The U.S. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-navy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Navy</a> announced this week that it would be renaming a ship named for oceanographic pioneer Matthew Fontaine Maury because of Maury’s ties to the Confederacy during the later years of his life. 
Maury, <a href="https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/cable-matthew-fontaine-maury-1806-1873/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">known</a> as the “Pathfinder of the Seas,” was a Navy officer and accomplished oceanographer who helped come up with the idea for a transatlantic cable. The USNS Maury will be renamed after Marie Tharp, an oceanographer cartographer and geologist who lived in the 20th century. 
“As the history of our great nation evolves, we must put forth the effort to recognize figures who positively influenced our society,” Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro <a href="https://www.navytimes.com/news/your-navy/2023/03/08/confederates-name-removed-from-navy-survey-ship/#:~:text=The%20Navy%20announced%20Wednesday%20that%20it%20was%20renaming%20an%20oceanographic,will%20be%20renamed%20Marie%20Tharp." target="_blank" rel="noopener">stated</a>. “This renaming honors just one of the many historic women who have made a significant impact on not only our Navy, but our nation.”
The oceanographic survey ship was renamed as part of a congressionally mandated commission that recommended purging any names or entities associated with the Confederacy from military property, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2022/12/29/arlington-cemetery-confederate-memorial/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">including</a> the historic Confederate Memorial which sits surrounded by the graves of Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. 
Maury was born in Virginia in 1806 before his family moved to Tennessee and he joined the U.S. Navy in 1825. During his time in the Navy, he was aboard the first Navy ship to circumnavigate the globe and released a book on navigation at the age of 30. 
After an injury rendered him unable to sail, Maury became heavily involved in charting the ocean for the Navy. He was placed in charge of the Navy’s Depot of Charts and Instruments before rising to lead the U.S. Naval Observatory from 1844-1861. 
He was an effective navigator and sailors were able to cut almost 50 days off of travel time for ships going from New York to San Francisco. His influential books on the ocean <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Matthew-Fontaine-Maury" target="_blank" rel="noopener">included</a> “The Physical Geography of the Sea,” and “Sailing Directions,” both originally published in 1855. 
When the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/american-civil-war" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Civil War</a> broke out, he chose to side with the Confederacy as he was from Virginia. During the war, he tried to create an electric torpedo and went to England as a Confederate agent. After the war, he worked for a short time with Mexico’s emperor to see if they could establish a Confederate colony before he became a meteorology professor at Virginia Military Institute. 
A monument of Maury, who died in 1873, was also removed from Monument Avenue in Richmond, Virginia, in 2020. 
Another Navy ship, a missile-guided cruiser named after the Civil War battle of Chancellorsville, was recently renamed. The Navy chose to the ship to be named in honor of Robert Smalls, a former slave who commandeered a Confederate ship during the war.

A treasure hunter has accused the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/fbi" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FBI</a> of a coverup as a dispute over the search for a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/american-civil-war" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Civil War</a>-era gold stash continues to play out in court. 
Dennis and Kem Parada, a father-son treasure-hunting duo called “Finders Keepers,” believe that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fbi-forced-to-reveal-study-showing-possible-civil-war-gold-cache-in-case-against-treasure-hunters" target="_blank" rel="noopener">newly released documents</a> and video pertaining to the FBI’s search of Dents Run, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/pennsylvania" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pennsylvania</a>, show that the federal agency has not been completely straightforward about their search for gold. 
“We feel we were double-crossed and lied to,” Dennis Parada <a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-war-and-unrest-pennsylvania-clearfield-ec6f923036d4da94d0d8b07a6e0e82bb" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the Associated Press in an interview, though he says he believes that “the truth will come out.” 
The dispute hinges on the Paradas’ belief that gold, part of an 1863 shipment of Union gold intended for the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, ended up buried about 135 miles northeast of Pittsburgh after a potential train robbery. The gold, if found, has a current <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/treasure-hunters-searching-55-million-025705312.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">estimated value</a> of $55 million.
After years of research, the Paradas led the FBI to the suspected location of the gold at Dents Run which the agency searched in 2018. The FBI said the dig came up empty though the Parada has remained skeptical. 
“I will stick at this until the end, until I know everything that happened to that gold,” he said. “How much, where it went to, who has it now. I gotta know.”
New videos and images from the search obtained by Parada through a Freedom of Information Act request shed new light on the 2018 search and have raised more questions for Parada. 
“We’ve identified through our investigation a site that we believe has U.S. property, which includes a significant sum of base metal which is valuable &#8230; particularly gold, maybe silver,” a Philadelphia-based FBI agent said in the video. 
Parada says he thinks the agency may have dug overnight when the search was supposed to be on hold and moved the gold, though the FBI has said it never dug at night. In 2018, locals <a href="https://apnews.com/article/north-america-pa-state-wire-wv-state-wire-us-news-ap-top-news-b8b4d27254814894b3a79aa3083fb356" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the AP that they had heard digging equipment at work throughout the night and that the hill where the gold was suspected to be was lit up. 
Another question raised by Parada and consultant Warren Getler is about why a photo of a large boulder said to be taken after a snowstorm began had no snow on it. “We have compelling evidence a night dig took place, and that the FBI went to some large effort to cover up that night dig,” Getler, a Civil War gold researcher, said.
A recent legal filing from Parada also alleges a number of other problems with the FBI’s response to his inquiry for more details on its search of Dents Run. The filing says that Finder’s Keepers was not given any video of the dig’s second day, did not provide details on a 30-foot-long trench that is mapped at the site, and claimed that a report given to them on the dig seemed to be missing pages. 
According to Anne Weismann, a lawyer for Finders Keepers, the records given to the group “cast doubt on the FBI’s claim to have found nothing and raise serious and troubling questions about the FBI’s conduct during the dig and in this litigation, where it has gone to great lengths to distort critical evidence.”
A judge will determine if the agency will be required to respond to the treasure hunter’s latest request.

Heated political rhetoric — and growing concerns about political violence — have fueled warning after warning that the United States might be headed for another Civil War.
An <a href="https://today.yougov.com/topics/politics/articles-reports/2022/08/24/politics-elections-economist-yougov-poll-august-20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">August 2022 poll</a> from The Economist/YouGov revealed that everyday Americans worry that the country is too divided to course-correct. <a href="https://www.deseret.com/u-s-world/2022/9/1/23328699/is-a-second-civil-war-likely-in-america" target="_blank" rel="noopener">According to that poll</a>, 42% (half of Republicans and 39% of Democrats) believe a second civil war is at least &#8220;somewhat likely&#8221; within the next decade. A decisive majority — 68% — believes that political violence will increase, and 86% believe that political divides have only deepened since early 2021.
The Brookings Institute published a <a href="https://www.brookings.edu/blog/fixgov/2021/09/16/is-the-us-headed-for-another-civil-war/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">piece</a> in September of 2021 that outlined some of the reasons another civil war might be inevitable. Not the least of these was the sincere belief — held by most Americans, regardless of their political persuasion — that the &#8220;other side&#8221; was not going to play fair. Competing accusations of &#8220;<a href="https://dailywire.com/news/democrats-georgias-record-voter-turnout-is-actually-voter-suppression/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voter suppression</a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href="https://dailywire.com/news/ben-shapiro-twitter-files-show-2020-was-rigged-not-stolen-but-trump-is-hurting-himself/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stolen elections</a>&#8221; only serve to bolster those beliefs.
And there are some who believe a new civil war is already underway — albeit a &#8220;cold&#8221; civil war absent the body count of its &#8220;hot&#8221; counterpart. Claremont Review of Books editor Charles R. Kesler <a href="https://imprimis.hillsdale.edu/americas-cold-civil-war/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">outlined</a> just such a &#8220;cold&#8221; civil war, describing it as a battle between two constitutions.
&#8220;Underlying our cold civil war is the fact that America is torn increasingly between two rival constitutions, two cultures, two ways of life,&#8221; he said during a 2018 lecture at Hillsdale College.
One faction, he explained, accepted the U.S. Constitution as written and amended. The other argued that the Constitution must constantly be reimagined in order to ensure that it meets the needs of a changing culture. The &#8220;living Constitution&#8221; they advocate &#8220;implies that the original Constitution is dead — or at least on life support — and that in order to remain relevant to our national life, the original Constitution must be infused with new meaning and new ends and therefore with new duties, rights, and powers. To cite an important example, new administrative agencies must be created to circumvent the structural limitations that the original Constitution imposed on government.&#8221;
But the fundamental problem with a second civil war in the United States — particularly one that splits Americans along ideological lines — is that there is no east-to-west or north-to-south Mason-Dixon Line along which to <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/01/11/1071082955/imagine-another-american-civil-war-but-this-time-in-every-state" target="_blank" rel="noopener">divide the country</a>. Rather, there are tiny, fragmented lines that will divide states, counties, and even individual households.
&#8220;We&#8217;re less a nation divided into 50 states than we are two nations that are both present in each of those states. Each is dominant in its own space and certain that it is the real America,&#8221; NPR&#8217;s Ron Elving wrote in January of 2022.
&#8220;The forces of disunity are disquieting, to say the least. But must it all come to blows? Can we still center ourselves and pull back from whatever brink we are approaching?&#8221; he asked — and ultimately left the question unanswered.
Time Magazine&#8217;s Peter Coleman <a href="https://time.com/6222633/second-civil-war-us-how-to-avoid/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">offered hope</a> in a piece published in October, saying that the only way to truly lower the temperature and find common ground was for Americans — whether they be politicians and pundits or simply neighbors — to stop talking past each other and start listening to each other. He explained that when he tried this himself with a neighbor who had differing political views, he was surprised to learn first that they actually agreed on more things than he had expected, and second, that his own faulty assumptions about what &#8220;the other side&#8221; believed had been a part of the problem.
Another ray of hope as Christmas approaches comes from the <a href="https://poets.org/poem/christmas-bells" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1864 poem</a> written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, penned as the nation around him was quite literally being torn to pieces: state versus state; brother versus brother.
The first stanzas of &#8220;Christmas Bells&#8221; reflect on the Biblical promise of the Christmas angels, who had come to earth to herald the birth of Jesus and deliver a message of &#8220;peace on earth, good will to men.&#8221; He explains that, after many hundreds of years of the church bells repeating that message, it should have resonated with all of humanity.

Their old, familiar carols play, 
    And wild and sweet 
    The words repeat 
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
And thought how, as the day had come, 
The belfries of all Christendom

Longfellow turned back then to his present day and the war that threatened to consume a nation — and lamented the feeling that the Christmas message was being choked out by the hatred that drove the war to continue. His own <a href="https://www.nps.gov/long/learn/historyculture/christmas-bells.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">personal connection</a> to the war intensified when his son Charley ran away to join the Union Army in 1863 — he was later wounded during the Mine Run campaign.
<blockquote>Then from each black, accursed mouth 
The cannon thundered in the South, 
    And with the sound 
    The carols drowned 
Of peace on earth, good-will to men! 
It was as if an earthquake rent 
The hearth-stones of a continent, 
    And made forlorn

But Longfellow held out hope, even in a nation that was already torn asunder — and concluded with the fact that the message of Christmas was still there: the church bells were still faithfully ringing their message, and the people had only to listen to it.

The city of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/virginia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Richmond</a>, Virginia, has dug up the remains of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/american-civil-war" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Confederate General A.P. Hill</a> as it continues to purge Confederate symbols and monuments from public spaces. 
The remains of Hill, which had been buried under a monument to the general, were located on Tuesday after two days of digging. The casket of Hill, who was reportedly buried standing up, was <a href="https://twitter.com/SchneiderG/status/1602707919958675456">rotted</a> away when workers finally found the remains using an excavator. 
According to local reporter Riley Wyant, the remains of Hill were blocked from public view using a tarp before they were transferred into a body bag and wheeled away on a stretcher. The remains were transferred to the general&#8217;s relatives, including John Hill, the general’s <a href="https://apnews.com/article/entertainment-richmond-6c847bb2e6e52a7048d44d2aacc2ef85" target="_blank" rel="noopener">closest</a> indirect descendent.

The city had brought in an excavator to search for Hill’s remains, which <a href="https://news.artnet.com/art-world/richmonds-last-confederate-monument-removed-2227847" target="_blank" rel="noopener">had</a> been buried at an intersection of the city for over 130 years. On top of the grave was a statue of the Confederate soldier. The statue, which was removed via crane on Monday, was the last city-owned Confederate monument to be removed from Richmond.
The removal of the statue and remains comes after a legal battle between the city and descendants of Hill, which was complicated by the monument’s usage as a headstone. The move was hailed by Democratic Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney, but decried by Hill&#8217;s relatives. 
“Over two years ago, Richmond was home to more Confederate statues than any city in the United States. Collectively, we have closed that chapter,” Stoney <a href="https://twitter.com/LevarStoney/status/1602351556879421441" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tweeted</a>. “We now continue the work of being a more inclusive and welcoming place where ALL belong.”

John Hill said he was disappointed to see the statue removed. “It’s been devastating because that is my family name up there, that’s our headstone so we don’t want the city to have possession of it and destroy it,” he <a href="https://www.nbc29.com/2022/12/12/watch-ap-hill-statue-removed-richmond/">said</a>, according to NBC 29. “We wanted his remains to be moved with the headstone so they didn’t have to be disturbed.”

The relative also said the Virginian opposed slavery. “All of his census documents show he never owned a slave and he did not believe in slavery,” he said. Hill’s remains are expected to be moved to a Culpeper cemetery, nearby to where the Confederate general grew up. The monument itself has been moved to storage while Hill’s descendants and the city fight for control. The city wants to give it to the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia while Hill’s family hopes to place it at a battlefield where he fought. 
Born in Culpeper, Virginia, in 1825, Ambrose Powell Hill <a href="https://www.pbs.org/kenburns/the-civil-war/ambrose-p-hill" target="_blank" rel="noopener">attended</a> West Point in the 1840s, where he was roommates with future Union Major General George McClellan, who would be a commander of the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. The future enemies would become friends during school, and Hill was even in McClellan’s wedding.

During the war, Hill rose to prominence because of his key contributions at the battles of Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Petersburg. Hill is <a href="https://archive.ph/C34ga" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credited</a> with saving Robert E. Lee&#8217;s army at Antietam when he launched a counterattack in the battle, which saw 22,000 casualties. 
Hill was killed at Petersburg on April 2, 1865, just days before the end of the war, leaving behind his wife and three daughters. 
The removal of the Hill statue and grave follows other prominent monument removals in Richmond, including statues of Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson.

Treasure from a pre-<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/american-civil-war">Civil War</a> shipwreck is going up for sale, but only after they are displayed around the country after decades of being kept out of the public eye.
Items <a href="https://www.rgj.com/story/news/2022/07/27/treasures-1857-ship-gold-shipwreck-unveiled-reno/10158916002/">available</a> for purchase include jewelry made from gold found during the California gold rush, 165-year-old gold miner pants, photographs, bottles, pistols, and other objects. These items, alongside another 1,000 objects going up for sale, come from the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/two-sunken-ships-found-near-holy-grail-of-shipwrecks-artifacts-from-estimated-17-billion-treasure-revealed">wreck</a> of the S.S. Central America, known as the “Ship of Gold,” which went down during a hurricane off the coast of North Carolina in 1857.
When the ship went down, 425 of its 578 passengers were killed and its wreck became one of the most well-known in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/american-history">American history</a>. Historians cite the massive loss of gold from the wreck of the S.S. Central America as a contributor to the Panic of 1857, an economic crisis in the U.S. that lasted for about three years.
“These incredible artifacts that were in secure storage in three different states are now giving us a glimpse of Gold Rush-era daily life for passengers and crew in the 1850s,&#8221; <a href="https://etradewire.com/news/california-gold-rush-sunken-treasure-from-ship-of-gold-that-sank-in-1857-will-be-displayed-in-reno">said</a> Dwight Manley, of the California Gold Marketing Group of Brea, the organization that owns the objects.
Another artifact found is the key to a wine cellar on board the ship and other keys believed to be for the rooms where the ship’s massive gold stash was kept. A photograph, known as the “Mona Lisa of the Deep” was found by divers with coal from the ship and features an unknown young woman.
Also among the ship’s notable artifacts is an 18-karat gold brooch intended to be a gift to a teacher from 19th century San Francisco businessman Samuel Brannan, as well as a pair of canvas pants used by a gold miner and possibly manufactured in part by Levi Straus.
Holabird Western Americana Collections will put the items up for sale in public auctions in October and November.
Artifacts were found on the ship over a period of almost 35 years as divers continued to pull more historic artifacts up from the deep. They had been kept at various storage buildings in Ohio, Maryland, and Massachusetts.
Tommy Thompson, the explorer who discovered the ship in the 1980s, is in jail in Michigan because of 500 gold coins that he will not disclose the location of to the government. <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2022/07/29/ss-central-america-shipwreck-artifacts-treasure/10153502002/">According</a> to USA Today, Thompson owes about $2 million in penalties because of continuous fines from his contempt of court charge.
It is unclear when or if Thompson will get out of jail.

In a segment commemorating Juneteenth, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/ibram-x-kendi">Ibram X. Kendi</a> <a href="https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/mark-finkelstein/2022/06/19/cbss-kendi-gun-rights-advocates-are-people-who-fought-slavery?utm_source=SocialDog">told</a> &#8220;Face the Nation&#8221; host Margaret Brennan he teaches his young daughter that the struggle for emancipation continues today. Kendi, the network’s &#8220;Racial Justice Contributor,&#8221; said “freedom” today means liberation from poverty and guns.
&#8220;I&#8217;m actually going to teach her that &#8230; throughout this nation&#8217;s history, there&#8217;s [sic] been two perspectives on freedom, really two fights for freedom,” Kendi said. “Enslaved people were fighting for freedom from slavery, and enslavers were fighting for the freedom to enslave.&#8221;
“And in many ways that sort of contrast still exists today,” he continued. “There are people who are fighting for freedom from assault rifles, freedom from poverty, freedom from exploitation. And there are others who are fighting for freedom to exploit, freedom to have guns, freedom to maintain inequality.&#8221;

Kendi, the author of controversial books including “How to Be an Antiracist,” believes America is plagued by systemic racism and white privilege. He argues that whites must acknowledge their privilege and implicit bias, as well as America’s systemic racism, to oppose racism.
Kendi said he is raising his daughter to believe the effort to purge America of racism is like the fight to end slavery.
“I really want to get her to understand there are multiple kinds of freedom, and she should be fighting for and joining with those who are fighting for freedom from something like slavery,” he said. “And the way kids can understand it is, kids understand bad rules. My daughter understands what&#8217;s not fair. And we can teach children that there&#8217;s [sic] bad rules in society. There are things that are not fair in society. And that&#8217;s why, let&#8217;s say black people, have less. It&#8217;s not because they are less.”

A <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/support-for-banning-semi-automatic-long-guns-hits-all-time-low-left-of-center-poll">recent poll</a> by Quinnipiac University found that support for banning semi-automatic long guns was at an all-time low and that Americans do not support limiting the number of guns someone can own. It also concluded that Americans do not expect Congress to do anything on gun control.
“In today’s poll, 50 percent of registered voters support a nationwide ban on the sale of assault weapons, while 45 percent oppose it,” the poll <a href="https://poll.qu.edu/poll-release?releaseid=3848">said</a>.

An underwater expedition this month found that a Civil War ironclad warship sunk off the coast of North Carolina was still preserved in a time capsule-like state. 
A crew from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) went to Cape Hatteras and sailed out 16 miles to find that the wreck of the USS Monitor, a ship used by the Union during the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/american-civil-war">Civil War</a>, was still in “an excellent state of preservation” on the<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/atlantic-ocean"> Atlantic</a> seafloor.
“The wreck is in an astounding condition after being on the seafloor for 160 years and weathering all of the environmental conditions off Cape Hatteras, including exceedingly strong currents and hurricanes,” <a href="https://www.newsobserver.com/news/state/north-carolina/article261885685.html">said</a> Tane Renata Casserley, of the NOAA, to McClatchy News. 
The Monitor took part in the first-ever clash of ironclads (a warship covered in iron) in the Battle of Hampton Roads on March 9, 1862, against the Confederate vessel, the CSS Virginia (which <a href="https://www.nysl.nysed.gov/mssc/merrimac/index.html">had</a> been the USS Merrimack before being repurposed by the Confederacy). One of the key features of the Monitor was the rotating gun turret which can now be <a href="https://chesapeakebaymagazine.com/deep-dive-shipwreck-of-ironclad-uss-monitor-gets-high-tech-exploration/">viewed</a> at the Mariners Museum in Newport News, Virginia.
Later that year, the Monitor would sink off the coast of North Carolina, taking the lives of 16 crew members. It went down in an area known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic because of the frequent wrecks in those waters. 
“Leaks developed, flooding the engines and reducing steam pressure needed for propulsion. The crew tried using pumps and even bailing with buckets, but the distress was too great,” an NOAA <a href="https://monitor.noaa.gov/shipwrecks/uss_monitor.html">report</a> on the sinking explains. “The turret was the only escape hatch from below and as the men attempted dashing across the deck many of them were swept into the unknown by the treacherous waves.”
From May 15, 2022, the NOAA and the Global Foundation for Ocean Exploration used a remote camera to view the Monitor’s wreck as part of the Valor in the Atlantic initiative. This initiative intends to document and publicize photos and videos of historic shipwrecks in the Atlantic Ocean, specifically those related to World War II and the Civil War. 
The ship&#8217;s wreck, examined extensively this month for the first time since 2002, is protected under the National Maritime Sanctuary Act, the first such location to be put under such protection. In 2001, NOAA, working with the U.S. Navy, pulled the Monitor&#8217;s steam engine out of the Atlantic.  
“That same iron hull and armorbelt built to withstand the rigors of war, has now enabled Monitor to provide a stable habitat in its new role as an island of life,” Casserley said. “It truly was incredible to see the transformation at the bottom of the ocean. There was often so much marine life on Monitor it was difficult to see the shipwreck itself.”
He also described the ironclad as &#8220;a time capsule back to 1862,” adding that parts of it were in better condition than wrecks from similar times and World War II.
“The bottom line is USS Monitor will be here for generations to come to share its stories of heroism,” Casserley explained.
On Memorial Day, the National Marine Sanctuary System put out a series of tweets on the Monitor showing an image of the ironclad resting on the ocean floor.

The organization also noted that two of the sailors who drowned when the ship sank were buried in Arlington National Cemetery after their remains were found in the ironclad&#8217;s turret back in 2013.

The statue of a Civil War hero was re-dedicated in Wisconsin on Sunday after a mob tore down the original during the summer of 2020.
Descendants of Colonel Hans Christian Heg, a Union soldier who died from wounds suffered at the Battle of Chickamauga in Georgia, attended the ceremony. 
“The State has sent no braver soldier, and no truer patriot to aid in this mighty struggle for national unity, than Hans Christian Heg,” The Wisconsin State Journal <a href="https://madison.com/news/local/dozens-of-descendants-attend-the-rededication-ceremony-of-hans-christian-heg-statue/article_5ecb31a4-03b2-55ca-9b38-de0cc051882b.html">wrote</a> of Heg in 1863. &#8220;The valorous blood of the old Vikings ran in his veins.”
Heg’s statue in front of the State Capitol building in Madison was toppled during demonstrations in Wisconsin following the <a href="https://www.nbc15.com/2020/07/09/madison-man-indicted-for-extorting-two-state-st-business/">arrest</a> of a local activist who had entered a restaurant with a bull horn and baseball bat. Protests over the arrest that night turned violent as a Democratic State Senator Tim Carpenter was beaten and another historic monument called &#8220;Forward&#8221; was torn down. 
The <a href="https://www.channel3000.com/protesters-explain-why-they-tore-down-statues-at-state-capitol/">phrase</a> &#8220;Black is Beautiful&#8221; was spray-painted on the base of Heg&#8217;s statue, a Union soldier who supported abolition. The statue&#8217;s head was lost while the body was thrown into a nearby lake but later recovered. 
A restored statue of the Norwegian immigrant turned Civil War colonel was commissioned and placed back in front of the capitol building, according to The Wisconsin State Journal. 
“I want you to think about the story of Heg and look at that statue through a different and wider lens,” Christopher Kolakowski, director of the Wisconsin Veterans Museum said at the ceremony. “Hans Heg is an exemplar for Norwegians in the Norwegian community for sure, but he represents much more than that.”
One of Heg’s descendants, Lori Coffey, <a href="https://www.nbc15.com/2022/05/30/colonel-heg-descendants-re-dedicate-civil-war-hero-statue-people-wisconsin/">told</a> NBC15 that she was surprised to hear the news of the original statue being pulled down. 
“I went, ‘Oh my gosh!’ And my heart sank. I thought, ‘Why?’&#8217;’ she said. “And then I thought, ‘What would Colonel Heg do?’ I know I want to be angry but that’s not what he would’ve done.”
Several groups, including the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, took part in the ceremony. 
During his Civil War service, Heg, who supported the abolition of slavery, took part in battles at Murfreesboro, Perryville, and Island No. 10 before dying of wounds sustained at Chickamauga. Visitors to Chickamauga can see a monument at the location where he was shot.   
“You may be a widow,” he wrote to his wife during the war, “but you will never be the widow of a coward.”
An <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/toppling-history">identical statue</a> of Heg is in Norway, Wisconsin, where he lived prior to enlisting in the army and is buried at a Lutheran Evangelical Church. Another can be found in his birthplace of Lier, Norway. 
Wisconsin man Rodney A. Clendening has a trial in October over his alleged role in the destruction of the statue.

A pair of revolvers belonging to Civil War general Ulysses S. Grant brought in over $5 million at an auction of historic guns in Illinois. 
The two Remington New Model Revolvers belonging to the Union commander were purchased for $5.17 million at an auction &#8211; a record sale for the Rock Island Auction Company (RIAC). 
“Grant&#8217;s Remington revolvers, numbered 1 and 2, are arguably the most significant firearms discovered from the Civil War. The set is covered with the artistry of L. D. Nimschke, one of the most renowned master engravers of the 19th century, and features grips carved with Grant&#8217;s portrait,” RIAC <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/ulysses-s-grants-remington-revolvers-sold-for-more-than-5-17-million-during-rock-island-auction-companys-may-premier-auction-301550128.html">announced</a> in a press release last week.

Widely credited with leading the Union to victory during the American Civil War, Grant also fought in the Mexican-American War, served two terms as president, and wrote a bestselling memoir with the help of iconic American author Mark Twain. 
The revolvers were gifted to the Union general after he took the key Southern city of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Grant’s victory at Vicksburg, one of the Union’s most important victories in the Western theater of the war, took about one and a half months. The South’s defenders at Vicksburg held out from May 18, 1863, until July 4, 1863, and successfully repelled several attempts by the North to take the city even as the inhabitants <a href="https://civilwarmonths.com/2018/07/03/confederates-starving-in-vicksburg/">faced</a> starvation. 
The Union victory at Vicksburg gave them effectively total control of the Mississippi River and came just after Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s counter-invasion of the North failed at the battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. Although Grant would still not be given control of the Union armies until March 1864, any hope of Confederate victory had essentially been squashed by losses at Vicksburg and Gettysburg. 
Grant’s revolvers are seen as an “American treasure” and comparable to Abraham Lincoln’s Henry Rifle or George Washington’s flintlock pistols, according to RIAC. The auction company also noted that the guns “only came to light” in 2018 and feature Grant’s portrait on the handle.
They were originally <a href="https://www.kwqc.com/2022/05/02/civil-war-revolvers-owned-by-us-grant-expected-fetch-1-3-million-rock-island-auction/">expected</a> to sell for between $1-3 million but greatly surpassed the initial estimate.
&#8220;We are seeing remarkable prices in the collectible firearms market, and this is a tremendous example,&#8221; said RIAC President Kevin Hogan. &#8220;The growth has been extraordinary year after year, but recently there has been an explosion in the fine arms marketplace. More and more collectors are recognizing the value and importance these objects can carry.”
The auction also featured other historic weapons including a Confederate revolver, one of Wild Bill Hickock’s guns, a firearm belonging to Frank Sinatra, and a weapon owned by former FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover.

A group of panelists on the Friday episode of Fox News&#8217; &#8220;Gutfeld!&#8221; debated the merits of breaking up the United States into smaller regions after a recent poll indicated many Americans would support such a measure.
The panel was discussing a YouGov/BrightLineWatch <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/2-in-3-southern-republicans-want-to-secede-from-union-nearly-half-of-pacific-nw-democrats-poll" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">poll</a> released last week that showed two in three Republicans and half of independents in the South want to secede from the Union. According to the same poll, 47% of Democrats in Pacific coastal states, including Hawaii and Alaska, would be open to breaking off.
&#8220;You know, I&#8217;m probably going to get myself in trouble for this, but would it be the worst thing?&#8221; asked Fox News contributor Lisa Boothe regarding secession. &#8220;I don&#8217;t know, I&#8217;m sick and tired of people who hate this country, I&#8217;m sick and tired of [those] who say the flag is some sort of sign of evilness or oppression, who despise the country we live in. I&#8217;m tired of the government now, you know, people like Biden want to weaponize the government against people who supported Trump.&#8221;
&#8220;So I don&#8217;t know, would it be the worst thing?&#8221; Boothe reiterated, adding that she would want any national divorce to be peaceful.

It is not one of the enumerated powers in the Constitution that — those of us on the Right care about the Bill of Rights — the states are in, they joined, and I have a bigger problem with the states that act like they already have seceded, that don&#8217;t care about flyover country, don&#8217;t care about rural America[.]&#8221;
Bahnsen went on to explain that any modern-day secession would be very complicated because the divide does not fall along state lines as it did during the Civil War. &#8220;Secession doesn&#8217;t work because we don&#8217;t have a country divided red-state and blue-state. We have blue cities, so even within the states you would have to have mini-secessions.&#8221;
Gutfeld went on to jokingly suggest that rural Americans could wall up the cities.

Two in three Republicans in the South and almost half of Democrats in Pacific states want to secede from the Union, according to a new poll.
Conducted in June by YouGov in conjunction with <a href="http://brightlinewatch.org/still-miles-apart-americans-and-the-state-of-u-s-democracy-half-a-year-into-the-biden-presidency/">BrightLineWatch</a>, the survey asked participants in each region of the United States: &#8220;Would you support or oppose [your state] seceding from the United States to join a new union with [list of states in new union]?&#8221;
The regions of the country were divided into the following states:

<li>Pacific: California, Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, and Alaska</li>
<li>Mountain: Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico</li>
<li>South: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee</li>
<li>Heartland: Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, and Nebraska</li>
<li>Northeast: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia</li>

At 37%, the overall percentage of those who want to dissolve the Union was &#8220;arrestingly high,&#8221; BrightLineWatch explained. Republicans and independents in the South were most favorable to secession, at 66% and 50% respectively. Of Democrats polled, 47% in the Pacific states said they want to break off. Sizable portions of independents in the Heartland and Mountain states also wanted to form their own country.
BrightLaneWatch, which conducted a similar survey right after the Capitol riot on January 6, anticipated political tempers would have &#8220;cooled&#8221; with the removal of former President Donald Trump. &#8220;Yet rather than support for secession diminishing over the past six months, as we expected, it rose in every region and among nearly every partisan group,&#8221; they wrote.

&#8220;It&#8217;s almost like they want a civil war,&#8221; Steyn observed. &#8220;All this is rubbish. &#8216;The worst act of political violence since the Civil War,&#8217; says Anderson Cooper, and immediately Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, and Kennedy say, &#8216;What am I? Chopped liver?'&#8221; The four presidents were assassinated.
&#8220;You would not normally compare an insurrection or citizenship laws with a civil war. The reason they&#8217;re doing this is they want a new civil war, but they don&#8217;t want to have to fight it. They&#8217;d rather just have a media campaign civil war that results in half the country being turned into Confederate statues, torn down, and tossed in the garbage can of history,&#8221; Steyn continued.
&#8220;This is preposterous, and the most preposterous thing is that on January the sixth, half the respectable Right went along with the idiotic Democrat media narrative and helped them weaponize it,&#8221; Steyn added.
Regarding why the president of the United States would liken any contemporary political debate to the Civil War, which Carlson described as &#8220;dangerous,&#8221; Steyn said, &#8220;As I said, I think they&#8217;re actually doing this to create the conditions where they can win a kind of cold civil war. They&#8217;ve reached the state of the last Civil War. They think it&#8217;s time for one side to win and one side to lose.&#8221;

Johnston’s entrenched position at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, which protected the rail supply link to Atlanta. On Friday, the Pentagon and Congress took action to appoint new members to a newly formed commission whose main job consists of renaming Confederate-named military bases and property.
Earlier this month, Biden&#8217;s Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin removed Trump-appointed members from the panel. According to <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/defense/538645-pentagon-congress-appoint-panel-members-to-rename-confederate-base-names">The Hill</a>, Austin named four people to the commission, including &#8220;retired Adm. Michelle Howard, a former vice chief of naval operations and the first African American woman to command a U.S. Navy ship; former Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Bob Neller; retired Army Brig. Gen. Ty Seidule, professor emeritus of history at West Point; and Kori Schake, a former State and Defense department official who is now director of foreign and defense policy studies at the right-leaning American Enterprise Institute.&#8221;
In a statement, Austin commented on his picks, saying, “Each of these individuals possesses unique and relevant experience, in and out of government, that I know will inform this important effort.&#8221;
Along with Austin, top Republicans on the House and Senate Armed Services committees and Democratic chairmen appointed members.
Those include retired Army Lt. Gen. Thomas Bostick, the first Black graduate of West Point to serve as head of the Army Corps of Engineers, selected by Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Jack Reed (D-RI). Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) picked Jerry Buchanan, a veteran and &#8220;a private business owner and civic leader in Tulsa,&#8221; a statement from the committee explained.
House Armed Services Committee Chairman Adam Smith (D-WA) picked Secretary of the Smithsonian Lonnie Bunch, who was the former director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL) selected his fellow committee member, Rep. Austin Scott (R-GA).
The commission comes from the recent National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Within three years, the goal of the commission will be &#8220;planning how to change &#8216;names, symbols, displays, monuments and paraphernalia to assets of the Department of Defense that commemorate the Confederate States of America or any person who served voluntarily with the Confederate States of America.&#8217;”
While most of the focus has been on Army bases that are named after Confederate leaders — of which there are ten — the legislation involves picking new names for any &#8220;base, installation, street, building, facility, aircraft, ship, plane, weapon, equipment or any other property owned or controlled by the Department of Defense.&#8221;
According to <a href="https://www.military.com/daily-news/2020/12/02/defense-bill-moving-forward-measure-scrub-confederate-names-bases.html">Military.com</a>:
<blockquote>The 10 Army posts named in honor of Confederate generals are Camp Beauregard and <a href="https://www.military.com/base-guide/fort-polk" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Fort Polk</a> in Louisiana;<a href="https://www.military.com/base-guide/fort-benning" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> Fort Benning</a> and <a href="https://www.military.com/base-guide/fort-gordon" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Fort Gordon</a> in Georgia; <a href="https://www.military.com/base-guide/fort-bragg" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Fort Bragg</a> in North Carolina; Fort A.P. Hill, <a href="https://www.military.com/base-guide/fort-lee" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Fort Lee</a> and Fort Pickett in Virginia; <a href="https://www.military.com/base-guide/fort-rucker" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Fort Rucker</a> in Alabama, and <a href="https://www.military.com/base-guide/fort-hood" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Fort Hood</a> in Texas. The installations were named primarily during the south&#8217;s Jim Crow era in the 1910s and 1940s.</blockquote>
Former President Trump was reportedly not in favor of the renaming efforts, but over the summer of 2020, &#8220;senior military leaders such as then-Defense Secretary Mark Esper and Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy <a href="https://www.military.com/daily-news/2020/12/02/defense-bill-moving-forward-measure-scrub-confederate-names-bases.html">backed the idea</a>&#8221; when tensions in America were high over race relations.
