Despite President Trump’s Executive Order 14151 declaring DEI initiatives illegal, wasteful, and discriminatory, and mandating their termination across all government agencies, DEI appears to be a sort of zombie — dead by decree, but animated by cultural and institutional inertia. On the same day — February 4, 2025 — that the so-called “Dismantle DEI” bill was introduced to both the House (H.R. 925) and Senate (S.382), I optimistically fantasized about a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dei-deserves-an-accurate-eulogy">eulogy for DEI</a>. Unfortunately, while some progress has been made, largely at the individual state levels, the leftist leviathan that is DEI remains well-entrenched across a wide swath of our institutions.
As we close out the year, there are no scheduled hearings, markups, or votes on the bill; and <a href="http://www.apple.com">a 2025 survey by Paradigm </a>(via DiversityResources.com) found that over 80% of major companies have either held their DEI budgets steady or increased them, with only 19% reducing them. These numbers are harder to track for universities and non-profits, partly because many schools and organizations have strategically rebranded DEI programs with titles such as “student success,” “inclusive excellence,” and “community equity,” but a report from <a href="https://defendinged.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/DEI-Funds-UNIVERSITY-Diversity-Equity-and-Inclusion-Funds-and-Fundraising_Final.pdf">Defending Education</a> earlier this year showed that DEI funds still exist for schools in at least 44 states, and hundreds of millions of dollars are still being poured into the cause. Non-profits are finding that many <a href="https://diversity.com/post/dei-in-philanthropy-equity-nonprofit-funding-trends">donors are doubling down</a> on DEI efforts, albeit tying funding to more measurable outcomes.
The velocity and volume of DEI spending over the past 15 years is staggering — not merely in millions or billions, but plausibly trillions of dollars. In 2011, Obama kick-started the campaign with <a href="https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/the-press-office/2011/08/18/executive-order-13583-establishing-coordinated-government-wide-initiativ" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Executive Order 13583,</a> which directed the Office of Personnel Management, Office of Management and Budget, and EEOC to develop strategic plans and metrics for DEI across over 50 agencies. It had no specific budget or spending allotments, but it served as the blueprint for such programs across non-governmental institutions, as well as corporations, universities, and non-profits. President Joe Biden&#8217;s subsequent <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/ending-radical-and-wasteful-government-dei-programs-and-preferencing/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">EO 13985</a> required every federal agency to file an Equity Action Plan.
The Biden administration shifted DEI into overdrive, allocating some <a href="https://www.bizpacreview.com/2025/03/10/biden-admin-went-on-trillion-dollar-spending-spree-embedding-dei-across-govt-study-says-1527980/">$1.1 trillion to 460 programs across 24 agencies</a> based on the FY2025 Equity Action Plan filings. Importantly, all of these dollar amounts exclude indirect costs such as litigation, compliance audits, and opportunity costs from DEI-related mandates.
Universities <a href="https://www.emerging-strategy.com/dei-spending-in-u-s-higher-ed-a-carnegie-classification-analysis/">spend billions of dollars</a> per year on DEI programs, with the University of Michigan alone famously spending some $250 million for one of the more <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/22/magazine/university-of-michigan-dei.html">spectacular DEI failures</a>. <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/top-dei-staff-at-public-universities-pocket-massive-salaries-as-experts-question-motives-of-initiatives">Salaries for the top officers</a> in these departments, which typically range in size from 3 to 25 people, average between $180,000 and $250,000 annually.
In the private sector, JPMorgan Chase committed $30 billion to racial equity and DEI initiatives over just five years (2020-2025). Microsoft invested $150 million in one year alone (2020) to expand its existing racial equity grants and DEI programs. Google previously contributed to over 200 groups dedicated to DEI  and has invested billions of dollars since 2014 in personnel, training, and supplier diversity programs. It is estimated that nationally, annual corporate DEI spending has averaged approximately $10 billion to $20 billion per year (see <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/private-capital/our-insights/discussing-the-state-of-diversity-in-global-private-markets">here</a> and <a href="https://buildremote.co/companies/keeping-dei/">here</a>).
Secretary Hegseth is working to repair the DEI damage in our Department of War, but he has a Herculean task in front of him. A host of veterans and patriots have written and spoken about the tremendous damage that DEI policies have inflicted on our military — eviscerating combat readiness, eroding standards, crippling morale and recruitment, and threatening our national security. The implosion may take a while. The enormous spending led to an unprecedented propaganda campaign, helping to cement deep-seated misconceptions in a large portion of the population. <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/11/19/views-of-dei-have-become-slightly-more-negative-among-us-workers/">Pew Research Center</a> reports that while the American public’s support for DEI has decreased slightly over the last couple of years, the country remains roughly split on whether it is a positive or negative influence. About half still view DEI as being about fairness and opportunity.
In a recent viral video, comedian Adam Carolla discusses the best way for the current administration to combat the anti-ICE protesters as it pursues illegal immigrants across the country. He wryly recommends that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement be retitled as something like National Immigration and Customs Enforcement — thus adding the letter “N” to the current ICE acronym, making it “NICE.” He goes on to make several jokes about how difficult it would be for anyone, including the media and Democrats, to attack NICE people.
In all seriousness, Carolla has identified the brilliant but insidious invulnerability of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and why it is so difficult to drive a stake through its heart (to mix zombie and vampire metaphors). Who could possibly argue with the promotion of such congenial-sounding words? Of course, the words are not the issue. Rather, it is the programs and policies that are implemented under their banner.
<a href="https://www.city-journal.org/article/how-dei-corrupts-americas-universities">Christopher Rufo</a> observed that, in practice, the policies bearing these labels usually promote precisely the opposite of what the words would imply. Diversity almost always involves implicit and explicit racial discrimination, excluding or limiting some groups by their skin color or identity. This is how you get things like segregated dorms and graduation ceremonies (“affinity celebrations”). Equity involves disparate and often unfair treatment of various identity groups (typically based on race, color, gender, and sex) in an attempt to equalize not opportunities, but outcomes. This is what produces outcomes like the elimination of standardized test scores to ensure that underqualified candidates are still considered. Inclusion usually restricts ideas and people who oppose the prevailing doctrine of the oppressed and oppressors. This is how you end up with things like conservatives being blocked from employment consideration or targeted for special IRS consideration. Perhaps most importantly, as well argued by <a href="https://www.hoover.org/research/new-clerisy-how-thomas-sowell-predicted-rise-and-ruin-dei-bureaucracies">Thomas Sowell</a> and <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Woke-Racism-Religion-Betrayed-America/dp/0593423062">John McWhorter</a>, these programs ultimately harm more than help the very groups they claim to champion.
I <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cigarettes-dei-and-our-military">previously identified</a> commonalities between the propaganda campaigns for cigarette smoking and DEI. Sadly, thanks to billions of dollars of marketing — akin to views of cigarette smoking in the past — many, if not most, Americans are blind to the real impact of DEI, and that it is part of the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-state-of-our-political-divide?author=Greg+Salsbury&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=0&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=The+State+Of+Our+Political+Divide" target="_blank" rel="noopener">new Marxism.</a>
The challenge lies in how to open their eyes. Which message resonates more: a rigorously documented essay by a scholar like Dr. Hanson, or a 30-second TikTok clip decrying that we “should not be haters,” and that “diversity is our strength” — with music, dance, and millions of likes behind it? Perhaps Adam Carolla could assist with a counter.
Killing off the other half of the DEI zombie will require a three-pronged initiative focusing on education, litigation, and legislation. 
Firstly, we must educate the public by exposing the specific and measurable harms caused by DEI — from the erosion of meritocracy to the suppression of dissent. The more the public hears about the specifics — such as biological men dominating women’s sports competitions — the more they understand and oppose DEI policies.
Secondly, many DEI policies and practices have been and remain illegal — often blatantly violating Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. More plaintiffs must come forward to challenge these violations in court. A few significant settlements or verdicts in such cases could have a massive impact nationally. Additionally, any non-profit organization engaging in ideological enforcement under the guise of DEI should face a review of its 501(c)(3) status and an investigation to determine whether it is violating nondiscrimination laws.
Thirdly, right now, formal opposition to DEI rests solely on President Trump’s recent executive order, which could disappear as quickly as the next presidential election. We must demand that our representatives advance the House and Senate “Dismantle DEI” bills — codifying reform beyond executive fiat.

Woke is on the run.
The cultural scourge has stifled free thought, promoted hard Left extremism and corrupted the arts. Now, the pendulum is finally starting to swing in the opposite direction.

Woke may have been destined to crash and burn on its own. It’s antithetical to the American spirit and goes against basic biology. Plus, it’s often meted out in a cruel, hypocritical two-tier fashion.
Hunter Biden <a href="https://nypost.com/2021/06/08/hunter-biden-repeatedly-called-his-white-lawyer-the-n-word-texts-show/">repeatedly texts</a>  the &#8220;n-word&#8221; — zero punishment. Morgan Wallen calls a white friend the “n-word” in a private moment caught on tape – his career implodes overnight. 
Yet, over the past decade we&#8217;ve witnessed a number of brave souls stand up to the woke onslaught. While there are many on team sanity who deserve a shout out — including the voices at The Daily Wire — here are seven culture warriors who hastened woke’s demise and deserve a curtain call.
<h3>Robby Starbuck</h3>

The filmmaker/activist became the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/exclusive-robby-starbuck-joins-heritage-foundation-to-continue-fight-against-woke-corporations?author=Spencer+Lindquist&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=EXCLUSIVE%3A+Robby+Starbuck+Joins+Heritage+Foundation+To+Continue+Fight+Against+Woke+Corporations">one person</a> woke companies fear more than anyone else. Starbuck’s crusade to expose corporate shenanigans, like excessive DEI policies, proved shockingly effective in recent years.
Just ask <a href="https://www.axios.com/2024/11/27/robby-starbuck-influencer-dei-walmart">Walmart, Target, John Deere, Harley Davidson</a> and more.
A single social media post from Starbuck could send company executives into damage control mode. Sunlight remains the best disinfectant.
Starbuck brings the receipts, too. His recent <a href="https://x.com/robbystarbuck/status/1958868634287161604">exposé on Cracker Barrel</a>, coming on the heels of the brand’s calamitous logo “update,” proved he isn’t done spotlighting woke on steroids.
<h3>Jennifer Sey</h3>

The former gymnast defied her woke overlords at Levi’s and lost, if only on the surface. Sey left her job as Global Brand President after speaking out against pandemic school closures. The woke company demanded she toe the line and not share her opinion publicly. She refused.
She could have licked her wounds or stayed silent. Not Sey. The Colorado resident rolled up her sleeves and kept fighting. She assembled a team to create a documentary detailing just how punishing lockdowns proved for millions of kids, even as we weren’t always allowed to admit it aloud. That upcoming documentary, “Generation-Covid,” is just part of her anti-woke agenda.
She also created XX-XY Athletics, a clothing brand designed for women, not biological men living as women. Her company speaks out against trans women in women’s sports, helping strike a blow against a movement that often shames citizens into silence.
Now, the tide is turning on the subject, with more Americans allowed to speak their minds. Sey helped make that happen.
<h3>Elon Musk</h3>

He may be “frenemies” with a certain world leader these days, but Musk struck a mighty blow against woke by buying Twitter. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-bought-twitter-over-free-speech-concerns-media-groupthink-2022-12">Partly inspired</a> by the platform’s attack on The Babylon Bee and other free speech punishments, Musk took over and restored many censored accounts. His new, streamlined X let free speech reign anew. Suddenly, users didn’t have to self-censor for fear their unwoke opinions could cost them their digital voice.
The platform is far from perfect, but under Musk’s control, it’s a vastly superior product and a woke-free zone.

Starbuck may be corporate America’s worst nightmare, but Rufo offers a similar service for academics gone wild. Rufo’s relentless pressure campaigns, and fact-based measures, proved highly effective in recent years.
Rufo helped expose former Harvard President Claudine Gay’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/claudine-gay-who-resigned-due-to-plagiarism-allegations-to-teach-reading-and-research-class-at-harvard-in-fall">plagiarism scandal</a>, but that’s just a fraction of his recent activism. Here, he describes why he <a href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/conservative-activist-christopher-rufo-on-his-push-to-scrutinize-higher-education">focuses his attention</a> on Ivy League institutions.
“They&#8217;re promoting from their central administrations racial discrimination, scapegoating and even segregation.”
In some cases, they “were” promoting all of the above. Rufo gets results.

Many celebrities, even the biggest stars in the galaxy, stand down under intense woke pressure. Remember how <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2020/07/rub-and-tug-tv-show-our-lady-j?srsltid=AfmBOooqto0TGS1QBSZKn_jSJCQPHkCoAhh3bv_wnxbTxhD4YsIThjEW">Scarlett Johansson buckled</a> rather than accept a role playing a trans character?
Not Rowling. The “Harry Potter” author, an old-school progressive, began <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/j-k-rowling-hilariously-shreds-transgender-activist-over-bra-fitting-boast">questioning</a> elements of the trans agenda in 2020. That put her squarely in the Left’s cross-hairs, and she’s remained there ever since.
Death threats. Endless cultural cancelations. Serial attacks from the same Legacy Media outlets that once praised her ability to inspire young readers.
And Rowling refused to back down. That posture, combined with the work Sey has done on trans matters, allowed others to speak out against biological men in women’s sports.

The president’s frank talk, blustery persona and eagerness to speak sans filter did more than burnish his brand. He gave us permission to do the same, to shoot straight and take the consequences.

Woke is far from gone, despite the work of these culture warriors. Some companies and schools are using sleight-of-hand techniques to keep on discriminating on the basis of race and gender.

Hollywood will keep making movies about five-foot-nothing women beating up men double their size. Gender and race-swapped stories won’t fade to black like 3D movies and found footage shockers.

A Columbia University professor who participated in pro-Hamas protests has been connected to more than $100 million in grants while she has promoted the idea that brain disease can be catalyzed by racism.
Columbia neuropsychologist Jennifer J. Manly “stood in a human blockade intending to prevent administrators from dismantling the unauthorized encampments last April,” City Journal’s Christopher Rufo and Hannah Grossman <a href="https://www.city-journal.org/article/columbia-professor-hamas-protest-grants-research">note</a>, adding, “According to the <a href="https://reporter.nih.gov/search/zcvQRKaEW0WDLNxgjsBwVg/projects" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Institutes of Health</a> and other publicly <a href="https://grantome.com/search?q=@author%20%20Jennifer%20Manly" target="_blank" rel="noopener">accessible</a> databases, she has been named in connection with over $100 million in grants over the past 20 years.”
Rufo and Grossman point out that in an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kG8pK6XJqM" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> last year, Manly declared that “we shouldn’t blame people for their lifestyle choices in terms of their brain health,” blaming “systems of oppression” and “discriminatory beliefs” to cause an inordinate percentage of dementia among black people. “Any biological differences are driven by &#8230; racism,” Manly stated, adding that racism is “the pathway through which race is ‘biologized.’”
“One paper Manly coauthored <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26412671" target="_blank" rel="noopener">blamed</a> ‘historical patterns of segregation’ for higher rates of dementia among blacks. Another <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39692214" target="_blank" rel="noopener">paper</a> blamed ‘structural sexism’ for declining memory, with the effect found to be stronger among black women,” Rufo and Grossman report.
The National Institutes of Health granted Manly and her colleagues roughly $700,000 to examine how racism and brain disease are connected, prompting a <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39616788/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">paper</a> titled “The impact of historical lynchings on biological and cognitive health for older adults racialized as Black.”
The paper’s abstract stated, “This study examines the association between state-level exposure to historical lynchings (adverse childhood racism for modern older adults), with C-reactive protein (CRP, a marker of systemic inflammation), and global cognitive performance (modified TICS).”
Another <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38665381/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">paper</a>, titled “Impact of Structural Socioeconomic Racism and Resilience on Cognitive Change Over Time for Persons Racialized as Black,” stated in its abstract, “These findings reveal the impact of racist U.S. policies enacted in the past that influence cognitive health over time and dementia risk later in life.”
The medical director of Do No Harm, psychiatrist Kurt Miceli, called Manly&#8217;s linking lynchings with black dementia rates “political,” not scientific. “He goes on to explain that the marker Manly uses to track her hypothesis of racism-invoked stress—CRP—can rapidly change and is more influenced by health factors such as obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, and high blood pressure,” Rufo and Grossman write, adding, “Manly continues to <a href="https://edshareproject.org/about/people" target="_blank" rel="noopener">help lead</a> a <a href="https://www.usaspending.gov/search?hash=f0004c4dc92174ad68fbe554a390b0eb" target="_blank" rel="noopener">multimillion-dollar</a> government <a href="https://edshareproject.org/about/history" target="_blank" rel="noopener">project</a> funded by numerous agencies that tracks brain aging. She also currently maintains more than $20 million in active grants to support <a href="https://www.neurology.columbia.edu/profile/jennifer-j-manly-phd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">her research</a> at the Gertrude H. Sergievsky Center and the Taub Institute at Columbia.”

Journalist and activist Christopher Rufo will join Daily Wire editor emeritus Ben Shapiro Friday to release exclusive footage documenting the left-wing ideological capture of the Department of Education.

“I’m sitting on a trove of insane videos, slides, and documents from the Department of Education. The whole department functions like a Ponzi scheme for left-wing ideologies,&#8221; Rufo <a href="https://x.com/realchrisrufo/status/1889802303244476595">remarked</a>, adding that he was waiting for the moment of “maximum impact.”
President Donald Trump is reportedly <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/white-house-preparing-executive-order-abolish-department-education-rcna190205">preparing</a> an executive order to shut down the Department of Education. Trump stated that he’d close the department during his campaign, saying in one <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojRde4zCYd0">video</a>, &#8220;One other thing I’ll be doing very early in the administration is closing up the Department of Education in Washington, D.C., and sending all education and education work and needs back to the states.”
Rufo has begun releasing internal documents from the department, indicating that the executive agency has been captured by left-wing ideologues who’ve used the government to push gender ideology and critical race theory.
&#8220;The Education Department granted $8 million&#8221; of taxpayer funds to an organization behind a presentation on “Identifying and Disrupting Your Whiteness.” The organization advised over 7,000 school districts across the Midwest as it pushed far-left ideology and demonized the United States as a white supremacist society.

“The term whiteness refers to race privilege, a way of seeing the world, and a set of cultural practices that are usually unmarked and unnamed,” the presenter said. That same organization created a DOE-funded resource claiming that white people do not have “permission to accuse BIPOC of being racist” and arguing that black children must “decolonize the mind” from the effects of whiteness and capitalism.

The executive agency also partnered with “Welcoming Schools,” a left-wing organization that taught elementary school students “there are many ways to be a girl, boy, both, or neither.”

As President Trump’s <a href="https://www.federalregister.gov/presidential-documents/executive-orders/donald-trump/2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">executive orders</a> have mercifully begun dismantling discriminatory and illegal DEI and CRT programs throughout the government and our educational systems, we see a sharp increase in companies and organizations joining the already snowballing trend of <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/conormurray/2025/01/30/war-on-dei-deutsche-bank-stands-firmly-behind-diversity-program-as-these-major-organizations-drop-them/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dumping DEI programs</a>. Perhaps more importantly, because these orders are merely following through with his successful campaign promises, they indicate that Americans themselves finally understand and reject the damage wrought by DEI.
If you needed further evidence that DEI is in its death throes, note how the DEI Industrial Complex defends DEI as they cover its rapid demise, feeling the need to proclaim anew the baseless tropes they used to help launch it originally. <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/dei-diversity-equity-inclusion-corporate-programs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CBS</a>,<a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/trumps-missing-point-dei-meritocracy-experts/story?id=117975699" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> ABC</a>,<a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/what-is-dei-practice-trump-is-trying-dismantle-2025-01-30/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Time</a>,<a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/what-is-dei-practice-trump-is-trying-dismantle-2025-01-30/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Reuters</a>, and others have been including something like a “What is DEI?” section to their latest articles, reasserting that DEI is an extension of civil rights, that it is about helping disadvantaged groups, or telling us that <a href="https://www.science.org/content/article/trump-executive-order-puts-stem-diversity-efforts-hold" target="_blank" rel="noopener">STEM research</a> and underrepresented scientists will suffer if DEI is eradicated.
Reuters offered this typical definition of DEI, “DEI programs have been part of workplace diversity efforts to ensure fairer representation for groups seen as historically marginalized, such as African Americans, LGBTQ+ community members, women, disabled people and other ethnic minorities in the United States.” Fortunately, despite the propaganda push, the DEI fairness mask has come off — and it is hopefully being fitted for a death mask.
<a href="https://starrs.us/dei-how-to-have-the-conversation/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The hypocrisy of DEI</a> begins with the very words represented by that acronym — Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
<a href="https://www.city-journal.org/article/how-dei-corrupts-americas-universities">Christopher Rufo</a> has observed that, in practice, the policies bearing these labels usually promote precisely the opposite of what the words would imply. Diversity almost always involves implicit and explicit racial discrimination excluding or limiting some groups by their skin color or identity. Equity involves disparate and often unfair treatment of various identity groups (typically based on race, color, gender, and sex) in an attempt to equalize not opportunities, but outcomes. And Inclusion usually restricts ideas and people who oppose the prevailing doctrine of oppressed and oppressors.
DEI defenders commonly offer similar excuses as those for other failed attempts at Marxism. You might think that a piece titled <a href="https://hbr.org/2022/12/the-failure-of-the-dei-industrial-complex" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Failure of the DEI Industrial Complex</a> in Harvard Business Review offers a sweeping indictment of DEI in general. Not quite. While admitting its undeniable failures in desired outcomes, it blames its downfall on the “lack of standards, consistency, and accountability among DEI practitioners.” In other words, the argument seems to be that it was a good idea, poorly implemented. Sound familiar?
The litany of slaughters, famines, gulags, and world wars was created by supposedly good ideas poorly implemented. If you start with flawed premises, things like standards, consistency and accountability only enhance the flaws. Such defective thinking includes believing that unequal outcomes are de facto evidence of discrimination; that diversity, not unity of shared values or esprit de corps is our strength; and that privilege and guilt are a function of DNA/skin color. In brief, poor implementation is the wrong epitaph.
As we close the casket, it is important to set the record straight. DEI is being buried today because enough Americans have finally realized that it has little to do with treating people fairly, combatting racism and sexism, helping the underserved, being more tolerant, or leveraging our differences. They now see that it is first and foremost about pitting groups against each other, lowering standards and eliminating meritocracy, and finding and magnifying perpetual grievances to benefit favored identity groups — and their facilitators.
They see that it grew into a <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2023/05/dei-training-initiatives-consultants-companies-skepticism/674237/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">multi-billion dollar self-serving industry</a> that was worse than ineffective; it was actually <a href="https://www.heritage.org/education/commentary/dei-has-failed-we-do-not-need-more-it" target="_blank" rel="noopener">counterproductive</a> — damaging all of those areas it promised to improve — often involving active discrimination and racism.
They see that our military was most profoundly impacted by DEI because, unlike the civilian world, the command structure requires immediate implementation of the destructive policies, that in just a few short years the damage done there was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cigarettes-dei-and-our-military" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nothing short of tragic</a> — lowering standards, morale and combat readiness, and creating the biggest recruiting crisis in half a century.
They see that even in academia, the cradle of DEI, the multi-year, largest and most expensive DEI effort to date ($250m) at the University of Michigan utterly backfired per the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/16/magazine/university-of-michigan-dei.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Times</a>.
They also see that in reality DEI is simple racism — institutionalizing the favoring and disfavoring of certain individuals and groups based solely on their race and/or skin color, gender, or identity group.
Scholar and author <a href="https://starrs.us/the-dei-ruse-is-imploding/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Victor Davis Hanson</a> noted the beginning of DEI’s demise a year ago and rightly predicted, “In the end, DEI will implode because of its many contradictions: it is racist to the core; it is illegal and violates court decisions and the Constitution; it destroys meritocracy; and it is utterly incoherent in adjudicating who and who not deserve racial preferences.”
No, DEI is not dead yet, but it will likely be forced into academic hospice for a while — hopefully never to recover. The correct epitaph for DEI is that it is warmed over Marxism camouflaged as improved sensitivity and fairness. It is not on its death bed because of too much success too fast — too much fairness, too much racial harmony, too much improvement in outcomes of all forms. No, it is dying because, like all Marxism, it aims to foment distrust, chaos, resentment, guilt, hate, discrimination, and ultimately revolution; and most Americans have woken up to and reject that. Like every other attempt at implementation of Marxist principles, it may sound good in theory, but ultimately succumbs to reality.
Like all tyrants, DEI should not rest in peace because it should serve as yet another warning for what can happen even after the failings of countless other attempts at Marxism have been demonstrated. But regardless of how it leaves us, through burial or cremation, let’s get the eulogy right so that future generations may feel less inclined to resurrect its corpse.

Just hours after Christopher Rufo reported that Vice President Kamala Harris had <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/kamala-harris-plagiarized-sections-of-2009-book-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">allegedly plagiarized</a> multiple sections of her 2009 book, &#8220;Smart on Crime,&#8221; Rufo reported that the book&#8217;s publisher had accidentally sent him an email showing it was in &#8220;damage-control mode.&#8221;
&#8220;BREAKING: Kamala Harris&#8217;s publisher, Chronicle Books, is in damage control mode. The company accidentally sent my team an internal communication indicating that VP Lauren Hoffman is requiring that all inquiries about Harris&#8217;s plagiarism go through the higher ups,&#8221; Rufo posted on X.
He included a screenshot of an email — which he said was sent to him by accident — that instructed employees to funnel any questions about the alleged plagiarism through the top brass.
The missive, sent at 3:31 pm PDT Monday, came under the subject line &#8220;publicity.&#8221;

The Associated Press, discussing the resignation of Harvard president Claudine Gay after she was accused of chronic plagiarism, not only accused conservatives of using charges of plagiarism as a “weapon” to target leftists in higher education, but also decided to vilify white Americans, by writing American history from a woke perspective, saying scalping was a gruesome practice &#8220;taken up by white colonists who sought to eradicate Native Americans&#8221; and ignoring that Native Americans were scalping long before the colonists arrived.
AP published an <a href="https://apnews.com/article/harvard-president-plagiarism-claudine-gay-3b048da1f2ee17b5edec3680b5828e8f?utm_campaign=TrueAnthem&amp;utm_medium=AP&amp;utm_source=Twitter">article</a> titled, “Harvard president’s resignation highlights new conservative weapon against colleges: plagiarism,”  reporting that conservative activist Christopher Rufo — who along with Christopher Brunet <a href="https://christopherrufo.com/p/is-claudine-gay-a-plagiarist" target="_blank" rel="noopener">broke the story</a> of Gay’s plagiarism with <a href="https://freebeacon.com/campus/harvard-president-claudine-gay-hit-with-six-new-charges-of-plagiarism/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">later help</a> from Aaron Sibarium— responded to the news of Gay’s resignation by <a href="https://twitter.com/realchrisrufo/status/1742247527523713211" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tweeting</a>, “SCALPED.” “On X, formerly Twitter, he wrote &#8216;SCALPED,&#8217; as if Gay was a trophy of violence, invoking a gruesome practice taken up by white colonists who sought to eradicate Native Americans,” AP wrote.
But as <a href="https://www.americanheritage.com/who-invented-scalping" target="_blank" rel="noopener">American Heritage</a> has pointed out, scalping was practiced by Native Americans long before colonists arrived in America:

The French were not alone in witnessing the Indian custom of scalping. When the English brazenly set themselves down amid the powerful Powhatan Confederacy in Virginia, the Indians used an old tactic to try to quash their audacity. In 1608 Powhatan launched a surprise attack on a village of “neare neighbours and subjects,” killing twenty-four men. When the victors retired from the scene of battle, they brought away “the long haire of the one side of their heades [the other being shaved] with the skinne cased off with shels or reeds.” The prisoners and scalps were then presented to the chief, who hung “the lockes of haire with their skinnes” on a line between two trees.

AP acknowledged, “Gay didn’t directly address the plagiarism accusations in a campus letter announcing her resignation,” but cited her plagiarism as “shortcomings”: “Reviews by conservative activists and then by a Harvard committee did find multiple shortcomings in Gay’s academic citations.”
AP quoted President Irene Mulvey of the American Association of University Professors, saying she feared plagiarism investigations could be “weaponized.” She told AP, “There is a right-wing political attack on higher education right now, which feels like an existential threat to the academic freedom that has made American higher education the envy of the world.”

Embattled Harvard University President Claudine Gay reportedly put together a task force after the death of George Floyd, with its stated goal being to diminish the number of white men who were visible in campus spaces.
Chris Rufo reported on the task force, sharing his article with a post on X: &#8220;Harvard&#8217;s Claudine Gay led a task force to reduce the visual presence of &#8216;white men&#8217; in campus spaces—simply for being white men. They committed no crimes; they were not deemed &#8216;racist.&#8217; Their ancestry and anatomy were enough to justify their banishment.&#8221;

As Rufo stated in the article, Gay responded to the death of George Floyd and the cultural reaction to it by commissioning a task force in order to tackle the &#8220;historical reckoning with racial injustice.&#8221;
Among the recommendations passed down by the task force was a call to change the decor in some university spaces, primarily in &#8220;spaces whose visual culture is dominated by homogenous portraiture of white men.&#8221;
That call was directed specifically toward Annenberg Hall, where apparently all but three of the 23 portraits hung featured white men — and none were women. The task force reportedly did not mention whose portraits were on display there, making it clear that what mattered was &#8220;their race and sex alone&#8221; rather than who they were or anything they had accomplished or done for the university.
Gay has found herself — and particularly her tenure at Harvard — under the microscope in recent weeks following her testimony before Congress, where she struggled to condemn the anti-semitic protests and calls for Jewish genocide that had taken place on her own campus.

&#8220;As members of the Harvard Corporation, we today reaffirm our support for President Gay’s continued leadership of Harvard University,&#8221; eleven of the board&#8217;s twelve members (Gay is the twelfth) said in a statement. &#8220;Our extensive deliberations affirm our confidence that President Gay is the right leader to help our community heal and to address the very serious societal issues we are facing.&#8221;

Journalist Christopher Rufo, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, reported the delegation on Thursday at a time when Harvard and other universities face intense scrutiny over acts of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/anti-semitism" target="_blank" rel="noopener">anti-Semitism</a> reported on campuses around the country as Israel wages war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

As <a href="https://www.campusreform.org/article/harvards-affinity-graduation-page-that-excluded-jews-has-been-deleted/24514" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported by Campus Reform</a>, the URL for the deleted page now redirects to a <a href="https://www.harvard.edu/about/diversity-and-inclusion/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“Diversity and Inclusion”</a> page on the Harvard website, but an <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20230626023641/https://edib.harvard.edu/affinity-graduations" target="_blank" rel="noopener">archived version</a> shows what it looked like before the change. It&#8217;s unclear when the page was removed, but the outlet noted that it appears to have been an &#8220;evergreen&#8221; page for &#8220;affinity&#8221; events in each graduation cycle.
The Internet Archive&#8217;s <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20230323182400/https://edib.harvard.edu/affinity-graduations" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wayback Machine</a> shows the page was visible at least as far back as 2022, and a &#8220;Frequently Asked Questions&#8221; section indicated that the celebrations <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20230626023641/https://edib.harvard.edu/affinity-graduations" target="_blank" rel="noopener">have been going on</a> for several years.

Although Rufo claimed in his X post that &#8220;Whites and Jews were the only groups not provided with celebrations,&#8221; Harvard University <a href="https://gsas.harvard.edu/commencement/affinity-graduation-celebrations" target="_blank" rel="noopener">describes &#8220;affinity celebrations&#8221;</a> as &#8220;student-led, staff-supported events that recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of graduates from marginalized and underrepresented communities.&#8221;
The Daily Wire reached out to Harvard seeking comment on the deleted webpage.

Let me be clear: Calls for violence or genocide against the Jewish community, or any religious or ethnic group are vile, they have no place at Harvard, and those who threaten our Jewish students will be held to account.&#8221;

Notably, Gay is already facing mounting pressure to be removed since her shocking testimony during a Congressional hearing on anti-Semitism in colleges and universities.
“I stand by the integrity of my scholarship,&#8221; Gay <a href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/12/11/metro/harvard-president-testimony/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the Boston Globe, regarding the plagiarism allegations. &#8220;Throughout my career, I have worked to ensure my scholarship adheres to the highest academic standards.”
In addition to other questionable instances, Gay is accused of lifting “nearly verbatim” work from Lawrence Bobo and Franklin Gilliam in their paper called “Race, Sociopolitical Participation, and Black Empowerment.”
Rufo cited Harvard’s own policy on paraphrasing and plagiarism to underscore his point: “When you paraphrase, your task is to distill the source’s ideas in your own words,” the guidelines <a href="https://usingsources.fas.harvard.edu/what-constitutes-plagiarism-0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">state</a>. “It’s not enough to change a few words here and there and leave the rest; instead, you must completely restate the ideas in the passage in your own words. If your own language is too close to the original, then you are plagiarizing, even if you do provide a citation.”

Rufo then cites Harvard&#8217;s own policy on paraphrasing and plagiarism to underscore his point: “When you paraphrase, your task is to distill the source’s ideas in your own words,&#8221; the guidelines <a href="https://usingsources.fas.harvard.edu/what-constitutes-plagiarism-0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">state</a>. &#8220;It’s not enough to change a few words here and there and leave the rest; instead, you must completely restate the ideas in the passage in your own words. Gay is further accused of lifting material from legal scholar Carol Swain without giving a citation. Rufo again cites Harvard guidelines, which state that students &#8220;must give credit to the author of the source material, either by placing the source material in quotation marks and providing a clear citation, or by paraphrasing the source material and providing a clear citation.&#8221;

And lastly, Gay is accused of swiping an entire appendix. &#8220;Gay composes an entire appendix in the dissertation directly taken from Gary King&#8217;s book, &#8216;A Solution to the Ecological Inference Problem,'&#8221; Rufo posted. &#8220;While she cites King’s book later in the appendix—in fact, King was her dissertation advisor—Gay does not explicitly acknowledge that Appendix B is entirely grounded in King’s concepts and language, instead passing it off as her own original work.&#8221;

The plagiarism accusations come as Gay is already under fire for her recent testimony during a Congressional hearing on anti-Semitism in colleges and universities.
When Gay was questioned about whether calling for the genocide of Jews violated Harvard’s codes of conduct, she <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/their-statements-were-abhorrent-backlash-to-harvard-penn-mit-presidents-on-anti-semitism-continues-even-after-they-backtrack" target="_blank" rel="noopener">responded</a> that it depends &#8220;on the context.&#8221; She added that calling for genocide is “at odds with the values of Harvard” and that when that kind of “speech crosses into conduct, that violates our policies.”
