A mother and father were arrested after their 3-month-old daughter was found dead Sunday night among trash in a wooded area near Yankee Stadium.
During Damion Comager’s arraignment on Wednesday, prosecutors alleged that the pair dressed their daughter and placed her in a stroller so they could wheel her out of their Bronx shelter without anyone noticing she was dead, the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/05/31/parents-of-infant-dumped-in-nyc-snuck-her-out-after-she-was-dead-prosecutors/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. Comager, 23, was arraigned on charges of murder, manslaughter, and concealment of a human corpse.
Comager was at the 44th precinct on Monday, Fox 5 <a href="https://www.fox5ny.com/news/bronx-baby-found-in-woods-near-homeless-shelter" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>, and told reporters as he left: “I love my daughter. I’m sorry. It was a mistake.”
Prosecutors allege that Comager shook the infant, causing her death, and then worked with his girlfriend, 20-year-old Ivana Paolozzi, to dump her remains in a wooded area. Comager’s father, Donald, reportedly told police that his son had shaken the infant. He then panicked, resulting in the gruesome stroller walk.
“Both defendants changed her diaper, placed her in a onesie and a hat, wrapped her in a blanket, and placed her in the stroller,” Assistant District Attorney Serena Newell said in court on Wednesday, according to the Post.
Newell reportedly told Judge Matthew Bondy that surveillance video showed the pair with the stroller containing their dead daughter, Genevieve Rozzlyn Comager.
“The defendant pushed that stroller containing Genevieve’s corpse out of the shelter where they were living,” Newell added, “successfully prompting no inspection or questions from the shelter staff.”
The couple then “placed their daughter Genevieve’s body into a garbage bag and disposed of said garbage bag and the baby stroller into a wooded area amongst massive trash,” Newell said.

It was Comager’s father who called the police, he told Fox 5.
&#8220;It’s difficult you know. That was my first son my first son my first born and that’s my first grand baby, and I don’t have none of them right now,” the elder Comager said, according to Fox 5.
Comager appeared in court wearing a black T-shirt and his dreadlocks in a ponytail, the Post reported. He said nothing except to whisper to his attorney. Comager was held without bail and must return to court on Friday.
In contrast, Paolozzi was charged only with concealment of a human corpse, tampering with evidence, and obstructing a governmental administration. She was arraigned after Comager and released with monitoring, as her charges make her ineligible for bail due to New York’s controversial 2019 bail reform law.
In court, ADA Newell argued that Paolozzi “poses a significant flight risk” since she holds a Swiss passport and is in the U.S. on an expired visa.
Paolozzi is alleged to have lied to city Administration for Children’s Services investigators on Sunday about her daughter’s whereabouts.
“Ivana Paolozzi stated that the defendants and their daughter, Genevieve Comager, were all alive, safe and had relocated to Louisiana,” said the criminal complaint against her, according to the Post.
Baby Genevieve, however, had already been dead for two weeks, according to prosecutors.

The Federal Trade Commission launched an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/antitrust" target="_blank" rel="noopener">inquiry</a> on Wednesday into the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/baby-formula" target="_blank" rel="noopener">baby formula</a> shortages which have <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/supply-chain" target="_blank" rel="noopener">harmed</a> infants and strained their parents over the past several months.
The agency, which centers on consumer protection and the enforcement of antitrust laws, issued a <a href="https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/ftc_gov/pdf/Baby%20Formula%20RFI_final.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">call</a> for public comments about factors that may have led to the shortages that started at the beginning of last year after a series of safety incidents. Officials invited families who have experienced “fraud, deception, or scams when attempting to purchase infant formula,” as well as retailers who have seen “extremely large purchases of infant formula in excess of a single family’s need,” to submit their insights.
&#8220;We have been monitoring and will continue to monitor the ongoing infant formula shortage, which is causing enormous anxiety, fear, and financial burden for American families,&#8221; FTC Chair Lina Khan said in a <a href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2022/05/federal-trade-commission-launches-inquiry-infant-formula-crisis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>. &#8220;The FTC is launching a public inquiry to identify the factors that contributed to the shortage or hampered our ability to respond to it. Learning from this experience can help determine how we can minimize the risk of similar shortages in the markets for other life-sustaining products.&#8221;
The move from the FTC comes after Abbott Nutrition temporarily shuttered a baby formula facility in Sturgis, Michigan, last year and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/abbott-nutrition-reopens-baby-formula-plant-at-center-of-nationwide-shortage" target="_blank" rel="noopener">initiated</a> a voluntary recall of several products over concerns about bacterial contamination, a move which came after the FDA found standing water, roof leaks, bacteria growth, and inadequate hygiene in the facility. The sudden absence of EleCare, a formula for children who are unable to digest other products, from the marketplace was especially worrisome to parents and government officials.
Reckitt, another consumer goods company, introduced another nationwide recall of baby formula earlier this year and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/baby-formula-recalled-nationwide-over-possible-bacterial-contamination" target="_blank" rel="noopener">revealed</a> that two batches of ProSobee Simply Plant-Based Infant Formula may have been contaminated with a species of bacteria possibly deadly to infants.
The inquiry from the FTC will also examine the impact of FDA regulations on the “number of infant formula suppliers, capital investment, and total manufacturing capacity” of the product. The agency asked public commenters to report “regulatory barriers that have prevented companies located outside the United States from entering the infant formula market.”

Some Democratic officials meanwhile <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-yorks-democratic-ag-goes-after-price-gouging-amid-formula-shortage" target="_blank" rel="noopener">contended</a> that producers were engaged in price gouging.
Worldwide lockdowns and public health mandates fostered unpredictable supply chain shocks over the past three years, contributing to inflation in many countries. Prices for baby food and formula rose nearly 9% year-over-year as of last month, according to <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/cpi.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">data</a> from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and saw costs increase more than 4% on a month-to-month basis.
Robert Ford, chief executive of Abbott Nutrition, previously apologized for the shortages in an opinion <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/baby-formula-ceo-has-a-message-for-parents-hit-by-nationwide-shortage" target="_blank" rel="noopener">piece</a>, admitting that his firm “fell short” of expectations but insisting that the shutdown was necessary. “We believe our voluntary recall was the right thing to do,” he wrote. “We will not take risks when it comes to the health of children. The data collected during the investigation, genetic sequencing, retained product samples and available product from the four complaints did not find any connection between our products and the four reported illnesses in children.”

She went on to thank the strip club for “making dreams come true&#8221; and being “so kind.” In a follow-up, the soon-to-be first-time mom wrote, “baby’s first strip club extravaganza.”
Photos included shots of Baldwin wearing revealing black lingerie and sporting a pink wig reminiscent of Natalie Portman’s stripper character in the movie “Closer.” The celeb can be seen hugging her mom, Kim Basinger, while covered in dollar bills. 
Other images show stripper performers performing lap dances for the guests and dancing around poles while wearing fake pregnant bellies. There’s also a photo of a pink-frosted cake that says, “Baby’s first strip club” and personalized napkins featuring the baby’s sonogram.
Baldwin’s followers weren’t all on board for the explicit display.

Along with many negative comments, some followers applauded the surprising baby shower theme. “Wow, normally baby showers are such a bore, this one, and the other hand looks like the best baby shower ever,” one account said.
Baldwin announced she was pregnant on December 31, 2022, by sharing a sonogram photo on Instagram. The child&#8217;s father is her musician boyfriend, André Allen Anjos, known professionally as RAC.
In January, the model acknowledged that pregnancy was more challenging than expected. &#8220;I am grateful but I am struggling,&#8221; Baldwin <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CnkTlfWv6xU/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=d6b729ba-ec31-455b-920b-2fb5a8523aa2">said</a> at the time. &#8220;Pregnancy is hard. It takes so much out of you. I wasn&#8217;t ready for that.&#8221;

If, as expected, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/minnesota">Minnesota</a> Democratic governor signs a bill just passed by the Minnesota Senate, the state will permit a right to abortion at any time of a woman’s pregnancy.
“Every individual who becomes pregnant has a fundamental right to continue the pregnancy and give birth, or obtain an abortion, and to make autonomous decisions about how to exercise this fundamental right,” the bill, known as the Protect Reproductive Options Act, <a href="https://www.revisor.mn.gov/bills/text.php?number=HF1&amp;type=bill&amp;version=0&amp;session=ls93&amp;session_year=2023&amp;session_number=0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">states</a>. Every Democrat voted for the bill; every Republican opposed it. Walz has stated he will sign the bill into law.
Late term-abortions are often performed by using gruesome procedures that can include crushing or dismembering the baby before it is removed from the mother’s body, or in some cases, injecting a lethal drug in to the baby’s heart.
“Minnesotans don’t support elective third-trimester abortion. They just don’t. But that’s what this extreme bill entrenches in our state law: the right to abort any baby for any reason at any time up to birth,” Cathy Blaeser, the executive director for Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL) <a href="https://www.mccl.org/post/senate-votes-for-abortion-up-to-birth-in-minnesota" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “Under this bill, even babies who are old enough to live outside the womb and to feel excruciating pain have no protection from lethal violence. The extremism of H.F. 1 puts Minnesota in the same category as just a handful of countries around the world, including North Korea and China.”
“The lack of parental involvement allows the most heinous of criminals—human and sex traffickers—to hide behind the doors of the unlicensed, uninspected abortion facility,” she continued. “These traffickers are happily watching this legislature advance extreme, unfettered abortion bills that enable them to continue to traffic their victims.”
“We have a duty to answer the call of Minnesotans to truly protect those reproductive freedoms, to enshrine them not simply in case law, but in our statutory law,” stated the bill’s author, state senator Sen. Jennifer McEwen, as MPR <a href="https://www.mprnews.org/story/2023/01/28/minnesota-senate-votes-to-guarantee-abortion-rights-sends-bill-to-governor" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. “These are our values, this is the practice in Minnesota. This is what we believe.”
But GOP Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson countered, “Today we are not just codifying Roe v. Wade or Doe v. Gomez as the author has indicated. We are enacting the most extreme bill in the country regarding youth sterilization, late term abortions and public viability for a vast array of new reproductive rights.”
Republicans tried to amend the bill 35 times and failed each time, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/minnesota-senate-passes-abortion-bill-opponents-call-most-extreme-nation">Fox News</a> noted.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/police">Police</a> are now saying they believe a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/cartels">drug cartel</a> was behind the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mass-shooting">shooting</a> that killed six people in Central <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/california">California</a>, including a 6-month-old baby and her 17-year-old mother.
The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office <a href="https://abc30.com/goshen-shooting-six-people-killed-tulare-county-home-mother-baby-shot-drug-activity/12708739/">told</a> KFSN that the shooting occurred in Goshen just after 3:30 a.m. and that people who called 9-1-1 thought there was an active shooter in the neighborhood due to the number of shots they heard. Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-01-16/six-people-including-mother-and-baby-killed-in-tulare-county" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told the Los Angeles Times</a> that the crime is likely a targeted attack.
“I think it’s specifically connected to the cartel,” Boudreaux told the outlet. “The level of violence … this was not your run-of-the-mill low-end gang member.”
“If [they] are specifically shooting everyone in the head, they know what they are doing &#8230; [and] they are comfortable with what they are doing,” the sheriff added.
The names and ages of all the victims have not been released, but authorities told the Times that some appeared to be family members.
Boudreaux also told the outlet that a sheriff’s deputy found the youngest victim, the 6-month-old baby, was found cradled in her 17-year-old mother’s arms in a ditch outside of the home where the massacre occurred. Both had been shot in the head.
A third female victim, an elderly woman, appeared to have been “shot in her sleep,” Boudreaux said. Three men were also killed, one of whom was alive when deputies arrived but died later at the hospital. At least one of the men will need to be identified using DNA testing because his face was so damaged by the weapon or weapons used in the attack.
Two women survived the shooting by hiding in a trailer home, the Times reported. They told police that people on the property saw the shooters approaching via surveillance cameras.
“They could see two men sneaking onto the property … but by the time they came on [the video feed], it was too late to do anything,” Boudreaux said.
County Supervisor Eddie Valero said the deaths were “everyone’s worst nightmare.”
“These senseless acts of violence, especially with infants, children and young adults, have no place in our communities,” Valero said in a statement to the Times.
Police also said they believe there were two shooters and that the incident was related to gang activity. Authorities continue to search for clues as to what motivated the shooting, the Visalia Times Delta <a href="https://www.visaliatimesdelta.com/story/news/2023/01/16/multiple-dead-in-goshen-gang-shooting-including-infant/69811812007/">reported</a>. A search warrant had been served on the house just one week prior, with police looking for narcotics. Boudreaux told the Times that a man was arrested during the search and that guns, marijuana, and methamphetamine had been seized.
Tulare County is a hotbed of drug trafficking, with cartels moving drugs from Mexico to Tulare and on to the rest of the United States. Jose Maria Guizar Valencia, former leader of the Zetas cartel, was born in Tulare, while others involved in Mexico’s drug wars have been tied to the county as well, the Times reported.

Six people, including a 6-month-old baby and 17-year-old mother, were killed following a shooting in central California early Monday morning.
The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office <a href="https://abc30.com/goshen-shooting-six-people-killed-tulare-county-home-mother-baby-shot-drug-activity/12708739/">told</a> KFSN that the shooting occurred in Goshen just after 3:30 a.m. and that people who called 9-1-1 thought there was an active shooter in the neighborhood due to the number of shots they heard.
When police arrived at the residence, they immediately noticed two victims in the doorway of a home, with a third nearby. Police found six total victims, with one person still alive. That person died after being taken to the hospital, Fox 26 <a href="https://kmph.com/news/local/shots-fired-deputies-investigating-in-tulare-county-sheriffs-goshen-ca-california-morning-heard-information-anonymous">reported</a>. The two victims who were minors both had been shot in the head, police told the outlet.
Police also said they believe there were two shooters and that the incident was related to gang activity. Millions of Fisher-Price Rock’n Play Sleeper infant seats are being <a href="https://kfor.com/news/consumer/millions-of-fisher-price-baby-seats-recalled-after-more-than-100-infants-die/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recalled</a> an additional time after the seats have now been connected to the deaths of over 100 babies. 
Around 4.7 million Fisher-Price Rock’n Play Sleepers were first <a href="https://www.wtnh.com/news/millions-of-fisher-price-baby-seats-recalled-after-more-than-100-infants-die/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recalled</a> in 2019 after over 30 babies had reportedly passed away. However, over 70 more deaths have been reported since they were originally recalled.
Eight of those reportedly transpired after the recall was declared. 
In 2019, the American Academy of Pediatrics <a href="https://publications.aap.org/aapnews/news/9742?autologincheck=redirected" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pushed</a> for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to take the baby sleeper off the market. The demands came with reference to a Consumer Reports <a href="https://www.consumerreports.org/recalls/fisher-price-rock-n-play-sleeper-should-be-recalled-consumer-reports-says/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">investigation</a> that discovered 32 babies had died while in the baby seat since 2011, which included ten since 2015 that were discussed in a Fisher-Price and CPRSC safety alert <a href="https://www.cpsc.gov/Newsroom/News-Releases/2019/CPSC-ALERT-CPSC-and-Fisher-Price-Warn-Consumers-About-Fisher-Price-Rock-N-Play-Due-to-Reports-of-Death-When-Infants-Roll-Over-in-the-Product" target="_blank" rel="noopener">release</a> in 2019.
“I am thrilled that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Fisher-Price took the advice of the American Academy of Pediatrics and issued a recall of the Rock ‘n Play Sleeper,” Ben Hoffman, M.D., chair of the AAP Council on Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention said at the time. “This product is dangerous and I urge parents and caregivers to stop using it right away.” 
“As a pediatrician and a father, I know that infant sleep is a major concern for families, and pediatricians are ready to work with as many parents as possible to find solutions to help everyone sleep safely and soundly,” Hoffman noted. “We know that inclined sleepers like the Rock ‘n Play are not safe and put babies’ lives at risk. I am glad to see this product off the market and urge all parents to talk to their pediatricians about how to keep their babies safe during sleep time and any time.”
Fisher-Price <a href="https://www.consumerreports.org/recalls/fisher-price-rock-n-play-sleeper-should-be-recalled-consumer-reports-says/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Consumer Reports in the 2019 report about the investigation that it knew of around 32 deaths, but it did not think that &#8220;any deaths have been caused by the product,&#8221; pointing to &#8220;the many situations where a medical/health condition was identified as the cause of death, and/or those in which the product was clearly used in a manner contrary to the safety warnings and instructions.&#8221;
Early last year, Consumer Reports <a href="https://www.consumerreports.org/baby-product-recalls/deaths-linked-to-fisher-price-rock-n-play-after-recall-a1183945428/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that dozens of people who bought the sleeper were suing Fisher-Price and parent company Mattel, claiming that they were never notified about the recall. 
It’s common for companies to get low responses for recalls on items, but the situation was especially concerning.
“It’s outrageous that millions of these dangerous products could still be out there, with babies at risk of being seriously injured or killed,” Oriene Shin, Consumer Report’s product safety policy counsel, said at the time. “Fisher-Price has had years to get Rock ’n Plays out of people’s homes yet, at best, appears to have done the bare minimum. Slow and ineffective recalls can have terrible consequences, and parents deserve better from a company they rely on for safe baby and toddler products.”

In an interview with <a href="https://www.today.com/parents/mom-dad-newborn-daughter-birthday-scott-family-rcna63138" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TODAY</a>, the Scott family said that baby Lennon Kate was due to arrive on December 27th. “I didn’t want her to be born on my birthday at first because I wanted her to have her own day,” Cassidy Scott told TODAY. “The closer I got, Dylan talked me into it. He had me come around to the idea of wanting it to happen.”
But while the couple was out at a restaurant to celebrate their shared birthday, Cassidy&#8217;s water broke. “I started having contractions, and I was like, Oh my gosh, this might actually happen,” she said. “And so I didn’t really have a choice at that point. I had to come around.”
Cassidy was born on December 18, 1996. Dylan was born on the same day two years later, in 1998.

The couple told TODAY that family and friends are already encouraging the couple to try to have their next child on the same day. &#8220;[W]e’ll try, but you know, no problem,&#8221; said Cassidy.

The Biden administration’s Food and Drug Administration has approved the bivalent COVID vaccine for babies as young as six months old.
The new vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna are supposed to be given to babies in three doses. Bivalent vaccines differ from the previous mRNA vaccines in that they combine the original vaccine with a reformulation allowing the vaccine to attack the BA.4 and BA.5 viruses that sprang from the Omicron variant.
“More children now have the opportunity to update their protection against COVID-19 with a bivalent COVID-19 vaccine, and we encourage parents and caregivers of those eligible to consider doing so,” FDA Commissioner Robert M. Early Saturday morning, police received a call about an injured child on a street in Phoenix, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/arizona">Arizona</a>, near the city’s largest <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/homeless">homeless</a> encampment.
When police arrived, they found a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/babies">baby</a> that had been abandoned. The baby was pronounced dead on the scene by the Phoenix Fire Department, 12 News <a href="https://www.12news.com/article/news/local/valley/newborn-found-dead-in-central-phoenix/75-48ca5098-7a79-4fff-bb60-626b7a0bbd14">reported</a>.
Police said the infant was believed to have an estimated gestational age between 20 and 24 weeks. The body has been turned over to the Office of Medical Examiner for a postmortem investigation, while police look for information about how the baby was abandoned.
Joel Coplin, who lives near where the baby was found, told 12 News that the scene was “utterly horrific.”
&#8220;They thought it was a doll at first, but it wasn&#8217;t,&#8221; he told the outlet.
Coplin also said he saw the police outside and asked his neighbor about the situation later. His neighbor reportedly saw someone lighting something on fire.
&#8220;[He told me] his fiancé came and was trying to put the fire out, and then he went to stomp on it to put it out and realized it was a baby in there,&#8221; Coplin told the outlet. &#8220;He saw the head, a perfectly shaped head, and little arms, hands, legs, chest. He grabbed his fiance and turned away so she wouldn&#8217;t see it, and he was freaked out. He called 911.”
Coplin added that he wasn’t surprised that something like this would happen in the area.
&#8220;Anything can happen around here,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We&#8217;re right down here in &#8216;The Zone,&#8217; and anything and everything does happen.&#8221;
“The Zone,” is what locals call the homeless encampment, where upward of 1,000 people live in tents. The increase in the homeless population has led to a spike in crime in the area, with theft, assaults, and drugs plaguing the makeshift town, Fox 10 Phoenix <a href="https://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/crimes-zone-theft-assaults-drugs-unsanitary-conditions-plague-downtown-phoenix-tent-city">reported</a>.
The outlet found that since 2019, police have responded to 801 incidents within The Zone, 278 incidents in 2020 alone. So far this year, nearly 185 incidents have been called in as of September, putting 2022 on pace to surpass 2021’s total calls.
Thefts are the most commonly reported crime in The Zone, with almost 300 cases since 2019. In the past three years, police have also responded to 229 aggravated assault calls and 130 drug offenses, with fentanyl being one of the biggest concerns.
Robberies, rapes, and burglaries are also reported. There have been six reported murders and four reported arsons as well.
These are just the reported crimes. J.R., who has lived in The Zone for eight years, told Fox 10 that crime is underreported.

Government <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/lockdowns" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lockdowns</a> enacted in response to the spread of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/covid-19" target="_blank" rel="noopener">COVID</a> may have caused the “first major reversal” in nearly two decades for American <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/population" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fertility rates</a>, according to a new <a href="https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w30569/w30569.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">working paper</a> from the National Bureau of Economic Research.
The analysis, written by economists Martha Bailey, Janet Currie, and Hannes Schwandt noted that forecasts originally predicted a dramatic baby bust of 300,000 children to 500,000 children as a result of the lockdowns. Instead, births declined by only 76,000 more than the baseline, while American-born mothers saw a net increase in births of roughly 46,000 children by 2021.
The “baby bump” was therefore the first salient disruption to falling American birth rates since 2007 and was “large enough to reverse two years of declining fertility rates,” according to the working paper. The trend was most noticeable among mothers experiencing their first births and women under 25, suggesting that many women were led to “start their families sooner” amid the phenomena of the past two years.
“Early data from California shows the baby bonus has persisted through August 2022,” Bailey noted to The Daily Wire, adding that the researchers are still awaiting nationwide statistics. “Elevated birth rates for younger women also suggest that the long decline in childbearing for this group may be shifting.”
Commentators have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/elon-musk-warns-civilization-will-crumble-without-people-having-more-kids" target="_blank" rel="noopener">long discussed</a> the economic and cultural ramifications of declining American birth rates. Other nations, including China and Russia, recently implemented policies meant to encourage higher fertility, with the former eliminating its notorious <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/china-updates-child-policy-amid-population-growth-worries" target="_blank" rel="noopener">one-child policy</a> and the latter enacting <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/russia-to-give-1-million-rubles-to-women-who-birth-10-or-more-children" target="_blank" rel="noopener">financial incentives</a> for women who build large families.
Indeed, the number of births in the United States increased for the first time in more than seven years as of 2021, marking a 1% overall rise in births from 2020, according to <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/nchs_press_releases/2022/20220524.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">data</a> from the National Center for Health Statistics. In contrast, fertility declined 4% between 2019 and 2020.
The baby bump was also pronounced among women between 30 and 34 years old, according to the working paper, as well as women between 25 and 44 years old who had received a college degree. Highly educated individuals were “more likely to retain their jobs” during the lockdowns and transition to virtual work. Wealthy families likewise experienced higher economic stability as equity from the housing market and stock market increased their prosperity. Meanwhile, abortion facilities were “disrupted” or “completely shut down.”
“We think that increased flexibility in the workplace could be a major driver,” Currie explained to The Daily Wire. “We know that about 40% of days worked are still being worked from home as of June 2022. Also, we see the biggest fertility increases among college educated women, who are more likely to be able to work from home. These findings highlight the time costs of having children and the value parents place on the ability to work from home.”
Most of the decline in births was seen among foreign-born and nonresident women, who accounted for 23% of births as of 2019. Because the decrease in fertility among foreigners and migrants began at the “very beginning of the pandemic,” the authors of the paper suggested that government travel restrictions and a sudden unavailability of economic opportunities in the United States may have led to the decrease.
Nevertheless, without foreign-born women, the overall American birth rate “would be much lower and closer to other low-fertility countries found in Europe or Japan.” While the European Union saw a fertility rate of 1.53 children per woman as of 2018, Japan saw 1.42 children per woman, according to <a href="https://data.oecd.org/pop/fertility-rates.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">data</a> from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
