New <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/08/us/politics/biden-aides-election-age.html">reporting</a> reveals an extraordinary isolation campaign by former President Joe Biden&#8217;s closest aides at the end of his term, with staffers screaming at reporters, changing his phone number, and blocking access from panicked Democrats trying to tell him the truth about his failing campaign.
The revelation appears in the recently published <a href="https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/754957/2024-by-josh-dawsey-tyler-pager-isaac-arnsdorf/">book</a> by a trio of legacy media reporters, titled &#8220;2024: How Trump Retook the White House and the Democrats Lost America,&#8221; written by Wall Street Journal reporter Josh Dawsey, New York Times White House correspondent Tyler Pager, and Washington Post reporter Isaac Arnsdorf.
Pager, conducting research for the book, managed to obtain Biden’s cellphone number in March 2025. The former president quickly agreed to an interview despite his aides repeatedly turning down similar requests from Page for several months.
Asked if he regretted dropping out of the presidential race, Biden said in a dispassionate tone, “No, not now. I don’t spend a lot of time on regrets.” He then ended the conversation to board an Amtrak train, Pager <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/08/us/politics/biden-aides-election-age.html">recalled</a> for the Times.
Pager’s brief discussion with Biden reportedly sparked panic among the former president’s top aides. “After the first call,” the authors <a href="https://www.mediaite.com/media/news/bidens-team-scolded-reporters-changed-his-number-after-they-called-personal-cellphone-report/">report</a> in the book, “furious Biden aides repeatedly called and texted [Pager].”
“One screamed at me for calling the former president directly. Others texted furiously, trying to figure out how I had obtained Mr. Biden’s phone number,” Pager said.
Although Biden himself initially seemed open to continuing to talk to Pager, the reporter’s calls began to go straight to voicemail.
Within days, Pager’s calls were greeted with a message from Verizon: “The number you dialed has been changed, disconnected, or is no longer in service.”
The Times reporter writes that this incident is reflective of the insularity of Team Biden throughout his doomed presidential campaign.
Pager reports that instead of confronting Biden with the harsh reality after his disastrous debate performance, his inner circle restricted access to him, making it difficult for even longtime allies, such as Senator Chris Coons of Delaware, to connect with the president.
On his way to a fundraiser after the debate, Biden asked his traveling aides aboard Air Force One what people were saying about his performance.
Rather than providing an accurate assessment, they offered what witnesses described as a &#8220;sanitized version&#8221; of the situation.
According to Pager, Biden’s aides never even allowed him to meet with campaign pollsters, instead presenting Biden with overly optimistic outlooks that alarmed campaign staff.
Following the debate, campaign pollsters presented their findings to Biden&#8217;s advisers, and their conclusion was damning: all polling indicated that Biden had no path to victory, and voters were not convinced that he was up for the job.
This assessment enraged Steve Ricchetti, counselor to the former president and chairman of Biden&#8217;s 2020 presidential campaign, who reportedly preferred a sanitized version of events.
“Two days after the presentation, Geoff Garin, one of the pollsters, checked in with Mr. Ricchetti. Mr. Ricchetti lit into him and said the presentation was out of line,” Pager reported. “It was not their job to tell them there was no path to victory. The pollsters, Mr. Ricchetti said, were supposed to provide the path to win.”
Rep. Pete Aguilar, a top House Democrat from California, confronted Ricchetti in a heated call, asking, &#8220;Do you realize how bad it is? Has anyone told the president how bad it is?&#8221;
When Ricchetti insisted that many members of Congress still supported the president, Aguilar pushed back: &#8220;Steve, has anyone walked into the Oval and told him we could lose everything?&#8221; Ricchetti admitted no one had.
According to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/08/us/politics/biden-aides-election-age.html">The Times</a>, the situation was so dire that reliable Democratic strongholds, including Virginia, Minnesota, and New Mexico, suddenly became competitive – a devastating development that Biden&#8217;s inner circle concealed from him.
When former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) met privately with Biden at the White House during this crisis period, she grew frustrated by his insistence that polling showed no real change since the debate.
At one point, Biden called his longtime adviser, Mike Donilon, to refute Pelosi&#8217;s claim that polls showed he would lose to Trump. Donilon got on the line and reportedly contradicted Pelosi&#8217;s assessment.
Campaign adviser Adrienne Elrod was so concerned that Biden wasn&#8217;t getting an accurate assessment that she contacted &#8220;Morning Joe&#8221; hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, knowing the president watched their show on MSNBC every morning.
Days before Biden dropped out, Scarborough aired these concerns, saying, &#8220;The anger I hear are the people who are keeping him in a bubble.&#8221;
Even when confronted directly by donors at a Hamptons fundraiser who challenged him on his debate performance, Biden dismissed concerns as &#8220;one bad night&#8221; and vowed to stay in the race. His closest aides brushed off the concerns as typical donor anxiety.
The controversy over Biden&#8217;s isolation mirrors similar concerns that arose during his presidency, when critics frequently questioned whether his staff was shielding him from unscripted interactions with the press and public.
Throughout his term, the White House faced persistent accusations that Biden&#8217;s handlers were deliberately limiting his exposure to mask cognitive decline – allegations his team consistently dismissed as partisan attacks despite mounting video evidence of verbal stumbles and confusion during public appearances.

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, a Republican, called on the Department of Justice to investigate whether President Joe Biden’s alleged cognitive decline enabled unelected staff to enact far-left policies without his informed approval.
According to a letter from Bailey, “Biden’s mental decline is famous,” and staffers “may have exploited Biden’s incapacity so they could issue orders without an accountable President of sound mind approving them.”
He contends that such orders, including mass commutations and pardons for convicted criminals, would be “null and void” if Biden never knowingly approved them.
Bailey cites House Speaker Mike Johnson’s account of Biden’s mental decline heavily impacting his effectiveness as an executive: “Biden did not know what orders he was signing.”
“In January 2024, when Johnson asked Biden about a moratorium on energy exports to Europe, Biden informed Johnson that he thought he had merely signed an order authorizing a study on exports,” Bailey said.

Special Counsel Robert K. Hur released a 345-page report in February on Biden’s handling of classified documents, where Hur detailed early indications of the decline that would eventually lead Biden to drop out of the race just a few months later, as Bailey notes in the letter.
In what was described as &#8220;[t]he loudest public alarm about Joe Biden&#8217;s mental acuity,&#8221; Special Counsel Hur described Biden as an &#8220;elderly man with a poor memory&#8221; who could not even remember when he was Vice President or, even within several years, when his son passed away,” Bailey said about Hur’s report.
In the end, Hur declined to charge Biden, not necessarily for a lack of evidence, but for a seeming lack of competence as a &#8220;well-meaning, elderly man&#8221; with a &#8220;poor memory.”
Bailey points out, “If Biden could not even form a mens rea [criminal intent] for allegedly criminal activity (a low bar), how can anyone have confidence he had the capacity to make decisions as the chief executive of the United States?”
According to high-profile DNC fundraiser Lindy Li, quoted in the letter, “the people who ran our country for the last four years” were his staff, his wife, and his son, Hunter Biden.
Bailey further claims that prominent Democrats and senior staffers, including former Vice President Kamala Harris, heavily restricted Biden’s interactions, creating conditions under which unelected aides could assume disproportionate influence over policy.
Whether the president was fully aware when authorizing key decisions can pose significant constitutional questions and impact the balance of power among the executive branch, Congress, and individual states, with Bailey in particular pointing to Biden vacating the death sentences of several inmates who committed their offenses in Missouri.
And, if it is found that Biden was not competent, “As the Supreme Court recently held, States like Missouri can criminally try individuals under state law even if they already were prosecuted under federal law. States like Missouri need to know whether to pursue that path or similar paths.”
Likewise, the letter references a series of clemencies for roughly 2,500 people described as “non-violent.” Among them, it says, was an individual convicted in the killing of a mother and her 8-year-old child, heightening questions about whether authorities might revisit similar cases if the president himself was not competently directing those actions.
Bailey concludes, “I fear that Mr. Biden, while he held the office of President, did so in name only and was a mere puppet for far-left, unelected staffers. The people deserve to know the truth.”

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Wednesday morning did not provide a direct answer when she was asked if she wanted President Joe Biden to continue his campaign for president.
The California Democrat was pressed on the issue on MSNBC&#8217;s &#8220;Morning Joe&#8221; and said she and other Democrats would support whatever Biden chooses to do.

Pelosi said Biden has the &#8220;overwhelming support of the caucus,&#8221; although she noted that &#8220;it&#8217;s not for me to say&#8221; since she no longer leads House Democrats.
&#8220;But he&#8217;s beloved, he is respected, and people want him to make that decision,&#8221; she said.
MSNBC&#8217;s Willie Geist countered, &#8220;He has said he has made the decision. He has said firmly this week he is going to run. Do you want him to run?&#8221;
&#8220;I want him to do whatever he decides to do,&#8221; Pelosi responded. &#8220;And that&#8217;s the way it is. Whatever he decides, we go with.&#8221;
Pelosi then shifted gears, saying Biden is &#8220;orchestrating&#8221; this week&#8217;s NATO conference &#8220;magnificently.&#8221;
The former speaker said she told her fellow Democrats to refrain from expressing their opinions about Biden&#8217;s candidacy until after this week.
&#8220;I&#8217;ve said, everyone, let&#8217;s just hold off, whatever you&#8217;re thinking either tell somebody privately, but you don&#8217;t have to put that out on the table until we see how we go this week,&#8221; Pelosi said.
Biden&#8217;s campaign is facing a crisis among Democrats since his dismal debate performance last month against former President Donald Trump.
Democrats are currently divided on Biden, and many have publicly expressed concerns that the president may not be up to the task of serving another four years or even campaigning for the next four months.
Pelosi&#8217;s unenthusiastic remarks on Biden&#8217;s candidacy Wednesday come as other top Democrats, including Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), have <a href="https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2024/07/09/congress/schumer-im-with-joe-00167121" target="_blank" rel="noopener">declared</a> their solid support for the president.
Biden has made it clear he has no intention of dropping out.

&#8220;Nearly 250 years ago, America was founded in defiance of a king under the belief that no one is above the law, not even the president — until now,&#8221; the Biden ad&#8217;s narrator says.
The spot refers to the high court as the &#8220;Trump Supreme Court&#8221; and implies that the justices ignored the law and ruled as Trump wanted them to.

President Joe Biden, 81, has frequently attacked the Supreme Court with its 6-3 conservative majority, especially as the campaign season has heated up.

Attorney Mark Paoletta, a personal friend of Justice Clarence Thomas who played a significant role in his confirmation, called the attacks on the court &#8220;dangerous.&#8221;
&#8220;Obama criticized a single case in his State of the Union, which is bad enough, but Biden does a nationwide primetime address to trash the court on immunity… though he did not have the courage or perhaps the mental acuity to take any questions,&#8221; Paoletta <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/bidens-scotus-critiques-considered-unprecedented-experts-say-contrasting-clintons-2000-deference" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.
In 2010, then-President Barack Obama lashed out at the court&#8217;s decision in the Citizens United case, which allowed corporations and other groups to spend independently on political campaigns.
The court &#8220;reversed a century of law that I believe will open the floodgates for special interests — including foreign corporations — to spend without limit in our elections,&#8221; Obama said during his State of the Union speech that year.

&#8220;Tonight President Biden and Vice President Harris met with Democratic governors from across the country at the White House to discuss their continued partnership in this reelection campaign,&#8221; the Biden campaign claimed in a statement following the meeting. &#8220;The president reiterated his determination to defeat the existential threat of Donald Trump at the ballot box in November and sought the advice and expertise of Democratic governors.&#8221;
The campaign said that the meeting also focused on the importance of making sure that Democrats were elected &#8220;up and down the ballot to deliver more Democratic governors and more Democratic majorities in Congress and statehouses across the country.&#8221;
&#8220;All participants reiterated their shared commitment to do everything possible to make sure President Biden and Vice President Harris beat Donald Trump in November,&#8221; the campaign claimed.
The White House hosted the meeting for the governors, which was attended in person by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the chair of the Democrat Governors Association, along with California Governor Gavin Newsom, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, New York Governor Kathy Hochul, Maryland Governor Wes Moore, and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. All the other Democrat governors attended the event virtually.

During a meeting with the campaign earlier in the day, Biden denied that he was dropping out as he sought to ease staffer&#8217;s minds amid reports that he had told an ally that he was considering it.
“Let me say this as clearly as I possibly can, as simply and straightforward as I can: I am running,” Biden said. “No one is pushing me out,” he continued. “I’m not leaving. I’m in this race to the end and we’re going to win.”

In January, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) accused those criticizing Biden&#8217;s mental capacity of &#8220;ageism.&#8221;
&#8220;I&#8217;ve spent a lot of time with the president, and he&#8217;s great,&#8221; Walz said on NBC. &#8220;We&#8217;re talking, we&#8217;re chatting and all this, and I think, you know, we all get a little older, that&#8217;s what happens. Former Democrat Tulsi Gabbard explained how she believes her former party has damaged its standing with Christian voters, one of the largest voting blocs in the country.
In an interview with The Daily Wire over the weekend, Gabbard said that during her time as a Democratic politician, she noticed increasing &#8220;discomfort when people mention God or open a meeting with a prayer.&#8221;
&#8220;You see how this progression in the Democratic National Conventions over time, how once prayer and God, they were very much a part of many of the speeches that were given,&#8221; Gabbard told The Daily Wire.
&#8220;You go back to the last convention in 2020 and maybe there was one mention of God, but even in the Pledge of Allegiance, they took out &#8216;under God&#8217; when they said that,&#8221; she said.
Gabbard was a popular congresswoman from Hawaii and served as vice chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee until 2016. She even ran for president in the party&#8217;s 2020 primary before announcing in October 2022 that she had left the Democratic Party and was an independent.
&#8220;This is one of the reasons I left the Democratic Party, is they are undermining our freedom of religion and they are both directly and indirectly challenging our democracy and targeting people of faith and spirituality, especially Christians,&#8221; Gabbard said.
&#8220;So it&#8217;s no wonder why so many Christians and, and people of faith recognize the danger of what happens when you have a party in power trying to remove even any mention of God from every facet of our public life,&#8221; she added.

However, under DeSantis&#8217; leadership, Republicans are now closing in on having more than a million more registered voters than Democrats have.
&#8220;For decades, Florida was the largest, most-important battleground state in presidential elections,&#8221; DeSantis posted on X this week in response to the Biden campaign acknowledging that the state is not winnable for Biden.

Trump first called for ending taxes on tips at a Nevada rally earlier this month, saying that “people that get tips” are “going to be very happy, because when I get to office, we are going to not charge taxes on tips.”
Nevada has a large number of workers who receive tips, largely due to the recreation and tourism industries in the Las Vegas area.

Earlier this month, singer Kid Rock shared a photo of a receipt showing he had tipped $400 on a $1,143 bill at a steakhouse. On the receipt he had written, &#8220;A vote for Trump is a vote for no tax on tips!!&#8221;
Many other social media users shared photos of their receipts with similar messages as well.
On Saturday, Trump himself hopped on the trend when he stopped by a Philadelphia cheesesteak restaurant and left a $500 tip, writing &#8220;no tax on tip&#8221; on the receipt.
“It’s simple: President Trump wants hardworking American to keep more money in their pocket, Joe Biden wants to take it to give to illegal immigrants. Virginia has 13 electoral votes, which Democrats have snagged in both of the last two presidential elections. A presidential candidate needs 270 electoral votes to secure victory.
In 2020, Biden won Virginia by 10 points or nearly half a million votes. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won the state by less, five points or about 200,000 votes.
Clinton&#8217;s popularity in Virginia may have been boosted by picking Virginia Senator Tim Kaine as her running mate.

However, Biden has slowly lost ground in Virginia this election cycle, according to polls from the last few months.
In a <a href="https://www.roanoke.edu/news/rc_poll_politics_may_2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener">poll</a> from late May, Biden and former President Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, were shown tied 42-42.
In another estimate, Biden leads Donald Trump by just 0.1%, according to an average of 17 polls.
Other states marked as toss-ups by the poll rater are Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, Nevada,  Minnesota, North Carolina, and Georgia.
Overall, Trump <a href="https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/president/general/2024/trump-vs-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">is up</a> over Biden by less than a point, according to the RealClearPolitics average of polls.
As of late last month, the former president was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-leads-biden-in-five-of-seven-swing-states-poll-finds" target="_blank" rel="noopener">leading</a> in five of six swing states, although Biden has been <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/joe-biden-donald-trump-polls-battleground-states-1908358" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shown</a> with a small lead in several of those states since then, according to some polls.
In 2020, Trump lost a slew of these battleground states: Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, and Wisconsin.
With the election just five months away, both Trump and Biden have ramped up their campaign strategies. Democrats have leaned into the abortion issue and Trump&#8217;s recent felony conviction, while Republicans have doubled down on their attacks on the economy under Biden, immigration, and the court cases against Trump.
Trump is battling several court cases, one of which kept him stuck in a Manhattan courtroom all day for weeks until late last month, when he was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to hush-money payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels. Trump scheduled rallies and other campaign events in the evenings, on weekends, and on Wednesdays when the court was not usually in session.
Later this month, voters will see the president and former president go head-to-head in the first presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle, which is scheduled for Thursday, June 27.
The first debate could jolt polling in favor of one candidate, at least briefly, as presidential debates have done in the past.

Biden declined to take questions about his executive order on Tuesday, including from a reporter who asked him, &#8220;Why now?&#8221;

In the battleground states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, immigration ranks second in importance after only the economy, which typically dominates presidential elections, a new poll <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/biden-trump-poll-swing-states-battleground-election-1908122" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shows</a>.
Back in March, Psaki laughed with MSNBC host Rachel Maddow about immigration being the top voter concern in Virginia.
&#8220;Well, Virginia does have a border with West Virginia,&#8221; Maddow joked.
&#8220;Right, but you&#8217;re thinking, like, what?&#8221; Psaki responded.
Meanwhile, Biden has reversed many of former President Donald Trump&#8217;s border policies aimed at slowing the flow of illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border, including the Remain in Mexico policy, which forced illegal migrants to stay on the Mexican side of the border while they awaited their asylum hearings.

President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a>’s 2024 presidential campaign said this week that the stakes for the upcoming election are “sky high” so it will again accept dark money donations despite previously condemning such donations. 
Biden’s campaign made the statement to CBS News as it <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-64-million-mystery-anonymous-donations-2024-presidential-campaign/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> on a massive $64 million anonymous donation that was sent to his campaign in 2020. The donation was routed to his campaign coffers through the Impetus Fund, a 501c4 tax-exempt organization that says it is focused on “social welfare.” 
This pledge to accept dark money comes after Biden previously said that dark money “erodes public trust” and that it “flows in the shadows to influence our elections.” However, like in 2020, Biden has again signaled he has no issue taken money that is routed to his campaign coffers without scrutiny.
&#8220;The stakes of this election are sky high,&#8221; a Biden adviser told CBS. &#8220;We will protect our democracy with every tool that is legally available.&#8221;
The focus on Biden’s acceptance of dark money comes with lingering questions about the mysterious $64 million donation. A large bulk of that donation, $55 million, was moved from Impetus to Future Forward USA Action, a nonprofit Biden super PAC. Then, Future Forward USA Action sent $60 million to Future Forward PAC for use in electioneering, CBS News reported. Since the money was sent to the nonprofit first, the donor/donors were shielded from exposure. 
Little is known about the D.C.-based Impetus Fund except that it says it &#8220;works with changemakers across the country to unlock a more inclusive, accessible, and vibrant democracy.&#8221; The group&#8217;s president, Ezra Reese, is tied to Democrat election lawyer Marc Elias. Reese is the political law chair at the Elias Law Group.
Impetus is a project of Arabella Advisors, a massive leftist dark money group that had about $3 billion on hand for the 2022 midterm elections. Back in 2020, it had $410 million that it used against former President Donald Trump and Senate Republicans.
Biden’s acceptance of dark money funding has drawn criticism from government watchdog groups.
&#8220;For too long the left has been playing a game of decrying dark money while at the same time being fully dependent on it, even supercharging Mr. Biden&#8217;s reelection campaign,&#8221; Caitlin Sutherland, the executive director of Americans for Public Trust, told CBS.
Anna Massoglia, the editorial and investigations manager at OpenSecrets, said that dark money hid important information about who was trying to influence American voters. 
“Without information about who is funding groups spending to influence elections, voters won&#8217;t know who is trying to color their views, won&#8217;t be aware of any potential conflicts of interest that a funder has or what stake they may have in the outcome of the election,&#8221; she said.
So far in the 2024 election cycle, Biden has held a significant advantage in fundraising, but Trump has been pulling closer in recent months with big hulls coming alongside his legal battles.
