On Thursday, Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the shooting death of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan on December 4, was <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2025/04/17/us/luigi-mangione-indicted-federal-charges" target="_blank" rel="noopener">indicted</a> in federal court on a charge of murder, which could permit him to be executed.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said earlier this month that the Department of Justice would seek the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ag-directs-federal-prosecutors-to-seek-death-penalty-for-luigi-mangione" target="_blank" rel="noopener">death penalty</a> for Mangione.
“Luigi Mangione’s murder of Brian Thompson — an innocent man and father of two young children — was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America,” she <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/attorney-general-pamela-bondi-directs-prosecutors-seek-death-penalty-luigi-mangione" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stated</a>. “After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out President Trump’s agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again.”
“As alleged, Luigi Mangione stalked and murdered UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson on Dec. 4, 2024,” the DOJ declared. “The murder was an act of political violence. Mangione’s actions involved substantial planning and premeditation and because the murder took place in public with bystanders nearby, may have posed grave risk of death to additional persons.&#8221;
&#8220;Following federal murder charges handed down on Dec. 19, 2024, Attorney General Bondi has now directed Acting U.S. Attorney Matthew Podolsky to seek the death penalty in this case,&#8221; the DOJ added.
The homemade gun that Mangione carried when he was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, matched shell casings found at the crime scene, according to authorities. In addition, investigators said that Mangione’s fingerprints matched the ones investigators found on items near the scene.
“First, we got the gun in question back from Pennsylvania. It’s now at the NYPD crime lab,” NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/11/us/unitedhealthcare-ceo-brian-thompson-shooter-wednesday/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “We were able to match that gun to the three shell casings that we found in Midtown at the scene of the homicide. We’re also at the crime lab able to match the person of interest’s fingerprints with fingerprints that we found on both the water bottle and the KIND bar near the scene of the homicide in midtown.”
When he was captured, Mangione had in his possession a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/11/nyregion/luigi-mangione-assassination-plan-notebook.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">notebook</a> that described Thompson’s assassination, which occurred as Thompson, a father of two sons, was en route to the UnitedHealth Group&#8217;s Investors Conference. One passage in the notebook mentioned taking out “the CEO at the annual parasitic bean-counter convention.”
“It’s targeted, precise, and doesn’t risk innocents,” Mangione allegedly wrote in the notebook, CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/11/us/unitedhealthcare-ceo-brian-thompson-shooter-wednesday/index.html">reported</a>. Police also recovered a manifesto where Mangione allegedly called out “United,” adding, “To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone.”
The charges indicting Mangione include one count of murder with a firearm, another firearms offense, and two counts of stalking. The charge of murder through the use of a firearm has a maximum sentence of death if Mangione is convicted. The state of Pennsylvania, where Mangione was arrested, has also brought charges against Mangione. He was caught at a McDonald&#8217;s in Altoona after police spent nearly a week searching for him.
Mangione was celebrated by some; the audience at a Saturday Night Live show, roughly two weeks after Thompson’s death, cheered when his name was mentioned.

He’s a person who seems like he’s this morally good man, which is hard to find.&#8221;
She tried to explain her assessment in greater detail to Hannity.
&#8220;What I&#8217;m describing, and if you watch the full segment, not just the clip, you&#8217;ll see that I&#8217;m just describing the mentality of these fangirls [who] show up outside Luigi&#8217;s court and show up outside his jail cell. Those girls are not me, OK? We have very separate belief systems. But I was describing how they believe,&#8221; she said.
But when Hannity pressed her, several times, to either condemn Mangione&#8217;s alleged actions or others&#8217; calls for assassinations, Lorenz deflected — and at one point, she joked, &#8220;Gosh, you&#8217;re gonna ask if I condemn Hamas next. This is insane!&#8221;
Hannity repeated his prompt several times, but Lorenz continued to pivot, complaining, &#8220;You want to talk about the assassination of innocent people? I believe that the tens of thousands of Americans [who] die each year because of the lack of health insurance. That is, to me, a violence in itself. That is assassination.&#8221;
Hannity tried once more, asking if those cheering on the death of another human being — a husband and a father — lacked &#8220;a soul, a conscience and a heart.&#8221;
&#8220;Well, what I will say, Sean, once again, is that I believe in free speech. I don&#8217;t believe in things like, you know, religious things like souls and all of these things.&#8221;

Lorenz, who was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ex-wapo-reporter-taylor-lorenz-says-united-healthcare-ceos-murder-brought-her-joy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previously blasted</a> for saying that she&#8217;d felt &#8220;joy&#8221; when she heard that Thompson had been gunned down — and then, while attempting to walk that back slightly, simultaneously argued that insurance companies that delayed or denied coverage were guilty of murder. &#8220;Maybe not joy, but certainly not — certainly not empathy,&#8221; she said, shocking show host Piers Morgan and her fellow guests.
Lorenz followed that up with an appearance Sunday on CNN&#8217;s &#8220;MisinfoNation&#8221; with host Donie O&#8217;Sullivan, where she laughed off the people who seem obsessed with Mangione and claimed it was because he seemed to be a &#8220;morally good man&#8221; — and mocked the people who were shocked that anyone would look at an alleged murderer as a hero.

One point of agreement, for both O&#8217;Sullivan and Lorenz, was their belief that the people raving over Mangione and supporters of President Donald Trump were no different.

On March 31, local activist Ian Seaman made reference to Luigi Mangione, who allegedly gunned down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City in December.
“It’s one thing to say we don’t want rainbow flags in our schools and to have the people that you pay $60,000 a year in journalism salary to, to repeat the talking points. It’s another thing to pay $60,000 a year, which is a teacher’s salary, to a Republican action committee, or anything like that. “Seaman claimed to be upset over school policy on hanging gay pride flags in classrooms,” Michigan Capitol Confidential <a href="https://www.michigancapitolconfidential.com/news/trustee-vows-to-stay-on-after-apparent-threat-at-grosse-pointe-school-board-meeting" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. “It’s unacceptable to make thinly veiled threats to anybody regardless of status. That’s unacceptable. I’m sorry that happened to you, Trustee Cotton,” board member Clint Derringer reacted.
“I’m really taken aback by what just happened at that microphone regarding a person and a public servant,” Dr. Andrea Turtle declared. “And I would hope that all of you, regardless of your opinions, realize we are people first. And that was completely scary, and I’m shocked that it’s not being addressed differently, quite frankly, at this board, and that we’ve overlooked that, because it’s really hard for me to focus on anything but that, because that could be any one of us.”
“While he did not explicitly mention my background in healthcare, it is clear he had done his homework, and I believe he likely knew of my former role,” Cotton told Michigan Capitol Confidential. “He ranted about my ownership of our community’s local newspaper, my political donations, and was clearly very angry and agitated about my participation in the democratic process.”
“While the incident was unsettling, it will not deter me from continuing to serve the Grosse Pointe community,” Cotton continued. “I sought this role to help preserve and strengthen our public schools, championing academic excellence, fiscal responsibility, and long-term stability. That mission remains as important to me today as ever.”
“I believe deeply in democracy and in the importance of representative government,” Cotton asserted. “These are the bedrock principles of our nation. To serve in an elected role is both an honor and a responsibility. Threats and intimidation cannot be allowed to silence public servants or any citizen who chooses to participate in civic life.”
Seaman claimed his comments weren’t a threat. “I explicitly said I would never do that,” Seaman told Michigan Capitol Confidential. “I am not (Mangione). But if we keep not listening to people and what they need, we are in an environment where someone could do something drastic. That should be a scary thought for everyone.”
“What you saw Monday at the school board meeting was appalling but sadly predictable,” Matthew J. Wilk, president of Get Kids Back to School Inc, stated. &#8220;Progressive political organizations have been pushing that a reversion to a traditional view of sex, one that has been understood on this planet for thousands of years, is somehow ‘violence’ against those with gender dysphoria. It isn’t.”
Regarding Seaman’s rhetoric, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s Press Secretary, Daniel Wimmer, commented, “Whether a threat was effectuated would require some degree of investigation that I am unable to conduct, via email as the press secretary for the department. If you or anyone else believe a crime has been committed, we would encourage you to contact local law enforcement or your nearest Michigan State Police post.”

California residents may soon have the chance to vote on a measure that would restrict insurance companies from denying coverage — an initiative named after the man who gunned down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a New York City street.
The proposed “Luigi Mangione Act” has already found its way to the California attorney general’s desk, according to local outlet <a href="https://ktla.com/news/california/proposed-california-ballot-initiative-luigi-mangione-act-would-make-it-harder-for-insurers-to-deny-medical-care/">KTLA</a>. If enacted, it would then be illegal for insurance companies to “delay, deny or modify any medical procedure or medication” prescribed by California doctors if failure to implement such treatments could result in “disability, death, amputation, permanent disfigurement, loss or reduction of any bodily function.”
The measure would also limit modifications to such treatments to licensed physicians, and make it illegal for anyone other than another licensed physician to review or modify them.
Insurance companies, in order to deny coverage for anything, would have to prove “by clear and convincing evidence that the medication or procedure was unnecessary or would not result in disability, death, amputation, permanent disfigurement or the loss or reduction of any bodily function.”
A number of critics took issue with the initiative, primarily because it was being named after a murderer.

A comedian named Tim Dillon dressed up as the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/assassination">murdered</a> <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/unitedhealthcare">UnitedHealthcare</a> CEO Brian Thompson and pretended to read nasty text messages from hell.
The 39-year-old <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/comedian">comedian</a> did the bit as part of the Netflix special “Torching 2024: A Roast of the Year,” which was released on Friday.
Dillon put on a navy blue sweater, a light blue collared shirt, and tan khakis to match an outfit Thompson was wearing in the photo that’s been making the rounds online. The comedian also had fake blood splatter and chains around his neck when he stepped onto the stage at The Bellwether in Los Angeles, per the <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/12/27/us-news/comedian-tim-dillon-plays-ghost-of-unitedhealthcare-ceo-brian-thompson-in-netflix-roast/">New York Post</a>.
Fans laughed as Dillon started his set in front of a large sign that said, “UnitedHellcare CEO.” 
“I’m going to hell for this, you might as well laugh,” Dillon began.
 The comedian pretended to be Thompson and told the crowd he had been reading tweets from people happy he was dead.
“Your reaction to my murder makes me sick … and not the type of sick I would immediately deny for not having the proper paperwork,” the comedian said, referencing denied healthcare claims. 
“The truth is, without people like me, f***ing over people like you, to help people like me, this country would fall apart and that’s on you,” Dillon added.
The comedian next focused on the topic of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/luigi-mangione">Luigi Mangione</a>, the man who was charged with Thompson’s murder.
“Look at yourselves dancing in the streets because that guy Tortellini Mozzarella took me by surprise like an unexpected medical bill and shot me in the back,” Dillon joked. “Apparently he had his own back problems. I’m sorry Luigi but nobody feels bad for a thin guy with back problems. Claim denied!”
Dillon ended his set by saying. “Deny, defend, decompose,” referencing the fact that the bullet casings found at the crime scene allegedly said, “Deny Defend Depose.” 
Cast members on “SNL” were criticized for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/snl-slammed-for-making-jokes-about-murder-of-unitedhealthcare-ceo">making jokes</a> about Thompson’s death just days after it happened. Prominent figures including former Washington Post reporter Taylor Lorenz have also come under fire for making positive comments about the assassination.

Prosecutors are throwing the book at suspected UnitedHealthcare CEO assassin Luigi Mangione as a grand jury indicted him this week on terrorism charges.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg argued that the killing of Brian Thompson on December 4 &#8220;was intended to cause shock and attention and intimidation.&#8221; Bragg announced on Tuesday that Mangione is being charged with “murder in the first degree as a killing in furtherance of terrorism” along with “two counts of murder in the second degree,” one of which accuses Mangione of killing Thompson in an &#8220;act of terrorism.&#8221;
A first-degree murder charge in New York is rare as it requires the victim to be a witness, judge, or police officer, or for the killing to be a murder-for-hire or a murder with intent to commit terrorism. The maximum sentence for first-degree murder is life in prison without parole.
“This was a frightening, well-planned, targeted murder that was intended to cause shock and attention and intimidation,” Bragg said. “It occurred at one of the most bustling parts of our city, threatening the safety of local residents and tourists alike.”
Upon his arrest in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on December 9, police allegedly found a notebook on Mangione that includes a passage where the writer mentions taking out “the CEO at the annual parasitic bean-counter convention.” Mangione also allegedly had a manifesto on him that accused UnitedHealthcare of prioritizing profit over patients. Law enforcement believes Mangione was motivated by anger with the U.S. healthcare system. Bragg <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2024/12/17/act-of-terrorism-murder-charge-luigi-mangione/77054556007/">claims</a> that Mangione &#8220;intended to evoke terror&#8221; with the killing.
Prosecutors allege that Mangione &#8220;intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population&#8221; and to &#8220;affect the conduct of a unit of government by murder,&#8221; according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/17/nyregion/mangione-first-degree-murder-terrorism.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The New York Times</a>. How the murder of Thompson &#8220;affect[s] the conduct of a unit of government&#8221; wasn&#8217;t immediately clear as Thompson worked for a private healthcare company. The Daily Wire reached out to the Manhattan District Attorney&#8217;s Office for clarification on the charges.
A law passed in New York shortly after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, allows prosecutors to tack on terrorism charges to certain crimes if they&#8217;re “intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, influence the policies of a unit of government by intimidation or coercion and affect the conduct of a unit of government by murder, assassination or kidnapping,&#8221; according to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/unitedhealthcare-ceo-killing-luigi-mangione-fccc9e875e976b9901a122bc15669425" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Associated Press</a>. The FBI uses the <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2024/12/17/act-of-terrorism-murder-charge-luigi-mangione/77054556007/">same</a> definition for domestic terrorism. The New York law was first used by prosecutors in 2002 on a Bronx gang member who killed a young girl and paralyzed a rival gang member in a hail of gunfire outside a christening party. A decade later, New York&#8217;s highest court ruled that the gang member was not a terrorist, and he was retried and convicted on other charges.
Some legal experts expressed skepticism over the prosecution&#8217;s chances to convict Mangione on the terrorism charges. Anna Cominsky, director of the criminal defense clinic at New York Law School, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/17/nyregion/mangione-first-degree-murder-terrorism.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the Times that accusing Mangione of committing terrorism seems abnormal in this case because “this isn’t traditionally how we think of terrorism.”

Former federal prosecutor Jessica Roth <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/18/us/luigi-mangione-murder-indictment-new-york/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> CNN&#8217;s Anderson Cooper that &#8220;by including&#8221; the terrorism charges, &#8220;the district attorney is setting up the conditions for a plea to a lesser charge where he has the possibility of, at some point, getting out of prison.&#8221;
“If there isn’t a plea, it’s also setting up the condition for a jury compromise on that lesser charge,&#8221; Roth added.

Murphy, who mocked President-elect Donald Trump over the summer as “ridiculous” and “reckless” during the presidential campaign, released a video on Sunday in which he demagogued the issue of violence against the heads of insurance companies.
“Listen, I think that political leaders in this country need to be part of this conversation that’s happening all over the country in the wake of the shooting of the United Healthcare CEO,” he declared. Then, patting himself on the back, he continued. “I know that it’s fraught; I know that it’s uncomfortable, but this is really important.”
“Listen, I’m never going to condone violence; I don’t here,” he stated. “I spend my entire life fighting gun violence because I know that the devastation is enormous that it leaves behind. What I see happening in this country, though, is a real visceral anger, that the outrage at Brian Thompson’s death, or the outrage at the death of any powerful person, isn’t matched by the anger over the thousands of people who die often anonymous deaths every single day in this country at the hands of a healthcare industry that mostly doesn’t give a sh** about people, and only care about profits.”

Why do millions of Americans know this? Because the business model of the healthcare industry is to deny care, necessary medical care, to people who need it, and force them into bankruptcy or worse, let them die in order to grow profit. There are a ton of good people in the healthcare industry: nurses, doctors. But that’s an immoral system.&#8221;
Then he launched into his diatribe: “Watching people die, ruining families financially to pad profits and make money for the people who run the biggest companies? Murder is never justified. It isn’t. But if this country’s leaders don’t pay attention to the conversation that’s happening right now, this weekend, that is a mistake.”
“People in America today feel ignored, they feel scared, they feel alone in a system that intentionally grinds them down. A system where profit matters more than life. My colleagues need to listen, and we need to do something about it,” he concluded.

Sanders made the remarks during a Sunday NBC News interview with Kristen Welker on &#8220;Meet The Press&#8221; when asked about remarks from Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), who responded to the assassination by saying &#8220;you can only push people so far and then they start to take matters into their own hands.&#8221;
&#8220;Is this the right time in the wake of this horrific murder to be talking about health care policy?&#8221; Welker asked.
&#8220;Elizabeth Warren obviously understands killing and murder and shooting somebody in the back is totally unacceptable,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But what I think has happened in the last few months is that what you have seen rising up is people&#8217;s anger at a health insurance industry which denies people the health care that they desperately need while they make billions and billions of dollars in profit.&#8221;

San Francisco police identified the man accused of assassinating United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City last week several days before he was caught at a McDonald&#8217;s in Pennsylvania.
The news comes as authorities claimed that 26-year-old Luigi Mangione was not previously on law enforcement&#8217;s radar when he was arrested on Monday after a customer at the fast food restaurant recognized him based on photos that had been released by police last week.
Sources <a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/crime/article/luigi-mangione-sfpd-identification-19976578.php">told</a> the San Francisco Chronicle that an officer in the San Francisco Police Department&#8217;s Special Victims Unit recognized Mangione on December 5 as being the person in the photos released by law enforcement.
The officer recognized him because his family contacted the department to report that he had gone missing after they had not heard from him for several months.
The unit reported his identity to the FBI on December 5, the report said, the very day that the photos were released.
It was not clear how the information was passed to the FBI or if the FBI received or acted upon it, the report added.

During the trip he reportedly expressed alarm over how people have become over reliant on things like smart phones and social media, the report said. He also bemoaned capitalism and loved the writings of terrorist Ted Kaczynski, commonly known as the &#8220;Unabomber.&#8221;
Authorities found a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/notebook-found-on-luigi-mangione-describes-assassination-of-unitedhealthcare-ceo-reports">notebook</a> on him after he was arrested that included a passage where the writer mentions taking out “the CEO at the annual parasitic bean-counter convention.” Thompson was gunned down in Midtown Manhattan on December 4 while he was on his way to the UnitedHealth Group’s Investor’s Conference.
“It’s targeted, precise, and doesn’t risk innocents,” Mangione allegedly wrote in the notebook. The suspect considered using a bomb but wrote in his notebook that it “could kill innocents,” CNN reported. According to authorities, Mangione was also in possession of a 262-word manifesto where he allegedly called out “United” and wrote, “To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone.”
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said on Wednesday that a water bottle and Kind snack bar wrapper recovered by police near the crime scene contained fingerprints that match those of Mangione. Tisch also noted that three shell casings recovered at the scene of the crime matched the homemade gun found on Mangione when he was arrested. The 9mm shell casings from the scene of Thompson’s assassination had the words “delay,” “deny,” and “depose” written on them, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny. It was initially reported that the words on the shell casings were “defend,” “deny,” and “depose” before police clarified.
