the law does not permit service during the pandemic, per Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s mandate,&#8221; Spezzamonte said.
Presti was taken away in handcuffs, and numerous cops stayed outside the tavern to block the entrance. A crowd of supporters quickly formed outside Mac&#8217;s, including State Sen. Andrew J. Lanza.
The Republican representative repeatedly asked the officers on scene why Presti was arrested, noting that the order only states that the business owners must &#8220;cease and desist.&#8221;
“This order simply says that they need to cease and desist,” Lanza told the officers, <a href="https://www.silive.com/entertainment/2020/12/macs-public-house-stands-down-police-while-restaurant-owners-protest.html">reported</a> Spezzamonte. “Nowhere here is there an arrest warrant, nowhere here is anything about arresting anyone on their private property. So I’ll ask, [and] you don’t have to answer … why was he arrested? I was told you would tell me why he was arrested and now I’m asking for that answer.”

Lou Gelormino, an attorney for Presti, told the crowd of supporters that his client is &#8220;on his way to the Sheriff’s Office right now, where, they assured me … they’re gonna issue him a desk-appearance ticket and release him, for criminal trespass because he wouldn’t leave his own establishment.”
“From what I understand, [Presti&#8217;s] arrested because he didn’t want to leave [his business], and at that point … they considered it trespassing,’&#8217; Gelormino said. “I’d like to know why his attorney got three summonses for just being there and being peaceful and respectful and calm, and every one of these officers can attest to that.”
Gelormino was inside Mac&#8217;s when officers handed out summonses, reported Spezzamonte. The attorney said he received a summons himself for $5,000; he was apparently &#8220;deemed an employee of the business&#8221; when sheriffs were on scene.
“We urge our friends in the restaurant industry to be as resilient as possible while we appeal this decision,” stressed Mark Fonte, another attorney representing the business.
“These sheriff’s officers are ‘wannabe’ cops,” Fonte said. “This is what happens when little people get a little power. Each one of them will have to answer to a federal judge. The issuing of summonses to an attorney for representing his client will not be dealt with lightly. I would advise the issuing sheriff to lawyer up immediately.&#8221;

The Democratic mayor of Austin, Texas, encouraged city residents to stay at home when possible and avoid letting their guard down amidst the pandemic in a video message that he recorded while on vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
According to <a href="https://www.kvue.com/article/news/investigations/defenders/austin-mayor-steve-adler-coronavirus-covid-19-daughter-wedding-vacation/269-d76bf9b8-54bb-4736-9b00-80fdf2953145">KVUE</a>, Mayor Steve Adler traveled to Mexico on a private jet with seven other people in early November after attending his daughter’s wedding two days earlier. While the wedding was outdoors, 20 people attended the ceremony at a time when the city suggested people not gather with more than 10 others at a time, even for low-risk individuals, reports the news agency. 
That said, Adler didn’t break any of the city’s orders or Governor Greg Abbott’s coronavirus orders.
During the pre-recorded video message, however, the Austin mayor called attention to the rise in coronavirus cases, saying that “everybody has to be aware of that and we need to stay home if you can. Do everything you can to try and keep the numbers down.”
“This is not the time to relax,” said Adler, who warned of potential closures.
The <a href="https://www.statesman.com/news/20201202/austin-mayor-stressed-residents-lsquoneed-to-stay-homersquo-he-was-vacationing-in-cabo-at-time">Statesman</a> reports that Adler’s travel party formed a “COVID pod,” in which they all agreed to the same safety measures. The Austin mayor also told the news agency that everyone at his daughter’s wedding testing negative for coronavirus on a rapid test, and that he never told people to avoid traveling ahead of his own trip.
“There was no recommendation for people not to travel during that period of time,” said Adler. “Someone could look at me and say, ‘He traveled.’ But what they could not say is that I traveled at a time when I was telling other people not to travel.”
The day after Adler left for his trip, Dr. Mark Escott, interim health director, told the public to start decreasing “those travels outside of your home that are not necessary.”
The Austin mayor’s office told KVUE in a statement:

Only at our most trying moments, like around Thanksgiving, have I asked people not to travel as part of extra precautions. Several weeks ago, when my daughter cancelled her planned wedding to replace it with a COVID appropriate more private ceremony and when my family traveled, we consulted with health authorities and worked hard to model the kind of behavior I’ve asked of the community. We were in a lower risk “Yellow” level than now. It is always safest to stay home. However, we aren’t asking people never to venture out. We ask everyone to be as safe as possible in what they do. My family and I are no exception and we’ll continue to do as I ask of our community. During Thanksgiving and as anticipated for Christmas and the New Year, we should all be especially mindful.</blockquote>
After issuing his first statement, Adler issued a subsequent statement saying that he regretted his travel: &#8220;I wouldn&#8217;t travel now, didn&#8217;t over Thanksgiving, and won&#8217;t over Christmas. But my fear is that this travel, even having happened during a safer period, could be used as some justification for risky behavior. In hindsight, and even though it violated no order, it set a bad example for which I apologize.&#8221;

The U.K. approved the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use on Wednesday, becoming the first country in the West to approve a COVID-19 vaccine for the general public.

This authorization is a goal we have been working toward since we first declared that science will win, and we applaud the MHRA for their ability to conduct a careful assessment and take timely action to help protect the people of the U.K.,” <a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20201201006304/en/Pfizer-and-BioNTech-Achieve-First-Authorization-in-the-World-for-a-Vaccine-to-Combat-COVID-19">said</a> Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla. “As we anticipate further authorizations and approvals, we are focused on moving with the same level of urgency to safely supply a high-quality vaccine around the world. With thousands of people becoming infected, every day matters in the collective race to end this devastating pandemic.”
The vaccine was co-developed by Pfizer, an American pharmaceutical company, and BioNTech, a biotech company based in Germany. Pfizer previously <a href="https://www.pfizer.com/news/press-release/press-release-detail/pfizer-and-biontech-conclude-phase-3-study-covid-19-vaccine">said</a> its vaccine is 95% effective against COVID-19, and also has 94% effectiveness with adults over age 65.

The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/britain-pfizer-coronavirus-vaccine/2020/12/02/90f7276e-3470-11eb-9699-00d311f13d2d_story.html">reports</a> that Britain previously ordered 40 million doses of the vaccine — which requires two doses per person — and government officials say they will have several million doses by the end of 2020. The U.S., on the other hand, has pre-purchased 100 million, and has an option to buy another 500 million doses. 
According to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/pfizer-emergency-use-covid-19-vaccine-177b3ba382517392911c029ecbe74daa">Associated Press</a>, Pfizer expects to produce 50 million doses of vaccine before the end of the year and roughly half of those have been earmarked for the U.S. 
The FDA is currently reviewing an emergency authorization application for the Pfizer vaccine, and is expected to make its decision shortly after December 10, 2020. Regulators say the U.S. review process takes longer because the FDA analyzes and validates raw data for the vaccine trials, whereas in Britain, regulators rely on Pfizer’s analysis of its own data to a greater degree than in the U.S., reports t<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/02/world/europe/pfizer-coronavirus-vaccine-approved-uk.html?action=click&amp;module=Top%20Stories&amp;pgtype=Homepage">he New York Times</a>.

A New Mexico city council voted to disregard Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s coronavirus lockdown measures and reopen businesses and schools.
The Roswell City Council held an emergency session on Monday evening over the governor’s lockdown regulations, many of which have remained in place since the outbreak of the coronavirus in the United States in March. The council had voted in July not to enforce the governor’s orders, leaving all enforcement actions up to the state police.
During the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYbZMaoXR4g">meeting</a>, Councilman Jacob Roebuck introduced a motion for the city manager to restart schools and return the city government to normal operations. The resolution also says the city manager should seek permission from the city council before shutting down any city service or building for more than 48 hours, according to <a href="https://www.koat.com/article/roswell-city-council-votes-to-open-city-facilities-return-to-normal-operations/34828567">KOAT</a>.
“Now, COVID-19 is a highly contagious virus that is widespread and can be fatal to those with compromised health and the elderly,” Roebuck said in his opening comments arguing for the resolution. “To help stop the spread of this highly-contagious virus, the governor of the state of New Mexico has implemented a series of lockdowns and other restrictions.”
“The negative side of these lockdowns has been a financial impact especially brutal on the poor, … a negative [educational] impact on children, an increase of depression and suicide, an increase of domestic violence, an increase in drug and alcohol abuse, and a decrease in preventative care, including vaccines special to children, and health screenings, especially cancer,” Roebuck said.
“There’s no evidence that we can snuff out the virus with shutdowns,” he added.
The resolution passed the council in a 5-4 vote. Grisham’s office responded to the council meeting in a statement on Tuesday, slamming the Roswell City Council not for the vote to disregard her lockdown restrictions, but for holding the council meeting at all while Chaves County, where Roswell is located, is under a public health order.
“Roswell is one of the worst COVID-19 hotspots in the entire country right now – not just the state of New Mexico,” Grisham press secretary Nora Sackett said in a statement to <a href="https://www.koat.com/article/governors-office-calls-foul-on-roswell-city-council-meeting/34840225">KOAT</a>. “Holding such an event with little regard for public health, especially when it could be held virtually, is deeply disappointing and risked worsening a dire public health situation.”
Officials in southeastern New Mexico have put up a resistance to Grisham’s heavy-handed health mandates for months. Law enforcement, city, and county officials have all expressed displeasure with Grisham’s mandates and at times refused to abide by them. In July, New Mexico Attorney General <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/sheriff-remains-defiant-after-new-mexico-governor-sues-to-enforce-coronavirus-lockdown">Hector Balderas</a> filed a lawsuit against the Lea County Sheriff’s Office and Lea County Sheriff Corey Helton. Lea County borders Chavez to the east.
In May, Lea County Manager <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-mexico-county-businesses-can-open-but-please-no-snitching">Mike Gallagher</a> said in a video posted on Facebook that local officials would not penalize individuals or businesses for violating Grisham’s restrictions. He warned that state police may still ticket violators, however.
“Several people have asked me when will Lea County open up for business? My answer is businesses will open when a business owner decides to open. It has always been the decision of a business owner to close or to open. The county will not stand in their way,” Gallagher said.
“The New Mexico State Police have been enforcing the public health orders. Lea County has five cities, more than 4,400 square miles, and about 71,000 people. I am unaware of how many state police officers there currently are in Lea County,” he added. “I have not seen any today. I do know that the state police cannot be everywhere at the same time.”

Playwright, screenwriter, and director David Mamet has called out the &#8220;experts&#8221; pushing the COVID-19 lockdowns, destroying businesses and countless lives in the process.
In an <a class="x5l" href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/when-the-experts-fail-everyone-else-pays-the-price-11606519279" target="_blank" rel="noopener external noreferrer">op-ed</a> for The Wall Street Journal, the &#8220;House of Games&#8221; director called the government lockdowns a &#8220;virus&#8221; that will kill the &#8220;host organism&#8221; if left untreated.
“The virus here is government — or at least the incompetents who advise our rulers and cannot admit the legitimacy of dissension. Absent intervention, this virus may eventually kill the host organism,” Mamet wrote.
While Mamet had grace for officials who make mistakes, he emphasized that such mistakes never get corrected or acknowledged when proven to be so damaging.
“We all have to trust others for their expertise, and we all make mistakes. The horror of a command economy is not that officials will make mistakes, but that those mistakes will never be acknowledged or corrected,&#8221; he wrote.
The playwright noted that experts have issued contradictory messages about the effectiveness of masks, citing the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine that published an article saying masks are useless outside health care facilities, only to issue a quasi-retraction.
He also cited the example of a friend who owns a restaurant and is going broke. “One is ‘permitted’ to sit at his tables and eat without a mask. Indeed, how would one eat while wearing one? Does the virus know that one is sitting down?”
After citing numerous examples throughout history of &#8220;experts&#8221; who made costly mistakes and never paid the price – including Stalin&#8217;s science adviser Trofim Lysenko, whose idea of growing winter crops contributed to mass starvation in Soviet Russia – Mamet then took a jab at those pushing climate change.
“Now we have climate change and its attendant alarmists. The news media, backed by those parts of the ‘scientific community’ the media chose to honor, presented this analysis as though it were indisputable fact. In fact, it was riddled with problems,&#8221; noted Mamet.
Mamet concluded by lamenting how government officials allowed the pandemic to devastate the American economy, putting millions of people out of work, forcing them to &#8220;cover their faces, and walk down the streets in fear of their neighbors.&#8221;

A hospital in Salem, Oregon, suspended one of its nurses after people complained about a video she had posted online in which she claimed to still travel, forgo masks, and allow her children to play with others.
Salem Health posted a message on its Facebook page on Saturday announcing that it had placed the nurse on leave. The hospital took action against the nurse after a number of people complained that she was violating social distancing guidelines. The hospital’s Saturday <a href="https://www.facebook.com/salemhealth/posts/10160371964957926">post</a> said:
<blockquote>Yesterday, a nurse employed with Salem Health posted a video on social media which displayed cavalier disregard for the seriousness of this pandemic and her indifference towards physical distancing and masking outside of work. This video has prompted an outcry from concerned community members. We want to thank those of you who brought this to our attention and assure you that we are taking this very seriously. This individual does not speak for Salem Health and has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation. 
We also want to assure you that this one careless statement does not reflect the position of Salem Health or the hardworking and dedicated caregivers who work here. 
Salem Health believes we all need to do our part to protect the vulnerable and stop the rapid spread of COVID-19. This includes requiring staff, patients and visitors to follow guidance from the CDC and others about mask wearing and social distancing. The nurse’s video, since deleted, was posted on the platform TikTok and featured a woman in hospital scrubs and a stethoscope with the caption “When my coworkers find out I still travel, don&#8217;t wear a mask when I&#8217;m out and let my kids have play dates,” according to <a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/laurenstrapagiel/salem-nurse-placed-on-leave-for-covid-tiktok">BuzzFeed</a>. The usefulness of wearing masks in public to protect against the coronavirus is under dispute as the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cdc-now-says-wearing-a-mask-does-protect-you-from-covid-19">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</a> (CDC) continues to update its guidance and more information is revealed through scientific studies. On November 8, the CDC updated its guidance on masks to say that though they are primarily used to prevent someone sick from infecting others, they do provide a layer of protection for the wearer.
“Masks also help reduce inhalation of these droplets by the wearer (‘filtration for personal protection’). The community benefit of masking for SARS-CoV-2 control is due to the combination of these effects; individual prevention benefit increases with increasing numbers of people using masks consistently and correctly,” the CDC <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/more/masking-science-sars-cov2.html">website</a> says.
Later in the month, a Danish study called into question the CDC’s guidance. A team of researchers found that masks provide no significant degree of protection for the wearer. As <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nyt-study-finds-that-masks-do-not-protect-wearers">The Daily Wire</a> reports:

A strong focus on eliminating the coronavirus over maintaining a healthy economy has led to nearly one-third of small businesses in New York and New Jersey shutting remaining closed since January.
The New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2020/11/29/nearly-one-third-of-ny-nj-small-businesses-closed-in-2020-report/">reported</a> that Harvard-run database TrackTheRecovery.org showed 27.8% of small businesses in New York haven’t reopened their doors since January. In New Jersey, 31.2% remain closed.
The national average, according to the database, is 29.8%.
“The figures are in line with estimates from the New Jersey Business &amp; Industry Association, which says 28 percent of the Garden State’s small businesses had shut up shop by the end of October, according to the Star Ledger newspaper,” the outlet reported. “And with the region now seeing a resurgence of the virus, business leaders are worried the number could go even higher.”
Eileen Kean, New Jersey state director of the National Federation of Independent Businesses, told the Star Ledger that the situation was “really bad.”
“And without federal dollars coming into New Jersey, the Main Street stores and other establishments are not gonna make it through the winter,” she added.

The Hill <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/527901-almost-one-third-of-small-businesses-in-new-jersey-have-have-closed">reported</a> New Jersey is seeing a new surge in coronavirus cases.
“Over 329,000 cases and nearly 17,000 deaths have been reported. On Nov. 21, New Jersey recorded 4,669 cases, the most it has ever reported in a single day,” the outlet reported.
The surge in cases has led many governors and local leaders to insist on new lockdowns, even as they violate their own orders. The latest example comes from Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, who voted to ban outdoor dining in the county without presenting any evidence that such dining resulted in any outbreaks of the virus. Within hours of her vote, Kuehl was seen dining outdoors at a restaurant in Santa Monica, The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/l-a-democrat-ate-outside-at-restaurant-immediately-after-voting-to-ban-outdoor-dining">reported</a>.
A statement from her office tried to downplay her decision to eat at the restaurant:

NBC Bay Area <a href="https://www.nbcbayarea.com/investigations/san-jose-mayor-ignored-health-protocols-in-joining-parents-others-for-holiday-celebration/2411207/">reported</a> Monday that Democrat San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo appeared to &#8220;have broken health protocols in celebrating Thanksgiving with family members outside of his own household.&#8221;
Reporters from the local affiliate learned that he celebrated Thanksgiving with his elderly parents, which his office later confirmed, with &#8220;an unknown number of other guests.&#8221;
His office did not disclose how many people attended the dinner, how many different households attended, and whether those who attended wore masks.
“This is a private event – not public,” said Jim Reed, Liccardo’s chief of staff. “We are going to redraw the line between what is personal and what is public because that line has become blurred.”

“Keep your holiday gatherings to your immediate household members only,” warned Santa Clara County Health Officer Dr. Sara Cody two weeks before Thanksgiving. “I cannot emphasize enough, gathering with friends and family who are not in your household is not safe.”
Political leaders&#8217; Thanksgiving warnings sparked fierce debate across the country, with some epidemiologists pushing back on the more dire assertions by mayors and governors. As reported by <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/23/health/coronavirus-holiday-gatherings.html">The New York Times</a> last week, epidemiologists, contradicting many claims by political leaders, stated that small gatherings among family and friends are not driving surging cases of COVID-19.
“If people are going to meet up, doing so outdoors is probably the lowest-risk way to do it,” said University of Toronto infectious disease modeler Ashleigh Tuite, as reported by the Times. “Telling people they can’t spend time safely outdoors isn’t a rational approach. People are going to recognize that and push back.”
Liccardo is not the first California politician to come under scrutiny over alleged hypocrisy on COVID-19 restrictions. Amid mounting backlash, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) recently apologized for attending a Nov. 6 dinner party with a dozen or so other people at the French Laundry restaurant in Napa Valley.
&#8220;More than three households were present, a violation of the mandatory guidelines for social gatherings set forth by the California Department of Public Health at the time,&#8221; <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/7-times-california-democrats-were-accused-of-skirting-public-health-guidelines">The Daily Wire</a> reported. &#8220;Newsom said the birthday celebration had taken place outdoors, but images obtained by an investigative reporter in L.A. called that claim into question.&#8221;

A CNN report published on Monday revealed that, according to leaked documents from communist China that were verified by multiple sources, China significantly underreported the number of coronavirus cases and deaths it was experiencing during the early days in the pandemic and failed to disclose a 2,000% surge in influenza cases that sprung up at the same time that the pandemic was starting in a nearby area.
In its report, CNN notes numerous instances of China suppressing the total number of cases that it was reporting, which altered projections by leading experts of how the pandemic would play out. White House Coronavirus Task Force Coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dr-birx-any-lack-of-preparation-due-to-significant-amount-of-missing-data-from-china">noted</a> in March that any lack of preparation by the Trump administration in responding to the pandemic was due to a &#8220;significant amount&#8221; of missing data from China, which made the pandemic look like the 2003 SARS outbreak.
On February 10, &#8220;Chinese authorities reported 2,478 new confirmed cases — raising the total global number to more than 40,000, with fewer than 400 cases occurring outside of mainland China,&#8221; CNN reported. &#8220;In a report marked &#8216;internal document, please keep confidential,&#8217; local health authorities in the province of Hubei, where the virus was first detected, list a total of 5,918 newly detected cases on February 10, more than double the official public number of confirmed cases, breaking down the total into a variety of subcategories.&#8221;
The documents list other examples of numbers that Chinese officials reported on specific days being significantly smaller than what their internal numbers were showing.
The documents also revealed that Chinese officials, because of a variety of reasons, falsely thought that the average time between on &#8220;onset of symptoms to confirmed diagnosis was 23.3 days, which experts have told CNN would have significantly hampered steps to both monitor and combat the disease.&#8221;
CNN noted another key finding that has previously not been reported:
<blockquote>At the same time that the virus is believed to have first emerged, the documents show another health crisis was unfolding: Hubei was dealing with a significant influenza outbreak. It caused cases to rise to 20 times the level recorded the previous year, the documents show, placing enormous levels of additional stress on an already stretched health care system.
The influenza &#8220;epidemic,&#8221; as officials noted in the document, was not only present in Wuhan in December, but was greatest in the neighboring cities of Yichang and Xianning. It remains unclear what impact or connection the influenza spike had on the Covid-19 outbreak. And while there is no suggestion in the documents the two parallel crises are linked, information regarding the magnitude of Hubei&#8217;s influenza spike has still yet to be made public.</blockquote>
CNN claims that they were given the documents by a whistleblower, who requested anonymity, that &#8220;worked inside the Chinese healthcare system, and were a patriot motivated to expose a truth that had been censored, and honor colleagues who had also spoken out.&#8221; CNN does not disclose when they were given the information.
There are some notable issues with CNN&#8217;s report. Despite its own report showing that China concealed the true scale of the pandemic, CNN takes China&#8217;s current reporting of its coronavirus numbers as being accurate. &#8220;Today, China is close to zero local cases and although small-scale outbreaks continue to flare, the virus is mostly contained,&#8221; CNN reports.
The left-wing news network appears to more harshly call into question the credibility of claims made by the United States, the world&#8217;s leading democracy, than it does claims made by the Chinese Communist Party. For example, CNN reports that claims by U.S. officials that the coronavirus may have accidentally leaked out of a lab were made &#8220;without evidence.&#8221;
CNN also claimed that their findings do not support the claim that China intentionally covered up the true extent of the outbreak and cited an expert who claimed that even if China had been transparent it would “not stop the Trump administration” from “downplaying the seriousness of it.”
It&#8217;s important to note top U.S. officials have repeatedly warned about the magnitude of China&#8217;s global influence abilities and their long history of deception. A possibility exists that the report was leaked in an effort to help control the global narrative of China&#8217;s handling of the pandemic as the communist nation is facing an international investigation for its lies and coverup of the pandemic.
U.S. officials have indicated that they believe that China <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-u-s-intelligence-tells-trump-that-china-intentionally-lied-about-coronavirus-outbreak-report-says">&#8220;intentionally&#8221;</a> underreported their true numbers <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/u-s-official-gives-fox-news-stunning-estimate-on-chinas-real-coronavius-numbers">&#8220;by at least a factor of 50.&#8221;</a> British officials reportedly told Prime Minister Boris Johnson early in the pandemic that China could have underreported their numbers <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/british-scientific-advisers-claim-chinas-outbreak-could-be-15-to-40-times-worse-than-reported-report-says">“by a factor of 15 to 40 times.”</a> The Washington Post reported in April that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/washington-post-evidence-coming-out-of-wuhan-suggests-real-death-toll-over-40000">&#8220;evidence&#8221;</a> coming out of Wuhan suggested that the real death count was over 40,000, which comes as China still claims that it only has a little over 4,600 deaths total nationwide. A conservative estimate in April from the American Enterprise Institute (AEI)—which gave China every benefit of the doubt when coming up with their calculations, and then some—suggested that China severely and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/aei-releases-conservative-estimate-of-chinas-true-outbreak-numbers-its-staggering">“deliberately”</a> underreported their numbers and that China&#8217;s true numbers at the time had to be at least 2.9 million infections with well over 100,000 deaths.

“The default position should be to try as best as possible, within reason, to keep the children in school, to get them back to school,&#8221; Fauci told ABC on Sunday, as reported by <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/527975-rand-paul-says-fauci-owes-parents-and-students-an-apology-over-pandemic-measures">The Hill</a>. &#8220;If you look at the data, the spread among children and from children is not very big at all, not like one would have suspected. So let&#8217;s try to get the kids back. But let&#8217;s try to mitigate the things that maintain and push the kind of community spread we are trying to avoid. And those are the things you know well. The bars, the restaurants &#8230; those are the things that drive the community spread. Not the schools.&#8221;

In late June, Paul confronted Fauci at a hearing in the Senate. The senator cited statistics that he claimed showed “22 countries have reopened their schools and have seen no discernible increases in cases.&#8221;
&#8220;These graphs behind me show no surge when schools open,&#8221; said Paul. &#8220;The red line is where the schools opened. There is data from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands, no spike when schools are opened. Contact tracing studies in China, Iceland, Britain, and the Netherlands failed to find a single case of child to adult infection.&#8221;
“Brown University researchers collected data on daycares that remained open during the pandemic, over 25,000 kids in their study. [They] found that only 0.16% got COVID,” he added. He continued, “Just yesterday, the American Academy of Pediatrics says, ‘We’ve got to get kids back in school. We want them physically present in school.’ They even cite mounting evidence that children are less likely to contract the virus. Ultimately, this all comes down to the fatal conceit that central planners have enough knowledge somehow to tell a nation of 330 million people what they can and can’t do.”
Then he targeted Fauci: &#8220;Dr. Fauci, every day, virtually every day we seem to hear from you things we can’t do. But when you’re asked, can we go back to school, I don’t hear much certitude at all. I hear, well maybe it depends. … All I hear, Dr. Fauci, is we can’t do this, we can’t do that. We can’t play baseball.  … [M]y question to you is can’t you give us a little bit more on schools that we can get back to school, that there’s a great deal of evidence, and that it’s actually good evidence that kids aren’t transmitting this. It’s rare. And that kids are staying healthy and that yes, we can open our schools.&#8221;
Fauci responded, “I feel very strongly we need to do whatever we can to get the children back to school. So I think we are in lock agreement with that.”
In June, Fauci stated on CNBC’s “<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/halftime/">Halftime Report</a>&#8221; that the question of reopening schools in the fall had a “complicated answer,” stating, “It has to be a bit of a — and I don’t mean lengthwise — a bit of a complicated answer, because the United States is a large country … When you’re talking about getting back to a degree of normality and school openings and things like that, it’s always related to the level of activity of the virus.”

&#8220;As COVID-19 spread earlier this year, governments introduced lockdowns in order to prevent a public health emergency from spinning out of control. In the near future, the world may need to resort to lockdowns again—this time to tackle a climate emergency,&#8221; Mazzucato says.
&#8220;Shifting Arctic ice, raging wildfires in western U.S. states and elsewhere, and methane leaks in the North Sea are all warning signs that we are approaching a tipping point on climate change when protecting the future of civilization will require dramatic interventions,&#8221; she continues.
The plan, of course, isn&#8217;t designed just to end the world&#8217;s dependence on fossil fuel but also to curtail the spread of capitalism, and the lockdown itself would extend far beyond what&#8217;s been put into place to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Environmentalists seeking a &#8220;climate lockdown&#8221; propose a ban on everything from driving private vehicles to consuming red meat, even if the science isn&#8217;t settled on whether those efforts make any meaningful impact on climate change.
&#8220;Under a &#8216;climate lockdown,&#8217; governments would limit private-vehicle use, ban consumption of red meat, and impose extreme energy-saving measures, while fossil-fuel companies would have to stop drilling,&#8221; she says. &#8220;To avoid such a scenario, we must overhaul our economic structures and do capitalism differently.&#8221;
In fact, the plan sounds an awful lot like the abortive &#8220;Green New Deal&#8221; authored by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which includes a number of radical changes to the American economy, including a near-complete ban on domestic air travel and, according to an explainer released alongside the Green New Deal bill, an end to cows.
&#8220;Addressing this triple crisis requires reorienting corporate governance, finance, policy, and energy systems toward a green economic transformation. To achieve this, three obstacles must be removed: business that is shareholder-driven instead of stakeholder-driven, finance that is used in inadequate and inappropriate ways, and government that is based on outdated economic thinking and faulty assumptions,&#8221; Mazzucato offers.
Such a lockdown would, of course, create a permanent change, but perhaps not for the environment. <a href="https://fortune.com/2020/09/28/covid-buisnesses-shut-down-closed/">According to Fortune Magazine,</a> the COVID-19 lockdowns have been devastating for businesses. Nearly 100,000 independent establishments that shuttered under lockdown orders will never reopen again, per estimates. In New Jersey alone, <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/527901-almost-one-third-of-small-businesses-in-new-jersey-have-have-closed">The Hill adds</a>, almost one-third of businesses have closed permanently.
Unemployment remains high, and the Biden administration is already promising a nationwide shutdown if the coronavirus pandemic is still raging in January, leaving investors concerned.
