Democratic Senator Chris Coons was taken to a hospital and treated for minor injuries on Sunday following a multi-car crash in Delaware. 
The Lewes Fire Department told <a href="https://www.coasttv.com/news/senator-chris-coons-briefly-hospitalized-after-car-accident-in-lewes/article_4aef992d-91f4-46c4-8212-4154e9d62021.html">CoastTV</a> that the multi-vehicle crash involved six passengers and occurred at the intersection of Savannah Road and Massachusetts Avenue in Lewes, a coastal city where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean.
A driver suffering from an undisclosed “medical incident” caused the crash.

Coons did not specify or elaborate on the nature or extent of the injuries. 
“I’m deeply grateful to the first responders for their prompt and professional response, including the Lewes Police Department, Lewes and Rehoboth Fire Departments, and Sussex County Emergency Medical Services, as well as the capable doctors and nurses at Beebe Hospital, where I received excellent care,” Coons said. 
“I&#8217;m feeling relieved and blessed that by all accounts no one was seriously injured during the crash,” he added. 
First elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010, Coons is considered one of the more moderate and establishment voices of the Democratic Party. He currently serves as the ranking member on a Department of Defense <a href="https://www.congress.gov/member/christopher-coons/C001088/committees">subcommittee</a>.

Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum appeared to lose her patience with Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) during a Wednesday interview on &#8220;The Story,&#8221; calling him out directly for refusing to acknowledge the massive amounts of fraud, waste, and abuse that have been uncovered by the Department Of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
MacCallum asked Coons for his reaction to the numbers that DOGE has been putting out since its inception — particularly with regard to Social Security — and the Delaware Democrat repeatedly attempted to downplay the DOGE team&#8217;s findings and dismiss them as just a &#8220;small percentage&#8221; of the federal government&#8217;s budget.

&#8220;Were you as shocked as I was when you heard some of that — some of those numbers, some of the information about how much fraud is happening in Social Security, Senator?&#8221; MacCallum asked Coons about the DOGE findings thus far.
&#8220;So, Martha, not only do I not believe some of what was just shared there, but the Trump administration&#8217;s acting administrator of Social Security has said that less than one-tenth of one percent of the payments put out by the Social Security administration are fraudulent or in error,&#8221; Coons protested. What he did not mention was the fact that Social Security is projected to pay out some $1.6 trillion in 2025 alone, making even one-tenth of one percent a pretty hefty sum.
Coons then tried to turn the conversation back on billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, saying that he was &#8220;alarmed&#8221; that the DOGE team could potentially have access to information on millions of Americans. &#8220;Elon Musk has made it clear that he thinks Social Security is a Ponzi scheme,&#8221; he said. &#8220;A Ponzi scheme is itself fraudulent, fake, criminal, or illegal. I don&#8217;t think Social Security is a Ponzi scheme. I think 70 million Americans depend on it for their principal source of income.&#8221;
&#8220;Too bad, because in ten years —&#8221; MacCallum referenced the increasing likelihood that Social Security would be insolvent within a decade.
&#8220;Let me ask you a question, Senator. Let me ask you a question. You&#8217;ve made a lot of points, let me ask you a question,&#8221; MacCallum tried to break through as Coons continued his rant. &#8220;You say all those millions of people depend on Social Security, so you don&#8217;t care about the ones that are going to never get it because it&#8217;s going to be insolvent in ten years. What have Democrats done? What did Joe Biden&#8217;s administration do to find the waste, fraud, and abuse in Social Security to try to shore up this important agency? What did they do? Can you tell me?&#8221;
&#8220;Sure,&#8221; Coons agreed. &#8220;Martha, you are presuming widespread waste, fraud, and abuse in Social Security. You haven&#8217;t offered any credible evidence to support that. I don&#8217;t believe what DOGE says about virtually any federal agency.&#8221;
The interview continued in that same tone until MacCallum finally called Coons out directly: &#8220;I don&#8217;t know why you don&#8217;t want to hear it! It&#8217;s like — you can&#8217;t just put your fingers in your ear and go &#8216;blah blah blah,&#8217; like it&#8217;s not happening!&#8221;

Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) was grilled during an interview on Friday for calling on Trump defense officials to resign over their use of a Signal chat group given that he never called for Biden defense officials to resign when they had major screwups.
Coons made the remarks on CNBC&#8217;s &#8220;Squawk Box&#8221; when pressed by co-host Joe Kernen over his calls for Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz to resign while he remained silent during the Biden years with regard to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
&#8220;Did you call for Lloyd Austin&#8217;s resignation?&#8221; Kernen asked. &#8220;Not only did we lose 13 service members, we left $70 billion worth of equipment that fell into the hands of the Taliban. Couple of years later, he was out of pocket for two weeks and didn&#8217;t tell the White House.&#8221;
&#8220;Did you ask for him to resign at this point?&#8221; he pressed. &#8220;Are you actually asking for Hegseth and Waltz to resign when you didn&#8217;t ask for Lloyd Austin?&#8221;
Coons claimed that Austin not do anything that put United States national security at risk by getting health care treatment despite not notifying anyone about his hospitalization and surgery for cancer.
&#8220;What about Afghanistan? What about Afghanistan?&#8221; Kernen pressed. &#8220;Did you guys forget that? Is the statute of limitations is over for 4 years?&#8221;
Coons ignored the question and instead continued to talk about Austin&#8217;s surgery for cancer.
Kernen continued to press Coons about Afghanistan, noting that in the past, he had referred to Biden&#8217;s disastrous withdraw as a success.
&#8220;Afghanistan was not a success,&#8221; Kernen said.
Coons continued to deflect by starting to talk about the Houthis.
&#8220;I am not saying that the attack on the Houthis was not a success,&#8221; Coons said. &#8220;I am saying that he demonstrably violated a directive that was just shared in the Pentagon about don&#8217;t use Signal for classified information, it is not reliably secure. And one of the folks on that group chat was in Russia at the time that that information being &#8212; look, all of us use apps like WhatsApp and Signal.&#8221;
Kernen called out Coons for deflecting: &#8220;You&#8217;re running out the clock on Afghanistan.&#8221;
Coons then proceeded to blame President Donald Trump for Biden&#8217;s disaster, even though he admitted that actions that were taken under Biden&#8217;s leadership were &#8220;badly handled.&#8221;
When asked if he should have called for Austin to resign over the debacle, Coons responded: &#8220;I don&#8217;t know whether Lloyd Austin is the person who should have been held accountable for it, but there should have been accountability.&#8221;

One of former President Joe Biden&#8217;s top allies took some heat on Thursday when he tried to blame President Donald Trump&#8217;s &#8220;attempt to gut foreign aid&#8221; for what he claimed was $300 million worth of medication that was about to expire.
Senator Chris Coons (D-DE), who defended Biden&#8217;s obviously lagging mental acuity right up until he bowed out of the 2024 presidential race, posted a photo on X and claimed that it showed proof that Trump&#8217;s attempts to dial back foreign aid were already putting people at risk.

But as people soon noted, there were problems with his claim. The photo he had shared clearly showed two large stacks of boxes and one smaller box in the foreground. The box in the foreground was not clearly labeled as far as contents — but it did say that the contents had been &#8220;sterilized by gamma radiation,&#8221; which suggests that box contains medical supplies like <a href="https://www.steris-ast.com/techtip/products-commonly-treated-irradiation/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">alcohol swabs or hypodermic needles</a>. According to a clear label on the side, the contents of that box will not expire until 2027.
The larger stack of boxes also had a clear label stating that the boxes in that stack contained the antibiotic Zithromax. In addition to treating a variety of bacterial infections from ear infections and tonsillitis to pneumonia and some STIs, the New England Journal of Medicine <a href="https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1715474" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> in 2018 that when given to children under the age of five, it could have a significant impact on reducing childhood mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. The label on that stack of boxes said that the medication contained there would expire in 2026.

Key Biden Ally Trashed For Trying To Blame Trump For Canceling Aid, Letting Meds Expire

On Wednesday, the GOP-led <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-senate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Senate</a> amended the &#8220;Laken Riley Act,&#8221; a bill that would require federal officials to arrest illegal immigrants charged with crimes in the United States.
Seventy members, including Republicans and Democrats, <a href="https://www.congress.gov/amendment/119th-congress/senate-amendment/14/text" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voted</a> in favor of expanding the legislation&#8217;s list of criminal offenses that would lead to mandatory detention of &#8220;inadmissible aliens.&#8221;
Another 25 senators voted against the amendment from Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), all Democrats and the two independents who caucus with them. Several other members did not vote.
The bill, which got <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-again-passes-laken-riley-act-159-dems-vote-against-it" target="_blank" rel="noopener">approved</a> by the House last week, would direct the secretary of Homeland Security to detain illegal immigrants charged with, convicted of, or who admits to theft-related crimes.
With the amendment included, the list now <a href="https://www.congress.gov/amendment/119th-congress/senate-amendment/14/text" target="_blank" rel="noopener">also mentions</a> &#8220;the assault of a law enforcement officer offense, or any crime that results in death or serious bodily injury to another person.&#8221;
The Senate also <a href="https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_votes/vote1191/vote_119_1_00004.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rejected</a> an amendment from Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) to &#8220;strike&#8221; a section authorizing state attorneys general to sue federal immigration officials for alleged detention violations.
Laken Riley was a 22-year-old Georgia nursing student who was killed last year. A press release from Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA), who <a href="https://collins.house.gov/media/press-releases/rep-mike-collins-reintroduces-laken-riley-act" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reintroduced</a> the Laken Riley Act for the new Congress, said the bill &#8220;directly addresses one of the federal policy failures&#8221; related to the murder.
Ibarra was &#8220;previously cited for shoplifting by the Athens Police Department,&#8221; it said. &#8220;If local law enforcement had called ICE, and ICE issued a detainer and picked him up, Laken would be alive.&#8221;
<a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/senate-bill/5/amendments" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dozens</a> more amendments have been proposed, including <a href="https://x.com/SenatorDurbin/status/1879315360975097974" target="_blank" rel="noopener">two</a> from Judiciary ranking member Dick Durbin (D-IL) that would exempt Dreamers and give them and others a path to citizenship.
But C-SPAN&#8217;s Craig Caplan <a href="https://x.com/CraigCaplan/status/1879683513869312006" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) has filed cloture on the bill, setting up a vote to advance it and limit amendments, with a 60-vote threshold.
Whatever new version of the Laken Riley Act may ultimately pass through the Senate would need another vote by the House before it could be sent to the president to possibly sign the bill into law.

Sens. Young then took a swipe at Biden over the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/president-biden-pardons-hunter-claims-son-was-singled-out" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent pardon</a> of his son Hunter.
&#8220;The President is more enthusiastic about using his office to provide relief to his family members who received due process than he is about giving relief to the millions of regular Americans who are waiting years for their due process,&#8221; Young said. &#8220;Biden’s legacy will be &#8216;pardons for me, no justice for thee.'&#8221;

Coons was participating in the interview from Chicago, where the Democratic National Convention is taking place this week. He predicted Biden would speak &#8220;well&#8221; during his speech on Monday evening.
Fox News anchor John Roberts pressed for clarification — after Coons added that Biden stepping aside was &#8220;his decision&#8221; — on the complaint about the media focusing on the president&#8217;s mental condition.
&#8220;Let me just add one quick question, just to put a button on this: So you&#8217;re saying the reason why he&#8217;s not the nominee anymore is because of the media?&#8221; Roberts asked.
&#8220;I&#8217;m saying that after what was an admittedly a very bad debate performance,&#8221; Coons said, &#8220;he was sick, he had travelled too much, he did not perform well — that he reevaluated his path forward as a candidate.&#8221;
&#8220;Over the next three weeks,&#8221; Coons added, as Biden &#8220;gave interview after interview, speech after speech, rally after rally, the media wouldn&#8217;t let him move on.&#8221;
&#8220;And the polls began to reflect that folks did not have the confidence that he could serve four years as our next president,&#8221; he continued.
&#8220;Ultimately, it was the opinion of the American people and the opinion of those closest to him that mattered. I think he&#8217;s made the right decision,&#8221; Coons said.

Amid calls for him to step down as the Democratic presidential nominee after his disastrous performance in the debate against former President Donald Trump a week ago, President Joe Biden has reportedly been asking allies what he can do to shore up support for him to continue with his re-election bid.
According to <a href="https://www.wsj.com/politics/elections/pressure-on-biden-builds-as-democrats-fear-big-november-losses-a87849f3?mod=hp_lead_pos1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Wall Street Journal</a>, in the two days prior to Independence Day, Biden has contacted numerous allies in Congress to persuade them that he should withdraw from the nomination. Additionally, on Wednesday evening Biden met with roughly two dozen Democratic governors. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said, “We were honest about the feedback that we were getting. We were honest about the concerns that we’re hearing,” adding, “We said we would stand with him.”
On Wednesday, Biden reportedly told his campaign staff, “Let me say this as clearly as I possibly can—and as simply and straightforward as I can. I am running. I’m the nominee of the Democratic Party. No one’s pushing me out. I’m not leaving.”
Yet numerous polls show Trump’s lead over Biden soared to six percentage points in the wake of their debate.
Delaware Democrat Sen. Chris Coons said that when he spoke to Biden on Tuesday, Biden asked him, “How do you rebuild confidence?” Coons said he advised Biden to conduct an unscripted event such as a town hall “where the average American can just see his engagement and agility and capacity.”
“The campaign has come off as extremely arrogant in the way it has responded to legitimate questions about President Biden’s capacity as a candidate. Calling us bed-wetters or Davos Democrats is out of bounds,” Rep. Scott Peters (D-CA) asserted, adding, “This campaign damn well better tell us how they expect to win it—if they don’t tell me that this week, call me back next week.”
A few Democrat House members have called for Biden to step down, including Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas and Rep. Raúl Grijalva of Arizona.
Former Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH), irritated that Biden supporters decided to “dig in and ask everybody to pretend like we didn’t see what we saw,” is pushing the idea of Biden stepping down so he can be replaced by Vice President Kamala Harris. He says, “We have a great candidate. She’s done a phenomenal job. I think she’d be attractive to a lot of working-class people in the middle-class Midwest once they get to know her.”

Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) warned on Friday that U.S. troops could be involved in direct combat with Russia if Congress fails to send additional support to Ukraine. 
Coons, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/02/16/us-troops-may-soon-be-on-the-front-lines-against-russia-sen-coons.html">CNBC</a> while attending the Munich Security Conference that the U.S. must continue funding Ukraine and its European allies to fend off further Russian aggression. He also called on the House to pass the $95 billion foreign aid package, which includes support for Ukraine, that the Senate passed earlier this week. 
“In the next front against Russia, it will be Americans on the front lines,” Coons said, according to CNBC. “We are best off investing in the Ukrainians who are fighting bravely for their own freedom than allowing [Russian President Vladimir] Putin the opportunity to spread further chaos and violence across Europe.”
The Democratic senator added that he fears without the additional funding for Ukraine, Putin will target a NATO country, forcing the U.S. to put troops on the ground in Europe. The senator is “optimistic” that the Republican-led House will approve the bill after “some back and forth.” 
“If we don’t stop Putin in Ukraine, he will next be attacking NATO allies of the United States,” he said. 
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has been vocal about his <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/speaker-johnson-rips-senate-foreign-aid-package-for-lacking-real-border-security-provisions">opposition</a> to the massive foreign aid package, citing the bill’s lack of “real” border security provisions. Last week, Republicans rejected the foreign aid package’s border security provisions, arguing that they did little to address and prevent the ongoing illegal immigration crisis. Johnson said the Senate “did the right thing” in rejecting the “insufficient” border provisions, but added that senators “should have gone back to the drawing board” to change the bill and address the “ongoing catastrophe.”
The $95 billion foreign aid package passed by the Senate includes funding for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, and other foreign priorities. According to some Republican representatives, Johnson <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/02/14/politics/house-republicans-foreign-aid/index.html">told</a> his colleagues that he is not rushing to bring up the bill in the House as some lawmakers are reportedly writing up their own proposals. 
“The Republican-led House will not be jammed or forced into passing a foreign aid bill,” the speaker <a href="https://apnews.com/article/house-speaker-johnson-ukraine-aid-06889e166a5417d5b4bc7795813e37ef">said</a>.

Coons&#8217; warning about American troops being sent to fight Russian forces echoes similar comments made by President Joe Biden about a previous aid package for Ukraine. The elder Biden, in an <a href="https://www.mediaite.com/news/our-audio-was-messed-up-msnbcs-ruhle-had-to-ask-biden-her-hunter-question-twice-in-unaired-interview-cut/">interview with MSNBC</a> that aired in May, spoke highly of his son Hunter despite a years-long criminal investigation.
Biden claimed the inquiry would not affect his presidency because Hunter &#8220;has done nothing wrong.&#8221; The president also said has &#8220;trust&#8221; and &#8220;faith&#8221; in his son.
In the weeks that followed that interview, a plea agreement involving tax evasion and gun charges emerged that could have kept Hunter Biden out of prison. But the agreement — <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/episode/ep-1774-hunter-s-sweetheart-plea-deal-and-the-continuing-biden-coverup3">dubbed a &#8220;sweetheart plea deal&#8221;</a> by Republicans — fell apart under scrutiny by a judge who raised concerns about an immunity clause.
The Department of Justice indicated last week that special counsel David Weiss intends to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-special-counsel-david-weiss-to-indict-hunter-biden-filing-says">seek an indictment</a> against Hunter Biden on gun charges by the end of the month, while the First Son&#8217;s lawyer <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/06/us/politics/hunter-biden-indictment-gun-charges.html">argued</a> in a statement that a pre-trial diversion agreement &#8220;remains valid and prevents any additional charges from being filed.&#8221;
When pressed on Hunter Biden, Coons took the opportunity to mention that former President Donald Trump, who is seeking another term in the White House as the GOP frontrunner, is facing criminal indictments of his own.
&#8220;Hunter Biden is not going to be on the election polls — he is not standing for election next November. Donald Trump likely is, and the four different legal matters where Donald Trump has been charged with 83 counts stand in stark contrast,&#8221; Coons said.
The senator also said President Biden is &#8220;committed to staying out of&#8221; the criminal investigation into his son and insisted Hunter &#8220;is looking forward to resolving this, to moving forward with his life and his recovery&#8221; from drug addiction.

Republican and Democratic officials discussed the future of bipartisan cooperation in the United States during the <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/world-economic-forum" target="_blank" rel="noopener">World Economic Forum</a> in Davos, Switzerland.
The lawmakers spoke during a <a href="https://www.weforum.org/events/world-economic-forum-annual-meeting-2023/sessions/america-un-bound" target="_blank" rel="noopener">panel event</a> centered upon policy priorities in the United States moderated by World Economic Forum President Børge Brende. The Republicans and Democrats, to various degrees, asserted that reaching toward the middle of the aisle is more effective for the country than catering to purported radicals, especially on the Right.
Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) both affirmed that the United States would continue to aid Ukraine until they are victorious over Russia. The latter lawmaker stressed that the Inflation Reduction Act would increase energy security to help European allies facing power supply crunches. “The United States cannot be the greatest economy in the world, we cannot be the superpower of the world, if we do not have energy security,” he commented.
When discussing bipartisan compromise, Governor J.B. Pritzker (D-IL) claimed that there still remains a “pro-Russia” faction of the Republican Party: “I just don’t know where that stuff comes from other than QAnon.” Manchin added that open social media platforms increase partisanship.
Brende asked whether Democrats and Republicans would successfully find a compromise on the nation’s southern border. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) answered by expressing support for increased border security. “The key is to create a system where we get to choose as a nation who we will invite into the country and who we will not. Right now, because our immigration security system is completely broken, we are not choosing who gets to come and who doesn’t. The cartels are choosing,” she said. “And that is not sustainable for our country.”
Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL), who was one of several Republicans to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/here-are-the-republicans-attending-the-world-economic-forum-next-week" target="_blank" rel="noopener">attend</a> the World Economic Forum despite skepticism toward the organization from conservatives, asserted that the United States cannot remain a superpower and support Europe without significant reforms to the immigration system. “I represent the Hispanics, which are the largest minority in the country,” she remarked. “The overwhelming majority of the people who are crossing the border as we speak are Hispanics and Latinos like I am. I believe that people like me in Congress should be the ones telling the rest of the political elite that it’s time for both parties to pay attention to something that for the last 35 years neither party has been able to do.”
Brende asked Governor Brian Kemp (R-GA) to discuss lackluster Republican performance in the most recent midterm elections; he emphasized his decision to run on his economic record. “I think the people of the state that I represent, which is a great one, they want to know the differences between the candidates, but they also want to know what we’re for,” he said.
Kemp likewise voiced his frustration regarding the fentanyl crisis, increased human trafficking, and other effects of lackluster border security. “Secure the dang border,” he exhorted lawmakers on the stage.
