Twice-failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton called President Donald Trump an “illegitimate president” on Wednesday, adding that the Commander-in-Chief is “very insecure about it.”
Mrs. Clinton made the remarks on the daytime talk show “The View,” after co-host Joy Behar brought up the president’s “mental state.”
Daughter Chelsea Clinton, who was also at the roundtable, chimed in and said Trump is “obsessed” with her mother.
“He’s obsessed with her,” Chelsea said. Behar, of course, concurred. “He’s obsessed with you!” the co-host offered. “Also, they’re chanting ‘lock her up.’ I mean, he has every criminal working for him and they’re worried about locking you up. What do you make of that?”
“First, I do think that he knows that he’s an illegitimate president,” Hillary responded, sparking loud cheers from the studio audience. “And because of that he’s very insecure about it.”
“Look what he’s trying to do now,” the former secretary of state continued, according to The Daily Beast. “Part of the Ukraine scandal that is slowly coming to light is he’s trying to figure out how to say, no, no, it wasn’t the Russians even though our intelligence community and everyone who has looked at this said yeah, it was the Russians. He’s trying to say no, somehow it was Obama, Hillary, whoever. So he’s obsessed with the fact that he was helped a lot in unprecedented ways.”
Hillary added that Trump “is someone who has to dominate and be, you know, the only voice in the room and the biggest guy on the block, the master of the universe, and he can’t stand any kind of questioning or any kind of dialogue.”
The former First Lady made similar comments about Trump’s status as president over the weekend. “I believe [Trump] knows he’s an illegitimate president,” Hillary said on “CBS This Morning,” according to Real Clear Politics.
Hillary went on to claim that there “were a bunch of different reasons why the election turned out the way it did,” noting that she takes “full responsibility for those parts of it that I should.” However, she quickly muddied the waters as to how much “responsibility” she really takes, again suggesting Trump stole the election from her: “I don’t know that we’ll ever know everything that happened. But clearly, we know a lot, and are learning more every day,” she said.
Of course, it was Mrs. Clinton who was absolutely rattled and deeply concerned for our democracy when Trump suggested in October 2016 that he would have to “look at” everything before conceding the presidential election if he were to lose.
“That’s horrifying,” Hillary said of Trump’s remarks, according to The New York Times. “Let’s be clear about what he is saying and what that means. He is denigrating — he is talking down our democracy. And I am appalled that someone who is the nominee of one of our two major parties would take that position.”
Hillary added that it was “really troubling. That is not the way our democracy works.”
