“Rust” director Joel Souza says he regrets writing the movie.
Souza, 51, was injured and cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed while filming a scene for the movie when a prop gun held by Alec Baldwin accidentally discharged.
Baldwin&#8217;s involuntary manslaughter trial was dismissed with prejudice in July 2024 after a judge ruled that prosecutors had deliberately withheld key evidence, preventing any future charges. While Baldwin was cleared, armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison.
The director is currently promoting the film ahead of its United States release on Friday, but appears to have mixed feelings about it.
“You think about the chain of events that started that morning. Bad decision after bad decision was made…talk about the butterfly effect,” Souza told <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/film/2025/apr/28/rust-joel-souza-alec-baldwin-halyna-hutchins-shooting">The Guardian</a> in a newly published interview. “I wish I never wrote the damn movie.”
The “Rust” director also discussed his apprehension with firearms. “I didn’t grow up around [guns] and I don’t like the culture,” he said. “Guns make me recoil. The idea of touching one, picking one up, I find very off-putting.”
However, using guns was necessary for making a Western drama like “Rust.” Souza was planning to abandon the project unfinished. But he says Hutchins’ family insisted on something different.
“The family wanted it completed,” Souza told The Guardian. “I’d been repelled by the thought of going back, but now it started to appeal. And I couldn’t live with the idea of someone else doing it.”
“I was a mess going in and a mess coming out,” he added. “The crew carried me through. My family carried me through. Emotionally, I was all over the map.”
Previously, “Rust” premiered in Poland at the Camerimage International Film Festival in late November. Souza <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/alec-baldwins-rust-trailer-drops-nearly-four-years-after-fatal-on-set-shooting?author=Katie+Jerkovich&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Alec+Baldwin%E2%80%99s+%E2%80%98Rust%E2%80%99+Trailer+Drops+Nearly+Four+Years+After+Fatal+On-Set+Shooting">confirmed</a> to Vanity Fair that the scene which included the fatal shooting had been removed “in its entirety.”
“Gone. Not just that, but also a few things leading up to it,” Souza said at the time. “Everything needed to be entirely reconceived there. There were a few things that came before that now wouldn’t make story sense. So we just sort of eliminated it and came up with something entirely different.”
“I’m not going back to that,” he added. “I’m glad you asked. I don’t want anyone who ever does see this to be waiting for that. No one ever pushed to keep anything like that.”

The movie trailer for Alec Baldwin’s Western &#8220;Rust&#8221; dropped nearly four years after the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Hutchins was killed on a New Mexico film set when a gun <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/alec-baldwin">Baldwin</a> was holding discharged a bullet. Writer-director Joel Souza was also injured during the incident.
“In 1880s Kansas, recently orphaned Lucas McCalister (Patrick Scott McDermott) accidentally kills a rancher and is sentenced to hang,” a description with the one-minute plus video on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oc6q3scsTwg">YouTube</a> read.
“In a twist of fate, his estranged grandfather, the notorious outlaw Harland Rust (Academy Award nominee Alec Baldwin), breaks him out of jail and takes him on the run toward Mexico,” it added. “As they flee across the unforgiving wilderness, the fugitive pair must outrun the determined U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a ruthless bounty hunter named &#8216;Preacher&#8217; (Travis Fimmel).”

In November 2024, Baldwin’s indie western had its world premiere at Poland’s Camerimage <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/t/international/">International</a> Film Festival, with Souza and cinematographer Bianca Cline, who stepped in to finish the film after a wrongful death lawsuit was settled in October 2022, in attendance, <a href="https://variety.com/2025/film/news/rust-trailer-alec-baldwin-first-footage-shooting-1236348441/">Variety</a> noted.
Ahead of the premiere, Souza talked to <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/story/rust-filmmaker-joel-souza-finally-speaks-about-the-fatal-shooting">Vanity Fair</a> about the fatal shooting, returning to the film set, and finishing the movie Hutchins was shooting, making it clear the fatal scene she had shot had vanished “in its entirety.”

On October 21, 2021, Baldwin began filming a scene when the gun he was holding fired a live round that killed Hutchins and injured Souza. The 66-year-old actor repeatedly maintained that there was “no trigger pull.”
He was charged with involuntary manslaughter and faced up to 18 months in prison. However, the charges were <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/judge-dismisses-criminal-case-against-alec-baldwin-after-prosecutors-hid-evidence">dismissed</a> on the third day of his trial in July 2024, with the judge ruling that the prosecution had hidden evidence from the defense.
The armorer in charge of weapons on set, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for her role in Hutchins’ death.

Alec Baldwin’s wife Hilaria Baldwin hit back at critics after a red carpet interview of her berating her husband went viral, with many calling her out for speaking to her spouse in public that way.
In an Instagram <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DHZcVc9ITde/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=embed_video_watch_again">post</a>, Hilaria and Alec addressed the viral clip, as they joked and mouthed a few of the comments she made to the “30 Rock” star in the interview, in which she accused him of interrupting her, as previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/clip-of-alec-baldwin-getting-berated-by-his-wife-goes-viral-when-im-talking-youre-not-talking">reported.</a>
“That is called, what&#8217;s the word of the day?&#8221; Hilaria said to her husband in the post on Wednesday.
And Alec replied, &#8220;Manterrupting.”

During an Extra interview about their reality show, “The Baldwins” when the couple were asked if fans could expect season two. Hilaria did not answer right away. This led Alec to joking, “The Hilaria Show.”
“No, I think we are going to see, you know, we’re going to see how it feels to be out there,” Hilaria said.
“It’s gonna be great. You’re a winner,” Alec cut in, to which Hilaria said, “Oh my God. When I’m talking, you’re not talking.”
“I’m sorry,” the “Saturday Night Live” star replied. Hilaria responded by holding her hands up and repeating, “When I’m talking, you’re not talking.”
Addressing the interviewer, the 41-year-old former yoga instructor quipped, “This is why we’ll just have to cut him out of the show.”
At another point in the interview, Hilaria accused her husband of “distracting” her as he jokingly interrupted the interview.
She said, “Oh my God, you’re distracting me right now. Now you’re just doing that, why? Why are you distracting me?”
Baldwin apologized and said, “I’m just captivated by your beauty.” 
The actor called her “beautiful” again, which made Hilaria turn around and say again, “Oh my God! Stop, you’re annoying me. Stop. It’s not cute. No, he’s distracting me.”
Alec and Hilaria have been married since 2012.

A video clip of Hilaria Baldwin snapping at her husband, actor Alec Baldwin, has gone viral, with viewers shocked that she would speak to her spouse that way in public.
Hilaria was talking to Extra at the grand re-opening of Planet Hollywood in NYC last week alongside Alec when the incident took place. The couple was discussing whether a second season of their newly released reality show, “The Baldwins,” was going forward.

The interviewer asked if fans could expect season two and Hilaria did not answer right away. This led to Alec joking, “The Hilaria Show.”

Actor Alec Baldwin recently lost his temper with comedian Jason Scoop, who was dressed as Donald Trump during an interaction on a New York City street. The comedian triggered Baldwin by bringing up the death of “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. 
A video of the confrontation shows the actor threatening the comedian, saying, “If this camera wasn’t here, I’d snap your f***ing neck in half and break your f***-ing neck right here.” Their interaction has since gone viral on social media.
Baldwin was loading items into the trunk of his car when the comedian approached him.

“Alec, it’s your favorite president,” Scoop can be heard saying in the clip, alluding to the fact that Baldwin impersonates the current president on Saturday Night Live. “Look, Alec, I will offer you a total pardon, because I want to be friends, right? I want to be friends. I will give you a total pardon for murdering that woman if you kiss the ring.”
Scoop points his ring finger at Baldwin, “Kiss the ring, Alec.” At first, the actor ignores Scoop, but the comedian kept poking the cage. 
“Alec, if you don’t want that pardon for murdering that woman in cold blood, you can call it first degree, you can call it whatever you want, but it was not good. She’s looking down on me right now, smiling, happy. ‘Thank you for confronting the man who took me out, who killed me.’”
At that point, Baldwin responded.
“You got a camera on me here?” the actor says, approaching Scoop and instructing him to look him in the eye. “You realize my kids live in this building? I want you to know something. I want you to be real careful,” he adds before threatening to “break his f***ing neck.”
Scoop remains in character as Baldwin tells him to leave. “I want you to get out of here,” Baldwin says, telling him, “I’ll take that camera and shove it up your a**.”
Baldwin was accused of involuntary manslaughter in October 2021. Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed when a gun Baldwin was holding discharged on set, but the actor has maintained all along that he never pulled the trigger. The prosecution argued that Baldwin was reckless and criminally negligent for firing the gun, while the defense maintained that as an actor, their client was not responsible for gun safety on set.
Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed the case on the third day of the trial after learning that the prosecution did not reveal a cache of bullets to the defense. That decision was later appealed, but then the prosecutor dropped the appeal in December, effectively ending Baldwin’s battle in the courts.
The actor previously settled a civil lawsuit with Hutchins&#8217; family.

TLC said the reality show “blends the highs and lows of family life, with the challenges and humor that come while raising a large family in the public eye,” the Hollywood Reporter <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/the-baldwins-reality-series-trailer-premiere-date-1236118792/">reported</a>.
The official tagline for the show said that it “will feature hilarious moments around the dinner table to candid discussions about mental health and their ever-evolving parenting style.”

A <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/crime">criminal</a> case against actor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/alec-baldwin">Alec Baldwin</a> related to the fatal shooting on the set of his movie &#8220;Rust&#8221; ended Monday when a prosecutor dropped her appeal of the case&#8217;s dismissal.
Special Prosecutor Kari Morrissey withdrew the appeal, per <a href="https://www.reuters.com/legal/alec-baldwin-manslaughter-case-dropped-by-new-mexico-prosecutor-2024-12-24/">Reuters</a>, effectively ending the criminal proceedings that have been ongoing since the incident occurred in 2021 in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/new-mexico">New Mexico</a>.
The decision was made after the state attorney general’s office said that it “did not intend to exhaustively pursue the appeal on behalf of the prosecution,” Morrissey said.

The prosecution argued last July that Baldwin was reckless and criminally negligent for firing the gun, while the defense maintained that as an actor, their client was not responsible for gun safety on set.
Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed the case on the third day of the trial after learning that the prosecution did not reveal a cache of bullets to the defense, per <a href="https://variety.com/2024/film/news/alec-baldwin-manslaughter-appeal-dropped-1236258765/">Variety</a>, and that this evidence was potentially crucial. But Morrissey later appealed that decision, saying the bullets were irrelevant to the case. 
Baldwin&#8217;s lawyers Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro made a statement on this most recent development, saying: “Today’s decision to dismiss the appeal is the final vindication of what Alec Baldwin and his attorneys have said from the beginning — this was an unspeakable tragedy but Alec Baldwin committed no crime. The rule of law remains intact in New Mexico.”
The film’s armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was accused of loading the gun, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in March. She appealed her conviction after the charges against Baldwin were dismissed, but her appeal was denied.
Rust’s safety coordinator David Halls pleaded no contest to negligent use of a firearm. He was sentenced to six months of unsupervised parole.
Baldwin previously settled a civil lawsuit filed by loved ones of Hutchins in 2022. &#8220;I have no interest in engaging in recriminations or attribution of blame (to the producers or Mr. Baldwin),&#8221; the cinematographer&#8217;s husband Matthew said in a statement at the time.
&#8220;All of us believe Halyna’s death was a terrible accident. I am grateful that the producers and the entertainment community have come together to pay tribute to Halyna’s final work,” the widower said.
Meanwhile, Hutchins’ mother Olga Solovey <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mother-of-cinematographer-killed-on-set-boycotts-rust-premiere-says-alec-baldwin-will-profit">boycotted</a> the premiere of the movie in Poland last month, saying she sees the film’s release as an opportunity for Baldwin to “unjustly profit” from her daughter’s death.

“Rust” is premiering at the International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography Camerimage in Torun, Poland, three years after Hutchins was shot and killed. Hutchins’ mother, Olga Solovey, released a statement saying she sees the film’s release as an opportunity for Baldwin to “unjustly profit” from her daughter’s death, the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/poland-film-premiere-rust-baldwin-7479e578096359df46251c262e4f9d3d">Associated Press reported</a>.
“It was always my hope to meet my daughter in Poland to watch her work come alive on screen,&#8221; Solovey began in the statement, referencing the fact that director Joel Souza, who was wounded when the revolver Baldwin held fired, was slated to introduce the film at the festival.
“Unfortunately, that was ripped away from me when Alec Baldwin discharged his gun and killed my daughter,&#8221; the statement continued. “Alec Baldwin continues to increase my pain with his refusal to apologize to me and his refusal to take responsibility for her death. Instead, he seeks to unjustly profit from his killing of my daughter.”
“That is the reason why I refuse to attend the festival for the promotion of Rust, especially now when there is still no justice for my daughter,&#8221; Solovey said.

In December 2021, Baldwin told George Stephanopoulos in an interview on ABC News that “I didn’t pull the trigger” of the prop gun that fired and killed Hutchins. On Thursday, New Mexico Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer filed her judgment that the prosecutors&#8217; arguments have already been presented and said they provided nothing new that would warrant reconsidering her prior decision to dismiss the charges against Baldwin, the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/alec-baldwin-rust-shooting-halyna-hutchins-051dfa2cb09a3cbd355aee9ad6ed19c4">Associated Press</a> reported.
“Because the state’s amended motion raises arguments previously made, and arguments that the state elected not to raise earlier, the court does not find the amended motion well taken,” the judge wrote, adding that the request was also untimely (outside the time frame for appeal).
Earlier this year, Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter. He faced up to 18 months in prison, as previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/alec-baldwin-indicted-on-charge-of-involuntary-manslaughter-in-rust-shooting">reported</a>. The charges stem from an incident on the New Mexico film set of Baldwin’s movie “Rust,” on October 21, 2021, when Baldwin began filming a scene and the gun he was holding fired a live round that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured the film’s director, Joel Souza. Baldwin repeatedly maintained that there was “no trigger pull.”
Following the decision Thursday, the special prosecutor in the case, Kari Morrissey, told the AP she would be appealing the latest ruling, disagreeing with the judge.

Two special prosecutors, Morrissey and Jason Lewis, presented their case to the grand jury after receiving further analysis about the gun used, <a href="https://variety.com/2024/biz/news/alec-baldwin-manslaughter-rust-shooting-again-1235875855/">Variety</a> noted.
Baldwin’s attorneys, Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, released a statement at the time that said, “We look forward to our day in court.”
In January 2023, the Santa Fe County District Attorney’s Office charged Baldwin with two counts of involuntary manslaughter following Hutchins&#8217; death. The charges were dismissed without prejudice in April after the actor’s legal team claimed the gun had been modified in some way which caused it to malfunction, the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/alec-baldwin-rust-set-shooting-charge-59e437602146168ced27fd8e03acb636?taid=65aacd8c30e2620001dd1747&amp;utm_campaign=TrueAnthem&amp;utm_medium=AP&amp;utm_source=Twitter">Associated Press</a> noted.
Prosecutors made clear at the time, “This decision does not absolve Mr. Baldwin of criminal culpability and charges may be refiled.”
In April, the film’s weapons supervisor, 26-year-old <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/woman-involved-in-alec-baldwin-rust-shooting-sentenced">Hannah Gutierrez-Reed</a>, was sentenced to 18 months in prison after she was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of Hutchins. In September, Sommer rejected Gutierrez-Reed&#8217;s request to dismiss her conviction or have a new trial following the dismissal of charges against Baldwin, the AP noted.

Speaking recently to <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/story/rust-filmmaker-joel-souza-finally-speaks-about-the-fatal-shooting">Vanity Fair</a>, Souza talked about the fatal shooting, returning to the film set, and finishing the film Hutchins was shooting, making it clear the fatal scene she had shot has vanished “in its entirety.”
“Gone. Not just that, but also a few things leading up to it,” Souza said. “Everything needed to be entirely reconceived there. There were a few things that came before that now wouldn’t make story sense. So we just sort of eliminated it and came up with something entirely different.”
“I’m not going back to that,” he added. “I’m glad you asked. I don’t want anyone who ever does see this to be waiting for that. No one ever pushed to keep anything like that.”
