Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is still trying to steal headlines and distract from the failure of Joe Biden by introducing articles of impeachment against Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.
This is nothing but ridiculous and silly grandstanding. There are no grounds for the impeachment of Thomas or Alito. Thomas did not violate any ethics standards of the Supreme Court by hanging out with people who happen to be rich Republicans any more than Democrats on the Supreme Court have violated their ethical standards by hanging out with rich Democrats.
Being on the Supreme Court automatically makes you a member of the economic and philosophical elite in this country. That&#8217;s just the way it works.
The idea that Samuel Alito should also be impeached demonstrates the full-scale insanity of the joke. The Democrats are claiming that a full-on senile president who&#8217;s incapable of forming sentences should remain in the White House, and everyone in the cabinet who knew who he is senile should remain.
But Alito’s wife flew flags the Democrats didn’t like, and they’re trying to construct that into some sort of statement about January 6 so that Alito is impeached.
Ocasio-Cortez knows her act is going nowhere. She doesn’t control the House. But getting a member to introduce articles of impeachment is the simplest thing in the world.
It&#8217;s an attempt to undermine the credibility of the Supreme Court. These same people say Donald Trump is a threat to democracy, yet our institutions are filing articles of impeachment against Thomas and Alito for absolutely nothing. They’re completely fine with the integrity of the Supreme Court as long as the majority is made up by people sympathetic to Democrats.

Yesterday, Ocasio-Cortez put out <a href="https://ocasio-cortez.house.gov/media/press-releases/ocasio-cortez-introduces-articles-impeachment-against-justice-thomas-and" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a statement</a> saying, “The unchecked corruption crisis on the Supreme Court has now spiraled into a Constitutional crisis threatening American democracy writ large. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito’s pattern of refusal to recuse from consequential matters before the court in which they hold widely documented financial and personal entanglements constitutes a grave threat to American rule of law, the integrity of our democracy, and one of the clearest cases for which the tool of impeachment was designed.”
What “unchecked corruption crisis”? Please name the case in which Clarence Thomas was paid for his opinion. Can she? The answer, of course, is no, she cannot.
So what are the impeachment articles against Thomas?
First, “Failure to disclose financial income, gifts and reimbursement, property interests, liabilities, and transactions, among other information.” Yet he did all of the legal disclosures he&#8217;s required to do.
Next, “Refusal to recuse from matters concerning his spouse&#8217;s legal interest in cases before the court.” She is not named in any of the court cases. If my spouse has political interests, why should I have to recuse based on that? I seem to remember being told by Democrats that to even imply that married women don&#8217;t have their own political interests because they&#8217;re married, and so they&#8217;re obviously impacting their husband or vice versa, would be sexist.
Ocasio-Cortez says with regard to Alito, “Refusal to recuse from matters involving his spouse’s financial interest in cases before the court.” Personal bias or prejudice? I&#8217;m sorry. Is the new standard that justices are not supposed to know people or groups? Because that&#8217;s going to be a hard one for Democrats to fulfill.

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/supreme-court" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Supreme Court</a> struck down a federal ban on bump stocks enacted by the Trump administration on Friday. 
The 6-3 ruling was split along ideological lines. Justice <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/clarence-thomas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Clarence Thomas</a> wrote in the majority opinion that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) exceeded its statutory authority when it announced a ban on bump stocks following a 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas. In the ruling, Thomas said that equipping rifles with bump stocks does not turn them into machine guns, meaning they cannot be prohibited under existing law.
“This case asks whether a bump stock — an accessory for a semi-automatic rifle that allows the shooter to rapidly reengage the trigger (and therefore achieve a high rate of fire) — converts the rifle into a ‘machinegun,’” Thomas <a href="https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/23pdf/22-976_e29g.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> in his decision. “We conclude that semiautomatic rifle equipped with a bump stock is not a ‘machinegun’ because it does not fire more than one shot &#8216;by a single function of the trigger.&#8217;”
A <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/supreme-court-agrees-to-take-up-challenge-to-trump-era-bump-stock-ban" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bump stock</a> is a device that can be attached to a semi-automatic firearm. It reduces the length of time between trigger pulls by harnessing the gun’s energy from recoil.
Thomas was joined in his decision by Justices John Roberts, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett, and Samuel Alito, who wrote a concurring opinion. In his concurrence, Alito said it would require new congressional legislation to ban bump stocks. 
“The horrible shooting spree in Las Vegas in 2017 did not change the statutory text or its meaning. That event demonstrated that a semiautomatic rifle with a bump stock can have the same lethal effect as a machinegun,” Alito wrote. “There is a simple remedy for the disparate treatment of bump stocks and machineguns. Congress can amend the law—and perhaps would have done so already if ATF had stuck with its earlier interpretation.”

The three liberals on the court, Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson, all dissented. 
The <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-court/supreme-court-rules-gun-bump-stocks-ban-unlawful-rcna154651" target="_blank" rel="noopener">case came</a> to the high court after gun owner Michael Cargill sued the government to reverse the ban after he turned in two of his bump stocks to the feds. 
As the case made its way through the court system, both the 5th and 6th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against the ban. Biden’s Justice Department defended the rule in court after it was implemented by the Trump administration.

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/supreme-court" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Supreme Court</a> upheld Republican-backed electoral maps in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/south-carolina" target="_blank" rel="noopener">South Carolina</a> in a 6-3 decision on Thursday, arguing that those suing to overturn the maps had not proven they were racially drawn.
A lower United States district court <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/supreme-court-upholds-gop-drawn-voting-map-south-carolina" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previously</a> ruled that maps approved by the Republican-controlled South Carolina legislature were unconstitutional after they were challenged by a chapter of the NAACP and the ACLU. The majority opinion, written by Justice Samuel Alito, said that the district court had ruled wrongly and that the maps could stand.
“When partisanship and race correlate, it naturally follows that a map that has been gerrymandered to achieve a partisan end can look very similar to a racially gerrymandered map,” Alito <a href="https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/23pdf/22-807_3e04.pdf#&amp;_intcmp=fnhpbt3_1,hp1bt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>. “In other words, the plaintiffs failed to meet the high bar for a racial-gerrymandering claim by failing to produce, among other things, an alternative map showing that a rational legislature sincerely driven by its professed partisan goals would have drawn a different map with greater racial balance.”
Alito’s decision was joined by Justices John Roberts, Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barret, and Brett Kavanugh, with Clarence Thomas adding a concurring opinion.
Thomas wrote that the court had no authority to be intervening in disputes over electoral districts.
“In my view, the Court has no power to decide these types of claims,” he wrote in his concurrence. “Drawing political districts is a task for politicians, not federal judges. There are no judicially manageable standards for resolving claims about districting, and, regardless, the Constitution commits those issues exclusively to the political branches.”

The liberal wing of the court, including Justice Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor, and Ketanji Brown Jackson, said they agreed with the lower court in their dissent and said that it was “more than plausible” that South Carolina had done race-based districting.
&#8220;In every way, the majority today stacks the deck against the Challengers. They must lose, the majority says, because the State had a &#8216;possible&#8217; story to tell about not considering race — even if the opposite story was the more credible,” they wrote.
The challenged map was already slated to be used for the 2024 election due to the ongoing court deliberations over the case.

President Joe Biden took direct aim at Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas during a recent interview, referring to him simply as &#8220;the guy who likes to spend a lot of time on yachts.&#8221;
The <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2024/03/11/joe-bidens-last-campaign?_sp=cdddf561-5a6a-4f4b-aade-4aa97c8bce5e.1709578483135" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> was published Monday by The New Yorker, and the comments regarding Thomas came up when Biden was asked about the Court&#8217;s 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson, which overturned the landmark 1973 abortion case Roe v. Wade.
Biden told interviewer Evan Osnos that if he had the chance, his goal was to &#8220;pass Roe v. Wade as the law of the land&#8221; — and that he was reasonably confident that Democrats could attain the necessary Congressional majorities to make that happen.
&#8220;A few more elections like we’ve seen taking place in the states&#8221; might do it, Biden argued. &#8220;You’re seeing the country changing.&#8221;
Biden then pivoted to voice what he claimed were his personal views on abortion, saying, &#8220;I’ve never been supportive of, you know, &#8216;It’s my body, I can do what I want with it.&#8217; But I have been supportive of the notion that this is probably the most rational allocation of responsibility that all the major religions have signed on and debated over the last thousand years.&#8221;
Osnos then asked Biden whether he believed — as some have suggested – that the Court could also roll back decisions regarding &#8220;same sex marriage, the decriminalization of homosexuality, and access to contraception.&#8221;
Biden said that he did not believe there would be a majority on the Court willing to roll back any decisions addressing those issues — but he did believe some on the Court would be in favor of doing so.
&#8220;I think that a couple on the Court would go considerably further &#8230; the guy who likes to spend a lot of time on yachts,&#8221; Biden said.
When Osnos asked, for clarification, &#8220;Thomas?&#8221; the president just smiled.

HBO late-night talk show host John Oliver offered to pay Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas a million dollars per year and give him a loaded tour bus if he retires from the nation&#8217;s highest court.
The leftist comedian, who was <a href="https://twitter.com/Arightside/status/1759898331445096712">accused</a> online of trying to &#8220;bribe&#8221; Thomas, made the offer on Sunday night: &#8220;One million dollars a year for the rest of your life, if you simply agree to leave the Supreme Court immediately and never come back.&#8221;
&#8220;Clarence Thomas is arguably the most consequential justice on the court right now, and he’s never really seemed to like the job. He said, ‘It’s not worth doing for the grief.’ So, what if he can keep the luxury perks he clearly enjoys without having to endure all of that grief,&#8221; Oliver continued. &#8220;If you watch our show, you know jokes aren’t really our thing. This is real. A million dollars a year until you or I die.&#8221;
Oliver said that Thomas deserved a &#8220;break&#8221; from &#8220;the meanness of Washington so you can be surrounded by the regular folks whose lives you made demonstrably worse for decades.&#8221;

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/supreme-court" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Supreme Court</a> Justice <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/clarence-thomas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Clarence Thomas</a> clashed on Thursday with a lawyer who <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/supreme-court-hears-arguments-on-whether-trump-can-remain-on-colorado-ballot" target="_blank" rel="noopener">argued in favor of Colorado removing</a> former President Donald Trump from the primary ballot under Section 3 of the <a href="https://constitution.congress.gov/browse/amendment-14/section-3/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">14th Amendment,</a> an insurrection clause dating back to the Civil War.
Jason Murray, the attorney who appeared on behalf of Colorado voters challenging Trump&#8217;s eligibility over his actions leading up to the U.S. Capitol breach on January 6, 2021, struggled to come up with instances of national candidates being disqualified by states when pressed by the justice.
Thomas asked Murray if he had any &#8220;contemporaneous examples,&#8221; which the justice qualified as being &#8220;shortly after the adoption of the 14th Amendment, where the states disqualified national candidates — not its own candidates.&#8221;

Murray referred to one instance, pertaining to an 1868 <a href="https://www.citizensforethics.org/reports-investigations/crew-reports/past-14th-amendment-disqualifications/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">congressional election</a> in Georgia, and said he thought it was &#8220;not surprising that there are few examples&#8221; because at that time, &#8220;candidates were either write-in or they were party ballots, so the states didn&#8217;t run the ballots in the same way and there wouldn&#8217;t have been a process for determining before an election whether a candidate was qualified unlike the processes that we have now.&#8221;
Thomas countered by saying that during the Reconstruction era, there would still be a &#8220;plethora of Confederates still around&#8221; who might run for state or national offices, suggesting there would be &#8220;a few examples of national candidates being disqualified, if your reading is correct.&#8221;

Murray contended that &#8220;certainly&#8221; there were national candidates &#8220;disqualified by Congress refusing to seat them,&#8221; to which Thomas shot back by reminding the lawyer that they were talking about states disqualifying national candidates.
&#8220;Other than the example I gave, no, but again, your honor, that&#8217;s not surprising because there wouldn&#8217;t have been — states certainly wouldn&#8217;t have the authority to remove a sitting federal officer,&#8221; Murray said.
As the exchange continued, Thomas explored the purpose of Section 3, saying the clause sought to address the concern that &#8220;former Confederate states would continue being bad actors and the effort was to prevent them from doing this.&#8221;
Thomas posited that the thinking behind Section 3 was not &#8220;authorizing the South to disqualify national candidates,&#8221; and yet he surmised that the idea underlies the argument being made by Murray to keep Trump off the ballot. He again pressed Murray for examples.
Murray said historians filed briefs in support of his case making the point that &#8220;the idea of the 14th Amendment was that both states and the federal government would ensure rights and that if states failed to do so, the federal government certainly would also step in.&#8221;
The lawyer went on to repeat that the reason why there are not more examples was because &#8220;elections worked differently&#8221; in the 19th century. &#8220;States have a background power under Article II in the 10th Amendment to run presidential elections,&#8221; Murray said, adding that they did not &#8220;use that power to police ballot access until about the 1890s&#8221; when &#8220;everyone had received amnesty and these issues had become moot.&#8221;

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/supreme-court">Supreme Court</a> unveiled a formal ethics code this week amid <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/key-allegations-against-clarence-thomas-democrats-call-probe-1819296">scrutiny</a> from the media and Congress over concerns that the justices have failed to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/longtime-thomas-friend-hits-back-at-democratic-probe-into-financial-records" target="_blank" rel="noopener">properly disclose gifts</a> and did not recuse themselves in cases in which they might have a conflict of interest.
A <a href="https://www.supremecourt.gov/about/Code-of-Conduct-for-Justices_November_13_2023.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">15-page document</a>, featuring a statement at the top and a &#8220;Code of Conduct&#8221; below, was <a href="https://www.supremecourt.gov/publicinfo/press/pressreleases/pr_11-13-23" target="_blank" rel="noopener">posted</a> to the high court&#8217;s website on Monday. All nine members, led by Chief Justice John Roberts, signed off on adhering to the five &#8220;canon&#8221; rules.
The five canons, many of which included subsections, said a justice &#8220;should uphold the integrity and independence of the judiciary,&#8221; &#8220;should avoid impropriety and the appearance of impropriety in all activities,&#8221; &#8220;should perform the duties of office fairly, impartially, and diligently,&#8221; &#8220;may engage in extrajudicial activities that are consistent with the obligations of the judicial office,&#8221; and &#8220;should refrain from political activity.&#8221;
A &#8220;statement of the Court&#8221; offered a brief explanation for drawing out an ethics code without getting into specific media reports on ethical questions and a lack of transparency that have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/clarence-thomas-cites-safety-concerns-for-private-jet-travel-after-dobbs-leak" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dogged conservative</a> justices, including Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, as well as <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/04/politics/sonia-sotomayor-neil-gorsuch-book-recusal-supreme-court-cases/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">liberal Justice</a> Sonia Sotomayor in recent months while fueling an <a href="https://www.judiciary.senate.gov/press/releases/durbin-announces-judiciary-committee-will-no-longer-vote-to-authorize-subpoena-for-robin-arkley-following-cooperation-in-supreme-court-ethics-investigation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">investigation led by the Democrat-led Senate Judiciary Committee</a>.
&#8220;The undersigned Justices are promulgating this Code of Conduct to set out succinctly and gather in one place the ethics rules and principles that guide the conduct of the Members of the Court,&#8221; the statement said.
&#8220;For the most part these rules and principles are not new: The Court has long had the equivalent of common law ethics rules, that is, a body of rules derived from a variety of sources, including statutory provisions, the code that applies to other members of the federal judiciary, ethics advisory opinions issued by the Judicial Conference Committee on Codes of Conduct, and historic practice,&#8221; the statement added.

Justice Amy Coney Barrett this week called for the Supreme Court to adopt an ethics code, calling it a &#8220;good idea.&#8221;
Barrett made the remark during a University of Minnesota Law School event on Monday.
&#8220;It would be a good idea for us to do it,&#8221; Barrett said during a discussion at the event with Robert Stein, a longtime law professor and the American Bar Association&#8217;s former chief operating officer.
&#8220;Particularly so that we can communicate to the public exactly what it is that we are doing in a clearer way,&#8221; Barrett added.
Barrett noted that her fellow justices broadly support the idea of an ethics code such as the ones lower court judges follow.
&#8220;There is no lack of consensus among the justices,&#8221; she <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-court/amy-coney-barrett-says-supreme-court-ethics-rules-good-idea-rcna120718" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. &#8220;There&#8217;s unanimity among all nine justices that we should and do hold ourselves to the highest ethical standards possible.&#8221;
The Supreme Court is currently the only court in the federal judiciary that does not require its nine justices to adhere to a formal code of ethics. Although they do not have a formal ethics code, justices do follow other rules such as <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2023/08/31/financial-disclosures-clarence-thomas-samuel-alito-scotus-00113595" target="_blank" rel="noopener">filing</a> financial disclosure reports every year.
In April, Justice Clarence Thomas defended traveling with his close friend Harlan Crow, a real estate magnate and billionaire Republican donor, after allegations that he failed to report the trips.

“As friends do, we have joined them on a number of family trips during the more than quarter century we have known them,” Thomas <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/clarence-thomas-shreds-leftist-hit-piece-have-always-sought-to-comply-with-the-disclosure-guidelines" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “Early in my tenure at the Court, I sought guidance from my colleagues and others in the judiciary, and was advised that this sort of personal hospitality from close personal friends, who did not have business before the Court, was not reportable.&#8221;
Justice Sonia Sotomayor has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/liberal-scotus-justice-took-3m-from-book-publisher-didnt-recuse-from-its-cases" target="_blank" rel="noopener">attracted ethics concerns</a> around her literary career. Sotomayor&#8217;s taxpayer-funded court staff have been repeatedly involved in setting up speaking events to <a href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-sotomayor-book-sales-ethics-colleges-b2cb93493f927f995829762cb8338c02" target="_blank" rel="noopener">promote</a> her memoir and children’s books, which have earned the justice at least $3.7 million.
Justice Samuel Alito was also <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/msnbc-contributor-exploits-missing-sub-tragedy-to-wish-death-on-scotus-justice" target="_blank" rel="noopener">accused</a> of not properly reporting a luxury fishing trip he took to Alaska in 2008, during which he reportedly traveled on a private jet with hedge fund billionaire Paul Singer. Alito was also accused of failing to recuse himself from cases involving Singer.
Alito responded to the criticism in June, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/propublica-misleads-its-readers-alito-gifts-disclosure-alaska-singer-23b51eda?ns=prod/accounts-wsj" target="_blank" rel="noopener">saying</a> that he had no obligation to recuse himself from any of the cases in question because he was unaware of Singer&#8217;s connection to any of them. He added that he had only met Singer on a &#8220;handful of occasions,&#8221; and the two only ever engaged in small talk.
At least two other justices have <a href="https://www.axios.com/2023/08/04/kagan-supreme-court-ethics-code" target="_blank" rel="noopener">indicated</a> they <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/09/07/justice-kavanaugh-ethics-supreme-court/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">support</a> implementing an official ethics code as well, Justice Elena Kagan and Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
“I’m hopeful that there will be some concrete steps taken soon on that,” Kavanaugh said last month.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/supreme-court">Supreme Court</a> Justice <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/clarence-thomas">Clarence Thomas</a> reported taking private jet flights in the spring of last year because of security concerns that followed the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/leak-of-scotus-draft-on-roe-v-wade-stuns-nation-this-leak-is-the-gravest-most-unforgivable-sin">leak of a Dobbs draft opinion</a>.
The information appears in a <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/23932793-clarence-thomas-2022-financial-disclosure">financial disclosure</a> for calendar year 2022 that was released on Thursday. It describes the rationale for the method of travel to Dallas in May of that year and states that the trip was paid for by Republican donor Harlan Crow, a longtime friend to Thomas.
&#8220;Because of the increased security risk following the Dobbs opinion leak,&#8221; the report said, &#8220;the May flights were by private plane for official travel as filer’s security detail recommended noncommercial travel whenever possible.&#8221;
The report said the purpose of the reimbursement, which included meals as well as transportation, was for Thomas being a keynote speaker at the American Enterprise Institute&#8217;s Conference at Old Parkland. Also revealed were other trips paid for by Crow in 2022. The report additionally offers details about financial and real estate matters dating back several years to clear up what it said were prior omissions attributed to mistakes or to offer extra information outside a covered period on issues that have <a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/clarence-thomas-harlan-crow-real-estate-scotus">garnered attention in the media</a>.
POLITICO <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/leak-of-scotus-draft-on-roe-v-wade-stuns-nation-this-leak-is-the-gravest-most-unforgivable-sin">obtained and published</a> a draft opinion by Justice Samuel Alito in May 2022 indicating Roe v. Wade would be overturned. More than a month later, on June 24, the Supreme Court released Alito’s majority opinion in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and Planned Parenthood v. Casey cases, which overturned the 1973 Roe decision and returned the issue of abortion to the states.
In delivering remarks at the Heritage Foundation in October, Alito said the leak &#8220;made those of us who were thought to be in the majority in support of overruling Roe and Casey targets for assassination, because it gave people a rational reason to think they could prevent that from happening by killing one of us.&#8221;

Indeed, a man was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/police-id-armed-man-who-said-he-wanted-to-kill-supreme-court-justice-kavanaugh-report">arrested in June of 2022 and charged</a> with allegedly attempting to murder fellow conservative Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. And GOP lawmakers have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/gop-senators-confront-garland-on-protesters-outside-homes-of-supreme-court-justices">pressed</a> Attorney General Merrick Garland on enforcing a federal law against protests outside Supreme Court justices’ homes.
Chief Justice John Roberts tasked the Supreme Court’s marshal, Gail Curley, with investigating the leak. The inquiry <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-supreme-court-releases-final-report-from-investigation-into-who-leaked-dobbs-draft">culminated in a report</a> in January that failed to identify who was responsible.
Thomas and <a href="https://www.scribd.com/document/668317219/Alito-2022-Financial-Disclosure">Alito</a> released their 2022 financial disclosure reports on Thursday after receiving 90-day extensions. They have faced <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/key-allegations-against-clarence-thomas-democrats-call-probe-1819296">growing scrutiny</a> from congressional Democrats over concerns that the justices had failed to properly disclose gifts and paid-for trips, spurred by <a href="https://www.npr.org/2023/06/21/1183456911/justice-alito-propublica-singer">reports from ProPublica</a>. The filings come after the Judicial Conference <a href="https://news.bloomberglaw.com/us-law-week/new-gift-disclosure-rules-extend-to-us-supreme-court-justices">issued a new guidance in March</a> that reinforced personal hospitality disclosure rules.
A statement delivered to reporters by Elliot Berke, an attorney who assisted Thomas, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-08-31/justice-clarence-thomas-discloses-trips-paid-for-by-gop-donor">said</a> the new disclosure report &#8220;answers — and utterly refutes — the charges trumped up in this partisan feeding frenzy.&#8221;

More than 100 of Justice Clarence Thomas&#8217; former clerks banded together to defend their old boss amid continued attacks leveled against him from the political Left, challenging his integrity and independence.
Fox News Digital <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/over-100-former-clerks-justice-thomas-sign-open-letter-defending-his-integrity-independence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> Tuesday on an open letter, signed by 112 of Thomas&#8217; former clerks, that accused his attackers of being party to &#8220;a larger attack on the Court and its legitimacy&#8221; and described the Justice as &#8220;a man of greatest intellect, of greatest faith, and of greatest patriotism.&#8221;
&#8220;As his law clerks, we offer this response. Different paths led us to our year with Justice Thomas, and we have followed different paths since. But along the way, we all saw with our own eyes the same thing: His integrity is unimpeachable,&#8221; the letter began. &#8220;And his independence is unshakable, deeply rooted seven decades ago as that young child who walked through the door of his grandparents’ house for a life forever changed.&#8221;
The letter went on to describe <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/offensive-disgusting-and-false-desantis-staffer-unloads-on-hillary-clinton-over-clarence-thomas-screed" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Thomas&#8217;</a> upbringing and education, how he was changed by life in the segregated South, and how he had been destined for the priesthood before the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. led him to the law instead.
&#8220;He is a man of unwavering principle. He welcomes the lone dissent. He is also a man of great humor and warmth and generosity. Walk the halls, and you’ll hear his laugh. Call, and he answers,&#8221; the letter continued. &#8220;His grandfather’s sayings become our sayings. His chambers become our chambers – a place fueled by unstoppable curiosity and unreturned library books, all to get every case just right.&#8221;

The tone of the letter then turned, addressing recent attacks against Thomas regarding some of his <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/harlan-crow-hits-back-slams-yellow-journalism-and-political-hit-job-on-his-friend-clarence-thomas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">personal friends</a> and gifts he may have received from them.
&#8220;Lately, the stories have questioned his integrity and his ethics for the friends he keeps. They bury the lede. These friends are not parties before him as a Justice of the Court. And these stories are malicious, perpetuating the ugly assumption that the Justice cannot think for himself,&#8221; it continued. &#8220;They are part of a larger attack on the Court and its legitimacy as an institution. The picture they paint of the Court and the man for whom we worked bears no resemblance to reality.&#8221;
