Sharks are getting a contact high as they swim through tropical waters, thanks in part to drug runners and careless tourists.
The buzz is real: Sharks swimming off the coast of Bermuda tested positive for cocaine, according to a new <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0269749126001880?via%3Dihub">study</a> published in the journal Environmental Pollution. 
The apex predators of the sea have also ingested other substances from humans, including caffeine and over-the-counter painkillers, the study noted. It’s all believed to be part of aquatic pollution generated by people on vacation. 
“Pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs are increasingly recognized as contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in marine environments, particularly in areas undergoing rapid urbanization and tourism-driven development,” the researchers wrote in the study.
Caffeine was the most commonly found substance in the 85 specimens tested around the remote island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. The study also detected acetaminophen and diclofenac, the active ingredients in Tylenol and Voltaren, as the next most common substances.
One of the sharks, a baby lemon shark in a nursery creek, tested positive for cocaine. Researchers said it was due to the animal biting down on discarded samples of the drug to determine what it was.
“They bite things to investigate and end up exposed,” study author Natascha Wosnick <a href="https://www.sciencenews.org/article/cocaine-sharks-drugs-bahamas-eleuthera">told</a> Science News of the findings. “It’s mostly because people are going there, peeing in the water and dumping their sewage in the water,” she told the outlet.
Sharks from other areas have tested positive for cocaine in the past, though none have tested positive in the Bahamas until this most recent study.
The topic of cocaine crazed animals was the hook of the 2023 film “Cocaine Bear” directed by Elizabeth Banks. The film was loosely based on true events that occurred in 1985 when a 175-pound black bear died of a cocaine overdose in Georgia after consuming a duffel bag of drugs dropped by a smuggler.
Animals messing around with other toxic human substances have been making headlines lately. A viral <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/DWTrK09kub4/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==">video</a> of a squirrel chewing on a vape device in London started making the rounds online, which led to conversations about wild critters being attracted to the fruity-smelling devices. 
“In the old days, you’d see lots of discarded cigarette butts, but I don’t remember squirrels running around with them,” Craig Shuttleworth, a red squirrel expert in the U.K., <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/03/23/squirrel-seen-vaping-in-london-park/">told</a> The Telegraph of the phenomenon. “It would be reasonable to assume that a vape would be more attractive than a normal tobacco product that’s not fruity.”
Unfortunately, the exposure to nicotine is harmful to squirrels and other wildlife.

After his five-year-old daughter fell overboard, a father dove off a Disney Dream cruise ship in a dramatic rescue, officials said.
The four-night cruise was returning to Fort Lauderdale on Sunday after making a trip to Disney’s Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point in the Bahamas. 
The father&#8217;s name has not been publicly released, but passenger Gar Frantz said he was on the fourth-floor deck when the incident occurred. He said he saw a child sitting on the railing of the cruise ship while a man took a picture, then the child fell overboard.
“We watched it, you could see two little things. &#8230; It was crazy, it was horrific,” Frantz said of seeing the tragedy unfold, per <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/disney-dream-overboard-rescue-rcna215994">NBC News</a>.

Another passenger, Gail Merrick, told the outlet that she saw and heard the commotion and noticed a yellow lifeboat in the water. 
“We came to find out that it was a child and then the father had gone in after the child, so we were watching with bated breath basically waiting for what would happen,” Merrick said.
A witness on the ship described the sound of the child hitting the water, per <a href="https://people.com/disney-cruise-passenger-describes-moment-dad-jumps-overboard-after-daughter-11764056">People</a>. “It sounded like hitting pavement, nothing like if you jump into a pool, it was so loud,” the woman, identified only as Chandler, told the outlet. “Then this awful scream from what I assume is the mother and then this massive splash.” 
She also uploaded <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@lifeofchandler/video/7521737117475573047?_r=1&amp;_t=ZT-8xe4AJfSHTT">footage</a> of the rescue to TikTok.
Disney confirmed that the cruise ship crew “swiftly rescued two guests from the water.”
“We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes,” a statement from the company said. “We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols.”

President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a> announced Monday that he would ban offshore drilling for more than 625 million acres of U.S. waters before President-elect Donald Trump is inaugurated. 
Biden&#8217;s prohibition through two presidential memoranda on new oil and natural gas leases will cover the entire East Coast and West Coast of the continental U.S., the eastern Gulf of Mexico, and parts of the Alaska coastline. The White House said the 1953 Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act gave Biden the authority to make such a sweeping ban on energy production.
“In protecting more than 625 million acres of the U.S. ocean from offshore drilling, President Biden has determined that the environmental and economic risks and harms that would result from drilling in these areas outweigh their limited fossil fuel resource potential,” the White House said in a statement. “With these withdrawals, President Biden is protecting coastal communities, marine ecosystems, and local economies – including fishing, recreation, and tourism – from oil spills and other impacts of offshore drilling.”
He previously used the same 1953 law to ban drilling for portions of the North Bering Sea and 2.8 million acres of the Beaufort Sea. 
“The withdrawals have no expiration date, and prohibit all future oil and natural gas leasing in the areas withdrawn,” the White House said.

The move from Biden comes just two weeks before President-elect Donald Trump takes office. Trump has promised to increase American oil production and make it easier for oil and gas companies to drill in U.S. waters.

An <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/ohio" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ohio</a> billionaire is planning on taking a deep sea submersible to the bottom of the ocean floor in the northern Atlantic to tour the wreckage of the Titanic just one year after another submersible imploded at the site.
Real estate investor Larry Connor said that he will be making the voyage in a two-person submersible — more than 12,000 feet deep — with Triton Submarines co-founder Patrick Lahey.
Lahey, speaking about Connor, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/lifestyle/travel/submersible-industry-after-oceangate-6b412e70?mod=hp_lead_pos8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> The Wall Street Journal: “We had a client, a wonderful man. He called me up and said, ‘You know, what we need to do is build a sub that can dive to [Titanic-level depths] repeatedly and safely and demonstrate to the world that you guys can do that, and that Titan was a contraption.'&#8221;
Connor told the Journal that he wants to “show people worldwide that while the ocean is extremely powerful, it can be wonderful and enjoyable and really kind of life-changing if you go about it the right way.”
&#8220;Patrick has been thinking about and designing this for over a decade,&#8221; Connor continued. &#8220;But we didn’t have the materials and technology. You couldn’t have built this sub five years ago.&#8221;
The two will make the journey in a $20 million submersible, the Triton 4000/2 Abyssal Explorer, which can dive to a depth of 4,000 meters. The Titanic rests at the 3,800 meters below the ocean&#8217;s surface.
Last June, a submersible from OceanGate imploded on its way to the bottom of the ocean floor to view the Titanic. All five people on board — including OceanGate&#8217;s CEO, Stockton Rush — were killed within a fraction of second due to the extreme pressures that exist at that depth.
David Lochridge, a submersible pilot and engineer who had served in Great Britain’s Royal Navy and worked all over the world, had <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/oceangate-suspends-operations-after-deadly-implosion">expressed reservations</a> about the design and build of OceanGate’s submersible, but his concerns were reportedly dismissed. He found numerous problems with the vessel, including the carbon-fiber hull having “very visible signs of delamination and porosity,” the glue for ballast bags coming off, sealing faces with errant plunge holes, and O-ring grooves whose design was not standard, among many others. When Lochridge brought up his concerns at a company meeting, he was fired.
“I would consider myself pretty ballsy when it comes to doing things that are dangerous, but that sub is an accident waiting to happen,” Lochridge wrote to Rob McCallum, who co-founded a company called Eyos Expeditions and had taken tourists to the Titanic years before. “There’s no way on earth you could have paid me to dive the thing. … I don’t want to be seen as a Tattle tale but I’m so worried he kills himself and others in the quest to boost his ego.”

OceanGate’s director of finance and administration said in the interview that she could not work for Rush, and so she quit as soon as she found another job.
“I could not work for Stockton,” she said, claiming that he had asked her to take over as chief submersible pilot. “I did not trust him. It freaked me out that he would want me to be head pilot, since my background is in accounting.” She noted that several of the engineers for the company were in their late teens and early twenties.

According to <a href="https://tass.ru/politika/20348589" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TASS,</a> the Russian state-owned news agency, Russia is objecting to what it calls the United States’ &#8220;illegal attempts to unilaterally change the external boundaries of the continental shelf&#8221; in regions of the oceans around the world.
In advance of the council of the International Seabed Authority meetings between March 18 and March 29, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement accusing the U.S. of moving its boundaries.
“During the session, the Russian delegation announced its non-recognition of the outer boundaries of the continental shelf declared unilaterally by the United States in December 2023 beyond 200 nautical miles from the baselines from which the width of the territorial sea is measured in seven regions of the World Ocean,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said. “Earlier, the American side was sent a corresponding demarche via a bilateral line.”
But it was Russia that claimed in December it wanted an extended continental shelf in the Arctic Ocean. During the 13th International Arctic Forum, Russian Navy chief Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov stated, &#8220;There is need for a full-scale expansion into the continental shelf beyond the borders of the 200-mile exclusive economic zone.”
As far back as 2001, Russia asked the U.N. to let them expand the  Arctic Seabed; the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) rejected the submission. &#8220;In 2015, Moscow re-submitted an updated claim&#8221; and did so again in March 2021. “In all, Russia’s continental shelf as proposed would encompass almost 70 percent of the Arctic Ocean, overlapping EEZ’s of other Arctic countries such as Denmark and Canada,” The Maritime Executive <a href="https://maritime-executive.com/article/russia-insists-on-an-expanded-boundary-in-the-arctic-ocean" target="_blank" rel="noopener">noted</a>.
The 1982 Law of the Sea Convention issued a legal framework for the use and protection of the sea, stating guidelines with respect to states&#8217; navigational rights, maritime zones and boundaries, and economic jurisdiction. The United States has never ratified the convention. In 2012, when 34 senators opposed ratification, Sen. Rob Portman, (R-OH), <a href="https://www.heritage.org/global-politics/commentary/7-reasons-us-should-not-ratify-un-convention-the-law-the-sea" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-external="yes">stated</a>:

The Heritage Foundation <a href="https://www.heritage.org/global-politics/commentary/7-reasons-us-should-not-ratify-un-convention-the-law-the-sea" target="_blank" rel="noopener">outlined its opposition</a> to ratification by noting “U.S. membership in the convention would not confer any maritime right or freedom that the U.S. does not already enjoy. &#8230; U.S. accession would penalize U.S. companies by subjecting them to the whims of an unelected and unaccountable bureaucracy and would force them to pay excessive fees to the International Seabed Authority for redistribution to developing countries. &#8230; it will be required to transfer a large portion of royalties generated on the U.S. extended continental shelf to the International Seabed Authority, and, through the authority, to corrupt and undemocratic nations. &#8230; it will be exposed to climate change lawsuits and other environmental actions brought against it by other members of the convention.&#8221;
Former President Barack Obama wanted the U.S. to join the convention, <a href="https://www.noaa.gov/law-of-sea-convention#:~:text=The%201982%20Law%20of%20the,both%20natural%20and%20cultural%20resources." target="_blank" rel="noopener">saying</a> in 2013, “Only by joining the convention can we maximize legal certainty and best secure international recognition of our sovereign rights with respect to the U.S. extended continental shelf in the Arctic and elsewhere.”

RMS Titanic Inc. is looking into claims made by OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush about the safety of his submersible after one of the foundation’s leaders died when the sub imploded last week. 
On June 19, Paul-Henri Nargeolet, the <a href="https://www.discovertitanic.com/about-us/team/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">director</a> of underwater research for RMS Titanic Inc., boarded the 22-foot Titan submersible with four other passengers, including Rush, on a voyage to the depths of the Atlantic Ocean to view the Titanic wreckage. All five aboard the Titan likely died hours after the underwater trip began, and Nargeolet’s foundation is seeking answers.
“We have now our own internal questions about the representations [OceanGate] made that we made the basis on giving PH the OK to go,” Jessica Sanders, the president of RMS Titanic Inc., <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/06/30/rms-titanic-inc-probing-if-cavalier-stockton-rush-misled-them-to-get-ph-nargeolet-aboard-doomed-sub/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> The New York Post. “We’re going back and looking at that now ourselves internally, because there were representations not only made to us, but made to the court, that now we have to go back and verify because of these stories that are coming up that question them.”
Rush reportedly told passengers that the Titan was “way safer than flying in a helicopter or even scuba diving,” but <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/red-flags-surrounded-the-missing-titanic-sub-years-before-disappearance" target="_blank" rel="noopener">red flags surrounded the submersible</a> years before the disaster. Those wishing to squeeze into the submersible roughly the size of a minivan had to sign waivers accepting the possibility of injury or death, and before Titan’s latest trek, OceanGate faced multiple warnings from people inside and outside the company, as well as a lawsuit from an employee flagging what he saw as massive safety issues.
Rush proudly used off-the-shelf items and “<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/06/23/titanic-submersible-ceo-carbon-fiber-rush/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">discounted</a>” parts when he built the Titan and steered the vessel with a <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/06/23/logitechs-stock-hit-titanic-subs-video-game-controller/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">game controller</a>. The OceanGate CEO also once <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/boss-of-titanic-sub-company-didnt-want-50-year-old-white-guys-on-his-team" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> he didn’t want to hire “50-year-old white guys” on his team even if they were seasoned submariners.
Sanders said Nargeolet joined the OceanGate expedition as a guest, and not for research purposes, according to the Post. Nargeolet approached the foundation, asking for approval to join OceanGate’s voyage to the Titanic, and after careful consideration, RMS Titanic Inc. said yes. The 77-year-old Frenchman was one the first people to visit the Titanic wreckage in 1987, and he went on to re-visit the Titanic wreckage roughly 35 times.

Those aboard the Titan likely died “in milliseconds,” according to experts who spoke after pieces of the vessel were discovered. Rush and Nargeolet were joined by billionaire explorer Hamish Harding and British businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman.

U.S. officials announced Wednesday afternoon that they had recovered &#8220;presumed human remains&#8221; from the wreckage at the bottom of the ocean floor where <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/titanic" target="_blank" rel="noopener">OceanGate&#8217;s Titan submersible</a> imploded under extreme pressure.

Marine Board of Investigation (MBI) Chair Captain Jason Neubauer said that the evidence that was recovered will be useful to investigators as they seek to piece together what happened.
“I am grateful for the coordinated international and interagency support to recover and preserve this vital evidence at extreme offshore distances and depths,” said Neubauer. “The evidence will provide investigators from several international jurisdictions with critical insights into the cause of this tragedy. There is still a substantial amount of work to be done to understand the factors that led to the catastrophic loss of the TITAN and help ensure a similar tragedy does not occur again.”

Photos and a video showed crews moving at least three large pieces of the OceanGate submersible off the Horizon Arctic ship in St. Johns, Newfoundland. The largest piece pulled from the depths of the Atlantic Ocean appeared to be full of mechanical parts and wires, while two other pieces looked similar to the sub’s external cover and landing frame.
Search crews found parts of the Titan’s wreckage at the bottom of the ocean last Thursday, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/oceangate-on-search-for-titan-sub-5-people-on-board-have-sadly-been-lost" data-reader-unique-id="32">confirming</a> that all five passengers aboard the vessel “had sadly been lost.” The debris field was discovered by a remote-operated vehicle (ROV) deployed by the Horizon Arctic.

Parts of the doomed Titan submersible that imploded during its voyage to the Titanic wreckage were pulled to shore in Canada Wednesday.
Photos and a video showed crews moving at least three large pieces of the OceanGate submersible off the Horizon Arctic ship in St. Johns, Newfoundland. Search crews found parts of the Titan’s wreckage at the bottom of the ocean last Thursday, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/oceangate-on-search-for-titan-sub-5-people-on-board-have-sadly-been-lost">confirming</a> that all five passengers aboard the vessel “had sadly been lost.” The debris field was discovered by a remote-operated vehicle (ROV) deployed by the Horizon Arctic.

Officials believe it’s likely the submersible imploded hours after its voyage began, and a top-secret U.S. Navy system <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/top-secret-u-s-navy-system-detected-titan-sub-implosion-days-ago">detected an implosion</a> a short time after learning that the sub lost communication with its mothership, according to The Wall Street Journal.
“The U.S. Navy conducted an analysis of acoustic data and detected an anomaly consistent with an implosion or explosion in the general vicinity of where the Titan submersible was operating when communications were lost,” a senior U.S. Navy official told The Wall Street Journal in a statement. “While not definitive, this information was immediately shared with the Incident Commander to assist with the ongoing search and rescue mission.”

The aunt of Suleman Dawood, the youngest passenger aboard the Titanic-bound submarine that officials believe <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/passengers-aboard-dismantled-titanic-sub-likely-died-in-milliseconds" target="_blank" rel="noopener">imploded</a> on Sunday, said that he decided to join the voyage because he hoped to bond with his father over the trip. 
Azmeh Dawood, the aunt of 19-year-old Suleman, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/titanic-submersible-shahwood-suleman-family-tragedy-rcna90678" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> NBC News that her nephew had been “terrified” about the trip but decided to join her brother, Shahzada Dawood, on the expedition to spend time with him over the Father’s Day weekend. 
&#8220;I am thinking of Suleman, who is 19, in there, just perhaps gasping for breath &#8230; It&#8217;s been crippling, to be honest,&#8221; Azmeh told NBC, adding that she was still in “disbelief” about the whole situation. 
&#8220;I feel like I&#8217;ve been caught in a really bad film, with a countdown, but you didn&#8217;t know what you&#8217;re counting down to,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I personally have found it kind of difficult to breathe thinking of them.&#8221;

Other victims onboard the sub included billionaire Hamish Harding, French maritime expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and OceanGate CEO and founder Stockton Rush. 
According to Azmeh, her younger brother had long been fascinated by the story of the Titanic and repeatedly watched the 1958 Titanic drama “A Night to Remember,&#8221; growing up. The Titanic sank in 1912 and lies some 12,500 feet below the surface, and about 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland in the Atlantic Ocean.

“The immense love and support we receive continues to help us endure this unimaginable loss,&#8221; they said. 
After several days of searching, the Coast Guard confirmed on Thursday that they found debris from the sub which had gone missing on Sunday.

After the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that the five passengers aboard the Titan died after the vessel imploded earlier this week, questions remain about the timeline of the implosion and the “banging” noises rescue teams heard days after the search operation began.
The Wall Street Journal <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-navy-detected-titan-sub-implosion-days-ago-6844cb12?mod=wknd_pos1">reported</a> Thursday that the U.S. Navy <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/top-secret-u-s-navy-system-detected-titan-sub-implosion-days-ago">immediately began listening</a> for the Titan once it learned that it had gone dark and detected an implosion a short time later, which means the submersible likely imploded on Sunday. But on Tuesday and Wednesday, a Canadian airplane detected “banging” noises in 30-minute intervals in the area near the Titanic wreckage, causing people to speculate that those aboard the Titan were alive and signaling for help. 
So what were the underwater noises picked up by search teams days after officials said they heard the Titan’s implosion? Experts have some theories.
<h2>Search Equipment</h2>
The area surrounding the Titanic wreck was being searched by multiple ships, sonobuoys, and remote operated vehicles (ROVs) when the underwater noises were picked up. Experts began analyzing the recordings immediately after sounds were detected by sonobuoys that had been deployed by search aircraft. From the beginning, authorities said they were unsure of what was causing the banging, but according to some experts, it wouldn’t take them long to determine if the sounds came from humans, machines, or animals. 
“I think it would be pretty straightforward to determine whether something is an Earth signal or a biological signal or a machine signal,” said Dr. Simone Baumann-Pickering, an acoustic ecologist at the University of California San Diego, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/21/us/underwater-noise-search-submersible.html">according</a> to The New York Times. 
Matthew Schanck, the founder of maritime search and rescue organization Marsar International, <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-12226303/What-banging-sound-heard-Titan-rescue-bid.html">told</a> The Daily Mail that the noises could have come from multiple sources, but he said there is a high probability they were caused by search vessels. 
“Our understanding is the noise could have a number of sources,” he said. “The subsurface of the ocean is a noisy environment. But given the high density of vessels in the area operating their propulsion systems and heavy machinery/equipment in the area, this may have been picked up by sonobuoys.”

As the search continued earlier this week, Jeff Karson, professor of earth and environmental sciences at Syracuse University, warned that focusing on the banging sounds as evidence that the five passengers could still be alive was “wishful thinking.” Karson said that the sound likely just came from junk in the ocean and possibly Titanic wreckage, which is <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/titanic-decaying-expedition/">constantly decaying </a>and falling to the ocean floor.

The professor also explained that sounds coming from the ocean, especially from an area near a shipwreck, could be complicated by echoes. 
“One possibility is that the sounds [are] bouncing around the debris. And so it&#8217;s a more complicated echo. It&#8217;s just not bouncing off of one thing. It&#8217;s bouncing off a bunch of things. And it&#8217;s like, you know, dropping up a marble into a tin can. It&#8217;s rattling around and that would confuse the location,” Karson <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12220611/Sonar-expert-says-banging-heard-sub-search-site-debris-falling-decaying-wreck.html">said</a>.
“Is it really banging or just some unidentified sound? I think that is a more accurate description right now,” he added. “There&#8217;s no telling where the sound is coming from or how far away it is.”
Dr. Jamie Pringle, reader in Forensic Geosciences at Keele University, was skeptical that the noises picked up by the sonobuoys came from the Titanic, however. 
“Noise from the Titanic wreck at that water depth would also be unlikely to travel to the surface,” he said. 
<h2>Marine Life</h2>
Another possibility is that the underwater noises picked up came from the variety of sea creatures living in the Atlantic, such as whales. 
Dolphins usually make high-frequency sounds like whistles that are used for echolocation, but whales can make noises that are lower frequency. While the recordings picked up what sounds like something clanking against metal in 30-minute intervals, pointing to a man-made source, Carl Hartsfield, a laboratory director at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/21/us/underwater-noise-search-submersible.html">said</a> it’s a little more complicated than that. 
“From my experience with acoustics, there are sounds by biologics that sound man-made to the untrained ear,” he said. “But I can assure you that the people listening to these tapes are trained.”
The U.S. Coast Guard is still investigating the circumstances surrounding the Titan implosion as questions are likely to swirl for weeks. 
&#8220;This was an incredibly complex case and we&#8217;re still working to develop details for the timeline involved with this casualty and the response,” Coast Guard Rear Adm. John Mauger <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/probe-seeks-answers-titanic-sub-catastrophic-implosion/story?id=100316037">said</a>. 
Two ROVs, one from France and one from Canada, will continue mapping debris fields at the site of the disaster. The admiral said the Coast Guard, along with the French and Canadian governments, will continue to seek answers on &#8220;how, why, and when this happened.&#8221;

The remarks come after U.S. officials announced earlier in the day that the vessel had imploded, killing all five people on board.
The Wall Street Journal later <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-navy-detected-titan-sub-implosion-days-ago-6844cb12?mod=hp_trending_now_article_pos3">reported</a> that the U.S. Navy had detected the moment that the vessel imploded earlier this week using &#8220;a top secret military acoustic detection system designed to spot enemy submarines.&#8221;
Crenshaw told reporters on the Capitol steps that this was a case of &#8220;epic failure in leadership,&#8221; although he was not sure whether the lapse was the fault of the White House, the Navy, or the U.S. Coast Guard.
Crenshaw, a former Navy SEAL, said that the critical failure in leadership was the fact that the U.S. assets – a 6K ROV and a Magellan submarine – were not deployed sooner to join rescue efforts.
“Now, it’s important to note that if you had just deployed those assets, they would have arrived on scene by Wednesday morning at the latest,” Crenshaw said. “That tapping continues to be heard and chatted about in all these channels throughout Wednesday. Then it stops late Wednesday. They finally deploy this 6K ROV, the only thing capable of actually going to that depth and seeing what’s down there, this morning. It deploys down there and the wreckage was exactly where they thought it would be. So where’s the failure here? The failure here is to not put all your options on the table.&#8221;
Crenshaw said that industry experts told him that the implosion sound the Navy heard could have &#8220;easily been the sub just hitting the floor.&#8221;
&#8220;And then you add that with this tapping, which was apparently like your standard procedure SOS, every half hour, you are hearing that throughout the day Tuesday and Wednesday, it begs the question — could this have been resolved differently if leadership had just acted sooner and actually put options on the table instead of just assuming? Well, it doesn’t matter because they’re dead,&#8221; he added.

Cameron, who is considered an expert at diving and submersibles, made the remarks during interviews with ABC News and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/22/science/james-cameron-titanic-submersible.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The New York Times</a> after officials announced that they had located the debris of the vessel on the ocean floor and the five passengers on board had all died.
&#8220;I&#8217;ve been down there many times. I know the [Titanic] wreck site very well,&#8221; Cameron said. &#8220;I&#8217;ve made 33 dives, and I actually calculated that I spent more time on the ship than the captain did back in the day.&#8221;
&#8220;As a submersible designer myself, I designed and built a sub to go to the deepest place in the ocean – three times deeper than Titanic,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So, I understand the engineering problems associated with building this type of vehicle and all the safety protocols that you have to go through.&#8221;
Cameron said that there have never been any fatalities in this type of underwater exploration in the past and that the Titan imploded because it was made out of carbon fiber, which is stronger and lighter than steel or aluminum but has &#8220;no strength in compression.&#8221;
Cameron said that the implosion, when an object collapses inward, would have been “an extremely violent event — like 10 cases of dynamite going off.”
Cameron said that deep submergence is a &#8220;mature art&#8221; and that all submersibles &#8220;except this one&#8221; undergo certification protocols to make sure the vessels are safe for passengers.

And a number of the top players in the deep submergence engineering community even wrote letters to the company, saying that what they were doing was too experimental to carry passengers, and that it needed to be certified,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So, I&#8217;m struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship, and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field on a moonless night and many people died as a result.&#8221;
