Adam Sandler got everyone’s attention when he dropped the official trailer for “Happy Gilmore 2” nearly 30 years since the original movie hit the big screen.
In a viral post on Tuesday on <a href="https://x.com/AdamSandler/status/1901966979264852389">X</a>, the 58-year-old actor wrote, “Hope you all have fun and thanks for all the great times.”
His post included a one-minute-plus clip giving fans a sneak peak at what they could expect when the sequel hits Netflix July 25, when he reprises the role of the unlikely golfer Happy Gilmore.
In the trailer, we see his character clearly hesitant about facing off against a handful of PGA greats, saying he “hasn’t swung a club in years.” However, he finally decides to find a “new happy place” and head back to the golf course. And, as expected, all kinds of chaos is about to happen.

Fans have been waiting a long time for a sequel to Sandler’s hilarious 1996 golf comedy, in which he played a hockey player turned golfer to save his grandmother’s home.
Several original movie stars are returning for the sequel, including Christopher McDonald as rival golfer Shooter McGavin, and Julie Bowen, who plays Gilmore’s love interest.
The news comes after Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce dropped a teaser trailer in December in which he made a brief appearance in Sandler’s highly-anticipated “Happy Gilmore 2.”
In the clip Kelce posted to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/DEP410wIt46/?igsh=NjZiM2M3MzIxNA%3D%3D">Instagram</a>, the Chiefs star told Sandler’s character in the trailer, “It’s great to see you back, Mr. Gilmore!”

Kelce’s involvement in the film comes after the Chiefs tight end made it clear on a past episode of his &#8220;New Heights&#8221; podcast that he was a &#8220;Happy Gilmore&#8221; fan, and if there were a sequel in the works, he <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ae1J82fM23Q">would love to be part of it</a>.
Sandler later appeared on the Kelce brothers’ podcast and hinted at the role the Chiefs star player would have in the movie.
“Travis, we’re gonna have fun because the scene you’re doing is with so many great golfers it’s going to be amazing. You’re going to be funny as hell,” the famed actor said, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Culture/adam-sandler-travis-kelce-talk-athletes-happy-gilmore/story?id=113221086">ABC News</a> noted.

In a clip Kelce posted to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/DEP410wIt46/?igsh=NjZiM2M3MzIxNA%3D%3D">Instagram</a> on Tuesday, the Kansas City Chiefs star made a brief appearance in the trailer for the new Netflix movie, telling Sandler’s character, &#8220;It’s great to see you back, Mr. Gilmore!”
He captioned the post, “It’s great to see you back in 2025, Mr. Gilmore! Wishing everyone a HAPPY New Year with HAPPY GILMORE 2, coming to<a href="https://www.instagram.com/netflix/"> @netflix</a> in the new year.”
There were several reactions to the clip, including one message from fellow Chiefs star QB Patrick Mahomes, who wrote, “Let’s Go,” along with a fire emoji.
One comment from the official account for the Kelce brothers&#8217; “New Heights Show” podcast read, “Uh oh, Travvy learned how to putt,” along with a crying laughing face emoji.

Actor, producer, and writer Allen Covert says he spent his “entire adult life” working at Happy Madison, the Adam Sandler shingle that gave us “Happy Gilmore,” “Grown Ups” and more comic hits.
“It’s the only real job I’ve ever had,” said Covert.
Now, following his 60th birthday, he’s decided it’s time to branch out on his own. Covert has a new Hollywood goal after breaking free from Happy Madison – bring back the bawdy comedy.
Covert’s expansive credits include “Little Nicky,” “The Wrong Missy,” “Murder Mystery,” “Hubie Halloween” along with his many comic cameos in Sandler smashes like &#8220;The Wedding Singer,&#8221; “Happy Gilmore,” and “The Waterboy.”

Covert’s comedy resume speaks for itself, but he also has a focus group of four to fall back on. His children.
“They watch old comedies. They literally say to me, ‘Why don’t they make movies like this anymore?’” he said.
They can’t blame Daddy for the comedy drought. Even though fans tell him how much they love his comedies, Covert says, “Not one studio is making one right now. They’re not making comedy, period.”
It’s an exaggeration, but only a slight one. Big-screen comedies are on the decline, with most of the funny stuff heading straight to streaming. Think this year’s “Ricky Stanicky” (Prime Video) or the upcoming “Dear Santa” (Paramount+).

Covert grew up on bawdy teen comedies like “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.” Their rebellious shtick made Covert and his pals howl. It also gave them a common cultural touchpoint. Now, the veteran film producer laments that Gen Zers lack a similar release valve.
“My daughter just graduated high school. [Her generation] hasn’t had a single comedy that’s theirs. Four years of high school. Not one movie they can look back on and go, ‘Remember when we all saw, ‘Can’t Hardly Wait?’ Now, they get ‘Kissing Booth.’”
The latter is a Netflix original. Covert has no problem with the streaming giant, having worked repeatedly with the platform in recent years. He says nothing can replace the theatrical experience.
“There’s something very bonding about sitting in a room with strangers and laughing your a**es off,” he said. “It’s different than sitting at home with three of your friends.”

The veteran comedy producer (“Grown Ups”) and occasional star (“Grandma’s Boy”) wants to do something about it.
So, where did all the comedies go? Covert points the finger at several culprits, including the invincible Iron Man.
“IP and big-budget blockbusters,” he said. “Everyone is like, we want Marvel films where we can create our universe and every movie makes $500 million to a billion dollars,” he said. “Comedies fell by the wayside at studios.”
The Hollywood groupthink stifles genres that fall out of favor, or as he put it, a “small group of people who pick what gets bought.”
Another reason for the big screen comedy vacuum is obvious to most cultural observers. The new woke rules prevent certain jokes and topics from making the final cut.
“That’s 1,000 percent true,” Covert said without hesitation.

That explains why some comedy actors, like <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/celebrities/2024/09/12/will-ferrell-snl-drag-janet-reno/75192512007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Will Ferrell</a> and <a href="https://variety.com/2019/film/festivals/berlin-film-festival-jonah-hill-wants-to-challenge-traditional-masculinity-1203134534/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jonah Hill</a>, have apologized for their jokes in recent years.
“If you made a really horrible joke in the past that’s blatantly racist and discriminatory everyone should apologize for that,” he said. “If you made a comedy that’s maybe gotten a little less palatable to the community over time, who cares? I’ll never apologize for a joke.”
“If you do something wrong you get your ass out there and apologize,” he added.
Covert is that rare Hollywood conservative, but he’s been able to produce, write, and co-star in films for years without punishment.
“I’ve never experienced any type of, ‘He’s a conservative. We can’t work with him.’ I was never the lead guy … I was part of a company that was hugely successful,” he said of Happy Madison and his longtime collaborator, Sandler. “My experience in Hollywood as a conservative is probably different than others.”

Covert has several scripts in near-ready shape for his new endeavor, but he’s still meeting some resistance behind the scenes.
“’What’s the hook?,’ they ask. ‘It’s kids having fun in high school. That’s the hook,” he said. “Kids need this … kids are depressed and anxious. Everyone’s telling them the world’s ending. I wanna tell kids, ‘Have fun … worry about the world ending when you’re 25.”
He still faces an uphill battle despite his comedy resume.
“A lot of people are ready for this. I just don’t think the people in charge are right now,” he said, noting the swirling winds of change in Hollywood haven’t helped. “It’s such a confusing upheaval time in the business. I don’t think they’re able to concentrate on what people wanna see.”
Covert, whose cult hit “Grandma’s Boy” has him recognized in places as far away as South Africa, said he’s ready to meet the pent-up demand for the next great teen comedy.
“I make raw, crazy movies. I make sweet movies — whatever kind of movie needs to be made.”

Actress Julie Bowen discussed her time on set and what fans can expect from the highly anticipated “Happy Gilmore” sequel from <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/adam-sandler">Adam Sandler</a>.
Bowen was also part of the first film and said she’s been surprised at the amount of enthusiasm from fans. The first “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/movies">Happy Gilmore</a>” was released in 1996. 
She told Collider during a recently published <a href="https://collider.com/happy-gilmore-2-julie-bowen-update/">interview</a> that she didn’t expect the sequel to happen. Bowen also said, “I didn’t realize how many people were happy about it. We’re shooting, obviously, on golf courses. I can’t spoil anything. I can’t spoil all the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/entertainment">guest stars</a> or cameos in it. I can say that we’re shooting on golf courses with hundreds of extras, and they’re all so excited. I thought, &#8216;Oh, wow, I didn’t know everybody was waiting for this.&#8217; But I’m getting a sense of that now.&#8221;
The 54-year-old &#8220;Modern Family&#8221; star also revealed that she would be de-aged for some flashback scenes in the film.

“It is really weird,” she told the outlet. “This is not a spoiler, but because there are flashbacks, they have to put me in the hair and the clothes from then, which are not my faves. It’s fun because they also get to de-age me, which I’ve never gotten done. I’m like, &#8216;Cool, I can’t wait to see what that is.&#8217; There’s a lot of really fun stuff. And seeing Adam [Sandler] and Chris [McDonald], and even some of the crew was the same.”
“Adam is such a loyal, lovely person to work with, and he loves to take the people along with him from the get-go,” Bowens continued. “Perry [Andelin Blake], our production designer, has been with him since ‘Happy Gilmore,’ and he looks exactly the same.&#8221;
After many months of rumors, Netflix confirmed that “Happy Gilmore 2” was moving forward with a post shared in May. This came after Christopher McDonald, who played the golfer Shooter McGavin in the original film, suggested earlier this year that his character could be returning.
The film will feature several guest stars, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/adam-sandler-confirms-nfl-star-travis-kelce-will-have-a-cameo-in-happy-gilmore-2">including</a> Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
“Happy Gilmore” is a popular sports comedy starring Sandler playing an unsuccessful ice hockey player with anger issues who competes in a golf tournament in an attempt to save his grandmother’s home from foreclosure. The original movie earned $39 million on a $12 million budget.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/adam-sandler">Adam Sandler</a> confirmed rumors that Kansas City Chiefs tight end <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/travis-kelce">Travis Kelce,</a> who’s been making headlines all year for his high-profile romance with pop star Taylor Swift, will have a cameo in the upcoming comedy “Happy Gilmore 2.”
“Travis has… he mentioned it, so we have a nice something for Travis,” the actor said on a Tuesday night appearance of “The Tonight Show.” 
“He’s gonna come by,&#8221; Sandler continued. &#8220;He’s a very nice guy. You guys would love him in real life. What a big, handsome guy. Funny and cool as hell. He’s a stud and he’s so funny.”

The actor was referring to comments Kelce made about the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/movies">movie</a> on an episode of his own podcast in May. Kelce said he was a “huge fan of the Sandman [Sandler]” and would do “anything” to have a chance to appear in the movie.
“I didn’t even know there was a job opening on ‘Happy Gilmore 2.’ I’ll be a f***ing extra… anything to get around Happy Gilmore, an Adam Sandler film or set — count me in,” he said at the time. 
Kelce’s brother and podcast co-host, Jason Kelce, shut down the rumors, saying there was “no evidence” the cameo was happening.
“[No evidence] other than the movie’s getting made and I’m looking for movie deals,” Travis shot back, Billboard <a href="https://www.billboard.com/culture/tv-film/adam-sandler-travis-kelce-cameo-happy-gilmore-1235757435/">reported</a>. “Who knows? Theories can come true. Theories can be true and people just don’t know about it. I might even be in the talking and nobody knows about it, but I could also not be in the talking. Netflix announced in May that it was moving forward with a sequel to the 1996 golf comedy “Happy Gilmore,” starring Sandler as the titular character.
It’s not unprecedented for Kelce to make an appearance, as the original “Happy Gilmore” featured cameos from sports stars and celebrities, including golfer Lee Trevino, sportscaster Verne Lundquist, and former &#8220;The Price Is Right&#8221; host Bob Barker. Other Sandler productions included stars such as former NFL greats Lawrence Taylor, Michael Irvin, and Dan Marino, along with former professional wrestlers Bill Goldberg, Steve Austin, and Kevin Nash.
Kelce, 34, has already dipped his toes into the world of entertainment. He has a role in the upcoming FX horror series “Grotesquerie” and is hosting the Amazon Prime game show reboot “Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?” The nine-time Pro-Bowler is also in talks to star in the action comedy remake “Loose Cannons.”
There is no planned release date for “Happy Gilmore 2.” The highly anticipated sequel is slated to start filming in September.

Netflix has officially ordered a sequel to &#8220;Happy Gilmore,&#8221; one of Adam Sandler&#8217;s top comedies of all time.
The streaming giant told advertisers this week that it was moving forward with &#8220;Happy Gilmore 2&#8221;, starring Sandler.
&#8220;Happy Gilmore is back!&#8221; the company posted on X. &#8220;Adam Sandler will reprise his iconic role in a brand new movie coming to Netflix.&#8221;
The Hollywood Reporter <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/happy-gilmore-2-adam-sandler-netflix-1235900308/">said</a> that Sandler would return to his role from the 1996 film as a hockey player who discovered he could channel his rage into playing and winning golf tournaments.
The report said that the film is part of Netflix&#8217;s $250 million deal with the comedian, in which Sandler has already produced eight titles.

Christopher McDonald, who played the golfer Shooter McGavin in the original film, <a href="https://www.themirror.com/sport/golf/happy-gilmore-2-latest-news-401568">suggested</a> earlier this year that his character might be back in the new movie.
&#8220;I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, &#8216;McDonald, you&#8217;re gonna love this,'&#8221; McDonald said during an interview in March. &#8220;I said, &#8216;What? &#8216; He says, &#8216;How about that,&#8217; and he shows me the first draft of &#8216;Happy Gilmore 2.'&#8221;
&#8220;Maybe you should cut that out [of this audio] because I don&#8217;t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, &#8216;Well, that would be awesome.&#8217; So, it&#8217;s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!&#8221; he added.

The existence of a script for “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/movies">Happy Gilmore 2</a>” has been confirmed by Drew Barrymore.
The daytime talk show host revealed the news in a preview clip from Friday’s episode of her eponymous show.
“I want it. I need it. And I stayed up last night with my daughter watching ‘Billy Madison,’” Barrymore says in the video. “I sent Sandler a video of that, and then he sent me another video back, and I’m waiting to see if he’s confirming about the ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/entertainment">script</a>.”
Later, she seemed to confirm the movie’s existence after checking her phone. “This just in, I have breaking news,” Barrymore says. “I’ll just say this, from my source, that it is in process.”
She continued, “There is a process, and that process is in process.”

Rumors began circulating when Christopher McDonald, the actor who played villain Shooter McGavin in the original film, first shared that a script for the sequel existed.

Maybe you should cut that out because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So it’s in the works. Fans demand it, damn it!”

&#8220;[McDonald] texted me after the fact, &#8216;By the way, that thing you told me not to talk about, I talked about.&#8217; I said, &#8216;Oh, that&#8217;s good news.&#8217; All I did was tell him, see I did standup, I did a comedy special and a lot of my buddies came by and Shooter was one of them and I said, &#8216;Dude, we&#8217;ve been talking about a Happy 2 and we&#8217;re working on some stuff.&#8217; That&#8217;s all I told Shooter,” the comedian said during a Wednesday appearance on the “Dan Patrick Show.”  
“I said, &#8216;But don&#8217;t tell anybody. Don&#8217;t tell anybody.&#8217; And then he, you know he kept it mostly private. He told a couple of DJs about it. They usually are great at secrets, don&#8217;t you think?&#8221;
Patrick replied, &#8220;You should&#8217;ve known not to trust him,&#8221; which prompted Sandler to say he was &#8220;excited that Shooter was in the room with me. I love him.&#8221;
“Happy Gilmore” is a popular 1996 American sports comedy starring Sandler playing an unsuccessful ice hockey player who competes in a golf tournament in an attempt to save his grandmother&#8217;s home from foreclosure. The original movie earned $39 million on a $12 million budget. The film has a cult following in the golf community especially.

Comedian <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/adam-sandler">Adam Sandler</a> was the highest <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/money">earner</a> last year thanks in part to his partnership with the streaming giant Netflix. The 57-year-old celebrity starred in and produced “Murder Mystery 2,” a comedy about detectives launching their own agency, which also starred Jennifer Aniston (another name on the top earners list).
Sandler also wrote, produced, and did voice work on the coming-of-age musical comedy “Leo” and appeared in the action comedy “The Out-Laws,” also put out by Netflix. He acted alongside his wife and daughters  in the comedy “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.”
Thanks to these efforts, Sandler brought in $73 million for the year.
Second on the list of top earners for 2023 was Margot Robbie, star of the summer blockbuster “Barbie.” The actress earned $59 million last year, and at the age of 33, was the youngest celebrity to appear on the list for 2023. 
Tom Cruise came in third place thanks to “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.” The action thriller underperformed expectations but still brought in a huge payday for the A-lister. Cruise also earned residuals from his massive hit, “Top Gun: Maverick” (2022), bringing his salary in 2023 to an estimated $45 million. 
Two actors tied for the fourth place position. Both Matt Damon, who had a supporting role in the smash hit “Oppenheimer,” and Ryan Gosling, who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in “Barbie,” brought home $43 million. Damon’s earnings were boosted by selling “Air,” his first project with Artists Equity Studio, to Amazon for $130 million.
Other names rounding out the top 10 for 2023 include Jennifer Aniston ($42 million), Leonardo DiCaprio ($41 million), Jason Statham ($41 million), Ben Affleck ($38 million) and Denzel Washington ($24 million). 
Forbes noted that the results are estimated based on interviews and data collected from industry sites such as IMDbPro. The outlet also reported that the numbers represent taxed earnings for the whole year and only account for income accrued through entertainment projects.
Tyler Perry was the number one top earner on the list in 2022, while Dwayne Johnson took the top spot for three consecutive years prior, per <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/film/2024/mar/08/adam-sandler-beats-margot-robbie-to-be-named-hollywoods-top-earner">The Guardian</a>.

Sandler told O’Brien that his feelings of discomfort around international superstar Taylor Swift have everything to do with his two daughters, 17-year-old Sadie and 15-year-old Sunny, who he shares with his wife, Jackie.
&#8220;You know what, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/taylor-swift">Taylor Swift</a>, because what she means to my kids, I get a little f***ing jumpy. Just cause I don&#8217;t wanna blow it for my kids,&#8221; Sandler said during a conversation about celebrities who make them feel a certain way. &#8220;So I&#8217;m a little like, &#8216;Taylor, Taylor,&#8217; like I talk a little too loud or something. I don&#8217;t act as cool as I can.&#8221;

Sunny performed a cover of Swift’s hit song “Lover” at one of her dad’s stand-up comedy shows in October. 
The comedian was also spotted <a href="https://people.com/taylor-swift-hugs-adam-sandlers-daughters-eras-tour-film-8356274">attending</a> the Los Angeles premiere of the smash hit movie, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” along with his two daughters. Swift was photographed stopping briefly to hug Sandler, Sunny, and Sadie on her way out of the theater at the film’s conclusion.

&#8220;The Kelly Clarkson Show&#8221; won the &#8220;Daytime Talk Show of the Year&#8221; award, with &#8220;The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon&#8221; being named the winner of &#8220;The Nighttime Talk Show of the Year,&#8221; and Jimmy Kimmel winning &#8220;The Host of the Year&#8221; for &#8220;That&#8217;s My Jam.&#8221;
Taking a look at the music winners, Taylor Swift won several awards, one for &#8220;Female Artist of the Year,&#8221; another for &#8220;Pop Artist of the Year,&#8221; &#8220;The Concert Tour of the Year,&#8221; followed by winning &#8220;The Social Celebrity of the Year&#8221; award.
&#8220;Hip-Hop Artist of the Year&#8221; was given to Nicki Minaj, while Beyonce won &#8220;The R&amp;B Artist of the Year&#8221; and Ice Spice was named &#8220;The New Artist of the Year.&#8221; The &#8220;Collaboration Song of the Year&#8221; award went to &#8220;Barbie World&#8221; by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice with Aqua.

During the premiere of his new animated Netflix film, &#8220;Leo,&#8221; on Sunday, the 57-year-old actor posed for photos surrounded by daughters, 17-year-old Sadie and 15-year-old Sunny, and wife Jackie, all of whom worked on the movie.
&#8220;I tell them to make sure you feel good about what you do and how hard you worked, and you judge yourself,&#8221; Sandler told <a href="https://people.com/adam-sandler-advice-two-daughters-sadie-sunny-8404622" target="_blank" rel="noopener">People magazine</a> about the career advice. &#8220;Don&#8217;t let too many people try to get in your head. If you feel like you gave it your all, that&#8217;s all you can ask.&#8221;

The &#8220;Grown Ups&#8221; star talked about getting to work with his family again. They appeared in his last film earlier this year called, &#8220;You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.&#8221;
&#8220;[It’s] always fun to be with my family,&#8221; Sandler said. &#8220;It&#8217;s kind of what they are thinking about getting into and their passion, and so it&#8217;s good to learn with them.&#8221;
Sandler seemed to hint that his family could appear with him again in another upcoming project.

&#8220;You never know, but we had a great time at that bat mitzvah movie,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And this one, we started doing this four years ago, and they grew up a little bit while doing this movie, so it&#8217;s been really nice.&#8221;
Sandler&#8217;s daughters have spent years working on projects with him, with more than 20 professional acting credits. Most are from appearing in their father&#8217;s movies such as &#8220;You Don&#8217;t Mess with the Zohan,&#8221; &#8220;Bedtime Stories,&#8221; and &#8220;Grown Ups.&#8221;
Adam and Jackie first met on the set of his 1999 comedy &#8220;Big Daddy&#8221; and worked together on several other projects, including &#8220;Little Nicky&#8221; (2000) and &#8220;Eight Crazy Nights&#8221; (2002). They tied the knot in 2003.

Actress Julianna Margulies is getting a crash course in Hollywood’s complicated Jewish ties.
Not only does the “Morning Show” star lament the lack of industry outrage over Hamas’ terrorist attacks on Israel, she also bemoans <a href="https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/juliana-margulies-regrets-wearing-cross-morning-show-hollywood-antisemitism-1235760710/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">how few shows and films embrace Jewish faith</a>.
“On TV, characters are not ever wearing the Star of David,” the former “ER” star said at Variety’s Hollywood and Antisemitism summit earlier this month. “It’s so easy to put on a cross. Why isn’t it just as easy to put on a Star of David?”
Comic actor Adam Sandler is a notable, relentless exception.
The “Saturday Night Live” alum has spent decades highlighting his Jewish roots in both big-screen comedies and in tunes. Unapologetically so.
And it all started with a song on the show that made him a star.
Each Christmas season, radio stations break out Sandler’s “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUCNAnp2QAI" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chanukah Song,</a>” one of the few Jewish ditties to go mainstream over the past 30-odd years. Sandler introduced the number via “Saturday Night Live” in 1994, and it quickly became a sensation.

Silly, self-aware, and sweet, the song became a Sandler trademark, one he updated a few times to add more current Jewish celebrities.

The song proved more than just a seasonal ditty.
Village Voice critic J. Hoberman praised Sandler and the song for <a href="https://www.villagevoice.com/antichrist-superstar/">changing perspectives about American Jews.</a>
Sandler’s open cultural narcissism — identifying a “list of people who are Jewish just like you and me” on national TV without fear that this might be a problem — dispensed with the underlying subject of American Jewish comedy. Say it loud. No more anxious self-deprecation. Just the slightest bit of irony!
The comic actor followed the song up with “Eight Crazy Nights,” 2002’s animated ode to Chanukah that failed to replicate the song’s pop culture sting. The film may have borrowed a lyric from the song for its title, but both critics and audiences soured on its collection of crude gags and uninspired storytelling.
It might be better than nothing as far as mainstream animated films dedicated to Chanukah, but it’s pretty close to zilch.
Unbowed, Sandler continued to embrace Judaism in his films and TV projects. Many of his film characters are Jewish, and given they hail from his Happy Madison production company that’s no accident.
Even wacky Sandler romps like “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” found the star addressing his spiritual connections. The title character of the 2008 comedy, a hairstylist and Israeli counter-terrorist agent, moves to America hoping to leave the simmering tensions back home behind.

Sander’s sexually-charged hero ends up mending fences with his Palestinian frenemy, (John Turturro) a hopeful message amidst the usual Sandler shtick.
His Jewish pride carried over to dramas made beyond his Happy Madison universes.
Slate Magazine called his celebrated turn in 2019’s “Uncut Gems” the “most Jewish movie in years. Co-director Josh Safdie told the site it was no accident.

Obviously, we are Jewish, so that perspective is easy for us. But in addition to that, the early inspirations were these titanic 20th-century Jews, these overachievers, these overcompensators, these guys with interesting perspectives based on that, trying to work their way into society: the Rodney Dangerfields, the Lenny Bruces, the Don Rickles, the Al Goldsteins.</blockquote>
Vulture.com dubbed Sandler’s 2017 drama “The Meyerowitz Stories” “the <a href="https://www.vulture.com/2017/12/the-meyerowitz-stories-is-the-perfect-hanukkah-movie.html">Perfect Hanukkah Movie, Just Without the Hanukkah.”</a>
<blockquote>While each character has been individually shaded with fine strokes, the big, fractious Meyerowitz clan falls into a lot of the classic portrayals of Jewish families. They’re preoccupied with education and academic accomplishment, expert-level kvetchers, and noisily dysfunctional. Moreover, they hail from the Upper West Side of Manhattan; flanked by Barnard and Columbia to the north and Lincoln Center to the south, it’s an epicenter of culture and identity for the Tribe.</blockquote>
Sandler’s most recent film, another Netflix original, revolves around Jewish tradition.
“You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah” finds Sandler working alongside his real-life daughters Sunny and Sadie Sandler and his wife, Jackie. Yes, the story is spun from the 2005 novel of the same name, but Sandler used his movie star clout to bring it to Netflix, cultural touchstones firmly in place.
The focus is on PG-rated laughter, but elements of Jewish tradition get a sizable closeup.

Sandler doesn’t involve himself in Hollywood politics, nor does he pick sides in election years. He lets his comedy speak for him. He still took issue with Pink Floyd alum Roger Waters, renowned for his savage opinions against the state of Israel, <a href="https://jewishjournal.com/commentary/opinion/rob_eshman/180474/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">during a 2015 interview on “The Howard Stern Show.”</a>
<blockquote>I’m proud of being a Jew and that’s what I am,” Sandler said. “I get that from my father and mother … I’m very pro-Israel and when someone says s*** about Israel, and I know people say shit about Israel and they f***ing won’t play there… and when you go off on Roger Waters I love that you do that. I’m disgusted that they single out Israel that [they say], ‘We can’t play Israel.’ All these f***ing nice Israeli people are getting a ‘f*** you’ from Roger Waters.</blockquote>
Sandler’s open embrace of his faith began with a <a href="https://www.thejc.com/life-and-culture/all/is-adam-sandler-jewish-the-netflix-star-with-proud-hebrew-heritage-1tuZoqqbMxCzNFIWimONr2#:~:text=In%20the%20last%20decades%2C%20Sandler%27s,the%20Safdie%20Brothers%27%20Uncut%20Gems." target="_blank" rel="noopener">simple confession</a> made prior to playing “The Chanukah Song” for the first time on “SNL.”

Since then, he’s leveraged his movie star clout for unapologetically Jewish characters so future generations will feel a little less left out.
