Stars who have slammed President Donald Trump are now asking the president for help with artificial intelligence copyright protections as Hollywood battles with the impact of AI on the entertainment industry.
Mark Ruffalo, Bette Midler, Ava DuVernay, and more actors have signed a letter to President Trump asking him to hold the line against tech companies who they said have pushed to “weaken copyright” rules, <a href="https://deadline.com/2025/03/trump-ai-hollywood-response-copyright-1236329205/">Deadline</a> noted.
“We firmly believe that America’s global AI leadership must not come at the expense of our essential creative industries,” the group wrote the White House Office of Science and Technology in an open letter.
“America’s arts and entertainment industry supports over 2.3M American jobs with over $229Bn in wages annually, while providing the foundation for American democratic influence and soft power abroad,” it added. “But AI companies are asking to undermine this economic and cultural strength by weakening copyright protections for the films, television series, artworks, writing, music, and voices used to train AI models at the core of multi-billion dollar corporate valuations.”

“For nearly 250 years, U.S. copyright law has balanced [a] creator’s rights with the needs of the public, creating the world’s most vibrant creative economy,” the letter continued. “We recommend that the American AI Action Plan uphold existing copyright frameworks to maintain the strength of America’s creative and knowledge industries, as well as American cultural influence abroad.”
In addition to Ruffalo, Midler, and DuVernay, Ben Stiller, Cate Blanchett, Judd Apatow, Taika Waititi, Natasha Lyonne, Paul McCartney, Lily Gladstone, and Patton Oswalt joined a list of more than 400 people in the entertainment industry who have called on Trump’s administration because they claim OpenAI and Google “are arguing for a special government exemption so they can freely exploit America’s creative and knowledge industries, despite their substantial revenues and available funds.&#8221;
&#8220;AI companies can use our copy-righted material by simply doing what the law requires – negotiating appropriate licenses with copyright holders, just as every other industry does,&#8221; the letter read. &#8220;This issue goes well beyond the entertainment industry, as the right to train AI on all copyright-protected content impacts all of America’s knowledge industries.&#8221;
<a href="https://www.aol.com/actor-mark-ruffalo-dubs-trump-025802346.html">Ruffalo</a> has been an outspoken critic of the president, labeling him once an “enemy of America” in response to an op-ed in The New York Times that claimed Trump was a threat to democracy.

Frequent Trump critic Midler previously <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-bette-midler-social-media-1890734">shared a post</a> on X from a writer who labeled Trump “a troll,&#8221; who has &#8220;no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth.” She captioned the post, noting how “brilliant” the writer was.
Following the 2024 election, director DuVernay blasted Trump’s re-election in spite of the criminal charges he faced, <a href="https://deadline.com/2024/12/ava-duvernay-donald-trump-re-election-origin-release-marrakech-1236190812/">Deadline</a> noted.
“My country is run by criminals, but that criminality is seen as completely different than a black kid on the corner who might buy, sell marijuana,” the actress said. “The black kid is in prison for years, while criminals are elected and make millions of dollars and sell electric cars.”

The remark, seemingly out of the blue from the legendary singer and actress whose career in Hollywood and on Broadway has spanned more than five decades, immediately attracted criticism as well as a fact-check.
Critics pointed out that Clinton is on the record questioning the results of the election she lost to former President Donald Trump.
“There was a widespread understanding that this election [in 2016] was not on the level,” Clinton <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/news/hillary-clinton-maintains-2016-election-was-not-on-the-level-we-still-dont-know-what-really-happened/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.nationalreview.com/news/hillary-clinton-maintains-2016-election-was-not-on-the-level-we-still-dont-know-what-really-happened/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1716310654531000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1TVL8Vaz1kYd5zc1vYUP3N">said</a> in October 2020 during an interview on The Atlantic’s politics podcast, The Ticket. “We still don’t know what really happened.”
“There’s just a lot that I think will be revealed. History will discover,” Clinton continued. “But you don’t win by 3 million votes and have all this other shenanigans and stuff going on and not come away with an idea like, ‘Whoa, something’s not right here.’ That was a deep sense of unease.”
Just two months earlier, in August 2020, Clinton said Joe Biden, then the Democratic presidential nominee, should not concede the upcoming 2020 election “under any circumstances” because she believed “this is going to drag out, and eventually I do believe he will win if we don’t give an inch, and if we are as focused and relentless as the other side is.”
During the same interview, the former secretary of state also called Trump a &#8220;puppet of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin&#8221; and said he &#8220;did not have the temperament to be president.&#8221;
Social media users were quick to point out Clinton&#8217;s comments to Midler.

Meme maker Carpe Donktum started a joke GoFundMe for Midler to raise funds for her verification. “In light of the recent Blue Check tragedy. A GoFundMe has been set up for one of the most tragic victims, [Bette Midler],” user CasuallyGreg <a href="https://twitter.com/CasuallyGreg/status/1649386803374485505">wrote</a>. “Please donate what you can to support this poor unfortunate woman.”
As of Friday morning, the <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-a-witch-get-verified">campaign</a> had raised $160.
While almost all celebrities lost their blue checkmarks with the update, Musk made sure that three prominent figures who publicly promised they would never subscribe to Twitter Blue kept their verified status despite not paying for it. 
NBA star LeBron James, horror author Stephen King, and “Star Trek” actor William Shatner are all still verified on Twitter. 
King tweeted on Thursday, “My Twitter account says I’ve subscribed to Twitter Blue. I haven’t. My Twitter account says I’ve given a phone number. I haven’t.”
Musk replied by saying, “You’re welcome namaste.” The world’s richest man later <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1649211324344201218">confirmed</a> he had kept blue checks for “just Shatner, LeBron and King.”

The “Rose” singer and actress tweeted out a graphic with a painting of the sun and the message: “If God wanted us to have free, unlimited clean energy, he would have given us a giant fusion reactor in the sky.” The pie-in-the-sky post prompted a hypocrisy roast from one Twitter user that enraged the entertainer, who turned 77 on Thursday.
“Bette is so worried about this that she abandoned her house, car, stopped flying and gave up on all modern conveniences and now lives in a solar powered hut in the forest,” tweeted a user who goes by Bookshelf Q. Battler. “What a great example she set for the rest of us. Three cheers for Bette!”

“If you knew what I have done to mitigate the criminal environmental craziness in this country, you would kiss my ass,” she wrote. “I have done my part, and I have done YOUR part. I have done geothermal, solar, hybrid, electric cars, composting, recycling, I bathe once a month! F**k you!”
“In addition, I have saved parks, built parks, cleaned parks, sent kids to schools, taught them how to play music, honored nature by giving people actual LAND to grow their own food and find peace and serenity in nature,” she added. “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE BESIDES SLAG ME?”
Midler’s fans reacted with a vengeance, citing the former star’s long record of activism. But others seemed unable to get past the revelation that Midler bathes just a dozen times per year.

&#8220;It&#8217;s lifted from a fake/parody site,&#8221; one person wrote to Midler.

One Twitter follower wrote, &#8220;As awful as she is, you&#8217;re sharing a fake webpage &#8211; and doing that only blunts efforts to argue against her.&#8221;
While another tweeted, &#8220;This website is a parody account , it shows this at the bottom of the page . Do bette[r].&#8221;
&#8220;Don&#8217;t share fake info./memes,&#8221; one person wrote. &#8220;The real stuff is bad enough on its own!&#8221;

Think <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/jordan-peterson-id-rather-die-than-delete-truthful-tweet-for-cancel-creeps">Jordan Peterson</a>, <a href="https://www.thewrap.com/people-who-have-been-banned-from-twitter/">Mike Lindell, James O’Keefe, and Gen. Michael Flynn</a>. “Don’t Burn This Country” author Dave Rubin nearly joined this list, but decided to delete an “offending” tweet to rejoin the platform.
The Babylon Bee is similarly blocked <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/twitter-responds-to-babylon-bees-appeal-keeps-them-locked-out-of-their-account?%3Futm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=dwtwitter">from tweeting its faux news headlines</a>.
Twitter says each violated the platform’s community standards, and the claims are dubious for some of the aforementioned names.
Yet another group is allowed to thrive on the social media platform. They say incendiary things, spread fake news like wildfire, and promote physical violence against their political foes. And they live to tweet another day.
Meet the progressive stars who can say virtually anything they like without consequences from Twitter. Some are Hollywood heavy hitters. Others exist on the periphery of show business but still have outside influence.
They’re all secure in the knowledge that they won’t collide with Twitter’s censorious overlords, and if they do they’ll never face a full banishment. Why? It’s hard to deny the obvious. Each share the “approved” opinions that align with Twitter’s brain trust.
<h4>Bette Midler</h4>
The Divine Miss M. may be 76, but she’s forever young on Twitter. She uses the platform relentlessly, sharing her hard-Left views with her 2.1M followers. And, along the way, she cheers on physical violence against conservatives.
Perhaps the most egregious examples are the two times that Midler applauded the man who hospitalized Sen. Rand Paul in 2017. Paul’s neighbor, Rene Boucher, physically assaulted the Kentucky Republican, breaking six of his ribs and causing him to have <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-11-08/rand-paul-says-he-suffered-six-broken-ribs-in-attack-at-his-home">part of one lung removed</a>.

Even the Left has been offended by some of her content, as she has also shared <a href="https://hornet.com/stories/bette-midler-homophobic-comment-2/">homophobic messages on Twitter</a>, in an attempt to smite President Donald Trump.
<h4>Tom Arnold</h4>
The comic actor doesn’t command the stage like he did while married to Roseanne Barr. He does still work the comedy club circuit and snags occasional gigs, like his ill-fated VICE show “The Hunt for the Trump Tapes.”
He also weaponizes his Twitter account in some of the nastiest ways possible.
He’s used racially-charged language against <a href="https://twitchy.com/gregp-3534/2018/04/22/tom-arnold-goes-on-unhinged-rant-over-candace-owen-tweets-tells-her-suck-racist-dk/">both The Daily Wire’s Candace Owens</a> and the politically engaged duo <a href="https://www.bet.com/article/upvuar/tom-arnold-makes-racist-remarks-toward-black-conservatives">Diamond and Silk</a>. The “True Lies” star also lashed out at Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, suggesting <a href="https://www.hollywoodintoto.com/tom-arnold-kavanaugh-pedophile/">he’s a pedophile</a> without a molecule of proof to back it up.
He’s the rare far-Left celebrity who felt a smidge of Twitter’s wrath. The platform allegedly removed one of his tweets <a href="https://twitchy.com/samj-3930/2019/10/18/he-is-one-sick-puppy-tom-arnolds-veiled-threat-against-trump-so-malicious-and-vile-twitter-yanked-it/">suggesting someone assassinate President Trump</a>.
<h4>Ron Perlman</h4>
The “Sons of Anarchy” standout spent four solid years attacking President Trump with every tweet he could muster.
The Trump years evidently brought out the worst in the veteran character actor. He once said he’d risk <a href="https://www.hollywoodintoto.com/ron-perlman-trump-twitter-resistance/">death to bring down President Trump</a>, which could have been interpreted as a veiled threat of violence.
Along the way, Perlman showed just how malicious he could be on social media. The “Beauty and the Beast” alum once celebrated the death of Libertarian philanthropist David Koch and wished his <a href="https://twitchy.com/sarahd-313035/2019/08/26/ron-perlman-dials-up-the-drama-after-twitter-temporarily-suspends-him-for-this-totally-innocuous-tweet-referencing-the-koch-brothers/">brother would soon follow him to the grave</a>, a message so ugly even Team Twitter cried foul.
Sometimes Perlman is so unhinged he deletes his own messages. He took a wild swipe at the Supreme Court following a concealed carry verdict, tweeting, “The latest Supreme Court decision on firearms neglects to say the one thing that they actually meant to say; for whites only.”
He quickly <a href="https://twitchy.com/brettt-3136/2022/06/23/ron-perlman-says-supreme-courts-concealed-carry-decision-neglects-to-say-for-whites-only/">erased his missive</a>.
<h4>Ellen Barkin</h4>
The “Animal Kingdom” star joined the ranks of celebrities <a href="https://www.breitbart.com/entertainment/2018/10/01/ellen-barkin-trump-should-be-removed-not-just-from-office/">wishing death</a> on a sitting president in 2018. She also said disgraced comic Louis C.K. should be <a href="https://www.hollywoodintoto.com/tnt-no-comment-ellen-barkin/">raped and shot</a> on the social media platform. Oddly she received no pushback from Twitter, though she did eventually remove the tweets. 
<h4>Alec Baldwin</h4>
The “30 Rock” star may be in trouble for the accidental shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of “Rust.” However, he is yet to be punished for any of his incendiary Twitter missives.
Baldwin once fantasized about <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/alec-baldwin-trump-beaten-rodney-king-concede">President Trump getting pepper sprayed</a> and knelt on until he ran out of oxygen. He also threatened to <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/alec-baldwin-vengeance-against-twitter-user">“find” a fellow Twitter</a> user after they had brief words on the platform.
The versatile actor previously <a href="https://www.latimes.com/entertainment/gossip/la-et-mg-alec-baldwin-twitter-rant-meltdown-gandolfini-funeral-20130628-story.html">slung homophobic slurs on the site</a>, and he compared President <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/alec-baldwin-trump-hitler-twitter-republicans">Trump to Hitler</a> in another scorching hot and hateful message.
<h4>David Cross</h4>
Mr. Never Nude himself can play dirty on social media. That tweet, of course, is still up.
<h4>Joss Whedon</h4>
The “Avengers” director’s career is in purgatory after his bullying behavior went viral in 2021. His <a href="https://www.hollywoodintoto.com/joss-whedon-hate-media-twitter/">rage-tweeting</a>, however, didn’t so much as dent his professional career, nor boot him off of Twitter.
Whedon once mocked the appearance of cancer-stricken teens to score a cheap shot against Rep. Paul Ryan. That’s on top of his wish that Ryan get anally gored by a rhino until he died. He also <a href="https://www.hollywoodintoto.com/joss-whedon-wishes-death-trump/">called for President Trump’s death</a> – a liberal celebrity’s de facto take on the Commander in Chief.
Whedon’s Twitter account is still active, but he stopped sending new messages in 2020.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/bette-midler">Bette Midler</a> is responding to all the backlash about her alleged “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/transgender">transphobic</a>” comments from earlier this week, defending her original tweet and doubling down on why she wrote it.
“PEOPLE OF THE WORLD! My <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/twitter">tweet</a> about women was a response to this fascinating and well written piece in the NYT on July 3rd. There was no intention of anything exclusionary or transphobic in what I said;  it wasn’t about that,” Midler <a href="https://twitter.com/BetteMidler/status/1544470451476467715">shared</a>.
“It was about the same old sh** women – ALL WOMEN – have been putting up with since the cavemen. Even then, men got top billing. But seriously, folks, if anyone who read that tweet thinks I have anything but love for any marginalized people, go to Wikipedia and type in my name,” she continued in a <a href="https://twitter.com/BetteMidler/status/1544470452889853952">follow-up</a>.
“I’ve fought for marginalized people for as long as I can remember. Still, if you want to dismiss my 60 years of proven love and concern over a tweet that accidentally angered the very people I have always supported and adored, so be it,” Midler <a href="https://twitter.com/BetteMidler/status/1544470454005538816">continued</a>. 
“But the truth is, Democracy is slipping through our fingers! I’m all in on trying to save Democracy for ALL PEOPLE. We must unite, because, in case you haven’t been paying attention, divided we will definitely fall,” she <a href="https://twitter.com/BetteMidler/status/1544470455167422464">concluded</a>. 
The linked article led to a New York Times opinion piece titled, “The Far Right and Far Left Agree on One Thing: Women Don’t Count.” The <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/03/opinion/the-far-right-and-far-left-agree-on-one-thing-women-dont-count.html?smid=url-share">article</a> blames conservatives for stripping women’s rights by overturning Roe v. Wade, but it doesn’t let liberals off the hook. Instead, the author accuses radical leftists of disrespecting women in a different way. 
“A number of academics, uber-progressives, transgender activists, civil liberties organizations and medical organizations are working toward an opposite end: to deny women their humanity, reducing them to a mix of body parts and gender stereotypes,” writer Pamela Paul argued. She does not agree with language which eliminates the word women or their essential roles, including new terms such as “menstruators” and “bodies with vaginas.”
Midler seems to agree with that assessment. The original tweet that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/bette-midler-gets-attacked-as-a-terf-after-saying-women-are-being-erased-due-to-terms-like-birthing-people-people-with-vaginas">got her into trouble</a> said, “WOMEN OF THE WORLD! We are being stripped of our rights over our bodies, our lives and even of our name!”
“They don’t call us ‘women’ anymore; they call us ‘birthing people’ or ‘menstruators,’ and even ‘people with vaginas!’ Don’t let them erase you! Every human on earth owes you,” the tweet read.
Critics were quick to call out Midler for what they called trans-exclusionary language, comparing her to another famous TERF (trans-exclusionary radical feminist), J.K. Rowling. Other followers agreed with Miller and applauded her for speaking out on the highly controversial topic.

Singer Bette Midler landed in hot water with the far left — for the second time in two days — when her attempt to insult the United States Supreme Court backfired in spectacular fashion.
Midler has been decrying the Court&#8217;s 6-3 <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/aoc-is-getting-her-nails-done-as-an-act-of-reclamation-after-dobbs-decision/">decision</a> in Dobbs v. Jackson Women&#8217;s Health Organization — which included a 5-4 decision <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/five-reasons-to-celebrate-the-overturning-of-roe/">overturning</a> landmark abortion cases Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey — since it was handed down in late June, and Tuesday was no exception.
The tweet that prompted the backlash was a group photo of the court members, with all but the three liberal justices — Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and the since-retired Stephen Breyer — edited to look as though they were part of the Taliban, the medieval Islamic fundamentalist group back in charge of Afghanistan after President Joe Biden&#8217;s disastrous pullout.

Midler was not the only one to draw that comparison — singer Barbra Streisand referred to the Court as &#8220;the American Taliban&#8221; after the decision was handed down, and singer Patti LuPone asked, &#8220;What is the difference between the Taliban and the Christian Right? I&#8217;ll now add the Supreme Court. America is on her knees.&#8221;
But shortly after the &#8220;Hocus Pocus&#8221; star fired off her tweet, critics came for her, asking why she couldn&#8217;t complain about the Court without dragging Muslims into the conversation. One was Marc Lamont Hill, a Temple University professor who was fired by CNN 2018 amid widespread accusations of anti-semitism.
&#8220;Wow. Bette Midler is on a roll this week. From transphobic to Islamophobic,&#8221; <a href="https://twitter.com/marclamonthill/status/1544501375815630848">tweeted</a> Hill, who gave a speech to the UN in which he accused Israel of &#8220;ethnic cleansing&#8221; and called for an end to Israel &#8220;from the river to the sea,&#8221; a phrase borrowed from terrorist Hamas leaders.
Other hard-core leftists objected to evoking the Taliban as a metaphor for extremism, despite the Afghan group&#8217;s well-known policies of brutality and oppression of women.
Author Laila Lalami <a href="https://twitter.com/LailaLalami/status/1544473865945878528">added</a>, &#8220;Can&#8217;t you people ever fight extremism without being Islamophobic? Muslims aren&#8217;t your rhetorical tool.&#8221;

Call this for what it is—100% ‘Christian’ nationalism.&#8221;

Wade being overturned. In a 6-3 decision, the United States Supreme Court voted to uphold a Mississippi law, and that ruling overturned Roe.

However, using terms that the woke mob finds not inclusive, like &#8220;women,&#8221; landed her in a host of trouble, and she was labeled &#8220;right wing&#8221; and a &#8220;TERF,&#8221; a derogatory acronym used by some leftists that stands for transgender-exclusionary radical feminists.
&#8220;Bette when we use those words we&#8217;re including trans men and non-binary people who are also impacted by this new ruling,&#8221; one user tweeted. &#8220;We&#8217;re not erasing women— we&#8217;re including those who are forgotten.&#8221;
&#8220;Since there&#8217;s women who reject the word woman no other women can use it?&#8221; another wrote. &#8220;Sounds a lot like what the patriarchy would say….&#8221;
Another tweeted, &#8220;Very disappointed to see anti-trans TERF speak from such an icon, and someone who has such a devoted fan base amongst LGBTQIA+ folx.&#8221;

While another wrote, &#8220;Congratulations Bette, you&#8217;re now right wing.&#8221;

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/come-armed-gun-control-advocate-bette-midler-sends-out-tweet-to-protest-nra-conference">76-year-old actress</a> has been very active on social media lately as she&#8217;s raged over the United States Supreme Court&#8217;s decision to overturn the landmark 1973 ruling as a result of the decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women&#8217;s Health Organization. The ruling recognizes that there is no constitutional right to an abortion and returns the issue to the states to pass abortion legislation, as <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/victory-pro-life-leaders-react-to-overturn-of-roe-v-wade">The Daily Wire</a> previously reported.
In one of her latest posts she said the medical prescription Viagra, which is used to treat men with erectile dysfunction, should be banned now that the right of abortion has been left up to the state a person lives in.
