Thursday, Donald Trump’s “thank you” tour took him to Hershey, Pennsylvania. During his nearly hour-long speech, he mentioned a conversation he had with President Obama, and the crowd began to boo.
In an apparent effort to offset the jeers, he decided to take a jab at White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest:
“This foolish guy, Josh Earnest, I don’t know if he is talking to President Obama. You know, having the right press secretary is so important, because he is so bad, the way he delivers a message. He can deliver a positive message and it sounds bad. He could say, ‘Ladies and gentleman, today we have totally defeated ISIS,’ and it wouldn’t sound good. Okay? Alright? I have a feeling they won’t be saying it, but I know we will be saying it.”
Wednesday, Earnest launched his latest salvo against Trump, saying:
“There’s ample evidence that was known long before the election–in most cases, long before October–about the Trump campaign and Russia. Everything from the Republican nominee himself calling on Russia to hack his opponent. It might be an indication that he was obviously aware, and concluded, based on whatever facts or sources he had available to him, that Russia was involved, and their involvement was having a negative impact on his opponent’s campaign–that’s why he was encouraging them to keep doing it.”
This tit for tat is a perfect illustration of Donald Trump’s seeming inability to hear criticism and let it go. He’s like a cat chasing a laser, and his acolytes eat it up. Unfortunately, Trump’s need to engage in petty, retaliatory attacks is one of his greatest weaknesses, and his opponents know it.
Over the next four years, the Left will move the laser dot anywhere they want, and Donald Trump–much like a cat that cannot comprehend the fact that it’s being manipulated–will follow.
Because his weaknesses are so well-known, it’s critical that conservatives do what they can to keep Trump on track. If we fail to do so, there’s no telling where the laser will take him.
