Marina Zenovich, the director of the upcoming documentary “I’m Chevy Chase, and You’re Not,” said she felt relieved when the actor made a snarky remark early in filming.
Zenovich <a href="https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/im-chevy-chase-youre-not-cnn-doc-snl-community-1236618483/">told</a> Variety that she wanted to explore Chase’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/is-chevy-chase-really-that-terrible-either-way-he-doesnt-care">notoriously bad reputation</a> in Hollywood, noting that multiple colleagues have gone on record describing him as mean and hard to work with. She said an early exchange with Chase gave her the opening she was looking for.
At the very beginning of the documentary, Zenovich can be heard off-camera telling Chase, “I’m just trying to figure you out.”
“No sh**. It’s not going to be easy for you,” he replied.
“Why is it not going to be easy?” Zenovich asked.
“You’re not bright enough. How’s that?” Chase said, then smiled.

“I’d never done an interview where someone was so rude to me,” Zenovich told Variety, saying she was relieved he behaved that way. “But I was so worried going into that first interview with him about how I was going to say to him, like, ‘Everyone thinks you’re an a**hole.’ I thought if I did, he would throw me out of his house. So the minute he said that to me, I had a way in.”

“I wanted to figure out who was the real person behind the conflicted, guarded and somewhat fragile man we see on camera,” the director continued. “What was behind the surface of his slightly intimidating superstar bravado? Was there any self-awareness there? Having interviewed Chevy at length, I have to say that yes, it’s all there – and a whole lot of pain and heartache too.”
While many of Chase’s co-stars refused to be interviewed for the documentary, including almost everyone involved in the NBC sitcom “Community,” several shared insights. Zenovich spoke with the actor’s friends and family, as well as celebrities including Mike Ovitz, Dan Aykroyd, Beverly D’Angelo, Goldie Hawn, Lorne Michaels, Ryan Reynolds, and Martin Short.
The documentary airs on CNN on January 1. It explores Chase&#8217;s career, beginning with his breakout role on “Saturday Night Live” and on through three failed marriages and drug addiction.

Actor Chevy Chase said he felt “hurt” after being &#8220;left aside&#8221; during “SNL50: The Anniversary Special,” which aired in February. 
“Well, it was kind of upsetting actually,” Chase said in an upcoming documentary, “I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not,” per <a href="https://people.com/chevy-chase-hurt-being-left-out-of-snl-50th-celebration-11875499">People</a>. 
He went on, “This is probably the first time I’m saying it. But I expected that I would’ve been on the stage too with all the other actors. When Garrett [Morris] and Laraine [Newman] went on the stage there, I was curious as to why I didn’t. No one asked me to. Why was I left aside?”
“Why was Bill Murray there and why was I not? I don’t have an answer for that,” Chase said.
The 82-year-old comedian was part of the “SNL” cast from the very beginning, and launched a successful movie career after becoming a breakout star on the show. He earned two Emmy Awards out of four nominations for both acting and writing on the show.

Chase exited halfway through season two to launch his film career, but returned frequently for guest appearances.
“I did bring it up once in a text to [“SNL” creator Lorne Michaels] and then took it back,” Chase continued. “I said, ‘Okay, I take it back, silly.’ But it’s not that silly. Somebody’s made a bad mistake there. I don’t know who it was, but somebody made a mistake. They should’ve had me on that stage. It hurt.”
Chase was present at the “SNL50” special but was not featured. In the upcoming documentary, his wife Jayni Chase said the organizers &#8220;told Chevy up until that day that there were two bits, they were going back and forth.&#8221;
&#8220;And then, all of the sudden, &#8216;No, there&#8217;s no bit,'&#8221; she said.
“There were a couple versions of [the ‘Weekend Update’ segment] and we went back and forth on that,” Michaels said in the documentary. “There was also a caution from somebody that I don’t want to name that Chevy, you know, wasn’t as focused.”

It’s impossible to miss the show’s extreme bias, an echo of late-night television in the post-Johnny Carson world.
The show’s key players, including founder Lorne Michaels, are either kidding themselves about the show’s new normal or think it’s funny to lie about it. Michaels told The Hollywood Reporter that <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-features/snl-interview-trump-jokes-2024-election-lorne-michaels-future-1236005680/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“SNL” still hits both sides of the aisle</a>. Really.
<blockquote>You can’t lecture the audience, which most of politics is now, people lecturing the audience. Ours is like, yeah, there are kind of idiots on both sides. And we’re not going to do anything that didn’t work at dress [rehearsal]. It has to play. It has to be comedy. We’re first and foremost a comedy show.</blockquote>
That’s not a new show writer or a gullible cast member. It’s the comedy genius who introduced “Saturday Night Live” to us all the way back in 1975.
The show’s early days cast a huge shadow on the new cast. Said shadow grows even longer this Fall.

Mostly unfamiliar faces bring Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner and the original &#8220;Not Ready for Prime-Time Players&#8221; back to screens across the country.
The film is earning raves from early festival screenings. It also reminds fans why the show once delivered must-see comedy. Not every joke landed, of course. Others have aged poorly. If the sight of John Belushi in a bee costume makes you howl in 2024, you may need professional help.
That unpredictability was part of the show’s appeal. You didn’t know what might happen next. Yes, it was live, and that element helped. The cast members dug into the show’s free-spirited ways, pushing the comedy envelope early and often.

All it took was one irreverent sketch to fuel water cooler gossip for days.
The show’s finely tuned anarchy spoke to an era grappling with the end of the Vietnam War, the fallout from Watergate and an energy crisis. 
Years later, “SNL” morphed into a comedy incubator: Aykroyd. Belushi. Murray. Chase. Murphy. Carvey. Rock. Sandler. Ferrell. Fey. It may have lost some of its comic edge, but it hit both sides of the political aisle and kept the focus where it belonged.
Is it funny? Then it makes the final cut.

The current “SNL” lacks both laughs and cultural clout. When was the last time “SNL” broke out a major comedy star? Current player Bowen Yang has snagged steady big-screen work, but he’s never the star and his films typically make “indie-film” cash.
The media will prop up the show’s 50th season, giving every anti-Trump sketch wall-to-wall coverage. A shrinking band of progressives will tune in to see how the show hits Trump in the weeks before the election.
They know the show’s comedic targets even if they don’t know every punchline word for word.

Everyone else has found new comedy faces to speak Truth to Power. Think Tim Dillon, Ryan Long, Andrew Schulz, Tyler Fischer and Shane Gillis. These comedians didn’t need “SNL” to jump-start their careers. Gillis famously got fired from the show before he could step on its historic stage for past “problematic” jokes.
He returned four years later as a show host, his presence proving “SNL” needed him far more than he needed the NBC showcase.
The rest reach out via Patreon, YouTube, stand-up stages, Netflix specials and podcasts, bypassing both Hollywood and the once-might “SNL” incubator.
You never know what they’ll say next or who they’ll target with the next withering punchline. That sense of chaos once lived in “SNL’s” creative DNA. Now, that’s all but gone, replaced by corporate groupthink and an unwillingness to rock the boat.
Remember how guest player Brad Pitt feted Dr. Anthony Fauci during the pandemic? Or how several cast members serenaded outgoing President Barack Obama with the song, <a href="https://www.thewrap.com/snl-ends-musical-sidney-poitier-inspired-obama-dedication-sir-love-video/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“To Sir, With Love?”</a> Later, “SNL” player Jay Pharoah admitted the show <a href="https://www.hollywoodintoto.com/jay-pharoah-snl-obama/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“gave up”</a> on mocking Obama during his two terms in office.

Is this comedy or DNC propaganda? The line isn’t even blurry on most nights.
“SNL” once invited both Trump and Elon Musk to host the show. Would NBC brass allow either to do the same today, even if the ratings would likely be huge?

Legendary comedian and actor Chevy Chase recently got into a public back-and-forth with his “Community” co-star, Joel McHale. At one point, McHale said “That’s just Chevy being Chevy,” implying that his abrasive personality is well known in the Hollywood community.
And it’s true. For years, rumors have circulated that the 80-year-old actor is difficult to work with and, on top of that, kind of a jerk. Fans may find that surprising because it doesn’t match up with his funnyman persona in the least. But is there any truth to these rumors?

Chase’s feud with McHale stems from an interview the “National Lampoon&#8221; actor did for Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast in September. When asked about his decision to leave the comedy series “Community,” Chase gave a blunt response.
“I honestly felt the show wasn’t funny enough for me, ultimately. I felt a little bit constrained,” the actor told Maron. Chase’s character was eventually written off the show during season 4. “Everybody had their bits, and I thought they were all good. It just wasn’t hard-hitting enough for me.”
“I didn’t mind the character,” Chase said of playing millionaire community college student Pierce Hawthorne. “I just felt that it was … I felt happier being alone. I just didn’t want to be surrounded by that table, every day, with those people. It was too much.”
McHale told <a href="https://people.com/joel-mchale-dismisses-chevy-chase-community-digs-exclusive-8350925" target="_blank" rel="noopener">People</a> of his former co-star’s comments, “I was like, ‘Hey, no one was keeping you there.’ I mean, we weren’t sentenced to that show. It was like, ‘All right, you could have left if you really wanted that.’ But yeah, you know Chevy. That’s Chevy being Chevy.”
“[Chase] stopped hurting my feelings in 2009,” McHale quipped, referring to the year the show started.

McHale isn’t the only one who supposedly felt the sting of Chase’s behavior. There’s the legendary tale of Chase punching fellow comedian Bill Murray backstage on “SNL” in 1978 after saying Murray’s “face was so filled with pockmarks that it looked like the ideal landing spot for Neil Armstrong.” It should be noted that Murray had allegedly made derogatory remarks about Chase’s estranged wife first, which is what led to the physical altercation.
When asked about the fight during a 2010 <a href="https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/interviews/a8537/chevy-chase-interview-1010/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> with Esquire, Chase didn’t deny the comments but did explain that no punches were really thrown.
“Billy Murray and I came to fisticuffs, but we never really ended up hitting each other. We tried, but Belushi got in the middle and we both ended up hitting John,” he told the outlet at the time. “And if anybody deserved to be slapped in the forehead it was John, for instigating it all.”

A lot of the comedic actor’s bad reputation stems from his time on “SNL.” There was the incident when he allegedly told Robert Downey, Jr. that his father was probably burning in hell. Legend also holds that Chase suggested doing AIDS skits about Terry Sweeney, one of his gay castmates on the show. 
Many fans find it hard to reconcile all this negative press with the affable, lovable character Chase plays on TV and in movies. Born Cornelius Crane Chase in 1943, the actor hailed from lower Manhattan and Woodstock, New York. He became a breakout star as one of the original cast members on“Saturday Night Live” beginning in 1975 with the recurring Weekend Update skit that’s since become an integral part of the show. 
Chase received four Emmy nominations and won twice for his writing and acting contributions on “SNL.” He was known for the catchphrase, &#8220;I&#8217;m Chevy Chase… and you&#8217;re not&#8221; plus his Weekend Update closing line, &#8220;Good night, and have a pleasant tomorrow.&#8221;
But he didn’t have very nice things to say about the modern version of “SNL.” Chase said during a 2018 <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2018/lifestyle/chevy-chase-cant-change/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> with The Washington Post that the show’s current sketches aren’t up to his standards.
“I had to watch a little of it, and I just couldn’t f***ing believe it. That means a whole generation of sh**heads laughs at the worst f***ing humor in the world. You know what I mean? How could you dare give that generation worse sh** than they already have in their lives? It just drives me nuts,” Chase told the outlet.
Speaking of “SNL,” cast member Pete Davidson has no love for one of the show’s original members. &#8220;He&#8217;s a f***ing douchebag. F*** Chevy Chase. I hate that dude,&#8221; Davidson told Stern during an interview. &#8220;He&#8217;s just a genuinely bad, racist person, and I don&#8217;t like him,” the comedian added.
Chase was accused of being racist before. Donald Glover said the actor used racial slurs on the set of “Community,” including making “racial cracks” during filming. Glover claims Chase told him, “People think you’re funnier because you’re black” and said he used the n-word.
Following his success on “SNL,” the actor went on to star in the comedy “Foul Play” (1978) opposite Goldie Hawn. But he’s best known and loved for his portrayal of golfer Ty Webb in “Caddyshack” (1980) and Clark W. Griswold in five National Lampoon&#8217;s Vacation films. He also appeared in “Fletch” (1985), “Seems Like Old Times” (1980), “Spies Like Us” (1985), “Three Amigos!” (1986) and “Funny Farm” (1988).

The actor had a bit of a downfall following his rise to superstardom. Subsequent movies didn’t perform as well as expected and his late night talk show, “The Chevy Chase Show,” was canceled after just five weeks. 
But is Chase a man who’s unfairly judged, or is he really a terrible person beneath all the jokes? Fans may never know for sure, but to hear him tell it, he’s not too concerned about his reputation anyway. When asked about people calling him a “jerk” following his stint on “Community,” Chase told <a href="https://ew.com/tv/chevy-chase-responds-snl-community-costars/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Entertainment Weekly</a> that his haters can shove it.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t give a crap! I am who I am. And I like&#8230; who I am. I don&#8217;t care. And it&#8217;s part of me that I don&#8217;t care. And I&#8217;ve thought about that a lot. And I don&#8217;t know what to tell you, man. I just don&#8217;t care,&#8221; the actor said.

Is Chevy Chase Really That Terrible? Either Way, He Doesn’t Care

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/comedy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Comedian</a> Joel McHale issued a response to some critical remarks his former “Community” co-star <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/chevy-chase" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chevy Chase</a> made during a podcast interview last month.
“[Chase] stopped hurting my feelings in 2009,” McHale, 51, joked when asked about it by <a href="https://people.com/joel-mchale-dismisses-chevy-chase-community-digs-exclusive-8350925" target="_blank" rel="noopener">People</a>. 
The 80-year-old actor made waves after appearing on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast in September and making critical remarks about his time on the NBC comedy “Community,” which he was part of from 2009 until 2012.
“I honestly felt the show wasn’t funny enough for me, ultimately. I felt a little bit constrained,” Chase told Maron. The “National Lampoon” actor was eventually written off the show during season 4. “Everybody had their bits, and I thought they were all good. It just wasn’t hard-hitting enough for me.”
Chase played Pierce Hawthorne, a millionaire attending community college with McHale and other castmates who were much younger than he was. His character died of dehydration while collecting sperm samples.
“I didn’t mind the character,” Chase said during the interview. “I just felt that it was … I felt happier being alone. I just didn’t want to be surrounded by that table, every day, with those people. It was too much.”
McHale told People of his former co-star&#8217;s comments, “I was like, ‘Hey, no one was keeping you there.’ I mean, we weren&#8217;t sentenced to that show. It was like, ‘All right, you could have left if you really wanted that.’ But yeah, you know Chevy. That&#8217;s Chevy being Chevy.”

“I wrote about this in my book, but I was like, ‘Hey, the feeling&#8217;s mutual, bud,’&#8221; McHale said, referencing his 2016 memoir, “Thanks for the Money: How to Use My Life Story to Become the Best Joel McHale You Can Be.”
McHale also previously mentioned that Chase would likely not be part of the spinoff movie based on “Community.” He told Kelly Ripa during a podcast interview that it seemed unlikely that the “Vacation” star would join the former cast, and not just because of his character being killed off. 
“Yeah, I don’t think so,” McHale told Ripa when she asked if Chase would be part of the reunion. “There weren’t any issues at all when we were making the show,” he continued sarcastically.

In the middle of the night Wednesday, police arrested an armed California man near Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh&#8217;s home after the man allegedly told officers he wanted to kill the justice.
Supreme Court Public Information Officer Patricia McCabe confirmed to The Daily Wire on Wednesday morning that &#8220;at approximately 1:50 a.m. today, a man was arrested near Justice Kavanaugh’s residence.&#8221;
&#8220;The man was armed and made threats against Justice Kavanaugh,&#8221; she said. &#8220;He was transported to Montgomery County Police 2nd District.&#8221;
That individual was an adult male from California, who was taken into custody and transported to the Montgomery County Police Station after officers received a call at 1:40 am in the area of Kavanaugh&#8217;s chevy chase home, the Montgomery County Police Department told The Daily Wire on Wednesday.
The case has now been handed over to the FBI, the spokeswoman said, and the Montgomery Police Department is not able to comment on whether or not he had a weapon.

Anonymous sources familiar with the investigation <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2022/06/08/kavanaugh-threat-arrest-justice/">told The Washington Post</a> that the man is in his mid-20s and was carrying at least one weapon as well as burglary tools.

Someone had tipped off police that the man could potentially pose a threat to Kavanaugh, the sources told the publication, and the man was stopped on a street near Kavanaugh&#8217;s Montgomery County residence. He did not enter Kavanaugh&#8217;s property, the report said.

The Washington Post reported that initial evidence suggests the man was angry over recent mass shootings and reacted to a leaked draft opinion indicating that the Supreme Court would overturn Roe v. Wade.

&#8220;This is why the Court must release the Dobbs opinion as soon as possible,&#8221; she added. &#8220;This is not, to quote the Chief Justice, &#8216;business as usual&#8217; at the Court. The threat to the justices is not theoretical. Until the opinion is finally released, the justices are in grave danger.&#8221;
Severino called on Biden to &#8220;stop appeasing the radicals&#8221; in his party, emphasizing that &#8220;protests belong in the public square, not at justices&#8217; private homes.&#8221;
&#8220;Will you finally condemn them?&#8221; she asked.

A May 13 Department of Homeland Security (DHS) <a href="https://www.axios.com/2022/05/18/supreme-court-abortion-roe-protests-violence">memo obtained by Axios</a> revealed that government officials are investigating threats to the justices, the clerks, to places of worship, and to abortion clinics.
These threats “are likely to persist and may increase leading up to and following the issuing of the Court’s official ruling,” the memo said.
Axios reported that the memo attempts to link the pro-life movement to white supremacy, highlighting pro-life violence in the past. But the memo emphasizes that the extremist acts might come from pro-abortion individuals.
“The mere advocacy of political or social positions, political activism, use of strong rhetoric, or generalized philosophic embrace of violent tactics does not constitute domestic violent extremism or illegal activity and is constitutionally protected,” the memo adds, according to Axios.
Many on the right <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/abortion-supporters-leaked-supreme-court-draft-to-intimidate-the-court-pro-life-advocates-say">have suggested</a> that the draft opinion was most likely leaked by a progressive Supreme Court clerk in an effort to intimidate the court and change its decision. Following the leak conservative activists and legal experts had quickly called for the Supreme Court to release its decision on Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
And in an early May editorial, the Wall Street Journal Editorial Board expressed concerns that an “abortion fanatic” might “commit an act of violence” in an effort to subvert the court’s expected decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
“One question is how fast the Court should now move to publish its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization,” <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-supreme-court-leak-on-roe-v-wade-samuel-alito-john-roberts-abortion-draft-opinion-11651605792">the board said</a>. “There’s an argument for getting it out fast to make it a fait accompli.”
“Politico said the Alito draft was circulated in February, so the Justices have had ample time to absorb it and respond,” it continued. “We hate to say this, but some abortion fanatic could decide to commit an act of violence to stop a 5-4 ruling. It’s an awful thought, but we live in fanatical times.”
