A 40-year-old New Mexico man has been charged over arson attacks that targeted the headquarters of the Republican Party and a Tesla showroom in Albuquerque, the Justice Department announced.
The DOJ <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/albuquerque-man-charged-connection-arson-attacks-tesla-dealership-and-republican-party-new">said</a> Monday that 40-year-old Jamison Wagner had been arrested by the FBI over the attacks, which burned out two Teslas and left significant damage to the GOP headquarters in Albuquerque. Attorney General Pam Bondi said that the DOJ would be seeking 40 years in prison for Wagner if he is convicted.
Wagner was charged with two counts of malicious damage or destruction of property by fire or explosive.
“Let this be the final lesson to those taking part in this ongoing wave of political violence,” Bondi said. “We will arrest you, we will prosecute you, and we will not negotiate. Crimes have consequences.”
The DOJ said that it had identified Wagner through evidence left at the scene of the attacks and surveillance footage.
The first attack took place on February 9 when two Tesla vehicles outside the Tesla Albuquerque Showroom were targeted with a homemade incendiary device. Inside one of the vehicles was found a glass container with napalm material. Other vehicles and the outside of the showroom were spray-painted with swastikas and the words “Die Elon,” “Tesla Nazi Inc,” and “Die Tesla Nazi.”

The next attack took place on March 30, when the headquarters for the New Mexico GOP were firebombed, leaving significant damage. The phrase “ICE = KKK” was spray-painted on the building as well.

Investigators said they linked Wagner to the attacks by matching his Hyundai Accent to one leaving the scene of the GOP headquarters after the bombing and matching his physical appearance to surveillance footage of the suspect.
The FBI also said it found materials for making incendiary devices at his home, spray paint matching the vandalism at both crime scenes, an “ICE=KKK” stencil matching what was spray-painted at the GOP headquarters, and at least eight suspected incendiary devices.
“This arrest is part of the FBI’s aggressive efforts to investigate and hold accountable those who have targeted Tesla facilities in various states across the country,” said FBI Director Kash Patel. “Under Attorney General Bondi’s leadership, we will continue to locate and arrest those responsible for these acts of domestic terrorism, and the FBI will work with partners at the Department of Justice to ensure such lawbreakers face justice.”

Here are the facts: Amber Thurman, a woman from Georgia whose pregnancy with twins was too far along to abort in her home state, traveled to North Carolina, where she was given the deadly abortion pills mifepristone and misoprostol.
The chemical abortion was incomplete — meaning her children, or parts of them, were still in her womb — and she needed emergency room care but doctors at the hospital in Georgia she turned to for help waited 20 hours to perform a surgical abortion. The young woman, mother of a 6-year-old son, died. 
<a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/georgia-abortion-ban-amber-thurman-death" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ProPublica</a> broke the story. Donors to the self-described “independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism with moral force” include groups like the Ford Foundation and Pew Charitable Trusts, that regularly <a href="https://www.ewtn.com/catholicism/library/foundations-of-death-12061" target="_blank" rel="noopener">support pro-abortion organizations.</a>

ProPublica has since reported on a <a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/candi-miller-abortion-ban-death-georgia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">second woman who died</a> after taking abortion pills that she bought online. An autopsy performed on Candi Miller found fetal tissue in her womb, and a lethal combination of painkillers in her blood. And yet an unnamed committee of “maternal health experts” — one that does not share its findings with the public — blamed Georgia’s Heartbeat law, and her family reportedly told a coroner she was afraid to go to the hospital because of the law.
Vice President Kamala Harris gave a speech Friday in Atlanta, where she jumped on the bandwagon with abortion advocates who are overjoyed to be able to blame mothers’ deaths on laws that protect babies from abortion.
Certainly there are questions to be answered in Ms. Thurman’s case, by physicians in both North Carolina and Georgia. But it’s Georgia’s Heartbeat law being blamed for the woman’s death. This is simply not true.
Several women in the last decade have died after botched abortions and delayed follow-up medical care. You did not read their names in Newsweek or the New York Times or the Associated Press. 
<a href="https://www.abqjournal.com/news/local/unm-clinic-settle-for-1-26m-in-abortion-death/article_0a9ceea1-2ad8-5745-89da-995864522bd6.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Keisha Atkins</a> was 23 years old when she had an abortion at 24 weeks at Southwestern Women’s Options in Albuquerque in February 2017. Two days into the multi-day procedure, she was in pain and having trouble breathing. More than nine hours after arriving at Southwestern she was finally transferred to the hospital at the University of New Mexico, where, more than five hours later, she was finally taken to the emergency room. One hundred minutes later, she was declared dead. Eventually Southwestern and UNM paid $1.26 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit.
Abortion killed Keisha.
<a href="https://www.christianpost.com/news/planned-parenthood-to-pay-2m-settlement-to-family-of-botched-abortion-victim.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tonya Reaves</a> died in Chicago after an incomplete second-trimester abortion at Planned Parenthood in July 2012. She would have to undergo two more abortion procedures at a hospital before dying. She was 26 years old. Eventually Planned Parenthood was ordered to pay her surviving son $2 million.

<a href="https://www.mlive.com/news/kalamazoo/2017/04/dead_womans_ultrasound_showed.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cree Erwin-Sheppard</a> was 24 when she had an <a href="https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/gosnell-abortion-worker-drugs-given-woman-murder/2086843/">abortion at a Planned Parenthood</a> in Kalamazoo, Michigan on July 2, 2016. She was dead two days later. Her autopsy showed “retained products of conception.”
Abortion killed Cree.
There are others whose names you don’t know. <a href="https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/jun/6/4-maryland-abortion-clinics-shut-down-3-doctors-su/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Maria Santiago</a>. <a href="https://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2010/01/27/Death-at-NYC-abortion-clinic-investigated/55421264620300/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Alexandra Nunez</a>. <a href="https://newsbusters.org/blogs/jill-stanek/2015/03/07/lakisha-who-npr-showcases-cleveland-abortion-clinic-skips-woman-who" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lakisha Wilson</a>. <a href="https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/gosnell-abortion-worker-drugs-given-woman-murder/2086843/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Karnamaya Mongar</a>. And many more than these.
These women did not become the media’s cause celebre because their tragic — and preventable — deaths followed abortions, and none dare speak a bad word about a procedure whose advocates have elevated it to the status of national sacrament. All of them died while Roe v. Wade was still intact, and all in states where abortion was easy to access.
Until recently, New Mexico was the late-term abortion epicenter of the nation. Illinois and Michigan, then as now, have few restrictions on abortion. Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York all had — and still have — liberal abortion laws.
Abortion killed these women, as it killed Amber Thurman and Candi Miller. All of them were women of color so certainly racism could have been a factor in their delayed follow-up care. That’s an issue that needs to be explored.
Most importantly, the women’s stories should bring a much-needed look into the safety of chemical abortion. But they won’t. The Charlotte Lozier Institute reported in 2021 that chemical abortion led to many more emergency room visits than surgical abortion, but abortion advocates had that paper <a href="https://www.ncregister.com/news/attacking-the-messenger-abortion-lobby-targets-charlotte-lozier-institute" target="_blank" rel="noopener">retracted</a> because it contradicted their narrative that chemical abortion is a safe and private way for a mother to kill her child surrounded by the comforts of home.
The truth about chemical abortion is that it causes severe pain and bleeding for which few women are prepared. It turns women’s homes into abortion facilities, and leaves many of them with the unforgettable image of their babies being <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/abortion-pill-turns-every-womans-home-potential-site-trauma-opinion-1783180" target="_blank" rel="noopener">flushed down the toilet</a>. Chemical abortion killed Amber Thurman and Candi Miller, and other women before then.
Women and their children deserve better than abortion, and the American people deserve the truth.

A small business owner in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/albuquerque" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Albuquerque</a> shot and killed a man who <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/crime" target="_blank" rel="noopener">broke into</a> his shop in the night.
The man, who refused to be identified for his own safety, said he was sleeping in his newly-purchased smoke shop in the International District, when a man broke in and began waving weapons at him. The store had already been broken into twice before. Albuquerque Police are investigating the shooting as a &#8220;justifiable homicide.&#8221;
&#8220;PD detectives are investigating an overnight shooting as a justifiable homicide,&#8221; police said in a <a href="https://www.cabq.gov/police/news/apd-investigating-shooting-as-justifiable-homicide" target="_blank" rel="noopener">news release</a> over the weekend. &#8220;Detectives learned the owner of the business &#8230; shot an intruder who appeared to [sic] breaking in with burglary tools. The man who was shot by the business owner died as a result of gunshot wounds. He has not yet been identified. Detectives are working with the District Attorney’s Office as they continue to investigate the business owner’s claims of self-defense. The man was released from the scene after an interview with detectives.&#8221;
According to local news outlet <a href="https://www.kob.com/new-mexico/albuquerque-business-owner-speaks-out-on-fatal-shooting/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KOB 4</a>, the incident occurred in the early morning hours on Saturday. The shop owner told the outlet that there had already been two break-in attempts, and he had been sleeping in the store since the first one. The shop has not even opened for business yet.
The owner was woken up in the middle of the night by scratching sounds coming from the side wall of the shop. Unbeknownst to the owner, a man had been scratching through the outer wall of the store. About an hour later, the man broke through the wall.  He pushed over several boxes of merchandise and entered the store, carrying a hammer and an axe or a chisel of some sort. The owner, fearing for his life, grabbed a gun and told the intruder to leave or he would shoot. Instead of leaving, the burglar approached him, swinging his tools, so he fired. The owner then called police.
Images of the hole included with KOB&#8217;s report showed a large opening in the wall, with insulation ripped away and the interior wall and floor molding destroyed. As of Monday, the owner said he has since boarded up the hole, and will be installing more security cameras soon.
Shop owners sleeping in their stores in an effort to thwart burglars is a growing trend across the country. The Daily Wire reported in January that restaurant and bar owners in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/houston-restaurant-owners-are-sleeping-in-their-businesses-armed-to-keep-out-burglars-because-of-citys-lax-bail-policies" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Houston </a>are sleeping in their establishments, armed, in order to protect them from robbers. The owners said that their businesses have been broken into repeatedly, sometimes by the same suspect. They placed the blame on Houston’s bail policies, which have resulted in more criminals out on the streets.
A 2021 investigation from ABC affiliate KTRK found that Houston’s bail policies have allowed more criminals back onto the streets. The outlet found that in 2011, just 3.5% of cases filed in Harris County court resulted in the defendant being released on felony bond; in 2021, the defendant was released in 18.8% of cases, nearly six times as often.
The investigation also found that criminals were committing more crimes while out on bail. In 2011, just 3.5% of cases involved a defendant who was already out on at least one existing felony bond; in 2021, that number leaped to 19%. Of those cases, 968 accused felons allegedly committed four or more new crimes since being released on bond. One case investigated by the outlet found that the offender was out on 13 separate bonds.

Albuquerque Small Business Owner Shoots, Kills Would-Be Burglar Who Tunneled Through Wall

Many cities that cracked down on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/homelessness" target="_blank" rel="noopener">homelessness</a> have been hit with legal challenges over their new restrictions.
New York City, Dallas, and other cities that tried to aggressively address their homeless problem — and the drug, crime, and public nuisance issues that accompany it — are now <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/as-cities-get-tough-on-homelessness-legal-battles-follow-11673960273?mod=us_lead_story" target="_blank" rel="noopener">defending</a> their policies in court.
In New York City, civil rights groups are attempting to block Mayor Eric Adams&#8217; initiative to hospitalize homeless people who are severely mentally ill and appear to be a danger to themselves.
“If severe mental illness is causing someone to be unsheltered and a danger to themselves, we have a moral obligation to help them get the treatment and care they need,” Adams <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/11/29/nyc-to-involuntarily-commit-more-mentally-unstable-people/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> when he announced the plan.
In December, several civil rights groups <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/new-york-city-plan-to-involuntarily-hospitalize-some-mentally-ill-homeless-faces-legal-challenge-11670540243?mod=article_inline" target="_blank" rel="noopener">asked</a> a federal judge to block the policy, claiming it is unconstitutional and violates the Americans with Disabilities Act.
New York&#8217;s policy sometimes involves confiscating homeless people&#8217;s belongings as they are removed from public property and taken to a hospital. The city&#8217;s move comes amid concerns that the city&#8217;s homeless crisis is becoming more visible and spiraling out of control.
Also last month, Dallas was <a href="https://www.dallasobserver.com/news/dallas-sued-for-banning-panhandlers-from-standing-on-medians-15486363" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sued</a> over its October policy restricting people hanging around road medians, where homeless people often panhandle. City officials said the policy is for public safety because people can get hit by passing cars. However, the homeless people and their advocates who sued the city argued the policy violates their First Amendment rights.
Albuquerque was <a href="https://www.kxan.com/news/national-news/ap-new-mexico-city-sued-for-hounding-harassing-the-homeless/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sued</a> last month by homeless people and the ACLU of New Mexico for removing homeless encampments and arresting and fining people living on the street, allegedly violating their civil rights.
Similarly, Phoenix was <a href="https://www.12news.com/article/news/local/valley/aclu-sues-city-of-phoenix-stop-sweeps-homeless-camp/75-232de857-bdf8-411d-9e13-e8250fe89d70" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sued</a> last month by the ACLU of Arizona over sweeps of a huge homeless encampment downtown.
“Rather than confront its housing crisis head-on and invest in sustainable solutions to homelessness, the City is terrorizing the very people it should be helping,” the complaint reads.
In San Francisco, which has one of the nation&#8217;s worst homeless and drug crises, homeless people and their advocates sued the city for fining and arresting homeless people as a way to get them out of public spaces. They also complained that the city throws out homeless people&#8217;s tents and other belongings without enough warning.
Recently, the Ninth Circuit federal appeals court has limited what some West Coast cities with severe homeless crises can do to address the problem if they can&#8217;t offer appropriate shelter.
“It is a serious, serious, problem, probably the biggest crisis we’re facing right now, and I think these decisions are at the heart of what has gone wrong here,” attorney Theane Evangelis, who <a href="https://www.gibsondunn.com/lawyer/evangelis-theane/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">defended</a> an Oregon city&#8217;s homeless policy in the 9th Circuit, told <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/as-cities-get-tough-on-homelessness-legal-battles-follow-11673960273" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Wall Street Journal</a>.
“They’ve caused paralysis at a time when we need action,” Evangelis said.
A federal judge has temporarily banned San Francisco from taking those actions to combat the homeless issue, citing Ninth Circuit rulings.
Back in 2021, Austin was sued for not doing enough to address the city&#8217;s homeless problem. A group of Austin business owners and others <a href="https://www.kxan.com/news/local/austin/save-austin-now-business-owners-say-austin-is-failing-to-enforce-camping-ban-in-new-lawsuit/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sued</a> the city for not enforcing its public property camping ban.

Albuquerque police arrested a Muslim from Afghanistan in connection with at least two of the four Muslim men who have murdered in the area in recent months.
Police arrested 51-year-old Muhammad Syed and said that he would be charged with murdering two of the men and was a suspect in the murders of the other two. The first Muslim man was killed in November 2021 and the other three were all killed in the last two weeks.
The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/09/us/albuquerque-muslim-killings.html">reported</a> that Syed, a Sunni Muslim, might have targeted the men because they were Shiite Muslims and he was reportedly angry that his daughter married a Shiite Muslim.
President Joe Biden issued a statement at the start of the week on the matter, before the arrest was made, that suggested that the murders were hate crimes.
&#8220;I am angered and saddened by the horrific killings of four Muslim men in Albuquerque,&#8221; Biden said in a statement. &#8220;While we await a full investigation, my prayers are with the victims’ families, and my Administration stands strongly with the Muslim community.
&#8220;These hateful attacks have no place in America,&#8221; Biden added.
Syed, an immigrant from Afghanistan who has previously faced domestic violence charges, was taken into custody during a traffic stop more than 100 miles away from Albuquerque. Multiple firearms were recovered in the vehicle and home.
The Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/afghanistan-religion-pakistan-new-mexico-albuquerque-86dc44b0546834282ac9b171b37b32f7">reported</a> that the men who were killed were Naeem Hussain, 25, from Pakistan; Muhammad Afzaal Hussain, 27, from Pakistan; Aftab Hussein, 41, from Pakistan; and Mohammad Ahmadi, 62, from Afghanistan.
&#8220;As detectives prepared to search Syed’s home in Southeast Albuquerque on Monday, Syed drove from the residence in the Volkswagon [sic] Jetta that detectives believe was used in at least one of the murders,&#8221; the police department <a href="https://www.cabq.gov/police/news/apd-fbi-arrest-primary-suspect-in-murder-of-muslim-men">said</a> in a statement. &#8220;Detectives detained Syed and searched his home and the vehicle. They discovered additional evidence that further tied Syed to the murders.&#8221;
&#8220;Syed is being charged with two of the homicides – the July 26, 2022 murder of Aftab Hussein, and the Aug. 1, 2022 murder of Muhammad Afzaal Hussain. Detectives connected those homicides using bullet casings found at the scenes. The gun used in those shootings was discovered during the overnight search of his home,&#8221; the statement continued. &#8220;APD Chief Harold Medina said detectives will continue to work with the District Attorney’s Office on potential charges for the other two homicides – the Aug. 5, 2022, murder of Naeem Hussain, and the Nov. 7, 2021 murder of Mohammad Zaher Ahmadi.&#8221;

Police Arrest Afghan National, A Muslim, For Allegedly Murdering Muslims In New Mexico: Report

On Wednesday, the New Mexico state Public Education Department suspended a rural school board of a district with roughly 225 students after it countered Democrat Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s mask mandate for requiring children to wear masks in school.
“The five-member Floyd school board voted last week to make masks and social distancing optional and reaffirmed its decision in another vote Monday despite warnings from state officials that they could face suspension or other enforcement actions,” <a href="https://www.abqjournal.com/2416691/floyd-school-board-suspended-over-mask-vote.html">The Albuquerque Journal</a> reported, adding, “The district’s superintendent has been ordered to report directly to outgoing state Education Secretary Ryan Stewart.”
&#8220;The Floyd board voted July 26 at a special meeting to make masks and social distancing optional and to disregard state guidelines on indoor air quality, transportation, surveillance testing, and other COVID Safe Practices. Stewart sent board members a memo the next day, advising that their actions were inconsistent with state requirements,&#8221; the <a href="https://ladailypost.com/floyd-school-board-suspended-for-refusing-to-follow-health-orders-superintendent-reinstated-and-will-report-directly-to-public-education-secretary/">Los Alamos Daily Post</a> reported.
In late July, the New Mexico Public Education Department released new guidance on masks and protocols for schools. “All individuals in elementary schools regardless of vaccination status are required to wear a mask while: in a school building, on school transportation or at an indoor school-sponsored event,” <a href="https://www.kob.com/albuquerque-news/nmped-releases-guidance-on-masks-for-the-upcoming-school-year/6184034/">KOB</a> reported, adding, “Schools must identify the process for ensuring compliance with mask requirements, including posting signage in school facilities, announcing mask requirements at events and other necessary means for enforcement.”
Grisham stated, “In-person learning for New Mexico children is my top priority. And with safety guidelines and unobtrusive health requirements in place, it can happen safely – and for the well-being and growth of our children, it must happen. Steve Pearce, the chair of the Republican Party in New Mexico responded to the suspension by defending the school district: “The Republican Party stands shoulder to shoulder with the Floyd School Board and all other boards that refuse to accept these statewide orders from Santa Fe.” House Republican Leader Jim Townsend of Artesia echoed, “Instead of politicizing and headline-grabbing, I sure wish that the governor and PED would have implemented a serious plan to address the learning gap and the myriad of other issues that have been exacerbated during COVID.”
Republican Sen. David Gallegos of Eunice said of the Floyd board, “They represented the best interests of the children in their district. This gross violation of local authority is disrespectful to the students and families of Floyd and may even be a violation of New Mexico law.”

President Donald Trump and Attorney General William Barr announced on Wednesday that they were expanding Operation Legend into two additional cities that have been deemed to be &#8220;plagued by recent violence.&#8221;
&#8220;Operation Legend is a sustained, systematic and coordinated law enforcement initiative in which federal law enforcement agencies work in conjunction with state and local law enforcement officials to fight violent crime,&#8221; the DOJ <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/attorney-general-william-p-barr-joins-president-donald-j-trump-announce-expansion-operation">said</a> in a statement Wednesday. &#8220;Operation Legend is named after four-year-old LeGend Taliferro, who was shot and killed while he slept early in the morning of June 29 in Kansas City.&#8221;
The operation launched a couple of weeks ago in Kansas City and is now expanding into Chicago and Albuquerque, both of which have seen significant increases in violent crime. Barr directed the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, DEA, and ATF to significantly ramp up federal resources to the two Democrat-controlled cities.
The federal operation in Chicago will include:

<li>The Department of Justice will supplement state and local law enforcement agencies by sending over 100 federal investigators from the FBI, DEA, and ATF to the city.</li>
<li>The investigatory efforts will be advanced by more than 100 members of the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Task Force, which will direct violent fugitive apprehension operations within Chicago to identify wanted gang members, violent criminals, and firearms violators.</li>
<li>The Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) are also committing at least 100 agents, already stationed in Chicago, to Operation Legend. HSI agents will conduct investigations into gangs, narcotics traffickers, violent offenders, and firearms traffickers.</li>
<li>To further support the Chicago Police Department in reducing violent crime, ATF has deployed its national Crime Gun Intelligence Mobile Command Vehicle to assist local law enforcement with analysis of crime scenes and spent shell casings through the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN).</li>
<li>The Bureau of Justice Assistance will make available $3.5 million in funding to reimburse the Chicago Police Department and City of Chicago for the work of local law enforcement on the federal task forces supporting Operation Legend’s violent crime reduction efforts. The COPS Office has also made $9.375 million available to the Chicago Police Department to fund the hiring of 75 officers.</li>

The federal operation in Albuquerque will include:

<li>The Department of Justice will supplement state and local law enforcement agencies by sending more than 25 federal investigators from the FBI, DEA, and ATF to the city.</li>
<li>Up to 10 HSI agents will assist with the efforts in Albuquerque, as well.</li>
<li>The Department of Justice has also made available over $1.5 million in COPS Hiring Grants to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department to onboard five deputies and to support additional federal task force officers committed to violent crime reduction efforts. Additionally, the COPS Office has made $9.74 million available to the Albuquerque Police Department to fund the hiring of 40 officers.</li>
<li>Separately, the Bureau of Justice Assistance has made available $1.4 million to reimburse the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and Albuquerque Police Department for the work of local law enforcement on the federal task forces supporting Operation Legend’s violent crime reduction efforts.</li>

&#8220;The most basic responsibility of government is to protect the safety of our citizens,&#8221; Barr said. &#8220;Today, we have extended Operation Legend to Chicago and Albuquerque to protect the residents of those cities from senseless acts of deadly violence by targeting those involved in gang activity and those who use guns to commit violent crime.&#8221;
During a press conference Wednesday, Barr <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-operation-legend-combatting-violent-crime-american-cities/">said</a>, &#8220;The principal danger to the lives of our inner-city communities is violent crime. The leading cause of death for young, black males is homicide. Each year, approximately 7,500 black Americans are the victims of homicide. Every one of those lives matter.&#8221;
&#8220;The real measure of success of initiatives like Operation LeGend is the ability of communities to feel safe,&#8221; FBI Director Chris Wray said in a statement. &#8220;It’s not about the number of arrests; it’s about the ability of kids to be able to play outside of their homes, about families to be able to walk to and from work.&#8221;

On Monday, the mayor of Albuquerque, New Mexico, announced that some 911 calls would be addressed not by police, but rather unarmed social workers, as he said he would create a new department to address such situations.
Albuquerque Democrat Mayor Tim Keller stated, &#8220;We&#8217;ve placed more and more issues on the plates of officers who are not trained — despite their best efforts and despite some training — they&#8217;re not totally trained to be a social worker, or to be an addiction counselor, or to deal with things around child abuse when they&#8217;re just answering a call. We should have trained professionals do this, instead of folks with a gun and a badge.”
Keller said, “There is a huge portion of our community that doesn’t necessarily want two officers showing up when they call about a situation with respect to behavioral and mental health. So this is a new path forward for us that has been illuminated because of what we’ve learned during these times.&#8221; Keller obliquely referenced the recent protests across the nation, stating, &#8220;Look, there’s political will; there was not political will to make this huge of a step three weeks ago,” according to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/06/15/wake-calls-defund-police-albuquerque-creates-an-alternative-department/">The Washington Post.</a>
Albuquerque Police Chief Mike Geier told his staff that police officers were “relieved,” telling the Post, “This is the solution” to overburdened police departments around the country.
The new public safety department, called Albuquerque Community Safety, “would refocus millions of dollars through the budget process into a public health model with a civilian-based response,” according to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/albuquerque-social-workers-911-calls">Fox News</a>.
On Tuesday, six of the 15 members of the Los Angeles City Council signed a motion that would suggest using unarmed social workers instead of police to respond to nonviolent calls for service. “Councilman Herb Wesson, one of the authors, credited the efforts of Angelenos who took to the streets in recent weeks to call for the re-setting of priorities within the city budget, through a plan known as the ‘People’s Budget LA,’ a Black Lives Matter-led effort that calls for a drastic scaling back of the LAPD budget,” The <a href="https://www.dailynews.com/2020/06/16/2-la-council-members-want-social-workers-not-police-to-respond-to-non-violent-calls/">Los Angeles Daily News</a> reported.
Wesson added that the protesters “have asked us to re-imagine public safety in the 21st century, and that is what we are doing … These calls need to be directed to workers with specialized training who are better equipped to handle the situation.”
“Multiple cities across the country as well as the federal government are working to update policies and respond to the nationwide protests calling for change to law enforcement practices. Many have suggested the use of social workers and specialized medics as first responders to help prevent police calls from escalating and turning violent, and several other U.S. cities have implemented such changes,” <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/502856-albuquerque-will-use-social-workers-to-respond-to-certain-911-calls">The Hill</a> reported.
