Weekend Media Wrap, Vol. 20: What You Missed If You Weren’t Glued To The Sunday Shows

DailyWire.com

Every Sunday morning, legacy media outlets are taken over by elected officials, aspiring elected officials, administration insiders, and the usual collection of talking heads — all of whom are there to discuss specific policies, push talking points, or simply promote their own campaigns.

For those who don’t spend their Sunday mornings glued to the television — and their Sunday afternoons attempting to unravel a full week’s worth of network and cable news media spin — The Daily Wire has compiled a short summary of what you may have missed.

ABC News, “This Week”:

John Kirby, the Strategic Communications Coordinator for the White House’s National Security Council, told “This Week” host George Stephanopoulos why, after several days and several hostage exchanges, negotiations between Israel and the terror group Hamas broke down late last week.

“Neither side is willing to come back to the table,” Kirby said, adding, “It fell apart because Hamas was unwilling and refused to come up with additional lists of women and children, which we know they are holding.”

Kirby also said that the latest intelligence suggests there are possibly eight additional Americans still among the hostages being held by Hamas in Gaza.

CBS News, “Face the Nation”:

Former FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb spoke with CBS anchor Margaret Brennan about reports of an unknown pneumonia spreading in China — and subsequent calls primarily from Republican lawmakers for a travel ban for people coming to the United States from China until more information is known.

“There’s no reason to believe that something novel is spreading there,” Gottlieb said, suggesting that fears of another global pandemic were not likely to manifest. But he did say that it was understandable that people had worried at first, “because China just wasn’t being forthcoming.”

CNN, “State of the Union”:

Senator Lindsey Graham spoke with CNN anchor Dana Bash about the ongoing war between Israel and the terror group Hamas, responding to calls from the left — and even the White House — for Israel to dial back its attacks to avoid collateral damage.

“Well, tell us how to do it differently,” Graham said. “Yes, what is too many people dying in World War II after Pearl Harbor? Did the American public worry about how many people were dying to destroy Tokyo and Berlin?”

“I know this is not the same, but it’s similar. I mean, after October the 7th, Israel is at total war with Hamas. What they did, you won’t even show on television, probably because you can’t,” he continued. “So, the bottom line here is, no Republican believes this, by the way. No Republican is telling Israel to change your military tactics, because I don’t know how to change them.”

Bash also spoke with Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) about the war, asking specifically about Hamas’ use of sexual violence and rape as a weapon against Israeli women and the relative silence from progressive women who claim to be defenders of women’s rights.

“I don’t know that that’s true. I think we always talk about the impact of war on women in particular,” Jayapal replied, adding that “of course” she had condemned Hamas’ use of rape as a weapon of war.

Then she pivoted, suggesting that Israel was guilty of war crimes — but Bash interrupted her: “With respect, I was just asking about the women, and you turned it back to Israel. I’m asking you about Hamas.”

Jayapal once again said that she did condemn Hamas, but cited the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry’s alleged death toll as she argued, “I think we have to be balanced about bringing in the outrages against Palestinians.”

NBC News, “Meet the Press”:

The White House’s Strategic Communications Director John Kirby called out Hamas terrorists during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” telling host Kristen Welker that despite promising to allow the Red Cross to have access to the remaining hostages, Hamas has not yet made good on that promise.

Hamas agreed that the Red Cross would be able to have access to the hostages — who are still being held in Gaza and have been there since the terror group’s October 7th attack on Israel — while Israel and Hamas had reached a temporary pause in fighting and some of the hostages were being released, but Kirby said that access had never been granted.

“Hamas agreed to allow the Red Cross access to these hostages while the pause was in place, and of course, that didn’t happen and is still not happening,” Kirby said, calling that lack of access “unacceptable.”

FOX, “Fox News Sunday”:

Kirby also joined “Fox News Sunday” anchor Shannon Bream to discuss the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas terrorists — and what the Biden administration was doing to facilitate another truce between the two parties in an effort to convince Hamas to release more of the hostages they are still holding in Gaza.

Kirby echoed Vice President Kamala Harris’ claim — which she made on Saturday during a trip to Dubai to speak with several Arab leaders — that the United States should work to “revitalize the Palestinian Authority” in the hopes that the PA could eventually handle security in Gaza. Kirby added one caveat, however, acknowledging that the PA needed to be reformed as much as it needed to be “revitalized” if the group were ever to be trusted to take on a leadership role in Gaza.

As a number of critics had pointed out following Harris’ remarks, the PA has paid out stipends to the families of suicide bombers who have killed Israelis and has refused to recognize Israel as legitimate state — among other issues that would likely complicate having a revitalized PA in charge of Gaza.

MSNBC, “Inside With Jen Psaki”:

Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki claimed during her MSNBC Show, “Inside with Jen Psaki,” that former President Donald Trump was just itching to silence and even jail his political opponents, using Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin as his examples.

“Putin and Xi are models for Trump. Leaders who jail and silence journalists. Leaders who do not tolerate free speech. That’s what Trump is threatening. If you don’t think he is dying to silence his critics in the media… Think again,” she said.

Psaki’s comments come even as multiple attempts — by Democrat prosecutors and district attorneys — to prosecute and jail Trump are still in progress, and at least one judge has issued a gag order against him.
