In a new &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/episode/resisting-indoctrination-abigail-shrier-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sunday Special</a>&#8221; interview, Daily Wire Editor Emeritus Ben Shapiro spoke to author Abigail Shrier about the worsening mental health crisis among today&#8217;s youth.
During their hour-long discussion, Shapiro asked Shrier about some of the themes in her latest book, “Bad Therapy: Why the Kids Aren’t Growing Up,” released in February.
Shrier posits that the youngest generation might be less resilient because they are encouraged to focus on their bad feelings under the guise of working them out. Therapy, she suggests, might not be helping as much as we think it is.
&#8220;Let&#8217;s talk about what&#8217;s ailing the kids,&#8221; Shapiro began, noting there has been a &#8220;systemic change in therapy&#8221; in recent years. He asked Shrier whether she believes smartphones and social media could be a significant issue for children as well.
Shrier responded that &#8220;a lot of harms&#8221; come from kids having phones, &#8220;but does it totally explain the mental health decline of young people? No, it clearly doesn&#8217;t.&#8221;
Shrier cited federal <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/childrensmentalhealth/data.html#:~:text=1%20in%206%20U.S.%20children,%2C%20behavioral%2C%20or%20developmental%20disorder." target="_blank" rel="noopener">data</a> showing that children eight and under, who are not usually on social media, also have high rates of mental health or behavioral diagnoses.
&#8220;It isn&#8217;t just a question of the phones,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It&#8217;s also a question of the unhealthy life we&#8217;ve given kids which includes this constant therapy, this constant sense from schools, from parents, and yes from therapists that there&#8217;s something wrong with them, that they have trauma, and that they need a diagnosis and medication.&#8221;
&#8220;Shyness. We never hear a kid described as shy. They have social phobia or social anxiety,&#8221; Shrier added. &#8220;Every child who&#8217;s inattentive is told they have ADHD.&#8221;
Later in the discussion, Shapiro noted, &#8220;We&#8217;re telling kids that they ought to be coddled, because we&#8217;ve told adults that they ought to be coddled.&#8221;
&#8220;No one says to a child, &#8216;Shake it off. You&#8217;re fine,'&#8221; Shrier agreed. &#8220;No one is telling kids even at a small level that they can overcome minor injuries, so they don&#8217;t think they can.&#8221;
Shapiro also asked Shrier for her advice to parents currently considering where to send their children to school.
&#8220;Number one, parental authority. Kids need your authority,&#8221; Shrier said. &#8220;Make sure that we communicate our values to our kids. We&#8217;re doing a lousy job of that in the country, and we send them off to school where teachers can&#8217;t wait to pass on their values to your kids, so don&#8217;t let that happen.&#8221;
&#8220;Everyone&#8217;s obsessed with making kids. happy. We should be more focused on making them strong,&#8221; she said.

On Wednesday, two days after Elon Musk purchased Twitter, Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal boasted that he had taken his job to “change Twitter for the better, course correct where we need to, and strengthen the service.”

In November 2020, Target stated they had removed Shrier’s book after a customer complained about the book being “transphobic.”
“Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention,” Target’s online help desk responded to the complaint. “We have removed this book from our assortment.”

The day after Target removed the book, they issued a statement saying, “Yesterday, we removed a book from Target.com based on feedback we received. We want to offer a broad assortment for our guests and are adding this book back to Target.com. We apologize for any confusion.”

On Sunday, in the wake of a second female teammate of University of Pennsylvania of transgender swimmer Lia Thomas coming forward to delineate the emotional devastation wrought by Thomas on the women of the university’s swimming team, author Abigail Shrier, the acclaimed author of the book “Irreversible Damage,” powerfully exhorted the women athletes at the University of Pennsylvania to speak out about the unfairness of biological men competing in women’s sports.
Shrier tweeted: “To the female athletes at Penn: Your school is telling you to keep your head down and try for second place. You weren&#8217;t born for second place. Girls in the U.S. will soon give up trying to compete at the highest levels of sports at all. Speak up NOW.”

<blockquote>A second member of the University of Pennsylvania’s swim team has reportedly come forward to speak about the calamitous effect teammate Lia Thomas, a biological man, has had on the team while Thomas smashes women’s records in competitions and leaves the women far behind. The teammate told <a href="https://www.outkick.com/outkick-exclusive-second-female-penn-swimmer-steps-forward/">Outkick</a> that Thomas bragged after winning the 200 freestyle at the University of Akron Zippy Invitational, “That was so easy, I was cruising,” and after winning the 500 freestyle but disappointed with the time, boasted, “At least I’m still No. 1 in the country” in front of teammates.
In November, Thomas smashed the record in the 200 free time and the second-fastest 500 free time, with both times breaking Penn program records. Over the weekend, Thomas won the 1650 free by a whopping 38 seconds, the 500 free by 12 seconds, and the 200 free by seven seconds.
“Well, obviously she’s No. 1 in the country because she’s at a clear physical advantage after having gone through male puberty and getting to train with testosterone for years. Of course you’re No. 1 in the country when you’re beating a bunch of females. That’s not something to brag about,” the teammate commented.
The teammate said her fellow women teammates were crying on the Akron pool deck because they knew they had no chance of winning with Thomas competing. She said, “They feel so discouraged because no matter how much work they put in it, they’re going to lose. Usually, they can get behind the blocks and know they out-trained all their competitors and they’re going to win and give it all they’ve got. Now they’re having to go behind the blocks knowing no matter what, they do not have the chance to win. I think that it’s really getting to everyone.” …
The teammate noted that after Thomas won, “Usually everyone claps, everyone is yelling and cheering when someone wins a race. Lia touched the wall and it was just silent in there. … When [Penn swimmer] Anna [Kalandadze] finished second, the crowd erupted in applause.” …
She continued, “Honestly, this is so upsetting to us because we want to be acknowledged for our hard work, but it seems like this just keeps overshadowing us. Put Lia out of the picture — we have a really good team this year. We have one of the best teams we’ve had in years, and that’s being overshadowed by [Lia]. … Even without Lia, we had the chance to win the Ivy League this year, which is a huge deal for us. We train every single day and give up so much for this sport. And I love swimming. I do it because I love it. It’s been a part of my life forever, and this is a slap in the face that the NCAA doesn’t care about the integrity of women’s sports.”
“This is such a cloud over everything. A cloud in the locker room, especially the last few days because we all know of how things have changed in the last week. On Thursday, a Fairfax County father of three daughters elicited applause after asking the county school board to add Abigail Shrier’s powerful expose dealing with transgender transitions, “Irreversible Damage,” to the school’s library, as he said, “There should be room after the <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/books-containing-pedophilia-graphic-sex-depictions-have-been-pulled-from-fairfax-schools/">pornographic book involving fourth-graders</a> and sexual acts is removed.”
Kevin Zrenda began, “It’s okay to believe that God loves you as the boy or girl he created you as. I have three daughters here in these public schools and I applied multiple times to speak on the safety of the girls in our schools. Given the news of the alleged rape in neighboring Loudoun County by a boy in a skirt using the girl&#8217;s bathroom, I focus on that. Scott Smith, we pray for your family.”
He then addressed the board directly: “With your policies on gender fluidity, you have placed our daughters at risk, allowing no room for their safety or disagreement; no free speech, no parental notification. Teachers lose their jobs if they fail to use the correct pronoun. School board, tell the students to love one another; to be kind to one another and that you can do so while also disagreeing about this. Tell them that they are beautifully and wonderfully made, created in a certain way as a boy or girl, not that they can be some sort of avatar generation. That is not love. That is a lie.”
“I move that a copy of Abigail Shrier’s book, ‘Irreversible Damage,’ be placed on the shelves,” he asserted. “There should be room after the pornographic book involving fourth-graders and sexual acts is removed.”
“Shrier’s book is actually educational; she interviewed hundreds of teens experiencing gender dysphoria,” he noted. “Most mature and revert back to their actual gender. Most transgender used to be boys, but the recent explosion has put girls in the majority. Studies show that it mostly is spread along social networking lines and friend groups, mostly white, young, middle-income suburban girls with what is known as rapid-onset gender dysphoria.”
“Remember that time when we were all against gender mutilation as something that happened overseas in some other culture?” he recalled. “Her book shows most youth that undergoes genital surgery return to having the same levels of stress, anxiety and depression as before, even when surrounded by families that love them and affirm them. Love these kids, but tell them the truth. I want to know if this board will stand against the (unintelligible) support of those experiencing body dysphoria. Some people actually believe they’re disabled and have surgically removed arms, self-blind.”
He concluded, “Do we have to encourage them to blind themselves to pretend to love them? Please add ‘Irreversible Damage’ to the library. God loves me.”

This week, author Abigail Shrier, who has been and continues to be attacked by the “woke” movement for her book “Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters,” fired back at the “woke” movement, charging, “The Woke are not zany guests. They are home-invasion robbers.”
NBC News <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/amazon-workers-petition-two-quit-over-anti-lgbtq-book-sales-n1273870">reported</a> this week that at least two Amazon employees had recently quit protesting Amazon’s selling of Shrier’s book. As <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/amazon-workers-petition-two-quit-over-anti-lgbtq-book-sales-n1273870">reported</a> by NBC News, “The resignations come after a complaint posted to the company’s internal message board in April drew the support of over 467 Amazon corporate employees, according to a copy obtained by NBC News. As of last year, the company employed over 1.3 million people worldwide and is the second-largest employer in the U.S.”
“Shrier said in a statement, per the outlet: ‘This issue won&#8217;t go away just because some disgruntled Amazon employees wish it would. And banning the book won&#8217;t help these girls or anyone else. … My book goes out of its way to honor the experiences of transgender adults, never disparages them, and never implies that the trans identity is a mental illness,&#8217;” <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/amazon-employees-sign-petition-quit-over-company-selling-book-about-transgender-movement/">The Daily Wire</a> noted.

Shrier’s essay on <a href="https://abigailshrier.substack.com/p/want-to-save-america-dont-act-like">Substack</a> started by lauding anti-Critical Race Theory activist Chris Rufo as she stated that he is &#8220;doing something so spectacularly unconservative, he may need to update his political affiliation: he’s winning.”
“He’s become the person we think of whenever ‘Critical Race Theory’ is mentioned,” she opined.  &#8220;For the first time in years, Ibram X. Kendi and Nikole-Hannah Jones face actual pushback to the white-hatred they peddle and division they feast upon. Parents have someone they can turn to for <a href="https://twitter.com/realchrisrufo/status/1413292881264005126">evidence</a>, argument, and reassurance of their marrow-deep sense that the racial essentialism in their kids’ classroom is wrong and that it’s not racist to say so. For the first time in years, the rejection of &#8216;Critical Race Theory&#8217; is gaining ground.”
Shrier pointed out that Rufo’s success derived from the fact that “he speaks not to the elites, but to Americans, and he makes an intelligible argument: ‘Anti-Racism’ is just racism in progressive clothing; it’s teaching our kids to hate themselves and each other.&#8221;
Shrier decried the “hyper-polite fecklessness on one side of the boat and chest-thumping ignorance on the other,” displayed by many conservatives, citing as feckless Oklahoma GOP Senator James Langford’s passive response when questioning HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra about HHS using the term “birthing person” instead of “mother.” Langford said, “We don’t want to offend in our language. I get that. But would you at least admit calling a mom a ‘birthing person’ could be offensive to some moms?”
Shrier snapped, “It’s <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N18oBWG-iSE">a clip worth watching</a> because it exemplifies decades of Republican failure in culture wars that have seen Leftists wipe the floor with them. … if this is the best Republicans can muster, they deserve to be trounced over and over.”
Instead, she suggested asserting, “Mothers are not ‘birthing people,’ and to call us that is a disgrace. To refuse to call us mothers is an abomination, too. Sex-based rights are not yours to give away.”
“And if Republicans can’t say that, they should pack up their things; at least they won’t be in the way,” she continued. “The last thing America needs right now is more wallpaper over cracks. Time to toss out the &#8216;Aw Shucks Conservatism&#8217; of navy blazers and boat shoes, the sort that believes matching jammies on Christmas suffices to save a country on the brink. That approach may have excelled when churches and civil society were strong and conservatives needed only to get married, raise a family, and perform the simple heroism of showing up. Today, it’s a loser.”

At the Senate Judicial Committee Hearing on the Equality Act on Wednesday, independent journalist Abigail Shrier presented a serious testimony against the Equality Act due to the inequality it would ensure for young girls and women.
Shrier was the focus of controversy after writing a book last year that focused on the transgender movement among young girls, titled <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Irreversible-Damage-Transgender-Seducing-Daughters/dp/1684510317">&#8220;Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters.&#8221;</a>
Shrier has been criticized for being anti-transgender even though she <a href="https://www.mixcloud.com/TheJoeRoganExperience/1509-abigail-shrier/">says</a> her <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Irreversible-Damage-Transgender-Seducing-Daughters/dp/1684510317">book</a> has nothing to do with adults being transgender, but rather is about the &#8220;trans epidemic&#8221; that impacts young girls. She has also spoken out against censorship in the book world.
Last month, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-end-of-conservative-books-amazon-quietly-bans-books-they-deem-offensive-hate-speech">The Daily Wire</a> reported on Shrier&#8217;s tweet thread regarding Amazon&#8217;s book-banning:
<blockquote>“We’re really not making a big enough deal of the fact that [Amazon] has begun deleting books,” she said. “Amazon now claims the right to bar all books that are ‘inappropriate or offensive.’ Of course, nearly *every book* worth reading could be characterized as ‘inappropriate’ or ‘offensive’ to someone.”</blockquote>
At the Senate hearing, Shrier began her testimony by saying, &#8220;Gay and transgender Americans are living today with less fear and stigma than at any point in American history – and that makes me very happy. It should make us all very proud.&#8221;
Shrier stated that she would support the bill in question if it increased rights regarding employment and public housing to transgender and gay Americans. However, she said that she is testifying against it because it does more than that. Shrier said, &#8220;No one who wrote [the bill] appears to have thoughtfully considered what it would mean for women and girls.&#8221;
Shrier argued that the bill would set women and young girls back in the realm of equality — and it would potentially put them in physical danger. Shrier questioned, &#8220;Members of the Committee, if your daughter or granddaughter was the top high school tennis player in her state, and then five biological boys suddenly decided, at the age of 17, to identify as female — should she drop overnight to number 6? Should she lose her college scholarship to a male-bodied athlete who would never have qualified on the boys’ team? Does that strike any member of this Committee as fair or just?”
&#8220;If a woman in your state commits a crime, should she be put in a correctional facility with biological males, some of whom are sex offenders? Some of whom may have only begun identifying as female weeks earlier? All of whom could easily overpower her,” she continued.
Shrier added, &#8220;The plain truth is that it is not sensible, not safe, and certainly not just, to end these hard-won protections for women and girls in the name of equality.&#8221;
The journalist also made the point that &#8220;gender identity can be very ephemeral,&#8221; noting that even well-known gender therapists have concluded that people can be on a &#8220;gender journey&#8221; where they identify differently day-to-day. She affirmed that those people have the freedom to do that in this country, but asked, &#8220;Should we undermine women’s sports and protective spaces to allow gender-fluid males a gender journey?&#8221;
In a defense of transgender people, Shrier seemed to refer to her book about the transgender movement. She said, &#8220;I have probably interviewed more transgender Americans than any person in this room. And I can honestly say that, excepting political activists, most do not want to obliterate women’s rights and safe spaces.”
&#8220;Most would never think of stealing women’s scholarships by forcing young women into demoralizing contests with male bodies. But Gender Ideology, which is at the heart of this bill, is misogyny in progressive clothing. Gender Ideology tells women and girls they are not entitled to their fear or their sense of unfairness as their protective spaces are eliminated.&#8221;
Shrier concluded with a recognition of women like the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who &#8220;fought to create sex-based protections to make life safe and fair for women.&#8221;
In a strong closing argument, Shrier told the committee, &#8220;If you vote to take away those rights, don’t pretend you’ve achieved a civil rights victory. In the name of inclusivity, you’ll have made life far less safe, far less fair, and far less inclusive for America&#8217;s women and girls.&#8221;

Grace Lavery tweeted, “Since some ppl have misunderstood my tone, and censorship is an important matter and as a public educator I have a duty to be precise, let me clarify: I do NOT advocate defacing library books. I DO encourage followers to steal Abigail Shrier’s book and burn it on a pyre.”

The Amazon description of the book includes the phrase “Until just a few years ago, gender dysphoria—severe discomfort in one’s biological sex—”
The Daily Wire noted that the temporary censorship ironically led to a spike in the purchasing of the book on other platforms.
