Camille Paglia is a professor of humanities and media studies at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where she has been a faculty member since 1984. Paglia describes herself as transgender, but unlike so many other transgender people, she is pro-capitalism and hostile to those who&#8217;d restrict free speech. She&#8217;s a libertarian. As to modern ideas that include &#8220;gender-inclusive pronouns&#8221; such as zie, sie and zim, Paglia says it is lunacy. In a 2017 interview, Paglia was especially irritated by the thought police running college campuses today. In defending University of Toronto professor Jordan Peterson, who has become a pariah for his refusal to cave in to nonsensical gender-inclusive pronouns, Paglia said that the English language was created by great artists such as Chaucer and Shakespeare, Wordsworth and Joyce. She added: &#8220;How dare you, you sniveling little maniac, tell us how we&#8217;re gonna use pronouns! Go take a hike.&#8221;
On feminism, Paglia criticizes what she calls the &#8220;antisex and repressively doctrinaire side of feminism.&#8221; She calls it &#8220;victim feminism&#8221; and complains that &#8220;everything we&#8217;d won in the 1990s has been totally swept away. Now we have this endless privileging of victimhood, with a pathological vulnerability seen as the default human mode.&#8221; Everyone must yield to it &#8220;in the workplace, in universities, in the demand for safe spaces.&#8221; Paglia adds, &#8220;What I am saying throughout my work is that girls who are indoctrinated to see men not as equals but as oppressors and rapists are condemned to remain in a permanently juvenile condition for life.&#8221;
Paglia&#8217;s bold statements got her in a bit of hot water last April. University of the Arts students demanded that she be fired over public comments she&#8217;d made that were not wholly sympathetic to the #MeToo movement, as well as for an interview with the Weekly Standard that they called &#8220;transphobic.&#8221; That latter denunciation is particularly slapstick, since Paglia describes herself as &#8220;transgender,&#8221; writes Tunku Varadarajan, Hoover Institution&#8217;s institutional editor, in his Aug. 30 Wall Street Journal article &#8220;A Feminist Capitalist Professor Under Fire.&#8221;
The students&#8217; demand that Paglia be fired fell on deaf ears. Fortunately, there are a few college presidents with guts and common sense. President David Yager is one of them. He wrote in an open letter to students: &#8220;Artists over the centuries have suffered censorship, and even persecution, for the expression of their beliefs through their work. My answer is simple: not now, not at UArts.&#8221;
There&#8217;s another part of this story that&#8217;s particularly interesting considering today&#8217;s young peoples&#8217; love of socialism. Paglia says that children now &#8220;are raised in a far more affluent period. Even people without much money have cellphones, televisions, and access to cars. They&#8217;re raised in an air-conditioned environment. I can still remember when there was no air-conditioning.&#8221;
Paglia says: &#8220;Everything is so easy now. The stores are so plentifully supplied. You just go in and buy fruits and vegetables from all over the world.&#8221; Young people ignorant of history and economics &#8220;have a sense that this is the way life has always been. Because they&#8217;ve never been exposed to history, they have no idea that these are recent attainments that come from a very specific economic system.&#8221; Young people led by the likes of Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez fail to realize that capitalism has &#8220;produced this cornucopia around us. But the young seem to believe in having the government run everything, and that the private companies that are doing things for profit around them, and supplying them with goods, will somehow exist forever.&#8221; For the feminists, Paglia says, &#8220;I insist that capitalism has produced the glorious emancipation of women.&#8221; Today, they can &#8220;support themselves and live on their own, and no longer must humiliatingly depend on father or husband.&#8221;
Reading Varadarajan&#8217;s article made my day knowing that there&#8217;s at least one intelligent radical feminist. But what else is to be expected from anyone who&#8217;s a libertarian capitalist?

Over the course of the last two weeks, two university presidents have issued strong rebukes of attempts by activist students to fire or silence high-profile university professors with whom they ideologically disagree. Last Tuesday, the president of George Mason University issued a statement to the students calling for the firing of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh informing them that while it may be &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/46172/george-mason-university-president-has-painful-news-paul-bois">painful</a>&#8221; to some of them, standing behind their three-year contract with Kavanaugh as a teacher is &#8220;very, very important for the integrity of the university.&#8221; A few days earlier, the president of the Unversity of the Arts told activists that they would not be allowed to &#8220;suppress&#8221; free speech on his campus by ousting long-time faculty member and famous &#8220;anti-feminist feminist&#8221; Camille Paglia.
Paglia has come under fire from her fellow progressives for pushing back against the transgender and #MeToo movements, resulting in a student-led petition for her to be fired by the University of the Arts (UArts). But in an <a href="https://www.uarts.edu/node/43674">open letter</a> to students, faculty, and staff posted on April 10, UArts President David Yager made painfully clear that the activists weren&#8217;t going to be allowed to silence Paglia (h/t <a href="https://hotair.com/archives/2019/04/18/student-activists-tried-get-camille-paglia-fired-university-said-no/">John Sexton</a>).
Yager begins by &#8220;re-affirm[ing] the University&#8217;s core values, and our commitment to rigorous critical inquiry in support of our mission of Advancing Human Creativity&#8221;: &#8220;Our core value on integrity and diversity is clear: we are a supportive community committed to individual and artistic integrity and inclusion,&#8221; he states. &#8220;We promote and respect self-expression, a wide range of ideas and diversity in all its forms.&#8221;
That core value, he suggests, is under pressure by the increasing lack of civility in debate and by those who seek to &#8220;suppress&#8221; speech with which they disagree. &#8220;Unfortunately, as a society we are living in a time of sharp divisions&#8212;of opinions, perspectives and beliefs&#8212;and that has led to decreased civility, increased anger and a &#8216;new normal&#8217; of offense given and taken,&#8221; he writes. &#8220;Across our nation it is all too common that opinions expressed that differ from another&#8217;s&#8212;especially those that are controversial&#8212;can spark passion and even outrage, often resulting in calls to suppress that speech.&#8221;
But, Yager stresses, that &#8220;simply cannot be allowed to happen.&#8221;
&#8220;I firmly believe that limiting the range of voices in society erodes our democracy,&#8221; he continues. &#8220;Universities, moreover, are at the heart of the revolutionary notion of free expression: promoting the free exchange of ideas is part of the core reason for their existence.&#8221;
Yager then underscores the importance of defending the &#8220;open interchange of opinions and beliefs&#8221; and &#8220;fostering a climate conducive to respectful intellectual debate that empowers and equips our students to meet the challenges they will face in their futures.&#8221; These values, he suggests, are particularly important in art schools.
&#8220;Artists over the centuries have suffered censorship, and even persecution, for the expression of their beliefs through their work,&#8221; he writes. &#8220;My answer is simple: not now, not at UArts.&#8221;
&#8220;Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis&#8217; 1927 advice still holds true today: that the remedy for messages we disagree with or dislike is more speech and not enforced silence,&#8221; Yager adds. Paglia has since responded to the letter, <a href="https://www.philly.com/news/camille-paglia-u-arts-professor-philadelphia-protest-petition-transgender-survivors-sexual-assault-david-yager-20190415.html">praising</a> it as an &#8220;eloquent statement affirming academic freedom was a landmark in contemporary education&#8221; and expressing her hope that it will be &#8220;a turning point in how American colleges and universities deal with their rampant problem of compulsory ideological conformity.&#8221;

Iconic and iconoclastic feminist Camille Paglia regularly infuriates her liberal colleagues by exposing the self-contradictions and double standards of the progressive left. On Sean Hannity&#8217;s radio show on Tuesday, Paglia did it again, this time passionately asserting what conservatives have been saying for a while now: Democrats have made a mockery of journalism.
Hannity led into the discussion by citing Paglia&#8217;s recent discussion of the Democrats&#8217; self-defeating &#8220;<a href="http://www.weeklystandard.com/camille-paglia-on-trump-democrats-transgenderism-and-islamist-terror/article/2008464">nationwide orgy of rage and spite</a>.&#8221; Paglia, who voted for Bernie Sanders, launched into a unflinchingly brutal critique of her own party, particularly as it has influenced journalism. The ceaseless hysterics from the Democrats she said, is &#8220;obscene&#8221; and &#8220;outrageous,&#8221; and their &#8220;fantasy and hallucination&#8221; have not only hurt their own party, but journalism in America.
&#8220;It shows that the Democrats are nothing now but words and fantasy and hallucination and Hollywood,&#8221; she <a href="http://www.breitbart.com/video/2017/06/21/camille-paglia-blames-dems-for-destroying-journalism-it-is-going-to-take-decades-to-recover/">said</a>. &#8220;There&#8217;s no journalism left. What&#8217;s happened to The New York Times? What&#8217;s happened to the major networks? It&#8217;s an outrage.&#8221;
She continued: &#8220;I&#8217;m a professor of media studies, in addition to a professor of humanities, OK? And I think it&#8217;s absolutely grotesque the way my party has destroyed journalism. Right now, it is going to take decades to recover from this atrocity that&#8217;s going on where the news media have turned themselves over to the most childish fraternity, kind of buffoonish behavior.&#8221;
In a wide-ranging interview with <a href="http://www.weeklystandard.com/camille-paglia-on-trump-democrats-transgenderism-and-islamist-terror/article/2008464">The Weekly Standard </a>last week, Paglia blasted the Democratic party&#8217;s &#8220;orgy of rage and spite,&#8221; which she argued is driving a wedge between the party and American voters.
&#8220;In an abject failure of leadership that may be one of the most disgraceful episodes in the history of the modern Democratic party, Chuck Schumer, who had risen to become the Senate Democratic leader after the retirement of Harry Reid, asserted absolutely no moral authority as the party spun out of control in a nationwide orgy of rage and spite,&#8221; Paglia told The Weekly Standard. &#8220;Nor were there statesmanlike words of caution and restraint from two seasoned politicians whom I have admired for decades and believe should have run for president long ago &#8212; Senator Dianne Feinstein and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi.&#8221;
Paglia&#8217;s condemnation of Pelosi played out perfectly in the Democrats&#8217; devastating loss in Georgia on Tuesday, the Republicans having <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/17767/6-reasons-democrats-blew-ga-6-ben-shapiro">used Pelosi</a> as part of the campaign against Jon Ossoff. 
&#8220;How do Democrats imagine they can ever expand their electoral support if they go on and on in this self-destructive way, impugning half the nation as vile racists and homophobes?&#8221; said Paglia, a point repeatedly made by conservatives, adding, &#8220;Many highly educated, upper-middle-class Democrats regard themselves as exemplars of &#8216;compassion&#8217; (which they have elevated into a supreme political principle) and yet they routinely assail Trump voters as ignorant, callous hate-mongers.&#8221;

During an interview with The Weekly Standard, <a href="http://www.weeklystandard.com/camille-paglia-on-trump-democrats-transgenderism-and-islamist-terror/article/2008464">published</a> on Thursday, feminist author and professor Camille Paglia sounded-off on the anti-science transgender movement, highlighting the disturbing trend of administering puberty blockers to children deemed transgender, which she labeled &#8220;a criminal violation of human rights.&#8221;
Paglia, an open liberal who identifies as a lesbian, explained that she&#8217;s &#8220;highly skeptical about the current transgender wave, which I think has been produced by far more complicated psychological and sociological factors than current gender discourse allows.&#8221;
&#8220;Furthermore, I condemn the escalating prescription of puberty blockers (whose long-term effects are unknown) for children,&#8221; she added. &#8220;I regard this practice as a criminal violation of human rights.&#8221;
Paglia is correct. Giving your gender-confused child hormone blockers, therapies and even facilitating mutilating surgeries (yes, that happens) is tantamount to child abuse. In fact, there is a movement of such victims currently sounding the alarm on the so-called &#8220;transgender cult&#8221; pushing these harmful ideas. 
One such victim <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/11672/national-geographic-features-transgender-9-year-amanda-prestigiacomo">recalled</a> her painful experience:

&#8220;I am a real, live 22-year-old woman, with a scarred chest and a broken voice, and five o&#8217;clock shadow because I couldn&#8217;t face the idea of growing up to be a woman, that&#8217;s my reality,&#8221; said Cari Stella, a de-transition woman blogger, who is one of those now telling of her heartbreaking reality after transgender therapies and surgery. &#8220;Gender was done to me, gender was traumatizing to me, I don&#8217;t want anything to do with it anymore. &#8230; It can be damn hard to figure out that the treatment you&#8217;re being told is to help you is actually making your mental health worse. Testosterone made me even more dissociated than I already was.&#8221;

As previously <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/11672/national-geographic-features-transgender-9-year-amanda-prestigiacomo">noted</a> by The Daily Wire, studies show that the vast majority of children suffering from gender confusion identify with their biological sexual identity by the time they reach adulthood; this number is estimated to be upward of 80%. 
Still, the mainstream media have time and again sought to <a href="http://uk.static.lalalay.com/upload/images/real/2016/12/20/the-january-2017-subscriber-cover-of-national-geographic-features-a-transgender-girl-avery-jackson-9_313328_.jpg">normalize</a> the practice of child-transitions, featuring countless &#8220;accepting&#8221; parents celebrating their child&#8217;s transgenderism. (As we all know, when your 5-year-old son tells you he&#8217;s actually a girl &#8212; the same child who told you he was a dinosaur three days ago &#8212; you take drastic steps to capitulate to his feelings, instead of guiding him, AKA parenting.) 
Paglia went on to smack the Left for their anti-science stances: &#8220;[I]t is certainly ironic how liberals who posture as defenders of science when it comes to global warming (a sentimental myth unsupported by evidence) flee all reference to biology when it comes to gender,&#8221; she said. 
&#8220;Biology has been programmatically excluded from women&#8217;s studies and gender studies programs for almost 50 years now,&#8221; added the feminist. &#8220;Thus very few current gender studies professors and theorists, here and abroad, are intellectually or scientifically prepared to teach their subjects.&#8221;
Always unafraid, Paglia then <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/17591/feminist-camille-paglia-transgenderism-cold-hank-berrien">uttered</a> what the Left would undoubtedly deem &#8220;hate speech&#8221;:

The cold biological truth is that sex changes are impossible. Every single cell of the human body remains coded with one&#8217;s birth gender for life. Intersex ambiguities can occur, but they are developmental anomalies that represent a tiny proportion of all human births.

&#8220;[N]o one deserves special rights, protections, or privileges on the basis of their eccentricity,&#8221; she argued, adding that there should be no &#8220;state-sponsored coercion to call someone a &#8216;woman&#8217; or a &#8216;man&#8217; simply on the basis of his or her subjective feeling about it.&#8221;
&#8220;We may well take the path of good will and defer to courtesy on such occasions, but it is our choice alone,&#8221; she said.
The feminist ended by offering some good advice for the Democrat Party: They &#8220;must get off their high horse, lose the rabid rhetoric, and reorient themselves toward practical reality and the free country they are damned lucky to live in.&#8221;

Asked by Jonathan Last why there has not been an open confrontation between feminism and transgenderism, Paglia responded that there has already been such a confrontation in the United Kingdom, citing the transgender community&#8217;s attacks on iconic feminist Germaine Greer and radical Australian feminist Sheila Jeffreys, the author of Gender Hurts.
Paglia noted, &#8220;Jeffreys identifies transsexualism with misogyny and describes it as a form of &#8216;mutilation.&#8217; She and her feminist allies encountered prolonged difficulties in securing a London speaking venue because of threats and agitation by transgender activists.&#8221;
She continued:

Feminist Camille Paglia On Transgenderism: ‘The Cold Biological Truth Is That Sex Changes Are Impossible’

In an <a href="http://freebeacon.com/culture/prominent-democratic-feminist-camille-paglia-says-hillary-clinton-exploits-feminism/">interview</a> with The Washington Free Beacon, iconic feminist author Camille Paglia unloaded on two-time failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for her exploitation of feminism. Paglia, a registered Democrat who voted for Green Party candidate Jill Stein in the 2016 election, smacked down the notion that the former secretary of state was a victim of rampant sexism which caused her defeat, blasting Hillary for her treatment of her husband&#8217;s sexual targets during his years in office.
The author also took a swipe at leftist hero and <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/7003/heres-everything-you-need-know-about-elizabeth-aaron-bandler">imaginary Indian chief</a> Elizabeth Warren. Per Paglia, Warren is &#8220;no populist,&#8221; only an &#8220;opportunist.&#8221;

What a gross exploitation of feminism &#8212; in the service of an unaccomplished woman whose entire career was spent attached to her husband&#8217;s coat tails. Hillary was handed job after job but produced no tangible results in any of them &#8212; except of course for her destabilization of North Africa during her rocky tenure as secretary of state.&#8221; 
The feminist continued to blast Hillary, highlighting the former New York Senator&#8217;s lack of service to women and children, whom Hillary contends she stands for.
&#8220;And for all her lip service to women and children, what program serving their needs did Hillary ever conceive and promote?&#8221; she asked. &#8220;She routinely signed on to other people&#8217;s programs or legislative bills but spent the bulk of her time in fundraising and networking for her own personal ambitions.&#8221;
Paglia also rebuked Hillary for something most feminists turn a blind eye to: her despicable treatment of her husband&#8217;s victims.
&#8220;I fail to see how authentic feminism can ever be ascribed to a woman who turned a blind eye to the victims of her husband&#8217;s serial abuse and workplace seductions,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The hypocrisy of feminist leaders was on full display during the Monica Lewinsky scandal, which incontrovertibly demonstrated Bill Clinton&#8217;s gross violation of basic sexual harassment policy. Although I had voted for him twice, I was the only feminist at the time who publicly condemned Clinton for his squalid and unethical behavior with an intern whose life (it is now clear) he ruined. Gloria Steinem&#8217;s slick casuistry during that shocking episode did severe damage to feminism, from which it has never fully recovered.&#8221;
Then Paglia was asked about a possible Elizabeth Warren candidacy in 2020. She was less than enthused:

I tried to take Warren seriously during the run-up to the primaries, but her outrageous silence about Sanders&#8217; candidacy when he was battling the corrupt Hillary machine made me see Warren as the facile opportunist that she is. She craftily hid from sight throughout the primaries &#8212; until Hillary won the nomination.
