Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) advised his constituents to pass on the new $1,000 seed investment from the U.S. Treasury for children simply because it has President Donald Trump&#8217;s name attached to it. 
A Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-secret-weapon-that-will-supercharge-the-trump-accounts-for-newborns">analysis</a> found that Trump Accounts have the potential to turn into $362,000 by the time a child turns 18, but Thompson wants people in Mississippi, America&#8217;s poorest state, to stay away from the president&#8217;s new economic initiative.
&#8220;It&#8217;s safe to say, I would pass on a Trump account,&#8221; Thompson <a href="https://x.com/BennieGThompson/status/2074167515714916374?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">said</a> on Monday. &#8220;Trump University already taught us what happens when his name is on the brochure. Does a $25 million settlement ring a bell?&#8221;
Thompson’s recommendation on Monday was based on Trump University, a for-profit wealth institute created by Trump in 2005 that was shut down in 2010. Trump University educated people on real estate and wealth creation with attendees paying for bootcamps and mentorship programs from $1,500 to $35,000. 
Trump Accounts, which launched on July 4, are investment accounts for children created by the United States government that will be around long after Trump’s presidency. 
The White House shot back at Thompson, saying, “Telling your constituents to pass up on wealth because you hate President Trump is a seriously deranged — but not surprising — move from you.” 
Thompson, who represents one of the poorest districts in America, did not respond to a request for additional comment on the matter from the Daily Wire. 
Thompson has about <a href="https://www.quiverquant.com/congresstrading/politician/Bennie%20G.%20Thompson-T000193/net-worth">$3 million</a> in assets with fixed annuities, bank accounts, real estate, and exchange-traded funds being the largest concentrations of his wealth. Trump Accounts also invest in exchange-traded funds. Once children with a Trump Account turn 18, they can withdraw the money they accumulated penalty-free to purchase a house or pay for college. They can also choose to keep the money invested.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent believes watching the accounts grow will teach American children financial literacy. The Treasury Department called Trump Accounts a real-time laboratory of financial literacy, with children and parents able to check the daily status of the Trump Account through the official app and ask questions of why the account is up or down that day. 
Parents are able to contribute $5,000 a year to help grow the account with employers able to help up to $2,500 of the total amount. Grandparents, other relatives, friends, and even the child themselves can also help make contributions to the account. Based on historical figures from 2007, if the account was invested in the S&amp;P 500, a fund made up of the 500 largest American companies, the Trump account would be valued at $5,900 if left untouched. With the yearly employer contribution the accounts would have grown to $183,933, and with the maximum $5,000 contribution, the account would rise to $361,959. 
If the account had stayed invested until age 65, it would be worth nearly $45 million. Parents can set up an account for their children on the official Trump Account <a href="https://trumpaccounts.gov/">webpage</a>. All children under the age of 18 are eligible for an account, and children born between 2025 and 2028 qualify for the $1,000 seed investment.

Funding for the Department of Homeland Security resumed after a 75-day shutdown — but Democrats are already threatening to cut funding again in September if their demands are not met.
Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), a ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee, said Democrats would “absolutely” shut down DHS again if Republicans do not agree to proposed reforms to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) — such as banning law enforcement officers from wearing masks and requiring judicial warrants for immigration-related arrests.
“In America, police shouldn’t wear masks while walking the streets,” Thompson said, ignoring the dramatic uptick in threats and violent assaults against immigration enforcement officers and their families. “They need identification, they need cameras, and they need judicial warrants.”

The House of Representatives ended the record-setting shutdown on Thursday after passing a bill funding most of the DHS — including the Transportation Security Administration and the Secret Service — through the end of September. ICE and Customs and Border Patrol were left out of the measure. Republicans are relying on a reconciliation bill — which would let the Senate bypass the 60-vote procedural threshold and thus the Democrats’ demands — to move ahead with funding for ICE and CBP.
The shutdown began in February after Democrats refused to approve DHS funding unless Republicans agreed to include sweeping federal immigration enforcement reforms. Despite the hardships shouldered by everyday Americans during such shutdowns, Thompson was clear that Democrats are willing to trigger another shutdown if they do not get what they want.
CNN&#8217;s Victor Blackwell pressed Thompson on his answer, asking whether Democrats were willing to force government employees to go without pay again.
“When you say ‘absolutely,’ that suggests that there could be another shutdown, and there could be another lapse in pay for those TSA workers, the Coast Guard, if Democrats withhold those votes at the end of September,” Blackwell said.
“Absolutely. Victor, look, we have to stand for democracy. If we have to fight for it, there has to be sacrifice,&#8221; Thompson added, apparently unconcerned with the fact that it would be average American families making the &#8220;sacrifice&#8221; he was so quick to offer.

Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) interrupted a Congressional testimony that detailed the rise in violence against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and placed the blame on Democratic politicians, attempting to shut down the speaker by arguing that the testimony was outside the bounds of the Homeland Security Committee hearing.
The exchange came on Wednesday during a hearing in which Mike Howell, the president of the Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project, blasted Democrats for driving the increasing attacks on federal immigration agents.
Howell said he addressed the committee to “plead&#8221; with Democrats &#8220;to stand down on their threats on the men and women of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.”
“The violence is getting out of control, and it is fueled by the demagoguery of politicians, whether it is one of your members telling Axios that there needs to be blood to grab the attention of the press and the public, another saying civility isn’t working and to prepare for violence, or even a member of this committee being arrested for forcibly impeding and interfering with federal officials, this escalation deserves condemnation,” Howell charged. “It needs to stop and it needs to stop now. Assaults against ICE officers are up over 830 percent.”

But Rep. Thompson interrupted Howell’s testimony, claiming that it was &#8220;outside the scope&#8221; of the committee hearing, which focused on the role of non-governmental organizations in facilitating mass illegal immigration into the United States under the Biden administration.
ICE agents have faced numerous instances of violence in the last several months, with <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/fbi-captures-former-marine-corps-reservist-accused-shooting-ice-officers-texas-detention-center">armed extremists</a> even shooting at federal agents.
Other left-wing activists, including some formally affiliated with the Democratic Party, have sought to obstruct the operation of ICE agents as they enforce federal law, The Daily Wire has detailed.

President Joe Biden took a wave of backlash after it was announced on Thursday that he planned to honor Rep. Cheney had been on a short list of potential &#8220;pre-emptive pardons&#8221; that were reportedly the subject of discussion in the White House, with the stated goal being to insulate her from prosecution that could stem from her role in the January 6th Committee&#8217;s investigation. On Wednesday, the House Freedom Caucus said Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/bennie-thompson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bennie Thompson</a> (D-MS) should not be allowed to serve on the bipartisan task force to investigate the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump because he introduced a bill that could strip Trump of Secret Service protection under certain conditions.
The group of a few dozen conservative members also pushed for Thompson, who served as chairman of the now-defunct January 6 Committee, to be removed as the top Democrat on the Homeland Security Committee — which has oversight of the Secret Service.
&#8220;In April, Rep. Bennie Thompson launched an effort with other radical progressive Democrats to deny Secret Service protection to President Trump — legislation that he continues to defend even after the attempted assassination on July 13,&#8221; the caucus said in a <a href="https://x.com/freedomcaucus/status/1816097861974495703/photo/1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>.

The group concluded, &#8220;Americans cannot trust that he will be an unbiased arbiter of the facts in the effort to get to the bottom of the greatest failure of the Secret Service in more than three decades.&#8221;

Thompson has faced blowback for legislation he <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/former-january-6-panel-chair-unveils-bill-that-could-strip-trump-of-secret-service-protection" target="_blank" rel="noopener">introduced</a> in April that could strip a protectee of Secret Service protection if this person is convicted of a felony that is punishable with prison time of at least one year and sentenced.
Trump is not mentioned <a href="https://democrats-homeland.house.gov/imo/media/doc/disgraced_former_protectees_act_text.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in the bill</a>, but, in May a jury <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/verdict-trump-found-guilty-on-all-charges-in-hush-money-case" target="_blank" rel="noopener">convicted</a> Trump on dozens of felony counts in a New York hush-money case. Sentencing has been <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/judge-approves-delay-for-trump-sentencing-after-supreme-court-immunity-ruling" target="_blank" rel="noopener">postponed</a> until at least September as Trump seeks to get the <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/trump-asks-judge-toss-hush-money-conviction-dismiss/story?id=111807026" target="_blank" rel="noopener">conviction thrown out</a>, but the former president could get prison time.
As <a href="https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2024/jul/13/secret-service-faces-questions-after-donald-trump-/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">noted</a> by The Washington Times, Thompson insisted his bill &#8220;would not have affected the Secret Service’s presence&#8221; during the shooting at the Pennsylvania rally and will only apply to Trump if he gets sentenced to prison and is in the custody of another law enforcement agency.
Thompson repeated that claim during a hearing on Tuesday when he stressed that his bill &#8220;makes clear that when a protectee is sentenced and remanded to the custody of prison officials, the Secret Service is able to hand off the prisoner in an orderly fashion,&#8221; <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/07/23/us-news/gopers-slam-dem-bill-that-would-strip-trump-of-security-detail-in-prison-ask-mr-epsteins-family/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">per the New York Post</a>.
But Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), a member of the Freedom Caucus, and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) have <a href="https://x.com/RepThomasMassie/status/1816124448086294649" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pushed back</a> on Thompson&#8217;s claim by pointing out that the text of the legislation <a href="https://x.com/chiproytx/status/1816133955646869881" target="_blank" rel="noopener">does not mention</a> the requirement about incarceration.
A list of members on the bipartisan task force to investigate the Trump rally shooting is expected to be <a href="https://x.com/MZanona/status/1816130607363043428" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released</a> on Thursday.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) <a href="https://x.com/MZanona/status/1816129642904051743" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told Punchbowl News reporter Melanie Zanona</a> he did not think Thompson would be a &#8220;good choice&#8221; for the panel. He also said he spoke to Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) about it and does not think it&#8217;s &#8220;gonna be an issue.&#8221;
<a href="https://x.com/emilybrooksnews/status/1816135746346164291" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Hill&#8217;s Emily Brooks</a> noted on X that Thompson &#8220;seemed slightly bewildered&#8221; by the House Freedom Caucus statement. &#8220;I don’t even want to be on it,&#8221; Thompson told her. &#8220;I’ve never expressed an interest.&#8221;
Thompson also reportedly <a href="https://x.com/emilybrooksnews/status/1816129223142064621" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> he would remain as ranking member while a spokesperson for Jeffries told the Freedom Caucus to &#8220;pipe down.&#8221;

Just a few months before Saturday&#8217;s assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, a House Democrat introduced a bill that would strip Trump of his Secret Service protection if he is sentenced to prison.
Representative Bennie Thompson (D-MS) <a href="https://democrats-homeland.house.gov/news/legislation/ranking-member-thompson-introduces-legislation-to-ensure-no-secret-service-protection-for-convicted-felons-sentenced-to-prison" target="_blank" rel="noopener">introduced</a> the &#8220;Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable Former Protectees Act&#8221; or the &#8220;DISGRACED Former Protectees Act.&#8221;
The <a href="https://democrats-homeland.house.gov/imo/media/doc/disgraced_former_protectees_act_text.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bill</a> would automatically terminate Secret Service protection for anyone convicted of a felony and sentenced to prison. Prison authorities would be responsible for their safety rather than the Secret Service.
Thompson introduced the bill back in April, more than a month before Trump was convicted of 34 charges in the hush money case relating to porn performer Stormy Daniels.
&#8220;Unfortunately, current law doesn’t anticipate how Secret Service protection would impact the felony prison sentence of a protectee — even a former President,&#8221; Thompson said in a statement at the time.
&#8220;It is regrettable that it has come to this, but this previously unthought-of scenario could become our reality,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Therefore, it is necessary for us to be prepared and update the law so the American people can be assured that protective status does not translate into special treatment — and that those who are sentenced to prison will indeed serve the time required of them.&#8221;
Thompson also grabbed headlines over the weekend after one of his staffers <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/07/14/us-news/dem-staffer-axed-over-post-wishing-trump-shooter-had-lessons/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">posted</a> on social media that she hoped the gunman who shot Trump in his ear “wouldn’t miss next time.”
“I don’t condone violence but please get you some shooting lessons so you don’t miss next time ooops that wasn’t me talking,” Jacqueline Marsaw, Thompson&#8217;s field director, wrote on Facebook Saturday evening shortly after the assassination attempt on Trump.
Marsaw also wrote that the shooting “couldn’t [have] happened to a nicer fellow,” although she also called it “staged.”
“That’s what your hate speech got you!” she wrote.
Thompson later confirmed that Marsaw was no longer working for him.
At a Saturday rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a gunman attempted to assassinate Trump from a nearby rooftop, firing a bullet that grazed the former president’s ear before the Secret Service evacuated Trump.
Law enforcement returned fire immediately, killing the shooter. At least one rallygoer was killed, and two others were injured.
Footage of the incident showed Trump ducking behind the podium before being escorted away by the Secret Service with blood on his ear and face. He raised his fist as he left and shouted &#8220;Fight!&#8221; to the crowd.
Thompson is the current ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee and previously chaired the House January 6th Committee.
The Secret Service bill was co-sponsored by Representatives Troy Carter (D-LA), Barbara Lee (D-CA), Frederica Wilson (D-FL), Yvette Clarke (D-NY), Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ), Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), Joyce Beatty (D-OH), and Steve Cohen (D-TN).

A prominent House Democrat&#8217;s staffer who posted to social media about the gunman needing &#8220;shooting lessons so you don’t miss next time&#8221; — after former President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> survived an assassination attempt — is out of the job.
Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/bennie-thompson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bennie Thompson</a> (D-MS), who served as chairman of the now-defunct January 6 Committee, confirmed on Sunday the ouster of the aide — field director Jacqueline Marsaw — as the congressman faced mounting calls to fire her over the comment.
&#8220;I was made aware of a post made by a staff member and she is no longer in my employment,&#8221; Thompson said, <a href="https://x.com/aishahhasnie/status/1812536643917672475" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to Fox News</a>.
In the attack at Trump&#8217;s campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, the former president was shot in the ear, one bystander was killed, and two other attendees were seriously injured.
The Secret Service said its personnel &#8220;neutralized&#8221; the shooter, who was seen on a rooftop approximately 150 yards away from the stage where Trump had been speaking.
Afterwards, Marsaw posted to Facebook, &#8220;I don’t condone violence but please get you some shooting lessons so you don’t miss next time ooops that wasn’t me talking.&#8221;
The post was deleted, but not before a screenshot was taken and shared to social media. The <a href="https://x.com/MSGOP/status/1812297287843876973" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mississippi GOP</a> and others soon began calling for Marsaw&#8217;s employment to be terminated.

The Natchez Democrat <a href="https://www.natchezdemocrat.com/2024/07/13/natchez-womans-social-media-post-on-trump-shooting-draws-national-criticism/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> Marsaw said she took down the post following a request from a manager on Thompson&#8217;s staff.
&#8220;I got overwhelmed in the moment,&#8221; Marsaw said. &#8220;I am a diehard Democrat.&#8221;
The local news outlet in Mississippi also pointed out Marsaw &#8220;said her post was meant for its comic value and not to be taken seriously.&#8221;
Congressman Thompson himself posted to X a <a href="https://x.com/BennieGThompson/status/1812275735039730041" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> that denounced political violence and voiced relief that Trump had survived the attack.
&#8220;There is no room in American democracy for political violence. I am grateful for law enforcement’s fast response to this incident,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I am glad the former President is safe, and my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved.&#8221;

The Mississippi Republican Party responded to Marsaw’s comments, calling on the Mississippi Democratic Party to “repudiate these despicable statements” and Thompson to “FIRE his field director for condoning the attempted assassination of President [Trump].”
The comments from Marsaw came after former <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-trump-appears-to-be-shot-at-rally?topStoryPosition=1">President Donald Trump was shot</a> in the ear in an attempted assassination as the Republican presidential candidate gave a speech at a rally in Pennsylvania. Trump was rushed off the stage by Secret Service personnel as he pumped his fist and yelled, &#8220;Fight!&#8221;
A suspected shooter was &#8220;neutralized&#8221; by U.S. Secret Service personnel, according to the Secret Service. The Secret Service added that one spectator was killed and two others were &#8220;critically injured.&#8221;
Thompson, a Democrat from Mississippi’s Second Congressional District, is the ranking member of the House Committee on Homeland Security. He commented on the attempted assassination of former President Trump in a post on X which read “There is no room in American democracy for political violence. I am grateful for law enforcement’s fast response to this incident.”
“I am glad the former President is safe, and my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved,” Thompson went on to say.
Thompson previously attempted to <a href="https://democrats-homeland.house.gov/news/legislation/ranking-member-thompson-introduces-legislation-to-ensure-no-secret-service-protection-for-convicted-felons-sentenced-to-prison">strip Trump of Secret Service protection</a> with a piece of legislation called “Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable Former Protectees Act.”
“This legislation would reform the U.S. Secret Service’s protective mission by automatically terminating Secret Service protection for those who have been sentenced to prison following conviction for a Federal or State felony,” a press release advertising the legislation reads.
Neither Rep. Thompson nor the Mississippi Democratic Party have responded to a Daily Wire request for comment.

&#8220;Unfortunately, current law doesn’t anticipate how Secret Service protection would impact the felony prison sentence of a protectee — even a former President. It is regrettable that it has come to this, but this previously unthought-of scenario could become our reality,&#8221; Thompson said.
&#8220;Therefore, it is necessary for us to be prepared and update the law so the American people can be assured that protective status does not translate into special treatment — and that those who are sentenced to prison will indeed serve the time required of them,&#8221; he added.

Should Thompson&#8217;s bill get approved — a long shot considering Republicans control the House and largely back Trump — <a href="https://democrats-homeland.house.gov/imo/media/doc/disgraced_former_protectees_act_text.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">it would amend</a> a section of the U.S. Code to &#8220;terminate&#8221; Secret Service protection for &#8220;any person upon sentencing following conviction for a Federal or State offense that is punishable for a term of imprisonment of at least one year.&#8221;
The bill is called the &#8220;Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable Former Protectees Act,&#8221; or the &#8220;DISGRACED Former Protectees Act&#8221; for short, and Thompson&#8217;s office said it several co-sponsors among fellow Democrats.

House Republicans face a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/slim-house-gop-majority-gets-narrower" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tight margin</a> as they contend with vacancies and absences within their own ranks, but Green said last weekend that he believes there will be <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/homeland-security-chair-says-we-have-the-votes-to-impeach-mayorkas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">enough support</a> to ultimately impeach Mayorkas when it comes to a House floor vote. Still, the effort faces long odds in the Democrat-controlled Senate.
Rep. Bennie Thompson (R-MS), the top Democrat on the Homeland Security Committee, encouraged the House to reject what he called a &#8220;sham&#8221; resolution. &#8220;What is glaringly missing from these articles is any real charge or even a shred of evidence of high crimes or misdemeanors — the Constitutional standard for impeachment,&#8221; he added in a statement on Sunday.
When pressed on &#8220;Fox News Sunday&#8221; on the prospect of the impeachment articles going nowhere in the Senate, Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) said &#8220;I think it&#8217;s important we respond to the American people&#8221; after pinning millions of border encounters, including people on the terrorist watchlist, and fentanyl deaths on Mayorkas.

DHS <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/xlibrary/opa/24_0128_OPA_memo.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released a memo</a> to reporters on Sunday that argued Mayorkas has &#8220;upheld and enforced&#8221; border security and immigration laws and seeks to refute &#8220;false allegations&#8221; of lying about operational control during testimony and dereliction of duty.
&#8220;This markup is just more of the same political games from House Homeland Security Committee (CHS) Republicans. They don’t want to fix the problem; they want to campaign on it,&#8221; the memo said.
&#8220;That’s why they have undermined efforts to achieve bipartisan solutions and ignored the facts, legal scholars and experts, and even the Constitution itself in their quest to baselessly impeach Secretary Mayorkas,&#8221; it added. &#8220;This farce of an impeachment is a distraction from other vital national security priorities and the work Congress should be doing to actually fix our broken immigration laws.&#8221;
