Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is many things: a radical progressive, a viable presidential candidate, a former bartender, and apparently, America’s foremost revisionist historian. Last week she graced the country with a bombshell revelation, informing us all that it was black Americans who created democracy:
<blockquote>I think about the Civil Rights and voting rights movement, and how black Americans really created democracy in this country… black Americans created democracy. They built something from nothing. </blockquote>
I had no idea. I was under the naive impression that it was the ancient Greeks and our Founding Fathers who conjured such a thing, but clearly I was the last to know. Even the podcast host, whom she was enlightening, nodded along in vigorous agreement: “Yes, YES.” Where have I been all these years?
There you have it, folks. The 1619 Project rides again. History has been rewritten, you’ve been lied to your entire life, and James Madison was apparently mixed. Unless, of course, AOC hit her head falling out of a coconut tree and is simply, resoundingly, and spectacularly wrong.
Let’s take a stroll down history lane.
Democracy literally comes from the ancient Greek word dēmokratia: “rule by the people,&#8221; from dēmos meaning &#8220;the people&#8221; or &#8220;citizen-body,&#8221; and kratos for &#8220;power&#8221; or &#8220;rule.” <a href="https://www.abrahamlincolnonline.org/lincoln/speeches/gettysburg.htm">By the people, for the people</a>. Sound familiar? It describes a system in which citizens hold the power to make decisions, either directly or through their elected representatives. 
In 508-507 BC, the true “Father of Democracy,” Cleisthenes, shifted power away from hereditary elites and toward the demos. He reorganized citizens into tribes based on residence rather than bloodline, introduced equality under the law, and reformed governance through popular voting. Long after his death, the historian Thucydides praised the system: “Its administration favors the many instead of the few; this is why it is called a democracy.”
Credit for the creation of democracy goes to white, ancient Greek aristocrats. My apologies, Congresswoman.
If AOC means American democracy specifically, she’s no less mistaken. American democracy wasn’t “built from nothing” by any single group or era. It was deliberately engineered as a constitutional republic with robust democratic features during the late 18th century. Drawing on ancient Athens and Rome, English common law, and Enlightenment thinkers including John Locke, Montesquieu, and Blackstone, our Founders designed a republic specifically intended to avoid the pitfalls of pure direct democracy. As Madison argued in <a href="https://billofrightsinstitute.org/primary-sources/federalist-no-10/">Federalist No. 10</a>, this often resulted in mob rule and instability.
In its place, they built representative government, separation of powers, checks and balances, and federalism, all to protect individual liberty.
This architecture did not spring up overnight. In 1620, the Mayflower Compact established a framework in which settlers agreed to &#8220;combine ourselves together into a civil body politic&#8221; and make &#8220;just and equal laws&#8221; by majority consent, planting the seed of consensual self-governance on American soil. Over a century later, on July 4th, 1776, the Declaration of Independence proclaimed that “all men are created equal,” endowed with unalienable rights from God, not government, and that we have the right to rule ourselves. This culmination came at what historians have rightly called the <a href="https://www.constitutionfacts.com/us-constitution-amendments/the-constitutional-convention/">“Miracle at Philadelphia,”</a> where 55 delegates, including Madison and Washington, met in secret at the Pennsylvania State House and hammered out the most consequential governing document in human history. Popular sovereignty, elected representatives, separation of powers, checks and balances, and federalism all took final form under the tutelage of the evil, non-pigmented caucasian.
Just as it would be inaccurate to say women alone created American democracy, it is equally inaccurate to say black Americans did because it is simply not true. Unless Washington and the Founders were applying considerably more face powder than the portraits suggest.
I was reminded of all this just last night at an Independent Women’s event, where extraordinary women gathered to celebrate and defend exactly this history. That’s the spirit we need more of: women, Americans of all backgrounds, who know what this country is built on and aren’t afraid to say so. We should be teaching this, not erasing it.
To be uncharacteristically charitable to AOC, one could argue that she means that black Americans, through the crucible of slavery, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and the Civil Rights Movement, helped make the promise of democracy real rather than merely rhetorical. Indeed, black Americans&#8217; contributions to expanding rights were immense and undeniable, but &#8220;expanding and perfecting democracy&#8221; is a very different claim from &#8220;creating it from nothing,&#8221; and conflating the two isn&#8217;t empowerment, it’s historical erasure. This revisionist framing flattens a complex, centuries-long story into a single-group morality tale, where one group’s activism gets sole credit for everything good.
Meanwhile, that very democracy she claims was created by black Americans is being thwarted by her and her fellow Democrats in Washington, D.C. Barack Obama wants to strip away the voting rights of Republicans of all color, and they’ve promised that when they regain power, they will pack the Supreme Court, enable mass mail-in-ballots, throw away voter ID, and nuke the filibuster to add four more blue senate seats. 
These are not the actions of people who revere democratic institutions. They’re the actions of people who revere power.
The danger of letting the Left rewrite history and promote fallacious ideas is not abstract. When young people and useful idiots are taught a distorted version of the past by a backward education system and p(regressive) leadership, they have no framework to defend what is true. That’s been the design. Gutting civics and history education was not an accident; it was a strategy.
Our Founders studied history with rigor, absorbed its lessons, and built something incredible and new: a durable, liberty-focused republic that has endured for nearly 250 years. Its genius lay not in perfection but in self-correction through elections, courts, and amendments, not reinvention.
Don’t fall for the lies: communism has failed everywhere it has been tried, Capitalism harnesses human self-interest to drive innovation, growth, and prosperity like no other, and our constitutional republic is a miraculous achievement, conceived by a very pale founding bunch and hardened over generations by Americans of different color and circumstance, bound under one creed.
That’s not an uncomfortable fact; that’s a beautiful one, and as we approach our 250th birthday, it is one worth defending clearly and without apology.
So thank you, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, for yet another opportunity to do exactly that.

I have released enough documentaries over the years to recognize an emerging pattern in terms of how the Left will respond. There are really only two options: Either they&#8217;ll ignore my documentary entirely (which is how most of the media responded to &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/videos/am-i-racist?elementPosition=0&amp;row=13&amp;rowHeadline=Comedy+%26+Entertainment&amp;rowType=Portrait+Show+Carousel">Am I Racist?,</a>&#8221; even though it was the top documentary of the decade). Or, in the alternative, they&#8217;ll publish extremely low-effort, highly dishonest articles, where they review some imaginary version of my documentary, put words into my mouth, and take every important scene out of context.
That was the case with &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/videos/what-is-a-woman?elementPosition=1&amp;row=13&amp;rowHeadline=Comedy+%26+Entertainment&amp;rowType=Portrait+Show+Carousel">What is a Woman?</a>,&#8221; when outlet after outlet accused me of being a &#8220;transphobe&#8221; who engaged in &#8220;hate speech&#8221; — even though 99% of the movie involved me asking basic, straightforward questions to self-described experts in gender ideology. And the other 1% was me asking why those experts were running away from me instead of answering my simple and straightforward questions.
So based on these experiences, when I released the first episode of my newest series at the Daily Wire, which is called &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/show/real-history-with-matt-walsh?elementPosition=2&amp;row=6&amp;rowHeadline=Featured&amp;rowType=Portrait+Show+Carousel">Real History</a>,&#8221; I was expecting either a total media blackout, or a flood of desperate hit pieces. After all, &#8220;Real History&#8221; is a direct challenge to some of the most important tenets of modern Leftism. 
But interestingly enough, &#8220;Real History&#8221; has not been met with a total media blackout. Nor has it been bombarded with a series of incredibly dumb and lazy smears. Instead, aside from a small number of YouTube videos from historians — which have mostly been positive, and very thorough — the only mainstream response to &#8220;Real History&#8221; has come from The Atlantic magazine, which considers itself to be the bastion of Left-wing intellectual thought.

And right away, that got my attention. It&#8217;s not that The Atlantic is a trustworthy outlet. It&#8217;s obviously not. In fact, they&#8217;ve created numerous high-level hoaxes in just the past couple of years, solely to influence elections. But at the same time, if The Atlantic — and only The Atlantic — is coming after you, then it means you&#8217;ve done something unique. It means that you&#8217;ve rattled the people who, in elite circles of the Democrat Party, are taken very seriously. Now, why might &#8220;Real History&#8221; have done that?
To answer that question, let&#8217;s see what <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/02/slavery-matt-walsh-1619-project/685982/">The Atlantic says</a>, specifically.
<blockquote>Matt Walsh would like you to know you’ve been lied to. Last month, the right-wing provocateur appeared on Megyn Kelly’s show to discuss his new video series, Real History With Matt Walsh. &#8230; In Walsh’s account, the left believes that “America was built on slavery, and it has no right to exist, and every white American carries, somehow, that legacy, that guilt in their blood”; therefore progressives feel they have the “moral justification to just do whatever they want” to white people. Walsh intends to stop this. So in Real History, he relentlessly downplays the brutality of slavery in the United States. Sanitizing slavery has become a core objective of the reactionary right under Donald Trump—a malignant response to the progressive left’s oversimplification of American history for their own present-day ends. But the truest understanding of slavery doesn’t serve any political faction. Rather, it acknowledges the horrors of racial oppression while still allowing us to see beyond them. &#8230; Walsh also notes that the descendants of Africans trafficked to what became the United States are now in better socioeconomic shape than those whose ancestors remained in the Old World or were transported to Latin America or the Caribbean. He draws an odious conclusion from this—American slavery wasn’t that bad—yet the point is not entirely incorrect. Other far more serious thinkers have made versions of it too.</blockquote>
There&#8217;s the sneering that you might expect from The Atlantic. They want you to know that there are &#8220;far more serious thinkers&#8221; than I am. But for all their preening and all their arrogance, it&#8217;s clear that the author of this piece, Thomas Chatterton Williams, has not even watched <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/episode/rhs-260118?elementPosition=0&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+Show+Episodes+Carousel">Episode 1,</a> &#8220;The Real History of Slavery.&#8221; He couldn&#8217;t be bothered to spend the hour to actually watch the show.
And I can make that claim with confidence, because there is absolutely nothing in the episode — or any episode of the series — that &#8220;relentlessly downplays the brutality of slavery in the United States.&#8221; Instead, the episode is a roughly hour-long look at what slavery entailed, all over the world. And yes, as a matter of historical fact, Africans and the Barbary Pirates and the Ottomans generally treated their slaves far, far worse than Americans and American colonists. Americans weren&#8217;t known for floating canoes in the blood of their slaves, for example. Nor were Americans known for sailing thousands of miles away in order to snatch men, women and children from their homes, throw them onto boats, and sexually assault them. That&#8217;s not &#8220;downplaying&#8221; anything. It&#8217;s the truth. And &#8220;serious thinkers&#8221; — to use The Atlantic&#8217;s terminology — care about the truth, above all else.
But The Atlantic doesn&#8217;t care about the truth. That&#8217;s why, in 2019, they published an article <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/12/historians-clash-1619-project/604093/">entitled</a>, &#8220;The Fight Over the 1619 Project Is Not About the Facts.&#8221;
What&#8217;s remarkable about this headline is that, indeed, the fight over the 1619 Project was about the facts. All of the history was completely wrong — including their claim that Americans fought the Revolutionary War to preserve slavery. But The Atlantic ran cover for the 1619 Project at the time, because it served the narrative of the Democrat Party. It advanced racial grievances, which they saw — correctly, for a time — as a pathway to power.
The point of &#8220;Real History,&#8221; on the other hand, is not to advance the interests of the &#8220;MAGA movement,&#8221; or anyone else. The point is to communicate historically accurate information that&#8217;s deliberately hidden from us, at every stage in our lives. Schools don&#8217;t talk about it. The media doesn&#8217;t talk about it. Movies don&#8217;t talk about it. Telling the truth is not &#8220;downplaying&#8221; anything. By contrast, it&#8217;s the fake intellectuals in the Left, people like the writers at The Atlantic, who have been downplaying the reality of the African and Ottoman slave trades for generations.

But according to The Atlantic, so-called &#8220;MAGA revisionists,&#8221; along with the Trump administration, are the problem here. 
So let&#8217;s read on from <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/02/slavery-matt-walsh-1619-project/685982/">their review</a> of &#8220;Real History.&#8221;
<blockquote>Back in March, [Trump] strong-armed a host of institutions by issuing an executive order called “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History,” which directs federally funded museums, monuments, and parks to remove materials that promote “corrosive ideology.” Last month, the park service obliged, eliminating an outdoor exhibit at Independence National Historical Park, in Philadelphia, where George Washington’s house once stood. The exhibit honored nine slaves who toiled at the residence &#8230; Trump and his allies seem unwilling to tolerate virtually any acknowledgment that America subjugated Black people. Rather than making a dispassionate case against the idea that the country was founded to enslave Africans, MAGA is taking down plaques commemorating basic facts, such as Washington’s slaveholding. In Real History, Walsh turns the clock back further still.</blockquote>
Notice the sleight of hand here. 
They&#8217;re strongly implying that the Trump administration ordered the park service to remove an exhibit about the fact that George Washington owned slaves. But that&#8217;s actually not true. If you read the Executive Order, it orders the parks service to remove anything promoting a &#8220;corrosive ideology&#8221; that demonizes Americans. And as The Washington Post reported, the parks service interpreted that Executive Order as broadly as possible. It&#8217;s a form of &#8220;malicious compliance.&#8221; 
The Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2025/09/15/national-parks-slavery-information-removal/">reported:</a>
<blockquote>the removals were in line with President Donald Trump’s March executive order directing the Interior Department to eliminate information that reflects a “corrosive ideology” that disparages historic Americans. National Park Service officials are broadly interpreting that directive to apply to information on racism, sexism, slavery, gay rights or persecution of Indigenous people.</blockquote>
See how that works?
The Trump administration issues an order, telling agencies to stop advancing an anti-white, anti-American agenda. Democrats then remove displays of slavery. And then Democrats say, &#8220;Hey, you made us remove displays of slavery!&#8221;
And by the way, it&#8217;s especially ironic that they lump &#8220;Real History&#8221; in with this. Again, if this guy had watched the show — which he clearly hasn&#8217;t — he&#8217;d know that we talk, at some length, about Washington&#8217;s slaves. And in particular, we talk about his white indentured servants, who ran away around the time of the start of the Revolutionary War. Washington put out advertisements, seeking the return of these white runaways. And there were many more white runaways than black runaways at Washington&#8217;s estate. But no one at The Atlantic wants to talk about this, because it complicates their narrative that only blacks were victimized by slavery in America. So they hide the truth, and then they accuse us of being the liars.
What&#8217;s funny about all of this is that, back in 2019, The Atlantic put out an article stating that &#8220;reparations&#8221; could mean &#8220;telling the truth&#8221; about uncomfortable historical facts. So in that sense, you&#8217;d think they&#8217;d be happy about Real History. You&#8217;d think they&#8217;d consider it a form of reparations. Apparently not. 
In reality, The Atlantic, like so many other bastions of Left-wing &#8220;intellectualism,&#8221; is collapsing in on itself. Their ideology is incoherent. They have no idea what they stand for, or how to construct even the most basic argument about anything they believe in.
This is a big, big problem for the Left in general.

Editor’s Note: This is the fifth and final installment in the series “American Maoists: Warnings From The Cultural Revolution.”

Today, the authors look to the future, and explore how radical leftist movements rewrite history, not just to justify their actions and demonize the cultures they want to destroy, but to change how people think about their past, present, and future.

Every nation lives by its landmarks. These are not merely dates on a calendar, but signposts dividing history into “before” and “after.” They anchor collective memory and shape how a people understand themselves.
For Americans, the great landmarks have long been clear: 1492, the discovery of the New World; 1776, independence; 1861, the Civil War; 1929, the Great Depression; 1964, the Civil Rights Act. To speak of “before” and “after” these events is to tell the story of a nation striving toward freedom, law, and self-government.
In recent years, however, new landmarks have been imposed by ideological fiat. The most striking is the New York Times’s 1619 Project, which declared that America began not in 1776 but in the year enslaved Africans first arrived in Virginia. With that shift, the axis of history moved: “before and after independence” became “before and after slavery.” Liberty and law were redefined as hypocrisy and oppression. More dividing lines quickly followed: before and after Jim Crow, before and after George Floyd, and so on.
These changes are not merely academic. When the Chinese Communist Party seized power in 1949, it imposed a single ultimate landmark: “before liberation” and “after liberation.” Five thousand years of recorded history were collapsed into a morality tale. Everything before was painted as darkness; everything after as light. The word liberation itself became a judgment on every person and institution. Those who had prospered before were condemned, often destroyed.
The CCP has never ceased wielding this powerful weapon to manufacture historic milestones. After the disastrous Mao era, it crafted yet another milestone by dividing its own history into ‘before Reform and Opening-Up’ and ‘after.’ The Mao years were rebranded as ‘decades of arduous exploration’ in search of a better China, erasing the atrocities that claimed tens of millions of lives.
The post-Mao period, by contrast, is exalted as the Party’s crowning achievement: lifting the Chinese people out of poverty and transforming China into an economic superpower. And the ultimate aim? To enshrine the CCP as the eternal liberator of the Chinese people. This is not just propaganda but a wholesale transformation of society. History was rewritten, language reshaped, culture remade. The “before” was demonized; the “after” glorified. Ordinary people adopted the new vocabulary, willingly or not. And once language changed, thought and memory changed too. The Chinese people, once bound by a magnificent civilization, were divided into “good” and “bad” classes — oppressors and oppressed, loyalists and enemies. Hatred of the designated groups was not just tolerated but demanded.
America is not a one-party state. Our institutions remain democratic. Yet the project of re-framing — what might be called Cultural Marxism — has advanced here with surprising speed. The narrative of American exceptionalism, rooted in liberty, law, and individualism, has been replaced by a narrative of slavery, racism, and oppression.
The Left has shown itself to be even more cunning Cultural Marxists than the Maoists. They have redefined and “simplified” American history into a new binary: before and after. In their telling, the “before” is our present — defined solely as slavery and white oppression — rendering the Civil War irrelevant and erasing the achievements of countless Black Americans, including Barack Obama. The “after,” meanwhile, exists only in the future. And how is that future to be reached? By dismantling the entire system, which they insist is built on racism, bigotry, and injustice. 
History’s landmarks are never neutral. They can unite or divide, elevate or diminish. To say “before independence” and “after independence” is to conceive of ourselves as citizens — free, equal, and striving for self-rule. To say “before slavery” and “after slavery” is to fix identity forever in terms of bondage and resentment. One story moves toward freedom; the other freezes us in grievance.
Nations cannot thrive on grievance. A shared history, however imperfect, is the glue that binds generations. To rewrite that history into a tale of villains and victims is to dissolve the glue.
The real question is whether we will continue to allow new landmarks to redefine us. Will we pass on to our children the story of a free people, equal under God, struggling but advancing toward justice? Or will we hand them a fractured narrative that teaches them to see one another as permanent enemies?
History is never only about the past. It frames the future. What we choose as our “before” and “after” will decide who we become.

&#8220;Anti-racist&#8221; author <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/clearly-a-witch-hunt-lefties-blame-racism-for-ouster-of-allegedly-plagiarizing-harvard-prez" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ibram X. Kendi</a>, &#8220;1619 Project&#8221; author Nikole Hannah-Jones, and a number of others claimed that the long-awaited exit of Harvard University President Claudine Gay was a coordinated racist attack — and the backlash was immediate.
Kendi claimed that Gay&#8217;s ouster — which came on the heels of her disastrous Capitol Hill testimony and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ap-blasted-for-article-labeling-plagiarism-as-new-conservative-weapon-in-wake-of-claudine-gay-resignation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">multiple accusations of plagiarism</a> impacting more than half of her published academic works — was the result of a &#8220;racist mob&#8221; eagerly gunning for a black woman in a position of power.
&#8220;Racist mobs won’t stop until they topple all Black people from positions of power and influence who are not reinforcing the structure of racism. Standardized testing is a controversial practice in the American public school system. Critics contend that standardized tests don&#8217;t take creativity or complex problem-solving skills into account, instead focusing solely on rote memorization. They also argue that the tests don&#8217;t serve as good predictors of future success and could be unfair to certain disadvantaged groups.
Whether those criticisms have any validity or not, they can lend some insight on the basic knowledge base of future U.S. citizens at a critical point in their education.
The U.S. history and civics tests administered by the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) last year provided one such insight: a large portion of eighth graders are woefully uninformed about the nation&#8217;s history and the workings of its government.
The <a href="https://www.nationsreportcard.gov/highlights/ushistory/2022/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">average score</a> on the eighth grade U.S. history test sunk to its lowest level since the test began in 1994. A mere 13% of students scored proficient on the test, while only 1% scored advanced. Meanwhile, 40% (4 out of 10!) of students who took the test scored below basic — up from 34% in 2018 and 29% in 2014. Overall, the average score on the test has decreased 9 points since its apex in 2014. Additionally, lower-performing students experienced a larger drop, between 6 and 7 points, compared to higher-performing students, between 3 and 5 points, from 2018 to 2022.
Average scores on particular themes in American history showed an even more drastic drop. The average score decreased 7 points on questions regarding America&#8217;s role in the world, 9 points on the themes of democracy and technology, and a whopping 11 points on questions pertaining to American culture.
The U.S. civics test <a href="https://www.nationsreportcard.gov/highlights/civics/2022/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">revealed</a> similarly disappointing results, with the test seeing its first ever drop in scores since its inception in 1998. The average score dropped 4 points from 2018 to 2022. Twenty percent of students scored proficient on the 2022 iteration of the test, and 2% scored advanced — double the percentage from the history exam. But 31% scored below basic, up from 27% in 2018.
Higher performing students saw basically no change in scores from 2018 to 2022 on the civics test, but students in the 50th percentile and lower saw a decrease of 3 points.
The news that scores have remained basically stagnant over the last several decades is punctuated by the fact that the United States <a href="https://educationdata.org/public-education-spending-statistics#:~:text=U.S.%20and%20World%20Education%20Spending&amp;text=Schools%20in%20the%20United%20States,operation%20and%20Development%20(OECD)." target="_blank" rel="noopener">maintains</a> one of the highest rates of education spending per pupil in the world.
The significant learning loss from the COVID-19 pandemic almost certainly has a part to play in 2022&#8217;s dismal numbers — scores on other subjects like math and reading have also decreased. But the drop in scores on the U.S. history test had begun way before lockdowns stunted the nation&#8217;s education system. Another partial explanation for why students&#8217; knowledge of America&#8217;s past may come from what they are being taught in their history courses.

At around the same time as history scores began to decline, critical race theory and radical gender ideology began to creep into school curricula. While CRT has seemingly infected every school subject, including seemingly non-political subjects like <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/florida-rejects-dozens-of-math-books-containing-critical-race-theory-and-other-indoctrinating-concepts" target="_blank" rel="noopener">math</a> and science, the push has been mostly concerned with reshaping students&#8217; perceptions of American history.
One of the more infamous examples of CRT infiltrating public schools was the <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/schools-1619-project-curriculum-historical-errors" target="_blank" rel="noopener">adoption</a> of NYT journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones&#8217; &#8220;1619 <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/1619-project-creator-raked-in-1m-last-year-for-college-speeches-on-inequality" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Project</a>&#8221; in several school districts across the country. The &#8220;1619 Project,&#8221; originally a series of articles published in The New York Times in 2019, posited that anti-black racism has impacted every facet of American society and that American history should be viewed through the lens of racial oppression of black people by white people. The project also asserts that the true beginning point of American history is 1619, when the first African slaves were brought to Jamestown, rather than the more traditional date of 1607, when Jamestown was established.
Though the project won a Pulitzer Prize in 2020 and scored Hannah-Jones numerous accolades and lucrative speaking engagements, it was roundly criticized by prominent historians for its numerous inaccuracies, including the assertion that the United States was founded explicitly to protect slavery and that African Americans campaigned for civil rights alone. Pulitzer Prize-winning historian James McPherson and Brown University Professor Gordon Wood were some of the most vocal critics of the project&#8217;s interpretation of American history. In fact, they joined with three other respected historians to <a href="https://www.cbs17.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/29/2021/07/NYT-1619-Letter-Bennet.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">send</a> a letter to the NYT lambasting the project&#8217;s mistakes and mischaracterizations in December 2019.
&#8220;We are dismayed at some of the factual errors in the project and the closed process behind it. These errors, which concern major events, cannot be described as interpretation or &#8216;framing.&#8217; They are matters of verifiable fact, which are the foundation of honest scholarship and honest journalism,&#8221; the letter said.
Soon after it was released, the Pulitzer Center <a href="https://www.educationnext.org/1619-project-enters-american-classrooms-adding-new-sizzle-slavery-significant-cost/#:~:text=Schools%20or%20school%20districts%20in,3%2C500%20classrooms%20used%20the%20materials." target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> in May 2020 that more than 3,500 classrooms had used materials related to the &#8220;1619 Project.&#8221; And that number has only grown — Fox News <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/schools-1619-project-curriculum-historical-errors" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> in April 2022 that over 4,000 educators were using the materials in their classrooms.
City Journal <a href="https://www.city-journal.org/article/yes-critical-race-theory-is-being-taught-in-schools" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released</a> a survey in October 2022 that asked recent high school graduates, aged 18 to 20, whether they had been actively taught six concepts integral to CRT. Out of 1,505 respondents from across the country, 36% <a href="https://www.city-journal.org/article/yes-critical-race-theory-is-being-taught-in-schools" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> they had been taught in class that &#8220;America is a systemically racist country,&#8221; 41% said they had been taught that &#8220;In America, white people have white privilege,&#8221; and 30% said that they had been taught that &#8220;America is a patriarchal society.&#8221;
Several states, including Georgia and Florida, have already taken action to ban CRT in classrooms, but some <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/project-veritas-appears-to-catch-activist-boasting-about-selling-illegal-crt-curriculum-to-indoctrinate-kids-mocking-gov-kemp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">activists</a> have already found ways of circumventing state regulations.
It should be noted that the sample questions provided in the NAEP report don&#8217;t appear to be concerned with race and gender beyond the facts. A question rated as basic by the NAEP asked why Americans supported the 18th Amendment (Prohibition), and a question rated proficient asked what European explorers were looking for when they sailed the coasts and rivers of North America in the 17th century (a water route to Asia). None of the answer choices for either question specifically mentioned race or race relations.
The sample question rated advanced did touch on race relations in the U.S. — it asked students to identify two ideas from the Constitution and/or the Declaration of Independence that Martin Luther King Jr. may have been referring to in a specific part of his &#8220;I Have A Dream&#8221; speech from 1963. Unlike the previous questions, it was not multiple choice, and students would be required to write their own answers in short sentences. According to NAEP, only 6% of students who took the test gave a complete answer to the question.
With reportedly thousands of teachers more interested in peddling thoroughly debunked pseudo-history to young students rather than teaching the facts, it may not be a surprise that their knowledge of American history is lacking. With more and more instruction time going toward pushing an ideological agenda, there is necessarily less time to cover the facts tested on the NAEP&#8217;s exam. If the CRT push continues, a whole generation of future citizens could finish their education with an incomplete, and oftentimes warped, view of their own nation&#8217;s history.

New York Times journalist Nikole Hannah Jones tried to outgrievance a self-proclaimed survivor of the Chinese cultural revolution during a debate about &#8220;American exceptionalism&#8221; on Sunday.
Jones, the lead writer of the controversial revisionist education titled &#8220;1619 Project,&#8221; burst onto the political scene in 2019 with the 1619 project. However, her work has been widely criticized, and on Sunday, Jones took heat from debate opponent Xi Van Fleet after Jones claimed the &#8220;very presence&#8221; of black people is the &#8220;greatest rebuke&#8221; to American exceptionalism.
&#8220;Yourself and I, an immigrant from China with 200 borrowed dollars in my pocket when I arrived more than 30 yrs ago, are the proof of American Exceptionalism,&#8221; Van Fleet responded.
Van Fleet went viral two years ago after delivering an impassioned speech to a Virginia school board claiming CRT is rooted in cultural Marxism and warned Americans the communist subversion happening in the United States classroom mirrors the Chinese Cultural Revolution, which divided China&#8217;s population by class instead of race.
&#8220;Natural rights is unique to American founding,&#8221; Van Fleet said in response to Jones asking for specifics. &#8220;Bc of it we were able to abolish slavery, Jim Crow, anti-Chinese laws … to allow individuals to succeed. What is not unique to America is slavery, which still exists today. Ppl fighting for human rights in China are jailed by CCP.&#8221;
Jones did not deny natural rights &#8220;may have been unique&#8221; but argued one-fifth of the population was enslaved and without such rights during America&#8217;s foundation.
&#8220;Further, you do not think protesters in the US face state violence and arrest? You think the US has no political prisoners?&#8221; Jones asked, adding, &#8220;I&#8217;m afraid your vision of America does not match the reality.&#8221;
Van Fleet denounced the idea that her view of America is &#8220;not a vision.&#8221;
&#8220;Mine is &#8216;lived experience&#8217; under the enslavement of Communism, freedom in America, and the current Woke Revolution aiming to undo America,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Black Americans are enslaved no more thanks to the persevering principles and humanity of this country.&#8221;

In her own experience, Van Fleet has said living in America is the &#8220;biggest privilege&#8221; after emigrating to the United States in 1986 when she fled Mao&#8217;s Cultural Revolution, which he launched in 1966 until his death in 1976. Reports of the total number who reportedly died during the revolution claim up to 80 millions lives were taken during Mao&#8217;s rule.

Historians across the political spectrum have criticized the “1619 Project,” claiming it contains serious factual errors, including the premise that “one of the primary reasons the colonists decided to declare their independence from Britain was because they wanted to protect the institution of slavery.”

Indiana taxpayers shelled out more than $100,000 to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/1619-project-creator-raked-in-1m-last-year-for-college-speeches-on-inequality/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1619 Project</a> author <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/1619-project-writer-demanded-40k-for-45-minute-speech-busting-librarys-budget/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nikole Hannah-Jones</a> for just over 24 hours of work, according to a contract obtained by The Daily Wire under public records laws.
The deal between the Trustees of Indiana University and Hannah-Jones&#8217; speakers bureau said the university would pay $101,700 for a &#8220;2022 Themester Lecture on Identity and Identification.&#8221; The &#8220;Themester&#8221; reference meant that for an entire semester, Indiana students were told to focus on the &#8220;theme&#8221; of identity.
&#8220;During the fall of 2022, we invite members of the College and campus community to reflect on identity and all that it entails,&#8221; the university&#8217;s <a href="https://themester.indiana.edu/policies-and-planning/themester-2022/index.html">website</a> says. &#8220;Race, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, nationality, native language, socio-economic status, and myriad other identities shape our worldview: how we see, how we portray ourselves, and how we are perceived (and received).&#8221;
The &#8220;themester&#8221; is run by an advisory committee that includes a gender studies professor and undergraduates &#8220;majoring in Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance&#8221; and &#8220;Anthropology and Folklore and Ethnomusicology.&#8221;
Indiana is a deep-red state. Its governor, Eric Holcomb, is a Republican, and its state legislature is overwhelmingly Republican. The university did not return a Daily Wire request for comment on whether the six-figure sum was a wise expenditure of taxpayer money or whether it reflects the desires of Indiana&#8217;s electorate.

The lavish paycheck was in return for Hannah-Jones arriving on the afternoon on October 19 and participating in two classroom discussions followed by a &#8220;dinner-party with invited students and Union Board directors involving some discussion, but no prepared remarks from Speaker.&#8221; The next day, she was to participate in two more classroom sessions, followed by a &#8220;30-min public lecture, and 30 minutes of moderated discussion/q&amp;a with the audience. A meet/greet and booksigning will conclude the program.&#8221;
The $101,700 is the largest known sum of taxpayer money paid for a single engagement to the woman who has parlayed her assertions that America is &#8220;one of the most unequal societies in the history of the world&#8221; into a lucrative enterprise. Hannah-Jones was raised in Iowa, the daughter of a mixed-race couple.
The Daily Wire previously obtained records for 11 speeches she made in 2022, averaging $40,000 even though some were made online. She made at least 33 speeches last year, which at that average figure would work out to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/1619-project-creator-raked-in-1m-last-year-for-college-speeches-on-inequality" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$1.2 million</a> in 2022 speaking fees.
Most of the speeches were at universities, despite <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/historians-shred-nyt-1619-project-claiming-slavery-defines-america" target="_blank" rel="noopener">historians</a> from across the political spectrum pointing to significant errors in her writing, down to the foundational assertion that America&#8217;s colonists fought for independence from Britain in order to preserve slavery.
The speeches also serve to promote her book, which earned an estimated $2 million in royalties.
Among her other income sources, Hannah-Jones received nearly $75,000 not to work at the University of North Carolina last year as part of a legal settlement. In 2020, Hannah-Jones inked a deal with Oprah Winfrey and Lionsgate to develop 1619 “into an expansive portfolio of feature films, television series and other content,” including a Hulu series that will premier this month.
Despite her heavy speech schedule, the New York Times Magazine writer is employed by Howard University following the Knight Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation and other philanthropists earmarking $25 million.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/what-evidence-do-you-have-chris-wallace-throws-down-with-nikole-hannah-jones-on-cnn/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nikole Hannah-Jones</a>, the creator of the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/1619-project-writer-demanded-40k-for-45-minute-speech-busting-librarys-budget/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1619 Project</a>, raked in big bucks from dozens of colleges last year giving speeches condemning America and shaming her audiences for belonging to “one of the most unequal societies in the history of the world,” according to pay records examined by <a href="https://www.dailywire.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Wire</a>.
Some 33 speeches Hannah-Jones made in 2022 netted her an estimated payday of more than $1.2 million, according to a Daily Wire analysis. Twenty-seven of those speeches were made at colleges, including 14 at public schools, for an estimated $1 million. The Daily Wire&#8217;s estimate is based on records from 11 schools which responded to Freedom of Information requests and showed payments averaging $40,000 each.
The $1.2 million figure likely significantly understates the total since the list of speeches is incomplete and private institutions may have paid Hanah-Jones even more than the typical $40,000 fee forked over by public schools.
For some, she collected tens of thousands of dollars without having to leave the house. For example, the Cleveland Public Library paid her $20,000 for a Zoom lecture on November 19. Others included perks like first-class airfare.
The $1.2 million in speaking fees could pay for a year of tuition for 175 students at <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/community-college-pays-the-cost-of-20-students-tuition-for-celeb-diversity-lectures" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Grand Rapids Community College</a>, where Hannah-Jones spoke in January for $25,000, paid through a combination of school and private funds. In 2021, a parents group faulted the Oregon Department of Education for using funds intended to <a href="https://thefederalist.com/2021/06/10/oregon-yanks-money-from-struggling-students-program-to-pay-nikole-hannah-jones-for-lectures-on-race/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">benefit the neediest</a> to pay Hannah-Jones $50,000, amounting to $14,000 an hour.
The 1619 Project was a 2019 series in the New York Times Magazine that posited that anti-black racism has shaped every facet of American society. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/historians-shred-nyt-1619-project-claiming-slavery-defines-america" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Historians</a> across the political spectrum have said it contains serious factual errors, including the premise that &#8220;one of the primary reasons the colonists decided to declare their independence from Britain was because they wanted to protect the institution of slavery.&#8221;
Hannah-Jones is half-white and half-black and was raised in Iowa. She has become wealthy by writing about the oppression of blacks in America, with speeches just one of many concurrent sources of revenue.
In July Hannah-Jones received $75,000 not to work at the University of North Carolina as part of a legal settlement. UNC offered her a job as a professor, but the board of trustees delayed granting her tenure before eventually agreeing to it. Hannah-Jones claimed racism and threatened to sue, and turned down the job after tenure was offered.
On top of the hefty speaking fees, many of the speeches serve as an opportunity to sell books. According to BookScan figures, <a href="https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-1619-project-nikole-hannah-jones/1139222389?ean=9780593230572" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1619 Project: An Origin Story</a> has sold 456,000 copies, which under industry standards could work out to $2 million in royalties. (It’s unknown how much of the royalties go to Hannah-Jones versus the New York Times.)
In September, Hannah-Jones gave a talk as part of an Arlington, Virginia, library program&#8211;where her books were also sold&#8211;whose $40,000 price tag caused <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/1619-project-writer-demanded-40k-for-45-minute-speech-busting-librarys-budget" target="_blank" rel="noopener">budget problems</a> for a library group.
In 2020, Hannah-Jones inked a deal with Oprah Winfrey and Lionsgate to develop 1619 &#8220;into an expansive portfolio of feature films, television series and other content,&#8221; including a <a href="https://www.nytco.com/press/1619-hulu-january/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hulu series</a> that will premier this month.
Hannah-Jones &#8220;will serve as the creative leader and producer in developing feature films, television series, documentaries, unscripted programming and other forms of entertainment enlisting world-class Black creative voices to help adapt her celebrated series chronicling the ways that the original sin of slavery in America still permeates all aspects of our society today,&#8221; a press release <a href="https://www.nytco.com/press/global-media-leader-entrepreneur-oprah-winfrey-and-lionsgate-join-forces-with-pulitzer-prize-winning-journalist-nikole-hannah-jones-and-the-new-york-times-to-adapt-the-acclaimed-1619-project-into-a/">said</a>.
The MacArthur Foundation has also showered her with cash for years, giving her a <a href="https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/237093598/201813199349100836/IRS990PF" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$625,000</a> &#8220;genius grant&#8221; that was paid in the form of $125,000 per year from 2017 to 2021, according to nonprofit filings.
In 2021, the Knight Foundation donated <a href="https://communications.howard.edu/about-us" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$5 million</a> to Howard University to create a job for her there, the Knight Chair in Race and Journalism. Other donors shelled out <a href="https://thedig.howard.edu/all-stories/two-iconic-american-writers-join-howard-create-center-help-educate-next-generation-black-journalists" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$20 million</a>&#8211;including $5 million from MacArthur&#8211;to Howard University to bring Hannah-Jones on as its &#8220;Knight Chair in Race and Journalism,&#8221; alongside Ta-Nehisi Coates. That tasked Hannah-Jones with creating the Center for Journalism &amp; Democracy at Howard University, a “first-of-its-kind academic center committed to strengthening historically-informed, pro-democracy journalism.” The Center held its <a href="https://cfjd.howard.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">first event</a>, a &#8220;Democracy Summit,&#8221; on Nov. 15.
It’s unclear how Hannah-Jones manages to serve Howard while juggling so many other projects. Hannah-Jones still <a href="https://nikolehannahjones.com/about/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">refers</a> to herself as a New York Times Magazine writer, but her <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/by/nikole-hannah-jones" target="_blank" rel="noopener">byline page</a> at the Times has shown little activity in recent years. She did not return a request for comment.
On her personal <a href="https://nikolehannahjones.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">web page</a>, the banner quote blares: &#8220;I see my work as forcing us to confront our hypocrisy.&#8221;

A California school district voted this week to ban <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/critical-race-theory" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Critical Race Theory</a> from being taught in its schools.
In a 3-2 vote, the Temecula Valley Unified School District in southern <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/california" target="_blank" rel="noopener">California</a> voted to ban schools from teaching CRT. The vote came at the end of a marathon session on Tuesday night that ran into the wee hours of Wednesday morning; a new conservative majority had just been sworn in at the beginning of the meeting.
&#8220;The TVUSD desires to uplift and unite students by not imposing the responsibility of historical transgressions in the past and instead will engage students of all cultures in age-appropriate critical thinking that helps students navigate the past, present, and future,&#8221; the resolution banning CRT stated.
The school board&#8217;s <a href="https://www.scribd.com/document/614039805/Critical-Race-Theory-Resolution#download" target="_blank" rel="noopener">resolution</a> makes clear that teachers are not required to violate state, local, or federal law, and maintains that they adhere to the curriculum adopted by the board as the primary source for the context of instruction. The resolution also states that the board respects diversity.
&#8220;[R]acism has no place in American society and especially not in the Temecula Valley Unified School District,&#8221; the resolution stated. &#8220;[T]he TVUSD condemns racism and will not tolerate racism and racist conduct.&#8221; The <a href="https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2022/12/14/critical-race-theory-debated-by-temecula-school-board/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">East Bay Times</a> reported that the board passed another resolution condemning racism.
The resolution continued, explicitly condemning Critical Race Theory as &#8220;an ideology based on false assumptions about the United States of America and its population,&#8221; the foundation of which was based on an &#8220;artificial distortion of the traditional definition of &#8216;racism.'&#8221;
The board also explicitly condemned CRT as a racist ideology in itself, which assigns generational and racial guilt for conduct far in the past; violates the principle of equal protection under the law; and detracts from the underlying causes of real societal problems by framing all social issues as racial issues. &#8220;Critical Race Theory or other similar frameworks will not be used as a source to guide how topics related to race will be taught,&#8221; the board said.
The resolution then banned all of the following core tenets of Critical Race Theory from being taught:
<ol>
<li>&#8220;Racism is racial prejudice plus power, a concept that is often used to argue that (i) only individuals classified as &#8220;white&#8221; people can be racist because only &#8220;white&#8221; people control society and (ii) individuals in ethnic minorities cannot be racist because they do not control society.</li>
<li>Racism is ordinary and the usual way society operates</li>
<li>&#8220;Interest convergence&#8221; or &#8220;material determinism&#8221;; the idea that moving away from racist policies is motivated primarily by the oppressor class&#8217;s own self-interest.</li>
<li>&#8220;Differential racialization,&#8221; the idea that society racializes different minorities according to the needs of the labor market.</li>
<li>The &#8220;voice-of-color&#8221; thesis, the belief that minority groups are inherently better equipped to speak about race and racism.</li>
</ol>
The resolution also banned many core teachings that have their origins in CRT. Specifically, that because of their race or sex, an individual:
<ul>
<li>inherently racist or sexist, consciously or unconsciously;</li>
<li>a member of either and oppressor or an oppressed class;</li>
<li>inherently morally superior or inferior to another race;</li>
<li>should be discriminated against or receive favorable treatment on the basis of race or sex;</li>
<li>bears responsibility for past actions committed by other members of the same group;</li>
<li>should feel guilty or discomforted on the basis of race or sex</li>
</ul>
Furthermore, the resolution banned the idea that meritocracy, hard work, or the scientific method are inherently racist or sexist or were created by members of one race to oppress another. It also banned the core principle of the &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/1619-project" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1619 Project</a>,&#8221; that the advent of slavery in the American colonies was the real founding of the United States, and that the Revolution and American independence from Britain was partly an effort to preserve slavery.
The resolution does allow for some teaching of CRT, but only as a small role and in ways that focus on its faults.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/1619-project" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The 1619 Project</a> writer who has made an opulent living highlighting racial inequality in schools was paid $40,000 to give a speech at a high school just minutes away from the campus of her new employer, according to materials obtained by <a href="https://www.dailywire.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Wire</a>.
Former New York Times writer Nikole Hannah-Jones was paid the sum to give a 45-minute talk Sept. 20 as part of a three-hour event at Washington-Liberty High School in Arlington, Virginia. That&#8217;s only eight miles from Howard University, where she became a tenured professor with the help of <a href="https://www.macfound.org/press/press-releases/two-iconic-american-writers-join-howard-university-to-create-a-center-to-educate-the-next-generation-of-black-journalists">$20 million</a> in donations from the MacArthur, Knight, and Ford foundations. Including travel time, that fee amounts to approximately $10,000 an hour.
The speech was also an opportunity for Hannah-Jones to sell her book, even as the event implied that it was &#8220;banned.&#8221;
While held at a public high school, the talk was a program of the Arlington Public Library, and the cost was so enormous that it spurred tension between the library and the Friends of Arlington Library, a nonprofit that raises money to fund <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/american-library-association-transgender-gender-queer-comics-schools" target="_blank" rel="noopener">library</a> activities including author events.
On August 9, Peter Petruski, a library division chief, wrote that the speakers fund was $7,500 over budget even though &#8220;The Friends offered $130,000 for Arlington Reads in FY23, which was less than the library said would be needed.&#8221;
On August 11, Diane Kresh, another <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/texas-library-association-conference-features-a-drag-queen-and-ibram-kendi" target="_blank" rel="noopener">library</a> official, called the apparent &#8220;Arlington READS encumbrances troubling&#8230; The bottom line is there is a difference of $7,500 over and above the &#8216;approved&#8217; budget, money which is due now to meet Fall contractual obligations. I am certain all of you can appreciate we cannot jeopardize either the County or the Library&#8217;s financial standing if bills are not paid.&#8221;
Claire Christian, the president of the Friends group, wrote two days later: &#8220;Not necessarily thrilled about the overage.&#8221; On August 19, the second installment of $20,000 was wired to Hannah-Jones&#8217; agent.
Internal correspondence also shows officials&#8217; response to criticism from community members. A local news outlet &#8220;has posted an article about the upcoming event with Nikole Hannah-Jones and it&#8217;s getting a lot of very ignorant and negative comments,&#8221; Christian wrote. Criticism of Hannah-Jones is primarily because she is not a historian and leading <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/historians-shred-nyt-1619-project-claiming-slavery-defines-america" target="_blank" rel="noopener">historians have rejected</a> her factual premise that the U.S. was founded to preserve slavery.
The contract with Hannah-Jones barred any recording of the event, with a charge of $100,000 if breached.
Charles Yao, who represents Hannah-Jones for the Lavin agency, did not return a request for comment from The Daily Wire.
Hannah-Jones was raised by a white mother and black father in Iowa. The speaking fee has raised eyebrows because Hannah-Jones&#8217; work has been based on the argument that blacks are oppressed, as demonstrated in part by wealth inequality, even as she has effortlessly been showered with wealth and accolades from elite institutions.
Michael Chamberlain, director of the government watchdog group Protect the Public&#8217;s Trust, told The Daily Wire the fee Hannah-Jones pocketed I unusually high for a local library to pay.
“The $40,000 they paid to one particular speaker, which put the program over budget, is an eye-popping amount for a local library to spend on such a controversial figure,&#8221; Chamberlain said. &#8220;Only Arlington residents can determine the wisdom of this decision, but transparency is a necessary first step for them to make that determination.”

Holding historical figures up to modern-day woke values is silly scholarship, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/bill-maher" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bill Maher</a> declared Friday in his latest ‘Real Time’ lecture to leftists.
The old-school liberal made the point about so-called “presentisim” in the “New Rules” segment of his HBO show while discussing a controversial <a href="https://www.historians.org/publications-and-directories/perspectives-on-history/september-2022/is-history-history-identity-politics-and-teleologies-of-the-present" target="_blank" rel="noopener">essay</a> by American Historical Society President James Sweet. The historian, who later apologized for writing that judging historical figures by contemporary standards “ignores the values and mores of people in their own times,” shouldn’t be sorry, Maher said.
“Being woke is like a magic moral time machine in which you judge everyone by what you think you would have done in 1066, and you always win,” Maher said, adding that presentism is “just a way to congratulate yourself about being better than George Washington because you have a gay friend and he didn’t.”
“But if he were alive today, he would too, and if you were alive then, you wouldn’t,” Maher added.
Brooks’ essay called out <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/1619-project" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The 1619 Project</a> and The Woman King as examples of historical presentism, which enraged many on the Left. The 1619 Project, by former New York Times writer Nikole Hannah-Jones, claimed that America’s true founding took place when slavery began on the continent, not with the Declaration of Independence. Several historians have disputed Hannah-Jones’ theory, and the author herself had to <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/seven-months-later-1619-project-leader-admits-she-got-it-wrong" target="_blank" rel="noopener">walk back her central claim</a> that colonists revolted against England in order to preserve slavery.
Hannah-Jones, who won a Pulitzer prize for the 1619 Project, is now a professor at Howard University. Earlier this year, <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/1619-project-author-nikole-hannah-jones-says-tipping-rooted-in-racism" target="_blank" rel="noopener">she claimed</a> the practice of tipping waiters and waitresses was linked to slavery.
Maher said slavery was not simply a racist institution, noting “the capacity for cruelty is a human thing, not a white thing.”
“Everybody who could afford one, had a slave – including people of color,” Maher said. “The way people talk about slavery these days, you’d think it was a uniquely American thing that we invented in 1619. But slavery throughout history has been the rule, not the exception.”
Presentism, Maher said, puts “race, gay, gender, and colonizers” into a wokeness blender as if “the New World was a great big diverse dance club, and the pilgrims were the bridge and tunnel crowd who came in and ruined everything.”
