A judge in Delaware denied Deadspin&#8217;s attempt to get a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/kansas-city-chiefs-fan-falsely-accused-of-blackface-sues-deadspin-over-race-baiting-agenda" target="_blank" rel="noopener">defamation suit</a> against it tossed out after the sports blog published an article that falsely accused a 9-year-old Kansas City Chiefs fan of wearing blackface at a game last year.
On Monday, Superior Court Judge Sean Lugg shot down Deadspin&#8217;s motion to dismiss a defamation lawsuit filed by Raul Armenta Jr. and his wife Shannon on behalf of their son, Holden, the Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/defamation-deadspin-nfl-football-sports-fans-racism-795bbc257df663a94617246f3467d86c#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The young Chiefs fan attended a game in Las Vegas last November, wearing an American Indian headdress and painting his face half red and half black for his favorite team&#8217;s colors.
In an article written by Carron Phillips and published by Deadspin, Holden is accused of wearing blackface and finding &#8220;a way to hate black people and the Native American at the same time.&#8221; The main photo for the article only showed the side of Holden&#8217;s face that was painted black, and Phillips claimed that Holden was taught &#8220;hatred&#8221; by his parents.
“Deadspin published an image of a child displaying his passionate fandom as a backdrop for its critique of the NFL’s diversity efforts and, in its description of the child, crossed the fine line protecting its speech from defamation claims,” Judge Lugg wrote. “Having reviewed the complaint, the court concludes that Deadspin’s statements accusing H.A. of wearing black face and Native headdress ‘to hate black people and the Native American at the same time,’ and that he was taught this hatred by his parents, are provable false assertions of fact and are therefore actionable.&#8221;

According to the Armentas lawsuit, Holden is proud of his family’s Chumash-Indian heritage and wore the headdress along with the face paint to support the Chiefs. Phillips was blasted in the lawsuit as &#8220;someone who makes his livelihood through vicious race-baiting.&#8221;
After backlash to Phillips falsely writing that Holden was wearing blackface and calling him and his parents &#8220;racist,&#8221; the writer doubled down, writing on X, &#8220;For the idiots in my mentions who are treating this as some harmless act because the other side of his face was painted red, I could make the argument that it makes it even worse. Y’all are the ones who hate Mexicans but wear sombreros on Cinco.&#8221;

&#8220;Accusing people of engaging in racist acts has long been Phillips’ modus operandi; his career is based on it,&#8221; the lawsuit states. &#8220;His recent articles include: &#8216;Ryan Tannehill’s ‘support’ for young Titans quarterbacks depends on if they’re white&#8217;; &#8216;We know why Simone Biles doesn’t get the same attention as Taylor Swift at NFL games&#8217; (because she is Black), and &#8216;The Chicago Bears haven’t won a playoff game since Lovie Smith. During the 87-year-old actor’s recent appearance on the “Club Random with Bill Maher” <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEWNzLJJ0Jo&amp;embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailywire.com%2F&amp;source_ve_path=MjM4NTE&amp;feature=emb_title">podcast</a>, the two were discussing how times have changed after Williams praised Laurence Olivier’s performance in the 1965 movie “Othello” — in which the star wore blackface, the <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/billy-dee-williams-actors-allowed-wear-blackface-1235869251/">Hollywood Reporter</a> reported.
“When he did ‘Othello,’ I fell out laughing,” Williams said. “He stuck his a** out and walked around … because Black people are supposed to have big a**es. I thought it was hysterical. I loved it.”
Maher replied, “I agree. But today, they would never let you do that.”

When the host pointed out that the actor lived during a period of history where “you couldn’t play the part you should’ve played,” Williams told him he didn’t want to live his life like a “victim.”
“But the point is, you don’t go through life feeling like, ‘I’m a victim,’” the actor explained. “I refuse to go through life saying to the world, ‘I’m pissed off.’ I’m not gonna be pissed off 24 hours a day.”

The sports outlet&#8217;s new headline reads, &#8220;The NFL Must Ban Native Headdress And Culturally Insensitive Face Paint in the Stands&#8221; and includes an image of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. The original story had a photo of the young football fan, Holden Armenta, wearing a traditional headdress and only one side of the boy&#8217;s face-the black side. The original headline read, &#8220;The NFL needs to speak out against the Kansas City Chiefs fan in Black face, Native headdress.&#8221;

An editor&#8217;s note was included at the top of the piece that reads, &#8220;On Nov. 27, Deadspin published an opinion piece criticizing the NFL for allowing a young fan to attend the Kansas City Chiefs game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Nov. 26 wearing a traditional Native American headdress and, based upon the available photo, what appeared to be black face paint.&#8221;
&#8220;Unfortunately the article drew attention to the fan, though our intended focus was on the NFL and its checkered history on race, an issue which our writer has covered extensively for Deadspin,&#8221; the note added. &#8220;Three years ago, the Chiefs banned fans from wearing headdresses in Arrowhead Stadium, as well as face painting that &#8216;appropriates American Indian cultures and traditions.&#8217; The story&#8217;s intended focus was the NFL and its failure to extend those rules to the entire league.&#8221;
&#8220;We regret any suggestion that we were attacking the fan,&#8221; the note continued. &#8220;To that end, our story was updated on Dec. 7 to remove any photos, tweets, links, or otherwise identifying information about the fan. We have also revised the headline to better reflect the substance of the story.&#8221;
Holden&#8217;s parents, Shannon and Raul &#8216;Bubba,&#8217; hired an attorney to demand a retraction of the story and threatened further action against the author Carron J. Phillips’ piece was roundly mocked on social media after he condemned the young fan for wearing “blackface.” X owner Elon Musk even chimed in after a community note was placed on the article explaining that the photo used in the article only showed the side of Armenta’s face that was painted black and ignored that the other side of his face was painted red, which is the Chiefs&#8217; primary color.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/youtube">YouTuber</a> and performer Colleen Ballinger, best known by the name Miranda Sings, has been accused of performing in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/blackface">blackface</a> in a resurfaced video.
The clip was originally shared in February 2018 on the Miranda Sings YouTube channel.  It is still able to be viewed but is unlisted. 
The clip shows Ballinger sporting dark-colored grease paint on her face while singing the popular Beyoncé song “Single Ladies.”  Some viewers saw the clip and accused Ballinger of performing in blackface, while others insisted the makeup was tinted green and could have been left over from her performing a song from the musical &#8220;Wicked.&#8221; Ballinger&#8217;s legal representatives echoed those claims, stating that the video was originally recorded in 2009, <a href="https://variety.com/2023/digital/news/colleen-ballinger-beyonce-single-ladies-blackface-1235662135/">per Variety</a>.
A clip of the performance went viral after user Paige Christie posted it to Twitter with the caption, “I’m gonna need someone to explain the black on her face…”

Activist Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, who <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/activist-author-refuses-to-begin-interview-until-host-pronounces-her-name-correctly">made headlines</a> in May for refusing to start an interview until a British TV presenter pronounced her name correctly, commented, “Colleen Ballinger tells the world she’s a racist with her full chest. Imagine doing a Beyoncé song in Blackface and the audience are laughing &amp; being entertained. These White people know what they are doing. Racists be racizisming.”
The video comes several weeks after Ballinger publicly responded to allegations that she had inappropriate interactions with teenage fans in the past. The YouTuber responded to the claims in a June 28 video with a song she posted on her channel, calling the accusations “lies” and “gossip.”
“I’m sure you’re disappointed in my s***tty little song / I know you wanted me to say that I was 100% in the wrong / well I’m sorry I’m not gonna take that route / of admitting to lies and rumors that you made up for clout,” Ballinger said at one point. 
Another lyric said, “The only thing I’ve ever groomed is my two Persian cats / I’m not a groomer, just a loser / who didn’t understand I shouldn’t respond to fans / and I’m not a predator even a lot of you think so / because five years ago I made a fart joke.”

Ballinger previously apologized in 2020 for a bit she did about Latina women. 
“It is not funny, and it is completely hurtful,” she said, per Variety. “I am so ashamed and embarrassed that I ever thought this was OK. I was a sheltered teenager who was stupid and ignorant and clearly extremely culturally insensitive… Racial stereotypes are not funny, they’re not a joke, and they should never be joked about.”

CNN writer John Blake accused white people of wearing &#8220;digital blackface&#8221; if they shared memes or gifs featuring black people and expressions in order to &#8220;convey comic relief or express emotions.&#8221;
Referring to the most popular memes and gifs as &#8220;radicalized reactions,&#8221; Blake <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/26/us/digital-blackface-social-media-explainer-blake-cec/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">argued</a> that black people &#8220;get a pass&#8221; for using them — but when white people did so, they had &#8220;inadvertently perpetuated one of the most insidious forms of contemporary racism.&#8221;
Blake went on to quote a 2017 Teen Vogue <a href="https://www.teenvogue.com/story/digital-blackface-reaction-gifs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">article</a> written by Lauren Michele Jackson — in which she argued that people often cherry-picked gifs that featured black people when attempting to express extreme emotions.
&#8220;While reaction GIFs can and do every feeling under the sun, white and nonblack users seem to especially prefer GIFs with black people when it comes to emitting their most exaggerated emotions,&#8221; Jackson wrote. &#8220;Extreme joy, annoyance, anger and occasions for drama and gossip are a magnet for images of black people, especially black femmes.&#8221;
Blake went on later in the article to refer to &#8220;digital blackface&#8221; as a &#8220;modern-day repackaging of <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2019/02/02/us/racist-origins-of-blackface/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">minstrel shows</a>.&#8221;
But when Blake&#8217;s article made the rounds on Twitter on Sunday, critics had a field day with the idea.
Radio host Clay Travis tied the concept to the transgender movement, tweeting, &#8220;I’d love to hear an explanation of how posting a gif or meme of a black person online is digital blackface, but a man dressing up like a woman in real life is heroic. Please explain @cnn.&#8221;

When Trudeau was 29, he dressed as Aladdin at a an Arabian-Nights-themed annual dinner at an expensive Vancouver private school, wearing brownface makeup.  The photo was displayed in the 2000-01 yearbook for West Point Grey Academy. When he was in high school, he wore blackface to apparently pose as famed singer Harry Belafonte.
When the photo of Trudeau was revealed in 2019, Andrew Scheer, the Conservative party leader, reacted, “I was extremely shocked and disappointed when I learned of Justin Trudeau’s actions. Wearing brownface is an act of open mockery. It was just as racist in 2001 as it is in 2019. What Canadians saw this evening was someone with a complete lack of judgment and someone who is not fit to govern this country,” the <a href="https://nationalpost.com/pmn/elections-pmn/reactions-to-canadian-pm-trudeaus-brown-face-2001-picture">National Post</a> reported.

The tweet about firing indigenous women referenced Jody Wilson-Raybould, Canada’s first indigenous attorney general and minister of justice. It had been reported that Trudeau’s office had attempted to force her to help a construction company avoid a corruption trial.
In her book, “‘Indian’ in the Cabinet: Speaking Truth to Power,” Wilson-Raybould <a href="https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/article-in-that-moment-i-knew-he-wanted-me-to-lie-jody-wilson-raybould-recalls/">wrote of a meeting</a> with Trudeau three days after the front-page story in The Globe and Mail broke.

A pair of Arizona diversity advocates who accused a DJ at a disco-themed charity auction of wearing blackface were left with egg on their own faces when the man turned out to be African American.
Stuart Rhoden, an instructor in ASU’s University College, and Jill Lassen, a librarian who serves as co-chair for the Scottsdale Parent Council (SPC), were quick to accuse the Hopi PTA in an undisclosed email of racism based on photos of the April 9 event. One picture showed DJ Koko Kim Hunter joined by other attendees, all of them dressed in 1970’s themed attire, the <a href="https://arizonadailyindependent.com/2022/04/14/scottsdales-dei-gurus-accuse-black-dj-of-wearing-blackface/">Arizona Daily Independent</a> reported.
Megan Livengood, head of the Hopi PTA, responded to the pair with an angry email of her own, stating that she was &#8220;deeply offended&#8221; by the &#8220;false and hurtful&#8221; accusation.
&#8220;The Scottsdale Parent Council is an organization that claims to encourage diversity and inclusion; accusing the Hopi PTA and myself a hiring a DJ that participated in racist behavior is absolutely against your mission,&#8221; Livengood wrote. &#8220;The DJ that the Hopi PTA hire was, in fact a Black man. It is insulting that you feel myself or PTA condone racist behavior or encourage it by posting on social media. After such a successful event to support our school it’s disheartening to to (sic) believe in organization we pay to be part of (SPC) would send out such an aggressive response without checking the facts first or simply picking up the phone to discuss.&#8221;
A contrite Lassen, a self-described &#8220;ally to the LGBTQ+ community&#8221; who serves as co-chair of the Scottsdale Parents Organization&#8217;s diversity, equity and inclusion committee, and has referred to parents as “super rich White Karens,” told Livengood she was sorry for jumping to conclusions.
&#8220;You are right, we should’ve reached out and inquired before making such accusations,&#8221; Lassen wrote in an email to Livengood. &#8220;I cannot fathom the hurt, anger and frustration you felt after you and others volunteered countless hours on your event. Again I truly apologize.&#8221;
Lassen&#8217;s fellow accuser, Rhoden, “is a member of <a style="font-style: inherit;" href="https://www.scottsdale.org/city_news/susd-rushed-to-form-equity-panel-emails-show/article_1dbb242a-b7d0-11ea-9b64-b7d72df93dd0.html">Scottsdale Unified’s Equity and Inclusion Committee</a> and the <a style="font-style: inherit;" href="https://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/boards/human-relations-commission">Scottsdale Human Relations Commission</a>, which claims to ‘promote all dimensions of diversity’ as an advisory body to the mayor, city council and staff,” the Independent reported.

Rhoden wasn&#8217;t apologetic, insisting improbably on Facebook that he never said Hunter was not black and that it was possible that Hunter was a black man wearing blackface.
&#8220;Let me be clear, a Black man, apparently in Black face is an entirely different discussion than a White person,&#8221; Rhoden wrote. &#8220;However, I did not state that the person was White. It was assumed that was my intent, and perhaps it was, but nonetheless, looking on his FB page (photos below), it seems at the very least he is in darker make-up if not “Black face” or I am completely mistaken and it’s the lighting of the patio.&#8221;
Amanda Wray, a Scottsdale Unified School District activist, blasted the SPC, of which Lassen and Rhoden are a part, for the baseless attack on the larger PTA which funds the smaller group.
&#8220;The SPC is so intent on finding racism they will go so far as to accuse a member of one of the communities they claim to advocate for of reprehensible behavior,&#8221; Wray said. &#8220;This hateful nonsense has to stop. This organization needs to be defunded by every Scottsdale PTA/PTO/APT. If you are an SUSD parent, I encourage you to contact your parent organization and ask that they stop funding this hate group.&#8221;

Woke Diversity Advocates Accuse DJ Of Wearing Blackface. He’s Actually Black.

A top scientist who has devoted her career to finding a cure for HIV is getting canceled because, 13 years ago, she dressed as Michael Jackson to a Halloween party.
Julie Overbaugh was forced out of her leadership position at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and resigned from her faculty affiliate positions that the University of Washington School of Medicine over the photo, The College Fix <a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/top-female-scientist-canceled-over-13-year-old-michael-jackson-halloween-costume/">reported</a>.
“A picture of the 13-year-old incident, in which she is accused of wearing ‘blackface,’ has prompted peers to accuse her of racism despite the fact that her research has focused on aiding Africans for the last three decades,” the outlet reported.
The lab where Overbaugh worked always attend a themed Halloween party. In 2009, the theme was “Thriller,” named after Jackson’s famous album. Other years saw members of the lab dressed as emojis or fish. The photo from 2009 is now missing from a <a href="https://research.fredhutch.org/overbaugh/en/halloween-pictures.html">website</a> that commemorates the parties.
Overbaugh was placed on administrative leave and an investigation was opened in mid-February, according to the research center. The center also released a statement saying “The act depicted in the photo is racist, offensive and hurtful, and we offer our sincere apologies to anyone who has experienced pain or upset because of the act or this photo.”
As The Federalist <a href="https://thefederalist.com/2022/03/07/award-winning-hiv-researcher-forced-into-re-education-for-dressing-up-like-michael-jackson/">noted</a>, the incident didn’t occur at UW Medicine, yet its CEO Dr. Paul Ramsey and Equity Officer Paula Houston sent an email to staff announcing Overbaugh’s punishment for the “racist, dehumanizing, and abhorrent act” of “blackface.”
“Ramsey and Houston claim that the UW Medicine community was ‘harmed’ by the 13-year-old photo that most staff didn’t know existed until reading about it in the Feb. 25 email. ‘We acknowledge that our community has been harmed by this incident and the fact that 13 years elapsed before action was taken,’ they wrote. ‘We are convening a series of affinity group meetings in the next few weeks to provide spaces for mutual support, reflection, and response,’” the Federalist reported. “Neither Ramsey nor Houston explained how the photo ‘harmed’ anyone. Journalist Jesse Singal noted how Overbaugh “is having her reputation and career incinerated because she dressed up as Michael Jackson, in blackface, once in 2009.”
“Just to situate everyone, the event in question happened several years before the most recent instance of 30 Rock airing blackface-oriented comedy to tens of millions of people. What she did was a bad idea but at the time was obviously not seen as too risque even for network TV,” Singal added.
Overbaugh released a statement regarding the situation.
“I did not know the association of this with blackface at the time, in 2009, but understand the offense that is associated with this now,” she said, according to the Fix. “I have apologized for this both publicly and privately and beyond that have no other comments.”
It should be noted that former Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, a Democrat, was able to keep his job and keep his status in political circles even after it was discovered he appeared in blackface or a KKK hood while in medical school. Northam also admitted to darkening his face once for a Michael Jackson costume.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faced backlash for celebrating the first day of Black History Month — despite the existence of several photos and videos of Trudeau in blackface.
“This #BlackHistoryMonth, let’s celebrate the important work of Black Canadians, who have helped build and shape our country — and let’s keep working to create a better and more inclusive Canada,” the official tweeted on Tuesday.

When the images and videos were <a href="https://nationalpost.com/news/politics/election-2019/yearbook-photo-surfaces-of-trudeau-wearing-brownface-costume-in-2001">unearthed</a> in 2019, Trudeau explained that “it was something that I didn’t think was racist at the time, but now I recognize, it was something racist to do.”
More recently, Trudeau has also come under fire for a mandate that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/canadian-truckers-lead-freedom-convoy-to-ottawa-in-protest-of-vaccine-mandate">forces</a> unvaccinated drivers to observe a two-week quarantine and COVID-19 test before crossing into Canada from the United States. As tens of thousands of truckers and other protesters flooded Ottawa, Trudeau claimed that other Canadians are “disgusted” by their behavior.
“I know this pandemic is frustrating. It’s frustrating that, after two years, we’re not done fighting COVID-19. But over the past few days, Canadians have been shocked — and, frankly, disgusted — by the behaviour displayed by some people protesting in our nation’s capital,” the prime minister wrote.

“I want to be very clear: We’re not intimidated by those who hurl abuse at small business workers and steal food from the homeless,” Trudeau continued. “We won’t give in to those who fly racist flags. And we won’t cave to those who engage in vandalism, or dishonour the memory of our veterans.”
“There is no place in Canada for this behaviour. So, to those responsible: It needs to stop. And to those who joined the convoy but are uncomfortable with the symbols of hatred and division on display: Be courageous and speak out. Do not stand for, or with, intolerance and hate,” Trudeau concluded.
However, as The Daily Wire’s Dillon Burroughs <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/say-what-trudeau-claims-canadians-are-disgusted-over-truck-convoy-protesters">highlighted</a>, the alleged “disgusting” behavior seems to contradict the observed behavior of the protesters. Some were seen cleaning the streets after the demonstrations, and — despite claims that the protesters are driven by racism — many in Canada’s Sikh community have also participated.

Among those who have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/canadian-truckers-rule-elon-musk-joe-rogan-jordan-peterson-endorse-freedom-convoy">endorsed</a> the “Freedom Convoy” are Tesla CEO Elon Musk, podcast host Joe Rogan, and psychology professor emeritus Jordan Peterson.
As news of the protest made international headlines, Musk expressed approval in a three-word tweet: “Canadian truckers rule.” Meanwhile, Rogan highlighted the convoy and noted that Canada is “in revolt.” Peterson — a Canadian — has repeatedly discussed the protest on his Twitter page, categorizing The Toronto Star’s assertion that the truckers are “flirting with extremists” as laughable.
