A parental rights group on Wednesday filed a civil rights complaint against a South Carolina school district over teacher groups that “appear to exclude individuals based on their race.”
Parents Defending Education filed a <a href="https://dw-wp-production.imgix.net/2025/03/Charleston-County-School-District_OCR-_Redacted-1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">complaint</a> with the Office of Civil Rights for the Department of Education over multiple racially-focused “affinity groups” hosted by the Charleston County School District. The complaint, first shared with The Daily Wire, says that the groups violate federal civil rights laws by limiting participation by race. 
The <a href="https://archive.ph/oCimf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">groups</a> in question are the “Hispanic Latino Affinity Group” and the “Black Educator Affinity Group.” 
“Charleston County School District has affinity group programming that is not open to all. The District allows only some teachers to participate in affinity group programming and participation is based on their race,” the complaint reads. “Descriptions of individual affinity groups in the District appear to exclude individuals based on their race.”
According to the district’s website, the Black Educator Affinity Group is “a space for black educators to connect to one another, support one another, and celebrate one another in a safe space.”
The mission of the Hispanic Latino Affinity Group is to promote “professional development and career advancement opportunities” for Hispanic and Latino employees in the district and to “create a Hispanic-Latino Affinity committee to support recruitment, retention, and innovation among CCSD Hispanic-Latino employees.”
“Both affinity groups encourage hiring employees based on race and offer professional development opportunities exclusively for black and Hispanic-Latino employees,” the complaint says. “Furthermore, while other Districts ensures affinity group bodies are accessible to all teachers, Charleston County School District evades responsibility for the practices of its affinity groups, stating that ‘each affinity group establishes its own mission and goal.’”
The complaint argues that the affinity groups could run afoul of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits federal funding from going toward entities practicing racial discrimination, and the Equal Protection clause of the 14th Amendment. 
The school district told The Daily Wire that all employee were welcome to join the affinity groups.
&#8220;Charleston County School District&#8217;s affinity groups were designed to provide support, mentorship, and networking opportunities for educators. Participation was completely voluntary, and all employees were welcome to join,&#8221; a spokesman told The Daily Wire.
&#8220;Leaders are currently reviewing all district practices that could be affected by the presidential administration&#8217;s orders to ensure all CCSD students receive the support and educational opportunities they need, including any necessary actions. Under the guidance of legal counsel, CCSD leadership met on February 25, February 26, and March 4 to advance discussions and implement any appropriate changes,&#8221; the district added.
Parents Defending Education President Nicole Neily told The Daily Wire that it would continue to challenge districts like Charleston that promote racially-focused programs and opportunities. 
&#8220;It&#8217;s grotesque that districts continue to separate teachers, students, and community members on the basis of skin color, and PDE will continue to file complaints about these types of racially segregated programs until such practices end,” she said. “Where there&#8217;s smoke there&#8217;s fire — and sadly, when a school spends finite time and resources organizing events like this, we often see other discriminatory practices on the books as well.&#8221;  
President Donald Trump signed an executive order in January directing all federal funding to be cut off for school districts that promote racial and gender ideology in an effort to go after the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at schools across the country.

On Monday in Charleston, South Carolina, Black Lives Matters activists showed up to protest against defenders of a monument of John C. Calhoun, an ardent proponent of slavery and the seventh vice-president of the United States. Then a group of white activists reportedly calling themselves &#8220;Stand As One&#8221; showed up brandishing signs <a href="https://twitchy.com/brettt-3136/2020/06/22/put-that-st-down-sister-blm-protesters-clash-with-white-liberals-with-whip-marks-cracker-for-sale-signs/">allegedly emblazoned</a> “Cracker for Sale” and “Hang that Cracker.” Some of the men were bare-chested with what looked like body makeup replicating whiplash scars on their backs, some had ropes tied around their necks and were led by black men to reenact historical roles as slaves in reverse, and some activists shouted rhetoric such as “What if this was your history” and “What if the roles were reversed?”

Calhoun, who died in 1850, did not want the South to secede, but his devotion to the cause of slavery laid the groundwork for the Civil War, as <a href="https://www.historynet.com/john-c-calhoun-the-man-who-started-the-civil-war.htm">historynet.com</a> notes. He was elected to Congress in 1810 as a federalist along with House Speaker Henry Clay of Kentucky. In 1817 he became President James Monroe’s secretary of war, strengthened the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and instituted reforms of the U.S. Army which last roughly one hundred years.
Calhoun served as vice-president under John Quincy Adams in 1824, but switched to he Democratic Party in 1828 to run as the vice-presidential candidate under Andrew Jackson because he disapproved of Adams expanding federal power; Jackson and Calhoun won the election.
When Congress passed a tariff that Southerners felt tilted the scales toward the north, Calhoun wrote an essay titled “South Carolina Exposition and Protest” that argued states had a constitutional right to nullify federal government actions they regarded as unconstitutional, thus cementing his position as the leading proponent of states’ rights.
Calhoun ultimately left Jackson’s administration and became a U.S. senator. Desirous of protecting the economic power of the South, Calhoun championed slavery, saying, “I have ever had but one opinion on the subject. Our fate as a people is bound up in the question.” He argued that the Constitution denied Congress power over slavery. He asserted that the South “cannot remain here in an endless struggle in defense of our character, our property, and institutions,” saying that unless abolitionist work came to a halt, “we must become, finally, two peoples…. Abolition and the Union cannot co-exist.”
Calhoun stated, “Never before has the black race…from the dawn of history to the present day, attained a condition so civilized and so improved, not only physically, but morally and intellectually. It came to us in a low, degraded, and savage condition, and in the course of a few generations it has grown up under the fostering care of our institutions.”

Dylann Roof, the racist butcher who slaughtered nine people in a church at Charleston, SC, has zero regrets about his barbaric actions.
In the weeks following his massacre, Roof <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/04/us/dylann-roof-sentencing.html?_r=0">wrote</a> in a jailhouse journal, &#8220;I do not regret what I did. I am not sorry. I have not shed a tear for the innocent people I killed.&#8221;
Roof&#8217;snracism continued to flow out in the pages of the journal.
&#8220;I do feel sorry for the innocent white children forced to live in this sick country and I do feel sorry for the innocent white people that are killed daily at the hands of the lower race,&#8221; Roof wrote. &#8220;I have shed a tear of self-pity for myself. I feel pity that I had to do what I did in the first place. I feel pity that I had to give up my life because of a situation that should never have existed.&#8221;
Roof&#8217;s manifesto explains that his race obsession began when he saw the media hype around George Zimmerman fatally shooting Trayvon Martin, but yet there was no coverage of black-on-white murders. This somehow led to Roof&#8217;s twisted, bizarre conclusion that he needed to murder blacks.
&#8220;I have no choice,&#8221; Roof wrote. &#8220;I am not in the position to, alone, go into the ghetto and fight. I chose Charleston because it is most historic city in my state, and at one time had the highest ratio of blacks to Whites in the country. We have no skinheads, no real KKK, no one doing anything but talking on the internet. Well someone has to have the bravery to take it to the real world, and I guess that has to be me.&#8221;
Joey Meek, a friend of Roof&#8217;s, told <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/19/us/charleston-church-shooting-suspect/">CNN</a> that Roof longed for the days of segregation and aimed to launch a race war.
&#8220;He wanted it to be white with white, and black with black,&#8221; Meek said. &#8220;He had it in his mind, and he didn&#8217;t really let nobody know (what he was going to do).&#8221;

Nobody took Roof seriously, as he constantly used racial slurs as a manner of joking and had nonwhite friends, but it turns out that Roof was serious&#8211;and deadly. When Roof was committing his evil actions in the Charleston church, he coldly told one of the survivors that he had &#8220;to do this, because y&#8217;all are raping our women and y&#8217;all are taking over our world.&#8221;
Federal prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Roof, who isn&#8217;t even angling for the insanity defense, as he calls psychology a &#8220;Jewish invention.&#8221; It&#8217;s safe to say that nobody will be shedding any tears for Roof should he be sentenced to death.

On Thursday, Dylann Roof, 22, who murdered nine black people in a June 2015 attack at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina during the victims’ Bible study in a racially motived attack, was <a href="https://apnews.com/64fe31eeb836440e89c918a3c47cbdf8/The-Latest:-Jurors-convict-Dylann-Roof-in-church-slayings?utm_campaign=SocialFlow&amp;utm_source=Twitter&amp;utm_medium=AP">convicted</a> on all 33 counts after a jury took less than two hours to reach its verdict.
Roof was convicted by a jury of nine white people and three black people; they will meet on January 3 to decide if Roof should face life in prison or the death penalty.
The panel of nine white people and three black people will reconvene next month to decide whether Roof faces life in prison or the death penalty. Roof simply stared ahead as the verdict was read.
Before the verdict was reached, the jury had asked to rehear part of Roof’s videotaped confession. Roof had told the FBI that he murdered five people; he was surprised he had killed nine people.
Witnesses in the trial testified that Roof had visited Charleston numerous times in the months before the attack. Defense attorney David Bruck argued Roof was suicidal, and never understood exactly what he had done.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Nathan Williams told jurors Roof waited until the Bible study group had its eyes closed for prayer before he shot and killed them; Williams added that Roof believed black people were animals and less than human.
In Roof’s “manifesto” he <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2016/12/13/us/dylann-roof-murder-trial/">wrote</a>, &#8221; &#8220;The event that truly awakened me was the Trayvon Martin case . . .” He added, “Negroes have lower Iqs, lower impulse control, and higher testosterone levels in generals. These three things alone are a recipe for violent behavior.” Roof stated wanted to start a race war by targeting Emanuel AME Church. He wrote, &#8220;I have no choice. I am not in the position to, alone, go into the ghetto and fight. I chose Charleston because it is most historic city in my state, and at one time had the highest ratio of blacks to Whites in the country.&#8221;
