Competitive eating legend Joey Chestnut just did it again when he broke a record after downing nearly four dozen chicken fingers in just minutes.
It all went down Wednesday in Las Vegas at a new Raising Cane&#8217;s chicken restaurant in honor of National Chicken Finger Day. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-joey-chestnut-manhandles-protester-while-scarfing-down-63-hot-dogs-in-15th-july-fourth-contest-win">Chestnut</a> set a new record when he scarfed down 44 Cane&#8217;s chicken fingers in five minutes.
The whole spectacle was live-streamed and shared on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2s2mMDDCVTs">YouTube</a> by Cane&#8217;s. In the clip that can be seen below, the man who&#8217;s proved he&#8217;s the Tom Brady of competitive eating admitted before the timer started that he would have to &#8220;hustle&#8221; in order to break the record.
&#8220;These things are big [the chicken fingers],&#8221; Joey explained. &#8220;They&#8217;re big. They&#8217;re meaty. But they&#8217;re delicious. I&#8217;m gonna have to hustle. Just find my happy place and keep going. So, I think 40 to 50, it&#8217;s doable.&#8221;

At the start of the competition, it was announced that there were 75 of the restaurant&#8217;s famed chicken fingers placed in front of Chestnut. The MC then counted down from five before the giant clock on the table started ticking away.
The competitive eater then began wolfing one chicken finger at a time while he was flanked by two Vegas dancers, who were wearing red sparkling dresses, feather boas, and feather headgear.
The crowd cheered his name &#8220;Joey, Joey&#8221; and rooted Chestnut on as he tackled one chicken finger after another. The champ rotated between shoving the chicken fingers in his mouth to taking drinks to help get them them all down.
The &#8220;American Legend,&#8221; as the MC labeled him, seemed to tackle the first two dozen without any struggle at all before he appeared to be moving more methodically as the clock ticked down. Then, it was announced that &#8220;Joey Chestnut&#8221; had set a new record for the restaurant chain, eating 44 Cane&#8217;s chicken fingers in just five minutes.
After the champ got a chance to breathe and soak up his victory, Joey said he was &#8220;living the dream&#8221; by getting to travel the country and set records for eating great food.
On July 4, Chestnut scored his 15th Nathan&#8217;s Hot Dog Eating Contest win in 16 years, after chowing 63 hot dogs in 10 minutes, as <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-joey-chestnut-manhandles-protester-while-scarfing-down-63-hot-dogs-in-15th-july-fourth-contest-win">The Daily Wire</a> previously reported.

State taxpayers reportedly picked up the tab for California Governor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/gavin-newsom">Gavin Newsom</a>&#8216;s security detail during his recent vacation to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/montana">Montana</a>, despite a ban on state-funded travel to Big Sky Country and 21 other states whose laws offend Left-coast liberals.
The development, buried in a Thursday New York Times article about President Biden, could at least be a violation of the spirit of <a href="https://oag.ca.gov/ab1887">California Assembly Bill 1887</a>, which Newsom&#8217;s predecessor, Jerry Brown, signed into law in 2016 to ensure state funds don&#8217;t help the economies of an ever-growing list of states whose laws California deems discriminatory.
“His kids are visiting their grandparents for his daughter’s birthday, as they do every year,” Newsom&#8217;s spokesman, Anthony York, told the Times. “On the security side, the law explicitly states there is an exemption for public safety, and the governor has to travel with security.&#8221;
Indeed, the law contains exceptions for taxpayer funded travel, including one for &#8220;the protection of public health, welfare, or safety, as determined by the affected agency, department, board, authority, or commission.&#8221; But York&#8217;s initial deflections about funding of the trip to Newsom&#8217;s in-laws’ ranch in the Bitterroot Valley, first <a href="https://calmatters.org/newsletters/whatmatters/2022/07/gavin-newsom-montana/">reported</a> Wednesday by CalMatters’ Emily Hoeven, only seemed to spur confusion.
&#8220;SCOOP! The travel ban applies to using state funds,&#8221; York tweeted. &#8220;The Governor’s travel is not being paid by the state. Connecting the two is an attempt at gotcha journalism that is neither gotcha nor journalism. The governor is on a vacation with his family. He will return later this week.&#8221;
Jennifer Van Laar of <a href="https://redstate.com/jenvanlaar/2022/07/06/it-sure-seems-gavin-newsom-broke-ca-law-by-making-his-security-detail-travel-to-montana-n589555">RedState</a> said it appeared that Newsom&#8217;s travel arrangements did not comply with the law and wondered if the millionaire governor intended to reimburse taxpayers.
“It’s important to note that York did not say that Newsom planned to reimburse the state for the cost of that travel, and even if he did, that wouldn’t satisfy the law, since the law specifically states both that the state cannot require an employee to travel to any of the states on the list and that the state cannot approve a request to fund such travel,” she <a href="https://redstate.com/jenvanlaar/2022/07/08/newsom-admits-state-paid-for-his-security-details-travel-to-montana-laughably-claims-public-safety-exception-to-law-n590988">noted</a>. “So, Newsom’s only way out is to claim an exemption.”
Whether Newsom&#8217;s personal safety justified an exception to the ban or not, the optics of a trip to a state on California&#8217;s naughty list were just the latest example of Newsom&#8217;s &#8220;rules for thee, not for me&#8221; image. The governor was roundly accused of hypocrisy when he was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ritzy-restaurant-where-ca-gov-newsom-was-caught-dining-received-millions-in-covid-19-relief-funds-report">caught attending a dinner party at French Laundry</a>, a posh Napa Valley eatery, at the height of the COVID pandemic. At the time, the state forbade large indoor gatherings.
The controversy, fueled by leaked photos of Newsom and the other guests maskless and eschewing social distancing recommendations, helped prompt an ultimately unsuccessful recall effort against Newsom. Perhaps just as galling to ordinary folks as the images of Newsom and his pals flaunting COVID restrictions was the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/no-masks-all-indoors-award-winning-journalist-claims-22-people-attended-newsom-dinner-not-12-15k-bar-bill">reported size of the bar tab</a> they ran up: $15,000.

Video of a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/fourth-of-july">Fourth of July</a> fireworks disaster in a family&#8217;s front yard has gone viral on Twitter in the latest cautionary tale about blowing things up to celebrate America&#8217;s independence.
The 31-second clip had been viewed by nearly 25 million people within 24 hours of hitting the internet Tuesday evening. It shows a group of people &#8211; including what appears to be a toddler &#8211; milling around or sitting on lawn chairs as three men light fireworks on the sidewalk near the driveway, where a van is parked. Throughout the footage, the SimpliSafe home security systems logo can be seen in the top left corner of the frame.

After the men ignite the first firework, sparks fly dangerously close to the spectators as the men scramble to get out of the way. A woman snatches the toddler up and retreats as the men can be heard discussing amateur pyrotechnics. As a boy wanders near the rear of the van in the driveway, flames start shooting from what was presumably a fireworks arsenal located behind the vehicle that was ignited by an errant spark.
The youth retreats as the fireworks trove goes off in a series of explosions and growing ball of flame that resembles a war zone.
It appeared that everyone involved made it to safety, although no one seemed to know where the event took place. The video was first posted on Reddit in the &#8220;CrazyF***ingVideos&#8221; thread, but was later taken down by the original uploader.
In San Antonio Tuesday, Pablo Ruiz, 43, died after lighting fireworks on the top of his head, police said. First responders found him suffering from severe head trauma, with brain matter exposed from his skull, police said.
A pal who witnessed Ruiz&#8217;s death said he had been drinking when he decided to light the mortar-style firework from the top of his head. Investigators believe it exploded from the bottom of the tube, piercing his skull.

In subsequent comments to <a href="https://6abc.com/philadelphia-july-4th-shooting-philly-police-officers-shot-party-on-the-parkway-officer/12019494/">6ABC</a>, Kenney admitted that incidents like the Fourth of July shooting make him look forward to no longer serving as mayor.
“There’s not an event or a day where I don’t lay on my back and look at the ceiling and worry about stuff. So everything we have in the city over the last seven years, I worry about,” Kenney remarked. “I don’t enjoy the Fourth of July, I don’t enjoy the Democratic National Convention, I don’t enjoy the NFL draft — I’m waiting for something bad to happen all the time.”
“So I’ll be happy when I’m not here, when I’m not mayor, and I can enjoy some stuff,” he added.

The bewildered reporter clarified, “You’re looking forward to not being mayor?” Kenney replied, “Yeah,” before appearing to laugh awkwardly.
Kenney assumed office as mayor of Philadelphia in 2016 after serving on the Philadelphia City Council since 1992. His current term expires in 2024.
Despite his pessimism, Kenney took a different approach on social media. “Our traditions cannot and will not be ruined by the scourge of gun violence,” he <a href="https://twitter.com/PhillyMayor/status/1544183263584976896?s=20&amp;t=oteafu0lr1wPaspEQCsnyQ">said</a> after the shooting. “I love this city, and as Mayor, there’s nothing more I want than to help solve this problem and keep our residents and visitors safe.”
Yet Philadelphia has languished in recent years. The city experienced its <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/04/01/1089406018/philadelphia-set-a-homicide-record-in-2021-now-police-hope-a-new-tactic-deters-c">highest level of homicides</a> in 2021, with 562 murders. The most recent surge in killings began in 2020, according to <a href="https://www.phillypolice.com/crime-maps-stats/">Philadelphia Police Department</a> data.
Last month, three people were murdered and 11 wounded in a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/three-dead-11-wounded-in-late-night-mass-shooting-in-philadelphia-restaurant-and-bar-district">mass shooting</a> involving multiple gunmen in a neighborhood of Philadelphia known for its bars and restaurants. “The events that transpired last evening on South Street are beyond devastating,” Kenney said at the time. “Once again, we see lives senselessly lost and those injured in yet another horrendous, brazen and despicable act of gun violence.”
Economic woes have also struck the city as soaring gas prices impact low-income residents. The Daily Wire recently <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/everything-is-too-high-right-now-in-west-philadelphia-residents-battle-inflation-and-gas-prices">interviewed</a> residents of West Philadelphia — where median household income is 43% of the national level — about their struggles to make ends meet.
“It’s too high. I don’t know what happened, because the price of everything is too high now,” Mohamed, a West Philadelphia resident and immigrant from French-speaking Africa, told The Daily Wire. Gas prices have significantly impacted him due to his daily commute to nearby New Jersey.
“I was using maybe $30 per week. Now I use almost $100,” Iliassou Koukpelerou, who drives a Hyundai Ioniq hybrid, told The Daily Wire. “It’s too much. I don’t know what they’re going to do about it.&#8221;
“They have to do something to lower the prices, so we can enjoy the way we were before,” he continued. “People don’t have money in their pockets anymore.”

President <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/biden-administration">Joe Biden</a> responded to the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/4th-of-july">Fourth of July</a> <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mass-shooting">shooting</a> in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/highland-park">Highland Park</a>, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/illinois">Illinois</a>, by grieving with the victims and lauding recent <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/gun-control">gun control</a> legislation.
The 21-year-old suspect allegedly <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/heres-what-we-know-about-the-highland-park-parade-shooter">killed</a> six people and hospitalized at least 30 others from his perch on a suburban Chicago rooftop, where police later recovered a “high-powered rifle.” Officers <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/person-of-interest-named-in-july-4-parade-massacre-in-highland-park">caught</a> the suspect five miles north of Highland Park later on Independence Day. The Daily Wire does not name mass shooting suspects once they are in custody as part of a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/why-daily-wire-will-no-longer-publish-names-or-ben-shapiro">policy</a> aimed at depriving them of the notoriety they often crave.
Biden commented on the tragedy by noting that he offered Governor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/j-b-pritzker">J.B. Pritzker</a> (D-IL) and Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering (D) federal support.
“Jill and I are shocked by the senseless gun violence that has yet again brought grief to an American community on this Independence Day. As always, we are grateful for the first responders and law enforcement on the scene,” Biden said in a White House <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2022/07/04/statement-from-president-biden-on-the-shooting-in-highland-park-illinois/">statement</a>. “Members of the community should follow guidance from leadership on the ground, and I will monitor closely as we learn more about those whose lives have been lost and pray for those who are in the hospital with grievous injuries.”
Biden also lauded his efforts to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/senate-passes-gun-control-bill-with-15-republicans-joining-democrats">sign</a> “the first major bipartisan gun reform legislation in almost thirty years.” Indeed, 15 Republicans in the Senate recently joined Democratic colleagues in passing a bill to fund controversial <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/gun-control-bill-advances-in-the-senate-with-help-from-14-republicans">red flag laws</a> in states and end the so-called “boyfriend loophole.”
“But there is much more work to do,” Biden added, “and I’m not going to give up fighting the epidemic of gun violence.”
A poster released by the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/fbi">FBI</a> showed that the person of interest is a white male weighing 120 pounds and standing 5’ 11” tall. With a wiry frame, the suspect has brown hair with several tattoos, including four tally marks with a line running through them on his right cheek, red rose and green leaves on his neck, and cursive script about his left eyebrow.
According to reports, the suspect had an active YouTube page operated under the handle “Awake the Rapper.” Among other disturbing videos, one post shows a pencil drawing of a person gunning down a crowd in between a montage of shots featuring the suspect backed by cinematic-like music.
The suspect&#8217;s uncle told <a href="https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/illinois-shooting-july-fourth-parade-07-04-22/index.html">CNN</a> that his nephew showed few signs of violent tendencies. “He’s a quiet kid,” the uncle said. “He’s usually on his own. He’s a lonely, quiet person. He keeps everything to himself.”

Days earlier, an attacker who subscribed to extremist racial ideology <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/shooter-kills-10-wounds-three-in-buffalo-grocery-store-authorities-investigating-as-racially-motivated-attack">killed</a> ten people in a <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/buffalo">Buffalo</a>, New York, grocery store.

Crowds scattered on Monday night as an active shooter disrupted Philadelphia&#8217;s July Fourth celebration, Party on the Parkway, injuring two police officers.
According to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/philadelphia-2-police-officers-shot-fourth-july">news reports</a>, the shooting happened just after the fireworks display got underway, around 10 p.m. local time. Witnesses say the shots came from the area in front of the Art Museum, and two police officers were hit. Subsequent reports stated that the officers are in stable condition following the shooting — but no arrests have yet been made and the suspect has not been publicly identified.

Action News, Philadelphia&#8217;s ABC affiliate (WPVI) <a href="https://6abc.com/police-offier-shot-ben-franklin-parkway-shooting-investigation-4th-of-july/12018760/">reported</a>, &#8220;Police say a Philadelphia officer assigned to highway patrol sustained a graze wound to the head. A second officer assigned to Montgomery County Bomb Squad sustained a gunshot wound to the right shoulder. That officer was there to assist Philadelphia police, as officers from surrounding counties often do during large events in the city.&#8221;

Monday evening&#8217;s <a href="https://www.visitphilly.com/things-to-do/events/july-4th-festival-concert-and-fireworks/#party-on-the-parkway">Party on the Parkway</a> — which included a free concert featuring Jason DeRulo, AvaMax, and Tori Kelly in addition to the fireworks display — was supposed to be the grand finale of the annual <a href="https://welcomeamerica.com/about/">Welcome America</a> celebration. Welcome America sixteen days of family-friendly programming that began on June 19th — in order to incorporate Juneteenth into the celebration of freedom and liberty — and ended July 4th.
According to a report from Fox News, the 2022 Welcome America celebration was the first since COVID-related lockdowns shuttered a number of large gatherings in early spring of 2020 — and some 100,000 people were expected to attend.
Pennsylvania Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta (D), who represents northern Philadelphia&#8217;s 181st District, responded to the shooting on Twitter.
&#8220;We shouldn’t have to live like this. Family after family and community after community forced to live with the gut wrenching pain of gun violence. I’m absolutely gutted by the reports of a shooting tonight in the Philadelphia Art Museum area during the July 4th concert,&#8221; he said.

An Independence Day celebration turned into a deadly <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/shooting-sends-4th-of-july-parade-into-chaos-multiple-feared-injured-or-dead/">mass shooting</a> on Monday in Highland Park, Illinois, which left at least six people dead and 30 others hospitalized, leading to authorities identifying and <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/person-of-interest-named-in-july-4-parade-massacre-in-highland-park/">arresting</a> a 21-year-old suspect.
Previous articles included the suspect&#8217;s name because he was still at large, but due to The Daily Wire&#8217;s policy against publishing the names of mass shooters, his name will be redacted in all future stories.
The suspect opened fire from a suburban Chicago rooftop that sent hundreds of parade-goers fleeing the scene leaving behind personal belongings like chairs, strollers, and bicycles, police said.
&#8220;This was very random, very intentional, and a very sad day,&#8221; Sgt. Christopher Covelli, of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force, during a press update.
Police recovered a &#8220;high-powered rifle&#8221; on the unsecured rooftop of a local business.
Before authorities took the suspect into custody, he was considered armed and dangerous until FBI agents spotted him at home in Highwood, Illinois, where neighbors said he lives with his family.
A poster released by the FBI said the person of interest is a white male weighing 120 pounds and standing 5&#8217;11&#8221; tall. With a thin frame, the suspect also has brown hair with several tattoos, including four tally marks with a line running through them on his right cheek, red rose and green leaves on his neck, and cursive script about his left eyebrow.
According to reports, the suspect had a YouTube page under the handle &#8220;Awake the Rapper.&#8221; One <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%22Robert%20%22Bobby%22%20E.%20Crimo%20III%22&amp;src=trend_click&amp;pt=1544107635644973056&amp;vertical=trends">video</a> that has raised Twitter users&#8217; eyebrows shows a pencil drawing of a person gunning down a crowd in between a montage of shots featuring the suspect backed by cinematic-like music.
<a href="https://thepostmillennial.com/haunting-youtube-video-featuring-suspect-appears-to-warn-of-highland-park-july-4-mass-shooting-attack?utm_campaign=64483">The Post Millennial</a> recovered a second video allegedly from the suspect where he recites a poem that frequently repeats he is &#8220;like a sleepwalker&#8221; that &#8220;can&#8217;t be stopped.&#8221;
The post has been taken down since the time of his arrest.
Photo evidence on <a href="https://twitter.com/TheInsiderPaper/status/1544107902578724864?s=20&amp;t=ueIe9Urh6UQbplkC02K_1g">social media</a> displays law enforcement holding the suspect wearing a black long-sleeve shirt, a red undershirt, and black pants, handcuffed and held face-down on the ground.
Other documentation of the suspect shows him wearing a Trump flag around his neck, wearing a black hat with FBI embroidered in white, and smoking Camel cigarettes. He can also be seen at a Trump parade, where he was <a href="https://twitter.com/JennywasJenny/status/1544126657191198720">dressed</a> like &#8220;Waldo&#8221; from the &#8220;Where&#8217;s Waldo&#8221; cartoon book series.
However, a Twitter <a href="https://twitter.com/stillgray/status/1544113113724698624">account</a> using the alleged suspect&#8217;s artist name scrolls through what posts he &#8220;liked&#8221; on the platform — most of which indicate support for arresting Trump supporters who protested the results of the 2020 Presidential Election and rioted at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
One of the Highland Park shooting suspect&#8217;s uncles told <a href="https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/illinois-shooting-july-fourth-parade-07-04-22/index.html">CNN</a> his nephew showed no warning signs that would lead him to believe he would become a mass shooter.
He told CNN he never saw him engage in any violence or concerning behavior, adding he was unaware of his nephew&#8217;s political views.
&#8220;He&#8217;s a quiet kid,&#8221; he said. &#8220;He&#8217;s usually on his own. He&#8217;s a lonely, quiet person. He keeps everything to himself.&#8221;
CNN reported that the suspect lives in an apartment behind the house owned by his father. To his uncle&#8217;s knowledge, he never saw the suspect with friends at his apartment.
The suspect&#8217;s uncle reportedly told CNN his nephew wasn&#8217;t working, though he worked at Panera Bread before the COVID pandemic.
The uncle also said the suspect was active on YouTube.
He saw his nephew on Sunday night for the last time when he was sitting on a recliner in the house, looking at his computer.
&#8220;Everything was as normal,&#8221; he said.
Social media users have also <a href="https://twitter.com/LouAye_/status/1544112537578373120">posted</a> the suspect&#8217;s last Facebook post from May 29, 2021, which says, &#8220;You&#8217;re all sinners.&#8221;
A previous version of this article said the suspect is 22-years-old. He is 21-years-old.

For the segment, among others, Inskeep spoke with Harvard historian Jill Lepore — who explained that Thomas Jefferson drew from enlightenment thinkers when he wrote the concept of equality into the Declaration.
&#8220;It’s fashionable, and rightfully so, to indict the limits of [Jefferson’s] vision. But in the 18th century, even the idea that all white men are created equal was a radical notion at the time,&#8221; Lepore explained. &#8220;Those men lived in a highly ranked culture, and a declaration of equality is throwing that away, or challenging that in a revolutionary manner.&#8221;
Inskeep tied the conversation to recent heated political battles, applying the concept of equality to the recently-overturned landmark abortion case Roe v. Wade. &#8220;And many of our debates on this July 4th turn on what equality means. What voting rules really give equal access to the ballot. Do abortion laws give a woman equal control of her body? At what point is a fetus entitled to equal rights?&#8221; he asked.
He went on to suggest that Republicans were behind a push for &#8220;unequal voting power,&#8221; adding, &#8220;For some people equality is out of style. Some political progressives prefer the term, &#8216;equity.&#8217; Some Republicans in Texas and Colorado have called for unequal voting power, giving more weight to conservative voters. The global move toward authoritarian rule opposes equality, asserting that some people are more equal than others.&#8221;

An eyewitness recounted the horrific scene at Monday&#8217;s Highland Park parade celebrating Independence Day, telling CNN that she had watched as a young girl was shot to death in the street.
The witness, who introduced herself to CNN&#8217;s Adrienne Broaduss as only &#8220;Zoe,&#8221; explained that she and her father had arrived early to watch the pet parade and the children&#8217;s parade first — and she said that when the <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/shooting-sends-4th-of-july-parade-into-chaos-multiple-feared-injured-or-dead/">shooting first started</a>, a number of people had believed it was fireworks or some other part of the planned festivities.

&#8220;You know, a little after the band went through, we heard pew-pew-pew, probably heard 50 rounds in total, at least,&#8221; Zoe described the moment the chaos began. &#8220;Everyone thought it was fireworks. Everyone said, oh, fireworks and the military people had just gone through with the shotguns, and I was like, something is wrong. I grabbed my dad and started running.&#8221;
&#8220;All of a sudden everyone behind us started running. I looked back, probably 20 feet away from me, I saw a girl shot and killed. The girl I&#8217;ve heard on the news with — in blood — I saw her die. I’ve never seen anything like this,&#8221; she continued.
Zoe went on to say that she and her father had found a dumpster to hide behind — and they had stayed there until police came to take them to the basement of a nearby sporting goods store.
&#8220;We hid there until the cops finally escorted us back to our car. They were wonderful, they drove us back to our car. I mean, I think there were people that we were hiding with, one man had been shot in the head, his ear, he was bleeding all over his face, and he was, like, I’m just happy that’s all happened. There was another girl that got escorted out that was shot in the leg,&#8221; Zoe added. &#8220;We were hiding in the basement for quite a while. We were right in the center. I mean, someone, 20 feet away, you know, someone — and then we went back to get our car keys and we saw the streets were quite littered. It looked like a battle zone and it’s disgusting.&#8221;
&#8220;It is disgusting and hearts are hurting knowing that that’s what you witnessed, that’s the image in your mind on this Fourth of July,&#8221; Broaduss agreed, going on to note that according to the additional reporting, a total of six people had died — and two dozen more had been injured. The suspect, she revealed, was an 18-20 year-old white male — and she said that a rifle had been recovered by law enforcement.
&#8220;A rifle &#8230; no, no, it was an automatic weapon,&#8221; Zoe replied, insisting that she had heard gunshots before and &#8220;rifles don&#8217;t do that.&#8221;

Following protests on Sunday night in Akron, Ohio, over the death of<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-akron-police-release-bodycam-footage-of-chase-that-led-to-jayland-walkers-shooting"> Jayland Walker</a>, who police killed last week after allegedly leading them on a chase and shooting at them, city officials on Monday canceled the Fourth of July fireworks show, set a curfew, and declared a state of emergency.
&#8220;Early yesterday, we had several peaceful protests in the downtown footprint related to the officer-involved shooting of Jayland Walker,&#8221; Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan (D) said in a <a href="https://www.akronohio.gov/cms/news/05f7ee4736b043a6/index.html">statement</a>.
&#8220;These protests did not escalate to violence and destruction.&#8221;
Horrigan thanked the protestors and reiterated he fully supports Akron residents&#8217; right to peacefully assemble, which he and other community leaders urged protesters to do since police released video footage of Walker&#8217;s death on Sunday.
&#8220;However,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;As night fell and others began to join, the protests became no longer peaceful.&#8221;
Downtown Akron experienced significant property damage with rioters breaking windows on small businesses on the city&#8217;s main drag.
&#8220;We cannot and will not tolerate violence or the destruction of property,&#8221; Horrigan said. &#8220;In light of the damage that has occurred and in order to preserve peace in our community, I have declared a state of emergency, implemented a curfew, and canceled the fireworks which were scheduled for tonight.&#8221;
City officials issued a curfew for downtown Akron from 9:00 p.m. through 6:00 a.m., which remains in effect until officials issue another order or lift the existing one. However, city authorities, news media, and authorized personnel are exempt from such orders. Those traveling to and from work, seeking medical care, or feeling dangerous circumstances are exempt from the city-issued emergency orders.
Three separate firework shows scheduled for tonight to celebrate America&#8217;s 246th year of independence in downtown Akron, The Patterson Sports Complex, and the Akron Fulton airport were all canceled tonight due to the state of emergency.
The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/akron-officials-cancel-fourth-of-july-celebrations-amid-ongoing-protests-for-jayland-walker">announcement</a> comes after Horrigan canceled the city&#8217;s annual Fourth of July Rib, White, &amp; Blue Festival, scheduled to run through the holiday weekend. The festival was set to return this year after three years of hiatus since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Journalist and Author Andy Ngô shared a series of video footage on Monday of Akron&#8217;s riots on <a href="https://twitter.com/MrAndyNgo/status/1543985807882522624">Twitter</a>.
&#8220;Overnight on July 3, violent far-left &amp; #BLM rioters gathered in downtown Akron, Ohio with bats &amp; started fires,&#8221; Ngô wrote. &#8220;They&#8217;re angry about the police shooting death of #JaylandWalker, an armed black man who led police on a wild car chase &amp; shooting at them.&#8221;
On June 27, Akron authorities said they pursued Walker because the car he drove was involved in a crime the previous day. After refusing to stop, speeding through a residential neighborhood, and shooting at officers, Walker jumped out of the car in motion at a barricade.
Police said they fired up to 60 bullets at Walker after he jumped out of the moving vehicle and shot at the officers.
Although he did not have the gun with him as he ran, Police Chief Stephen Mylett said the video showed Walker reaching for something at his waist and turning as he ran, prompting the police to fire.
The Beacon Journal obtained an investigative worksheet by the medical examiner&#8217;s office, which reported officers shot Walker in the face, torso, and upper legs.
The report and video from the crime scene confirmed that Walker had a handgun in his silver Buick. The Akron Fraternal Order of Police said in a statement that traffic cameras had captured a muzzle flash from Walker&#8217;s car and that a shell casing had been found from the same location.
&#8220;This incident is a tragedy for our entire community, including the family of Jayland Walker, as well as all of the officers involved,&#8221; the Akron FOP said. &#8220;Many officers work their entire career without discharging their weapon. A split-second decision to use lethal force is one that every police officer hopes he or she will never be forced to make.&#8221;
The Akron chapter of the NAACP planned a march and rally downtown Sunday afternoon to coincide with the release of videos. Bobby DiCello, an attorney for Walker&#8217;s family, called the video &#8220;brutal.&#8221;
&#8220;It&#8217;s going to stir up some passion. It&#8217;s going to make people uneasy,&#8221; DiCello said ahead of the video&#8217;s release.

Chestnut, 38, finished the event scarfing down 63 hot dogs in 10 minutes, beating out his next closest competitor by a full 20 dogs, according to <a href="https://theathletic.com/news/joey-chestnut-wins-nathans-hot-dog-contest/1ahPdS7Op1gl/">The Athletic</a>. Making his feat even more impressive, Chestnut won the vaunted Mustard Belt after grabbing a protester by the neck and throwing him down when the disruptor made his way on stage mid-contest.

Chestnut’s win marks his 15th Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest victory in 16 years in an undeniable tour de force in the sport of competitive eating. His mark of 63 hot dogs fell far short of his world-record-setting performance at last year’s contest when he finished 76 within 10 minutes.
Chestnut competed with a tendon injury in his leg, surprising fans on Friday when he showed up to the event&#8217;s official weigh-in on crutches and wearing a medical boot.
Miki Sudo, an eight-time Nathan’s champion, won the women’s division held on Sunday, according to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/07/04/joey-chestnut-wins-15th-nathans-hot-dog-eating-contest/">New York Post</a>.
The annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest returned to its usual venue at Nathan’s in Coney Island, Brooklyn, this year for the first time since 2019.
“It’s beautiful to be back here,” Chestnut told <a href="https://www.espn.com/espn/story/_/id/34193679/joey-jaws-chestnut-slowed-injury-captures-15th-fourth-july-hot-dog-eating-contest-title-eating-63-franks-buns">ESPN</a> in front of a crowd of supporters. The hot dog-eating legend said his injury slowed him down the stretch.
&#8220;It hurts, but I was in the zone for a little bit. I was ignoring it,” Chestnut said before the pain became too much and began to interfere with his eating.
Neighborhood resident Joe Manny celebrated the return of the event as a return to “normal” after the 2020 pandemic.
“I would always come to Coney Island every Fourth of July for this competition so being back in person as we emerge from the pandemic feels great because I didn’t think the world would get back to normal,” he told the Post.

Several cities across the United States are delaying or canceling <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/4th-of-july">Fourth of July</a> fireworks shows due to widespread <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/supply-chain">supply chain</a> issues, according to a report from <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/fourth-of-july-fireworks-may-not-happen-on-july-fourth-11656541201?mod=hp_lead_pos13">The Wall Street Journal</a>.
The city of Ottawa, <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/kansas">Kansas</a>, is rescheduling its show for the day before Labor Day because the fireworks ordered in February are stranded in a ship bound from <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/china">China</a>. “We hate to break tradition,” Tiffany Evans, who co-chairs the city’s festival, told the outlet. “Even though it’s out of our control, it feels like we’re letting the community down.”
COVID <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/apple-shifts-ipad-manufacturing-away-from-china-due-to-harsh-covid-lockdowns">lockdowns</a> closed manufacturing facilities and logistics hubs across the world as the virus began to spread. By the end of 2021, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/supply-chain-crisis-worsens-number-of-ships-off-california-coast-hits-new-record">hundreds of shipping vessels</a> carrying thousands of containers were stranded off the <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/california">California</a> coast as the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach struggled to keep up with demand. Persistent lockdowns in China and other Asian economies continue to limit the availability of consumer goods in the United States — a factor behind rising <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/inflation">inflationary</a> pressures.
<a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/phoenix">Phoenix</a>, <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/arizona">Arizona</a>, canceled its shows altogether due to a lack of fireworks, while <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/minneapolis">Minneapolis</a>, <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/minnesota">Minnesota</a>, nixed its celebration because there were not enough workers to secure the site from which the fireworks were supposed to launch.
Some cities are keeping their shows during the holiday weekend, yet rescheduling from the Fourth of July because of a deficit of people available to run the pyrotechnics. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/fairfax-county">Fairfax</a>, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/virginia">Virginia</a>, is delaying its show by one day, while Fountain Hills, Arizona, will run its display on the first of the month.
“A lot of these shooters, they could be doctors or dentists by day, and for two days a year they’re a pyrotechnician who’s shooting a firework show,” National Fireworks Association President Steve Houser told The Wall Street Journal, noting that many people avoid getting their licenses because of “hassle” involved with professional training and clearances with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/firearms-and-explosives-atf">ATF</a>).
Though the agency does not regulate consumer fireworks, federal law <a href="https://www.atf.gov/explosives/fireworks-safety-and-security#:~:text=The%20regulations%20at%2027%20CFR,ATF%20for%20the%20specific%20activity.">requires</a> that any person receiving “display fireworks” must obtain an explosives license or permit “for the specific activity.”
Beyond fireworks, other economic challenges are placing a damper on celebrations. According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, the average cost of a Fourth of July <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/last-year-biden-bragged-about-16-cents-in-fourth-of-july-cookout-savings-this-year-prices-rose-by-double-digits">summer cookout</a> for a party of 10 is currently $69.68 — 17% higher since last year. Prices for barbecue staples such as chicken breasts, pork chops, potato salad, lemonade, and hamburger buns are more elevated than last year.
