A Somali flag that Buffalo, New York, city officials raised in Niagara Square earlier this week to celebrate the foreign country&#8217;s independence was cut down in the dead of night on Wednesday. The flag robbery took place one day after city officials canceled Buffalo&#8217;s Fourth of July fireworks celebration.
Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan said &#8220;unknown vandals&#8221; removed the Somali flag at some point late on Wednesday night, <a href="https://www.btpm.org/local/2026-07-02/somali-flag-cut-down-and-stolen-from-niagara-square-amid-city-fireworks-outrage">according</a> to Buffalo-Toronto Public Media. Ryan added that the Buffalo Police Department is investigating the incident. The Somali flag has been raised in Niagara Square for the past four years on July 1 to celebrate Somali Independence Day.
“Buffalo is a proud, diverse city, and our administration remains committed to honoring and celebrating the many cultures that make our community stronger,” Ryan added.
The Somali flag-raising has stirred controversy in the city, especially since it falls so close to the Fourth of July and the celebration of America&#8217;s 250th anniversary. As they raised the Somali flag in the city square, Buffalo city officials were also blasted for scrapping the Fourth of July fireworks celebration.
&#8220;City Hall canceled its downtown fireworks display, leaving Buffalo as one of the only cities in Western New York without a public Fourth of July celebration, and instead raised the flag of Somalia outside City Hall,&#8221; Erie County, New York, GOP Chairman Michael Kracker said. &#8220;No one is questioning the contributions of Buffalo&#8217;s immigrant communities. But this week belongs to all of us, as Americans.&#8221;
Mayor Ryan announced in early June that the city planned to revive its patriotic fireworks display for America&#8217;s 250th birthday. Buffalo hasn&#8217;t put on a Fourth of July fireworks show in decades as the city focuses on a big New Year&#8217;s Eve fireworks display. This week, however, Ryan said the patriotic show wouldn&#8217;t take place.
&#8220;After exploring potential locations, an appropriate site could not be identified that would provide a safe and widely accessible viewing experience for residents. As a result, the City will not be hosting a downtown fireworks display this year,&#8221; he said.
Buffalo isn&#8217;t the only American city to raise the Somali flag on government property to celebrate the foreign country. ICE arrested on Tuesday an illegal alien who raped and sodomized his 9-year-old stepdaughter, the agency told The Daily Wire.
The Department of Homeland Security released the names of five more criminal illegal aliens, whom it referred to as “the worst of the worst.” The arrests came as the Trump administration has ramped up deportation efforts, and ICE has faced protests from Democratic lawmakers and leftist activists.
One of the men arrested was Michael Kabiona, an illegal alien from the Democratic Republic of the Congo who was convicted of sexual conduct against a child.
“Thanks to ICE, this depraved pedophile is not in our communities to hurt and victimize more children,” Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told The Daily Wire. “It’s disgusting that ICE law enforcement is experiencing a 1000% increase in assaults against them while they are removing creeps like this who commit unforgivable crimes against children. Our ICE agents are heroes, end of story.”
Kabiona was convicted in 2015 for raping and sodomizing his 9-year-old stepdaughter over a two-year period, <a href="https://www4.erie.gov/da/sites/www4.erie.gov.da/files/archive/index.php-2352.html?q=pedophilic-rapist-convicted-after-trial" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Erie County, New York, prosecutors. He was sentenced to just 12 years in prison, much less than the maximum 25 years he faced.
Kabiona was convicted after testimony from the young girl whom he victimized. The victim was left with chronic injuries to her genitalia. He first came to America as a refugee, his lawyer <a href="https://buffalonews.com/news/local/buffalo-man-gets-12-years-for-sexually-assaulting-child/article_d4c24671-f7c2-5f45-85b0-5243c01d74b8.html">said</a> after the trial, claiming that the whole incident was a “shame” because  Kabiona “fought for so long to get here from a war-torn country.”

ICE also announced the arrest of 41-year-old Lorentino Martinez-Tejeda, an illegal alien from Mexico who was convicted of predatory criminal sexual assault on a minor in McHenry County, Illinois. Martinez-Tejeda <a href="https://www.mchenrycountyil.gov/Home/Components/News/News/14873/11527?arch=1&amp;npage=21">pled guilty</a> to sexually assaulting a victim under the age of 13 and was sentenced to eight years in prison.
Another illegal alien picked up by ICE was 36-year-old Nidia Tanya Quistian-Nino of Mexico, who was convicted of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver in Warton County, Texas.
The agency also picked up 51-year-old Francisco Antonio Villalobos, an illegal alien from El Salvador, convicted of kidnapping in Urbana, Illinois.

A 24-year-old woman just gave a health update after being partially paralyzed by a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/entertainment">punk rock</a> performer. 
Bird Piché was in the audience on April 30 when the Australian <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/music">band</a>, Trophy Eyes, took the stage at Mohawk Place in Buffalo, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/new-york">New York</a>. The young woman suffered a “catastrophic spinal cord injury” after a band member jumped off the stage and landed in the crowd shortly after they began playing. 
Piché spoke about what happened. &#8220;When you hear about these types of injuries, they&#8217;re obviously very serious, so I didn&#8217;t expect to have any recovery,&#8221; Piché told <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/-body-neck-woman-recalls-punk-singers-stage-dive-sent-hospital-paralyz-rcna151963">NBC News</a> from her hospital bed on Monday. &#8220;It was, like, his body and my neck,&#8221; she added. &#8220;It was a crowd-surfing thing.”
&#8220;It&#8217;s pretty typical at these kinds of shows,&#8221; Piché said. &#8220;I didn&#8217;t really know what to expect, but I definitely didn&#8217;t expect to be in a hospital after the concert. I have a long road ahead, but I&#8217;m very optimistic right now,&#8221; she added. 
&#8220;Nothing is certain, obviously, but they are predicting l will have full recovery of everything.” 
Mohawk Place said in a <a href="https://people.com/woman-partially-paralyzed-after-singer-stage-dives-at-new-york-concert-8647340">statement</a> to People Magazine that the venue has a strict no stage diving and no crowd surfing policy. 
A facility rep said, &#8220;There are signs posted everywhere in the venue and notice was included in the emails for this show with the show&#8217;s promoter and the band themselves. Our policy and practiced procedure is a full show stop for any stage diving which was put into place for this incident.&#8221;
A GoFundMe page, which was set up by a family friend, also provided details about Piché’s current condition. 
“She has a long recovery ahead and will need all the help she can get. It is still too early to know what her prognosis is but after leaving the hospital she will need to go to a rehab facility. She will obviously not be able to work during this time,” the fundraiser says.
“Bird recently began running and in the featured photo she had placed second in her age group! We will update with details according to her comfort level. The funds will be used for medical bills and anything she may need to function in life because of the accident.”

The band wrote in a <a href="https://twitter.com/trophyeyesmusic/status/1786422806105801122">statement</a> just after the incident that they were “truly heartbroken” over what happened. 
“We elected to immediately shut down the show as [band member] John accompanied them to the hospital with their family,” the social media post added, directing followers to Piché’s GoFundMe page.

Police in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/new-york" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York</a> praised a man who broke into a school to shelter travelers stranded during last week’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/more-than-50-people-dead-during-extreme-winter-weather-across-u-s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">winter storm</a> that left dozens dead. 
Jay Withey, of Cheektowaga, New York, broke into a local school during the storm in order to shelter 24 people who had been left stuck in their cars in the Buffalo suburb due to inclement weather. 
Withey, who left a note at the school apologizing for any damage caused by his actions, was praised by police, who called his actions heroic and credited him with saving lives. 
“We identified the amazing Jay with the help of his friends and family! Our Chief was able to speak to him and express our gratitude for his heroic actions,” the Cheektowaga Police said in a statement.

Withey, 27, was stranded alongside dozens of others along Delavan Avenue in Cheektowaga on December 23 when he broke into a nearby school and went from car to car inviting them to come inside for shelter as cars were blocked due to snow and ice. 
&#8220;I said I have to do something there&#8217;s other people stuck around here,&#8221; Withey <a href="https://www.wkbw.com/news/local-news/blizzard-of-22/cheektowaga-man-known-as-merry-christmas-jay-is-hailed-a-hero" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> WBEN radio. &#8220;I know there is. We can&#8217;t be the only ones stuck. So I told her I&#8217;m going to break into the school.&#8221;
Withey repeatedly went out looking for stranded travelers, saying it was “God’s will” that he broke into the school to save others. 
&#8220;Like I said, I walked til I cried,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I walked til I couldn&#8217;t walk anymore.&#8221;
Once inside the school, Withey and others were able to stay warm and find food to sustain themselves until it was safe to leave. Police praised Withey and the others for their actions in taking care of each other and not trashing the school&#8217;s facilities during their stay.
“We watched the video surveillance and witnessed people taking care of people. There was a freezer full of food but no one touched it. They only ate what was necessary to stay alive. They used the gym for the kids to play and pulled the smart boards out of the classrooms to watch the news for updates,” they said in a Facebook post aimed at identifying Withey.

The death toll in Erie County, which contains Buffalo, New York, <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2022/12/28/buffalo-winter-storm-deaths-reaches-34-why-death-toll-so-high/10961199002/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has risen to 37</a> from the blizzard that struck the area late last week.
<a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2022/12/29/buffalo-blizzard-deaths-victims-how-they-died/10964288002/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">According</a> to Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, 17 people were found dead outside; nine died in homes lacking heat; four were found dead in a vehicle; four died of heart-related issues from shoveling or snow blowing and three people died when emergency medical services were delayed. 29 of the deaths occurred in the city of Buffalo. Local officials have been criticized for not implementing a travel ban earlier; Erie County issued a travel ban at roughly 9 a.m. Friday, but many people were already on their way to work.
“I think a travel ban should have been put in place a lot earlier,” Buffalo EMT Felicia Williams told <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2022/12/27/buffalo-storm-blizzard-warnings/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Washington Post</a>.
On Thursday, Poloncarz acknowledged that listing a weather event as capable of “extreme impact” had only occurred twice during his time in his position.
Erie County Sheriff John Garcia said that his initial reaction to reports of a “bomb cyclone “ was “this is something that we are used to.” He acknowledged later, “I’ve never seen anything like this before.”
Meteorologist Reed Timmer stated simply, “Worst blizzard I have ever covered.”

Days before the storm hit, Mark Wysocki, professor of atmospheric sciences at Cornell University, had <a href="https://www.syracuse.com/weather/2022/12/another-winter-storm-likely-to-slam-upstate-ny-just-in-time-for-christmas-travel.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">warned</a>, “It could be another one of these messes where we get this ice, freezing rain and snow. We could have a lot of issues with travel and downed power lines.”
One 63-year-old woman who needed to be connected to an electric oxygen machine lost heat and power in her home. According to <a href="https://buffalonews.com/news/local/buffalo-family-shelters-strangers-body-at-their-h%5B%e2%80%a6%5Dshe-dies-in/article_68dbbef2-863f-11ed-9d64-4b93014dd101.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Buffalo News</a>, she could not access emergency services because of the blizzard. Her son and his stepbrother traveled from Cheektowaga to her home in Lovejoy, New York, and attempted to take her to their car, but she was too tired.
“She’s like, ‘I can’t go no further.’ I’m begging her, ‘Mom, just stand up.’ She fell in my arms and never spoke another word,” her son recalled.  After her son pounded in nearby homes for help, one couple let him and his mother in, but the woman died anyway.

A 22-year-old woman was found dead on Christmas Eve after being trapped inside her car for nearly a day during the historic blizzard in Buffalo, New York, last weekend.
Anndel Taylor of Charlotte, North Carolina, was driving home from work on Friday afternoon when her car became stranded in the snowstorm for at least 18 hours, according to local media. The young woman had moved back to Buffalo, where she was born, earlier this year to care for her father after living in Charlotte with her family for the last two decades.
Wanda Brown Steele, Taylor&#8217;s mother, told WSOC she believes her daughter died from carbon monoxide poisoning rather than hypothermia. However, the official cause of death is still unknown.
&#8220;The car was running, and the snow was still coming, so it blocked the pipes, the exhaust pipe,&#8221; Wanda Brown Steele, Taylor&#8217;s mother, told <a href="https://www.wsoctv.com/news/local/charlotte-woman-dies-after-getting-stuck-new-york-snowstorm/N5HF2CR76RA4HPABI53KRWMYOY/">WSOC</a>. &#8220;Then, after the car cut off, that&#8217;s when she iced up.&#8221;
Steele told the outlet her daughter called 911 emergency services for assistance and planned to sleep during the blizzard and then walk home. But with more than 40 inches of snow pummeling western New York over the Christmas weekend, authorities could not reach Taylor in what Gov. Kathy Hochul called &#8220;the blizzard of the century.&#8221;
The mother alerted relatives in Buffalo to search for Taylor.
&#8220;That&#8217;s when they busted open the window and seen that she was in there,&#8221; Steele said, according to <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/12/27/anndel-taylor-22-dies-after-getting-stuck-in-buffalo-snowstorm/">The New York Post</a>.
Shawnequa Brown, Taylor&#8217;s sister, told WCOS that she &#8220;was telling my sister that she was scared.&#8221;
While Taylor waited inside her vehicle, she sent her family two videos showing the gravity of her situation, showing her car windshields covered in snow and then slightly rolling down her window to show the treacherous weather conditions.
Taylor became one of at least 28 people killed in what some reports indicated the storm was the worst blizzard to hit Buffalo in 45 years, coming close to a blizzard that hit the city in 1977 and killed nearly 30 people.
Although the winter storm that struck the city ended on Christmas morning, officials fear the death toll will rise.
Sylvia Taylor, Taylor&#8217;s grandmother, told WSOC-TV: &#8220;It&#8217;s so easy to ask yourself, &#8216;Why, God? Why?&#8221;
&#8220;But it&#8217;s not always meant for us to know the answer to that,&#8221; she said.
Family members told The Post that Taylor&#8217;s 23rd birthday was coming soon.
She &#8220;still got presents under the tree&#8221; for Christmas,&#8221; Shawnequa Brown said.
Brown called her sister &#8220;the golden child … The funniest, the realist, the hoodest little sister ever!&#8221;
&#8220;I&#8217;m so so so sorry, I would do anything to have been there with you,&#8221; she wrote, according to The Post.

Because of the icy conditions, first responders had difficulty reaching people who needed medical attention or were stranded in their cars. Looters ransacked and damaged upstate New York businesses over the weekend as deadly extreme winter weather and low temperatures froze local authorities from performing regular patrols.
New York State Police reportedly responded to claims across social media that some businesses had their windows smashed and merchandise damaged and stolen in the City of Buffalo as at least 27 have been <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/26/weather/arctic-winter-storm-new-york-blizzard-monday/index.html">reported dead</a> in New York alone after a massive snowstorm.
Local media reported that such stores include all Wegmans and Tops locations in Erie County, which have been closed since Friday due to the &#8220;once in a generation&#8221; storm.
Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown told reporters Monday the looters taking advantage of the unsupervised stores were &#8220;the lowest of the low.&#8221;
&#8220;I don&#8217;t know how these people can even live with themselves, how they can look at themselves in the mirror,&#8221; Mayor Brown said.
Brown added that the people who were out looting when others lost their lives in the harsh winter storm were &#8220;absolutely reprehensible.&#8221;
&#8220;And from some of the pictures that we&#8217;ve seen on social media of these looters, they&#8217;re not looting foods and medicines, they&#8217;re just looting items that they want,&#8221; the mayor said. &#8220;So these aren&#8217;t even people in distress — these are people who are taking advantage of a national disaster and the suffering of many in our community to take what they want.&#8221;
Two civilians spoke to a local <a href="https://www.wgrz.com/video/news/reports-of-looting-in-buffalo/71-871b4265-40ce-4b71-9bd0-271271e57cae">NBC affiliate</a> about the recent looting.
&#8220;It&#8217;s not about a need,&#8221; one source said. &#8220;It was a storm for one day — it&#8217;s not about a need.&#8221;
&#8220;Exactly,&#8221; the other source said. &#8220;They took TV sets.
New York State Police Superintendent Steven A. Nigrelli told local media authorities were dispatched to two confirmed reports of looting incidents.
&#8220;Those are still under investigation as we speak,&#8221; Nigrelli said. &#8220;Those are isolated incidents, and it&#8217;s not reflective of the great community of Western New York, and I&#8217;m sure that they&#8217;ll be limited to those two incidents — or at least that&#8217;s our hope.&#8221;
Local media reported City Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said authorities had made a &#8220;few&#8221; arrests related to looting over the weekend.
&#8220;We&#8217;ve been able to — throughout the storm — transition our patrol officers to get back [to] their patrol efforts while we have our search and rescue recovery teams that are going out and doing the very difficult work of recovering bodies,&#8221; Gramaglia said, according to <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/12/26/looters-ransack-snowbound-buffalo-as-cops-are-stuck-elsewhere/?utm_source=NYPTwitter&amp;utm_campaign=SocialFlow&amp;utm_medium=SocialFlow">The New York Post</a>.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul released a statement regarding price gouging, yet another side effect of the once-in-a-century winter storm, as reported by local media.
&#8220;Price gouging is illegal, &#8220;Hochul <a href="https://www.wivb.com/news/local-news/buffalo/buffalo-mayor-looters-during-blizzard-are-lowest-of-the-low/">said</a>. &#8220;We have the attorney general&#8217;s office and our state is prepared to investigate any complaints of price gouging. Those who engage in this disgusting practice at a time when people in our community are hurting, when they&#8217;re trying so hard to get basic necessities, there&#8217;s a scarcity because stores have been closed since Friday, then shame on them. And they&#8217;re going to meet the law in a way they probably didn&#8217;t encounter. We&#8217;re going to be going after them.&#8221;
&#8220;The Department of Financial Services is engaging the insurance industry,&#8221; Hochul added, &#8220;making sure we have claims adjusters on the ground to help people who&#8217;ve had damage. Whether it&#8217;s the weight of snow on their roofs, whether it&#8217;s water damage &#8230; we want to make sure people know we&#8217;ll get help to them as soon as possible.&#8221;
New York officials implemented travel bans in Buffalo and surrounding areas, urging drivers to stay off the roads for emergency services to have a clear and passable route.
Hochul further noted that anyone whole violates the law &#8220;will be ticketed,&#8221; while members of the National Guard will be stopping drivers in areas where bans are in place.

“I&#8217;m not asking. I&#8217;m not pleading. Because of the frozen roads, ambulances had a difficult time reaching some people suffering from medical emergencies. Over 20,000 people reportedly lost power during the storm.
More than 29,000 households still had no power, 20,000 of them in Buffalo alone. Some power substations were frozen over; one even had an 18-foot snow drift blocking it.

The Buffalo Police Department&#8217;s Ferry-Fillmore district station welcomed people to warm themselves, as did Cleveland Hill High School, where roughly 200 people came.
“It is heartbreaking that people are driving,” Brown said, adding that some people were “out sightseeing.”
“This is a major disaster. It is not the Christmas that we wanted,” Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said. He also said that that with conventional snow-removal equipment was unable to clear some snow drifts, which rose as high as eight feet.

The city of Buffalo, New York, filed a lawsuit against several gun manufacturers on Tuesday following a mass shooting earlier this year that left 10 people dead.
Mayor Byron Brown, a Democrat-turned-independent, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/city-buffalo-files-kind-lawsuit-gun-industry/story?id=95615548" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> the suit was filed in the state Supreme Court and the defendants include Smith &amp; Wesson, Bushmaster, Colts, Glock, Beretta, and Remington. The lawsuit was filed in the state Supreme Court.
A<a href="https://www.buffalony.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=1185"> news release</a> pointed to the racially motivated mass shooting at a Buffalo grocery store in May. Last month, the male suspect <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/28/nyregion/buffalo-shooting-guilty-plea.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pleaded</a> guilty to charges brought against him, which <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/28/us/buffalo-tops-grocery-shooting-payton-gendron-plea/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">included</a> first-degree murder, attempted murder, a domestic act of terrorism motivated by hate, and weapons possession.
&#8220;Members of our community have suffered too much for too long from gun violence,&#8221; Brown said at a press conference on Tuesday. &#8220;We must do everything we can to decrease gun violence. Enabling the possession of illegal guns destroys lives and deeply affects our neighborhood, especially in black and brown communities.”
The mayor described the lawsuit as “another proactive strategy that we are utilizing in Buffalo to keep our community safe.” 
“We have state public nuisance laws that we are empowered to enforce, and I intend on doing all that I can as Mayor to protect people and prevent the loss of lives resulting from gun violence,” Brown said. “The conduct of certain gun manufacturers has unreasonably interfered with the public’s right to use open space free from fear.”
The <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/23487757-buffalo-v-gun-manufacturers?responsive=1&amp;title=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lawsuit</a> alleges that the defendants’ “actions have created, maintained, or contributed to a condition in the City of Buffalo that endangers the safety and health of the public.” It also added that the gun industry “manufactured or distributed thousands of firearms recovered in crimes committed in the City of Buffalo and New York State.” 
It seeks damages and for the defendants “to endow an abatement fund with sufficient capital to eliminate the public nuisance they are responsible for creating, exacerbating, and/or perpetuating.”
One of the defendants, Bushmaster, responded in a statement to CNN.
“We have not had a chance to review the allegations in full at this time, but upon first blush, the verified allegations against Bushmaster Firearms Industries, Inc. are false,” Bushmaster said. “Our counsel is currently reviewing the complaint and evaluating a path forward to address both this lawsuit and the potentially libelous claims made against Bushmaster Firearms Industries, Inc.”

The 19-year-old man, whom The Daily Wire will not name in accordance with a policy of depriving mass shooters of undeserved notoriety, pleaded guilty to all charges in the grand jury indictment, including murder, murder as a hate crime, and hate-motivated domestic terrorism, according to a <a href="https://apnews.com/article/buffalo-supermarket-shooting-crime-shootings-race-and-ethnicity-4a4dcf6e12c598d1f0a372227760b93f?taid=6384d7b553703a000196316e&amp;utm_campaign=TrueAnthem&amp;utm_medium=AP&amp;utm_source=Twitter" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> from the Associated Press.
Law enforcement officials <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/buffalo-mass-shooting-suspect-had-been-flagged-as-troubled-a-year-ago-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> the suspect, who allegedly drove three-and-a-half hours from Broome County, New York, to the Tops Friendly Market because it is frequented by African-Americans, was on authorities’ radar after allegedly threatening fellow high school students last year. “A school official reported that this very troubled young man had made statements indicating that he wanted to do a shooting, either at a graduation ceremony, or sometime after,” a government official familiar with the case <a href="https://buffalonews.com/news/local/mass-shooter-accused-of-pure-evil-killing-of-10-in-buffalo-hate-crime-named-in/article_f9ef9bac-d3d9-11ec-9eaf-cbcafe308f9c.html#tracking-source=home-top-story" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> The Buffalo News.
The shooter allegedly arrived at the grocery store on May 14 wearing tactical gear and carrying a rifle, shooting four people outside before entering the building. He allegedly shot eight more people while inside and killed security guard and former Buffalo police officer Aaron Salter, who attempted to stop him. The gunman allegedly live-streamed the murder spree on Twitch using a camera strapped to his helmet.
The charge of hate-motivated domestic terrorism requires an automatic sentence of life without parole. The shooter reportedly painted a number of <a href="https://www.adl.org/resources/blog/buffalo-shooters-weapons-covered-white-supremacist-messaging" target="_blank" rel="noopener">racist symbols</a> and phrases onto the weapons he carried during the attack, including the phrase “White Lives Matter,” the Celtic Cross symbol used by neo-Nazis, and references to “black-on-white” crimes.
&#8220;The past 24 hours have been traumatizing for New Yorkers, and my administration will spare no effort to ensure the victims of this act of terrorism by a white supremacist are receiving all the resources and support they need,&#8221; Governor Kathy Hochul (D-NY) said in a <a href="https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-hochul-announces-state-resources-available-buffalo-community-response-horrific" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> after the shooting. &#8220;The entire world is watching how we will come together as New Yorkers to overcome this unthinkable tragedy.”
Hochul has since <a href="https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-hochul-announces-actions-prevent-hate-crimes-and-protect-new-yorkers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> a number of measures “taking bold action to reclaim our city and state from the haters, bigots and white supremacists,” including the promotion of $50 million in grants for projects to combat hate crimes.
The shooter posted a manifesto online detailing his intentions to livestream an attack against African-Americans, according to an earlier <a href="https://apnews.com/article/buffalo-supermarket-shooting-19514b0c6524bd428f4167ad9b490a12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> from the Associated Press. He had allegedly scouted the store two months before the attack, practiced shooting from his car, posted hand-drawn maps of the grocery store, and counted the number of African-Americans present at certain locations in the building.
Ahead of the attack, the shooter allegedly communicated with at least six individuals in a chatroom. One <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/retired-federal-agent-in-texas-may-have-known-in-advance-of-buffalo-mass-shooting-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> from The Buffalo Times indicated that a retired federal agent was present in the chatroom and may have known about the shooting half an hour in advance. The outlet was unable to determine if the retired agent accepted the invitation to the chat in which the shooter wrote about his plan, but federal law enforcement verified that no one who regularly visited the chatroom called emergency services to warn of the pending massacre.

New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency Wednesday afternoon, announcing that the New York State Thruway would be closed to commercial traffic as of Thursday afternoon from Rochester to the Pennsylvania state line.

Officials issued warnings regarding the extreme weather conditions, with offices and schools closing across the area.
&#8220;Despite the unseasonably warm weather of late, winter is here across upstate New York. Do not underestimate this storm. We expect snow to be intense at times creating dangerous conditions and significant accumulation to occur over the event. Now is the time to get prepared and have a plan,&#8221; New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Commissioner Jackie Bray said in the governor&#8217;s statement regarding the emergency declaration.
&#8220;New Yorkers in the affected area who must travel later this week, should take it slow and build in extra time for your commute. And we should all check on our neighbors, particularly vulnerable neighbors, to help them prepare for winter weather in the forecast,&#8221; he added.

With up to four feet of snow expected before kickoff, the two teams could relive the memories of their 2007 &#8220;Snow Bowl.&#8221; Yardage markers were nearly unreadable in the blizzard-like conditions that ended with the Browns <a href="https://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/top-75-moments-no-70-phil-dawson-browns-survive-2007-snow-game-vs-bills" target="_blank" rel="noopener">winning</a> 8-0 and no touchdowns were scored. Only two field goals and one safety were recorded.
