On Wednesday, Lee Zeldin, the Environmental Protection Agency administrator, took a flamethrower to the sanctimony of a plethora of Democrats and their environmental absurdities.
During a hearing before the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, Rhode Island Democrat Senator Sheldon Whitehouse — a man who has spent years perfecting the art of the dramatic pause and the &#8220;dark money&#8221; conspiracy theory — launched into a vitriolic tirade. Whitehouse accused Zeldin of being a fossil fuel puppet, executing a &#8220;money pump&#8221; to enrich &#8220;Trump’s big corrupt donors&#8221; while supposedly driving up electricity bills.
Whitehouse, leaning heavily into the &#8220;climate reckoning&#8221; trope, claimed that &#8220;four-year-olds know&#8221; wind is cheaper than gas and hyperventilated, “All the climate denial fraud that you help propagate. All the corrupt, dark money your polluter bosses sluiced through this building. None of that will stand against nature&#8217;s reckoning.”
Zeldin, however, was not interested in being lectured by a man whose commitment to &#8220;diversity&#8221; apparently ends at the gates of an all-white country club.
Zeldin began by dismantling the idea that disagreement equals &#8220;villainy,&#8221; pointing out that the radical Left’s &#8220;science&#8221; is often just the most pessimistic 2009-era assumptions masquerading as fact. He then turned the tables on the &#8220;corruption&#8221; narrative, highlighting the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF) — a multi-billion-dollar pot of taxpayer gold that seems to find its way into very specific pockets.
But the real knockout blow came when Zeldin addressed Whitehouse’s moral posturing directly. Noting their twenty-year acquaintance, Zeldin signaled he was done with the hypocrisy.
&#8220;I’m not going to take morality lessons from people who join all-white country clubs,&#8221; Zeldin shot back, a direct reference to Whitehouse’s long-standing membership in Newport’s exclusive Bailey’s Beach Club. Despite Whitehouse’s 2006 campaign promise to quit the club due to its lack of diversity, the Senator <a href="https://nypost.com/2021/06/21/sheldon-whitehouse-under-fire-for-membership-at-all-white-club/">remained</a> a member of the elite, non-diverse enclave for years, dismissing the exclusion as a &#8220;long tradition in Rhode Island.&#8221;
Zeldin didn&#8217;t stop at the hearing room. He took to X to dub the Senator &#8220;Sheldon WhiteClub&#8221; and went after the broader &#8220;lying cabal&#8221; of climate alarmists, writing, “I told Senator Sheldon WhiteClub today that I won’t be listening to or caring about any of his lessons on morality knowing that he joined an all-white Rhode Island Country Club. I’m also done with the likes of AOC, Al Gore, John Kerry, and the rest of the lying cabal that make stupid climate predictions, plunder tens of billions of tax dollars, enrich their well-connected allies, and are committed to strangulating out of existence entire sectors of our economy.”
Zeldin gleefully pointed out that AOC’s 2019 &#8220;12 years left&#8221; clock has less than five years remaining, and mocked Al Gore for pivoting to &#8220;global freezing&#8221; after his 2006 prediction that Mt. Kilimanjaro would be snow-free &#8220;within the decade&#8221; turned out to be a total bust. (There is, in fact, still snow on Kilimanjaro).

Prominent Democrats from across the country were campaigning for Tennessee Democrat Aftyn Behn on Monday night as the party hopes to pull off a &#8220;miracle&#8221; in Tuesday&#8217;s special election.
Behn, running against Republican Matt Van Epps for Tennessee&#8217;s 7th Congressional district seat, was joined on a Zoom call by some of the Left&#8217;s biggest names, including former vice president Al Gore, and far-left congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Pramila Jayapal. The virtual rally was the final event of Behn&#8217;s special election campaign and was attended by around 1,200 people, many of whom appeared to be hopping on Zoom from out of state based on their comments in the video call&#8217;s chat.
Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged that it would take a &#8220;miracle&#8221; for Democrats to turn the Tennessee district blue, but added that Behn&#8217;s position in the race has shown that &#8220;miracles still happen.&#8221; The democratic socialist from New York urged Democrats in Tennessee to remain hopeful that politicians like Behn can successfully push leftist policies in deep red states as the Democratic Party looks ahead to the pivotal 2026 midterm elections.
Behn is hoping to win the deep red district despite pushing leftist policies in the past, including voicing support for abolishing police departments and saying that she was &#8220;fearful&#8221; for &#8220;trans communities&#8221; after a trans-identifying shooter killed three Christian schoolchildren and three staff members in Nashville.
Behn&#8217;s Republican opponent was rarely mentioned during the rally, as the Democratic speakers focused much of their attention on attacking President Donald Trump and his administration. Democrats are positioning the Tennessee special election as a referendum on Trump&#8217;s agenda, as the party is optimistic that Behn is within striking distance in a district that went for Trump by 22 points in 2024.

The virtual rally got off to a bumpy start when Gore was introduced by Behn&#8217;s campaign manager, with the former vice president nowhere to be seen. After a few quiet and awkward moments, Gore&#8217;s face appeared on screen and he was introduced for a second time. Gore kicked off the rally by doubling down on that focus and painting the Trump White House as one of the most evil and corrupt administration&#8217;s in U.S. history.
Earlier on Monday, big name Republicans also gathered in the district to push Van Epps as the GOP and Trump emphasize the importance of the special election. Republicans and Democrats have poured millions of dollars into the special House race, with Behn’s campaign raising over $1 million between October 1 and November 12, according to campaign finance records. In that same timeframe, Van Epps raised $591,000, but the Republican candidate is also getting a big boost from Trump-aligned outside groups that have spent over a million dollars on advertisements.
Over 84,000 voters cast their ballots during the early voting period, which lasted from November 12-26, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=1169221962004705&amp;set=pcb.1169223325337902">according</a> to the Tennessee Secretary of State. A large chunk of Republicans and Democrats are still expected to head to the polls on Tuesday morning. Polling results from Emerson College and The Hill <a href="https://www.wsmv.com/2025/12/01/poll-shows-republican-van-epps-holding-slight-lead-over-democrat-behn-tennessees-special-congressional-race/">released</a> on Monday showed Van Epps with just a 2-point edge on Behn.

Big-Name Dems Make Final Pitch For Aftyn Behn, Hope For Tuesday ‘Miracle’ In Tennessee

Today&#8217;s Democrats, led by Kamala Harris, Barack Obama and Joe Biden, are not just tiptoeing around the edges of censorship; they&#8217;re creating an Orwellian nightmare where the state is being called upon to regulate speech and to determine what is fit to be heard in the public square.
The Media Research Center took a stroll down <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/every-21st-century-democratic-presidential-nominee-supports-restricting-free-speech" target="_blank" rel="noopener">memory lane</a> to measure the seismic shift in attitudes toward the First Amendment for Harris and the other Democratic nominees of the 21st century, including Biden, Hillary Clinton, Obama, John Kerry and Al Gore.
According to the MRC study, each of these six candidates previously stood for free speech rights. Now, they claim that constitutionally protected speech is a threat to democracy. Their tortuous logic is inexplicable, but their previous quotes have not yet been whitewashed by the Left’s ever-faithful tech behemoth, Google.
In 2006, Gore <a href="https://youtu.be/ZNuEKePNCgw?si=p-UifGYw5A7Fzl9c&amp;t=2643" target="_blank" rel="noopener">scolded</a> the Bush administration for allegedly trying to “silence dissenting views” by censoring information “inconsistent with its stated ideological goals.” Fast forward to 2023, and Gore <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/technology/4344366-al-gore-calls-social-media-algorithms-digital-ar-15s/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">suggests</a> social media algorithms should be “banned,” calling them the “digital equivalent of AR-15s.”
In 2011, Clinton <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acDcUQoeFxY">vowed</a> to protect free speech &#8220;with the force of law.&#8221; But just last month, <a href="https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/tim-graham/2024/09/17/hillary-maddow-americans-who-boost-trump-propaganda-are-criminals" target="_blank" rel="noopener">she said</a> that Americans should be “criminally charged” for spreading what she dubbed “propaganda.” She later warned, “[i]f they don’t moderate and monitor the content, we lose total control.”
In 2015, Obama <a href="https://youtu.be/mi5da2AhDCY?si=o22sDubaS4hTFrSq&amp;t=190" target="_blank" rel="noopener">affirmed</a> that government propaganda “runs contrary to everything we believe.” Yet, in <a href="https://archive.is/k29vX#selection-2011.0-2014.0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2022</a>, Obama called on Americans to “pick a side” regarding whether social media companies should be forced to censor Americans.
In 2015, Kerry rebuked censorship, affirming that “freedom must win out over censorship.” A year earlier, he <a href="https://youtu.be/X2JrqxACZp8?si=siES2GzodJEg2GRg&amp;t=304" target="_blank" rel="noopener">condemned</a> the very acts committed by his own party today: “Imagine if I couldn&#8217;t talk to you today simply because my government had shut down or censored the internet.” But now Kerry unashamedly attacks the First Amendment “as a major block.”
In 2017, Biden passionately <a href="https://youtu.be/fe8iSYHOg5A?si=6HlO0KKTuQihJ4Wo&amp;t=4555" target="_blank" rel="noopener">defended</a> free speech rights for all: “[W]e hurt ourselves badly when we don&#8217;t allow the speech to take place. … The First Amendment is one of the defining features of who we are in the Bill of Rights. And to shut it down in the name of what is appropriate is simply wrong.” In that same year, Harris similarly tweeted, “The free and open internet is a cornerstone of our society and must be protected at all costs.”
But like their predecessors, Biden and Harris have flip-flopped, deciding instead that the best way to combat ideas they dislike is not through debate, but through deletion. In the guise of combatting mis- and dis-information, they created the largest censorship regime in U.S. history, spanning 10 federal departments and six additional regulatory agencies.
For example, the State and Homeland Security Departments have partnered repeatedly to censor conservatives in the media. The Pentagon has also used our tax dollars to bludgeon advertisers, cajoling them not to work with conservative media outlets.
Independent agencies are at it, too. The Federal Communications Commission is punishing free-speech advocate Elon Musk while rewarding anti-free speech zealot George Soros. And the National Science Foundation is competing with the Energy Department to be the wizard behind the censorship curtain.
This isn&#8217;t about mis-information; it&#8217;s about power. Democratic leaders have traded the mantle of freedom for the chains of control, embracing the tech titans as partners and enforcers of their narrative. Once heralded as the new public square, social media platforms have become a digital dungeon where speech is policed not by law, but by algorithm.

While elites in the Democratic Party play the role of speech censors, conservatives have joined with traditional Democrats in a coalition to protect speech rights. This coalition is led mostly by former Democrats, including Donald Trump, Elon Musk and two former presidential candidates, Robert F. Kennedy and Tulsi Gabbard.
Trump’s running mate JD Vance <a href="https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/free-speech/tom-olohan/2024/10/02/vp-debate-cbs-jd-vance-denounces-true-threat-democracy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">articulated</a> the correct perspective on speech in the vice presidential debate: “I believe we actually do have a threat to democracy in this country, but unfortunately, it&#8217;s not the threat to democracy that Kamala Harris and Tim Walz want to talk about: It is the threat of censorship.”
Vance is sounding a wake-up call that resonates like the siren many of us heard as school children during nuclear-war fallout drills. We&#8217;re not just at risk of losing an argument; we&#8217;re at risk of losing America.
The next president of the United States will take the oath of office, swearing to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” The media must do their job and ask each of the candidates whether they can take this oath, without snickering and crossing fingers.

Since 2020, every candidate the Democratic Party has nominated for president since 2000 has actively backed restrictions on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/free-speech" target="_blank" rel="noopener">free speech</a> online, according to a new analysis from the Media Research Center shared with The Daily Wire. 
“Since the 2020 election cycle, no less than seven of the most recent 10 presidential nominees have called for censorship and/or government regulation of political speech,” MRC researcher Luis Cornelio found wrote in his analysis.
MRC Free Speech For America analyzed the comments and positions of every presidential candidate since 2000. The group found that every Democrat — and just one Republican — who ran for office in that time frame has backed some kind of restriction on speech since 2020, whether banning &#8220;misinformation&#8221; or pushing for the government to crack down on free expression.
That includes former President Barack Obama, President Joe Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris, the last of whom has advocated censorship for years. Harris has <a href="https://x.com/EndWokeness/status/1829651058269806658" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pushed</a> for social media companies to remove posts from former President Donald Trump and demanded more government oversight and regulation for social media companies. 
“They are directly speaking to millions and millions of people without any level of oversight or regulation, and that has to stop,” Harris told CNN in 2019. 
The report found that former President Donald Trump had taken steps to promote free speech, citing his efforts in 2020 to define Section 230 — a provision that largely gives tech companies immunity for what third parties allow on their platforms — in a way that protected the First Amendment.
Mitt Romney, who ran for president in 2012, is the only Republican the MRC found to have “voiced support for censorship and against the American principles of free speech online.” 
The Biden-Harris administration <a href="https://mrcfreespeechamerica.org/blogs/free-speech/gabriela-pariseau-christian-baldwin/2024/06/25/mrc-free-speech-america-exposes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">used</a> several federal agencies to censor speech related to the COVID-19 vaccine, MRC previously documented. This came as Biden claimed that Facebook was “killing people” by allowing posts critical of the COVID vaccine.
“They’re killing people — I mean they’re really, look, the only pandemic we have is among the unvaccinated,” Biden <a href="https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/tim-graham/2021/07/17/networks-promote-biden-claiming-facebook-killing-people-covid">said</a> on July 16, 2021. “And they’re killing people.”
Hillary Clinton, who has long blamed her 2016 loss to Trump on so-called Russian disinformation, has proposed arresting Americans for spreading “propaganda.” 
“I think there are Americans who are engaged in this kind of propaganda, and whether they should be civilly or even in some cases, criminally charged is something that would be a better deterrence,” Clinton <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxrngjBER3E">said</a> on MSNBC last month.
Earlier this month, Clinton urged for social media companies to “moderate” posts, <a href="https://mrcfreespeechamerica.org/blogs/free-speech/donald-perkins/2024/10/07/hillary-clinton-pushes-censorship-expresses-fear-losing">saying</a> on CNN that if “they don’t moderate and monitor content, we lose total control.”
“We should be, in my view, appealing something called Section 230, which gave platforms on the internet immunity because they were thought to be pass-throughs that they shouldn’t be judged for the content that is posted—but we now know that was an overly simple view,” she said.
Obama <a href="https://archive.is/k29vX">said</a> back on April 21, 2022 that protecting “democracy” meant more government regulations for online speech.
“Each of us, whether we work at a tech company or consume social media, whether we are a parent, a legislator, an advertiser on one of these platforms, now’s the time to pick a side,” Obama said at Stanford&#8217;s Cyber Policy Center. “We have a choice right now. Do we allow our democracy to wither or do we make it better?”

Last month, John Kerry, who lost the White House to George W. Bush in 2004, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/john-kerry-if-democrats-win-we-can-change-first-amendment-to-fight-disinformation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">asserted</a> that the First Amendment was a major impediment to fighting alleged online misinformation.
“But look, if people only go to one source, and the source they go to is sick, and, you know, has an agenda, and they’re putting out disinformation, our First Amendment stands as a major block to be able to just, you know, hammer it out of existence,” he said during a World Economic Forum meeting.
Vice President Al Gore, who has made a fortune pushing fear about climate change, compared social media algorithms to AR-15 rifles in December 2023 and called for them to be banned if they lead people in a certain direction.
“If you have social media that is dominated by algorithms that pull people down these rabbit holes that are a bit like pitcher plants, these algorithms, they are the digital equivalent of AR-15s,” Gore said. “They ought to be banned, they really ought to be banned. It’s an abuse of the public forum.”
Romney, the only Republican on the list, was included because of comments he made during a congressional hearing in July 2023 where he seemed to endorse federal government employees pressuring tech companies to restrict certain posts.
“Employees of the federal government have First Amendment rights, too,” Romney said. “Censorship is when the government shuts something off. This is arguing to try to convince somebody else to shut it off and that’s the right people have whether they’re in government or outside of government.”

Former Vice President Al Gore suggested during an interview over the weekend that a billion people will become &#8220;climate refugees&#8221; if the world does not adopt the political Left&#8217;s climate agenda.
Gore made the prediction during a Sunday interview on CNN&#8217;s &#8220;State of the Union&#8221; with host Jake Tapper.
&#8220;We still have the ability to seize control of our destiny,&#8221; he said. &#8220;If we stop adding to the overburden of these greenhouse gas pollutants in the sky, if we reach what they call true net zero and stop adding to the heat-trapping capacity up there, the temperatures will stop going up right away. And if we stay at true net zero, half of the human-caused greenhouse pollution will fall out of the atmosphere in as little as 25 to 30 years.&#8221;

&#8220;I also have to ask you, sir, because you are a Harvard alum,&#8221; Tapper said. &#8220;The presidents of Harvard, Penn, and MIT were before Congress this past week, and they were asked whether or not it &#8212; explicitly calling for the genocide of Jews on their campus would constitute harassment, and they seemed to struggle with that, although the presidents of Penn and Harvard issued clarifying statements.&#8221;
&#8220;And I was wondering what your reaction to it, as somebody who has been a strong supporter of the Jewish community, a strong supporter of Israel, and also, as I noted, a proud Harvard alum,&#8221; Tapper said.

Gore compared the so-called &#8220;rabbit holes&#8221; to carnivorous pitcher plants that lure prey to come inside — and once inside, they can&#8217;t get back out.
&#8220;If you have social media that is dominated by algorithms that pull people down these rabbit holes that are a bit like pitcher plants,&#8221; Gore began. &#8220;These algorithms, they are the digital equivalent of AR-15s, they ought to be banned – they really ought to be banned.&#8221;
&#8220;It&#8217;s an abuse of the public forum,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;But when these — when people are pulled down these rabbit holes — you know what&#8217;s at the bottom of the rabbit hole, that&#8217;s where the echo chamber is. As the annual globalist confab staggered to a conclusion in Davos, the forum&#8217;s 52-year arc was also mercifully nearing an end. It began in 1971 as a wildly ambitious kook cult led by a 30-year-old economist who was equal parts Bond villain and L. Ron Hubbard. No one paid much attention for decades, but eventually rich, famous, and powerful people started showing up. That’s when conservatives raised the alarm and warned the world that Klaus Schwab and his vacant-eyed acolytes appeared bent on world domination. As usual, the leftist media’s response was something like, &#8220;You guys are crazy conspiracy theorists, and anyway, it’s a good thing.&#8221;
In 2023, with much of the world engulfed by debt, inflation, crisis-level immigration, and the looming threat of World War III, no one wants to hear what these pompous quarter-wits in propeller beanies have to say about how the rest of us should live. Even Europe’s unofficial energy czar, Greta Thunberg, only showed up this year <a href="https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/davos-2023-keep-it-in-the-ground-greta-thunberg-tells-protest-at-end-of-wef/ar-AA16ytTz" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to heckle</a> the swells.
Emissions from this year’s collection of aging C-list gasbags included the usual dire warnings about a dying planet and the neo-spiritual demand for repentance from the developed world. With a dystopian hellscape just around the corner, the answer, as always, is for successful countries to return to the Stone Age while handing all their money over to unelected globalists who promise to distribute it to the noble savages.
If you eat meat, own a car, believe in borders, don’t want to be tracked, or simply want to be left alone, you’re the problem. The message was not new, but now it suddenly sounds more tired than scary. Maybe it’s because what passed for star power at this year’s meeting looked more like a reboot of “Cocoon,” or “Grumpy Old Men.”

Why, it seems like only yesterday that Gore was fending off a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/two-more-women-accuse-al-gore-of-assault-2010-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">slew of complaints from masseuses</a>, yet miraculously managed to sidestep MeToo cancellation and make <a href="https://moneyinc.com/al-gore-net-worth/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hundreds of millions of dollars</a> off his “save the planet” grift.
Fellow failed Democrat presidential candidate John Kerry, 79, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/at-davos-john-kerry-praises-select-group-of-people-for-saving-the-planet-but-says-they-need-money-money-money" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pronounced himself an “extraterrestrial&#8221;</a> who had been “touched” by someone or something which conferred upon him the power to save the planet. Synonymous with insufferable, Kerry once famously said that flying by private jet “is the only choice for somebody like me.” You too can own your own Gulfstream, if you marry the rich widow of your former Senate colleague.
Tony Blair, 69, the former British prime minister who is rumored to be Schwab’s potential successor, was heard calling for a “digital infrastructure” so “we can know who is vaccinated and who is not.” Memo to Blair: Not even those annoying people with “In this house …” yard signs and “Co-Exist” bumper stickers want this anymore.
The WEF&#8217;s twin sugar daddies didn’t even bother to attend this year. <a href="https://radaronline.com/p/bill-gates-dodges-questions-jeffrey-epstein-meetings-online-qa-session/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jeffrey Epstein’s old wingman, Bill Gates</a>, was a no-show, and George Soros was either unwilling or unable to leave the crypt to come bask in the genuflections of adoring minions.
There are even signs a mutiny could be building against Schwab. <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/jan/18/mutiny-erupts-among-wef-staff-over-role-of-mr-davos-klaus-schwab" target="_blank" rel="noopener">According to The Guardian</a>, a group of current and former forum members signed on to a report calling the founder “completely unaccountable to anyone inside and outside the organization.”
“Klaus has been at the helm of the WEF for 52 years,” the group charged. “When he was born, 122 of the 195 states in the world right now did not even exist.”
Far more useful advice for protecting mankind and the planet came from <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-british-satirists-scathing-indictment-of-woke-culture-global-warming-hysteria-viewed-5m-times" target="_blank" rel="noopener">British comedian Konstantin Kisin</a>, whose address at a recent Oxford Union debate went viral and reached far more eyes and ears than any dopey Davos decree. The gist: Innovation, not authoritarianism, is humanity’s only hope. People in the world’s poorest and most populous countries are not going to stop trying to stay warm and feed their children just to win over a delusional pack of patronizing progressives.
“You are not going to get these people to stay poor,” Kisin said. “You’re not even going to get them to not want to be richer. And so I put it to you ladies and gentlemen, there is only one thing we can do in this country to stop climate change, and that is to make scientific and technological breakthroughs that will create the clean energy that is not only clean, but also cheaper.”
If Kisin wants to start a club and hold annual meetings in the Swiss Alps to discuss how to take over the world, I’m in. Who knows? It might become a real thing in 50 years.

The former Democratic presidential candidate said in an impassioned <a href="https://www.weforum.org/events/world-economic-forum-annual-meeting-2023/sessions/leading-the-charge-through-earths-new-normal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">jeremiad</a> at the conference that carbon emissions are raising the temperature of the troposphere, the part of the atmosphere that contains oxygen, to an unsustainable degree. He claimed that increased emissions are linked to extreme weather events and the apparent boiling of the oceans.
“We’re still putting 162 million tons into it every single day, and the accumulated amount is now trapping as much extra heat as would be released by 600,000 Hiroshima-class atomic bombs exploding every single day on the Earth,” he remarked. “That’s what’s boiling the oceans, creating these atmospheric rivers, and the rain bombs, and sucking the moisture out of the land, and creating the droughts, and melting the ice, and raising the sea level, and causing these waves of climate refugees predicted to reach one billion in this century.”
Gore also repeated his <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-may-try-to-fire-world-bank-president-for-not-pushing-climate-policy-enough-possible-replacement-chimes-in-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">assertion</a> that World Bank President David Malpass, an appointee of former President Donald Trump, is a “climate denier” who pursues environmental policies with insufficient zeal. The accusation last year followed speculation that President Joe Biden would select Gore to serve as the next leader of the international financial institution.
“We are not winning. The crisis is still getting worse faster than we are deploying these solutions, and we need to make changes quickly,” Gore continued. “Emissions are still going up. Despite the backlash, Vanguard asserted that investors should be worried about financial risks posed by the environment. “Climate change, and the ongoing global response, will have far-reaching economic consequences for companies, financial markets, and investors, presenting a clear example of a material and multifaceted financial risk,” the company’s statement continued. “Vanguard has been taking steps to understand and attend to this risk to investors’ returns, including through our engagements with portfolio companies, policymakers, and broader industry efforts.”
Gore, who narrowly lost the 2000 election to former President George W. <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/biden-administration" target="_blank" rel="noopener">White House</a> officials have considered trying to get World Bank President David Malpass fired for not pursuing <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/climate-change" target="_blank" rel="noopener">climate change</a> policies with sufficient zeal, according to a Friday <a href="https://www.axios.com/2022/09/23/world-bank-malpass-climate-biden">report</a> from Axios.
Malpass, who formerly served as under secretary of the Treasury for international affairs under former President Donald Trump, was <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/environment/world-banks-malpass-faces-calls-resign-after-climate-change-doubts-2022-09-21/">asked</a> on Tuesday whether he affirms that the &#8220;manmade burning of fossil fuels is rapidly and dangerously warming the planet.&#8221; Malpass reportedly said: &#8220;I don&#8217;t even know. I&#8217;m not a scientist.&#8221;
People familiar with the matter told Axios that the Biden administration has long viewed Malpass with suspicion and confirmed that officials have considered replacing him — although the process for triggering a leadership change at the international financial institution would likely be complicated.
The United States is the largest shareholder in the World Bank, which provides loans and grants to the governments of developing nations for capital projects, and the president typically nominates the organization’s leader. Malpass, who was nominated by Trump in 2019, is slated to complete his five-year term in 2024.
Biden could nominate former Vice President Al Gore or Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry. A spokesperson for Gore told Axios that he “strongly believes that there needs to be new leadership at the World Bank, but has no intention of pursuing the role himself and would not accept it if offered.&#8221;
Malpass reacted to the notion that he is a climate change “denier” — a charge levied by Gore and other officials — by rejecting the label outright. “I don’t know the political motivations behind that,” he said during an <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/22/world/world-bank-david-malpass-climate-change-intl-hnk/index.html">interview</a> with CNN. “It’s clear that greenhouse gas emissions are coming from manmade sources, including fossil fuels, methane, agricultural uses and industrial uses. And so we’re working hard to change that.”
Biden has pushed green energy policies while <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-administration-severely-cuts-back-on-oil-and-gas-leases">leasing less federal land</a> for oil drilling than any of his predecessors since the end of World War II. At the beginning of his tenure, Biden also <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/keystone-pipeline-dead-killed-by-biden-thousands-of-jobs-lost">nixed expansions</a> to the Keystone XL pipeline project over environmental concerns. Last month, he signed the $740 billion Inflation Reduction Act, which includes $369 billion in programs meant to accelerate a transition to renewable energy.
A <a href="https://www.schumer.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/just-back-from-dc-schumer-outlines-historic-passage-of-inflation-reduction-act-and-its-impact-on-upstate-new-york-from-reducing-rx-costs-for-over-37m-ny-ers-lowering-utility-bills-closing-tax-loopholes-for-big-corps-fighting-climate-crisis-creating-new-jobs-rebuilding-american-manufacturing_more--">fact sheet</a> from the office of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) claimed that the law will create 9 million jobs across the United States while bringing “manufacturing of clean technology like solar panels, wind turbines, batteries, and much more back to America.” Among other items, the law funds $160 billion in clean electricity tax credits, $43 billion in production tax credits, and $40 billion in tax credits to make buildings more energy efficient.
Top administration officials, including Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/energy-secretary-lays-out-the-only-way-to-avoid-high-gas-prices-and-its-not-producing-more-oil">argued</a> that “the only way” out of “boom-and-bust cycles” in energy prices is “deploying clean energy.”
“The real truth is that as long as our nation remains overly reliant on oil and fossil fuels, we will feel these price shocks again,” Granholm said at a June press briefing. “This is not going to be the last time. The next time there’s a war, the next time there’s a pandemic or another hurricane, these extreme weather events we are experiencing — they will impact the access that we have to fossil fuels.”
