The conversation began with someone who complained on Twitter that Hollywood studios were appropriating the identities of people who would not have needed such makeup to perform the role, arguing that they should cast only fat actors to play the roles of fat characters.

Some responded to Dove&#8217;s tweet by pointing out the fact that the weight being portrayed in the film was not just unhealthy — it was proving to be lethal for Fraser&#8217;s character.

Actor Brendan Fraser just won his first Academy Award (Best Actor in a Leading Role, &#8220;The Whale&#8221;) — but according to visual effects artist Dave Rand, the &#8220;Encino Man&#8221; star was a &#8220;righteous dude&#8221; long before he picked up that little gold statuette.
Rand told the story in a lengthy tweet, explaining that Fraser had been the one to step up when a studio bankruptcy resulted in his entire visual effects team getting stiffed for three weeks of work on a major film — to the tune of $1.3 million.

&#8220;We had a handful of shots left. As soon as we delivered the last shot, we were escorted out. It was two weeks before Christmas and we&#8217;d soon learn there was no money. Meteor was declaring bankruptcy. They owed us 1.3 million dollars,&#8221; Rand continued — and he said that he immediately contacted the press.
Variety talked to a number of Rand&#8217;s crew but ultimately passed on the story, explaining in an email to Rand, &#8220;The paper has decided that another visual effects company going bankrupt, however sad, is really not news worthy at this time.&#8221;
Rand shopped the story to a number of other outlets in Hollywood, getting similar results every time — and he began to believe that it was coordinated. &#8220;My guess was the studio had put pressure on them to bury it,&#8221; he said.
So he put out a press release himself, which he said only sparked a threatening email and call from Variety and a warning from the labor department, telling him that going to the press could ruin any case they had.
He said that he tried to reach Fraser — the star and producer of the movie — through his people, but failed to make contact.
But then he got a call from entertainment gossip site Page Six, and he jumped at the chance to get the story a <a href="https://pagesix.com/2008/08/01/a-journey-in-search-of-pay/?_ga=1.128297740.1084022795.1394818778" target="_blank" rel="noopener">broader reach</a>. The story went live on August 1, 2008.
&#8220;My phone rang as I was reading the piece, a 212 area code,&#8221; Rand continued, saying that he assumed it was the Page Six reporter who had published the piece. &#8220;I answered to thank the girl, but a man answered and he said, &#8216;Is this Dave Rand?&#8217; I said, &#8216;Yes.&#8217; &#8216;This is Brendan Fraser, what the f*** is going on?&#8217; He had no idea that artists were not paid on his movie. He listened intently, asked a lot of questions and promised he would call me regularly until this was solved.&#8221;
Two days later, Page Six posted an update with a <a href="https://pagesix.com/2008/08/03/to-the-rescue-2/?_ga=1.85880601.1084022795.1394818778" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> from Fraser&#8217;s representative, who said, &#8220;Brendan just heard about this for the first time. He’s on it. He thinks what happened is awful, and he’s extremely upset.&#8221;
&#8220;We finally got 80% of our money almost 2 years later,&#8221; Rand concluded. &#8220;To quote the great Steve Hulett: &#8216;What runs the world isn&#8217;t what&#8217;s right, or who&#8217;s the richest, it&#8217;s leverage, and who has it.&#8217; We&#8217;d had none, but Mr. Fraser gave us wings. He&#8217;s a righteous dude.&#8221;

<a href="https://dailywire.com/news/an-element-of-self-sacrifice-brendan-fraser-says-he-took-on-dangerous-stunts-because-he-felt-he-deserved-a-beating/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fraser</a> — nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his most recent role in Darren Aronofsky&#8217;s &#8220;The Whale&#8221; — sat down with <a href="https://www.gq.com/story/brendan-fraser-men-of-the-year-cover-2022?utm_social-type=owned&amp;utm_brand=gq&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;mbid=social_twitter" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GQ Magazine</a> to discuss his trajectory in Hollywood, and he recalled two brief meetings with the &#8220;Titanic&#8221; star.
The first meeting took place, Fraser recalled, &#8220;when he was I think probably all of, I don’t know, 17, 16 maybe, he did Gilbert &#8216;Grape.&#8217; I saw it on the Paramount lot.&#8221;
DiCaprio earned <a href="https://gamerant.com/leonardo-dicaprio-best-roles-earliest-whats-eating-gilbert-grape/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rave reviews</a> for his complex portrayal of Arnie in that film, the mentally impaired younger brother to Johnny Depp&#8217;s titular character — who spends much of the film getting himself into dangerous situations — and the son of an overweight mother who refused to leave their home. He was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the role.
Fraser, who was just a few years older than DiCaprio, was among the many who took notice of the young actor&#8217;s ability.
&#8220;I think I had just been in &#8216;School Ties&#8217; or something then, and I was, like, flummoxed but I just wanted to tell him, &#8216;Hear, hear. That was incredible,'&#8221; Fraser explained.
It wasn&#8217;t until years later, when the two happened to cross paths again while filming Martin Scorcese&#8217;s &#8220;Killers of the Flower Moon&#8221; — which also stars Robert De Niro and is slated for release in May of 2023 — that Fraser was reminded of that first meeting. DiCaprio, he explained, remembered exactly what he had said all those years ago and said it back to him.
&#8220;He repeated that to me. He remembered me,&#8221; Fraser said. &#8220;He said, &#8216;You were the only guy who didn’t treat me like a little kid.&#8217; He volunteered that to me. That was meaningful.&#8221;

<a href="https://dailywire.com/news/an-element-of-self-sacrifice-brendan-fraser-says-he-took-on-dangerous-stunts-because-he-felt-he-deserved-a-beating/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fraser</a> joined host Kelly Clarkson on her eponymous show on Monday and explained what happened when a hanging sequence that was supposed to happen in the movie came a little bit too close to reality.

Clarkson asked whether it was true that he had nearly died making the movie — and Fraser, laughing, explained that a stunt went a bit too far, and he got &#8220;choked out.&#8221;
&#8220;Well, I was choked out, accidentally. There&#8217;s a hanging sequence —&#8221; Fraser began, referencing a scene near the beginning of the movie when his character, Rick O&#8217;Connell, was sentenced to be hanged — allegedly for having &#8220;a very good time.&#8221;
&#8220;I was standing on my toes, like this, with the rope,&#8221; Fraser said, standing to give a demonstration. &#8220;And, you know, you only got so far to go. And Steve [Sommer] ran over and said, &#8216;Hey, it doesn&#8217;t really look like you&#8217;re choking. Can you sell it?'&#8221;
Fraser agreed, adding, &#8220;So I thought, one more take, man. And the camera swooped around and I went up on the toes, and the guy holding the rope above me, he pulled it up a little higher and I was stuck on my toes. I had nowhere to go but down. So he was pulling up and I was going down.&#8221;
That was when everything went sideways, Fraser continued, saying, &#8220;The next thing I knew, my elbow was in my ear, the world was sideways, and there was gravel in my teeth. And everyone was really quiet.&#8221;
The stunt coordinator was clapping his hands and calling his name, trying to snap him out of it — and when he finally opened his eyes, the coordinator remarked, &#8220;Congratulations, you&#8217;re in the club! Same thing happened to Mel Gibson on &#8216;Braveheart.'&#8221;
Sommer told <a href="https://ew.com/movies/2019/07/23/brendan-fraser-the-mummy-choked-out/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Entertainment Weekly</a> several years ago that Fraser was actually to blame for the mishap, saying that the actor had done too good a job of &#8220;selling it&#8221; that time around.
&#8220;He tightens the noose, and then, as we’re about to get the shot, he’s trying to make it look like it’s really strangling him. I guess it cut off his carotid artery, or whatever, and knocked him out,&#8221; he said.
Fraser conceded the point, saying, &#8220;Technically yes, it was my fault, that I was following direction from my director to sell it &#8230; You know what? To be fair to that remark, I did make one fatal error. I figured before the camera lands on me, I will take three really deep breaths, so my face turns purple and my veins pop out of my neck. I’ll really f***ing sell it, you know! That had to have been a [lesson in how] to asphyxiate yourself. I mean, that had to have been it. So, you know what? In me pointing fingers at Stephen, and vice versa, you got me on that point. I was doing my job to look like a man dangling by his neck about to die. I got to say, what you see in the movie is the take that they did, so they had to cut away, because moments later, I was out of it.&#8221;

Brendan Fraser became emotional while talking about raising his autistic son and said despite struggling with his child&#8217;s diagnosis when he was just 22 months old, he &#8220;wouldn&#8217;t have it any other way.&#8221;
During a recent Sirius XM interview on &#8220;<a href="https://www.howardstern.com">The Howard Stern</a> Show,&#8221; the 54-year-old actor discussed being the father to 20-year-old son Griffin, recalling how he would give autistic people special attention at fan events, <a href="https://people.com/parents/brendan-fraser-gets-emotional-talks-about-son-with-autism/?utm_campaign=peoplemagazine&amp;utm_content=new&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_term=63e2d4311b86500001ad6aaa">People magazine</a> reported.

&#8220;The Whale&#8221; star said it felt like he had been &#8220;hit with a baseball bat in the back of the side of the head,&#8221; and said he started blaming himself over the &#8220;reasons why,&#8221; thinking it was maybe his &#8220;genealogy&#8221; or  because he &#8220;smoked weed in college.&#8221;
&#8220;It&#8217;s like trying to get a straight answer out of a f***ing leprechaun,&#8221; Fraser explained, adding that he eventually learned that it&#8217;s &#8220;for reasons unknown.&#8221;
&#8220;Then you learn quickly that I wouldn&#8217;t have it any other way,&#8221; he added. &#8220;This kid has the most joy onboard of anyone I know, and he happens to be related to me as my son. I want to know what he thinks is so gut-bustingly funny all day long, in a genuine way and he&#8217;s cracking himself up. He loves to go for a ride in the car. It doesn&#8217;t matter where you&#8217;re taking him.&#8221;
&#8220;He would sit on, he would go on a big airplane and ride commuter flights between here and Philly all day, if he could, because that&#8217;s what brings him joy,&#8221; Fraser continued.
