<p>An Australian court has decided not to pursue perjury charges against actress <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/amber-heard-files-notice-of-intent-to-appeal-verdict-in-johnny-depp-defamation-trial" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Amber Heard</a> following allegations that she lied about how her and her ex-husband <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/johnny-depp-comeback-in-full-swing-after-landing-multi-year-seven-figure-deal-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Johnny Depp&#8217;s</a> Yorkshire terriers got into that country in 2015.</p>
<p>The Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions has decided against charging the 37-year-old actress with <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/amber-heard-is-being-investigated-for-potential-perjury-in-2015-dog-smuggling-incident" target="_blank" rel="noopener">perjury</a> for allegedly lying in 2016 about being unaware of the nation&#8217;s strict animal quarantine regulations. She brought the then-couple&#8217;s dogs Pistol and Boo into the country while Depp was filming his fifth movie in the &#8220;Pirates of the Caribbean&#8221; franchise, Australia&#8217;s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, a biosecurity watchdog, said in a statement to <a href="https://pagesix.com/2023/08/24/australian-prosecutors-drop-case-against-amber-heard-over-dogs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Page Six</a>.</p>

<p>In 2015, Heard was accused of breaking Australia&#8217;s quarantine regulations when she did not declare that she was bringing her dogs to the country upon arrival. When the pups were discovered, the &#8220;Aquaman&#8221; star was charged with two counts of illegally importing the dogs into the country and one count of producing a false document, a spokesman for the Commonwealth Department of Public Prosecutions told <a href="https://people.com/amber-heard-will-not-face-new-charges-over-alleged-illegal-import-of-2-dogs-into-australia-7775516" target="_blank" rel="noopener">People</a>.</p>
<p>In 2016, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/amber-heard-under-foreign-criminal-investigation-in-smuggling-case-told-others-to-lie-to-authorities-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Heard</a> pleaded guilty to providing a false immigration document. A judge sentenced her to a one-month good behavior bond, while the charges of illegally importing the dogs into Australia were dropped, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/australian-prosecutors-drop-case-actor-amber-heard-pet-102473762" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ABC News</a> noted.</p>
<p>At the time, Heard&#8217;s lawyer denied his client had intended to lie when she did not declare her dogs and instead was simply jet lagged and assumed her assistants had taken care of the paperwork.</p>

<p>However, during Depp&#8217;s London libel trial against The Sun newspaper in 2020, the actor and Heard&#8217;s former employee <a href="https://people.com/amber-heard-will-not-face-new-charges-over-alleged-illegal-import-of-2-dogs-into-australia-7775516" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> the actress had known about Australia&#8217;s quarantine rules, ignored them, and put pressure on a staff member to take the blame for breaking the laws, the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/australia-amber-heard-yorkshire-terriers-16f94ee9f78884845dad38e433d4114a" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Associated Press</a> reported.</p>
<p>The discrepancy in the account of how Heard&#8217;s pups got into the country caused prosecutors to look into whether Heard had provided false testimony and lied about her knowledge of Australia&#8217;s laws. The investigation also delved into whether an employee had falsified a statutory declaration under duress, the AP noted.</p>
<p>&#8220;The department collaborated with agencies, both in Australia and overseas, to investigate these claims against Ms Heard,&#8221; the department said in their statement to People. &#8220;A brief of evidence was referred to the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions, who has made the decision not to prosecute in this instance having applied the Prosecution Policy of the Commonwealth.&#8221;</p>

<p>In the Idaho case in particular, social media sleuths have claimed to have <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/01/08/online-sleuths-claim-idaho-murder-suspect-bryan-kohberger-attended-victims-vigil/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spotted the suspect</a> in photos from a vigil for the slain students — and <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/tiktok-personality-gets-sued-after-accusing-professor-of-murdering-4-students-at-university-of-idaho/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">accused a teacher</a> of being involved, sparking a lawsuit.</p>
<p>&#8220;This has become something that really captivated the country, this case has. And so people want to talk about the evidence, they want to talk about the human impact, and these are college students, right?&#8221; Vasquez began, explaining that people were drawn to the case partly because the victims were college students and the unexplained nature of the attacks — at least thus far — made it seem as though it could have happened to anyone.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think it can be helpful to investigators, they pleaded to the public and asked for information about the [murder suspect’s] white Elantra,&#8221; Vasquez added. &#8220;But it could also be harmful when you start naming someone.&#8221;</p>
<p>In addition to receiving media offers after her big win on Depp&#8217;s behalf, Vasquez was promoted to partner at her law firm, Brown Rudnick, and reportedly received job offers from other firms as well. <p>According to a <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2022/12/19/amber-heard-paying-1-million-settle-johnny-depp-defamation-case/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> from entertainment website TMZ, Heard will pay $1 million to Depp in order to settle the case permanently after she was ordered over the summer to pay him 10 times that amount. The report indicated that the payment is likely to come from Heard&#8217;s insurance company rather than her own bank account, however.</p>
<p>Heard released a lengthy statement addressing the settlement, sharing it publicly via Instagram:</p>

<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s important for me to say that I never chose this. I defended my truth and in doing so my life as I knew it was destroyed,&#8221; Heard began, claiming that the backlash she had received on social media was sexist and only proved that women who come forward to claim that they are victims of domestic violence are re-victimized by the court of public opinion.</p>
<p>&#8220;I have made no admission. This is not an act of concession,&#8221; she insisted, going on to claim that because the American court had decided against her, the British justice system — which &#8220;vindicated&#8221; her — was the only system of the two that functioned properly.</p>
<p>Heard argued that the U.S. court had thrown out good evidence that would have proven her claims, saying that the entire process had humiliated her and had proven that the in the American court system, &#8220;popularity and power mattered more than reason and due process.&#8221; Her decision to settle, she said, was borne solely out of her desire to avoid going through the process a third time.</p>
<p>&#8220;For too many years I have been caged in an arduous and expensive legal process, which has shown itself unable to protect me and my right to free speech,&#8221; Heard continued, adding that she intended to spend her time with her daughter and repeating her claim that the system was slanted against female victims. &#8220;Women shouldn’t have to face abuse or bankruptcy for speaking her truth, but unfortunately it is not uncommon.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;I will not be threatened, disheartened or dissuaded by what happened from speaking the truth. No one can and no one will take that from me. My voice forever remains the most valuable asset I have,&#8221; she asserted.</p>
<p>Heard testified at length during her Virginia trial over the summer, but the jury did not find her testimony to be <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/crocodile-tears-juror-reveals-what-tipped-the-scales-in-johnny-depp-amber-heard-trial/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credible</a> and sided mostly with Depp.</p>
<p>Depp has not yet commented on the settlement.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/amber-heard" target="_blank" rel="noopener">36-year-old</a> actress filed a lawsuit against the New York Marine and General Insurance Company after it reached out to a judge to get out of paying the $8.3 million Heard owes Depp after their highly publicized defamation trial, <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2022/11/22/amber-heard-countersues-insurance-company-depp-verdict-policy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TMZ</a> reported.</p>
<p>New York Marine told the judge that after a jury found the actress had committed &#8220;willful misconduct&#8221; in her defamation of Depp — under the California law — they wouldn&#8217;t have to cover Heard because a jury found she had committed a willful act.</p>

<p>In court documents obtained by the outlet, the &#8220;Aquaman&#8221; <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/amber-heard-files-notice-of-intent-to-appeal-verdict-in-johnny-depp-defamation-trial" target="_blank" rel="noopener">star</a> argued that the policy had an &#8220;unconditional deal,&#8221; which meant that New York Marine would have to pay her defense costs and judgments up to a million dollars, regardless, the <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11458181/Amber-Heard-says-million-dollar-insurance-policy-cover-Johnny-Depp-verdict.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Daily Mail</a> reported. She is suing the insurer for &#8220;breach of contract&#8221; and more.</p>
<p>New York Marine wants the actress to pay them $621,693 in exchange for their contribution to Heard&#8217;s defense fund because the insurance company claimed its lawyers were kept out of some of the legal proceedings. The outlet noted, the insurers are now suing the actress to get out of paying for the libel settlement.</p>
<p>In June, a jury found that the &#8220;Zombieland&#8221; star had defamed Depp in an op-ed the actress penned in <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/ive-seen-how-institutions-protect-men-accused-of-abuse-heres-what-we-can-do/2018/12/18/71fd876a-02ed-11e9-b5df-5d3874f1ac36_story.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Washington Post</a> in 2018 about domestic violence, awarding the &#8220;Pirates of the Caribbean&#8221; star a total of $15 million in monetary damages, though that was dropped to $10.35 million due to Virginia law, as <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/jury-awards-johnny-depp-15-million-but-hell-get-millions-less-heres-why" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Wire</a> previously reported.</p>
<p>The same jury also awarded the actress $2 million for her defamation claim after she won one of the three countersuit claims she had against Depp&#8217;s lawyer in the case.</p>

<p>Whitney notably <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/heard-friend-jennifer-howell-expected-to-testify-for-johnny-depp-blow-up-sisters-staircase-incident">testified</a> on behalf of her sister during the highly publicized six-week-long defamation trial, in part accusing Depp of smacking Amber in the face during an alleged 2015 incident in the couple’s penthouse.</p>
<p>“He called her a ‘used-up trash bag,’ she called him ‘old and fat,&#8217;” Whitney <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/05/18/amber-heards-sister-says-johnny-depp-hit-her-during-blowout/">recalled</a> of the alleged incident. Then, Depp allegedly hit Whitney in the back, sparking Amber to “land one” on the actor, Whitney said. In response, Depp allegedly repeatedly smacked Amber in the face, the sister added.</p>
<p>During the intense trial, Amber Heard detailed serious allegations of abuse at the hands of Depp, including a rape with a possibly broken Maker’s Mark bottle. Depp and his legal team told the jury that Amber Heard perpetrated a #MeToo hoax to take from Depp and also to punish him for leaving her.</p>
<p>During closing arguments, Depp attorney Camille Vasquez said that Amber Heard &#8220;gave the performance of her life.&#8221;</p>
<p>“She came into this courtroom prepared to give the performance of her life, and she gave it,” Vasquez <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/camille-vasquez-accuses-amber-heard-sobbing-without-tears-1710914">said</a>. “Ms. Heard’s acting coach, Kristina Sexton, testified that Ms. Heard has difficulty crying when she is acting. You saw it, Ms. Heard sobbing without tears while spinning elaborate, exaggerated, fantastical accounts of abuse.”</p>
<p>“It was a performance,” the attorney told the jury. “She told you what she thinks you need to hear to convict this man as a domestic abuser and a rapist. She wants you to believe she was abused countless times. Countless times over the entire course of their relationship. But as Mr. [Ben] Chew and I promised you, the evidence just does not bear that out.”</p>

<p>Actor Johnny Depp&#8217;s comeback appears to be in full swing after he reportedly landed a multi-year, seven-figure deal to continue as the celebrity face of Dior&#8217;s bestselling Sauvage cologne.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/johnny-depp">59-year-old</a> actor reportedly signed a new contract with the fashion house after first agreeing to promote the brand in 2015, <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2022/08/09/johnny-depp-signs-new-deal-dior-sauvage-fragrance-cologne/">TMZ</a> reported. Sources told the outlet Depp did a photo shoot with fashion photographer Greg Williams before performing in a rock concert with Jeff Beck in Paris that would be used in a new Dior advertising campaign.</p>
<p>It comes after the &#8220;Pirates of the Caribbean&#8221; star appeared in a series of black-and-white photos posted on Dior Beauty&#8217;s Instagram account on Monday that were captured backstage before a Paris performance.</p>

<p>The &#8220;Charlie and the Chocolate Factory&#8221; star has been working on turning his career around after winning a $10 million judgment against his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, in a highly-publicized defamation trial.</p>
<p>In June, a jury found the &#8220;Aquaman&#8221; star had defamed <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-jury-gave-me-my-life-back-johnny-depp-releases-statement-after-winning-big-in-defamation-case-against-ex-wife-amber-heard">Depp</a> in an op-ed the actress penned in <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/ive-seen-how-institutions-protect-men-accused-of-abuse-heres-what-we-can-do/2018/12/18/71fd876a-02ed-11e9-b5df-5d3874f1ac36_story.html">The Washington Post</a> in 2018 about domestic violence.</p>
<p>Following the verdict, Johnny released a lengthy <a href="https://twitter.com/Angenette5/status/1532086934016864256?s=20&amp;t=aZxN2MzUpTGToW4BVRpRFA">statement</a> thanking the jury for giving him his &#8220;life back.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;False, very serious and criminal allegations were levied at me via the media, which triggered an endless barrage of hateful content, although no charges were ever brought against me,&#8221; Depp&#8217;s statement read, in part.</p>
<p>&#8220;It had already traveled around the world twice within a nanosecond and it had a seismic impact on my life and my career,&#8221; Depp added, as he explained that he pursued the case in the first place to &#8220;reveal the truth.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;And six years later, the jury gave me my life back,&#8221; the actor continued. &#8220;I am truly humbled.&#8221;</p>

Johnny Depp Comeback In Full Swing After Landing Multi-Year, Seven-Figure Deal: Report

<p>The City University of New York (<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/city-university-of-new-york-cuny">CUNY</a>) removed an article on its website about a Hunter College graduate because she had worked on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/johnny-depp">Johnny Depp’s</a> legal team in his defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard.</p>
<p>Yarelyn Mena graduated from Hunter College, part of New York’s public college system, in 2015 and is an associate attorney at Brown Rudnick LLP. At 29, she was also the younger lawyer on Depp’s legal team.</p>
<p>“I worked with the team on the opening and the closing and was the master of the facts of all the evidence,” Mena said in the now-deleted article. “If someone needed pictures or text messages, I would look them up and assist everyone as we went along.”</p>
<p>But because she worked in defense of a man who had been accused of domestic violence, CUNY removed the article celebrating one of its graduates. A <a href="https://www1.cuny.edu/mu/cunyverse/2022/08/03/this-cuny-grad-was-the-youngest-lawyer-to-serve-on-johnny-depps-legal-team/">link</a> to the article now includes the following statement:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>We appreciate everyone who shared their concerns about an article in our newsletter featuring a recent CUNY graduate who worked on Johnny Depp’s legal team. We understand the strong negative emotions this article elicited and apologize for publishing the item. We have removed it from our CUNYverse blog. The article was not meant to convey support for Mr. Depp, implicitly or otherwise, or to call into question any allegations that were made by Amber Heard. Domestic violence is a serious issue in our society and we regret any pain this article may have caused.</em></p></blockquote>
<p>Brooklyn College professor K.C. Johnson noted the school’s removal on Twitter, explaining that Mena is the daughter of two immigrants from the Dominican Republic. Johnson also explained that the deleted article contained advice for students “who might want a future in law, but was removed, it seems, because of protests about the CUNY grad&#8217;s client.”</p>

<p>CUNY’s removal of the article and statement is all the more curious because Depp won his defamation case against Heard and showed evidence that <em>he</em> was the victim of domestic violence at the hands of his ex-wife. As The Daily Wire reported in June, Depp was awarded a total of $15 million in monetary damages, while Heard was awarded $2 million for her countersuit. The counterclaim that Heard won related to a statement from one of Depp’s attorneys, not Depp himself. Following the award, the judge noted that Virginia law caps punitive damages at $350,000, meaning Depp was awarded $10.35 million for a total of $8 million after removing Heard’s damages.</p>
